INTRODUCTION

Lucas Hoops//Gregroy Speck // A quick glance at Tyrol, or any other region, may call up characteristic images that articulate uniqueness to the region. In this case, what are the distinctive elements that make Tyrolean architecture ‘Tyrolean’? Do we examine material qualities that might point to an origin of architectural form that at one point was dependent upon locally accessible materials? Is it useful to examine tectonic features in these buildings to see if some essential cultural interpretation has become embodied in the built environment?

Would it be possible to articulate a formula from which to identify, and then recreate Tyrolean architectural features?

We began our analysis in the buildings we photographed around the city, but we stumbled upon something quite intriguing that made the whole statement clear to us about the essential truth of contemporary Tyrolean architecture. What we found was a LEGO house that was for sale on ebay from the 1970’s that was referred to as ‘Tirolerhaus’.

The little house used all the pieces that any other LEGO model might contain; therefore, besides the particular assemblage of the pieces, there was nothing that really made the house distinctive from any other LEGO house model. What if this was also the case for real houses?

We began to investigate the pieces and building products that made up homes in Tirol. We found that there was a whole catalogue of products and companies that intentionally appropriated the name Tirol. With the ubiquity of objects, products, and advertising that contained the name ‘Tirol’, we began to understand that Tirol was like a brand name.

Moreover, it was a brand name that had no apparent authority other than perhaps the state itself.

There was no formula for a regional architecture, but rather Tyrolean Architecture were precisely a catalogue of elements that used Tirol as a marketing strategy regardless of origin, or resemblance to anything genuinely Tyrolean.

A TIROLEAN CATALOGUE OF SIMULACRA

THE SYSTEM OF OBJECTS Jean Baudrillard

Baudrillard claims that consumerism is the main drive of capitalism. He explores the values an object can have: fuctional value, exchange value, symbolic value, and sign value.

He concentrates on the distinction between symbolic value and sign value. Symbolic value gives an object a symbolic meaning, such as a wedding ring symbolizing marriage or love. Sign value gives an object a value within a system of object. The type or size of the ring, whether it has a diamond, or something else, all place it within a system that describe something about the taste or class of a consumer.

Baudrillard’s essential point is that the needs of a consumerist society are constructed, and that these needs precede mere production of objects. He claims in the essay that the goal of advertising is to functionalize the consumer by monopolizing the psychological of needs of a group of consumers.

The purpose of a brand is to signal a product, but also to provoke an emotional, memorial, or sensational affect.

“The psychological restructuration of the consumer is performed through a single word – Phillips, Olida, General Motors – a word capable of summing up both the diversity of objects and a host of diffuse meanings.” (SoO 17)

The way “Tyrol” appears in brand or product names demonstrates the strategy of signing the objects as having a visceral connection to an original Tyrolean identity.

‚TIROL‘ THE BRAND

We propose that “Tirol” has, in a certain way, become a brand. However, it does not belong to particular company or enterprise, but it “brands” products or businesses to be identified as having a regional character.

Tyrol uses landscape, products, and aesthetics to distinguish identifieable markers of regional charater. Since it is located in the alps, a mountain cultural character has become important for the tourism industry. Hiking and skiing are activities that attract people to the region, but ironically it also has many local participants that integrate these activities into their lives.

Tyrolia is a firm that produces ski‘s, one of the major regional pastimes, but the company is from Vienna. While relatively old, the company adopted the name Tyrolia in 1949. It is in this way that product branding can appropriate the name Tirol to make the regional identifier a configuration of branding itself.

Even the built environment is labeled with this brand identifier. The “wanderwegs” (hiking paths) are dotted with signposts pointing in directions and informing the hiker of the distance to the next stopping point.

A SLEW OF TIROLEAN PRODUCTS

Tyrol, or Tirol, can be found on numerous products of different kinds. Above we have some food products. Handl Tirol makes ham products. Their logos use the characteristic landscape, and even at times close ups of traditional Bauernhaus (Farmer houses). Their slogan reads, “Werde Tiroler” (become Tyrolean). Tirol Milch has an Alm built in traditional style that is used as a promotional tool to be visited by the general population.

