NICOLA VALLEY NEWS HOSPITAL EXPANSION

Fundraising efforts off to hot start Michael Potestio THE MERRITT HERALD

It’s a lofty commitment, but the Nicola Valley Heath Care Endowment Foundation and Nicola Valley Health Care Auxiliary got a good head start Wednesday on their goal of raising nearly $700,000 for the new emergency room at the Nicola Valley Hospital currently under construction. Local businessman Randy Ryzak handed the endowment foundation a cheque for $100,000 to put towards the project at a ground breaking ceremony last Wednesday (Aug. 30), making a significant dent in the funds left to raise. “My wife Linda and I live in the community and we feel it’s a privilege to be able to make a donation to

a good cause,” said Ryzak. “Hopefully we never have to use the facility.” He said they felt the donation would bet a great way to kickstart the fundraising campaign. Fundraising efforts for the hospital officially got underway last week, with others committing funds to the project during the ceremony. Jim Adams, executive director of Scw’exmx Community Health Services personally donated $1,000 to the project, and the local rotary club donated $3,000 as well. “In summary, we are going to contribute $550,000, the hospital auxiliary is going to contribute $100,000,” foundation vice chair Jerry Sanders told the Herald. “Those funds are going to equipment and supplies and furnishings — not

raising these funds will take “a broad community effort just like any major health care facility in any other community.” He said Merritt is a community that’s proven itself capable of giving and asked members of the public to open their cheque books to donate

some funds. “This is for your community and its future, and your kids’ future. We don’t want anyone to ever have to rely on an emergency room, but you’re sure glad it’s there when you do need it,” said O’Fee.

NICOLA VALLEY NEWS COUNTRY MUSIC

Local stars added to Walk Michael Potestio THE MERRITT HERALD

Thanks to the generosity of their American friend, two local musicians have been honoured with their very own monuments designed to look like the Walk of Stars plaques that adorn the downtown. Longtime Merrittonian country music singers Gary Cooper and Joe Lonsdale were honoured with the plaques mounted just outside the Adelphi Hotel — a spot you can find them playing most nights. It all came to fruition thanks to Millie McClatchy, who frequents Merritt each summer to visit Lonsdale and Cooper, and take in a country music festival held at the Adelphi Hotel in August, which attracts musicians from around the country. “I’ve been coming here 17 years and I heard all the stuff about the Walk of Stars [so] I walked around and I didn’t see Joe’s and I didn’t see Gary’s,” said McClatchy. Taking matters into her own hands, McClatchy found out who made the stars for the local organization and decided to fund the creation of two new the stars herself. The monuments boast all the same features as the other stars around town, with the handprint and signature of the country music artist pressed into a star-shaped piece of cement alongside their picture in a wooden frame. “It’s just amazing,” Lonsdale said of McClatchy’s generosity. Both Cooper and Lonsdale have had long and distinguished country music careers. In 2008, Cooper was inducted into the B.C. Country Music Association (BCCMA), and Lonsdale’s music career brought him to places around Europe. He produced a solo

album in 1992. Walk of Starts president Ron Sanders said that while the Walk of Stars didn’t undertake this initiative, he’s glad to see McClatchy did. “We’re OK with that,” said Sanders, adding that he believes the Walk of Stars took Lonsdale’s and Cooper’s handprints but didn’t have the funds to mount the stars. Sanders said the organization has a backlog of about 50 handprints they haven’t

had the money to create a star for yet, and that it costs about $5,000 to create one of these monuments. “They should of been the first stars out there because they’re hometown boys,” said McClatchy. “They’ve given me life. My life is music and they’ve kept me alive,” she added. “The more the merrier,” said Sanders. “They’re real legitimate musicians.” Lonsdale said he met Millie in 2003 while in the U.S. jamming with

some country music pals of his. After meeting Millie she soon joined them on stage and before you know it they were like family. “I can’t even tell you how much love is in my heart for these guys,” said McClatchy, who added that she then met Cooper through Gary when she’d visit Merritt taking in their performances at the Adelphi Hotel.

