WELCOME

ISE 2018

WELCOME TO , THE OFFICIAL MAGAZINE OF ISE 2018 Mike Blackman, Managing Director, Integrated Systems Events

[E]

very year, in those post-show weeks and months, we sit down as a team and analyse where ISE is - what went well and what we can improve on. ISE 2017 gave us new targets, not only in terms of the numbers, but with respect to how we further develop a quality proposition for everyone involved. We’ve kept that thought at the forefront of our minds as we’ve worked towards making ISE 2018 the best show yet. Magazine opens a window onto the show and allows us, the organisers, an opportunity to shine a light on how the market is shaping up, as we look ahead to what is now the largest AV and systems integration show in the world. This edition is full of useful information that we hope will make your visit to Amsterdam in February as enjoyable and as productive as possible. ISE is all about collaboration and connections. These pillars are at the heart of everything - from the organisational effort that goes into the show, to the business relationships that are formed and developed there. This year, we are taking collaboration in a new direction by joining forces with the Amsterdam Light Festival and the RAI Amsterdam to present the final heats of the World Masters of Projection Mapping during ISE. It will be a truly awe-inspiring spectacle that, I believe, will resonate with both visitors and exhibitors. Make sure you’re around for that on the evening of Thursday 8 February. Another exciting new initiative for 2018 is the inaugural XR Summit ISE; a one-day conference that will explore the latest in virtual, augmented, mixed reality and multi-view business strategies, technologies and solutions. I believe these technologies will really impact the AV industry in the coming years, which is why it’s important that we tackle this subject matter in an engaging and comprehensive manner. Though the dates of ISE 2018 are 6-9 February, most of you will know that the Monday before the show starts sees a full day of conferences. Namely, the Smart Building Conference (SBC), AudioForum and, new for this year from AVIXA, TIDE, which is an exploration of the creative forces shaping the AV industry. These are market-defining meetings involving thought leaders and innovators. We’re delighted that revered architect, Carlo Ratti, will take part in SBC before delivering the ISE 2018 Opening Address, capping a thoughtprovoking day, as we look ahead to four days of ISE. We’re expecting more than 75,000 attendees to our biggest ever show floor, and over 1,200 companies in 15 halls. The floor boasts seven different technology zones: Audio & Live Events Technology, Digital Signage & DOOH, Education Technology, Residential Solutions, Smart Building, Unified Communications and XR Technology. The new Hall 15, located at the front of the RAI, has been added to help meet the demand for exhibition space.

Leading industry associations, AVIXA and CEDIA, will build on their impressive ISE 2017 education programmes. Their offerings will vary from short 20-minute sessions to full-day workshops, masterclasses and conferences. Add to that the Show Floor Theatres - the AVIXA Commercial Solutions Theatre sponsored by Crestron, CEDIA Smart Building Solutions Theatre sponsored by KNX and AVIXA Unified Communications Solutions Theatre sponsored by Crestron - and there really is something to suit everybody’s professional development needs. Look out for special events and initiatives throughout the week, including Tech Tours, the Sports Venue and Fan Engagement Summit, Stand Design Awards, Digital Signage Summit ISE, InAVation Awards and lots more. ISE 2018 is shaping up to be the most exciting show yet. I hope RISE helps with your preparations and stirs your anticipation at the same time. We look forward to welcoming you to Amsterdam in February.

HOP ON YOUR BIKE

There are over 800,000 bicycles in Amsterdam. That’s more bikes than people! Cycling in Amsterdam is a way of life, made easier by the city’s sophisticated network of cycle routes and the flat landscape. Amsterdam regularly comes out at the top of the world’s most cycle-friendly cities, and there’s no finer way to explore the city’s streets, canals and attractions than by pedal power.

TRY HERRING FROM A HERRING CART

Raw herring may sound a little scary to the uninitiated, but every visitor to Amsterdam should give it a go. You’ll spot haringhandels (herring carts) serving up this Dutch specialty all over the city - ask for a ‘broodje haring’ to get the fish served in a small sandwich with pickles and onions.

There are eight remaining windmills in Amsterdam. The easiest to visit is de Gooyer in the Oostelijke Eilanden (Eastern Islands) neighbourhood. This is no ordinary windmill; under the sails of this striking landmark you’ll find Brouwerij ‘t IJ - an award-winning artisan microbrewery, with a large outdoor drinking terrace, complete with 30-minute guided tasting tours. The brewery produces a range of organic standard and seasonal ales that you’ll find in many Amsterdam bars, though nothing tastes quite as good as beer brewed on the premises.

THE SHOW

ISE 2018

EXPLORING THE SHOW With its extensive seminar programme, a new technology zone to explore and the introduction of a brand new Hall 15, there has never been more to discover at ISE - and with so much on offer, it’s even more important to plan your trip in advance.

Getting to the RAI Amsterdam

Making your way to the RAI Amsterdam couldn’t be easier. Already well connected by the city’s tram, train and metro networks, a fleet of dedicated ISE shuttle buses are also available on each day of the show. These link the Amsterdam RAI with over 25 hotels across the city, as well as making morning pick-ups and evening drop-offs at Schiphol Airport. The full shuttle bus timetable can be viewed on the ISE website, where you’ll also find details on how to use the city’s cost-effective public transport links. With taxis in high demand during the show, we recommend sidestepping the queues by opting for an alternative - saving you time and money. Onsite parking is available to those travelling by car - including free parking in the RAI Parking on Friday 9 February (limited capacity).

Arrival and Registration

On arrival at the RAI Amsterdam, head to one of the four entrances (B, C, F or L) where a team of friendly staff will help with a swift entry into the show. If you have pre-registered, don’t forget to bring your badge so that you can be scanned straight in. For those who still need to collect their badge, or have not already registered pre-arrival, this can be done at entrances B, C and F, where secure cloakrooms are also available for the storage of coats (€2 per day) and luggage (€3 per day). On your way in, pick up a complementary visitor’s bag, Official Show Guide and foldout floor plan to help you locate specific exhibitors and carry away the information you need. A copy of the floor plan can also be found on page 64 of this magazine. If you still need help orientating yourself once inside the show, speak to a member of staff at any nearby Information Point for guidance, download the ISE Mobile App, or use one of the many interactive way-finding kiosks located across the halls to pinpoint your location and plan a route to any exhibitor, seminar or meeting room in the RAI.

Halls and Zones

Regular visitors to ISE will immediately spot the biggest change to this year’s show: Hall 15, a new pavilion filling the plaza at the front of the RAI, providing an extra 4,000 sqm of space in which to host more than 176 additional exhibitors.

THE SHOW

As in previous years, the show will include a number of themed ‘technology zones’, drawing together exhibitors with a strong focus in a specific area. Following the popularity of last year’s immersive technology exhibits, this year sees the introduction of a dedicated XR Technology zone, taking the total number of themed zones to seven: ●● Audio & Live Events Technology ●● Digital Signage & DOOH ●● Education Technology ●● Residential Solutions ●● Smart Building ●● Unified Communications ●● XR Technology In addition to creating these zones, the ISE 2018 team has put

Integrated Systems Europe 2018

together six special Route Planners covering Audio, Building Automation, Communication Collaboration, Digital Signage, Event Technology, and XR Technology. These handy guides provide an edited list of all relevant exhibitors alongside a map highlighting the location of each.

Training and Development

Alongside the free talks on offer in the three Show Floor Theatres, visitors can enrol on a selection of professional development seminars provided by AVIXA and CEDIA. Sessions often prove very popular, so advanced booking is recommended - not least so you can take advantage of the Early

Bird Discount (available until 8 January). For more information on all training and educational sessions at ISE 2018, download the Professional Development Guide from the ISE website or pick up a copy at the show. You can also find more information in the AVIXA and CEDIA Educational Schedule included in this copy of RISE.

