A Mes s age fro m the President Greetings Alumni, When you receive this newsletter, Morgan will be abuzz with preparations for the 137th Annual Commencement and our 73rd Annual Alumni Awards and Class Reunion Luncheon, a time we all look forward to with great pride. Morgan experienced some tremendous highs and some major challenges this academic year, which made us come together to ensure Morgan continues on its path to greatness. I met many of you for the first time through e-mail, via the telephone or at meetings where we bonded in support of our alma mater. Your expertise in myriad areas is astounding, and your commitment to Morgan is unwavering. You demonstrated that Morgan alumni are indeed everywhere leading the world. We must continue to meet the challenges of the future head-on and achieve new heights. First, let me join President David Wilson and the administration in congratulating you on the fact that the alumni giving rate is up, once again. The giving rate in 2012 was 13.87 percent, which is double the rate of 2010 and 3 percent higher than in 2011. To keep deserving students in school, Morgan needs our financial commitment. Morgan needs its alumni to continue to be ambassadors for the University, attracting and recruiting the best and the brightest students to campus. We all must actively engage in this effort. Many of you have made and are making outstanding contributions in your chosen fields and in your communities. Who better than alumni to reach out to potential students and let them see how Fair Morgan has prepared you to be competitive and successful in today’s world. Our campus continues to expand. This past fall, we broke ground on the new Earl G. Graves School of Business and Management on the new West Campus. The school, which is the first expansion project in the Northwood Shopping Center, is scheduled to open in 2014. We also have taken measures to enhance campus security, including hiring additional security officers and a proposal to build security kiosks at key locations on campus. There is much to do to continue to advance our Fair Morgan. President Wilson’s 10-year Strategic Plan and the steps taken, thus far, are moving Morgan in the right direction. With your continued support, we can achieve and exceed these goals. Stay in touch, and stay involved. I look forward to seeing you on campus this spring on Alumni Day and at Commencement 2013. ALUMNUS OF THE YEAR Kweisi Mfume, ’76
weisi Mfume was born and raised in Baltimore City and graduated magna cum laude from Morgan in 1976 with a Bachelor of Science degree in political science. He later earned a master’s degree in liberal arts from The Johns Hopkins University, with a concentration in international studies. As he followed his dreams of making a positive impact on society and shaping a more humane public policy, Mfume became increasingly involved in the community, as an activist, radio commentator, administrator and TV personality. By the age of 31, he had won his first election to the Baltimore City Council. Seven years later, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and served Maryland’s 7th District for the next decade. In Congress, he was a member of a broad array of committees and held several leadership positions, including chair of the Joint Economic Committee of the House and Senate and chair of the Congressional Black Caucus. Moreover,
he was a consistently strong advocate for landmark business and civil rights legislation. Mfume left his Congressional seat to become President and Chief Executive Officer of the NAACP in February 1996 and served there for nine years. During that time, he significantly raised the national profile of the NAACP, while helping to restore its prominence among the nation’s civil rights organizations. He recently served an interim appointment as the Executive Director of the National Medical Association and now sits on the National Advisory Council on Minority Health and Health Disparities at the National Institutes of Health. A member of the MSU Board of Regents, Mfume has long demonstrated his commitment to Morgan and love of alma mater. For his outstanding achievements that have brought credit to the University over four decades, the MSU National Alumni Association is proud to name him its Alumnus of the Year for 2013.

Outstanding in its service to Morgan and the broader community since its founding in 1987, the Howard County Alumni Chapter is this year’s MSU National Alumni Association Chapter of the Year. Through its annual Spring and Fall scholarship fundraisers, the Howard County chapter raises thousands of dollars, which enables it to provide scholarships and book awards to Howard County high school and/or community college graduates who attend Morgan. The chapter also gives scholarships to students at Morgan to assist them in continuing their education. In addition, the chapter pays its local membership dues for all scholarship recipients upon their graduation from Morgan. Individual chapter members have donated generously to Morgan President David Wilson’s Five Dollar Scholarship Fund, to the newly created Life Membership Challenge and to the MSU Foundation, and have provided vital support to the Modern Dance Ensemble, the football program and numerous academic departments.
