hello...

…and welcome to the September edition of the Moreton Hall Directory. ters Sally Wal r Contributo mawalters.co.uk sally@gem

What’s that I hear??... A quiet house! The kids are back to school, if like me, you are spent out from buying new uniforms, paying for days out and are thankful not to hear the words “I’m bored” for more than 5 hours of the day, you may be glad September is here. With the nights drawing in, we will be closing our curtains early and cosying up on the sofa with a good book to read. If you are a keen reader, have you ever thought about purchasing a Kindle? See page 41 to find out what this handy gadget offers us bookworms. Its time to start packing away your summer wardrobe, but if you are thinking “What did I wear last Autumn?”, don’t despair, take a look on page 40 for some great fashion ideas for this season.

Is he the one?

Falling in love is tricky, but it’s still the easy part in love. If you’re looking for true love and happiness, you need to know if he’s the one who’ll be there till the end. Is he the one for you?

In life, we come across a lot of great men and dating potentials. But not all good men make great dating potentials. Is he the one for you? How can you really tell? Relationships are like a perfect pair of shoes. It may look fancy when you see it, but you’re never going to know how good it’ll be until you take a walk together. When it comes to love, it’s best to trust our own instincts. Many times, we come across really nice men, but the chemistry may be lacking, or something may just feel wrong about it. But what happens when you find true love, and you just know he’s a perfect fit for you? Does that mean you’ve met the one for you, the one who’ll keep you happy for the rest of forever? Unfortunately, we’ve all met these men with whom we share crackling chemistry and sizzling moments. But it doesn’t always work out and materialise into a happy ending. At times like these, you need to think beyond chemistry and sizzle. You need to know if he’s the one for you in the long run. If you’re trying to find out if he’s the one, you need to understand what it takes to have a great long term relationship. And one of the most important requirements of long term love is communication. Does he tell you how he feels, and does he ask about your feelings? Communicating with each other over the smallest of emotions can actually help both of you understand each other better and avoid misunderstandings that can lead to painful confrontations in the years to come. Some men are so closed up about their feelings that it would only frustrate you every time you try to understand what he’s thinking. In many relationships, the men actually do know what their woman really wants. But they do nothing about it. Many men just take their girlfriends for granted, and pretend like they didn’t understand their girlfriend. How many times have we heard men say “you should have told me what you really wanted in the first place!”? It’s not like a guy can’t understand what his girlfriend wants. In most cases, they try not to care. Is he the one for you? No. Avoid these men who act dumb and pretend like girls are confusing and don’t express their feelings.

You’ll know he is the one if he sees you for who you really are. All women know men are visual creatures who are drawn to appearances first and everything else later. But that’s no excuse to be treated like an arm candy. Does he tell you that you look hot? Of course, he does. But does he appreciate your other qualities? Does he see the real person beyond your appearance? A man who looks at you as a dumb, good looking woman will never ever see the real you or understand your capabilities. And when he looks at you as just an arm candy, he’s never going to share his problems or ask for advice. And that’s never good for a relationship. When you’re in love, respect takes a whole new definition. When you’re in love, respect is all about making a partner feel good about themselves. A man who is in love respects the woman he loves. If he’s the one, he treats you with respect and takes care of your needs. When you go out, he’s chivalrous and courteous to you. Does he pick a fight, order you around or snap at you when you’re with friends? If he really does respect you, he will pay more attention to you and your needs than any other woman’s. Some men are eager to please other women, and won’t really care about their own girlfriend. This only makes you look more like his accessory than his lover. Tell him how you feel about it, but if his behaviour doesn’t change, perhaps it’s time you change your man. Men love their own guy tim. But hey, so do women! We need our space too, and it’s not just about hanging out with girl pals. This is especially true when both of you move in together. Does he get upset when you’re on phone with your friends, or does he sulk when you go out with your own friends? Being jealous is cute at first. But if he wants to be around you all the time, and stops you from having your own life, you need to tell him how you really feel. Does he offer to help you out? Does he go out of his way to help you when you ask him? Your problems are his, and his problems are yours too. That’s one of the things that make a relationship work, when you accept to share responsibility. And most men are really good at dodging their own responsibilities. So how can he help you with yours? A man who goes out of his way to help you out and share your responsibility sees you as a potential partner for life. And that’s the man you need in your life.