Other Essentials

When the hunger hits, you’ll find a diverse range of dining options available throughout the RAI Amsterdam, from quick bites for those on-the-go, to more formal restaurant dining. There will be a brand new food court and

I

t is my belief that we have a real opportunity in the AV industry to look at true user needs alongside more general technology trends. This is becoming more and more important as technology becomes more and more integrated with building systems. The AV industry must do more to sell the business benefits of what we do in order to ensure customers allocate realistic budgets to AV compared to interior design, furniture, art, lighting and the other budget items when designing rooms and buildings. I was delighted when I heard about the TIDE conference last year as it focused on broader content, value and interaction issues in order to encourage attendees to zoom out and think bigger picture. The conference didn’t disappoint and was very well put together in all respects – content, supporting technology, flow of the day, breaks and food and drinks. As the thought leadership, intentions and execution of TIDE closely align with those of Biamp we are very happy to sponsor the conference and we look forward to seeing it grow and, more importantly, we look forward to seeing the impact of the conference on our industry. It is the most encouraging initiative that we have seen within the industry in some time. TIDE takes place on Monday 5 February at 11:00-17:30 in the Hotel Okura Amsterdam - Ferdinand Bolstraat 333, 1072 LH Amsterdam. Read more about TIDE on p29

STAMPEDE DRONE ARENA GETS BIGGER AND BETTER

T

he pro AV industry’s largest drone showcase is set to return to ISE 2018 as Stampede, the global leader in value added distribution, brings a larger and even more broadly focused Drone Arena to ISE 2018. According to Stampede President and COO, Kevin Kelly, the 2018 Drone Arena will feature more models from more manufacturers demonstrating applications across a broad range of vertical markets. What’s more, Stampede will again team up with the Unmanned Vehicle University to provide a full schedule of application-specific presentations, training sessions, as well as small group and one-on-one information sessions. The separate Unmanned Vehicle University classes will cover in-depth discussions of various commercial applications and how drones are being used currently – such as for public safety, infrastructure inspection, survey/ mapping and aerial cinematography. Then there’s the Stampede Fly Cage - a major attraction for ISE attendees. Throughout each day, the Stampede Fly Cage will host short presentations by specific drone-related manufacturers, who will discuss in more detail how their specific models can be used to support commercial applications. “The Stampede Drone Arena is an event unto itself within the umbrella of ISE,” emphasised Kelly. “It offers a complete programme of product and information that is useful for both integrators and end-user customers. Our

goal is to empower integrators to leave the 2018 Drone Arena ready to add drones to their 2018 business strategy.” Visitors to the Stampede Drone Arena will also have a chance to win a drone. In fact, one drone will be given away each day of the show. Attendees can simply drop their business card into the raffle drum - they need to be present during the prize draw to win. The Drone Arena will be in Hall 14, Stand 14-A100

RATTI’S OPENING ADDRESS TO EXPLORE SENSEABLE CITY REVOLUTION

FROM SMART OFFICES TO SMART BUILDINGS TO SMART CITIES

T

he ISE 2018 Opening Address, taking place on the day before ISE opens, is to be given by Carlo Ratti, the leading architect, engineer, inventor, educator and professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Ratti’s speech is entitled, Senseable Cities. In it he will explore how the increasing deployment of sensors and Credit Daniele Ratti hand-held electronics in recent years is allowing a new Carlo Ratti approach to the study of the built environment. According to Ratti, the way we describe and understand cities is being radically transformed, alongside the tools we use to design them and impact on their physical structure. Ratti will address these issues from a critical point of view through case study projects by the Senseable City Laboratory, a research initiative at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the design office Carlo Ratti Associati. Ratti commented: “Social and technological developments in the evolution of smart cities and smart buildings are quickly shaping how we must plan to work and live in the future. I look forward to sharing my thoughts and experiences with the ISE audience.” Ratti was named one of the ‘50 most influential designers in America’ by Fast Company and highlighted in Wired Magazine’s ‘Smart List: 50 people who will change the world.’ Ratti’s speech will follow shortly after the conclusion of the Smart Building Conference during which Ratti will participate in the one-day conference’s closing roundtable discussion. At MIT, Ratti directs the Senseable City Lab, a research group that explores how new technologies are changing the way we understand, design and ultimately live in cities. He is also a founding partner of the international design and innovation office Carlo Ratti Associati (CRA). The ISE 2018 Opening Address will take place at 18.00 on Monday 5 February in the Forum. Carlo Ratti’s Opening Address takes place on Monday 5 February at 18:00 in the Forum. It will be followed by the ISE Opening Reception in the Forum Lounge.

OPENING RECEPTION The official ISE 2018 Opening Reception will be held on 5 February, the day before ISE begins. It will follow on from the ISE 2018 Opening Address from Carlo Ratti, which takes place in the Forum. The Opening Reception is situated directly outside the Forum in the Forum Lounge. All attendees and exhibitors are welcome to attend from 19:00 to enjoy complimentary food and drinks. The informal reception provides an excellent opportunity for networking, as we look forward to the four show days ahead.

13

fter last year’s significant increase in delegates, Smart Building Conference (SBC) at ISE 2018 is the must-attend summit for professionals working in smart homes, smart offices, smart buildings and smart cities. Organised by Integrated Systems Events, SBC 2018 will take place on 5 February in the Forum and E102, the day before ISE 2018 opens its doors. SBC is a full-day event that draws more than 400 executives to explore the latest technologies, business strategies, market research and workflow case studies, and to hear presentations from the world’s leading smart building experts and thought leaders. This year’s theme is From Smart Building to Smart City. Conference Chairman Bob Snyder explained: “As more layers of digital networks blanket urban space, new approaches to commercial and residential built environments are emerging.” The theme will be explored by more than 30 of the world’s leading experts across SBC’s twin tracks. Not bound by the methodologies of a single field, smart building is characterised by an omni-disciplinary approach. SBC brings together experts from IT, AV, building, architecture, facilities management and others. The twin tracks (Residential and Commercial) will offer dual insight to help executives understand that smart building is neither a product nor a standalone technology, but an end-to-end solution that will change our homes, offices, buildings and cities forever. One important topic is smart workplace technology, often associated with the biggest commercial buildings, housing the most high-profile organisations – in buildings like The Edge in Amsterdam. While many managers of small to medium-sized building developments (commercial or MDUs) might discount smart technology, assuming they don’t have the capital or scale to achieve a good return on investment, the reality is quite different. Smart workplace tech may be the best way for smaller commercial buildings and multiple-home-developments to survive and even thrive. Other topics include the transformation of the architectural space into interfaces with the digital world, all you need to know about building automation systems, the battle for retrofit, the new smarter campus, how hackers connect with smart buildings, the opportunity in smart assisted living solutions, wireless connectivity at the edge in the IoT era and today’s possibilities with li-fi. SBC 2018 will include a closing industry panel, entitled From Smart Buildings to Even Smarter Buildings, which will feature a special guest and Carlo Ratti, who will also deliver the ISE 2018 Opening Address. Smart Building Conference takes place on Monday 5 February at 08:30–17:45 in the Forum and E102

JOIN THE VERY BEST OF THE GLOBAL AV INDUSTRY

T

he InAVation Awards returns to Amsterdam’s iconic Gashouder venue on Tuesday 6 February. Now in its 12th year, this event continues to grow from strength to strength, and will once again deliver the recognition that the very best of the global AV industry deserves at this unique and enjoyable event, which runs alongside the biggest AV exhibition in the world. With the much-coveted Project Awards contested by the world’s top integrators and consultants, a ticket to the event provides an all-inclusive evening, so there are no additional costs on the night. After an informal drinks reception, guests will take their seats under the iron dome of the converted industrial building for a four-course gala dinner, during which winners across all Technology and Project categories will be announced. The party can continue after the meal with an open bar and plenty of opportunity to celebrate and enjoy time with colleagues and industry peers. The InAVation Awards is the culmination of a programme that sees manufacturers, integrators, distributors and consultants compete to pick up one of the highly regarded trophies. Project awards highlight the most interesting globally situated AV installations across a range of sectors. Last year’s winners included the United Nations La salle de Emirates, The Maersk Building at Copenhagen University and Integrated Audio Visual (India), which took home the inaugural award for using AVIXA standards. The 2018 Technology awards finalists impressed the judging panel who were less interested in the specifications of a particular technology,

instead placing more emphasis on the benefits that technology brings to designers, integrators, managers and users of AV systems. Categories include Collaboration and Conferencing, Digital Signage, as well as Small and Large Group Presentation. Each Technology category is voted for online and promoted by the readers of various international and national media partners. ARCHITECTS AND DESIGNPROFESSIONALS

C

EDIA understands the importance of architects, specifiers, and other design professionals for the home technology industry, and strives to foster collaborative relationships between members and industry partners. Today’s demand for smart home installation combines specialist design with a suitable infrastructure of cabling and technology. That’s why CEDIA is dedicated to educating design professionals about what CEDIA members can do. Through CEDIA’s CPD training course, Designing Integrated Future-Ready Homes, members are equipped to communicate the benefits of professionally installed home technologies to the design and build professional audience. Available in English, Italian, Polish, Russian, and Spanish, this CPD welcomes more than 700 design professionals onto the course every year. The Smart Home Cabling Requirements for the Modern Home CPD, accredited by the SAIA (South African Institute of Architects) and RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects), has also proved to be a successful way to

explain the necessary wiring infrastructure needed for a connected, modern home. Experts will be on hand at ISE to advise integrators on promoting home technology to design professionals.

