Fall is in the Air If there’s one thing I know about San Antonio it’s this: We LOVE fall! In October the weather cools yet we still don’t need coats like our friends on the East Coast. It’s a wonderful time for outdoor dining and activities. Gee, that sounds like an invitation to visit the River Walk, doesn’t it?

The second reason we love fall is because of Halloween. San Antonio is packed with people who love haunted spots, folklore and legends of the spooky variety. This issue is filled with stories about celebrating the holiday all month long; from theme parks and cemeteries to haunted houses and lingering spirits. Regardless of your fear-tolerance level we have an event that’s sure to please.

But this October 16-18th gives us a new reason to love the fall. Our city will celebrate, in a big way, the official induction of the five San Antonio Missions to World Heritage status as conferred upon them by UNESCO. For details see our feature story Mission Accomplished!

So as I write this column in the heat of the summer and dream fondly of the upcoming October weather, Halloween mischief and mission celebrations, I encourage you to check out my personal top 10 list of urban legends and haunted places.

On the River Walk, a fallen leaf is nothing more than a summer’s way of saying “Hasta la Vista! – I’ll see you again soon!”

Like a shimmering 10-mile-long ribbon, the San Antonio River connects five exquisite pearls of Spanish colonial architecture, and now that priceless strand shines with a new luster for all the world to see.

It took almost a decade of diligence for San Antonio’s Spanish colonial missions to finally earn World Heritage site status from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). That recent decision made the missions the only World Heritage site in Texas among 23 in the U. S. and slightly more than 1,000 worldwide. The missions thus joined other icons of cultural or historical significance such as the Great Wall of China, India’s Taj Mahal and England’s Stonehenge.

Included in the designation are the Alamo, or Mission San Antonio de Valero, not far from the River Walk in downtown San Antonio, and four missions along the river south of the city – Concepciόn, San José, San Juan and Espada – that still serve as Catholic parishes. Satellite properties include Rancho de las Cabras (or goat ranch) farther south near Floresville that was associated with Mission Espada and the Espada Aqueduct, a still-functioning water delivery system near Mission San Juan. Generally speaking, the missions are open daily except for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day at no charge, and tours of the ruins and grasslands at the 100-acre goat ranch are available by reservation only.

By the late 17th century, New Spain had thwarted French incursion into eastern Texas, and, after the Spanish Crown withdrew financial and military support, the East Texas missions were closed and relocated. Their heyday in spreading Christianity among native peoples peaked at roughly the same time frame as the formation of the United States of America along the Atlantic coast and the French settlement of Canada and Louisiana. Regarding the decline of the missions, Spain was now worried about the Russians on the West Coast, and the British, and concentrated their efforts and resources on expanding the California mission system. The indigenous population had also become decimated by epidemics of the period.

Mission San Antonio de Valero built 1718 Mission San José built 1720

The Spanish left behind five unique structures, the largest concentration of Catholic mission churches in North America: Mission San Antonio de Valero (1718) – Its iconic chapel façade in downtown San Antonio will always be remembered for the Battle of the Alamo on March 6, 1836, when Texians fighting for their independence were overwhelmed by the Mexican army commanded by Gen. Antonio Lόpez de Santa Anna. The Alamo was already more than a century old when the clash occurred.

The Long Barrack, the oldest structure on the premises at almost 300 years, houses the Alamo Museum that’s filled with reminders of the battle as well as an interpretive exhibit –“The Alamo: A Story Bigger Than Texas.” Visitors can roam the grounds on their own or take a 45-minute audio tour, or they can book a group tour. Mission San Juan built 1731

Mission San José (1720) – About five miles south of the Alamo, Mission San José is the largest of San Antonio’s missions. Local Indians under Spanish direction built “The Queen of the Missions,” including a granary and gristmill, out of limestone and colorful stucco. Agricultural fields and grazing land for livestock around the mission at one time accommodated more than 300 Indians.

Mission San José features the 7-foot-tall, ornate stained-glass “Rose Window,” hand-carved wooden statues of saints and stone carvings among its works of art. Today it houses the visitor center for the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park that multiple times a day screens Gente de Razόn, a video production about the native inhabitants of South Texas and their role in the colonization of New Spain. Mission San Juan (1731) – Surrounding farmland provided the inhabitants with fresh produce, and the surplus helped supply the region. In addition, the mission’s workshops manufactured clothing as well as wood, metal and leather goods. The bell tower and chapel continue in use today.

Mission Concepciόn built 1731

Mission Concepciόn (1731) – Looking much as it did when it was dedicated in 1755, the chapel stands as the only unrestored stone church in the U. S. Exterior geometric designs have faded, however original frescoes can still be seen in some rooms. Concepciόn also includes a partially completed, more-elaborate church begun in 1772 and abandoned 14 years later when the mission’s population decreased.

