Welcome from the President Welcome to the 115th Annual Exhibition of the Pastel Society UK sponsored by Caran d’Ache. It is a great honour to have as our ‘Opener’ and ‘Invited Artist’, Professor Ken Howard OBE RA. His personal statement ‘Revelation, Communication and Celebration’ should be the pass-word for us all. This statement (which can be read in full on page 6) encompasses everything we, as artists, should strive for. More than that it is something we should keep tucked near to our hearts always, for without it we are technicians without souls. I would like to thank Professor Ken Howard on behalf of the Pastel Society UK for sharing his work with us and for opening the exhibition. I hope he will enjoy viewing our show. The Pastel Society UK is a society in celebration of all dry media and the work you will view on the walls truly reflects this diversity. Diversity is a very apt description of this exhibition, diverse in medium, diverse in approach and diverse in subject matter. This is an exhibition full of surprises. You will never come to a Pastel Society exhibition and see a ‘type-cast’ display of pastel paintings. The Pastel Society will show you how to stretch the use of dry media to its limits. Be prepared to be amazed. But of course we would be unable to break any boundaries without the work of the product manufacturers who, not only provide us with quality products, but are also prepared to give Prizes and Awards. I would like to thank them and all the Award Givers on behalf of the Pastel Society UK for their support and generosity. We have a wonderful number of Awards this year and we value these greatly. A very special thanks goes to Caran d’Ache who are sponsoring us again this year. Their support is invaluable to the Pastel Society and we truly hope that this relationship can continue well into the future. Caran d’Ache will be celebrating their Centenary Year in 2015 and the Pastel Society look forward to helping them make this a very special year. Bess Avery is our featured artist in this year’s catalogue and Bess has written a few words about her work and working process. Her image ‘Garden’ is shown on the front cover of the catalogue. We are a small society but we have an enthusiastic Council and we continuously strive to improve communication and a sense of belonging amongst all of our Members. My thanks go to all Members of the Society for their support, sense of humour and sound advice. This would not be complete without a thank you to the FBA staff. The support the Society has from all members of staff at the Mall Galleries is second to none. We will do our best as a Society to give our support in return. I hope you will enjoy our exhibition and find a painting that needs you. When you find one, do not hesitate, please purchase it and give it a good home. Cheryl Culver, President of the Pastel Society

Invited Artist: Professor Ken Howard OBE RA He was elected a member of the New English Art Club in 1962, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in 1966, the Royal West of England Academy 1981, Honorary Member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1988, Royal Academician in 1991 and President of the New English Art Club in 1998. Revelation, Communication and Celebration: A personal statement by Ken Howard ‘For me painting is about three things. It is about revelation, communication and celebration. By revelation I mean giving people a way of seeing, revealing the world around them in a way they have never seen before, opening their eyes. The first time I became conscious of this was as a young man. I was painting a railway siding in North London. A railway worker stopped to watch me paint and after some time said, ‘Young man, I have walked across this place for many years and this morning for the first time I see that it is beautiful.’ That was a revelation for me. By communication I mean revealing the world with a personal language, speaking directly in an instantly recognisable style. The artist spends his life refining that language in order to express his personal world more clearly and directly. For me drawing is the basis of all visual language, for the art of drawing is a way of seeing and celebrating the world.

Ken Howard Artist and Model, Mousehole, Oil Ken Howard studied at Hornsey School of Art from 1949 to 1953. He then did his National Service with the Royal Marines before returning to study at the Royal College of Art from 1955 to 1958. He went on to win a British Council Scholarship to Florence from 1958 to 1959.

8

My last criterion, celebration, is perhaps more difficult to explain. We all suffer in our lives, we lose loved ones, we suffer illnesses and the stresses and strains of normal life. But I want art to raise me above that, when I look at painting I want it to be elevating, I want it to celebrate life whether it be human dignity expressed by Velásquez or Cézanne, or the wonders of nature expressed by Corot or Monet. For me my main inspiration is light and it is through light that I want to celebrate my world‘.

Pastel Society UK 2014

Endless Variety by Bess Avery PS Most of my work has been based on collections of natural forms from walks and trips, whether from woods or meadows, coast or gardens. Each collection reminds me of the place, environment, and season. They are chosen by whatever I find attracts me, colour, texture or whatever else. When I bring them back to my studio I work on in-depth drawings of the objects. Later I produce drawings using only the structure and characteristics of the object. My main interest recently has been plant life and flowers; I have always enjoyed the work by botanical artists. The variety is endless, and easy to obtain, whether bought or collected. Also my own garden and other peoples’ gardens have inspired my work.

Bess Avery PS Fruit and Flowers I began my study of fine art as a mature student after my family had grown up. Although fine art was a subject I had always wanted to pursue, I began my education later in life. Taking the opportunity to study, I attended Middlesex University and East London University, and later became a Member of the Pastel Society.

Pastel has been a very good medium for my work. When I first worked with pastel I found it quite challenging, but after experimenting, I soon found a way of using pastel which suited my approach and worked well with the medium. I like the immediacy of pastel and the colour range. I also think it is important to find a support that suits your technique.

Although I have worked with most subjects my main interest has been landscape and natural forms.