Expanding the workforce

AWARDS

T

The success of the home technology industry relies on the skills and qualifications of the workforce entering the industry. CEDIA is raising awareness of career opportunities among jobseekers as well as developing resources to help them prepare for their future. Since CEDIA began the development of a Smart Home Technician Apprenticeship standard 12 months ago, significant progress has been made to encourage young professionals to develop a career within the home technology industry. This standard will put more control in the hands of employers. It will ensure that apprentices are qualifying with the right skills and knowledge, and address skills shortages facing industry, as well as attracting new prospective professionals. To increase the credibility of its training, and make this career path more attractive, CEDIA now has its Smart Home Technician and Smart Home Designer tracks accredited by City & Guilds, a renowned awarding body. City & Guilds evaluates externally accredited training against a comprehensive benchmark that has been developed from over 130 years of experience in managing quality systems and training courses. New for this year, CEDIA developed a partnership with retra, the association for independent electrical retailers, to offer members access to a number of smart home training courses. This collaboration will allow electrical retailers to develop the necessary skills and expertise to enable them to expand their business into the home technology market.

he 2017 CEDIA Awards proved to be the most successful yet. With entries from 18 countries around the world, technology integrators, manufacturers, and distributors from the Asia Pacific, Americas, and EMEA regions were all competing for the top prizes. Celebrating excellence in home technology design, installation and integration, the CEDIA Awards recognise the industry’s top products and projects. In the EMEA region, 430 industry professionals were part of the magic in 2017, enjoying an evening of networking, fine dining, and toasting to the award winners. To find out more about the 2018 awards programme, and what is needed to compete for the industry’s top awards, visit CEDIA at ISE 2018 at booth 1-E20, at the entrance of Hall 1.

CEDIA GROWTH

C

EDIA continues to grow as a strong and global association, now representing over 3,700 member companies, with 722 new companies this year, from 78 countries worldwide. In the EMEA region, over 200 new CEDIA members have joined in 2017, representing a 6% increase overall. This year has seen members join from no fewer than seven new countries. There will be even more international training taking place in 2018, beginning with ISE in February. CEDIA has developed an extensive training programme built on the success of last year. CEDIA TECH COUNCIL

TECH TRENDS FOR THE HOME Peter Aylett, Technical Director at integration firm Archimedia and a member of the CEDIA Technology Council, casts an eye over the future tech trends that visitors should look out for at ISE 2018.

[I]

n the CEDIA Technology Council’s view, one core area of interest is sensors everywhere. What does that mean and how will that impact the home integration business? Well, it’s all about the increasing number of sensors, both on our person and all around us, in the built environment. Thanks to the Internet of Things (IoT), the modern home is seeing an exponential increase - from video sensing and the new science of audio analytics, to sensors embedded in fabric that measure our bio data, to simple sensors that monitor temperature, water leaks, and occupancy. This breadth of sensing devices will lead to a world where, ultimately, the best user interface will be no user interface. Predictive algorithms and machine learning are enabling this trend. Technology can predict our next move before we’ve even stopped to think about it. Based on sensors’ data capture, predictive analytics are analysing our spending patterns and likes and dislikes, as well as suggesting our next ‘friend’ on Facebook. In the smart home, this will evolve from mere automation to proactive assistance. Another important category to look for at ISE is lighting control, which is already a big driver and will only continue to grow in importance for our industry. From sleep habits and productivity to mental functions and general wellbeing, lighting is crucial to human development, so it’s no surprise that lighting is becoming more than just a flick of a switch. Bio-adaptive lighting combines natural and artificial light to meet the needs of our body’s circadian rhythm. An example is changing the colour temperature of artificial light sources to ease you into sleep, or gently wake you in the morning, or a light source that brightens across a certain portion of the visible spectrum

to assist eyesight. Moving beyond simple white bulbs, these systems are bound to mature and become largely standard in every home. Speaking of lightbulbs; connected luminaires will communicate with other devices and people in a building or city. With on-board electronics that allow them to integrate with data networks, a luminaire becomes much more than a light source, with technologies such as Li-Fi, serving as a means for collecting and distributing data and services. Data development will continue to drive innovation at a pace never seen before. The 5G network forms part of this expansion, as mobile high bandwidth connections make everything virtualised or stored in the cloud. It is conceivable that for many applications, 5G could replace a fixed internet connection with IPv6 driving the possible end of the LAN. You will soon be able to download movies in seconds, and interconnect different devices in the home, office, and on the move. This will lead to a seamless technology experience wherever

you are as your data and operating system moves with you. This moves us to interoperability - the ability of technology to communicate seamlessly without the programming inherent in conventional systems integration. There are numerous devices from multiple suppliers, using different technologies to communicate, but only within their own ecosystem. Imagine a world where all these devices on different ecosystems connect together, reliably. The conversation continues around whether universal standards will ever happen, but for the near future, there is a massive opportunity for technology integrators to make sense of the currently confusing interoperability landscape for clients. Voice control is becoming the ‘must have’ user interface, ultimately, changing the way we interact with our environment for good. With the likes of Amazon Alexa and Google Home making headway, devices such as these are leading artificial intelligence (AI) into the [

BUILD EXCELLENCE WITH CEDIA EDUCATION CEDIA brings an extensive four-day training programme to ISE 2018, focused on delivering education excellence for home technology professionals. [ real world with an increasing number of integrations and partnerships. Using the power of cloud-based computing, voice allows you to interact in a way previously not possible. There’s no doubt that 2017 was the year where voice recognition accuracy reached human parity, and 2018 will see further developments. To complement voice control, gesture recognition is an area to watch. Smart technology will interpret your movements, along with voice commands, so if you were to gesture towards a light and say, “turn that off”, hey presto, sensors will do the job for you. Intelligent glass will have the capacity to be used as a control interface, entertainment platform, art display, environmental control, and communications screen. In terms of home entertainment, flexible and movable surfaces for TV and video will soon appear in the home. With the ability to adjust its physical shape to the aspect ratio of whatever you’re watching, screens, countertop, walls, and even bathroom tiles will become interactive surfaces. Full-wall video will turn any wall into an immersive and interactive experience. Think of a wall-sized iPhone with all your favourite apps built in. These large-scale displays will change the face of architecture and interior design forever, finally bringing the famous architect Le Corbusier’s vision of a house as ‘a machine for living in’ to life. Virtual Reality (VR) is another exciting opportunity. As it matures and content is natively developed for a VR platform, it will be integrated into the home. VR taps into education, health consulting, business, and multi-player gaming; and Audioscapes and projection mapping allow for mixed reality spaces. These mixed reality rooms will begin to compete with dedicated home cinemas, as clients seek entirely immersive, 360-degree experiences where you can not only hear and see your favourite movie, but engage all your senses at the same time. We’re also likely to see a rise in augmented reality as digital information overlays aspects of our real-life experiences. Human-centered design and new assistive technologies will allow for ageing in place and bring individuals with physical or cognitive disabilities the opportunity for much greater independence at home. These technologies will enable individuals to perform tasks that they were previously unable to accomplish, or even help to manage someone with Alzheimer’s or dementia by limiting access to anything that could be dangerous. With an increasingly ageing population, we expect to see demand grow in the future to open one of the biggest opportunities the industry has ever had. In this future world, the home technology integrator is more valuable than ever for their knowledge, advice, and integration skills. Be prepared. Make sure you pay a visit to ISE 2018 and get to grips with where technology, and the future, is headed.