Mission Espada (1731) – In addition to a beautiful chapel, the mission contains the best-preserved portion of an acequia, or irrigation system used to water nearby crops such as corn, cotton, pumpkins, beans and melons. The compound also includes workshops for spinning yarn and weaving garments, a kiln for producing bricks and a blacksmith shop for metalworking.

Mission Espada built 1731

The missions’ rise to greater prominence can be traced to 1975 when the Mission Parkway earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places.

Three years later, the federal government authorized creation of the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park and opened it on April 1, 1983.

The push for World Heritage status began in 2006 at the urging of the San Antonio Conservation Society and steadily gained momentum thanks to strong community-wide support from both public and private organizations.

In June 2011, at ceremonies celebrating progress on the Mission Reach Ecosystem Restoration and Recreation Project along the San Antonio River south of the city, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar indicated the missions might be good candidates for international recognition.

The Federal Register that year invited World Heritage nominations, which ignited a grassroots campaign by the National Parks Conservation Association that generated 18,000 letters of support.

Salazar returned to San Antonio the following June and announced the missions would indeed be nominated as a World Heritage site. That touched off an intense effort to submit the detailed nomination package by the January 2014 deadline. First, the federal government scrutinized it, then UNESCO, and this past July, the long-awaited announcement came at the 39th annual session of the World Heritage Convention in Bonn, Germany.

What will World Heritage status mean for the missions and San Antonio?

Officials say Americans aren’t as knowledgeable about World Heritage

sites as their neighbors abroad, who are expected to descend upon San Antonio in greater and greater numbers. Some believe the economic impact could reach $100 million in the next 10 to 20 years.

To prepare for this influx, training will be made available to tour guides in the interest of consistency in conveying the missions’ history and significance to the world, and new World Heritage signs will appear to direct visitors, who can access the various missions by motor vehicle or bicycle via Mission Reach hike-and-bike trails.

Additional emphasis will be focused on communicating the uniqueness of each mission and on protecting the structures for future generations of visitors. There’s also talk of opening a missions interpretive exhibit at the University of Texas at San Antonio’s Institute of Texan Cultures located downtown in the shadow of the Tower of the Americas.

In the near term, the various organizations that contributed time, money and other kinds of support to the World Heritage designation will stage a huge celebration Oct. 16-18, and everyone is invited. Details can be found at www.MissionsofSanAntonio.org.

It took years of hard work by countless dedicated people in achieving a challenging goal – to convince UNESCO that San Antonio’s treasured missions deserve World Heritage recognition and to elevate the Alamo City’s stature as a world-class destination.

We’ve got spirits, yes we do! q By Carole Miller r

Welcome to San Antonio where people are dying to get a good room...and some have never left.

Kindred spirits gather at the Menger Hotel The historic Menger Hotel is undoubtedly the most haunted in San Antonio. At least 32 different spirits call the Menger Hotel their home-away-from-home. These ghostly guests have been seen by many generations of witnesses since the hotel opened in 1859.

One such entity is Sally White, the Menger’s most famous employee who worked as a maid in the late 1800s. Sally’s husband 34

was known for being big, bullheaded and extremely jealous. One fateful night he came to the hotel and accused her of cheating. He caused such a ruckus that the police had to be called to calm him down. Sally was afraid to go home so she slept on courthouse steps that night. When she finally got home early the next morning, he was waiting for her with a gun. She ran to the fire station behind the Alamo but he caught up with her and shot her three times. She died the next day from her

wounds and, since she had no other family, the Menger staff paid the $32 for her burial.

They say her spirit was so moved and grateful by the gesture that she continues to return to help out. Her ghostly figure, wearing her dark, drab uniform has been seen many times walking down the hallways carrying towels to guests even in the afterlife.

fashioned nightgowns who take delight in tickling the feet of the living and King Ranch founder Captain Richard King who has been seen haunting his former haunt, the King Suite, going right through the wall where the door used to be located.

The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak at Sheraton Gunter Hotel A female apparition appears in the sixth floor hallway and strange noises emanate from the

area of what used to be room 636. A pale woman with outstretched arms has been seen standing in the room. And one holiday season a ghostly figure appeared in the developed, holiday party photos of a hotel employee.

Who is this ghostly lady and why does she haunt the halls of the Sheraton Gunter Hotel?

This true story goes back to February 1965 when Albert Knox and his beautiful blond companion checked in to room 636 at the Gunter Hotel. They were seen coming and going for the next few days. One afternoon the “Do Not Disturb” sign was still hanging on the door after several days. The maid assumed the occupants had forgotten to take it off, opened the door and entered the room.