VIEWPOINT EDITORIAL

Can religion bring peace? Next week, it’s back to the anniversary of 9/11 attacks on the World Trade NARAYAN MITRA Centre. Though You Gotta Have the inten- FAITH sity of anniversary ‘celebrations’ have waned over the years, the memories of the dastardly terrorist attacks have not. Presently, with the recent happenings on the Korean peninsula, the world is waiting with bated breath about the possibility of bonechilling disasters. In our own province of B.C., the raging fire season this year has produced much discomfort, fear and even tears to those whose lives have been nervously affected. Some churches have been led to keep their doors open for people to come, talk and seek God’s intervention in the form of drought-quenching rains. Questions are raised, as always in painful circumstances, about the role of religion as a source of peace and comfort. On one hand, the pervading ‘sickness’ of religious violence has increased in the current era and has been gaining the attraction of historians, sociologists, political scientists, as well as scholars of religious studies. In particular, the last 50 years or so have seen a rise in JewishMuslim, Hindu-Muslim, HinduChristian, and, in the latest instance, even Buddhist-Muslim animosity in border areas of Myanmar. Religious conflicts in other parts of the world have evoked new challenges and spurred thinking about the role of religion in the international political arena.

North Korea: time to hit the panic button? The last time when North Korean nuclear weapons might have been headed off by diplomacy was 15 to 20 years ago, when there was a deal freezing North GWYNNE DYER Korean work on The international nuclear weapons, STAGE and then one stopping the country’s work on long-range ballistic missiles. If they had been negotiated with the same attention to detail that was given to the recent deal that has frozen Iran’s nuclear programme for ten years, maybe North Korea’s quest for nuclear-tipped ICBMs could have been stopped for good — or maybe not, because North Korea has always wanted an effective deterrent to the permanent U.S. nuclear threat. At any rate, both the nuclear and the missile deals with North Korea failed after a couple of years. Pyongyang and Washington were equally to blame for the break-downs, resorting to tit-for-tat retaliation for various perceived breaches of the deal by the other side. But it was the United States that had more

to lose, since it faced no nuclear threat from North Korea UNLESS the deals were abandoned and North Korea’s weapons research went ahead. What we have seen recently — two ICBM tests in July, another one last month, and now what was almost certainly North Korea’s first test of a thermonuclear weapon (hydrogen bomb) — is the inevitable result of the failure then. It took a lot of time and effort to get Pyongyang’s bomb and missile programmes to this point, and it seems clear that Kim Jongun’s regime decided the safest way to test the new weapons and vehicles was all at once. He’s right. Stringing the tests out over a couple of years might have given the country’s enemies time to organize a complete trade embargo against North Korea, or maybe even some form of attack. The safer course was to bunch the tests up, get the outraged reactions over fast, and then hope the whole issue will fade into the background. That’s what both India and Pakistan did in 1998, and it worked for them. Everybody eventually got used to the idea that they were more or less legitimate nuclear weapons powers. India and Pakistan didn’t bother doing all their missile tests at once, because they had

enough space to carry them out over their own land and maritime territory. North Korea is much smaller and entirely surrounded by Chinese, Russian and Japanese territory, so any long-range tests are bound to pass over one of those countries. Pyongyang chose Japan, because it is a U.S. ally. But even its ICBM test on Aug. 30, when the Japanese government ordered its citizens in parts of Hokkaido into the shelters, did not enter Japanese airspace. The missile crossed Japan at a sub-orbital altitude, and the Japanese authorities knew that it would as soon as the boost phase ended. The pictures of allegedly panic-stricken Japanese civilians in shelters were propaganda meant to serve Prime Minister Abe’s project for remilitarizing Japan. There is no good ‘military option’ available to the United States and its allies in the current crisis, even though President Trump says “We’ll see.” A direct U.S. attack on North Korea using only conventional weapons would not get all of North Korea’s nukes, which are hidden in hardened underground sites or moved around by night on mobile launchers.

OPINION

Economics inescapable From Page 6 Noted scholars continue to echo the dual sentiment that “religion brings war, religion brings peace.” One paradoxical question keeps arising: Why is religion a source of conflict? The answer often given is because religion appears to be absolute, divisive, and insufficiently rational. In When Religion Becomes Evil, Charles Kimball defines religion as that which “evokes a wide variety of images, ideas, practices, beliefs and experiences — some positive and some negative.” He espouses the theory that religion is a central feature of human life. We all see many indications of it every day and we all know it when we see it. Kimball concludes that religious convictions, locked into absolute truths, can easily lead people to see themselves as God’s agent. Its followers are then emboldened and capable of violent and destructive behaviour in the name of religion. However, he does not present convincing arguments which distinguish religious violence from secular violence. Also, his definition of religion does not clearly point out what