“C

EDIA Education at ISE 2018 will be rich in content for integrators, whatever their level within the industry,” said Aneta Armova-Levin, CEDIA’s Education Manager. “Our expert presenters will cover a varied range of business and technology topics in over 40 sessions at the event. Visitors can buy an All Access Pass that gives them the opportunity to attend as many sessions from the programme as they like for just €250 (excludes full-day training sessions and certification exams), and a Super Pass that will secure free entry to multiple AVIXA training sessions too. We will also offer the opportunity for integrators to sit for a CEDIA Certification exam, demonstrating how they excel within the profession. “It’s a packed CEDIA programme - that tells you ISE 2018 is the place to learn. Many classes sold out very quickly in 2017, so make sure you book your chosen courses early to avoid any disappointment in 2018.” Technology highlights in the CEDIA education programme include full-day Advanced Home Cinema Design and Rack-Building workshops, as well as a two-part Acoustics Treatment training series. Additionally, areas such as power management, power conditioning, local generation and storage, and POE will be covered. Other not-to-be-missed session topics include using VR for smart home designs, high resolution audio, lighting control, video displays, assisted living, interoperability, and much, much more. Business owners can benefit from insights provided by Leslie Shiner, the renowned US author, speaker, and trainer. Leslie’s courses will help shed light on how to grow and maximise profitability for your integration company with sessions entitled: Time Is Money; 25 Ways to Increase Profit; A Project Manager’s Guide to the Financial Stuff, and Using a Dashboard to Steer Your Company on the Right Path. CEDIA Certification will be a major focus for the association throughout 2018. By taking CEDIA’s highly respected Electronic Systems Technician (ESC-T), Designer (ESC-D), or Networking Specialist (ESC-N) Certifications, members can establish their expertise and commitment to best practice. ASSOCIATION OVERVIEW

TAKING AV FORWARD By David Labuskes, CTS, CAE, RCDD, Chief Executive Officer of AVIXA

[W]

hen we made the transition from InfoComm to AVIXA, the Audiovisual and Integrated Experience Association, we knew we had thousands upon thousands of people in the AV industry to thank for this progression. Our new direction reflects the industry’s remarkable success and evolution over the past few years, as well as where we expect it to take us over the next 50. Technology has come a long way - fast. Innovative AV integrators have turned technology into solutions, which create experiences that lead to positive outcomes - from collaboration, to communication, to entertainment - for customers all across the world. In becoming AVIXA, we have kept the name of our successful InfoComm tradeshows the same. We achieved record attendance at InfoComm Orlando Florida in June, as well as a string of best-ever shows from China to Mexico. AVIXA is looking forward to InfoComm 2018 in Las Vegas, Nevada, with hopes for another high attendance year. AVIXA is also proud to be co-owners with CEDIA of the annual ISE (Integrated Systems Europe) shows. We plough all the resources raised from these shows right back into programmes that benefit our industry. This is a different AV industry than it was in 2005, when we shed the International Communications Industries Association (ICIA) name. A trade organisation that represents the AV industry needs to reflect that change. We are committed to advancing the audiovisual industry, creating a hub of community and collaboration, and acting as a catalyst for market growth around the world. The name AVIXA reflects three important characteristics of the association, its members and the industry that we represent. First, AV is who we are. Despite all the talk about convergence, audio and video are the proud building blocks of everything this industry is about. It was true in 1939 when we were founded, and it’s still true today. Second, integrated experiences - IX - are what we create. Experiences require not just technology, but also the right content and space, integrated together to achieve a desired outcome, whether that outcome is rich communication, a deep understanding or just plain wonder - the ‘wow’ that attracted so many of us to this industry. Finally, that last A in AVIXA underscores our unique role as an association, representing a thriving industry of professionals who operate in a dynamic, growing marketplace. We operate to benefit both the companies and the individuals who’ve built what we call commercial AV. And we’re committed to programmes that maximise their opportunities to succeed, whether they’re AV integrators - the lifeblood of this industry designers, manufacturers or enterprise technology managers. Nearly 80 years ago, a group of people got together to figure out how better to sell film projectors to schools. Just a couple of years ago, the association that group founded - and the association’s members - put the experience of AV at the centre of everything we do. In the modern era of convergence, commoditisation and consumerisation, the experience of AV is this industry’s clear and enduring value. AVIXA reflects that. AVIXA also mirrors the broader community that we want to build the larger ecosystem of creative people who rely on AV experiences to achieve their goals, but who maybe never saw themselves as AV professionals. I’m talking about content creators, multimedia artists,

David Labuskes

graphic designers and others. For us and for them, AVIXA is a chance to make new friends and build an even stronger AV industry through the talents and ideas of so many more companies and individuals, all of whom are committed to creating exceptional experiences. We do this not only to attract new participants to our industry, but also to fulfil our obligation to our core members - the integrators, manufacturers and all in our existing channel - through a recommitment of resources to support them more strongly in delivering solutions and outcomes to their customers. We did not take the decision to change our name lightly. At the start, we didn’t intend this outcome. But we’re excited and rejuvenated by it. The more we looked at serving our industry, the more this new identity and our evolving mission became self-evident. AVIXA remains committed to its core programmes, including tradeshows, certification, standards, professional training, market intelligence and others. Although the name has changed, what the industry has come to expect from AVIXA has not. In fact, AV professionals can now expect even more from their AV association. We’re looking forward to seeing you at ISE. Find out more about AVIXA at www.avixa.org

SINGING YOUR PRAISES

HOW WE’RE TALKING UP YOU AND AV By Brad Grimes, AVIXA

[A]

re your ears burning? We’ve been talking about you. By ‘we’, I mean the AV industry’s trade association, and by ‘you’, I mean the great work you do building AV experiences that deliver outcomes for your customers. Part of InfoComm International’s evolution to AVIXA, the Audiovisual and Integrated Experience Association, was to reassert our role as a representative - as an association - in the marketplace for AV solutions and services; to act as an advocate for what those in the AV industry do, and help build a greater awareness of AV in industries where it can have the most impact. So we were talking about you in autumn, at the International Retail Design Conference (IRDC). According to AVIXA’s recently released 2017 AV Industry Outlook and Trends Analysis (IOTA) Global Summary, which was prepared for us by leading research firm IHS Markit (www.avixa.org/IOTA), the worldwide market for AV products and services in retail is poised to grow 6.5% annually from now until 2022. Earlier this year, when we partnered with publisher ST Media to survey retailers and their store designers, we found that little more than half of respondents said AV was always or often part of their retail designs. At a time when stores are competing with online commerce for customers, that number should be much larger. But there’s good news: When we asked them who they’d turn to for advice when integrating AV into retail, the top answer was an AV consultant - so we’re making progress there. At IRDC, AVIXA Chief Executive Officer Dave Labuskes, CTS, CAE, RCDD, and AV professionals from Britelite Immersive, ESI Design, and Float4, told a ballroom of about 400 brands and designers how thoughtfully planned and executed AV experiences could draw shoppers, engage them, and ultimately drive business results. The conversations throughout the event were constructive and the feedback we got was very positive. As you might expect, retailers who start with only the technology - “We put in this great videowall and now don’t know what to do with it or how to keep it up-to-date” - appreciate a broader conversation with AV integrators and designers to help understand their goals and how a solution that embraces content, space,

and technology is better than going it alone and just buying a bunch of screens. And we met retail designers who know about our InfoComm tradeshows and have made a habit of attending to stay on top of trends. One asked how our industries could work more together. We said we’d continue to attend their events and more of them should attend ours, where they’ll find new programmes, content, and solution providers that speak to their need to tell a brand’s story through AV. As a global organisation, AVIXA took the message of AV experiences to retailers in Europe at the Retail Week Interiors conference in the UK, with further plans afoot to raise awareness. AVIXA has also reached out to the financial services and hospitality industries to discuss the benefits of AV. The hospitality market is growing faster than retail - more than 10% a year globally according to the IOTA report. In our survey of the hospitality industry, we found a market that was very interested in how AV solutions could make the hotel, restaurant, or cruise experience more engaging. A whopping 74% were interested in working augmented or virtual reality into a future project - an indication that hospitality is a market open to AV innovation. In early December, we were in Berlin for OEB 2017 - a global conference about learning technology - where we stressed the importance

of new AV and collaboration platforms to education. AVIXA already has an engaged community of higher education tech managers in its membership. The goal of speaking at events like OEB, is to underscore to provosts, department heads, administrators and more, how giving additional resources to those tech managers and adopting richer AV solutions can lead to better learning outcomes. I tell you, this is the most fun we have - getting out there and telling decision makers what pro AV can do for them. People understand AV instinctively; they have 65in TVs and surroundsound systems, which can be a blessing and a curse. They don’t need convincing that AV is awesome, but it takes a little horn-tooting on behalf of the commercial AV industry for them to understand there’s value in investing in AV done properly. Have you been involved in a great install recently? As your trade association, we’re happy to brag about it behind your back. Let me know at bgrimes@avixa.org. Brad Grimes is Director of Communications for AVIXA, the Audiovisual and Integrated Experience Association, and the former editor of Pro AV magazine. He edited the McGraw-Hill Education books CTS-D, Certified Technology Specialist-Design Exam Guide; CTS: Certified Technology Specialist Exam Guide: Second Edition; and Networked AV Systems.

DIGITAL SIGNAGE n SEE FLOORPLAN: HALL 8

ith growth of over 7% per year forecast (by Markets and Markets) for digital signage, there’s still plenty of life in it. The retail industry was among the first to see its value, and it is now said to account for around 40% of all digital signage business, yet researcher Technavio forecasts that the market for displays in stores, food outlets, shopping malls and so on will grow by 15% in the next few years. That’s driven partially, and perhaps remarkably, by new retail users who have yet to embrace the technology.