Over the years, the chapter has arranged many tours of Morgan’s campus for Howard County middle school and high school students. The tours are made possible by the chapter’s partnership with the Howard County Public Schools and its Black Student Achievement Program. The chapter’s activities in Howard County keep Morgan in a positive light. They include, among others, a quarterly clean-up of Benson Road in Columbia as part of the county’s Adopt-a-Road program, and participation as an exhibitor in the Howard County Black History Fair. Life Membership in the MSU National Alumni Association is part of the culture of the Howard County Alumni Chapter. More than 50 percent of its members are Life Members. These are just a few of the activities, far too numerous to list here, that make the Howard County Alumni Chapter more than deserving of this award.
Honorary Alumnus
Maryland State Delegate Rudolph C. Cane
The MSU National Alumni Association is honored to name Maryland State Delegate Rudolph C. Cane (D-37A) as the recipient of this year’s Honorary Alumnus Award. Delegate Cane has made outstanding contributions to the Eastern Shore, the State of Maryland and the nation through his longtime commitment to community service and political activism. He has represented Dorchester and Wicomico Counties in the Maryland House of Delegates since 1999 and has been a strong advocate for Morgan and other Maryland HBCUs for many years in Annapolis. Recognizing the adverse effects of duplicate academic programs on these institutions, Delegate Cane
has been assiduous in his legislative efforts to ensure parity funding. Delegate Cane was born in Somerset, Md., and earned his Bachelor of Science degree at Coppin State College (now University). He is a military veteran, having served as a radar sergeant in the U.S. Army. His deceased wife, Louella F. Cane, graduated from Morgan with a master’s degree in mathematics and was a strong supporter of the University and the Eastern Shore of Maryland Alumni Chapter. The couple has two children, Dr. Renee A. Cane McCoy and Rudolph C. Cane, Jr., M.D., who is a 1982 graduate of Morgan.
Special Achievement Award Honoree Frederick W. Oliver, Ph.D., ’62
Frederick W. Oliver, Ph.D. is this year’s recipient of the MSU National Alumni Association Special Achievement Award. Dr. Oliver received his Bachelor of Science degree in physics from Morgan in 1962. He was awarded a Master of Science degree in nuclear physics in 1965 and a doctorate in physics in 1972, both from Howard University. Dr. Oliver joined the faculty at Morgan in 1969 as an Associate Professor and became Chair of the Physics Department in 1979. He served as Chair until 1995 and then again from 1999 to 2006. During his tenure as Chair, Morgan’s Physics Department consistently graduated the largest number of physics majors in Maryland. He groomed and mentored more than a generation of physics graduates and helped position Morgan to be among the top producers of African-American baccalaureate degree recipients in physics in the country. While at Morgan, Dr. Oliver held research appointments with the Naval Research Laboratory, Argonne National Laboratory, the University of Maryland, NASA, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Bell Laboratories and the Army Research Laboratory. As Principal Investigator on 24 grants, he brought more than $2 million to the University. He authored or coauthored
more than 70 scientific papers and abstracts, primarily in nuclear science applications, and has given scientific lectures at many conferences and universities throughout the country. After retiring from Morgan in 2006, he was appointed to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s Atomic Safety and Licensing Board Panel as a part-time Administrative Judge, a position he still holds. In 2010, he was selected to appear in The HistoryMakers for the field of science. Dr. Oliver is a Life Member of the MSU National Alumni Association and an active member of the Howard County Alumni Chapter. He is married to Dianne Polson Oliver, who is also a Morgan graduate, Class of 1976, and has two adult children.

Morgan’s Director of Alumni Relations traveled to the Bahamas in August to meet with some of the Bahamian alumni, in an effort to reactivate the Bahamas Alumni Chapter. The enthusiastic group of six was very excited about the chapter’s possible rebirth and identified quite a few other Morgan alumni who reside in the island nation. They are planning another meeting in March. The Morgan Men’s Basketball Team was also in the Bahamas during the Director’s trip and played three exhibition games, all of which they won. Some of the Bahamian alumni also attended the games.