does and does not qualify as “religion.” He ignores other kinds of nationalism, despite acknowledging that blind religious zealotry is similar to unfettered patriotism. Other scholars claim that religion is prone to conflict because it produces a particular intensity of non-rational passion that is not subject to the firm control of reason. Various words such as “rage,” “passion,” or “fanaticism,” are often used to describe the mental state of religious actors driven to conflict and violence. Historian Scott Appleby says that religion has two faces. It is a powerful medicine, but its driving passion can be and is used in the service to peace as well as inciting violence. He contends that religion has an ability to sustain cycles of violence beyond the point of rational calculation and enlightened self-interest. On the other hand, he says, religious fervour — unrestrained religious commitment – does not necessarily lead to violence. The question, then, is: How does religion create peace? An analysis of theories of religious violence opens the door for strategies that would help ensure religions can be harnessed for peace making as opposed to the

absolute, divisive, and irrational markers and influences that have enabled inter-group violence, war and conflict. Several strategies for transformation of religion into a force of peace can be suggested. First, the pursuit of dialogue among religions can be an influence. The call for dialogue is the need for education within various faith traditions. Second, the strategy of fostering economic development, especially as it benefits the poor and the marginalized in any religious society. Religion is powerfully conditioned by the underlying economic and political environments in which all human life remains deeply rooted. Third, the strengthening of democracy on both national and local levels is necessary. Along with economic development, there is a great need to artfully promote the values of democracy. Religion can be an effective source of conflict and, at the same time, a resource of peace in motivating believers toward tolerance and peaceful acceptance of others. Narayan Mitra is the Pastor of Merritt Baptist Church at 2499 Coutlee Avenue, Merritt.

‘Fire and fury’ not an option From Page 6 It would also call down “fire and fury” on Seoul from ten thousand North Korean artillery pieces and short-range rockets. A U.S. nuclear attack would probably still not get all of Kim Jong-un’s nukes: North Korea is the hardest intelligence target in the world. Pyongyang may already be able to reach the United States with one or two ICBMs carrying thermonuclear warheads, and it can certainly reach all of South Korea and Japan. The political options for the United States and its Asian allies are equally constrained. Trump’s talk of stopping U.S. trade with any country that trades with North Korea is really aimed at China (which already operates selective embargoes on various North Korean exports). But cutting U.S. trade with

China would cause immense disruption to the American economy, and it’s unlikely that Trump would actually do it. Normally, when human beings encounter a problem that they cannot eliminate, they find ways of living with it. It often takes a while for them to get there, however, and we are currently in the dangerous phase where people (or at least some people) are convinced that there must be SOMETHING they can do to make the problem go away. The only excuse for radical action now would be a conviction that Kim Jong-un is a crazy man who will use his nuclear weapons to launch an unprovoked attack on the United States, even though it would certainly lead to his own death and that of his entire regime. If you truly believe that, then the right course of action is an all-out nuclear attack on North Korea right now.

DIAMOND VALE REMEMBERS On July 1, 2017, Canada celebrated its sesquicentennial — or 150th — anniversary. One-hundredand-fifty years worth of history is a lot to remember — so each week in 2017, the Herald will run this special section to remind you of the remarkable accomplishments, important historical figures, and maybe even a few fun facts you might not have known about our country. This week in Canadian history: Sept. 11, 2001:

Photo of Gander airport in Newfoundland and Labrador, Sept. 11, 2001. Photo courtesy of Library and Archives Canada

Gander airport in Newfoundland and Labrador received thousands of passengers after terrorists used airliners to attack the World Trade Center in New York. Hundreds of flights to the United States were diverted to Gander, Halifax and other Canadian airports. Operation Yellow Ribbon involved the grounding of more than 200 passenger flights at 17 different airports across the country on Sept. 11, as Canadian airspace closed in response to the terrorist attacks occuring in the United States. More than 6,000 passengers and crew members stayed in Gander for up to six days following the attacks. With a population (at the time) of about 10,000, the town’s hospitality towards their temporary guests became the subject of a musical titled Come From Away. The play was nominated for seven Tony awards in 2017. Thanks to Library and Archives Canada for this excerpt. Find out more about Canada’s history every day at www.baclac.gc.ca/eng/onthisday/. Otherwise, start dialling back your rhetoric, because you are eventually going to have to accept that North Korea now has a usable nuclear deterrent. You can live with that, because it’s better than fighting a nuclear war. Gwynne Dyer is an independent journalist whose articles are published in 45 countries.

