ithout a doubt, one of the most attractive things about considering a move to Colorado, from the Midwest, was the abundance of awesome music that comes through the area.

As a daily scroller of the headlines on jambands.com, it seemed like anytime there was an epic collaboration, or rare supergroup playing a handful of intimate gigs, Colorado’s Front Range was a likely tour stop. After living here for almost five years, it has become easy to get spoiled with all the options. While living in Kansas City, going to see excellent bluegrass or jam bands usually meant a one-hour commute there and back to Lawrence, Kansas.

While I enjoy nothing more than being home with my wife and four kids, sometimes you just have to get out and go to a show! Earlier this year, it was announced that founding Grateful Dead members, Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, and Bill Kreutzmann, joined by John Mayer, Oteil Burbridge, and Jeff Chimenti (Dead and Company) would be returning to Folsom Field for two nights this summer. As a huge dead-head, you can imagine how pumped I was when I saw that the shows fell over the weekend of my 40th birthday. Happy Father’s Day to all the dads and we hope you enjoy reading this issue as much as we enjoyed putting it together. Certainly, a pleasure to have so many incredible local guys involved. All the best to the start of your summer!

Foose says, “I think there's something special about making something for someone to actually put to use. I love creating something that is still art and is unique and beautiful but also has a purpose.” “I think I'm very detail oriented, I like things to be a certain way so that tends to result in successful work. It's also a double-edged sword because sometimes not everything can be perfect. My daily routine sort of revolves around working in the studio. On work days I try to get at least six hours in the studio doing various things. If I can throw work by the beginning of the week I tend to be able to fire work at the end of the week. In between is time spent working in the woodshop or on new ideas,” says Foose. A tasteful and well-practiced aesthetic is displayed in his pieces. While the overall designs are minimalistic, sharp directionality is created by the bold horizontal lines and reinforced by color choice. The overall effect is a warming one, with the ability to put any viewer at peace. Functionality plays a crucial role for creating these type of usable wares. Foose says, “I think there's something special about making something for someone to actually put to use. I love creating something that is still art and is unique and beautiful but also has a purpose.” His works uphold a natural quality and structure. Surfaces are charmingly tranquil. Some cups look so creamy smooth you want to drink them up. He explains the process of achieving this surface. “Right now I'm really into super smooth surfaces. My ceramics rely on a lot of raw surfaces so I tend to do quite a bit of sanding and smoothing before they are complete. In my woodwork, I am also really into sanding down surfaces to a buttery smoothness. However, I am also getting into mixing rough handcut and facets with the smooth surfaces.” Admittedly, he is a trial and error type of artist. I believe this is a trait found in many successful artisans. On Instagram he has begun to intertwine the two mediums at a foundational level. Constructing wooden panels to accompany ceramic coffee mugs and accessories. “I think the two materials work really well together in a lot of ways! I grew up learning the basics of woodworking so I've always had interest in it and I've sort of started to build off of that and create work that fits my brand.“ View more of his work and follow Callahan on

crossroads when the current owner of the then-named
“Meadowlark Barbers” in Lakewood offered him her shop. She’d been running the shop for 26 years and was looking to sell to another barber. “The truth is, at first, I just wanted to buy that shop for the equipment and try and open my own shop somewhere else,” explains Romero. “But, then one night I pulled into the parking lot, clicked my car lights on so I could light up the space and I took a good look inside. And I realized this place could work.” A lot of the appeal to staying in the current space was the neighborhood. The shop had a loyal community that had been coming in for cuts for years. Romero himself had grown up in the neighborhood, and his parents lived only four blocks away. “I thought about folks like my pops,” he laughs. After buying the space, he blew out the wall in the building next door, took it from four to 13 chairs, and put in a tattoo parlor for five artists in the back. "I wanted a place my grandfather and father would be proud to call their shop, but where my mom would feel comfortable." A licensed hair stylist and barber, Romero’s career has slowly shifted to men’s hair. “I do see barbering as my craft,” he says. “My favorite thing about cutting hair is to have someone sit in my chair for 30 minutes and have a quality conversation. They can forget about everything. And at the end, I hold that mirror up, and they feel better. It’s a transformation.” Romero recently opened a second shop on 21st and Curtis, four blocks from Coors Field. “This shop has been five years in the making, and I feel like we found the right opportunity and coming into this neighborhood felt right.” Built on community and everyday people, Romero’s shops see faces from all walks of life, including local icons like athletes from the Rockies and the Denver Broncos. But Romero downplays these celebrity appearances.
“WHETHER YOU’RE A TRASH MAN OR A TYCOON, WHEN YOU SIT IN MY CHAIR, YOU’RE JUST ANOTHER PERSON. PAT BOWLEN III HAS COME THROUGH, AND CHARLIE BLACKMON, BUT SO HAS MR. ANDERSON FOR 40 YEARS,” EXPLAINS ROMERO, REFERENCING A MEADOWLARK NEIGHBORHOOD OLD-TIMER. “IT’S NEVER BEEN ABOUT CELEBRITIES; I JUST TAKE CARE OF PEOPLE.” And while Romero thinks franchises and chains serve their purpose, he says nothing compares to the consistency of a locally owned, neighborhood barbershop with a diverse clientele. “It’s that timeless place where everything else around it can change, but it stays the same.” 42

