RECOGNIZING PHILANTHROPY This spring, the Lima Memorial Foundation hosted Ovation, an event celebrating those who believe in and are committed to advancing the health of our great community through gifts to our Foundation. Awards given at the event spotlighted the many donors who shape the future of our community’s health care through cumulative gifts to the Lima Memorial Foundation. The highlight of the event was a special tribute paid to William C. Timmermeister for his lifetime of service to Lima Memorial and our community. Many of Bill’s friends joined in honoring him for his unwavering generosity, care and compassion for our community by making a gift to the Foundation in his honor. Fittingly, the event was held at the Allen County Museum & Historical Society, a place where Bill devotes much of his time. Lima Memorial is grateful for the unwavering support of its donors and those who take a lead role in inspiring others. Through local philanthropic support, the Lima region has access to world-class health care at Lima Memorial Health System.

HONORING WILLIAM C. TIMMERMEISTER The Lima Memorial Foundation is proud to have honored William C. Timmermeister for his lifetime of care for our community. A long-time business owner of Lima Auto Mall, Bill makes it a priority to support the community. This philosophy was adopted from his grandmother. She impressed upon him the obligation they have to help people who don’t share the same privileges they’ve been able to enjoy through life. Lima Memorial is grateful to be a beneficiary of Bill’s tireless support. As a founding member of the Lima Memorial Foundation, Bill’s leadership has been instrumental to bringing significant healthcare advancements to our region. In addition, Bill has been actively involved with many agencies and organizations over the years through board service and support. Thank you, Bill, for your unwavering support of our entire community.

Harry and Myrna Shutt, owners of Kewpee Hamburgers, have built their lives around caring for others and helping the community reach its fullest potential. So much of their lifetime has been dedicated to advocating for our community’s well-being through the promotion of arts, education, youth development, agriculture and healthcare advancements. Their passion and unwavering commitment to Lima Memorial extends to its employees. Each year, Kewpee Hamburger employees take up a collection at Christmas time. They fill Kewpee coffee cups up to the brim with holiday offerings and sign their names on the cup. Donations are collected from each of the three Kewpee locations and are donated to the Lima Memorial Foundation in honor of Harry and Myrna. “It is truly inspirational to see how the Kewpee team comes together to honor and recognize the Shutts during the holiday season through a gift to our foundation,” stated Lynn Carpenter, Executive Director of the Lima Memorial Foundation. “The Shutt’s love for our health system has transcended to their valued employees.”

GIVING IN SO MANY WAYS The Lima Memorial Auxiliary provides so much heart into our community of care. These dedicated volunteers donate their time and talents as well as provide significant philanthropic support to the health system. By the end of 2016, the Auxiliary completed its $300,000 pledge to support the Family Birth Center expansion. Just as the group completed one commitment, Auxiliary President Roberta Brewer announced a $500,000 pledge to support a new front lobby and expanded Auxiliary Gift Shop. At the very same time, the Auxiliary made its first payment of $100,000 toward the new pledge. Roberta acknowledges the Auxiliary’s success would not be possible without the hard work and selflessness of more than 300 active volunteers who devote their time and talents to Lima Memorial each and every day. Annually, more than 72,000 hours of volunteer service supports 50 different areas throughout the health system. As for the future goals of the Lima Memorial Auxiliary, Roberta shared they remain focused on continuing to raise funds for the hospital, all the while adding to their exceptional team of volunteers to support the health system. She becomes especially excited to see former associates return to volunteer, just like she did. “They enjoyed working here and want to continue to support Lima Memorial,” Roberta expressed. “When I started volunteering, I wanted to give back to my hospital. I had worked here for many years, and I couldn’t be where I am today without my job at Lima Memorial.”

POTASHCORP GIFT BRINGS INNOVATIVE SIMULATION LABORATORY TO LMHS

Thanks to a substantial gift from PotashCorp, Lima Memorial has established the region’s first and only simulation and education laboratory. “PotashCorp’s dedication to health and safety makes this partnership a unique opportunity to equip healthcare providers, first responders and students with the experience needed to deliver exceptional care in our community,” said Todd Sutton, General Manager of the Lima PotashCorp plant. The lab is outfitted with sophisticated simulation equipment, including real-to-life mannequins designed to deliver the most realistic training possible for healthcare providers and students. These high-tech mannequins are capable of being programmed to exhibit specific patient behaviors & symptoms and control how it responds to physical care & medications. The simulation experience allows for the deliberate practice of clinical skills. It provides a sense of realism and real-time problem solving without compromising the health and safety of patients.

