LYON HIRES NEW FACULTY, STAFF MEMBERS DR. SUZANNE CUNNINGHAM praises experience as the key to success. She brings plenty of it—more than 35 years of teaching experience—to Lyon College as a visiting assistant professor of education. Cunningham received her bachelor’s degree in sociology from Arkansas State University in 1974. While studying at ASU, she worked at the Dr. John T. Gray Memorial School, where she worked with special education students. After receiving a bachelor’s degree in special education from Southeast Missouri State University, Cunningham began teaching special education at Booneville, Missouri. She moved to Houston, Texas, and taught special education classes at Aldine and Cypress-Fairbanks schools—while she studied at North Texas State University—before returning to Booneville for two years. She received her master of education degree from the University of Missouri. She was assistant principal for few years at Lewisville, Lanier High School, Gullet Elementary School, and Winn Elementary School, all in Texas. She became principal of Winn Elementary School in 1995—the same year she received her doctorate of educational administration from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. In 1999, she became principal of the newly opened Hermelinda Rodriguez Elementary School in Austin, where she served for 10 years. The school enrolled more than 950 students with low socio-economic status and had a mostly minority demographic. Under Cunningham’s tutelage, the school earned “recognized” status in 2001-02 and 2004-05, and achieved a “Gold” rating in reading and math. DR. CASSIA OLIVEIRA has been appointed assistant professor of biology at Lyon College. Oliveira spent the past year working as a lecturer in biology and lab manager at Concord University in Athens, West Virginia. Prior to that, she was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Nebraska’s School of Biological Sciences and an National Science Foundation (NSF) postdoctoral fellow at the University of Arkansas’s Department of Biological Sciences. She received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Sao Paulo State University in Brazil, where she worked as both an undergraduate researcher and a graduate research assistant. Following her master’s degree, Oliveira studied at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville for her doctorate in ecology and evolutionary biology. She worked as an National Science Foundation graduate research assistant during this time. Oliveira specializes in evolutionary biology, genetics, and ecology, although she has a secondary interest in principles of biology, cell biology, molecular biology, population and quantitative genetics, and phylogenetics. She taught three courses this past year at Concord University and has served as a guest lecturer and teaching assistant at the University of Arkansas. MS. MORGAN PAGE is serving as a visiting assistant professor of art at Lyon this fall. Page received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in photography and digital media from the University of Houston, and a Master of Fine Arts degree from Rutgers University in 2008. Page has taught as an adjunct instructor at the Mitchell College, the University of Bridgeport, the University of New Haven, Rutgers, Mason Gross School of the Arts, and most recently, the Lyme Academy College of Fine Art in Old Lyme, Connecticut. She received the Paul Robeson Emerging Artist Award, the Adolf Konrad Artist-In-Residence Award (through the Newark Museum), and a Curricular Grant for her digital photography course at Mitchell College. She has exhibited her work and participated in performances at many places in12
