For Auld Lang Syne AS THE SAYING GOES, TIME FLIES WHEN YOU’RE HAVING FUN. And time sure has flown by this year as we can’t believe we’ve put together the final issue of Vinings Lifestyle in 2018! It seems like just yesterday we were sitting down to write our January letter to all of you—talking about resolutions and renewal—and yet, here we are, almost time to do it again. There’s a unique perspective that working in publishing brings. While we certainly don’t want to wish our lives away, we’re always looking toward the future. Whether it’s planning our next issue or developing story ideas for the next year, we’re often already fast forwarded to future months before the current month has even begun. The fast-paced lifestyle this industry calls for can often make it difficult to really settle down and absorb what’s going on around us and, before we know it, the year is over and it’s time to move forward again. So this December, we hope you take the time to slow down a little bit. With the holiday season upon us, we hope you make the time to take it all in. Enjoy your time with family and friends, bask in the magic of the winter season, reflect on past memories you hold closely in your hearts and keep the new ones you create in the present for as long as you can. We’ll take your lead, and we can’t wait to see you next year!

Scofflaw Brewing began The El Felix Taco Truck series in November. "We love the El Felix! They make great Tex Mex, and we make great beer, so it’s exciting to have the chance to put both of those awesome things together,” says Scofflaw Brewing co-founder and brewmaster Travis Herman. Jan. 25 – Arches Brewing’s beers focus on bringing together the best of old-world tradition and modern practices, with an emphasis on classic lagers, as well as American- and Euro-style ales. Feb. 22 – Second Self Beer Co. will be unveiling its new guava sour beer, “Havana Night,” and introducing a “secret beer.” March 29 – New Realm Brewing prides itself on being free from dictated rule and breaking from tradition. Hoping for Hoppin’ John A SOUTHERN NEW YEAR’S TRADITION

ARTICLE FLAVIA TELES | PHOTOGRAPHY KRISTEN TAYLOR

14

Vinings Lifestyle | December 2018

IF YOU FEEL COMMITTED TO GO ALL-IN ON THIS CUSTOM:

01 Cook Hoppin’ John with a new coin in it (penny or dime), or add it to the pot before serving. If the thought of someone choking on it or swallowing it bothers you, there is a worry-free alternative: place the coin under a bowl. Either way, the recipient of the coin is deemed extra lucky. 02 Some folks eat exactly 365 peas for good luck every day of the year (one more on leap years); they avoid eating more or less, believing it to reverse said luck from good to bad. Others choose to count the peas as a predictor of the amount of luck they are to receive, disregarding the number of peas served. 03 Some people leave three peas on their plate for love, luck and fortune, while others leave one pea, meant for sharing their luck with someone else. 04 It is held that eating only the peas without the accompaniments results in good fortune that will not last. While you are at it, why not help yourself to another serving the following day? According to Southern lore, leftover Hoppin’ John becomes Skippin’ Jenny a day later; it is thought to increase your rewards even more because frugality pays off!

Historical Notes Most culinary historians agree that Hoppin' John, also known as Carolina Peas and Rice, is an American creation rooted in African, French and Caribbean NEW YEAR’S DAY REPRESENTS PERSONAL

W I N T E R’ S REVEL YOUR GUIDE TO A SIMPLE AND STYLIZED NEW YEAR’S SOIRÉE ARTICLE NICOLETTE MARTIN

26

Vinings Lifestyle | December 2018

FOLLOWING CLOSELY ON THE COATTAILS OF AUTUMNAL AND WINTER HOLIDAYS, THE CELEBRATION OF THE NEW YEAR CAN OFTEN BE OVERLOOKED DUE TO AN UNDERSTANDABLE DESIRE TO TAKE A BREAK FROM THE HUSTLE AND BUSTLE OF THE SEASON. But, a holiday that celebrates past memories and the opportunity for both new experiences and a fresh start shouldn’t lack any of

1

the glitz of its celebratory predecessors. Round out the final days of the year reminiscing on or saying goodbye to the experiences—good and bad—of the previous 12 months with a simple end-of-the-year gathering that isn’t lacking any of the glamour.

THE DRI NK S

Champagne has long been a traditional drink to toast to the new year. Keep it simple but step up your game with your own DIY Champagne cocktail bar. Consider stocking your bar full of custom Champagne or bubbly choices, festive mixers like cranberry juice or rosemary simple syrup and unique garnishes like fresh fruit and herbs or decorative ice cubes with edible flowers.

THE DECO R There’s no need to go out and buy a ton of additional decor when you just decked the halls (quite literally) with holiday ornamentation. Make those decorations work as hard as you did by repurposing all the greenery, pine cones and wood place settings you just couldn’t say no to. Throw in some neutral napkins, some natural twine and some dried orange peels for a woodsy (and fragrant) twist.

3

THE SNACKS

Keep your guests happy with the perfect cheese plate. Consider how many people you’ll be serving, whether you’ll be serving before or after dinner and what cheeses you’ll want to include. According to WineFolly.com, sparkling wines pair best with creamy, sticky cheeses due to the high acidity and carbonation. WHAT YOU NEED + Cheese board or serving plate + Assortment of cheeses (We recommend Brie, Port Salut, Muenster, Camembert or Gruyere) PUTTING IT TOGETHER Cheese is best served at room temperature, so be sure your cheese has time to rest prior to serving. Slice the cheeses and arrange artfully on your cheese board with labels for each. Consider providing separate serving knives for each cheese to avoid any mixing of flavors. Add any additional bites you’d like and enjoy!