12 | FOCUS

Since opening the lab in April of this year, Lima Memorial has trained more than 3,200 individuals on a variety of scenarios, including cardiac, stroke and trauma. Almost half of those trained are members of our community and include first responders and healthcare students. In addition we have taken our Resusci Anne simulator on the road to provide CPR training. She provides real-time feedback on the effectiveness of CPR compressions so participants can modify their techniques on the spot.

“Many students have shared how much they appreciate the ability to practice lifesaving skills on a simulator and receive real-time feedback,” stated Teresa Moorman, Lima Memorial Critical Care & Med-Surg Educational Coordinator. “The simulation mannequins were also a key attraction at the Greater Lima Region MakerFest. It sparked great interest among students considering a career in the biomedical and healthcare career fields.” “PotashCorp’s investment in the health and safety of its employees and our community is exceptional,” said Mike Swick, Lima Memorial Health System President & CEO. “This donation provides for advanced training opportunities for healthcare workers, which will continue to elevate the level of care delivered in our community.”

Lima Memorial Health System has been rated one of the best hospitals in the nation for infection prevention practices. Thanks to a significant gift from PotashCorp, coupled with community support, our safety program has been elevated to a whole new level with the addition of two Tru-D disinfecting robots. These Tru-D Smart UVC germ-killing robots use UVC light energy to kill deadly pathogens, such as clostridium difficile, MRSA and more, proactively reducing the risk of hospital-acquired infections. “You can’t stand still in health care, and PotashCorp and the community’s gifts have enabled us to make a leap into the future with cutting-edge technology to virtually eliminate infections,” said Mike Swick, President and CEO of Lima Memorial Health System. Adding Tru-D to our already robust infection prevention program demonstrates Lima Memorial’s commitment to a safe and germfree environment for our patients and staff. Community members can take pride in knowing the far-reaching impact their donation continues to have on the health and safety of our patients.

Since opening its doors in 2014, the Indian Lake Medical Center has provided comprehensive family medicine and walk-in care for more than 10,000 unique patients in Logan County. This critical access to rural health care would not be possible without the generosity of the Dicke Family who donated the building, located in the heart of Russells Point at 322 East Main Street. The Indian Lake Medical Center offers extended hours for family medicine, walk-in care and laboratory services. The facility is conveniently open Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 8 p.m., and Saturdays from 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. No appointments are necessary, and you do not need to be an established patient of the practice to access walk-in care. Lima Memorial is grateful to the Dicke Family for sharing our mission and helping us extend our community of care to Logan County residents and Indian Lake visitors.

Earlier this year, Lima Memorial welcomed the arrival of new, innovative lung cancer diagnostic technology that is revolutionizing the fight against lung cancer. Philanthropic support from numerous businesses and individuals made this $550,000 investment in the health of our community possible. Lung cancer is the second most common cancer in both men and women. Most often, lung cancer is diagnosed when symptoms present. At this point, the cancer is at an advanced stage with a five-year survival rate of only 15 percent. A game changer in the battle against lung cancer came in 2015 when Medicare began recognizing the benefits of a lifesaving low-dose CT lung screening for those at risk. This screening is essential to detecting cancer at its earliest, most treatable stage, before symptoms present. When suspicious lung nodules and lesions are detected through the screening process, physicians need to definitively diagnose them.

DR. SARAT KUCHIPUDI

Unique to the region, Lima Memorial’s new equipment allows physicians to definitively diagnose and stage lung cancer through a safe, minimally invasive approach. Patients will no longer have to painfully wait for answers or be exposed to the risks associated with accessing the lesions through traditional invasive methods. The other advantage this technology provides is the complete pathologic staging process in a single outpatient procedure, where patients can go home the same day. “This innovative technology allows us to provide patients with answers and options for care more quickly,” stated Dr. Jason Stienecker, Pulmonary and Critical Care Physician with Lima Memorial Physicians. “Finding lung cancer early dramatically improves survival rates. When we are able to accurately stage a patient, we are able to offer a surgical approach for treatment which often isn’t an option in an advanced-stage lung cancer diagnosis.” Lima Memorial is proud to have a team of highly trained physicians who not only provide exceptional patient care but also personally invest in bringing these leading-edge technologies to our region. Dr. Sarat Kuchipudi, Pulmonary and Sleep Physician with Lima Memorial Physicians, and his wife, Dr. Vijaya Kuchipudi, made a lead gift to the Foundation in support of this equipment. “Lima Memorial is a leader in our region and always seeks to do what is best for our community. I stand with that mission,” stated Dr. Kuchipudi. “Having this technology means earlier treatment for patients, and early treatment leads to saving lives.”