Tirolia is a company no longer in existence that produced this multipurpose stove/oven/heater. It is not clear whether it’s functional use was derived 14

from the fact that historical homes had a central fireplace that served all these purposes as well, but the idea is still there. A set of Lamps also appropriate the name Tirol. They have wooden veneer and copper colored structure giving of a sense of hunting lodge. The set of faucets take names from individual villages found in Tyrol, giving even more specificity in terms of region, but also declaring knowledge of Tyrolean geography.

TIROLFENSTER is a company that produces modern windows, but takes ‘Tirol’ into it’s nomenclature as a promotional tool. All it’s windows are named “Tirol” and then the model name, such as “Tirol Classic” or “Tirol Avant-Garde”.

Although they all share wood as a common material at base, they have several non-traditional materials, such as aluminum, added onto the windows.

In fact there are no indications that the windows have any resemblance to traditional window construction. These windows could be produced anywhere and have no tectonic significance. However, the name that advertises the name of the company is what makes the window identifiable as Tirolean.

The first example is the “Tirol Classic” window. It has three panes of glass to insulate against the surrounding environment. The accompanying pic18

tures show examples where the window has been used in construction. The design tries to respect the character of the houses where it is placed.

In comparison, the “Tirol Avant-Garde” has a black aluminum paneling giving the window a sleek look from the outside. The accompanying examples show that the window was placed in a modernist house. However, it is interesting to note that the interior face of the window is still the same wood used in the Tirol classic. One of the photographs shows a door, clad in black aluminum on the exterior face, with the interior face exposing the wood.

The wood references that this is still connected somehow to this more common element in Tirolean Architecture.

FAUX MATERIALITY

METABOLIC THEORY Gottfried Semper

Semper sought to explain a phenomenon that had been observed and interpreted in architectural history since its beginnings: the transfer of specific material characteristic onto other materials. Vitruvius claimed in his “Ten Books on architecture” that the shape of the column and the entablature of a typical Greek temple emerged from timber. Imitation and mimicry in the old theory of mimesis too often reduces the task of art to representating reality in painting or sculpture. However, in architecture representation is pervasive.

During the middle of the 18th Century imitation was being discussed by several theorists. Winckelmann claimed that the imitation of ancient works of art was happening rather than the imitation of nature. Quatremère de Quincy argued for an imitation that didn’t copy, but represented the performed activity. The original forms provided by nature, even the wooden primitive hut, are constantly in the process of transforming through imitation in the same way artifacts of art are.

In the nineteenth and twentieth century imitation was considered as a general principle of the arts. Schelling, however, claimed as his central thesis that architecture must “strip” art down to immediate or essential needs; an idea Semper anticipated. This idea, metabolism, became a method to liberate architecture to adopt suitable construction materials, so that they can be used for architecture and become “frozen music”.

The theory of imitation emerged mainly from nineteenth century British Ethnography. At the time they were evaluating a huge inventory of new material from the colonies, and beginning to explain the development of commodity structures with Darwinian principles.

What these popular and scientific reflections on the phenomenon of metabolism and mimesis have in common was the critique of falsifying materiality into artificial molds, the construction of “foreign” materials as illusion, replacement, and the inability to break out of conventions when a new task required a new solutions. For Semper, however, metabolism was a principle that had the ability to remember an object’s cultural significance that surpassed the value of its everyday use. For meaning of a “substance” to emerge, i.e. the raw material for the drama, it was important to emphasize the need for artistic treatment. He pointed out that the narrative, “the material to be treated”, is to remodel itself as the destiny of an individual, increasing monumentality to reach us as expressions of a universal human charm and greatness.

TIROL ENLIVENING THE SENSES Colour Houses, rooms, furniture, utensils, clothes, etc. get their attractive appearance through colour. Colours not only have the ability to protect, to beautify, and to preserve values - colours also create moods such as joy or sadness. Colourful and brightly lit spaces, as well as colourful clothes, for example, can affect the psyche during winter depression in a positive way. Bright colours seem lighter, dark colours heavier. Brightening a colour weakens their meaning and subtilizes their effect. Bright rooms look bigger, darker rooms smaller. Dark walls are more effective and seem closer, and dark ceilings seem lower. Certain colours create very specific moods and this phenomenon is often taken into consideration when selecting the colour of objects.