Maysa Honored as MEAC Distinguished Alumnus
Recording artist Maysa — Maysa Leak, ’91 — was recognized as Morgan’s Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Distinguished Alumnus in March, during the MEAC Basketball Tournament in Norfolk, Va. Maysa is a veteran soul and Maysa smooth jazz vocalist whose ninth solo CD, “Motions of Love,” boasts cameos by the legendary Stevie Wonder and neo soul crooner Dwele. After graduating from Morgan with a B.A. in classical performance, she headed to Southern California to perform with Stevie Wonder’s female backup group, Wonderlove. While with Wonder, she was a vocalist on the soundtrack for the Spike Lee film “Jungle Fever” and performed on numerous television shows, including The Arsenio Hall Show, Oprah, and The Tonight Show.
Morgan Alumnus Receives Congressional Gold Medal
Morgan graduate Franklin Beaird, Class of 1950, was among 400 African-American men honored in Washington, D.C., last June, during a medal ceremony for the Montford Point Marines, the first African Americans allowed to serve in the U.S. Marine Corps. The former marines, many of whom served during World War II and are now in their 80s, received the Congressional Gold Medal, the nation’s highest civilian honor.

Classes ending in “3” and “8,” it’s time to celebrate your Morgan anniversary, at the 73rd Annual Alumni Awards and Class Reunion Luncheon! Join your friends and classmates, enjoy great food and fond memories, and experience the “new” MSU, with all of its campus expansions and improvements. The event will be on Friday, May 17 and will begin with a “Welcome Back” Reception at 11:00 a.m. in the lobby outside of the Calvin and Tina Tyler Ballroom, on the second floor of the University Student Center. The luncheon will be held in the ballroom beginning at 12:00 noon. Morgan President David Wilson will be on hand to meet and greet attendees and will address the luncheon with updates on the progress of the University. Special recognition will be given to the Class of 1963, which will be celebrating its 50th anniversary. The Classes of 1962 and earlier will be recognized as the Emeritus Class. The Alumni Participation Challenge
Lifetime members of the MSU National Alumni Association have pledged $100,000 over the next five years to help raise Morgan to an elite level of alumni loyalty. This multiyear effort will support scholarships for students and will match dollar-for-dollar all new alumni gifts up to a total of $100,000, until 2017. The stakes have never been higher. U.S.News & World Report looks at alumni giving as one of the key factors in rating and ranking universities. Moody’s and Standard & Poor’s consider alumni giving in gauging our financial strength. And, corporations and foundations want to know what the “family has done” when they are deciding to support Morgan. Parents and students are even making enrollment decisions based on the one tried and true indicator of customer satisfaction: alumni giving back to alma mater. Morgan ended 2012 with an alumni participation giving rate of 13.87 percent. This represents a 33 percent increase over last year and a 115 percent increase in alumni giving over the last three years. This is unprecedented growth and bucks the national trend in alumni giving. But each year, we start back at zero, and the alumni participation rate is counted all over again. Our goal is to reach an alumni giving rate of 17 percent by 2017. U.S. Virgin Islands Alumni Chapter
