HEREFORD SIXTH FORM COLLEGE ENCOURAGES AND SUPPORTS ACADEMICALLY GIFTED STUDENTS TO REALISE THEIR POTENTIAL TO WIN PLACES AT THE HIGHEST RANKED AND MOST COMPETITIVE UNIVERSITIES, REGARDLESS OF BACKGROUND.

» Annually, over 100 students gain 3 or more A* or A grades at A Level. » 45% of HE applicants gained places at Higher Tier (including Russell Group) universities, significantly above national averages. » In 2022, 20 students were offered places at Oxford and Cambridge (31% of those who applied, in comparison with national average of 19%). The total number of successful applicants has risen to 90 offers in four years. » Hereford Sixth Form College is recognised as one of the top 10 schools for entry to the Universities of

Oxford and Cambridge.

If you are considering applying to Russell Group universities, including Oxford or Cambridge, or indeed for other competitive courses (including medicine, dentistry and veterinary science), we provide a programme of dedicated advice and support through our Reach programme. This is a bespoke programme designed for our high achievers, of one hour a week, timetabled from January of Year One. These lessons include:

» Information on the application progress to give early, personalised support to our most able. » Subject enhancement - support with finding super curricular extension activities to demonstrate candidates’ potential for academic excellence in their chosen subjects. » Preparation for universities’ own Admissions Tests or Thinking Skills Assessments: an increasingly common requirement for Higher Tariff (Russell

Group) universities. » Intensive interview preparation and presentational skills training. » Using our close working relationships with admissions teams; admissions tutors deliver sessions on personal statement writing and interviews at the College. » Access to trips run by the top universities for state maintained schools. » Support from our increasingly successful alumni, who return to mentor current students.

In December 2021, 25 former students ran an afternoon workshop on academic interviews, from

Architecture and Computer Science, to PPE and

Veterinary Medicine. » Specialist careers support from Reach staff when filling out UCAS. » Tutoring for the STEP tests for Mathematics. » Access officers from Oriel College, University of Oxford and Christ’s College, University of

Cambridge visit Hereford Sixth Form College as well as offering visits. Trips are often arranged to their open events. » Access to a range of international opportunities including Sutton Trust US and UK, Villiers Park,

UNIQ, CanBridge, summer schools, etc. Privileged access to universities ‘widening participation’ initiatives available only to the maintained sector.

THE COLLEGE HAS SUPPORTED ME SINCE I FIRST ARRIVED, WITH TALKS RELATED TO BOTH MY CHOSEN SUBJECTS AND THE CAMBRIDGE APPLICATION PROCESS. THERE WAS ALWAYS THE OPPORTUNITY TO TALK TO AN ADVISOR WHEN I NEEDED TO, AND ANY QUESTIONS OR WORRIES I HAD COULD BE EASILY SOLVED. HEREFORD SIXTH FORM COLLEGE HAS BEEN INVALUABLE IN GAINING MY PLACE.
