hat was your summer job as a teen? I bet you remember those paydays and the purchases, big (college tuition) and small (that sweater) you paid for with your hard-earned bucks. I was a lifeguard and taught swim lessons every summer, staying at the club after closing hours for...more swimming. We salute all the hard-working teens who are back to school this month and asked a few of our advertisers and friends about their memorable summer gigs. Have a great month and why not employ a teen the next time you have the chance?

Pony Up!

ith a passion for polo and a desire to give back to the community, Randy and Heather Pullen hosted the first Pony Up

For A Cause fundraiser in 2016. They decided to take a leap of faith and use their love for polo in Atlanta to partner with Atlanta Ronald McDonald House Charities to host the inaugural event held at the Atlanta Polo Club last fall. This task seemed daunting at the time, but with a huge fleet of volunteers, Bill Kaelin Events, The Atlanta Regional Polo Center, and the staff from Atlanta Ronald McDonald House Charities, the Pullen’s inaugural event raised more than $10,000 for the ARMHC mission to nurture the health and well-being of children and families. With this success, the second annual Pony Up For A Cause, presented by Northside Hospital, will be held on September 17 at the Atlanta Polo Club set in the heart of Vinings. The event will feature a sanctioned United States Polo Association (USPA) tournament, along with cuisine provided by Fogo De Chao Atlanta and Dunwoody, drinks and specialty cocktails, family activities, entertainment and both a live and silent auction. The proceeds from Pony Up For A Cause 2017 will again benefit Atlanta Ronald McDonald House Charities. “We are equally proud and excited to extend this invitation to the Atlanta community and host this wonderful event to benefit such a tremendous cause. We look forward to another successful event and to have fun, enjoy a great polo match and to give back,” says Randy Pullen. For more information, please visit

AFTER SCHOOL AT MJCCA

PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com | August 2017

F

or working parents, managing their kids’ after-school activities, solving transportation needs, and ensuring a safe and fun environment is a juggling act. Monday through Friday can feel more like a three-ring circus.

What if there was a way to be at the office, knowing your child will be safely transported to a program with a campus of excit-

ing indoor/outdoor fun, provided healthy food options, and given supervised homework time? Sound like a dream? For families in North Atlanta, there’s a team who makes this dream work, providing all this and more. It’s called Club J, an afterschool program dedicated to making life more convenient for working moms and dads, and life more enriching for kids between the hours of 2:30–6 p.m. Whether it’s getting a head start on homework in a supervised setting, or having your child served dinner one night a week, convenience for working parents is seriously considered. Club J is a one-of-a-kind, after-school experience for rising pre-K through 5th graders, located at the Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta’s (MJCCA) Zaban Park campus in Dunwoody (5342 Tilly Mill Rd., Dunwoody). Flexible three-, four- and five-day options offer working parents in Atlanta just the right plan to meet their family’s needs. Private, supervised buses pick up students from 15 area schools and safely transport them to the MJCCA, where kids are greeted and escorted inside. “I searched for an after-school program where I didn’t have to worry about how my kids would get there, and where there were activities other than just playing on a playground, or sitting for hours in yet another classroom,” says Megan Usow. “The options were either inconvenient, or uninspired, but Club J at Zaban Park takes the concept of after-school programming to another level.” Usow is now Club J Director, and dedicated to providing parents with a level of convenience and care-giving that is vitally important to herself, and many other employed moms and dads. Kids are offered a wide variety of counselor-led programs, including swimming, sports, science discovery, dance, cooking, rock wall, and many other indoor and outdoor activities. Counselors accompany kids from one activity to another, ensuring a safe and fun-filled experience. For parents with part-time or flexible-hour jobs, Transportation Only plan is also available that will enable kids to be picked up at their school, in supervised buses, and dropped off at the MJCCA. Busy parents need to be able to focus on work, and rest assured that their kids are being well taken care of. Homework started, and dinner served before you pick your kids up? Now that’s a dream come true! To register for the 2017-2018 school year, visit AtlantaJCC. org/afterschool. For more information, or to schedule a tour, contact Club J Director Megan Usow, at 678.812.3761 or megan.usow@atlantajcc.org. August 2017 | PerimeterNorthLifestyle.com

eet Raneet and Amit Khurana, proud franchise owners of Primrose School of Sandy Springs South. "We first heard of

Primrose Schools in 2008, but our Primrose story got its start in 1999 when we migrated from India to the Atlanta area," says Amit. A few years after their move, they enrolled their daughter, Aarya, in preschool, but were not completely satisfied with the quality of care she received. "We found ourselves in the same situation when our younger daughter Aanya started preschool." Moved by their struggle to find quality care for their children, Amit and Reneet began searching for a way to ensure that other families would not face the same problem. "When a friend pointed us to Primrose, we knew we had found the solution," says Amit. We asked them to tell us what is important for preschoolers and what tools parents should look for in a new school. 18

Children at Primrose School engage in physical activity each day through the Thumbs Up!® program. Through Thumbs Up!, children practice proper techniques for movement, balance and motor skills through fun exercises like running, hopping, throwing, catching, bouncing and more. 3) READING

Special emphasis is placed on reading as part of our program. Children are exposed to different types of books right from infancy all the way to kindergarten for reading development.