The U.S. Virgin Islands is becoming the place for Morgan alumni sightings. MSU alumni hold key positions in the local government and private industry. MSU Alum, Maysa (Maysa Leak, ’91) joined Najee and Alex Bugnon in an unforgettable evening under the stars this past Jan 26. From November 22–25, the MSU Men’s Basketball Team will participate in the 2013 U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam Basketball Tournament. Carol Callwood, ’89, is the local voice of Paradise Jam. MSU Foundation Presents Annual Golf Tournament in May Now celebrating its 24th successful year, the MSU Foundation’s Annual Invitational Golf Tournament is one of the oldest tournaments held at the prestigious Turf Valley in Ellicott City, Md. The tournament will be held on Friday, May 3, 2013. Check-in begins at 7:30 a.m., and the tournament starts at 9:00 a.m. A three-hour golf clinic starts at 9:30 a.m., and the Luncheon and Awards Ceremony starts at 2:30 p.m. The event features a Modified Florida Scramble, prizes for men and women, Super Ticket, a 50/50 raffle, a Million-Dollar Hole-In-One, Beat the Pro, perks for all contestants, and food and drinks after play. Proceeds from the tournament support the Morgan State University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. The registration fee is $150 per person, or $35 per person to attend the luncheon only. The Eastern Shore of Maryland Alumni Chapter has begun rotating its monthly meetings to other counties on the Eastern Shore. By taking the meeting to other counties, the chapter hopes to boost alumni participation on the local level and in the MSUNAA. The first rotation meeting was held in Dorchester County

NY Metro Chapter Gives Children a Merry Christmas
Seeking to help local children experience the simple joys of Christmas, despite the harsh economy and Superstorm Sandy, the MSU New York Metro Alumni Chapter held a Toy Drive/Game Night and Coat Drive last Dec. 15. Chapter members and guests played board games, and gifts were collected for children. They donated bags of toys and more than 100 coats to local shelters. In addition, there was a silent auction.

On Jan. 12, the Howard L. Cornish Metropolitan Baltimore Chapter celebrated its 28th Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Breakfast at Martin’s West. The MLK Breakfast was a culturally inspired educational success in awarding $17,500 in scholarships and 10 laptop computers to 28 Morgan students. President David Wilson of Morgan and Jacqueline Lawson, President of the MSUNAA brought greetings. Dr. Marco K. Merrick was the Master of Ceremonies. Joshua Parker, 2012 MD Teacher of the Year, was guest speaker for the event. Quincy Hairston, a student from St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic School, performed Dr. King’s speech, “What Is Your Life’s Blueprint?”
Class of 1970 Plans Trip to France and England
In observance of its 45th graduation anniversary, the Class of 1970 invites travelers on a 12-day trip to France and England in August 2015. It’s ‘50 Years Out’ for the Class of ’63
What can happen in 50 years? A new library can replace Soper, a college can become a university, and students who marched out in blue can return in gold. Join them at the 73rd Annual Alumni Awards and Class Reunion Luncheon, to be held at 12:00 noon on Friday, May 17 in the University Student Center. The culmination of their Golden Anniversary celebration will occur when class members, wearing gold robes, will lead the procession of the 137th Commencement on Saturday, May 18, 2013.
Newly Formed Charlotte Alumni Chapter Hosts the MSU Choir
On March 24, 2013, the Charlotte Alumni Chapter was thrilled to play host to the world renowned MSU Choir’s “The Morgan Singers.” The Charlotte concert was held at St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church. ROTC Chapter Serves Local Veterans Center
The ROTC Alumni Chapter has established a partnership with the Veterans Affairs Community Center, which is located near MSU’s campus. To kick off the partnership, the chapter participated in the Center’s holiday party. More than 100 veterans received personal gift kits donated by the ROTC Chapter. The partners are planning a summer cookout and year-round volunteer services by the ROTC chapter.
