Boudro’s features a few new items on their menu including shrimp and grits, a Gulf shellfish platter complete with a crawfish pie and the achiote rubbed double rib lamb chop. Recent menu additions include vegetarian and vegan selections. Of course many of the longtime favorites remain including smoked shrimp, Gulf crab enchiladas, mesquite grilled Texas quail, blackened prime rib in addition to an award winning wine list.

Boudro’s is the place for a River Walk dinner cruise! Offered nightly, the dinner cruises feature a pre fixe menu that accommodates individual or group reservations.

original unveiling by inventor Dean Kamen in 2001. While it may have not revolutionized the world the way Mr. Kamen envisioned, the Segway has definitely made an impact on how tourists experience San Antonio.

Almost since the invention of the Segway, SegCity Segway Tours has been in business at its downtown San Antonio location. Fast-forward to over 10 years later, SegCity offers a variety of 6 guided Segway tours aimed at showcasing the rich history of downtown San Antonio. Tourists and locals alike can explore the sights for the first time or even rediscover them from an exhilarating new perspective: zipping around on two wheels at up to 12.5 miles per hour!

The name Segway is a play on the word segue, meaning a smooth transition between topics. If you’ve ever experienced gliding effortlessly on a Segway as a means of transportation, you’ll agree the name is quite appropriate.

Though they may seem tricky to maneuver, Segways really couldn’t be simpler. Its two wheels are actually powered by virtual gyroscopes. This makes the Segway, once turned on, a self-balancing machine. The rider is able to stand on the platform, no differently than on the ground and the speed is controlled by leaning one’s body forward or back. The steering works by dipping the handlebars left and right, much like a joystick. After a short training session with one of their guides you are off to check out various sites such as the San Fernando Cathedral, La Villita, the southern portion of the River Walk, beautiful Victorian-era homes in the King William District and of course, a stop at the Alamo!

Most tours offered at SegCity range from one to two-and-half hours. Reservations are recommended as the guide to rider ratio is limited for tour quality and safety. Choose the longer tours for lots of sightseeing, or select the one-hour tour for just riding. Frozen Concoctions Keeping San Antonio Summers Cool

San Antonio is a hot tourist destination in more ways than one. Summer temperatures can reach the sizzling 100s here. On days like these, even the relative cool of the River Walk, with its lush vegetation, can send the staunchest sun-worshippers scurrying for shade.

Downtown, you’re never far from an air-conditioned refuge. But it would be a shame to stay indoors when there are so many fantastic sights to see. Fortunately, some of San Antonio’s most colorful culinary traditions double as super summer coolers. From push cart vendors to higher-end cafes serving their own versions of frosty favorites, downtown abounds in those frozen concoctions that help you hang on.

From the hallowed ground of Alamo Plaza to the sacred steps of historic San Fernando Cathedral, city-licensed push cart vendors are a familiar part of the lively street scene. In addition to standard bottled water and soft drinks, these roaming refreshment stands often carry fresh fruit cups.

Watermelon, cantaloupe, pineapple, mango and strawberries are standard fare. Some cups feature long, peeled slices of fresh cucumber 32

or jicima (pronounced hic-a-ma) a Mexican root vegetable with starchy white flesh that tastes like a crisp cross between potato and pear. Locals like to season their fruit cups with salt, lime or lemon juice or deep red chili powder.

Raspas, traditional Mexican snow cones, are another push cart favorite. In addition to familiar favorites, from strawberry to bubble gum flavors, you’ll find a rainbow of exotic syrup toppings for these cups or paper cones of finely shaved ice, from mango , tamrind, leche (milk and cinnamon) and picoso (lemon and chile powder) to pickle. (Yes, pickle!)

Chamoy and chango, chili-based concoctions, are the extreme-sports version of raspa flavors, guaranteed to produce a powerful pucker. Warning – try before you buy! Locally-owned Francesco’s Gelato, right across the plaza from the Alamo, is one of the most convenient spots to take that first adventurous bites, or to feed a chamoy fix. Paletas, traditional Mexican ice cream or sorbet bars, are another push cart specialty, and you’ll also find them in the frozen treat coolers of many convenience stores and tourist shops. All the standard flavors are available, or go a little native with coconut,pecan, piña colada or horchata (a milky mixture of ground almonds, sesame, barley and rice). www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com

You don’t have to wait for National Ice Cream Day (July 20) to enjoy a cup or cone of good old-fashioned ice cream or its intense, smooth Italian cousin, gelato. Specialty shops flourish in downtown San Antonio’s heat. Justin’s Ice Cream Company, in the heart of the River Walk, has been a San Antonio staple for almost 30 years, offering a dizzying array of freshly made ice cream, gelato and frozen yogurt. Popular national chains include a Häagen-Dazs shop right next door to the Alamo, and a Ben & Jerry’s on the River Walk’s South Bank. (Besides familiar favorites from Cherry Garcia to Pfish Food, the shop features a new Mexican-menu-themed “Brrrr-ito” -- two scoops of ice cream with cookie crumbles and chocolate drizzle in a soft waffle wrap. ¡Ole!) A block or so from La Villita, next door to Hotel O’Brien, the family-owned Rio de Gelato serves up authentic Italian favorites including crema bourgeois, dolciani and spiaggia (blending raspberry an pistachio). Looking for homemade sugar-free gelato? You’ll find that among dozens offlavors arrayed temptingly in those ice-cold coolers at Francesco’s (where you’ll also find a stunning collection of “Hello Kitty!” dolls).