where have all the house spiders gone? Can you remember 10 – 20 years ago when it was a normal experience to find a black, stoutbodied and hairy-legged house spider in the bath? Or see one scuttling across the carpet? Or, horrifyingly, remember the rare occasion when a huge spider dashed out from under the sofa during ‘Eastenders’? But this doesn’t seem to happen any more. There are occasional house spiders, scientifically called Tegenaria domestica, still around but certainly in smaller numbers. That’s because they have been replaced in our homes by another spider species, often known as the daddy long-legs spider. This is a true spider, not to be confused with the daddy long-legs (a crane-fly) or the harvestmen (with 8 legs but just one body element instead of two) which are called daddy long-legs on the other side of the Atlantic. The daddy long-legs spider, Pholcus phalangioides,

could easily also be called the fingers spider. Found now in most homes, often in the top corner of bathrooms as well as elsewhere, they lurk with their long, thin finger-like legs and untidy web waiting for their prey. And their main prey is, of course, the house spider which they subdue with a weak venomous bite. The daddy long-legs spider is a tropical species which has colonised Suffolk over the last decade or two, and house spider numbers have plummeted as a result. Its defence against predators is remarkable. Touch a daddy long-legs spider gently, and it will often manically bounce up and down in its web for several seconds, vanishing in a motion-blur and hard to catch. Try it yourself; there are no known side effects for the spider although sometimes it jumps down in a fit of pique instead.

NEW CELEBRITY PATRON FOR SUFFOLK BASED REHAB CHARITY The Suffolk based drugs and alcohol rehabilitation charity, Focus12, has announced that singer and DJ Boy George is to join Russell Brand and Davina McCall as its latest celebrity patron. The announcement was made at Focus12’s 14th annual reunion, held yesterday at the Apex in Bury St Edmunds, where those who have been helped by the charity came together to celebrate their recovery. The event was attended by over 400 clients, ex-clients and supporters of Focus12, including patrons Boy George and Davina McCall. Speaking at the reunion, held at the Apex in Bury St Edmunds, Chief Executive, Chip Somers said: “George has long since been an active supporter of the work we do, and so to ask him to become a patron seemed a natural progression. We are absolutely delighted he has agreed to come on board, and are thrilled to welcome his fresh ideas and perspective. There is no doubt that without the continued and loyal support of Davina and Russell over the years, we wouldn’t be stood here today celebrating what amounts to over 260 years of Focus12 recovery in this room.”

Davina McCall, who made the announcement at the reunion added: “I couldn’t be more thrilled, George is a great advert for recovery and a really lovely bloke.” Boy George spoke to the crowd about his own battle with addiction, and how amazing he has found his recovery through total abstinence. He said: “Recovery is a beautiful thing – seeing the people you love getting the colour back in their skin, the life back in their eyes, is fantastic. I am really looking forward to making some serious money and raising the profile of Focus12.” themhd

The Master Composter by Paul Turner

Welcome to the Master Composter feature, where I will tell you about the joys of composting. I am a Master Composter Volunteer, which means that I have been trained by a charity called Garden Organics, in association with Suffolk County Council, and I devote my spare time to encouraging and assisting everyone to compost more. From the complete novice to the veteran composter, if you have a question about composting, then I will use this page to answer them.

How to use your compost As Autumn is approaching and is a good time to use your compost, I figured now was as good a time as any to look at the many ways your finished product can be used. I try and keep it simple with how I use the compost I have made. I spread the matured compost across flower beds and my vegetable patch to improve the soil structure and add nutrients for next years growing season. This doesn’t leave me very much in spring where I could have used some of the compost for potting on plants so I bulk up what I have with the leaf mould I made two years previous. The only other compost I am left with is from my wormery and I like to add that to a trench

18

themhd

for my runner beans. The rich compost will keep the beans happy as they dip their roots into the trench for a feed throughout the season, as well as retain important quantities of moisture.

Lawn dressing - Again in autumn, after aerating the lawn with either a garden fork or shoe spikes, dress the lawn with your compost to give it a feed and scatter grass seed in bare patches.

You may have your own use for the compost or even a different order of priority in which you use it. If you haven’t thought about how you are going to use the compost then here are some suggestions of what to do with your lovely crumbly finished product:

Potting - Seeds in spring need very little nutrients so avoid using your home made garden compost on its own. Mix it with leafmould and loam to make a suitable seed compost in a ratio of 1:1:1 For potting on and pricking out, you can use the same ingredients but add 2 parts of compost to 1 part each for leafmould and loam. Other ingredients you can use are grit or perlite to aid drainage. A layer of grit on the top of the compost will retain moisture.