Some materials have their own distinguishable smell. Wood for example has a particular odour that makes us associate it with nature. When we think of a wet piece of wood or a log burning, it reminds us of very precise images and feelings. Combined with a traditional Tyrolean interior these smells can compel the sensation of a tipically local atmosphere.

Smells can also tell us a lot about the age or the condition of an object.

THE SPIRIT OF WOOD

The culture and tradition of a country have a significant impact on the importance of colours. Each culture has its own symbol conventions and colour schemes conventions. The sight of the green nature, green meadows and forests are common for us in Europe and available in abundance. However, In a populace that lives in the desert, green is very special and symbolizes paradise and life-giving oases.

The colour white is so nuanced among the Eskimos that they have given her many names.

Wood also has its own colour and is associated with a particular „homeliness“, i.e. a Tyrolean “Stüberl”.

As for color the same also applies for material. In this case, today wood is sought after with a soulful nostalgia. It takes its substance from the earth, it lives, it breathes, and it works. It has a hidden heat, it shines like glass, and it burns from the inside. This material is a living being.

However, wood is more and more often reproduced from other materials. It is formally imitated and replaced by new materials. The desire for the appearance, the feel, the look, the coziness of wood remains. Real wood is increasingly becoming a luxury item.

Whoever doesn’t want, or can’t afford, wood for any reason, such as cost of maintenance reasons, can rely on imitation nowadays.

The following color palette shows that wood is no longer constrained to its typical wooden color. Production today uses a large range of colours assimilated to wood to create or recreate certain atmospheres.

Veneer wood consists of 0.3 to 6 mm thick sheets that are separated by different methods from the root edge. The word veneer was borrowed in the 16th Century by the French „fournir“ (to equip or supply). It describes the process of using less valuable wood with nobler thin wooden sheets.

Only the finest woods are used for the production of veneer; especially hardwoods. The main types here are beech and oak, each with approximately 30% of the market share. Maple has 10% of the-

market share. Birch, cherry, ash and softwoods fluctuate in a frame of 5-7% each. The main customers of veneers are the furniture industry and trade. Other customers include the interior and carpentry trade.

WPCs are melted processable composites consisting of different proportions of wood (typically wood flour), plastics and additives. They are usually processed with modern procedures of plastic technology such as extrusion, injection moulding, and rotational moulding, or by compression techniques, and also in thermoforming process.

With this process the colour is limitless. Within these products the limits of material imitations, i.e. wood and stone, seem to disappear.

Their fabrication method is based on moulding a concrete-like material.

Geopietra has developed a tested and proved system of raw materials that fulfills the requirements of modern construction and the sophisticated masonry with high aesthetic value. The Geopietra-wall is sold in a single integrated system, which includes the use of the adhesive system Geocoll, the professional installation of geopietra panels on a previously prepared base, and the processing of the two-deck mortar GeoBi. What is interesting to note is what they use as a slogan on the main page of their internet page. Geo46

pietra claims to have the most credible artificial stone in the world, „Der glaubhafteste Kunststein der Welt“.

The Geopietra-wall only ressembls a natural stone wall. Since every customer knows that they‘re buying a „fake“ stone element, there is no use in lying or pretending. What is most important to the customer is the appearence and aesthetics of it. even the reference to an original material or product gets lost.

The Geopietra company highlights values like light, breathablility, durability, small size (as their elements are only used as shells), environmental, rapid assembly, naturalness and believablity, but most importantly, a high aesthetic and emotinal quality.

For details on a facade it becomes clear that the induced notion of structural design does not necessarily correspond with the actual construction of the building.

Taking a close look at some building details reveal that many houses are using facade elements to imply that they are made of a certain material. They are simulating a type of construction, making people believe that a structure is supported by stone or by wood. Since we can’t see behind the facade, we don’t know what materials are really used for the load bearing structure, or the supporting frame.

In these examples of “Rauriser Marmor”, real stone is used although another structure is used in the structure. Here an ancient and traditional way of building is simulated not through artificial materials, but through real ones. So why are buildings not build in an honest way? We can only guess that cost effectiveness and durability have become more important than traditional construction.

