1974- THE PERFECT ILLUSION OF THE ROARING TWENTIES
Directed by: Jack Clayton. || Technicolor. With Robert Redford playing Jay Gatsby, the cinematic experience was sure to impress, and it did just that. Clayton illustrates a candid version of the Gatsby universe. Rather than tying the film to a single interpretation of the novel, it provides a direct translation of Fitzgerald’s epic piece from words to film. Screen time is evenly split between Nick Carraway’s perception of the story and Gatsby’s heroic actions. A tone of the blurred 1920s glamour resonates throughout it. Clayton crafts a drunken illusion of the Roaring Twenties, relying solely on Nick Carraway’s narrative to reveal the fiasco within.