It takes a strong community to get over a tragedy like the one Diamond Vale School faced six months ago. When Kaitlynne, Max and Cordon Schoenborn were killed in their home last April the community pulled together. They found a way to heal and get past the death of these three innocent, vibrant individuals. It is something few residents will ever forget, and so the school decided to give everyone a place to sit and remember three kids who offered so much to the people in their lives. “There was a decision made that we had to do something,” explained Diamond Vale PAC president Terry Balan. “This just seemed right.”

Largest fundraising campaing ever From Page 6 Sanders said this is the largest fundraising campaign the foundation has taken on since he became a board member 25 years ago. “The most recent one prior to this was Berta Fraser Centre at the Gillis House, and that was considerably less money, but it was in the neighbourhood of $300,000,” said Sanders. Fundraising events for the ER expansion are currently in the works, he told the Herald. “We’re planning

a social — probably October — and that will be a wine and cheese kind of event. We might come up with some ideas about raising some funds at that event,” he said. “So far it’s just a wine and cheese social, and letting people know where we’re at. We’ll have some posters and that kind of thing set up.” The hospital’s ER is being expanded from 100 square metres to approximately 500 square metres, and will include features such as a covered ambulance bay, a separate ambulance entrance, confi-

dential triage and registration spaces and a new nurse station. The $6.5 million project is being funded primarily by the IHA and a $2.24 million contribution from the Thompson Regional Hospital District. Construction is in full swing as of last week, marking the start of what will be about a year of work before the expanded ER is complete. “They’re starting to dig a hole, so we’re starting to raise money,” said Sanders. Nicola Valley Food Bank aiming to stock shelves

NOTICE OF PUBLIC OPEN HOUSE

To be held by M. K. Ince and Associates Ltd. regarding a Proposal to Build Clean Energy Projects Project Name: Mount Mabel Wind Energy Project (Mabel East and Mabel West) Project Location: The proposed projects are located on provincial Crown Land on Mount Mabel, north of the City of Merritt, and south of the City of Kamloops, in the Thompson-Nicola Region of BC. M. K. Ince and Associates Ltd and 09915632 B.C. Ltd (operating as the Mount Mabel Wind Energy Project) are planning to develop and construct two wind energy projects, Mabel East and Mabel West. Due to the size and scope of the proposed Project (less than 50 MW), it is exempt from the British Columbia Environmental Assessment Act (SBC 2002 c.43). Approvals and public consultation are being courted throughout the Development Plan process administered by the BC Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations. The purpose of the Project is to generate emission-free, renewable energy as a long-term energy source for the British Columbia electrical grid.

Open House Location: DATE: Tuesday, September 19, 2017 TIME: 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. PLACE: Merritt Civic Centre 1950 Mamette Ave Merritt, British Columbia

The food bank has plenty of fresh food, but not enough nonperishable items, says manager Elissa Barron. Cole Wagner/Herald

After fires and floods battered the B.C. interior this year, local food banks stepped up to provide relief to families in need. But all of that good will has put a strain on supply — especially at the local Nicola Valley Food Bank — which is why organizers are pinning their hopes on this year’s Thanksgiving Food Drive as a way to restock the shelves. “You know, it’s that time of year when we’re getting all the nice fresh veggies and whatnot from people, but we also need those staples,”

explained Elissa Barron, manager at the Nicola Valley Food Bank. To participate in the Thanksgiving food drive, Merrittonians need only to leave a bag of unopened, nonperishable food items at their doorstep by 9:30 a.m. on Sept. 16. Drivers will circulate through town to pickup donations. Those who want to chip in some time volunteering during the food drive can get in touch with Cirillo at 250-309-0469, or Barron at 250-3782282.