Mulching - During the autumn you can pile compost around plants to retain the moisture for next year, or top dress perennials when they show in spring.

family&home

Poor soil - There are many reasons and soil types that may require you to add compost for it to improve into a place for plants to thrive. You may have clumps of clay that are wet and heavy in the winter and baked slid in the summer. Or light sandy soil that doesn’t contain enough nutrients for suitable root growth. By adding your compost year after year you can create a healthy soil with lots of microbes that enhance the soil for growing plants. Lay the compost across the soil and work in by forking the soil over in autumn or raking it in and allowing the worms to do the rest. Compost tea - your used compost can be made into a nutrient rich liquid feed by adding it to water and brewing for a few days. I haven’t tried this one myself but I understand that oxygen is needed to be added by means of a pump as otherwise the mixture becomes anaerobic and starts to smell. Much of the goodness is then lost. If you are interested in trying this method and have the appropriate equipment I would be happy to forward you instructions about how to brew your own compost tea. Also look out for future articles covering this method. Old grow bags and used compost There is no reason why this can’t be added to your flower beds to add structure to your soil. Caution should be used if diseased plants such as potatoes or tomatoes with blight have been in compost that is then added to a vegetable patch as the spores will be spread. Add to flower beds instead.

SEPTEMBER

in the garden

With the days becoming shorter and nights longer and cooler, this is the time to enjoy the last throes of flowering from late perennials such as asters and sedums. Many of the wonderful autumn flowers belong to the daisy family, their simple shapes and strong colours adding interest to any garden at this time of year.

Use a proprietary autumn fertiliser to encourage strong roots which is beneficial for the winter conditions ahead, and mowing can be reduced when the lawn starts to grow at a slower rate.

When combined with structural grasses the effect can be truly magical on a misty morning.

Before autumn truly sets in, roses still need to be sprayed against mildew and hedges neatly clipped. Planting at this time of year will allow perennials and shrubs to settle in before the harsh winter weather, and they will get you off to a good start next spring.

Late September is the perfect time to turn your attention to your lawn. Renovate established lawns by scarifing vigorously to remove debris (known as thatch) and spike to allow air into the soil and allow surface water to drain away.

The soil is still warm after the summer, (even though the last month has been dissappointingly on the cool side!) and the increasing humidity are perfect for plants to just put on a little growth before the first frosts.

New Hearing Aid Recycling Scheme Launched Local hearing care specialists, The Hearing Care Centre, have this month launched their brand new appeal to help thousands of hard-of-hearing individuals who have limited financial resources across the World. The Suffolk Hearing Aid Recycling Scheme, which has been created in co-operation with Lions International, requires members of the p ublic to donate unwanted, unused or broken hearing instruments, no matter how old or in what condition. These hearing aids are then recycled, repaired or refurbished and sent to countries in need by Lions International representatives. The World Health Organisation estimates that 278 million people worldwide have moderate to profound hearing loss in both ears. Yet, current annual production of hearing aids is estimated to meet less than 10% of global need. The poor are especially affected because they are unable to afford the preventative care necessary to avoid hearing loss, or hearing aids to improve their hearing. The Hearing Care Centre, who offer local, private hearing care services in Suffolk, have established well over a dozen donations points across the county, including locally at Mount Farm GP Surgery (Moreton Hall), Bury St Edmunds and Spectacular Opticians (High Street), Newmarket. n u R n e Chick

by Andrew Southwood

For the first time in about ten years I had my wife’s birthday present well and truly sorted months in advance. When I say sorted, what I actually mean is, I knew what I was going to get her. In fact I was feeling so smug with myself for coming up with such a brilliant idea I have to admit I almost forgot about the logistics of making it happen! So there we were, marking the passing of another year with a bespoke handmade birthday cake (made mainly by my 3 year old son) with 21ish (cough, cough) candles. I eagerly watched as she unwrapped my present. Jewellery? Chocolates? Spa weekend package? No – that would be far too easy. I’m sure it was excitement (although it may have been fear?) I detected in her eyes as

she took in the full extent of her gift. A book about chickens! That is to say, a book about keeping chickens in your town garden. Within a few minutes of handing over this surprise gift, it started to dawn on me that that was the easy bit and a lot of hard work lay ahead. It took a couple of weeks to fully research the chicken coop. Hours on the internet eventually culminated in the arrival of a flat pack henhouse. This was assembled and painted within a day or so. All going well so far! Now for the ‘run’. An awkwardly shaped dumping area at the side of our garden was to be the preferred location. The prospect of the chirpy chicks destroying our recently turfed lawn and feasting themselves on the raised