What she saw was so horrific it paralyzed her with fear. The floors, walls and bed were covered in blood. There was a man standing next to the bed. As she let out a bloodcurdling scream, the man calmly placed a finger upon his lips, shushing her. Then he grabbed the bloody sheets off the bed and ran.

When the police arrived, they found a .22 caliber bullet shell on the bed and a slug in the wall near a bloody chair, footprints in blood on the floor, strands of blonde hair, nylon stockings and lingerie along with empty bottles of wine, olives and cheese. (Other versions of the story involve a meat-grinder.)

Detectives speculated the bloody footprints were made by someone making several trips to the bathroom in order to dismember the body of the victim in the bathtub. They also

The staff knows all the stories and love to share a tale or two served up with a liberal dose of libations.

Meanwhile, a security guard down the street at the St. Anthony Hotel was becoming suspicious of a guest in room 536 who refused to allow maids in his room and called the police. As the police burst in the door, the occupant shot himself in the temple and died instantly.

The dead man’s fingerprints matched those found in the Gunter Hotel’s bloody room 636. But, to this day, the body of the blonde woman has never been found, no blonde woman has ever been reported missing and the case remains open to this day.

In good spirits at the St. Anthony Not surprisingly, Room 536 the St. Anthony Hotel, where Walter Emerick committed suicide after allegedly murdering his mistress at the Gunter Hotel down the street, is rumored to be haunted by a ghostly figure.

But Emerick is not the only spirit who inhabits the St. Anthony Hotel. The St. Anthony is rumored to be home-sweet-home to a plethora of other phantoms. And these spirits are literally celebrated with spirits in the Haunt Bar on the first floor of this luxurious haunt. All the drinks on the menu are named after the various otherworldly inhabitants.

This place is a ghost town While some San Antonio hotels embrace and celebrate their hauntedness, many of the staff of others are reluctant to speak of spirits.

Some other reportedly haunted hotels in downtown San Antonio include the Emily Morgan Hotel, named after Santa Anna’s seductress, who was also referred to as the “Yellow Rose of Texas,” the Crockett Hotel, named after Davy Crockett and built on the former bloody battlegrounds of the Alamo, the Crowne Plaza and Inn on the Riverwalk.

Chupacabra - Literally meaning “goat-sucker” because they attack livestock and drink their blood have been cited in San Antonio.

Some disbelievers consider it a contemporary legend while others think it is the lineage of an extinct dog-like mammal with mange.

Luche Libre - “Free wrestling” is a form of professional wrestling in Spanish-speaking countries characterized by colorful masks and costumes. To outsiders, their masked faces, bulging muscles and rapid maneuvers in the ring can be, well, frightening.

Ghost Tracks - An unverified story of a 1930’s school bus with 10 children aboard was struck by a train. The legend says those children haunt the tracks to protect others. Park your car on the track, shift into neutral, and the children push your car to safety.

Sprinkle powder on the back bumper and you will see the children’s handprints.

Donkey Lady - Half-donkey and half-human creature, she lurks

around San Antonio’s south side. Some say she is a ghost others alive. A second version of the story says the woman drowned at today she haunts the bridge at the end of Jett Rd. before Applewhite Rd. Honking on the bridge will get her to appear.

Terrell Hills Ghost - Dr. Ross bought his family home in

Terrell Hills. He lost a large sum in the stock market and blamed his broker. Public ridicule drove him to shoot the broker and his family.

After Ross’ passing the home’s light began turning off and on, doors open and close and Ross’ footsteps can be heard.

Silverghost Tours - For over a decade storyteller, Randy Felts has led countless walking tours blending history, culture and ghost stories to show 500 years of San Antonio’s dark history. Join him for a 90-minute, 1-mile Ghosts & Legends walking tour starting at 9pm.

Fat Farm - A doctor opened a “fat farm” in San Antonio where people, mostly teens, would go to get help losing weight. He literally starved people…to death. Those ghosts haunt the ruined building located up 281 North outside of Loop 1604.

Empanada Man - Beloved 1940’s Empanada Man baked and sold hot empanadas always saving one for a different child. One child went out of town to attend college. Years later while visiting home Mr Empanada gave her one. Her mother felt the hot pie and told her he died several years earlier.

Sheraton Gunter Hotel - One-hour ghost tour of the hotel

offered only October 27-31. Veteran ghost hunter, Guillermo Fuentes, spent eight years studying the mysteries of the Gunter Hotel. can be purchased online through Amazon.com or at many local used book stores. The book was originally published in 1997 and recounts the numerous folklore, legends and stories leading up to ghost sightings and the presence of spirits throughout San Antonio.

SeaWorld San Antonio is home to a horror themed Howl-OScream event every weekend in October. Featuring a wide range of events and specialty shows, it’s so frightful it may just not be suitable for guests of all ages.