5) ART

Art is taught as part of steam. Children are encouraged to be creative in a wide variety of arts: fine arts to develop motor skills, singing, dancing and movement are all used for exposure to art. In our weekly lessons of Primrose's proprietary art program, children study techniques of famous artists and explore various art media and processes. Children also learn to properly use and care for art materials. 6) SIGN LANGUAGE

We start this at Infant age. To encourage language development in babies of all ages, our Primrose teachers talk to them about what is happening around them and what they see and do. They also use specific signs to accompany many of the activities throughout the day (ex. diaper changing, meal times, Og’s Story Time, etc.). Research shows that babies understand words and signs well before they can produce either. Using words along with signs promotes and strengthens early language development because it gives children a tool to express themselves. As children learn to sign, they are also likely to be developing oral language—from babbling, to cooing, and on to saying words on their own.

s summer tapers to a close, all attention shifts to school fever. New backpacks...sup-

plies...new clothes occupy the minds of both parents and children in the weeks leading up to the monumental first day. In the spirit of the season, we asked students, teachers, head masters, and counselors in our community for their tips to ensure a successful school year. Their words of wisdom ring true whether your precious little one is entering their first day of kindergarten (my advice - wait to cry until you’re out of the building!), or you’re going back to college to pursue your dream career. If you don't have a choice, ask the teacher if this may be at all possible. You'll pay better attention in class, and you'll make a good impression on your teachers. If you are just starting college, find the library on your first day--it'll help you get your work done. And, don’t tell your friends where you study in the library! On the last day of classes, personally thank your teachers. A personal thank you packs a wonderful punch. If needed, apologize for sometimes being a pain. Take it from someone who knows.

COOL CLUBS ARTICLE JORDANA KLEIN AND SUE G. COLLINS

T

ake your seat...class is about to begin! English, math, science and even PE--there’s time in the week for any subject in the book. But, what about the extracurriculars--those outside-the-classroom experiences that could

set students apart from the rest and allow them to explore their passions outside of the textbook? Local schools around our communities are offering courses and clubs for students looking to involve themselves in a well-rounded experience. From crafting to traveling to entrepreneurship, these extracurriculars are so important to the overall development of your student. By creating opportunities for kids to express their interests early with the support of classmates and teachers, these clubs and teams allow the most fulfilling enrichment without grading scale and testing pressures. Whether it’s for one semester or for four years, joining clubs and activities can lead to the best possible experience and ensure that students express themselves both in school, and in life. Here are a few of our local schools and the clubs that make them special.

THE LOVETT SCHOOL 4075 Paces Ferry Road, N.W Lovett.org Amigos Para Siempre Verde was led this past school year by alumna Camryn Bragg ('17) and rising senior Avery Newton. Both girls became interested in leading the club after they participated in a study abroad trip to Siempre Verde, Lovett's 825-acre cloudforest property in Ecuador. Though the club was created to honor the study abroad program, any 9th-12th grade student was welcome to join the club, whether they had traveled to Ecuador or not. The club’s mission was to bring the experiences students had at Siempre Verde back to campus to encourage an interest in learning more about a culture different than our own. Amigos Para Siempre Verde is also responsible for many donations such as books, uniforms, and play materials for the local school children in Ecuador. Students who choose to participate in the study abroad program often work with these same school children and even have helped install new, safer playground equipment for them. Amigos Para Siempre Verde is one of many clubs to host a Parents’ Night Out fundraising event each year in which parents give money for student volunteers to plan a night of activities for their kids while they are kid-free for the night. All proceeds go to the clubs that offered volunteers for the night. Lovett's Amigos Para Siempre Verde Wesleyan School Passport Club

WESLEYAN SCHOOL 5405 Spalding Drive, Peachtree Corners WesleyanSchool.org The Passport Club is an interactive way for 1st - 4th graders to self-study geography and cultures. Wesleyan is the only school in the state participating in the program. Students choose their own pace, studying the location of five, 10, 15 or 25 countries each month and picking one country to study in-depth. Students are then quizzed about the countries and earn exciting rewards, including stamps for their “passport,” country flag pins for their lanyard, and special bucks for an end-of-the-year world market. “Passport Club introduces our lower school students to the vast diversity of people and cultures around the world,” says Jason Scheer, Dean of Diversity. “This unique program is designed to spark a lifelong interest and appreciation for all of the world’s diverse cultures and prepares our students to thrive and grow in a wonderfully diverse world.” 24

