President’s Foreword Welcome to the 123rd Annual Exhibition of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, our yearly celebration of this wonderfully versatile medium that has been a major vehicle for recording the world around us and expressing the human condition since the 15th century. It’s a huge pleasure and responsibility to sit with my colleagues selecting work for this stunning showcase of talent. We aim to select work that exhibits excellence in the widest spectrum of style and technique and the Institute is determined to maintain and raise the standards of work on show. The feeling is that this year we have again exceeded previous years in this regard. This year we are delighted to welcome Sir William McAlpine, our guest opener, a prolific collector and supporter of artists, a preservationist and former director of the pre-eminent Construction and Civil Engineering Company. Although the artistic life is fraught with difficulty, the legacy left by generations is reflected greatly by the art created in a given period and the support and patronage received is crucial. In our show you have an opportunity to purchase works by up and coming artists through to many of our best known names. We do hope you enjoy the results of our labours and would like to thank all who have helped make this event possible and such a pleasure on so many levels. Prizes & Awards THE STANLEY GRIMM PRIZE Two awards totalling £700, which are awarded annually in memory of Stanley Grimm ROI RP (1891-1966), to the painters whose work receive the most votes from visitors to the exhibition. The Prize is sponsored by Mrs Martin Stanley, granddaughter of Stanley. Artists who have won the prize within the previous five years are not eligible. THE ALAN GOURLEY MEMORIAL AWARD In memory of Past President Alan Gourley, an annual prize of £1,000 is awarded for a painting of outstanding merit. WINSOR & NEWTON NON-MEMBER AWARDS An award of £150 worth of art materials for the painting in the Exhibition by a non-member judged to be outstanding, and an award of £150 worth of art materials for the painting judged to be the best work produced by a non-member during the Art Event Evening, will also be presented. THE DAS AWARD As part of their generous and imaginative support of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, the DAS Group is presenting a ‘Bristol Blue Glass Bowl’ and a cheque of £500 for a work of distinction. THE DARTINGTON CRYSTAL CHALICE Introduced in 1995, the Dartington Crystal Chalice is presented annually to a member of the Institute in recognition of outstanding service and contribution.