“Digital signage can be a powerful Big Data application. We’re starting to see more solutions that understand better who’s on the other side of the screen – either through sensing technology or mobile integration – and can create more personal experiences through data. What good is a cool, interactive, hotel wayfinding display that keeps recommending steak restaurants to a vegetarian?” Brad Grimes, Director of Communications, AVIXA The business model in retail is now well established and changes are likely to be incremental rather than revolutionary; the trends already apparent at ISE 2017 are likely to be further developed in 2018. Increasingly, the emphasis back stage is on ease of use and ease of deployment and management, as well as the continuing quest to measure and maximise RoI, with front of house focusing on personalisation, interactivity and engagement.

WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR • According to Grand View Research, the Bluetooth beacon market will be worth $58.7 billion by 2025, experiencing CAGR of over 95%. Much of that money is likely to be spent in the digital signage market as users turn to the technology to engage with consumers’ mobile devices to deliver personalised experiences that will engage them and be a key part of the ‘customer journey’, together with technologies such as multi-touch. Expect to see an increased number of digital signage hardware and software solutions specifically designed to heighten engagement. • Proponents of purpose-designed digital signage players point to their innate stability and reliability as a key advantage over other playout mechanisms; a critical attribute for a 24/7 environment. They tend also to be optimally integrated with the leading content management systems, making deployment more straightforward. Dedicated players continue, however, to be under threat from PC-based solutions as well as SoC (system-on-chip) technology embedded in screens. Look out for examples of an evolution (think ‘hybrid’) in digital signage players as evidence that they will not only survive, but thrive. • Increasingly, digital signage screens are being equipped with inbuilt cameras (and other sensors). ‘Behind’ those cameras are AI-based machine recognition algorithms that can detect not only the presence of a viewer, but also the age and sex of that viewer, potentially adapting the communication accordingly. Sophisticated implementations can even detect the viewer’s reaction to on-screen content, changing it rapidly if it is not eliciting a positive response. ISE 2018 is likely to see growing use of AI (and Big Data) across the board to deliver actionable information – especially in digital signage.

• Why do the most successful digital signage implementations feature a mix of content, combining advertising, information and news? Simply: the same content loop repeated again and again becomes background blur, failing to get viewer attention because it is predictable – anathema to digital signage users. Attracting eyeballs is the name of the game. Large, bright screens are one way of doing this but, as ever, content is king, as it is this that drives engagement. New ways of combining and delivering content are likely to be a feature of ISE 2018. • With rapidly diminishing pixel pitches – now down well below 1.0mm – meaning they can be viewed from much closer distances, LED is starting to find favour in places where it could previously not be considered, and that includes in-store digital signage. That alone would not secure competitive advantage: their inherent ruggedness, and the creative opportunity provided by bezel-less displays, are two key benefits. LED will continue to make significant inroads into environments and applications that have long been the stronghold of LCD-based displays. • Market analyst, Research and Markets, says that the 4K technology market will grow at over 26% per year over the next five years. The transition from Full HD to Ultra HD is ongoing, not least because of the demands the higher resolution makes on the supporting network infrastructure; demands that are only now beginning to be met. Digital signage will be in the vanguard of 4K adoption, because image is (almost) everything. 4K resolution is unquestionably the future in displays, and ISE will give visitors the opportunity to find out how the 4K infrastructure is developing.

EDUCATION TECHNOLOGY n SEE FLOORPLAN: HALL 13

“The gamification - enabling learning through games, scoring, competition, and more - of education stands to have a positive impact, leading to better education outcomes, and it’s best facilitated through interactive and immersive technologies. Education sometimes lags behind other markets in its adoption of new technology, but expect to see a growing appetite in schools around the world for all things digital.” Brad Grimes, Director of Communications, AVIXA Image courtesy of Promethean

T

o its great credit, the professional audiovisual industry has played a crucial role in transforming how children learn and students are taught; a transformation that, it is widely agreed, has been entirely beneficial. Given its success, it’s unsurprising that EdTechXGlobal predicts that spending on educational technology will reach a massive $252 billion worldwide by 2020, growing at 17% per year. However, notes the company’s study, there is still much to achieve in the digitisation of schools and universities, resulting in a vast, untapped market.

While mobile devices (phones, tablets, laptops and so on) are now widely embedded in the classroom and lecture hall, the goal for many is that every pupil or student should have personal access to one; a goal that is still far from being reached. The buzz phrase here is the ‘flipped classroom’ in which the teacher is no longer the focus, but a facilitator. For those working in, or supplying to, educational organisations and who are looking to find out what’s coming, ISE 2018 holds substantial promise.

WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR • In June 2017, during a 24-hour time period, three schools in Birmingham, England, were placed in lockdown. In May 2016, 26 schools were closed on the same day after receiving bomb threats. In the future, educational establishments may spend as much on AV technology protecting their pupils as they do on helping them learn. In the USA, many manufacturers and integrators are delivering a broad range of lockdown systems to schools. It seems likely that such systems will increasingly make their way into Europe as the number of threats continues to rise. • The interactive white board (IWB) has been an educational technology success story since it was first introduced in 1991, creating a new kind of learning environment. Gradually, however, it is being supplanted by large flat panel displays that feature multi-touch interaction and provide support for a wide range of educational applications. Lower cost of ownership, easier installation and greater usability are cited as the key advantages. The IWB is far from dead, however, as ISE 2018 will demonstrate. • A malware payload delivered by a phishing email encrypted every hard drive at University College, London in June 2017 in a socalled ‘ransomware’ attack. The risk to network security is only increasing as the BYOD phenomenon gathers pace. It will be vital for schools and universities to mitigate against this type of attack, through improved device management and authentication and more sophisticated network management. Suppliers of educational technology are embracing the need to maximise the protection

of the network and data that are increasingly at the heart of educational operations. • Gamification is, according to one expert, not about turning learning into games, but about applying the science of motivation to help students stay focused and motivated, rewarding achievement and encouraging collaboration and improving learner engagement. Numerous studies have concluded that gamification achieves its aim of improving educational outcomes. Educators coming to ISE 2018 are likely to be looking for the ‘killer app’ of tomorrow. • The cloud is assuming greater significance for educational institutions. Not only does it provide a more secure approach to storing data, but it also makes that data available from wherever a pupil or student is, thus enabling learning at home to be a natural continuum of learning in the classroom. The cloud is also home to massive online open courses (MOOCs), a market forecast by Frost and Sullivan to be worth $8.5 billion by 2022. In education, as is the case in so many AV environments, the hardware is only a vehicle for the optimum delivery of the appropriate content. • Of all segments of the AV technology marketplace, education perhaps holds the greatest promise for virtual and augmented reality. VR is particularly appropriate for the participative, rather than passive, style of learning that is increasingly being favoured in the classroom in order to drive greater knowledge retention. Visitors to ISE 2018 can expect to see increasing numbers of VR/AR-enabled solutions.

RESIDENTIAL n SEE FLOORPLAN: HALL 1 / HALL 5

“Virtual user interfaces (VUIs) such as those popularised by Amazon are still big news, but we’re also seeing a real buzz around ‘aging in place’ and augmented reality, both of which we think can represent real opportunities for the custom install industry.” Walt Zerbe, Senior Director of Technology and Standards, CEDIA Image courtesy of Elan

A

ccording to researcher Mordor Intelligence, the global smart home market will be worth an incredible $119 billion in five years’ time, growing at over 14% per year. Other analysts paint a similar picture. There is little doubt that the smart homes market is maturing, with real products and real solutions becoming available. If there is a cloud on the horizon, it’s the relative proliferation of proprietary standards as opposed to open standards such as ZigBee that are designed to facilitate true interoperability.

It could be said that the past year has belonged to Amazon, with an estimated 10 million Echo and Dot units shipped in a 12-month period. Those devices are now an established part of the professional custom install industry, and voice as the preferred method of interacting with home automation and entertainment systems is now fully established. So-called VUIs, however, as widespread as they have become, are merely a front-end for increasingly sophisticated and highly integrated residential solutions.

WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR • With each passing month, the internet of things (IoT) becomes more of a reality for the home, allowing us expansive yet detailed control of our living environment. It’s been said before: there is, indeed, an app for everything, as our smartphones become our interface of choice. But for high-end installations, is the purpose-built control panel still the favoured option? It will be interesting to see if ISE witnesses the introduction of new designs, or whether the smartphone is now truly ubiquitous. • Home entertainment has been taking leaps forward, with solid state illumination (SSI) projectors transforming cost of ownership by replacing short-lived lamps with long-lived lasers and LEDs, while Dolby Atmos and its competitors – DTS:X and Auro-3D – are revolutionising what’s possible with truly immersive sound. For many, however, a 7.1.4 speaker configuration, with four ceilingmounted speakers, will be impractical. True Dolby Atmos content is still somewhat thin on the ground. Sound bars are rapidly becoming a ‘must have’ accessory for larger TVs; new bars featuring Dolby Atmos technology are likely to feature at ISE. • The responsibility of integrators to ensure the absolute security of the home networks they install has been put in a new light with domestic customers in the USA having sued their installer for not protecting them against breaches; putting those installers out of business. The challenges are only exacerbated with the advent of the IoT, and the growing aspirations of homeowners. Expect to see more solutions that will help custom installers take the necessary home security steps.

• So far, Google Home hasn’t managed to put much of a dent in the impressive sales of Amazon’s Echo and Dot. Apple has launched its Siri-based HomePod to try to get a slice of the smart speaker action, and Microsoft’s Cortana is featured in the Harman Kardon Invoke. Voice-activated remote controls for TV, for example, struggled to take off, but this new generation of devices seems to have caught everyone’s imagination. It’s hard to see Google, Apple or Microsoft challenging Amazon’s supremacy and making inroads into the market, but those are three industry players you underestimate at your peril. • It’s estimated that two-thirds of all the people who have ever lived to 65 and beyond are alive today. That equates to over 600 million people, comprising just less than 10% of the total population. An aging population presents enormous challenges, verging on crisis, but also opportunities, especially in an era where care outside the home is rapidly becoming unaffordable. ‘Aging in place’ is the new buzz phrase. Custom install solutions designed for this huge and rapidly-growing market seem likely to proliferate, especially those that allow ‘remote care’ by concerned offspring. • There seems little doubt that virtual reality, augmented reality and mixed reality will assume increasing significance for all of us in the coming years, and it will almost certainly have a profound impact on the AV industry. The same can be said for artificial intelligence. But: how, and where? ISE may help us understand whether AR, VR and MR have a role to play in the residential market beyond entertainment, and what the role of AI might be.

avigant Research suggests that 2017 was a tipping point in which “building owners and key decision makers accelerated investments in intelligent building solutions that embody the technology foundation of digital transformation”. The scalable, secure and open platforms of these solutions are, the company said, generating cost savings, providing energy efficiency and sustainability improvements, and enhancing occupant satisfaction. Estimates as to its potential size vary wildly, perhaps because of complexities in defining the market. Zion Research put it at $36 billion by 2020, with a CAGR of over 30%, while Technavio puts growth at ‘only’ 12%.

“Smart buildings and cities stand to be a significant market for the pro-AV industry in the years ahead. Researchers for our IOTA (Industry Outlook and Trends Analysis) report indicate that the drive towards smarter buildings is generating demand for more and better control system technology. And from a solution standpoint, it means the build-out of more and more sophisticated command and control facilities for monitoring all the data and video that smart buildings create.” Brad Grimes, Director of Communications, AVIXA Many commentators note that there is a shift taking place in smart buildings, which takes traditional building management system approaches but adds to them the concept that it’s the people, not the buildings, that are important. Smart software will help establish a superior connection between office space and its inhabitants (air quality management, given its impact on productivity, is likely to become a focus), and may even leverage individual employee IDs to set personalised preferences.

WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR • Research and Markets recently issued a report looking at startup companies – often venture capital-funded – targeting the smart buildings market. The company notes the growing significance of IoT as a way of connecting sensors to central building management systems. Smart buildings have long been the market preserve of some of the major industrial players, but will ISE 2018 see increasing numbers of small companies addressing the space with nimble, innovative solutions? • Smart buildings, with their extensive arrays of connected sensors for heating, lighting, security, occupancy and so on, are capable of generating a torrent of data – Big Data. The real value of smart buildings comes, not with the ability to automate day-to-day control of, for example, energy consumption (Siemens says buildings account for 41% of energy consumption worldwide), but by capturing that data, analysing it and turning it into actionable information that can inform strategic and tactical decisions about how to optimise building management. AI has a role to play here and can be expected to underpin new software solutions that ‘bring it all together’, allowing data-driven building management. • The projected growth in the smart buildings market may be hampered by the continuing plethora of connectivity technologies, with no single standard yet agreed. KNX (which combines three previous standards) has a strong position, but other building management protocols such as DALI for lighting and BACnet still have their niches. Smart buildings researcher Memoori calls it a “fragmented ecosystem”. What’s needed is a single ‘do everything’

protocol. Could it be TSN (Time Sensitive Networking), the development of AVB (Audio Video Bridging) which has its sights firmly set on the Internet of Things? ISE may give us a clue. • Estate managers are now able, more than ever before, to assess which spaces are being used, with what frequency, and by how many people. Beyond that, an increasingly mobile or remote working employee base means that demands for traditional office space are changing, and need to be reflected in building management strategy – with the aim of reducing real estate costs. Increasingly, building management systems will not only address energy consumption, security and so on, but also space and asset optimisation. • It is widely agreed that the millennial generation, which constitutes close to half the workforce, has working environment preferences that need to be reflected if talent is to be recruited and retained. That’s why we’ve seen the rise of the so-called ‘huddle room’ – flexible, ad hoc spaces where informal meetings can be quickly convened. New generation facilities management systems will still likely have cost saving and corporate sustainability goals at their heart, but in the future expect more attention to be paid to meeting building occupant expectations. • The smart buildings market is unlikely to remain immune to the progressive IT-ification of the AV industry, with building management systems increasingly leveraging the corporate network, and building/ employee security sitting alongside data/network security as an IT responsibility. Will the solutions on show at ISE 2018 reflect that emerging reality?

UNIFIED COMMUNICATIONS n SEE FLOORPLAN: HALL 11

M

eetings have always been central to the way business works. Over the past two decades, the AV industry has helped transform them. Unified communications (UC), as the name implies, encompasses all of the ways in which we interact and, more importantly, attempts to integrate them into a simple, seamless experience. With a worthwhile goal like that, it’s no surprise that Grand View Research believes the UC market will be worth almost $100 billion in five years’ time. The market is, however, transitioning and with the inexorable rise of huddle rooms, the ‘digital workplace’ and so-called ‘activity-based working’ it is now a far cry from the palatial videoconferencing suites of yesteryear. At the heart of that transition are two key

“At ISE 2018, we’re expecting to see more service-based solutions such as cloud telephony, cloud video, cloud storage, cloud collaboration, an increase in online corporate video streaming hosted services, allied production technologies, and even more Skype for Business solutions.” Gareth Lloyd, Marketing & Communications Manager, Saville AV drivers: the growing population that is no longer office-based (work is no longer a place – it’s an activity), and the working preferences of the millennials who, by 2020, will form the majority of the workforce.

WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR • The new way of working is casual, informal, unstructured, with ad hoc meetings convened ‘on the fly’ in the nearest available space, rather than in a formal conference room that needs to be booked weeks in advance. They’re interactive, designed to facilitate sharing and the exchange of ideas, and they leverage AV technology to enable this. The huddle room phenomenon so evident at ISE 2017 will be no less so this year. It’s a market for which almost every UC vendor has an offering. It’ll be interesting to see if ISE shows us only incremental improvements, or something radically new and exciting. • There’s a growing feeling among end users and AV solutions providers that Microsoft’s Skype for Business (SfB) is establishing a dominant position in the UC market, and that a UC solution that doesn’t have it at its heart is unlikely to have a long-term future. Momentum is unquestionably building to the point where it can be considered the industry standard. Previously, a less-than-ideal enterprise voice or video integration platform, it’s now displacing incumbent vendors around the world. ISE 2018 will see the introduction of many more UC solutions based on Microsoft’s offering. • While on-premise UC deployments were said to account for almost 60% of the installed base in 2015, the dynamic is changing with a shift towards hosted, cloud-based, UCaaS implementations. These are claimed to provide better flexibility, enhanced scalability, reduced cost, simpler maintenance and are more appropriate for geographically-dispersed organisations. Further developments in cloud technology will certainly accelerate this trend. Look out for an increasing number of vendors offering integrated support for third party-facilitated solutions.