ALUMNI ON THE MOVE Ameer Ali, ’12, forward on Morgan’s Men’s Basketball Team from 2008 to 2012, has been re-signed by the Bay Area Shuckers of the American Professional Basketball League, a 16-member league with teams in the U.S. MidAtlantic and Northeast. Ali earned his Bachelor of Science degree in telecommunications from Morgan and was a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champion Bears teams in 2009 and 2010. Tyson J. Beale, Ph.D., ’10, has been appointed associate dean for the University College at Fayetteville State University. Dr. Beale previously worked in MSU’s Office of Student Retention and Leadership Development, and earned his doctorate in higher education from the University. He was Morgan’s 2007 male faculty/staff member of the year. At Fayetteville State, he will lead and supervise the Freshman Center and Learning Center teams. Toya Corbett, ’05, Morgan’s coordinator of student activities, has been named one of Maryland’s Top 50 Women Under 40 by the Maryland Daily Record, for 2012. Corbett received the honor for her civic service and professional achievements. As student activities coordinator, she counsels, mentors and prepares students for campus leadership positions and encourages scholastic achievement through educational and cultural programs. She is a master’s alumna of the University in African American studies and is pursuing her doctorate at Morgan. Clarence Crawley, ’60, and his wife, Lois, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last year with a weeklong vacation in Cuba. The couple joined a group of two dozen on the trip, which was hosted by the Newark Museum’s People to People exchange program. “It’s important for Cubans to know what we are like, and conversely it was important for us to know what Cubans are about,” Clarence told his hometown newspaper The Montclair Times. He earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Morgan and is a retired business planner for IBM Corporation, and an actor. Roger W. Davis, Ed.D., ’98, has been appointed dean of academic services at Rockland Community College of the State University of New York. Previously, he was vice president for Academic Affairs at Bauder College in Atlanta, Ga. In his current position, Dr. Davis is primarily responsible for academic administration. He brings to the job his long experience working with diverse populations, student relations and satisfaction, student assessment and student retention. He earned his doctorate in urban education leadership from Morgan. Lorenzo L. Esters, Ph.D., ’08, is the vice president of Student Success and Enrollment Management, a newly created position at Kentucky State University, where he will lead the university’s initiative to better support students who are low-income, first in their family to attend college and who require remedial courses. Dr. Esters came to Kentucky State after serving as vice president of the Office for Access and the Advancement of Public Black Universities at the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities. A first-generation college student, he earned his doctorate in urban education leadership at Morgan. The Credit Union Executives Society (CUES) has named Bert J. Hash, Jr., ’70, as the 2012 CUES Outstanding Chief Executive. Hash, who earned his Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from Morgan, has led the Municipal Employees Credit Union of Baltimore for more than 15 years. During his tenure, MECU’s membership has grown by 74 percent to more than 100,000, and its assets
have nearly tripled, to $1.2 billion. Hash received his latest honor from CUES during a ceremony at The Ritz-Carlton Palm Beach in Florida last November. He was inducted into the CUES Hall of Fame in 2008. Adriel A. Hilton, Ph.D., ’08, graduate of Morgan’s doctoral program in higher education, is the new director of the Center for African American Research and Policy in Madison, Wis. He is also assistant vice president for inclusion initiatives at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Mich. Dr. Hilton is one of three Morgan graduates who edited the recently published book “Black Graduate Education at Historically Black Colleges and Universities.” The others are Robert T. Palmer, Ph.D., ’07, of SUNY Binghamton and Tiffany P. Fountaine, ’08, assistant director of Morgan’s Center for Academic Success and Achievement. Morgan President David Wilson has named Burney J. Hollis, Ph.D., ’68, dean emeritus of Morgan’s College of Liberal Arts. Dr. Hollis, who earned his B.A. in English from Morgan, is the first dean in the history of the institution to be awarded this distinction. In conferring the title, Dr. Wilson cited Dr. Hollis’ “twenty-one-and-a-half years of outstanding service” and his “outstanding leadership of the largest academic unit at the institution.” Dr. Hollis ended his term December 2010 and returned as professor of English in the spring of 2012, after a one semester sabbatical. Dr. Hollis is a Fulbright Scholars and a Woodrow Wilson Fellow, among the many other honors and awards he has received over his stellar career. Angela McMillan Howell, Ph.D., ’00, assistant professor in Morgan’s Department of Sociology and Anthropology, has been appointed secretary/treasurer of the Association of Black Anthropologists. Dr. Howell earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Morgan in sociology and her Master of Arts and doctorate in anthropology from Brown University. Sharon