Supporting our MSMEs A Night in Fort George

April 13, 2023 – A night in the Fort George division saw an outpour of micro, small and medium businesses at an event that was called, Night Market in Fort George. The event aimed at not only celebrating mothers in the area, in time for Mothers’ Day, but it also stirred commerce within the division.

Area Representative for Fort George, Henry Usher, has referred to these small businesses as the engines of the economy. The Night Market in Fort George allowed for a wide display of locally made products, ranging from jewelry to clothing and from beverages to a variety of food and desserts. The event was a collaboration of the Fort George division and the Belize City Council.

The signing of a Consent Agreement for a Solar System Project, Indian Creek, Toledo took place this pasted Saturday, May 6th in the Indian Creek Community.

This initiative is a part of the Rural Electrification Project which is a first of a kind within the country.

Ryan Cobb, Energy Director, Ministry of Public Utilities, Energy Logistics, and E-Governance, “It is a 400 kilowatts solar hybrid system mini-grid where we will be producing electricity from solar panels, batteries, and diesel generation as a backup. What will happen is that this grid is isolated, so it is not connected to the national grid and will be producing power local, clean energy here.”

This is a partnership with Belize Electricity Limited which will be operating and managing the system. Director Cobb goes on to share, “One of the benefits of partnering with BEL is that the resident on Indian Creek will be able to enjoy power at the national rate.

Hon. Michel ‘Micho’ Chebat, Minister of Public Utilities, Energy Logistics, and E-Governance, “Across the country of Belize we have about twenty (20) villages that don’t have any electricity at all and so we are working hard to bring electricity because we understand what the value it is to each of us. We understand how electricity can change all of our lives.”

Minister Chebat went on to, “This plant that you have here is a real example of that, is an example of a people and government working together towards a common good.”

Ernesto Choc, Chairman of Indian Creek, “Today is a very, very important day for us in the Village of Indian Creek. This is a milestone for us to reach. Thirsty-three homes are already connected, so there is two hundred and eight homes that really need to be connected, we really need it, we really want electricity to be connected. So, yes like I said we are in the dark, so we have been so long since we don’t have electricity, so now we are very proud of it, and we are proud of the government it assists us a lot.”

Area Representative, Toledo West, “We have good news Indian Creek, Golden Stream, and Medina Bank unuh wah get electricity but equally so we have completed the FPIC for San Vicente, Jalacte, San Benito Poite, Corazon Creek and one other community in the Toledo District. They will also get electricity under an EU program with the government of Belize.”

This was done through funding from the United Arab Emirates of US$2.3 million, while BEL is partnering to build the transmission and distribution. Empowering Rural Communities - Empowering Our People