• In the huddle room environment, the USB interface appears to be ubiquitous with USB-connected cameras, USB-connected microphones and so on, as UC solutions are scaled up from consumer devices rather than scaled down from earlier meeting connectivity solutions; simple user plug ’n’ play is at the centre of the design approach. What many are looking for, however, are real solutions that leverage that simplicity into an integrated whole, together with services that make all those USB devices easier to manage. Will ISE deliver on either of those desires? • AI will increasingly permeate the AV industry, and those who find imaginative, innovative uses for it that deliver compelling business outcomes will likely succeed. In the UC market, the opportunity exists to further facilitate communication between meeting participants if AI can be used for natural language recognition and automatic translation. AI can perhaps also be used for facial recognition for improved participant customisation and personalisation. AI is coming soon to an AV application near you. • With the world of business continually evolving and changing in response to shifts in politics, finance and demographics, there has always been a realisation that today’s solution may not be right for tomorrow. Historically, that has meant value was placed on upgradability, scalability and flexibility, in a bid for ‘future-proof’ solutions. Now, the RoI landscape is changing: the new paradigm is becoming one in which timescales are shorter, so initial investment is lower, with a view to short-term replacement. That’s driving down UC prices, meaning we’ll see new levels of affordability at ISE 2018.

AUDIO & LIVE EVENTS TECHNOLOGY n SEE FLOORPLAN: HALL 6 / HALL 7

A

s in just about every facet of the audiovisual industry, the discussion in the audio world is all about networking and the migration of multichannel audio distribution to Ethernet platforms. It’s also hugely relevant for those involved in live events. Audio, to the undoubted horror of audiophiles, is becoming little more than packets of data and something else to clog up the IT department’s infrastructure; albeit much less than video. While improvements in

“From an audio point of view, we’re hoping ISE 2018 will see more integration of Dante into AV products. We’d also like to see more consideration given to handling surround sound in integrated AV environments such as commercial decoders, down mixers and so on. Our third wish is to see more in the way of controlled-dispersion speakers.” Andi Allan, Senior Design Engineer, Reflex sound quality are still possible, even if highly incremental, the focus for audio manufacturers is increasingly on new applications, aesthetics and ease of installation and use. Audio technologies such as Dolby Atmos offer exciting potential to the live events industry, creating the opportunity of providing captivating sound for enthralling images. Here, though, the real excitement surrounds the ‘phygital’ experience; the new buzzword to describe an environment, often enabled by VR/AR, in which the physical and digital worlds merge and become indistinguishable from each other.

WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR • In the competition to establish a networked audio standard, there’s little doubt that the AVnu Alliance, with its open AVB (audio video bridging) offering, currently lags far behind Audinate’s proprietary (but de facto standard) Dante solution in terms of industry acceptance. In theory, an open standard should prevail, plus AVB has aspirations to play in the Internet of Things space, making it potentially very attractive. Will ISE 2018 see numbers of manufacturers declare allegiance to AVB, or will Dante maintain its significant adoption edge? • The Media Networking Alliance – the association behind the AES67 standard – and 14 of its members recently took part in the SMPTE ST 2110 interoperability demonstration, showing how AES67 provides signal interoperability across all of the current leading IP-based audio networking protocols. The SMPTE 2110 standard is expected to have been published before the RAI opens its doors. For anyone who doubts that IP networking of audio is the future, ISE 2018 will be the place to convince them otherwise. Look out for numerous new network-connectable audio platforms. • According to some industry commentators, Dolby Atmos is the future of sound, although competing technologies like DTS:X and Auro-3D may have something to say about that. These 360-degree audio technologies unquestionably have a place in cinema, and are finding their way into increasing numbers of homes, but how will they be deployed in the mainstream pro-AV market? Live events and immersive experiences are obvious candidates, but which other sectors could utilise this technology? ISE will be the place

to find out whether three-dimensional sound can be more than a niche solution. • When it comes to live events, projectors continue to reign. The advent of SSI (solid state illumination) has been transformative, using LEDs and lasers instead of lamps, with brightness now reaching upwards of 30,000 lumens. Those projectors are also getting smarter, providing the functionality and processing performance necessary to deliver the mapping which is central to many of the highest profile events. More manufacturers embracing SSI and higher brightness projectors will be prominent at ISE this time around. • 4K/Ultra HD projectors, capable of delivering more detailed images on larger surfaces, are also becoming commonplace. The higher resolution, however, creates challenges for the supporting infrastructure such as image processors and media servers, not to mention the bandwidth necessary to move those images around. HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.2 are key technologies here, as is networked video. New products that support the substantial demands of 4K (and beyond) in a live events environment are expected to feature at ISE. • AI, blended experiences, social media integration via live video and virtual/augmented reality are expected to be among the biggest trends for live events in 2018 and beyond. 3D may not have had the impact many hoped, but virtual reality promises to transform spectacles such as sport and concerts with experiences that are both communal and individual. Live events won’t be the only part of the AV industry that will embrace VR/AR.

The software components firstly provide the En-Scene object positioning tool, which allows individual placement and movement of up to 64 ‘sound objects’. Secondly, the room emulation software, En-Space, gives a means to add room emulation of reverberation signatures to any given space. The d&b Soundscape is a two-layered technology. The basic layer is the configuration, the setup, done as usual in the d&b ArrayCalc software modelling tool. Wireline Advantage eliminates black drop for stunning aesthetic

Instant connectivity with Datapath’s applicationsharing software Quant

When designing large venues, ballrooms or architecturally appealing rooms, one may feel conflicted when installing a traditional screen in a room with high ceilings that will require a lot of black drop to accommodate an appropriate screen viewing height. The Wireline Advantage is an electric projection screen for large venues that eliminates black drop by lowering only the viewing area to an appropriate height with thin steel cables. The result is stunning, with a large screen that is almost invisibly suspended at the right viewing height, leaving the architecture of the room exposed. The Wireline is the only product that can accommodate a screen at the appropriate viewing height while the housing can be ceiling recessed and out of sight. The housing features the sliding installation brackets and self-trimming edge that are inherent to the Advantage line. Available with cable lengths up to 8.8m.

Datapath, world-leading engineers of visual solutions, releases its advanced application-sharing software, Quant. The unique capabilities of Quant allows users to view and share application windows, as well as interact and make changes to original source files. The software provides complete security as it’s within the same network, working behind the firewall and not loading data through company servers. Users also have full control over each application, deciding editing and sharing rights. Any changes are synchronised instantly, meaning updates made by multiple users are seen as they happen. Extensive user advantages make Quant perfect for a number of working environments. In control rooms, for example, real-time information on a workstation can be shared to both a video wall and with workstation personnel who can instantly react to the information provided. Business environments also benefit where project teams from different departments can work on the same application irrespective of where they are located.

Qbic Technology

Projecta is rolling with Parallax motorised ALR

Qbic launches TD-0350 Deskbooking Panel-PC workspace management technology

Too much light in a room for quality projection? Now there’s a solution: Parallax for motorised projection screens. Parallax 0.8 ALR is now available in the Tensioned Elpro Concept and Tensioned DescenderPRO, so even an ALR material can be rolled out only when projection is needed. Parallax is a projection technology that features an advanced optical lens system that rejects light, rather than only diffusing light. Up until now, this ALR material was only available in a fixed frame projection screen, but now it can also be selected as a surface option in the two most popular motorised screens. Parallax is made up of multiple micro-layers to achieve its light blocking properties and superior viewing angles. Each micro-layer has a function in creating the brightly lit display. Layers that are black boost contrast and absorb ambient light from the sides, while a specially shaped layer blocks light from above.

Qbic Technology introduces its new product, TD-0350 Deskbooking Panel-PC, a 3.5in panel PC which ensures you maximise the use of your work environment while bringing you a seamless booking experience. The innovative product matches perfectly with hot desking and desk hoteling environments. No matter how you set up your desks, TD-0350 Deskbooking Panel-PC can be fixed on any surface and helps you organise, manage and make them bookable to create a more dynamic work environment. Users can view the occupancy of the workspace types - Available or Occupied - by adjustable chromatic status light and state-of-the-art touchscreen. TD-0350 Deskbooking Panel-PC helps you control your desk effectively in any room, and spend more time on the work and less on the booking.