SIMULACRA AND SIMULATION Jean Baudrillard

Baudrillard claims that contemporary society has replaced all reality and meaning with symbols and signs. Symbolization and signification do not conceal reality and meaning, but rather conceals the fact that reality and meaning are irrelevant to postindustrialist society.

Simulacra are significations and symbolization of culture that construct perceived reality. Baudrillard believed that society had become so saturated with simulacra that all meaning had lost meaning by being infinitely mutable. He described four stages of sign-orders: • The faithful image and copy - Here we believe that the representation is correct.

• The perversion of reality - Here the sign is an unfaithful representation of the original.

• Absence of a profound reality – here the representation pretends to be faithful, but it is a copy with no original.

• Pure simulation – Here the representation/sign bears no relationship to reality; this is a stage of hyper-reality.

He goes on to give a description of the orders of the simulacra that follows a historical order: •In the first order is clearly a place marker for the real item. It is defined as coming from the pre-industrial era.

•The second order a distinction between reality and representation begin to break down because copies are able to be mass produced. Here the products become commodities that replace the real item.

•In the third order the simulacrum precedes the original; there is no longer any distinction between reality and representation.

In consumerist society today the desires and needs produced are not based on any sort of need associated with reality, but rather simulacra constructs the belief that the need exists.

The LEGO model is a perfect analogy for the system of anonymous objects, but we need to examin more the symbolic and sign aspect of simulacrum because this is where architecture becomes ‘Tyrolean’.

Above we have an example of each type of piece that comes in the LEGO Tirolerhaus. Another model, the ‘Spanish Villa’, uses identical pieces. The comparison chart shows us that not every single piece is used in each model, but most are.

An examination of real houses will show that there are also elements that can be extruded and catalogued in a similar way.

Tirolia Blockhaus

Tirolia Blockhaus is a company that builds prefabricated, or predesigned homes. Like many of the products we examined before, it uses ‚Tirol‘ in it‘s name. It‘s houses demonstrate an interpretation of Tirolean Architecture.

Here are two houses produced by Tirolia. One is an ‚Alpen Style‘ house and the other is a modern refinement of the former. Some sort of evolution took place between these houses, in the same way Baudrillard stages the simulacra. On the next page we can see a genetic progression of several Tirolia homes.

From the beginning ‚Alpen Style‘ home, to the modern renditions we can see traditional elements, perhaps formed out of necessity, such as cold weather, abundance of wood and stone, and structural knowledge several hundred years, into the modern rendition that maintains the elements, but no longer out of the same necessities or circumstances.

Do elements specific to the houses Tirolia produces have any correlation with other houses found in Tyrol? Baudrillard argues in The System of Objects that the code of advertising creates a network of sings that articulate a hierarchy of value, and symbolism of meaning. I would like to take it a step further. The tectonic elements, whether or not they are authentic, reenforce themselves through repetition, and in their repetition and self reference begin to vaguely define Tirolean architecture.

This first image has two stories marked on the facade. The bottom is a solid stereotomic white.

The top has wood clad walls. Beams, doubled up articulate the overhang of the roof. And the roof is gabled. There is a balcony jutting out of the second floor, and the openings are articulated in wood.

The second foto also has two stories demarked on the facade; the bottom the white stereotomic solid; the top clad in wood. The roof is not gabled, but beams articulate the bottom side of the overhang.

The chart on the next page marks these elements on six different types of buildings found in Tyrol.

What we can see from all this evidence is that there are characteristics that are repeated in Tyrolean architecture. What isn‘t so obvious is that these elements are somewhat arbitrary in themselves.

While the elements remain vague, and on a visceral level may hint toward a feeling that the homes are characteristically Tyrolean, the most direct identification of these elements is the branding that they take on. Even the anamorphed modern houses are considered Tirolean because it is the company‘s name, Tirolia, that imbues the houses with a sense of being Tyrolian.

A Life Sized Model

In the same way that a lego model might contain several structures that make up a minuature city, this rest stop along the highway at the boarder of Tirol and Vorarlberg contains several facade models that simulate a small town courtyard.