While iced tea is the most ubiquitous nonalcoholic drink in San Antonio, Topo Chico (highly-carbonated bottled water from Mexico) and Mexican Coca-Cola, a sweeter, syrupier version of American Coke – have large local fan bases. Aguas frescas, traditionally served in many Mexican restaurants, have also blossomed in popularity. You’ll usually see these these fresh fruit-based drinks displayed in colorful giant glass barrels. Market Square’s venerable Mi Tierra is a great place to sip one while you peruse the gloriously caloric assortment of pan dulce (Mexican pastries) and pralines in a lobby display case that seems to stretch forever. La Gloria, on the River Walk’s Museum Reach at the Pearl Complex, serves up some of the best aguas frescas in town, along with a variety of glorified Mexican street food.

The Pearl also boasts two great brewpubs; The Granary and the new Southerleigh, where craft beers are brewed in the historic old Pearl brewery. Southerleigh’s patio is a cool place to enjoy a balmy Texas night. Enjoy your cocktails

in air-conditioned comfort at downtown’s Zinc Bistro and Wine Bar, or Ocho, the bar at the Hotel Havana, next to the majestic new Tobin Center for the Performing Arts.

Last but far from least in the list of summer coolers comes that frozen concoction glorified

by Jimmy Buffet – the margarita. From Market Square’s La Margarita restaurant and bar to the River Walk’s venerable Esquire Tavern, you’ll find an astonishing variety of versions of this tequila-based cocktail at restaurants and bars around town.

Bussey’s Flea Market – Expect 75% vintage treasures and 25% new stuff; bargains in both. Opened in 1978 the flea market attracts 12,000- 16,000 people every weekend. Parking is $1 and there is no admission fee. Open Saturday and Sundays only from 7am-6pm. Located in Schertz just 30 minutesnortheast of downtown at 18738 IH 35 North.

4. Brackenridge Park – A 343-acre public park located

just 8 minutes north of downtown. It is a peaceful place to walk, run, bike or picnic. The River Walk runs through the park. Take a miniature train ride on a 2 1/2 miles route through the park; train daily, weather permitting. 3810 N. St. Mary’s St.

5. Japanese Tea Garden (also called Sunken Gardens) – Within Brackenridge Park, the garden is open daily

from dawn to dusk with no admission. A mid 1800s stone and cement quarry were the original uses for what is now a tranquil haven filled with koi, lush vegetation, and Japanese design elements. This is a photographer’s dream spot. 3853 N. St. Mary’s St.

Rio San Antonio Cruises – Visiting the River Walk without taking a boat cruise is like going to Italy and not eating pizza. Drivers are friendly and entertaining and teach you River Walk history and San Antonio culture. Tours take about 35-40 minutes and cost $8.25 for adults. Ask if you qualify for one of the many discounts offered.

Disc Golf – Disc golf is like ball golf except you fly discs (Frisbees) into a pole basket. The lowest score wins. McClain Park, 15700 O’Conner Rd. or Pearsall Park, 4700 Old Pearsall Rd., the two 18-hole courses, are approximately 5,500 feet long each with a course par in the mid-fifties. Courses unstaffed and available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Admission is free and golfers provide their own discs.

Momma always says, “breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” So if you’re just waking up or just winding down, why not enjoy breakfast with a beautiful River Walk setting?

From traditional to way-out, from light to lusty, from sensible to downright self-indulgent, there’s a breakfast to satisfy any appetite.

Charlie Wants a Burger, 223 Losoya, offers a “Hair of the Dog” breakfast. Wait for it – it starts as a drink: a large Bloody Mary garnished with celery stick and olive. But, surprise, a slider is placed on top, accompanied by fried pickles and jalapenos.

Standing tall, a strip of candied bacon inserted in the drink towers over a hot dog as a chicken wing clings to the glass. Wow. Charlie’s menu does include less adventuresome classic American breakfasts of bacon, eggs and waffles. Mexican breakfast standards include huevos rancheros and migas. Migas are essentially scrambled eggs, corn tortillas cut into small pieces that are softened while cooking along with peppers, onion and cheese.

Feeling Zen-ish? In the mood for a light breakfast and some early-morning tranquility on a patio overlooking the River Walk? Zocca’s at the Westin Riverwalk, 420 W. Market St., offers a “Tasting of Fruit” breakfast with seasonal melon, citrus, fresh berries, and lemongrass yogurt to enjoy with a cup of tazo tea or Starbucks coffee. For bigger appetites, there are menu choices from Texas-Sized, Texasshaped waffles with maple syrup, butter, powdered sugar and sliced strawberries to an Italian skillet and a full breakfast buffet including eggs to order.