vegetable beds sent shivers down my spine. They would not be given free reign of the whole garden, not just yet anyway. The run was constructed out of a wire mesh, the sort so hard to cut that I suspect it would have comfortably enclosed sabre tooth tigers at the zoo. Wooden steaks were driven into the ground. This is the ground that hadn’t seen any rain in about 4 months and was more like reinforced concrete than earth. The finishing touches to the 5 star coop, a corrugated Perspex roof and egg collection hatch, was added. So a mere 4 weeks after I started (okay – give me a break! I was only doing this an hour or so every evening after the kids had gone to bed) the coop is virtually complete. It looks, at least in my opinion, great. Now all we need is the chickens, then the fun can really begin!

HOLIDAY EVENTS

The events put on by Abbeycroft Leisure did not get the interest it was hoped, the guys turned up every Wednesday, but sadly no children arrived, it’s a shame after all the effort that went into organising these sporting events. On the brighter side the event in the Abbey Gardens was a great success. The Moreton Hall Fun Day was also an excellent day, about four hundred people turned up throughout the day. Well done to the staff and team. There are some excellent evening entertainment events held in the community centre. Give them a look.

GolD LOOK OUT... In last months issue I stated that gold was worth £1,000 per ounce, by a gent called Paul. The Gold market is buoyant THIEVES ABOUT Ibutwasnotcorrected that high. I only forwarded what I was told, however, I also Over the past two months their have been several thefts on our estate. Raedwald Drive, two vans broken into and power tools stolen, only battery power tools were stolen from one van, the others were electrical power tools. At the other end of the estate the same thing, a van broken into and power tools stolen. Kembold Close one night someone stole solar lights, the following night they stole his garden ornaments and a week later on Raedwald Drive two ornaments, one of a boy and one of a young girl were stolen. These had only been in place less than three days prior to being stolen. Please keep your eyes open and if you see anything inform the police or email me and I will pass it on, if you have had anything stolen and you have not reported it, please do report it, it is the only way the police can be aware of what’s happening on our estate.

had two emails thanking me for bringing it to their attention, this couple were in the middle of selling their gold bits to a company but after reading that the price of gold was so high they went back to the company and demanded a better price and got it. It would be better if you spoke to a local jeweller if you have any doubts.

BUS SHELTER I have managed to get a bus shelter and ramp for Barton Road opposite the Farm shop, this will help mums get to the shelter with pushchairs and heavy shopping bags. I am still working to get a bus shelter at the bottom of Codling Road and Appledown Drive. There is a problem with this, as it means moving the existing bus stop away from the nearby houses. Planning permission is also needed, but we will keep working on this.

lIGHTs ouT About two issues ago I mentioned about the County reducing the lighting on the estate, I requested that if anyone had an issue with this or felt strongly for or against it to email me. I had one email and the person stated “the sooner the better” and that was it. I met a lady while walking my dog, she confirmed she and some other friends had no problem with lights out. I now read in EADT that the County are going ahead and the lights will be going out. On that note, Good night, sleep tight.

Until next time keep safe. Frank

The WI News In July we had had the second of our “field trips“ with a visit to the beautiful Cathedral in Bury followed by coffee and cake. Over 50 members made the trip and with several Guides we were well served and had an enjoyable and interesting time. August brought quite a turnout of members despite the holidays. There was lots to discuss with forthcoming events and despite being let down by our Speaker, several members talked of interesting experiences or shared amusing moments in their lives. It made for a good meeting and some prospective members said they had enjoyed it and were not disappointed by the lack of a speaker. We should do this more often given the wealth of experiences in the group!