Several styles of houses are built side by side, but they are all one building covered by a glass roof. A modern sliding doors lead into the central courtyard where you can sit and eat some Tyrolean food, or enjoy a coffee. A fake watermill is built into the wall, which is covered by a plastic seal to protect the wall from water entering. It is spun by an electric motor. A hole in the side of the rock wall shows that it is only an imitation. Down below the bathrooms walls are covered in generic white tile, but the doors are made out of wood.

It is only a representation made to identify characteristics that are seemingly Tyrolean. This is an example of simulacrum brought to the level of absurdity. Not only is it notibly fake, but even it‘s purpose is a constructed need because it sits along a highway. No one by foot would enter, but rather it is only a stopping point for the motorway infrastructure. Why does it need to be clad in Tyrolean Kitsch? This is a doorway into Tyrol. It declares what there is to see in Tyrol from a touristic point of view. It holds no resemblance to the social housing blocks or modernized homes where most Tyroleans live. Nor does it even maintain the contextual elements that define space in a Tirolean village. The mountains are hidden behind the false facades; no streets enter or leave the central courtyard. It is simply an ideal image of what Tyrol believes itself to have once been.

CONCLUSION

On the following page begins a story about a father and daughter putting together a model Enzian house. The house is named after a plant that only grows in the alps, Enzian. In the story they are discussing elements of the house. The father tells his daughter that the elements of the house are all the same, but that it is up to each individual determining how to put it together that makes it unique. He later goes on to tell her that the model they are building is a new edition, and that each edition of the model comes with improvements.

As they complete the model, the daughter tells the father that something is missing from the model that she has seen on all the old houses in the area: the antena.

This story is an allegory of the simulacra house.

Similar elements can be found, but each house retains some individuality according to how the builder finalizes the plans. Over the years the model homes are improved. And inevitably they accessorize pieces of global infrastructure, like the antena.

We began our investigation asking if a formula could be extrapolated from regional architecture that may give us a clue to its essence. Instead we found that no formula exists, but rather a catalogue, or taxonomy of recognizable elements that vaguely refer to historical construction; although, they could also be found other places around the world. Finally, what makes the home identifiably Tyrolean is actually an artificial system of advertising and branding. In the end, there is no real Tyrolean architecture, but that is besides the point.

It seems that the local culture has accepted the simulacra as an identifier and standard of their local environment.

O.: Richtig, stimmt. Western Germany gibts längst nicht mehr, das ist ja schon Geschichte, weißt du, oder ein Märchen, eine Fantasie, so wie dieses Hausmodell auch eine Fantasie ist, leider eine sehr wirkliche.

Otto Kapfinger: Onkel Arno hat was zum Basteln geschickt! Wollen wir das gemeinsam machen?

Mira Kapfinger (Tochter): Gut Papi. Bringst du den UHU? Wofür ist das eigentlich, dieses EnzianHaus?

O.: Das ist für die Dekoration von Modelleisenbahnen oder für sogenannte Dioramen.

M.: Aber Papi, für deine kleinen Dia-Rahmen ist dieses Häuschen doch viel zu groß!

O.: Nein, nein, du verwechselst das. Durch die Dias schickt man Licht durch, und an der Wand entsteht ein Bild. Was ich meinte, sind Landschaften, die entweder lebensgroß oder stark verkleinert in Ausschnitten nachgebaut werden und hinter Glasscheiben aufgestellt werden, und wo das Gebaute im Hintergrund in Gemaltes übergeht.

M.: Ist das so wie bei den Schaukästen, die wir im Haus der Natur in Salzburg gesehen haben?

O.: Genau so. Übrigens, wie gefällt dir dieses Haus Enzian?

M.: Na ja, so so. Die alten Bauernhäuser, die wir in Vorarlberg besucht haben, die sind schon schöner.

Ich möchte jedenfalls die Teile kleben, und du kannst sie mir vorher richtig zusammenstellen. Hast du jetzt endlich den UHU? O.: Gut, aber mit den Häusern im Bregenzerwald hat das hier nichts zu tun. Es ist mehr eine Fantasiemischung aus Einzelteilen von den alten tirolerisch-

M.: Aber Papi, die richtigen Bauernhäuser waren doch viel größer. Ich meine, da ist doch immer vorne in der Mitte der Eingang, oder an der Seite in der Mitte, und neben der Tür sind immer rechts und links mindestens zwei, oft auch drei Fenster, und hinten der Stall und das Plumpsklo - bei den ganz alten.