SEGUIN Terror is much too strong of a word for Morgan’s Wonderland Halloween experience. Fun with a little trick-or-treat candy on the side sound seems like a delightful fit.

Morgan’s Wonderland, in San Antonio, celebrates by featuring a More Delightful than Frightful Halloween event.

Visitors to the park are encouraged to drop off three nonperishable food items, per person, between October 1st and October 30th, to receive free admission for the Halloween festivities. Tickets can also be purchased for $5.00 per person. All food items, as well as a portion of the proceeds, will benefit the San Antonio Food Bank. This event will take place on October 31st from 5 to 9pm. Participants are encouraged to wear delightful-not-frightful Halloween costumes for a safe night of trickor-treating. In addition, guests can enjoy face painting, as well as rides and attractions.

DELIGHTFUL

The park, designed for children and adults with special cognitive and physical needs, opened 5 years ago, and was developed by a local real estate developer whose daughter Morgan, has a severe cognitive delay. Guests with special needs never pay admission.

Completely wheelchair-accessible, the park features more than 25 elements and attractions including rides, playgrounds, gardens, an eight-acre fishing lake, 18,000-square-foot special-event center, 575-seat amphitheater, picnic area and rest areas throughout the park. Haunted Cemeteries

No Rest for (some) of the Dead

Haunted cemetery stories are synonymous with October. But in a handful of San Antonio cemeteries ghosts and mysterious figures have been seen by too many people around specific burial grounds to simply ignore the hairraising phenomena.

The Loma China Cemetery, also known as the Chinese Graveyard, is on the right on S. Zarzamora Road, about 2-miles south of I-35 North, just past Loop 410. Legend has it that in the 1850’s two teen lovers, who would hang out in the old cemetery, were killed by lightening during an angry storm.

The Hispanic boy’s family owned the land. The girl was Chinese. Neither family approved of the relationship, so they spent time together hiding out in the old cemetery. After the young lovers died, the families refused to bury the children in adjacent graves, thus cementing their ghostly fate.

As the story goes, the two were forced to “walk the grounds” to be together. To this day motorists will pull into the narrow drive in front of the cemetery at night and flash their headlights 5 times.

The flashing lights “awaken” the spirits and motorists report hearing voices, seeing the ghostly figures of a boy and a girl floating across the grounds, and watching as a white mist spreads across the property.

Across town, the patients and staff of Christus Santa Rosa Hospital report seeing figures in Milam Park, across from the hospital on Commerce Street between Santa Rosa and San Saba Roads in downtown San Antonio.

In the 1840s the park was actually a catholic burial ground. But it proved to be too small to accommodate burials as San Antonio began to grow. By the early 1850s burials were moved to cemeteries on the East side of the city. According to Brad Klinge, producer of Discovery Channel’s Ghost Lab, the headstones were removed but the bodies remained in the ground.

In the mid-1880s City Council created “Milam Park.” It is those bodies that reportedly rise up at night to walk through the square.

Another haunted cemetery is adjacent to Stinson Municipal Field, some 15 minutes south of the city’s central business district. Visitors to San Jose Burial Park Cemetery report seeing blue lights twinkling above some of the graves.

The lights are said to be visible from the highway as folks drive by the graveyard.

Ghost hunter Brad Klinge tells of spirits seen among the headstones at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery on Harry Wurzbach Road, about 14 minutes from downtown San Antonio.

The specters are often wearing WWI military uniforms.

They move among the headstones, appear to talk among themselves, but disappear when approached by visitors. They are seen at all hours of the day and night.

The Davenport Cemetery is a small, private cemetery with thirteen graves. It is located about two miles west of Selma, Texas, on Evans Road, thirty-five minutes from San Antonio. The first body was buried there in 1852. The last was buried in 1934.

One grave sits outside the main cluster of 12 plots. Reportedly one of Davenport’s daughters is buried in that plot. She was the “black sheep” of the family. A wild child. The family was shocked and outraged by her behavior and did not want her buried close to them.

To this day people report seeing a woman wandering through the cemetery, “visiting” the other graves where her family members are buried. The assumption is it’s the ghost of the ostracized daughter.

On the city’s east side, off Houston Street, Dignowity Park has some of the oldest headstones in the city – many dating back to the mid-1830s. Neighbors report seeing spirits floating through the grounds.

Cemeteries are not the only places said to be haunted in San Antonio. There are many buildings and sites that are also reportedly haunted. They include the Emily Morgan Hotel, The Menger Hotel, The Alamodome, the Alamo, The Institute of Texan Cultures, the McNay Art Museum, Victoria’s Black Swan Inn, the Ghost Tracks, Mission San José, the Cadillac Bar, and many other buildings.

As Ghost hunter Brad Klinge puts it, San Antonio is known for its ghosts.