DR. JASON STIENECKER

For nearly 20 years, the Lima Memorial Rehabilitation Department has extended its care into the community by providing expert services at the Wellness Center at the Lima Family YMCA. In addition to providing therapies for patients with Parkinson’s disease, osteoporosis, sports injuries, concussions and many other orthopaedic and musculoskeletal conditions, the Wellness Center team also treats patients with vestibular and balance-related dysfunctions. Now, thanks to a generous gift from the AR-HALE Family Foundation, the Wellness Center and hospital are even more equipped to treat balance-related issues with the addition of two sophisticated HUMAC Balance Systems. In addition to assessing patients’ balance through observation, our therapists can leverage this new technology to precisely diagnose, evaluate progression and track functional outcome measures related to individuals’ balance deficiency. Even more, patients can now receive immediate visual feedback as to how well they are balancing during therapy and can subsequently self-correct the imbalance in real time. This ensures patients receive the care they deserve and allows them to return back to a normal, healthy lifestyle. The Lima Memorial Foundation is grateful to be a recipient of the AR-Hale Family Foundation grant. Countless patients will experience an improved quality of life, thanks to this generosity.

When it comes to surgical procedures, robotics is the new frontier. With faster recovery times, less operative pain and often reduced hospitalization time, surgical robotics is transforming health care, and Lima Memorial is on the forefront of this revolution. Thanks to the philanthropic support of many businesses and individuals, Lima Memorial purchased its first da Vinci® surgical robot in 2012. It did not take long for this single robot to reach its maximum capacity due to surgical demand. Propelled by incredible community support once again, a second state-of-the-art surgical robot was added in 2015. Lima Memorial’s Robotics Program has continued to deliver exceptional outcomes for our patients and has subsequently garnered national attention, being named an exclusive da Vinci® surgical robotics mentor site. Dr. Jeremy Heffner, board-certified acute care and general surgeon with Midwest Surgical Specialists, has emerged as a leader throughout the country in robotic surgery. He has been elevated to the prominent role of teaching surgeons and administrators throughout the country. They travel to Lima Memorial to learn about robotic technology and study Dr. Heffner’s surgical techniques. “We’ve seen support from both companies and other facilities to bring their professionals here to be trained; as a result, Lima Memorial is able to introduce emerging technology and resources to further improve outcomes for our patients,” Dr. Heffner explained. The surgical robotics program has also allowed Lima Memorial’s surgeons to use the least invasive approach for many procedures. “We are interested in providing the most effective techniques,” said Dr. Jaber Alanzi, Urologist with Midwest Surgical Specialists. “Instead of removing a whole kidney for a tumor, which used to be a very common practice, we are now able to take just the tumor.” More important than the technology are the skilled hands that guide it. The robotics program has been a catalyst to recruit highly specialized robotics surgeons like Dr. Noorul Khan, General Surgeon; Dr. Michael Tempel, Colorectal Surgeon and Dr. Philip Gafford, Surgical Oncologist, to name a few.

Kay Timmermeister toured the Timmermeister Family Surgery Center and met up with Dr. Jeremy Heffner. To arrange a personal tour, call the Foundation at 419-226-5087.

Dr. Gafford believes that surgical oncology robotics will open up a whole world of possibilities for our community. Dr. Gafford was drawn to Lima Memorial from Texas and identified the renowned robotics program as a main factor in his selection process. As the region’s only surgical oncologist, Dr. Gafford is now part of the most comprehensive cancer team around. “The key is that you can get all the care you need right here. Oncology cases that would have normally been sent to outlying facilities can now be done close to home,” Dr. Gafford explained. Lima Memorial’s Surgical Robotics Program is a shining example of the ripple effect created by a series of donations. Together, we are providing local access to state-of-the-art technology and the most exceptional physicians. FALL 2017 | 17