O.: Richtig, mein Adlerauge, das ist ja eben das Problem bei diesem und bei vielen ähnlichen Häuschen, die erst viel später entstanden sind, als die alten Höfe. Es sind sozusagen Miniaturausgaben ihrer Vorbilder. Und darum ist daran alles so eigenartig, so niedlich, so zwergenhaft.

M.: Zwergenhäuser sind doch schön, aber noch viel kleiner. Erinnerst du dich, was ich mit meiner Kusine letztes Jahr im Wald unter dem großen Wurzelstock gebaut habe?

O.: Sicher, doch das war etwas ganz anderes, für richtige Zwerge, und nicht für Menschen, die sich als Zwerge fühlen oder als solche verkleiden.

M.: Oh, jetzt haben wir leider einen Fehler gemacht! Auf der Verpackung hat das Haus weiße Fenster nur im oberen Stock. Und wir haben jetzt auch ebenerdig weiße Fenster eingebaut, und überhaupt hast du auch auf das Fensterglas vergessen!

O.: Das macht nichts. Im Gegenteil. Ich finde es richtig gut. Weißt du, Onkel Arno hat uns das geschickt, nicht nur zum sturen Nachbauen, sondern daß wir dabei etwas lernen, daß wir uns dazu unsere eigene Meinung bilden und vielleicht eine Möglichkeit finden, mit den vorgebenen Bausteinen so zu arbeiten, daß dieses Häuschen wirklich unser eigenes, ganz besonderes wird. Und da dachte ich mir, können wir zum Beispiel ruhig das Glas weglassen, damit einmal so richtig Luft hineinkommt und dieser Enzian richtig gut durchgelüftet wird.

M.: Na gut Papi. Aber mit den Fensterrahmen müssen wir schon genau sein. Und jetzt hast du es sogar falsch eingesetzt, quer statt hoch, das geht nicht, das geht ja gar nicht auf, so ein Fenster gibts ja gar nicht bei den alten Häusern!

O.: Schau mein Kind: Vielleicht können wir es so verstehen, daß wir dieses Hausmodell, das eine zusammengestückelte Miniatur von Einzelheiten alter Bauernhäuser ist - obwohl es natürlich kein Bauernhaus ist, sondern ein Wohnhaus für irgendeine Arbeiter- oder Angestelltenfamilie -, vielleicht können wir das ein ganz klein wenig moderner machen.

M.:

Was meinst du damit?

O.: Nun, wir müssen da gar nicht viel tun, wir müssen ja nicht gleich das Dach verkehrtherum draufkleben oder das Haus in der Diagonale auseinanderreißen. Wir setzen einfach die Fenster quer statt hoch. Das geht ganz leicht, und man merkt es fast nicht. Doch wer ein zweites Mal hinschaut, wird sofort sehen, daß es doch auch ein bißchen modern ist.

Meinst du nicht?

M.: Schon, - in der Schule dürften wir sowas aber nicht machen, im Werkunterreicht schon gar nicht. Da muß alles immer ganz genau nach der Vorlage nachgemacht werden. Also wenn du unbedingt willst...

O.: Schau Kind, wir erklären es Onkel Arno - wenn er danach fragt oder vielleicht ungehalten ist, wir erklären es so: Wir machen es so, wie die Natur es selbst tun würde. Du hast das ja schon gelernt, jedenfalls haben wir darüber in den schönen Büchern über die Dinosaurier und die Elefanten schon gelesen. In der Natur gibt es keine zwei völlig gleichen Dinge, auch wenn sich viele sehr ähnlich sehen. Ein Elefantenbaby ist nicht die exakte Kopie seiner Vorlage - also seiner Mami und seines Papi. Das Baby übernimmt wohl fast alle Einzelheiten seines Körpers, seines Aussehens und seines Charakters von seinen Eltern. Doch die Natur macht es so, daß sie von sich aus viele kleine Veränderungen dazugibt. Und das sind eigentlich immer Verbesserungen. Das heißt zum Beispiel, wenn die Eltern gut genährt waren, wird auch das kleine, wenn es groß geworden ist, ein wenig größer, kräftiger und stärker sein als seine Eltern.