D. Jones-Eversley, D.P.H., ’84, ’09, has joined the board of Volunteers of America Chesapeake, Inc., “a faith-based, nonprofit organization whose mission is to inspire self-reliance, dignity and hope through health and human services,” according to the organization’s website. Dr. JonesEversley works at Towson University, where she is an assistant professor in the Department of Family Studies and Community Development and executive director of the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance. The 2009 Alumnus of the Year in Public Health for Morgan’s School of Community Health and Policy, she earned two degrees at Morgan: her bachelor’s degree in political science and her Doctor of Public Health degree. Willie E. Lanier, Sr., ’67, former NFL linebacker and current Chair of MSU Foundation, Inc., was recently honored at his former high school, Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School, in Richmond, Va., during a “Hometown Hall of Famers” ceremony. The ceremony was presented by the Pro Football Hall of Fame and Allstate Insurance Company. Lanier, a business administration graduate of Morgan and President of The Lanier Group, LLC, was selected six times for the Pro Bowl and eight times as All-Pro, and was the first black middle linebacker in professional football. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1986. A romance novel by Brenda Stokes Lee, ’73, “Pleasure Principle,” is now available at Amazon.com and other booksellers, in in Kindle edition. The book was published by Daddy’s Girl Publishing House, in Baltimore. Cedric D. Lyles, ’02, composed the music for “Delilah,” a stage musical presented by ArtsCentric, a Baltimore-based performing arts production company dedicated to performing, promoting and preserving the arts. Lyles earned his bachelor’s degree in
music from Morgan, where he studied under the late Nathan M. Carter Jr., D.M.A. An educator, singer, musician and director, as well as a composer, he teaches music in the Upper School of Garrison Forest School in Owings Mills, Md. Amen Ra Mashariki, D.Eng., ’09, is serving as a 2012–2013 White House Fellow, placed at the Office of Personnel Management. The fellowship enables a select group of men and women to experience the inner workings of the federal government. Dr. Mashariki was previously working as a computer scientist and senior bioinformatics researcher at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. He also has eight years’ experience teaching advanced computer science to high school and university students. He earned his doctorate in engineering from Morgan. Erwin D. Polk, ’74, was appointed President of the African American Genealogical Society of Delaware, in January. Polk, who earned his Bachelor of Science in business administration from Morgan, has had a lifelong passion for history. His genealogical research has brought attention from the media on several occasions. He was interviewed by Bryant Gumble for NBC’s The Today Show in 1993, was featured in a Wilmington News Journal about his family in 1996 and was interviewed for another News Journal article about his ancestors in 2009. Marion E. Primas, Ph.D., ’58, has been honored by Worldwide Who’s Who for excellence, service and dedication in health and human services and by Continental Who's Who as a Pinnacle Professional in the field of mental health services. Dr. Primas, who earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Morgan, served as a senior public health advisor for the health resources and services administration of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for 48 years. Since retiring, she has traveled the world giving presentations on public health matters, including women’s health. She also serves charitable organizations such as the Disabled American Veterans, Paralyzed Veterans of America, Haiti Relief, UNICEF and organizations that assist in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. Island Def Jam Music Group has promoted Akinah Rahmaan, ’97, to Vice President, Marketing. Based in New York, she will oversee and direct marketing campaigns on behalf of her roster of Island Def Jam artists, which includes Frank Ocean, Big Sean, Pusha T, Jhene Aiko, Fabolous, Luke James and Teyana Taylor. Rahmann was previously Senior Director, Marketing for the successful record label. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in psychology from Morgan. The Rev. Warren A. Rhodes, Ph.D., ’73, is the screenwriter and director of “God’s Amazing Grace,” a film being produced by Calvary Pictures, Inc. and starring Clifton Davis. Dr. Rhodes, a playwright with writing and directing credits for two gospel musicals for the stage, is a professor emeritus of public health and allied health sciences at Delaware State University. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in psychology from Morgan. Tonja L. Short Ringgold, Ed.D., ’84, ’01, assistant secretary of higher education with the Maryland Higher Education Commission, was honored by the National Coalition of 100 Black Women’s Baltimore Metropolitan Chapter, at the chapter’s 23rd annual Torchbearers Awards Breakfast, held at Martin’s West in Baltimore, Md. Dr. Ringgold has 17 years’ experience in higher education and has held numerous administrative posts. She developed several courses in the community college leadership doctoral program at Morgan, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology and her doctorate in urban educational leadership.