Christ Church Moreton Hall August has been dominated by pictures of the riots which many of us have seen and momentous changes in the Middle East as regime after regime has toppled. But here on Moreton Hall we are probably more concerned about getting everybody ready to go back to school. There is the annual round of buying school uniforms, shoes, bags and equipment and with it both the joy of seeing our children grow and the sadness of knowing that one day they will leave us. Also, for those who cannot have children, or whose children have left home and have not maintained any sort of contact, the sadness is somewhat greater. Then here is the larger worry that even when relationships with our children are good, what sort of world are we sending them into? As much of the inner city, violence is due to peer pressure. People who would not otherwise commit crimes, let alone burn down other people’s houses, get caught up in the maelstrom of other people’s criminality. Perhaps the answer lies in our own hands. Back to school is not just something for our youngsters. It’s back to school for all of us. Perhaps we need to learn, or relearn, the lessons that have been forgotten, lessons concerning respect, law and order, honesty,

38

integrity, and above all the ability, both in terms of character and purpose, to say no. No to things that we know are wrong. No to the things and people which stop us from doing that which is right. No to people who say, “… go on, you must do this”. It is not for nothing that Jesus is known as the great moral teacher. But He is no ordinary teacher, in that He comes in search of His class even when they have played truant and run away. He seeks out those who want to learn, those who want to live better lives, and gives His life to them. He shares His life and not only shows them a better way to live, but gives them rules to live by and, above all, the power to do it.

for us to live and we are saddened when we don’t hear those words from our religious leaders which we need to keep us on the right track. The Christian message is, of course, a difficult one. On the one hand there is unconditional love and forgiveness which is useful to know, but on the other hand there is repentance, which is to do with knowing that you have done something wrong, taking personal responsibility for it, and doing something about it. This aspect of the Christian message is something that we have lost sight of in recent years.

Society only works when each individual member takes responsibility for their lives and their actions and no longer expects a free ride at the expense of others. There was a time when this country was thoroughly Christian. It is about doing the best for all. Christianity was at the forefront of In a society where everyone does the best for all, no one is left out all our thoughts and our actions. It made sense of our daily living, it and forgotten. But in a society helped us to live law abiding lives where the only person that matters and, above all, it gave purpose and is me, the cracks begin to appear and eventually things like riots will direction to our political leaders who stopped being power-seeking happen. bellyachers and became people It is a hard thing to admit you are concerned to set the right moral example as well as taking decisions wrong. It is a harder thing to put it right and to live a new life. All which were for the good of all, of us are being spoken to by God not just for them and their party. now, to stop living just for our own Because of the Christian legacy in convenience but to live for others. Mothers and fathers are taking hard this country, we still know deep decisions to find enough money down that this is the right way

to pay for new school uniforms and equipment so their children will have a good start to this academic year. Maybe we all need to start taking stock about how we are living and think about making sacrifices for others so that everyone gets a better life. This is exactly the approach that Jesus took and this is why at Christ Church, Moreton Hall we remind everybody through our

public services and through Alpha. Why don’t you return to school, start that new life that you need and if we can get this going across the whole nation, who knows what might happen. Certainly we should see an end to criminal riots and the breakdown of law and order. With every good wish, Yours sincerely, Jonathan Ford

Parents who are concerned about finances, especially during the current economic squeeze, could find the sales help ease the strain on their budget. Figures show the cost of raising a baby in the first year, including pre-birth purchases, can run between £1,000 to £3,500. The Bury St Edmunds NCT sale is probably one of the biggest events of this type in the country. The sales run twice a year and in the spring we had over 500 bargain hunters through the door and 100 volunteers helping us on the day. Sellers drop their bag of priced items off with us in the morning and we do the rest. The NCT, which is a registered charity, takes a commission on items sold and writes the buyer a cheque for the rest. vitality.

Director, The self Centre

This month we learn about the importance of looking after your kidneys and the natural remedies and exercises that help. Your kidneys are two bean-shaped organs, each about the size of your fist. They’re located at the back of your upper abdomen, one on either side of your spine. The kidneys’ main function is to eliminate excess fluid and waste material from your blood. High blood pressure and diabetes - are the most common causes of kidney failure.

consult a professional therapist. Acupuncture is particularly renowned for focusing on healing kidney energy or “qi” as the Chinese call it. Homeopathy and Nutritional supplements offer some excellent treatments and regular sessions of massage, reflexology or relaxation are all shown to decrease stress and therefore the toll on the adrenals.

The kidneys also house the Adrenal Glands which are chiefly responsible for regulating the body’s stress response through the synthesis of cortisol and adrenaline. In other words, the task of your adrenal glands is to rush all your body’s resources into “fight or flight” mode by increasing production of adrenaline and other hormones. When healthy, your adrenals can instantly increase your heart rate and blood pressure, release your energy stores for immediate use, slow your digestion and other secondary functions, and sharpen your senses.