M.: Ja Papi, ich verstehe. So war es doch auch bei den Schmetterlingen, die wir in einem anderen Buch gesehen haben. Die haben sich sehr rasch an die

Veränderung ihrer Umgebung angepaßt, - du weißt ja, die Umweltverschmutzung -, sodaß jetzt Schmetterlinge, die vorher hellbraun waren, in bestimmten Gegenden jetzt dunkelbraun sind, damit sie sich auf den dunkler gewordenen Ästen und Baumstämmen wieder richtig tarnen können.

O.: Sehr gut, du supergescheite Tochter. Das nennt man die Evolution, die intelligente Weiterentwicklung der Natur. So reagieren die Tiere aber auch Pflanzen auf veränderte Bedingungen, sie lernen daraus, bilden sich weiter, Schritt für Schritt, lassen das alte zurück, wenn es nicht mehr optimal paßt, geben diese Erfahrung an ihre Kinder weiter und immer so weiter.

Und bei den Menschen und ihren Häusern sollte es doch auch so sein. Leider machen die Menschen immer alles komplizierter, als es von Natur aus wäre.

M.: Wenn ich an meine Schulhefte mit den vorgedruckten Rechenbeispielen denke: die waren im letzten Jahr so urkompliziert, daß ich dabei das Multiplizieren und Addieren fast wieder verlernt habe.

O.: Siehst du, aber bei dieser kleinen HäuschenHausaufgabe, die uns Onkel Arno geschickt hat, machen wir es lieber nicht zu kompliziert. Wir machen es einfacher. Wir machen mit dem Material dieses Baukastens so gut es geht ein paar kleine, evolutionäre Veränderungen, Verbesserungen vielleicht, damit Onkel Arno sieht, daß wir nicht nachbauen, ohne nachzudenken, sondern auch ein wenig mitdenken. Leider sind bei diesem Modell ein paar Mißbildungen dran, die eigentlich Fehlentwicklungen sind, richtige Degenerationen, und keine Evolutionen, und die können wir gar nicht ändern.

M.: Was meinst du damit? Diese komische Grundplatte, oder ist es etwas wirklich Ernstes?

O.: Schau einmal auf die Linie, wo der hölzerne Oberstock auf dem weiß verputzten Mauerwerk des Erdgeschosses aufsitzt. Da siehst du auf allen vier Seiten so kleine braune Zäpfchen nach unten herausstehen - wir mußten das, verbunden mit dünnen Stäbchen, extra rundherum ankleben: Das sollen die vorderen Enden jener Holzbalken sein, welche die Decke über dem Erdgeschoß bilden. Aber so wie hier dargestellt, ist das völlig falsch. Wenn überhaupt, dann könnten die Deckenbalken, die immer über die kürzere Hausseite gespannt sind, nur an zwei gegenüberliegenden Seiten herausschauen. Das Modell zeigt da etwas, was ganz unlogisch ist, also nicht eine Konstruktion, sondern ein irreführendes, vergröbertes

M.: Aber Papi, erstens ist das nur ein Modell, und zweitens sieht das doch jedes Kind. Da hätten wir diese Zierleisten ja gleich weglassen können, und das hätte Onkel Arno auch besser gefallen.

O.: Stimmt, aber wir haben uns so viel Mühe damit gemacht, wir lassen es. Manchmal muß man auch Fehler machen, damit man daraus was lernen kann. Das macht die Natur auch so. Nur aus Fehlern wird man klug.

M.: Wenn ich mir das noch einmal genau ansehe, dann wirken diese Balken so knapp über den Türen und Fenstern ja urkomisch.