MILL SPRINGS ACADEMY 13660 New Providence Road, Alpharetta MillSprings.org "CQ. This is WA4MSA calling CQ." Since 2013, Mill Springs has had 30 7th and 8th grade students study for and pass the FCC’s Amateur Radio Operator’s license exam to become licensed operators as a part of the Mill Springs Amateur Radio Club (MSARC). “CQ” is ham radio speak meaning, "I am ‘seeking you’ to chat on the radio." The purpose of the MSARC is to foster a passion in the practical applications of science, technology, engineering, and math while having fun. This group provides opportunities to students to further their enjoyment of ham radios and any associated field. Students have presented projects, spoken about digital radio communications, and participated in many related events. Students are mentored by members of the North Fulton Amateur Radio League and have been invited to join them in community events all over metro Atlanta to demonstrate the amateur radio. Most notably, they were instrumental in helping the school contact Commander Chris Cassidy on board the International Space Station via amateur radio.

MOUNT VERNON PRESBYTERIAN SCHOOL 510 Mt. Vernon Hwy, Sandy Springs MountVernonSchool.org Mount Vernon's Upper School students say they love the Business & Entrepreneurship Club. It is the most popular club at MVPS, and of the biggest reasons has to do with STORY. Not only do students meet important men and women from the Atlanta business community, but they also get to hear their personal stories about what it takes to achieve professional and personal success. Monthly meetings include A-list speakers allowing club members to rub elbows with the city's movers and shakers including CEOs, NFL football agents, angel investors, a Zac Brown Band founder, an olympic swimmer, television sports reporters, and a chocolate company investor. In addition to hearing from many influential people in business, Mount Vernon's Upper School Business & Entrepreneurship Club takes trips to Atlanta's thriving corporations, where they learn stories of successes and challenges of starting and maintaining a business. The club was founded in 2010 by Miles Mallory (Class of 2012) and his father Tom Mallory. Mt. Vernon's Business & Entrepreneurship Club

PINECREST ACADEMY 955 Peachtree Parkway, Cumming PinecrestAcademy.org Pinecrest Academy’s Crafters for a Cause Club was established as a service-oriented club, open to all high school students. The crafters have begun a tradition of creating "Senbazuru" or “1000 Paper Cranes for Peace” each school year. Each crane is made from a 3-inch square of origami paper. On the inside of each, Club members write a prayer for peace for each member nation of the United Nations, in their own languages and alphabets. These prayers are folded into cranes and strung on strings. The cranes are sent to Hiroshima, Japan, to join millions of other Senbazuru at the Children's Peace Monument at the Peace Memorial Park. In response to the tragedies that occurred in Paris and Beirut in November 2016, the Club also created another "spiritual bouquet" of 1,000 Cranes for Peace to send to Paris and Beirut. This tradition of “1,000 Paper Cranes” evolves from a Japanese legend which states that folding 1,000 origami cranes grants a wish. These cranes have become a symbol of peace through the story of World War II survivor Sadako Sasaki, a Japanese girl who folded a thousand paper cranes to be granted the wish to live. The Crafters for a Cause Club also participates in other service projects, including crocheting and knitting hats and scarves for the Atlanta homeless.

the inspiring SULLIVAN SISTERS ARTICLE MARGARET SULLIVAN

I

t’s said the bond between sisters is unbreakable. That holds true for the

Sullivan sisters who are three years apart, have strikingly different yet beautiful personalities and, most importantly, share a deep love for one another. In the last several months, however, Saville,