Schilo’s Delicatessen at 424 E. Commerce St. just above the River Walk, continues a breakfast tradition dating back to 1917. The décor of multicolored inlaid tile floor, stamped tin ceiling and crown moldings, and walls covered with photos and postcards from a century ago, imparts the flavor of old San Antonio. In the 1800’s a majority of its citizens were of German descent. The menu offers choices from oatmeal, pastries, or bagel and cream cheese, to full breakfasts that could have come right from a German farmhouse table, featuring ham or sausage, hot cakes, grits, gravy, and biscuits big and fluffy enough to remind you of feather pillows.

It’s no secret that summers are hot in San Antonio. They are. And everyone knows that. But what visitors to the Alamo City quickly discover, San Antonio and nearby New Braunfels are home to four fabulous water parks.

The parks all feature lengthy slides and amazing tunnels and towering waterfalls. Some include tube rides too. With the exception of SeaWorld there is no extra charge for the water features once in the park. Food and drink is also available in all the water parks. And they are an easy drive from downtown San Antonio. Parking is free at Splashtown and Schlitterbahn.

Some of the area’s hotels also offer wonderful water features. They have lengthy “rivers” for guests to ride inner tubes down and some even have white water rapids. And of course most area hotels without “water features” have pools – some indoor, some rooftop.

Nothing beats a Texas afternoon or evening relaxing in cool pools or thundering down water slides to pass the time especially with children.

Once you’ve experienced the area’s water parks, you will want to return again and again.

Water Parks Splashtown San Antonio (3 minutes north of San Antonio) sits on 20 landscaped acres of cool, clean water excitement! This family owned Waterpark features nearly 60 rides & attractions including several multilevel towers, multiple tipping buckets and more. Gruene Dance Hall Gruene Hall, pronounced “green,” just like the color, built in 1878, is the oldest continually operating dance hall in the state of Texas. And as any Texan will tell you, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Not much has changed for more than a century; the 6,000 square foot hall still has the same old wooden floors, the same chicken wire windows and even the old advertisements on the walls. The only difference is now, Gruene Hall is world-famous for regularly hosting legendary country music acts.

Some well-known artists that have played at Gruene Hall over the years include: George Strait, Garth Brooks, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, BB www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com

King, Bo Diddley, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Lisa Marie Presley, Kacey Musgraves, Lyle Lovett and Dierks Bentley. And in 1996, it was the location for the movie “Michael,” starring John Travolta, Andie MacDowell, William Hurt and Bob Hoskins.

Gruene Hall features live music seven nights a week as well as Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Most Friday and Saturday nights require a cover charge or advance ticket purchase, while the rest of the time live music is offered at no charge to the public.

The drive to Gruene takes about 45 minutes from downtown. Gruene Hall is open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., Friday from 11 a.m. to 12 a.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 a.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. It is located at 1281 Gruene Road, New Braunfels, Texas 78130.

hanging cowboy boots, hats and miscellaneous cowboy paraphernalia and an enormous outdoor concert arena that has played host to the likes of Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, Willie Nelson, George Jones, Merle Haggard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, B.B. King, Ray Price, Bob Wills, Ernest Tubb and John Prine. If you have problems with your promenade or trouble with your two-step, every Sunday from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. is Family Dance Night, kids are welcome and the locals who have been coming out for the past 50 years (give or take a year) love teaching Yankees how to cut a rug Texas-style. And there’s even a café that serves up delicious Texasstyle barbecue and down home dishes for dancers who work up an appetite.

Floore’s Country Store is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 11a.m. And it closes when it closes. Dwight Yoakam, Stoney Larue, Steve Earle and the Dukes and Aaron Lewis are some of the acts scheduled to perform in June. Leon Springs Dance Hall Leon Springs Dance Hall is one of San Antonio’s most recognizable icons. If you flew in to San Antonio on one of them fancy flyin’ machines and looked out the window as you made your approach, you, too, may have noticed

a big red barn with “Leon Springs Dance Hall” painted on the enormous metal roof.

This 13,500 square-foot dance hall is known as a place to hear up-andcoming country western and old-time rock and roll bands. Past acts include The Dixie Chicks and Johnny Dee and the Rocket 88’s.

But, most importantly, this big red barn is the place to embrace your inner cowboy (or cowgirl) and join the hoedown. Wear your biggest cowboy hat, worn out boots and tightest Wranglers and mosey up to the mile-long bar. There’s live music every Friday and Saturday night with country favorites such as Jody Nix, The Almost Patsy Cline Band, Drugstore Cowboys and Cactus Country.

The barn is still regularly open to the public for a Texas-sized evening of country/western music and dancing but is sometimes closed for private events so be sure and call (210) 226-9881 or check their website at www.leonspringsdancehall.net before you saddle up your horse and venture out with your posse.