Project Description: The projects consist of a maximum total of eight wind turbine generators, wind turbine foundations, transformers, gravel access roads, underground and/or overhead electrical cabling, and other ancillary works. The energy generated by the Project may be sold to BC Hydro under the Standing Offer Program (SOP), which allows for clean energy projects of a maximum size of 15 MW. The Development Plan will also support regulatory approvals to build and operate the proposed Projects. The Project location is shown in the map below. Documents for Public Inspection: Two Development Plans have been submitted in accordance with the guidelines set out in the Clean Energy Project Development Plan Information Requirements (Province of British Columbia, 2016). The documents are publicly available in their entirety, as well as summary versions, at the following website: mkince.ca/mountmabelwindproject. Albas named to shadow cabinet Cole Wagner THE MERRITT HERALD

Local MP Dan Albas shifted into a new role under Conservative leader Andrew Scheer this week, taking over the portfolio of small business critic in the Opposition leader’s shadow cabinet. Albas, who spent time as the deputy finance critic as well as interprovincial trade critic before his newest appointment, said the role is one that feels familiar to him based on his prior experience. “I came from small business. I ran one for 15 years, I know how difficult it is to keep your doors open, to make payroll, to work with other entrepreneurs, to network with the chamber of commerce, to make sure that local issues that could affect

your business are being looked into and also just on the taxation side,” said Albas, who owned a martial arts studio prior to entering public life. The parliamentarian takes over the portfolio at a time when Finance Minister Bill Morneau is mulling contentious changes to the tax code aimed at closing loopholes benefiting small business owners.

Morneau has proposed three changes: one aimed at reducing ‘income sprinkling,’ or the practice of spreading income to family members, thereby reducing a businesses’ tax rate. The second change would impact a small businesses’ ability to reclassify income into capital gains (which are taxed at a lower rate than general income).

The final change would see a crackdown on ‘passive investments’ by businesses. The proposals were the subject of a letter co-signed by 15 organizations representing small businesses in Canada, which urged the finance minister to table the changes and instead launch meaningful consultations with the business community. “These are not minor amendments, but are sweeping changes that will affect all sectors of Canada’s business community and we ask that you not move forward with these proposals,” stated an excerpt from the letter. Albas offered a similar critique of the government’s reforms, calling it the “largest change to our tax system in 30 years.” Morneau “gave a

pittance of a consultation period where most people — including his own officials — were away on holidays,” said Albas of the minister’s decision to announce the proposal in mid-July.

Cole Wagner THE MERRITT HERALD

The Railroad Adventures of Chen Sing, the story of a railroad worker who braved dangerous conditions during the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railroad, has already earned plaudits from critics — but Merrittonians in particular might find something special in the story. That’s because Chen Sing’s story is based on the real Chen Sing, a Chinese immigrant who moved to Canada to work on the railroad, and later settled down in the Nicola Valley to raise a large family. A work of historical fiction, the book is aimed at teaching young children and pre-teens about the dangerous and harrowing conditions that work crews — espe-

The Nicola Valley Community Arts Council invites you to our

SPECIAL GENERAL MEETING Wednesday, Sept. 20 - 7:00 pm City Hall Community Room, 2185 Voght Street

Everyone welcome! For more information contact: nicolavalleyartscouncil@gmail.com

The Railroad Adventures of Chen Sing was based on accounts of the real Chen Sing, who lived in Merritt after working on the Canadian Pacific Railway at the turn of the 19th century. The book was illustrated by Jessica Warner. Photo contributed

cially Chinese work crews — faced as they attempted to cut a railroad through the Rocky Mountains in the latter half of the 19th century. Author George Chiang based the novel on conversations he had with Ike Sing — one of Chen Sing’s eight children — nearly 20 years ago. Complete with full colour illustra-

tions, the short chapter book tells the story of Chen Sing’s encounters with wild animals, severe weather conditions and unforeseen obstacles that stand in the way of the railroad. The book was recognized with two Global Ebook Awards in August, winning gold in the children’s literature fiction category, as well as the juvenile fic-

tion category. While Merrittonians might recognize some references to the geography, most of the novel is concerned with Chen Sing’s life before he came to Merritt. However, Chiang is planning a sequel to the “Railroad Adventures of Chen Sing,” tentatively titled “The Pioneer Adventures of Chen Sing.” In the sequel, locals

will be able to recognize much more of the Nicola Valley, explained Chiang. This is the first novel published by Chiang, who has a background as a playwright, actor and composer. The ebook is available on Amazon, while hardcover and paperback versions are also available to order online.