Lima Memorial has built a heart care center of excellence. We are privileged to have the region’s most trusted team of cardiologists and cardiothoracic & vascular surgeons practicing in Lima exclusively at Lima Memorial Heart & Vascular Institute. The program’s evolution began 20 years ago when we performed the region’s first openheart surgery and subsequently established Lima’s own comprehensive heart program. Over the past two decades, the cardiac field has experienced significant advancements. Our expert cardiac team is constantly focused on new innovations that will improve healthcare delivery and provide outstanding patient outcomes. But these innovations do come at a significant cost. “In order to move forward, it requires new technology,” stated Dr. Ronald Pohl, Division Chief of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery at Lima Memorial. “Medicine continually evolves, and frankly, it’s expensive.” We are now in a position to bring substantial cardiac advancements to our community of care. The Foundation has pledged its support to raise $1 million to expand access to highly sophisticated heart care locally. “We need to reinvest,” remarked Scott Shutt, Lima Memorial Foundation Board Chairman and Vice President of Kewpee Hamburgers. “That way, people can take care of themselves here locally with physicians who are able to provide the best and the latest in technologies.” With the ongoing philanthropic support of individuals and businesses, Lima Memorial is preparing to bring the most sophisticated heart rhythm management capabilities to our community. Leveraging our relationship with The Ohio State University Heart & Vascular Center, our expert team of physicians will be able to perform the most intricate electrophysiology procedures (EP) of the heart. In addition funds generated will

allow for expanded services for individuals with congestive heart failure and access to the most advanced cardiac imaging and support systems. “Having access to these advancements will reduce the overall stress on families and keep exceptional cardiac care close to home when patients need it most,” expressed Dr. Pamela Gardner, Medical Director of the Congestive Heart Failure Clinic at Lima Memorial. “Access to these resources, quite honestly, will be lifesaving.” Dr. A. Pierre Bamdad, Medical Director of Cardiac Catheterization Lab, has been providing cardiac care for our community since the very first cardiac procedure was performed. He humbly recognizes the community’s support as a key factor to the program’s success. “The Lima community has been 100% behind us to achieve what we have achieved thus far,” he commented. Our Foundation is proud of our strong tradition of partnering with the community to bring advanced technology to our region. “The community’s support thus far has been tremendous. Your continued generosity is needed to help culminate our efforts,” stated Shutt. “I invite you to join me in making a donation to the Lima Memorial Foundation in support of all of the hearts in our community.”

YOU NEVER STOP TO THINK HOW IMPORTANT IT REALLY IS TO HAVE ACCESS TO ADVANCED CARDIAC CARE, CLOSE TO HOME. NOT UNTIL YOU NEED IT.

LIVING THE SPIRIT As a community of care, Lima Memorial associates are invited each year to join the Living the Spirit campaign. This associate-driven initiative focuses on supporting the health of the community and each other through philanthropic gifts to the Lima Memorial Foundation. With an outstanding 67% participation rate among associates, coupled with 100% leadership commitment, more than $210,000 has been pledged this year to support Lima Memorial’s patients, programs, services and fellow associates. Living the Spirit Champions were the inspirational catalysts of the campaign. The associates went above and beyond to encourage giving among fellow associates. For Cecelia Rain, Registered Nurse in the Surgery Department, she made it her mission to educate everyone in her department about Living the Spirit. “I was honored to be asked to be a champion,” Cecelia expressed. “I couldn’t say no. It was my intent to reach out to everyone in my department, and I did just that.” Associates are invited to pledge their financial support and can designate their gift to an area that is of particular interest to them. For many, that area was the Associate Relief Fund. The Associate Relief Fund is a program created by associates to help fellow associates in their time of need. Using an inspirational video that shared the stories of associates impacted by a gift from the relief fund, Cecelia was able to spread the word about this important associate support system. “Employees shared what the Associate Relief Fund has meant to them or how it impacted someone else in the Lima Memorial family. Being able to share those stories peer-to-peer truly made an impact,” Cecilia shared. For many employees who have received gifts from the Associate Relief Fund, they choose to give back to the place that supported them. After losing her daughter, Rylee, to sudden infant death syndrome in October 2016, Registered Nurse and Clinical Informatics Specialist Lacey Hefner received a gift from the Associate Relief Fund. When asked to become a champion, Lacey happily accepted. “I wanted to give back for what the hospital did for me, and the easiest way to do that was to get other people to participate in Living the Spirit,” Lacey expressed. “To work in a place that does this sort of thing for its associates is just awesome.” In addition to the Associate Relief Fund, many associates designated their gifts to the area of greatest need. Over the years, these gifts have allowed Lima Memorial to invest in emerging technology to provide our community with the very best health care and enable us to attract exceptional physicians to our medical community. “Our surgical robotics program is a prime example of how gifts to the area of greatest need have allowed us to establish a world-renowned program and recruit highly specialized surgeons,” stated Mike Swick, President & CEO of Lima Memorial Health System. “It’s really exceptional how we all come together to advance the health of our community and support one another,” stated Lynn Carpenter, Executive Director of the Lima Memorial Foundation.