Tai Chi and Qi Gong both have specific exercises to stimulate the energy of the kidneys. They both work on the same principles as Acupuncture in that the body is made up of “qi” or energy and for the body to remain healthy this energy has to flow freely. Qi Gong in particular focuses a lot on the individual organs of the body and balancing out their energy levels to maintain optimum health. Yoga also has postures that benefit specific organs of the body, the Upward Facing Dog pose lists stimulating kidneys and adrenal function as one of its main benefits:

With so much stress in our lives our Adrenals can sometimes get overworked so it is important to look after ourselves and create some space for some “me time”. There are many herbal remedies and nutritional supplements that are of great benefit to the adrenal glands and if you lead a stressful lifestyle it might be a good idea to

upward-facing Dog Pose

Benefits: Stimulates kidney and adrenal function, expands the chest and opens the heart centre, expands the rib cage and increases lung capacity, energizes the spine, prevents hunched upper back, relieves backache, strengthens arms and legs, and increases blood flow in abdomen and pelvis Contraindications: Herniated lower back disks, Severe Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Neck problems Instructions: Lying on your front place your hands underneath your shoulders with your fingertips in line with the top of your shoulders. Gently push on your hands to lift your chest off the floor. Make sure that you do not round your shoulders but draw the shoulder blades down your spine and lengthen your neck by drawing your head upwards towards the ceiling. Ensure that you spread your fingers and take the weight through the whole of your hands not just your wrists. Hold for 6 deep breaths. As you get stronger you will lift your hips and eventually your knees off the floor and only the front of your feet will remain on the ground. natural help for the kidneys Parsley is probably the bestknown yet most underused herb in our culinary repertoire. Parsley is a

powerful natural diuretic. It is packed with Vitamins A and C. It contains more beta-carotene than a large carrot. You would have to eat 2 oranges to get as much vitamin C as in a cup of minced parsley. The same serving has more calcium than a cup of milk and 20 times as much iron as a serving of liver. It is loaded with minerals such as potassium, iron, phosphorus, magnesium and calcium. If you want a natural breath refresher you can’t beat the chlorophyll in Parsley. It helps with muscle spasms and aids in good digestion as well as preventing wind. It flushes out the kidneys and soothes the liver. Parsley can be used as a tea, or when made as a pesto, can flush

the kidneys by stimulating urination. If you’re kidneys are sluggish drink Parsley tea. It can also pump up the nutritional value of vegetable juices. Parsley can also be used as a mild laxative. It will also help reduce the cramping pain associated with diarrhea. Parsley helps move excess mucous from the body. It can help expel parasites. It has been historically used with menstrual flow problems, and cramping. It should not be used in excess with pregnant women as it has been shown to stimulate uterine contractions. As a digestive aid Parsley tea cannot be beat. It has been known to lessen asthma attacks and relieve the congestion of

colds. Because of its high iron content it is good for the treatment of anemia. It reduces inflammation systemically within the body. Parsley stimulates good circulation. Coping with a Your bunion is like a lump on the big toe however the growth of a bunion implies modifications inside the bony figure of the foot. It is just a progressive problem which is often inherited. Bunions can be unpleasant nonetheless there are many treatment options which will help to reduce the pain. Nine out of ten bunions take place in females, usually the end result of putting on footwear that are too tight. By far the most common reason for bunions is wearing shoes that are very small and force the toes of the feet together. Bunions can also result from injuries to the feet, osteoarthritis or congenital deformities. Bunions commonly appear as a bump at the starting of the big toe although small toe may be affected as well. Indicators of a developing bunion may possibly include soreness, swelling, a burning sensation and even numbness. Your skin at the bottom of the toe might thicken and callouses or corns may also grow. The soreness that arises because of bunion can vary greatly in intensity. Although people who develop bunions may not always see a health care professional, sometimes it is best just to get it checked out.

Bunion

Using high heel shoes regularly or too small shoes that crowd your toes could increase the risk of developing bunions. If bunions tend to run in your family members or you have problem of arthritis you will have a greater chance of getting bunions. Treatment for bunions consists of changing shoes, applying ice bags on the area that is affected and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen to reduce pain. A doctor might suggest padded footwear insoles or tape to reduce strain on the foot. Bunions do not always bring about troubles but also complications like bursitis may occur. Bursitis is a problem in which the sac of fluid in the affected joint become infected. The problem is distressing and could affect mobility. An advanced bunion which grows bigger and also becomes more sore could have an impact on the alignment of the feet making it hard to walk. Your doctor might suggest orthotic systems to support the foot and alleviate discomfort. In some instances, surgery treatment may be needed to take out bloated cells or part of the bone to realign the feet. Bunions can certainly be avoided by simply wearing properly fitted boots and shoes that provide ease and comfort and also support to the feet. See your doctor in the developing stages of a bunion to prevent unneeded distress and further issues afterwards.