The Merritt Centennials have released their schedule of games for the 2017-18 BCHL regular season. Once again, the Cents’ 58-game schedule features 29 home games and 29 away games, although two of those games will be played at the sixth-annual BCHL Showcase in Chilliwack. Merritt’s away game at this year’s Showcase is against the Langley Rivermen on Thurs., Sept. 21 at 1 p.m. Their home game at the Showcase is the following day, Sept. 22, versus the Prince George Spruce Kings at 10 a.m. The Centennials’ season kicks off officially on Friday, Sept. 8 when they host the defending BCHL playoffchampion Penticton Vees. That is just one-half of a high-powered home weekend, as the following night, it’s the U.S.-based Wenatchee Wild who roll into town. Saturday’s game against the Wild will be the first of six meetings between the two teams, as Wenatchee has moved to the BCHL’s Interior division. Merritt will also play its five other Interior Division rivals (Penticton, Salmon Arm, Trail, Vernon and West Kelowna) six times —three at home and three away. The Centennials play all other BCHL teams in the Coastal and Island Divisions twice — once at home and once away — except for Prince George and Langley who they play a total of three times. Of the 28 Cents’ games actually played at the Nicola Valley Memorial Arena, 19 are on either Friday or Saturday, four are on Sunday, three on Wednesday and two on Tuesday.

The Centennials have two four-game home stands — in late September and in the middle of February. They also have two fourgame road trips (or to be more accurate, four away games in a row) — in early November and in the first part of February. Merritt’s busiest months are January and February with an even dozen games each month, followed by October with 10, and September, November and December each with eight. There are several notable Cents’ home games that should be circled on the calendar:

As previously mentioned, this is one doozy of a doubleheader to kick off the new season. The Vees are always one of the best in the country, while the Wild led the league in points during the regular season last year. In addition to player introductions of this year’s Cents’ team, Friday’s game will honour former Centennial Eddy Beers (see below), while Saturday’s showdown with the Wild will be preceded by a rousing tailgate party in the parking lot, with music provided by the Bobby Garcia Band.

What better way to celebrate Parents’ Weekend and the annual Ice Breaker fundraiser than by bookending the celebrations with games against two of Merritt’s arch-rivals in the Interior Division.

Legend Eddy Beers to be honoured Friday night Ian Webster THE MERRITT HERALD

In the storied 45-year history of the Merritt Centennials hockey club, few players have had more of an impact on the community than hometown product Eddy Beers. Born in Zwaag, Holland in 1959 to a family of 10 children, Beers moved to Canada in 1960, and to Merritt in 1962. He grew up playing all his minor hockey in the Nicola Valley prior to joining the Cents in 1976 for two-and-a-half seasons. “Eddy was actually more interested in officiating hockey than playing the game,” said his brother Nic. “He saw that as his path to the NHL. He lined a BCJHL game at the age of 15.” It was reknowned Cents coach Joe Tennant who discovered Beers reffing and playing midget house hockey and convinced him to suit up for the Centennials. In his second year of Junior A (1977-78), Beers scored 55 goals and added 60 assists for 115 points in just 63 regular-season games.

Eddy Beers Photo contributed

His linemates that year were Kelly Ferner and Ken Stroud. The ‘77-78 season represents the most significant in Centennials’ history as the team experienced achievements yet to be matched.

The Cents rocketed to the top of the BCJHL standings, finishing with a record of 50-15-1 and 101 points. Merritt racked up an astonishing 489 goals that season, led by six different players with 90 points or more. In the post-season, Beers and the rest of the Centennials went on to win both the Mowat Cup provincial championship and the B.C.-Alberta Junior A title before losing to the Prince Albert Raiders in the Western Canadian finals. The Raiders would go on to win the Centennial Cup as national champions. The following season, 1978-79, Beers left Merritt at Christmas to play NCAA Division 1 hockey at the University of Denver. In a distinguished four-year career with the Pioneers under coach Ralph Backstrom, Beers totalled 168 points in 134 regular-season games, including 50 goals and 34 assists as captain of the team in his final season (tops in the entire NCAA). In 1981, Beers was a free-agent draft pick of the NHL’s Calgary Flames. He would go on to play five seasons for the Alberta club,

before being traded to the St. Louis Blues. A herniated disk in his back prematurely ended Beers’s hockey carrer in 1987. In 291 NHL games, he scored 101 goals and added 126 assists for 227 points, to go along with 303 minutes in penalties. Following his retirement from professional hockey, Beers went on to coach with three different teams in the BCJHL and later the BCHL — the Centennials (1987-89 and 1997-98), the Kelowna Spartans (1989-91), and the Chilliwack Chiefs (1991-92). He won the Joe Tennant trophy as BCHL Coach of the Year in the 1988-89 season with Merritt. Beers currently lives in Maple Ridge with his wife, Jodi (also from Merritt), and his two sons, Jacob and Matt. At Friday night’s game against the Penticton Vees, a special ceremony will be held at centre ice to honour the distinguished hockey career of Merritt’s own Eddy Beers. His name will be officially added to the Centennials’ Wall of Honour, where it will join the first inductee, Beers’s long-time friend Brian Barrett.

