ugust in Colorado is a funny thing. It’s dead in the middle of summer (summer doesn't end till September 22), yet we find ourselves getting the kids back to school and refocusing on work obligations that in other parts of the country are left to the post-Labor-Day realm. Time to hit "pause" on summer (or should I say, ahem, paws).

Let’s savor these “dog days of summer.” Let’s grab a beer - a really tasty, local beer - and spend quality time with our fur-ever friends. Heck, we can even combine the two! Our annual "Dogs & Brews" issue offers where to grab a beer in and around Parker (“Summer Beer Love,” p. 17), which coincidentally all have dog-friendly patios. Join us at a truly local hangout in Parker (“Where the Locals Eat,” p.22). Enjoy tips from a pro on how to get the best shots of your gorgeous pets using your iPhone (“Your Photogenic Pet,” p.34). And bask in the glow of the great design of Davis Weekley Homes at Inspiration (“Step Into the Light,” p.12). We hope you enjoy reading this issue as much as we enjoyed making it! Whatever August holds for you, may it include lots of sun, fun and puppy love.

DUMB FRIENDS LEAGUE IS "BUILDING A BETTER WAY HOME" In order to change the lives of more homeless pets today and for decades to come, the Dumb Friends League is embarking on a major renovation and construction project at its Quebec Street Shelter in Denver. The “Building a Better Way Home” project will upgrade the oldest and most heavily used areas of the facility while expanding and enhancing other critical parts of the shelter. “ Together with our compassionate community, we have created a demand for an elevated level of care for homeless pets,” said Bob Rohde, president and CEO of the Dumb Friends League. “With the renovation of the Quebec Street Shelter, we will meet those expectations, and over the next 10 years, the new state-ofthe-art shelter will enable us to make a life-changing difference for an additional 60,000 homeless pets.” When the Quebec Street Shelter was completed in 1974, it was a state-of-the-art facility that set the standard for what an animal shelter could be. Since then, the building has undergone multiple additions, remodels and updates in order to better serve animals in the Dumb Friends League’s care. While those renovations have proven valuable, time has caught up with the Quebec Street Shelter. Today, key portions of the 43-year-old building no longer fulfill the needs of today’s animals or the Dumb Friends League’s commitment to providing the best possible care to homeless pets in the future. Some highlights of the three-year, $40 million renovation project include major renovations to the Veterinary Services department, which is currently too small to meet our animal’s needs. The new, larger, state-of-the-art medical area will nearly double the shelter’s capacity to perform surgical procedures, reducing the time that pets are in the shelter. The project also includes construction of a new dog adoptions and transition area that will

The Building a Better Way Home project will create a dedicated area for the Dumb Friends League Behavior department, featuring a quiet, isolated wing for dogs learning to trust again and a separate, calm area for cats receiving behavior support. The new space will allow more pets that are fearful, shy or have other behavior challenges to be enrolled in the League’s behavior programs so they have greater opportunities to find new homes. The Building a Better Way Home project is being made possible by an extraordinary $20 million matching gift from Leslie and John Malone and The Malone Family Foundation. “With the

ong before anyone actually moves into a David Weekley home, the team at David Weekley works to anticipate how the home will

be used — the ways in which the family will move around the home, the potential purposes of different rooms, and how the home will continue to grow to meet the changing needs of the people who live in it. How do they do this? When designing a home, David Weekley Homes keeps in mind their four main components of LifeDesign: sight lines, traffic patterns, room placement, and windows and light. spaces seem larger without actually increasing square footage. Instead of fretting about how a design looks on paper, designers at David Weekley Homes try to anticipate how people will actually move around the home, what their traffic patterns will be like. They use rooms as transition spaces instead of hallways to make spaces feel larger and more open while at the same time ensuring that traffic patterns won’t interfere with the purpose of the space. Rooms are placed in areas that allow for smooth transitions while also keeping in mind the importance of having some spaces in which to congregate and some in which to retreat. And last but certainly not least, David Weekley Homes recognizes the importance of natural light and thinks carefully about window placement — both how the windows will help light the home and how views can make the exterior environment part of the interior environment, enlivening the space.

WHERE THE LOCALS EAT HOW LAS DELICIAS HAS BEEN BRINGING IN THE REGULARS FOR YEARS ON END ARTICLE ROBIN BOND | PHOTOGRAPHY RAEMI VERMIGLIO

“F

#2? Look for the crowds. That’s a no-brainer here in Parker USA. Head over to Las Delicias most any afternoon - especially Friday - and you’ll see a line of regulars who just can’t get enough of the fresh Mexican cuisine and friendly staff. Stephen, a regular who lives in the Pinery, sits comfortably at the bar enjoying his favorite meal, Carnitas Burritos and a beer. “Everything is always quality and consistent,” says Stephen, who adds that his favorite part is the bartenders. No surprise that the friendly knowledgable staff is rated tops in town, as Las Delicias has employed many of the same folks for much of its 24-25 years at the Mainstreet location. Says General Manager Chuy Campista, “It’s the same employees, same kitchen, same flavor every time you eat here. We take care of our people the same way we take care of our customers.” First established in 1976, the Las Delicias family of restaurants today has five locations in and around Denver metro open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. See you there!

HYDRATION SITUATION KEEPING FIDO COOL ARTICLE JODI HORNER

T

he dog days of summer are here , , it’s important to be vigilant in monitoring the well-being of our four-legged fur

kids in the August heat. Heather Allman of the Veterinary Center of Parker explains the differences in reading a dog’s overheated condition, versus a human. “Dogs do not have sweat glands. They eliminate heat by panting as it evaporates fluids from the respiratory tract,” she says. So it’s important that owners provide enough water for pets to ensure they are replacing these lost fluids, even placing ice cubes in the water to keep it cool “and make it fun,” she says. Allman strongly recommends leaving dogs at home on warm days. “On a 72-degree day, the temperatures inside your car can heat to 116 degrees within an hour,” she says. “Even if you're just running to the store real quick or going to the gas station,” better safe than sorry, she says. Allman also advises owners to keep pets in the house during the warmest times of the day. “It’s best to enjoy outside time with your pets earlier in the morning and later in the evening once the sun has begun to set,” she says. This also ensures that the ground is safe to touch for the pads of your dog’s feet. In fact, during the summer months the veterinary center sees dogs with abrasions and burns on their pads from the asphalt. For some perspective, Allman explains that a 75-degree day can heat asphalt to 125 degrees. “If you test the asphalt using the back of your hand for seven seconds and it’s too hot for you to touch, then it’s too hot for your dog,” Allman says.

CREATE A “doggie pool” by turning an inexpensive kiddie pool into a doggie pool. Your pet can use it as a play area for keeping cool throughout the day. TIP: Keep the pool in the shade to keep the water from getting hot.

COOL TREATS Ice cubes can keep dogs

“Just don’t take your dog everywhere with you. They don’t need to go to the Renaissance Festival or taco night,” she says with a laugh. Allman says there are definite indicators that signal your pet has had too much heat, though owners need to be alert to notice. Sunken eyes, dark urine and excessive panting are all signs that owners can miss when their dog is overheating. “People may be used to seeing their pets panting, but they need to pay attention to how heavy it is and how long it’s been going on,” Allman says. By keeping your dog well-hydrated, out of the intense heat, and indoors, you can be confident that your best friend will have a happy - and safe - summer.