Williams Sound

DIGI-WAVE digital communication - new interpretation modes Williams Sound is pleased to announce the enhanced functionality of its Digi-Wave DLT 300 transceiver. The DLT 300 currently features a true interpretation mode, where an interpreter hears the floor language in his/her headset while simultaneously transmitting the interpreted language on a separate channel. The DLT 300 will now boast even greater flexibility with its new Bilingual and Relay modes. Bilingual Mode enables an interpreter to quickly and seamlessly switch the transmission channel when he/she switches between different target languages. An interpreter can react quickly when the floor language changes - there is no need to change gears, rewire or instruct the audience to change channels. Relay Mode enables one interpreter to act as the relay language - a worldwide first for a completely portable solution. There is no need for an interpreter console or base station to offer relay capability. Both new interpretation modes are fully compatible with DLT 300 transceivers and DLR 360 receivers from earlier firmware versions. STAND: 7-C210

CRESTRON’S NETWORK AV OFFERS SECURITY AND RELIABILITY

[O]

rganisations are quickly steering away from traditional AV systems and are now utilising their existing Ethernet infrastructure to share and distribute content on the network. Crestron has developed the most secure and reliable solutions that transmit 4K60 signals and H.264 sources anywhere on an existing 1GB network, including Crestron touchscreens, digital signage displays, remote buildings, and global offices. Utilising Ethernet, instead of HDBaseT infrastructure, provides organisations with greater flexibility and scalability allowing you to leverage your existing infrastructure. All other types of infrastructure have inherent limitations, while Network AV makes it easy to distribute AV signal across buildings, campuses, and geographic regions. Most organisations already have a 1GB network installed - by building on the existing network you can reduce time and costs drastically. Network AV eliminates the limitations that arise from using a matrix switcher with a set number of inputs and outputs. Ensuring that you are never stuck, you can always expand and add an encoder or decoder wherever you need it. Earlier this year, Crestron debuted the Crestron DMNVX-350, a compact video encoder/decoder designed to function as either a transmitter or receiver with the ability to switch between the two modes. DigitalMedia NVX technology transports 4K60 and 4:4:4 HDR video over a

standard 1GB Ethernet, and was specifically engineered for demanding conference room and classroom applications to ensure real-time, zero latency, full-motion 4K60 video performance for the presentation of multimedia, videoconferencing, and live camera images. DM-NVX supports standard security protocols and delivers a true enterprisegrade solution that fulfils the demanding IT policies of corporate, university, medical, military, and government clients. It features simple browser-based monitor, control and management, USB2.0 routing for cameras, microphones, and KVM, audio DSP, HDMI source switching, and support for copper and fibre LAN connectivity. DM-NVX offers an infinitely scalable, one-stop solution for any-sized network AV installation. Find out more at www.crestron.com STAND: 2-C20

ADAPTABLE INTEL UNITE SOLUTION PROVIDES FLEXIBILITY FOR IT AND AV SPECIALISTS

[D]

igital transformation continues to drive new ideas on a smarter workplace that facilitates better ways to collaborate based on where and how employees want to work. We’re seeing that as the workplace evolves, so do the spaces that facilitate communication, with a popularisation of impromptu meeting spaces, including company cafés, lounges and huddle rooms, to name a few. However, for all the promise on the new and smarter workplace, the way we meet and share information today is still overly complex. Employees are often frustrated with the challenges associated with getting a meeting started and sharing information. This accrues to lost time and productivity. Remote participants can often feel isolated from colleagues, due to a different and fragmented meeting experience compared to colleagues in the room. IT and AV specialists experience their own set of frustrations, needing an easier way to

blend a mix of hardware and software to drive a meaningful experience for employees. And while we’re seeing a transformation in using spaces in new and innovative ways, there’s a technology deficit in those spaces - like huddle rooms with limited compute power to strengthen collaboration. Intel is creating a modern way to collaborate based on how employees want to work, while giving IT an easy way to remotely deploy and manage the experience with the Intel Unite solution. Intel Unite is a simple, customisable wireless collaboration solution that enables employees to start meetings quickly. There’s no need for dongles, adaptors or cables and it runs on a breadth of devices, including iPads, Android tablets, Macs, iPhones and PCs. Content is seamlessly shared to meeting rooms and remote users, and guests can easily connect into those sessions in a secure way. Collaboration is easy too, with built-in annotations and the ability to enjoy HD video

and audio for in-room participants. It provides an open architecture for AV specialists to integrate it within a broader portfolio of AV solutions. For IT and AV specialists, the Intel Unite solution is also built on top of the Intel vPro platform for trusted performance, security, and manageability. ROADMAP

PLATINUM THE PATH TO TRANSFORMATION 1. Take inventory of your current collaboration technologies and needs Members of your organisation are most likely using tools you don’t know about to solve problems you don’t know about. Identifying what you are already utilising is the most critical (and most overlooked) step in figuring out what tools you need. But considering the specific business needs, priorities and structure is critical in understanding the types of tools the organisation needs. These conversations give you insight into the patterns and preferences of use to assist you in finding the right overall solution. 2. Identify the tools you don’t need After identifying the tools each department deploys, figure out what is actually being used. By evaluating your current solutions, identifying what end users are looking for and getting rid of unnecessary solutions, you can simplify your collaboration needs.

HOW TO BUILD A COLLABORATION ECOSYSTEM

[C]

ollaborating within the workplace is sometimes like trying to communicate in an office where everyone speaks a different language. For IT departments in particular, the list of tools to manage, solutions to maintain and subscriptions to pay for just gets longer, more complicated and more costly, as end-users implement their own tools. Thankfully, there are a few steps you can take to remedy the confusion and transform it into a carefully constructed, cost-saving and resourcesaving collaboration ecosystem.

WHAT IS A COLLABORATION ECOSYSTEM? A collaboration ecosystem is the set of tools and services a company uses to keep employees connected - and those employees connected to customers, partners and suppliers. Your collaboration ecosystem should be carefully interconnected, absent of overlap, consistent across users and incredibly reliable.

3. Consolidate where possible After evaluating the tools across your organisation, it’s likely you’ll find feature overlap. The best thing to do here is reduce the number of vendors and prioritise interoperability. Smoothly integrating and condensing your services not only cuts costs, it makes it easier to control, deploy and manage across your organisation. 4. Gather key stakeholders to drive adoption To successfully consolidate your technology solutions, you also have to get your end users, department leaders and everyone else on board. Find a key partner in each department who can help drive adoption. That way, you can generate excitement about adoption while reducing any hiccups and surprises that would push users away. We know change isn’t easy. But by taking inventory, cutting old and unnecessary tools, and replacing them with a holistic collaboration solution from Lifesize, you can save money, time and stress for you, your team and your company. Lifesize is built with IT in mind. Not only do we have more than a decade of experience designing and developing innovative HD cameras and touchscreen conference phones, we also have features like a shared directory and Skype for Business integrations that make meeting and collaborating with anyone easy. By combining audio, video and web conferencing, chat and the ability to stream and record, Lifesize can help you reach maximum collaboration productivity. PANASONIC TAKES HOLOGRAPHIC PROJECTION TO THE NEXT LEVEL

[T]

he Panasonic ‘showstopper’ has become a must see at ISE over recent years. From live fashion catwalks to projection mapped sports cars, 4K robotic screens and magic shows featuring moving projection. ISE 2018, will see a reoccurrence of this high level of projection, featuring a live event ‘showstopper’, which will combine visual art performers, laser projection technology and 3D mapping courtesy of Panasonic’s high end, 3-chip DLP laser projectors, developed for the live entertainment market. For the 2018 edition of the show, the Japanese manufacturer is set to create holographic magic. It will produce a mix of dance and projection that will have audiences wondering where the live performers start and the projection finishes. The combination of Panasonic laser projection technology and NovaLine’s invisible holographic screen was most recently used during ‘Holland zingt Hazes’ - four concerts at the Ziggo Dome, Amsterdam. Panasonic and NovaLine brought legendary Dutch crooner, André Hazes, back to life as a captivating hologram.

The star was projected onto a newly developed screen measuring 15m wide and 3m high, which is virtually invisible to the human eye. The screen is injected with the special nanolayer, which when combined with a laser light from Panasonic’s PT-RZ31K laser projector, created a very bright and realistic looking image, producing an extraordinary and memorable concert. “The screen is a completely new solution for holographic displays. The canvas measures 15m by 3m, weighs two-kilos and is invisible to the human eye, but is also very robust. When designing it, we used new nanomaterials with amazing properties. The screen captures only the light from the laser projection and absorbs all other light sources, so the audience not only sees a very accurate hologram but can also see through it,” said Liam Mahon, Market Developer at NovaLine. Photos and videos of André were used to perfectly recreate all his facial features. Black can sometimes be problematic in projections, but the high quality of the colours and images meant the producers could choose a classic projection of André, appearing in his signature black suit

and black hat. “There is a magic surrounding projection mapping, which is hard to achieve with other visual techniques,” said Hartmut Kulessa, Panasonic European Marketing Manager. “Laser projection technology has the ability to engage people and bring objects to life with compelling, storytelling experiences.” Panasonic will, once again, be using ISE 2018 to lead the way for new and fascinating visual experiences that will soon create visitor engagement in many different ways - come and see the Panasonic showstopper.