Elva E. Tillman, ’71, principal counsel of Condemnation for the Baltimore City Department of Law, received two recent honors for her volunteer service: the 2012 BLSA Impact Award, from the University of Maryland King Carey School of Law Black Law Students Association (BLSA), and the 2012 Pro Bono Service Award from the Pro Bono Resource Center of Maryland, a Maryland State Bar Association Services Partnership. Tillman earned her B.A. degree in Spanish from Morgan and a master’s degree in urban and regional planning from Virginia Tech. She went on to earn a J.D. from the University of Maryland School of Law while coordinating and teaching graduate courses in Morgan’s City and Regional Planning program. Ludmilla Wikkeling-Scott, D.P.H., ’04, ’10, has received the Morgan State University Presidential Appreciation Award for Distinguished Alumni. Dr. Wikkeling-Scott , a Caribbean American of Surinamese origin, is chief executive officer of The Bryant Group, LLC. A public health expert in both Suriname and the U.S., she is a member of the Board of Commissioners of Maryland’s Governor’s Commission on Caribbean Affairs, and Suriname’s Ministry of Health. She was presented the Presidential Appreciation Award last year by Morgan President David Wilson and Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley. She earned her master’s and doctorate in public health from Morgan. Dr. Wikkeling-Scott is also president of the Public Health MSUNAA Alumni Chapter. Jan L. Williams, Ph.D., ’06, was elected Secretary of the Diversity Section of the American Accounting Association for the 2012–2013 academic year. Earlier in 2012, she was promoted to Associate Professor of Accounting, with tenure, at the University of Baltimore’s Merrick School of Business. Dr. Williams, one of only 194 African-American accounting professors in business schools in the U.S., was a participant in the Ph.D. Project, which recruits minority professionals from business into doctoral programs in all business disciplines. She earned her doctorate in business administration with a specialization in accounting from Morgan’s Earl G. Graves School of Business and Management and was the first person to be awarded a Ph.D. by the school. Reginald Winkfield, ’04, and two partners have launched the Rockville Victors, a semi-professional team competing in the American Professional Basketball League. Winkfield earned a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from Morgan and played on Morgan’s basketball team from 1999 to 2004. He is one of the general managers of the Victors. Morgan computer engineering graduate Jarad Wormley, ’08, has been named a Modern-Day Technology Leader by the Council of Engineering Deans of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Lockheed Martin Corporation, and US Black Engineer & Information Technology magazine. Wormley is a computer engineer for the U.S. Army Communications-Electronics Research, Development and Engineering Center (CERDEC), where he serves as the project leader for the DCGS-A Enabled Common Ground Station, a system that facilitates soldiers in situational awareness and battlespace visualization. He is also active in student outreach, serving as a mentor to Edgewood Middle School children and a representative on the CERDEC Intern Council.

Alumni: Morgan wants you to share your “Bear Pride” as a New Student Recruiter. This volunteer position involves attending local high schools and college fairs as a representative of Morgan and identifying quality high school students who are interested in the University. As an Alumni New Student Recruiter, you provide the one-on-one interaction, personal attention and encouragement that can lead students to choose Morgan over another school. Morgan has begun to expand its student recruitment areas outside of its traditional regions. The MSUNAA Pre-Alumni Council
The Pre-Alumni Council (PAC) is a group of students who have come together to get a clear understanding of being a true alumnus of Morgan State University. They learn the importance of having alumni stay involved and connected, and they learn to give back financially to their alma mater by paying annual dues and engaging in other forms of giving such as annual, planned and major gifts. The PAC’s projects include, among others: working with selected elementary schools and senior citizen centers in the area, and speaking at local senior high schools to get students to have a better understanding of preparing for and attending college. The Alumni Relations Office is reaching out to our alumni to volunteer with the PAC and be mentors to the group. Becoming a mentor for the PAC will help ensure that its members stay together until they graduate from Morgan State University.