O.: Natürlich, mein Kind, der Streifen massiver Wand, der zwischen Balken und Tür übrig bleibt, ist dünner als der Balken selbst. Und sogar dein statisch und konstruktiv noch ungeschultes Auge merkt einfach, daß da was nicht stimmen kann. Ich zeige dir noch ein solches falsches Detail. Bei den Bauernhäusern hat man für die Balkone einfach die Deckenbalken etwas über die Außenwände vorstehen lassen, sodaß sie die Balkone tragen. Bei diesem Modell sind etwas über der angedeuteten Zimmerdecke nochmals wuchtige eigene Tragbalken angesetzt, - eine ganz unsinnige Lösung. Niemand würde das in Wirklichkeit so bauen.

M.: Achtung Papi! Das Aufkleben der Balkongeländer ist ziemlich schwierig, und ich glaube, wir haben da wieder einen Fehler gemacht. Können wir diese Geländer nicht weglassen. Das Ganze ist ja furchtbar eng, und man sieht auch nicht mehr richtig hinaus.

O.: Gute Idee, aber irgendein Geländer muß sein, und das meiste haben wir ja schon gemacht. Eine Möglichkeit wäre,die Fenstergläser, die wir nicht verwendet haben, als Balkonbrüstungen einzusetzen.

Das wäre auch modern, eleganter und zweckmäßiger und auch so eine kleine, evolutionäre Veränderung.

In Wirklichkeit könnte es Mattglas sein. Aber unsere Glasstücke sind zu kurz. Wir machen es vielleicht nur an einer Stelle.

M.: Ja gut! Dort wo die Stiege außen hinaufgeht, da ist es doch so eng, da wäre das Glas am besten! Übrigens, ist das die einzige Stiege in den ersten Stock hinauf? Das ist doch sehr umständlich?

O.: Ich weiß es nicht. Über die innere Einteilung des Hauses sagt das Modell gar nichts aus. Wir könnten

aus der Lage der Fenster und Türen und des Schornsteins - und auch aus den Vorhängen und Gardinen, die wir ja auch nicht hinter die Fenster geklebt haben -, wir könnten daraus ein paar Vermutungen anstellen.

Im Detektiv-Spielen bis du doch schon geübt. Aber ich denke, daß die Hersteller dieses Modells auch darüber nicht viel nachgedacht haben. Mit den stumpf zusammengeklebten Elementen - alles aus ein und demselben Plastik, sodaß Holz, Verputz und Metall ganz gleich aussehen -, mit so einem Modell will man einfach ein nettes, niedliches Bild von einem Haus wiedergeben. Es ist nur ein Bild, eine Kulisse, die mit einem wirklichen Haus nicht viel zu tun hat.

M.: Sicher Papi, und außerdem ist es ja nur ein Spielzeug. Vielleicht nimmst du das viel zu wichtig.

O.: Ja schon. Leider wird so ein Modell, so ein Bild von einem Haus tausendfach verkauft, und die Leute mögen es auch, weil es so niedlich ist und sie nicht so genau hinsehen wie du und ich. Andererseits ist diese putzige Anhäufung von Fehlern und rein bildhaften Motiven leider auch ein getreuer Spiegel vieler tausender wirklich gebauter Häuser, die auch weniger von innen heraus gedacht oder logisch und modern konstruiert worden sind. Dieses Modell - so falsch es in vielen Punkten ist, wie wir gesehen haben - ist also keine Täuschung. Es enthält ganz viel Wahrheit. Es ist so kulissenhaft wie die meisten Häuschen auch, die wirklich in unserem Land herumstehen.

M.: Das Wichtigste fehlt aber bei diesem EnzianHaus, und das ist wirklich arg. Auch bei den ältesten Häusern in Vorarlberg und auf den niedlichsten, neuen Klein-Bauernhäuschen im Wienerwald oder in Salzburg, ist das Wichtigste immer oben drauf - die Fernsehantenne, oder die Satelitenschüssel. Die Reststücke von dem ganzen Modellbausatz haben mich gleich an Fernsehantennen erinnert. Könnten wir nicht ein Stück davon oben aufs Dach kleben?

O.: Wunderbar, du allerklügste Tochter. Wir kleben es einfach an den Schornstein.

M.: Papi, meine Freundin fragt, ob sie uns beim Einpacken helfen darf.

O.: Okay, sie soll nur kommen, Und dir vielen Dank noch für die geduldige Hilfe.