20, and Lilia, 17, have embarked upon an unexpected and challenging journey--but they face it together. In 2016, Saville and Lilia were both diagnosed with brain cancer within three weeks of one another. As incomprehensible as it is, it also puzzles the medical community. Their tumors are different types, in different locations of their brains and appear to have no genetic link. These truly unbelievable circumstances triggered Saville and Lilia’s fighting spirits as they have faced challenges and triumphs side-by-side. Need an inspiration for courage? Look no further than Saville and Lilia Sullivan’s story of strength, hope and love. Lilia is a typical 17 year old...almost. She is driven scholastically, athletically and socially. From leading her tennis team to the state championship to serving as quarterback during a high school powder puff football game, she thrives on competition. Equally as adventurous as she is competitive, Lilia returned in August of 2016 from a community service trip to South Africa followed by weeks working at Camp High Harbour. Her parents noticed she was tired, but who wouldn’t be with such an active summer? When she awakened them one night with nausea complaints, Lilia began to suffer from a full-blown seizure. It was then that her journey began with a diagnosis of a brain tumor identified as astrocytoma. Initially deemed inoperable, the talented team at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite knew the risk was one worth taking. In the last 10 months, Lilia has undergone a successful brain surgery, radiation treatments and currently takes oral chemotherapy. Would you believe this girl was on homecoming court, captain of the tennis team and headed back to Camp High Harbour this summer? She and her family coined the term, “You’ve got this.” And that she does. As Saville was visiting her sister at Scottish Rite, she mentioned having a lingering headache. If you know Saville, you know that even if she were in pain, others would still be the focus. Her loving personality is evident at the University of Alabama where, in September of 2016, she was stepping into her sophomore year, a member of Kappa Delta sorority and leading a vibrant social and academic life. Just weeks after Lilia’s surgery, a tumor in Saville’s cerebellum was discovered to be the root of her increasingly painful headache. The level of devastation that the family and all connected to the girls felt is impossible to put into words--but prayer and support for the family spread like wildfire. Like her sister with the competitive spirit, Saville has a deeply courageous spirit. Now nine months following her diagnosis, Saville was treated by the same medical team that treated Lilia and has undergone a successful surgery, proton therapy radiation and completed six months of chemotherapy at Scottish Rite’s Aflac Cancer Center in June. This August, Saville will return to Tuscaloosa to pick up where she left off...but with a new major. She will start studying to be Child Life Specialist, inspired by the those that impacted her and Lilia during some of the hardest days of their lives. The University of Alabama’s tagline is “Where Legends are Made.” Saville, you are a legend and an inspiration to everyone you meet. As it did for the Sullivan family, life can change quickly and unexpectedly. Their courage through adversity inspired Atlanta-based nonprofit Polo in the Pines to name Saville and Lilia as its 2017 honorees. Polo in the Pines, a two-day charity event full of polo matches, food, beverages and philanthropy, will donate all proceeds to brain tumor research at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Save the date for October 7-8. Join Polo in the Pines at the Atlanta Polo Club to fight against brain cancers in honor of Saville and Lilia. Lifestyle Publications is proud to be the media sponsor for this super-charged event. For tickets and more information, visit PoloinThePines.com.

Sandy Springs Novelist Draws on Academic Life in Twisty Thriller Debut SHADOW OF THE LIONS BY CHRISTOPHER SWANN ARTICLE RHIANNON JOHNSON

T

wo massive concrete lions have guarded the front entrance to Virginia’s Blackburne School for more than a century. Respected and revered, they symbolize the school’s fiercely-held traditions, especially

its honor code. After Matthias Glass confesses his honor code violation to his best friend, Fritz Davenport, they briefly argue before Fritz runs into the woods—and vanishes without a trace. In the decade following Matthias’ graduation from Blackburne, he attends college, grad school, and writes a successful first novel. When he finds himself abandoned by his writing inspiration (and his model girlfriend), he accepts a position at Blackburne teaching English. Upon his return to his alma mater, he becomes consumed with finding out what really happened to his friend all those years ago. While looking for answers, a student death on campus opens his eyes to the dark underbelly of the prestigious boys’ boarding school. Partnering with a local ex-cop to solve the mysteries, Matthias begins to suspect a campus figure may have connections to both the recent student death and Fritz’s disappearance. As he digs deeper, his search turns up much more than he bargained for, including links to the FBI, cyber surveillance, exorbitant bribes, and issues of national security. He also uncovers various Blackburne secrets as well as the dark realities of a powerful Washington D.C. family. Sandy Springs author, Christopher Swann, creates a complex protagonist and conjures an alluring and ominous prep school setting from his firsthand academic experiences. As the English department chair of Atlanta’s Holy Innocents' Episcopal School, Swann’s 21 years of teaching English are evident in Matthias Glass, a novelist turned English teacher turned amateur detective. Swann also draws on his own four years of high school at Woodberry Forest School, an all male boarding school in Virginia, to transport his readers to the insular community of Blackburne. In true Southern style, Swann also weaves the underlying theme of football into his debut novel. While the unofficial religion of the South offers many metaphors on life, Swann perfectly exemplifies the painfully tenuous transition between adolescence and adulthood with his powerfully detailed descriptions of grueling practices and an intense annual football game against their rival school. Alternating between Matthias’ student and teacher periods and filled with literary references, Swann’s Bildungsroman draws comparisons to beloved boarding school novels The Catcher in the Rye, Dead Poets

Society, and A Separate Peace. Like these classics, Shadow of the Lions explores love, loyalty, loss, duty, and betrayal. It exposes burdens of privilege, the desperation to belong, the layered creation of one’s character, and the fact that intense adolescent friendships shape all of our adult lives, for better or worse. 34