The summer has finally drawn to a close, and it’s now that many of us start a winter hibernation, staying at home much more, nursing steaming mugs of hot chocolate and hearty stews. While there’s certainly nothing wrong with doing that some of the time, health does start to suffer if it’s all we do. Here are a few ideas to make it easier to stay healthy over the winter months.

Eating well When it’s cold outside, it’s tempting to fill up on stodgy foods to help our bodies keep us warm. It’s true that we need extra calories in cold weather as we burn more than usual. However, it’s easy to let this become an excuse for eating badly, and when combined with lowerthan-normal levels of exercise, that’s a recipe for gaining weight, which may be hard to shift come spring. To avoid this, up your fruit and vegetable intake rather than your intake of carbohydrates – not only are the calories lower, the vitamins are vital for warding off winter colds. Try leaving out or lowering the amount of meat you put into soups and stews and use vegetables to bulk them out instead – you’ll still get a warming, filling meal, but a healthier one. And always eat brown bread, pasta and rice rather than the white versions – you’ll feel fuller for much longer.

getting moving Exercising outdoors when the sun’s shining is fun. When it’s snowing, it’s pretty much impossible. Not everyone can afford a gym membership for winter exercise, but that’s no reason to become inactive. Get yourself an indoor exercise kit, starting with weights, a balance ball and a yoga mat. There are many good exercise books and DVDs on the market that will show you how to use them. If you’re short of money to buy them yourself, perhaps they’d make good Christmas gift ideas.

Something different A good diet and a bit of exercise will keep our bodies healthy, but sometimes our minds need a little pampering, particularly as lack of sunlight at this time of year can be depressing. To get out of a winter rut, get out and do something you wouldn’t normally do. Things such as going for a spa treatment, booking experience days or going on a day trip somewhere new are all good ways to get out of the house and out of the habit of sitting on the sofa watching television every weekend. themhd

Congratulations to A Super Slimmer

When Allison joined Moreton Hall Slimming World Evening Group in last year she had a dream....... To lose 7 stone in one year! A few weeks ago Allison’s dream came true. At 38 years old, Allison was initially referred to Slimming World by her GP as she was suffering from high blood pressure. She had tried calorie counting diets in the past but found them time consuming, boring and hard to stick to without group support. Allison enjoys slimming world because of the huge variety of food that you can eat, likes cooking the delicious slimming world recipes and has found the friendly support network that slimming world provides invaluable. Losing weight has meant she can walk further with her Dogs and has given her confidence to compete at dog agility. She has also recently taken up Aqua Aerobics and going to the gym and finds she has bags more energy. Allison’s Slimming World consultant Helen is thrilled that Allison ditched calorie counting and found slimming world. Especially after welcoming a new report into the

serious health risks of obsessive calorie counting which she says “highlights the dangers of modern faddy diets”. The recent report by the Future Foundation think-tank revealed that millions of Britons are at risk of conditions like heart disease and cancer because their obsessive diets are causing them to miss out on essential vitamins and minerals. “At Slimming World we encourage slimmers to eat unlimited amounts of foods that are low in energy density and fill you up. Members choose from a huge list of Free Foods, including fruit and vegetables, pasta, rice, potatoes, pulses, lean meat and fish, without ever having to count, weigh or measure. There’s no need to take drastic steps like living on tiny portions or liquid foods, or cutting out certain foods or food groups to lose weight” Allisons journey continues as she wishes to lose a further 2 stone to reach her target weight but with her drive and determination, the support of likeminded slimmers, and weekly weigh ins- healthy eating has already become the habit of a lifetime.