Cents pare their roster down to the 23-player limit Ian Webster THE MERRITT HERALD

The Merritt Centennials will go into their first regular-season game on Friday night, at home against the Penticton Vees, with a full roster of 23 players. The Cents made their final training camp cuts on Monday of this week, releasing defenseman Lucas Yovetich (Beverley Hills, Calif.) and forwards Blake Sidoni (Trail), Mitch Ledyard (Port Coquitlam) and Auston Ghiradelli (Santa Rosa, Calif.), and signing defenseman Kevan McBean (Calgary) to an affiliate player (AP) card. “There were some tough decisions,” said Centennials’ head coach

and GM Joe Martin. “Some of the players we let go can definitely play in this league.” The Cents’ roster (see right) includes two goalies, seven defensemen and 14 forwards. Nine of the 23 remaining players are veterans, 14 are rookies. Merritt’s line-up includes the maximum six 20-year-olds (born in 1997), another six 19-year-olds, nine 18-year-olds and two 17-year-olds. The Cents have four import players signed. They’re allowed a maximum of six. The non-Canadians are goaltender Jake Berger (Minnetonka, Minn.), defensemen Jake

Borgida (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Sam Miller (Milwaukee, Wisc.), and forward Christian Sabin (New Hudson, Mich.). Three other players on this year’s Cents’ roster have dual citizenship: McKullen Astill (Canadian-Norwegian), and both Jack Vincent and Matt Kopperud (Canadian-American). “I really like the group we have still with us,” said Martin, “and I especially like the group mentality. Everyone is very good to each other, and very helpful. “On the ice, I’m hoping that we’ll be a team that is just really hard to play against — across the line-up. Our veteran players want so badly

to have a really good season.” Looking ahead to this weekend, Martin said, “I’ve been telling our players, these are two good teams we’re facing. They’ve got really good rosters on paper, and they’ve both had good exhibition seasons. “Last year, we had the saying: ‘Work for everything, expect nothing.’ This year, we’ve changed that slightly to: ‘Work for everything, expect our best.’ “Last year, at our best, we were just a hair away (losing in game seven against the Vees in round two of the playoffs). We have a lot of those key players back. I like our team.”

LTD summer camp introduces youngsters to the diversity of dance

Ian Webster THE MERRITT HERALD

The second-to-last week of summer holidays was a busy one for many local dance students as the Love To Dance (LTD) Academy in Merritt held its annual dance camp from Aug. 21 to 25. Youngsters enrolled in the five-day camp had the opportunity to partake in a number of dance styles that they might not normally be exposed to in their regular classes during the rest of the year. Jake Evans, a guest instructor from Penticton, and his young son Damien introduced the LTD students to hip hop and urban street dancing. Evans began his dance career in his hometown of Halifax before moving out west. His performance appearances are numerous, as are the workshops he conducts regularly from coast to coast. Calgary’s Kaitlin Mathis (formerly from Kamloops) spent two days teaching lyrical and contemporary dance, as well as tap. Dance has taken Mathis all over the world. She is currently attending the University of Calgary, where she is studying kinesiology. On the final day of the camp, Merritt’s Selena Voigt taught the dancers ‘pound’ — a choreographed exercise to music using sticks. Every day of the camp, students also had the opportunity to work with instructor Allison Guichon on scenery and props for this year’s Christmas concert.

(Clockwise from top left) Love To Dance campers receive hip hop asnd street dance instruction from Penticton’s Jake Evans. Merritt’s Selena Voigt leads a ‘pound’ class with senior students. Kaitlin Mathis, formerly from Kamloops and now living in Calgary, shows her young charges how to tap dance. Mathis works with senior dancers on an interpretative number that will be featured in this year’s LTD Academy Christmas concert in late November. The concert theme is ‘Colours of the Heart’.