Morning Group:

What a fantastic year of successes we have had so far in 2011!! In our ‘Couple of the Year’ competition in February eight couples who regularly attend the Thursday morning sessions celebrated with a fabulous total weight loss of 46.5st. and a combined total of 340 years of marriage!! Congratulations to them all!! In March we celebrated with our ‘Greatest Loser’ and several members were contenders with 3 ladies all having lost over 6 stone. To raise awareness of the growth of obesity in the community we ran a 12 week ‘Let’s Beat It’ campaign and a further 1276lbs, that’s over 1/2ton was lost. The benefits of weight loss is great for your self esteem and enables you to buy clothes off the peg etc. and our ‘Men of the Year’ also proved it’s great for your health with improvements to blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes - in several cases lowering medication or being able to stop it completely!! Benefits that can’t be bought over the counter. Our latest competition ‘Woman of the Year’ gave us great pride in our lovely ladies that strive each week to achieve their Dreams and Goals or as Target members to remain at their chosen weight. We enjoyed a tasty, healthy eating buffet while listening to fabulous stories that bought a tear to the eye

Organised by the Hospice’s Special Events Committee, of which Andrew and Gina are members, the event promises to be a fantastic family day out, suitable for all ages. Andrew said: “We encourage visitors to spend the day at the event, bring their own picnics or enjoy the excellent on-site food and drink. The crucially needed funds raised go to our local Hospice, which serves the community so well.” This year, event sponsors Carrs will be exhibiting four classic cars – the BMW 328 sports car, the BMW M1 sports car, the BMW 327 coupé, and the limited edition Mini Cooper S with John Cooper Works GP kit. Another special attraction at the day will be famous rally driver Paddy Hopkirk’s 1965 Morris Mini Cooper S 1275. The car was prepared as a ‘works’ replica to compete in the 1990 Pirelli Classic Marathon, which Paddy and co-driver Alec Poole won. In addition to the many vehicles on show, visitors will be able to enjoy live music, craft stalls, a climbing wall, children’s fun area and more. The event will be open from 11am-4.30pm. Advance tickets are available from Carrs BMW and Bury St Edmunds Tourist Information Centre, priced £6 per adult, concessions £4, or a family ticket (two adults and two children) for £15. Director: Lone Scherfig starring: Anne Hathaway, Jim Sturgess, Romola Garai, Patricia Clarkson Based on the phenomenal bestseller, Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess star in a love story spanning 20 years. On 15 July 1988, University friends Emma (Anne Hathaway) and Dexter (Jim Sturgess) graduate and go their separate ways. Their lives - and loves - take radically different directions, but they’ve forged a bond that’s destined to last. Over the next two decades, we revisit Em and Dex on the anniversary of their graduation - but will they share a happy ending? Author David Nicholls previously wrote ‘Starter For 10’, adapted for the screen in 2006. His later novel, ‘One Day’, was a critically acclaimed bestseller, which he’s adapted himself for this film version. Fans of the book will be delighted to find that Danish director Lone Scherfig’s follow up to her Oscar-nominated ‘An Education’ retains the all-important UK setting. And as she previously demonstrated in ‘Becoming Jane’, US star Anne Hathaway is a dab hand at the English accent...

Director: Mark Waters starring: Jim Carrey, Carla Gugino, Angela Lansbury Jim Carrey stars in a family comedy about a man whose home - and life - get taken over by penguins! Tom Popper (Jim Carrey) is a stressed-out businessman who one day learns he’s inherited six penguins. Trouble is, Tom lives in a swanky New York apartment. It’s not long before his new chums are creating a mess, sleeping in his bed and generally making it difficult for Tom to find time to go to work. The solution is obvious, isn’t it? Turn that apartment into a snowy winter wonderland for new friends Loudy, Lovey, Bitey, Nimrod, Captain and Stinky. But Tom’s snooty neighbours are less than enthusiastic about his cosseted menagerie. ‘Mr Popper’s Penguins’ is based on the 1938 book by Richard and Florence Atwater, which has delighted generations of children. The film combines two sure-fire box office winners - Jim Carrey and penguins. And yes, you do get to see them dance!

Yes, that’s right - cowboys take on marauding aliens in this genrebending sci-fi Western! 1875, New Mexico Territory. A stranger (Daniel Craig) arrives in the sunbaked outpost of Absolution with a mysterious shackle on his wrist and no memory of his past. He soon finds that the townsfolk don’t take kindly to outsiders. What’s more, Absolution is ruled with an iron rod by Colonel Dolarhyde (Harrison Ford). But the climate of fear gets a whole lot worse when mysterious alien invaders start to swoop down at astonishing speed, blinding residents with bright lights as they snatch them one-by-one. As the outcast gunslinger begins to recall his past, he realises that he holds the one secret that could save this desolate town from devastation. With the help of the elusive Ella (Olivia Wilde), he pulls together former opponents townsfolk, Dolarhyde and his boys, outlaws and Apache warriors - for an epic showdown.