the lack of a better word. We spent two full days in the studio, from roughly noon to midnight, recording for much of that time. Justin wanted to capture the essence of specific Dead songs but didn't want us to "cover" the songs, so we'd reference a recording of those songs here and there, then go track for an hour or two, take a break, and do that until we were out of time. What you hear on the record is exactly what happened at that moment in the room, no edits, no overdubs. Q: SINCE RELEASING THE ALBUM, CATS HAS DECIDED TO GO ON TOUR. CAN YOU TALK ABOUT MAKING THAT DECISION AND WHAT WE CAN EXPECT IN THE FUTURE?
A: Once it became clear our music was resonating with folks, it became a possibility to play live. Our first show was at Lock'n Festival last Summer and was well received. After that, we did a three night run on the East coast, including a night at Brooklyn Bowl in NYC. So now we get to go out on a 4-night run through my home state, including a show at the Ogden Theater in my hometown of Denver! We will also play at The Boulder Theater after Dead & Company‘s performance at Folsom Field in Boulder on Friday June 9th. We are taking things slow, not overextending, and also working around some very busy schedules. We'll see what the future holds, but from where I'm sitting, it feels like more recording and touring for sure! Q: CATS HAS GIVEN YOU THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE THE STAGE WITH PHIL LESH. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR MOST MEMORABLE EXPERIENCES PLAYING WITH HIM?
A: Playing with Phil Lesh and the groups he assembles has been a true honor, and the experiences are ones that will stay with me and inspire me for the rest of my days. My most memorable Phil Lesh and Friends experiences would have to be his 3-night birthday run at The Capitol Theater in March and an outdoor show at Terrapin Crossroads last September. Own your lifestyle Common Concerns When It’s Time to Downsize Have you ever considered downsizing? While the idea 3.
may seem a bit daunting at first, the trade-offs of downsizing can be well worth it, including the ability to embrace a lock-and-leave type lifestyle to facilitate your evolving desires to travel and enjoy life. As you explore your options for downsizing, here are some common concerns we assist our clients to address:
1.
Do you need to pare down your belongings? We partner with a network of sophisticated art consultants, professional organizers, interior designers and other experts who can help curate your current household possessions and collectibles by paring them down and determining suitability for your next home situation.
2. Do you have a prized wine cellar or other special area of your home you would want to re-create? Many luxury condos, lofts and chic homes these days have open layouts which allow for the creative use of space, including custom-designed glass wine cellars worthy of any private wine tasting or special occasion. High-end condos also commonly offer designated spaces for prized collections such as these within easily accessible areas of the building.
Are you concerned with how your pets may fare in a downsized living arrangement? Most condos and neighborhoods cater to our furry friends these days in various ways so the possibilities here are endless, including the fact that many pets enjoy the companionship and exercise available at exclusive dog parks near their homes. If pets are central to your life, we will work with you to determine those needs and find a perfect fit.
In
short, the Denver Luxe Team is here to help you take an in-depth look at the current market and at your specific lifestyle goals to help determine which neighborhoods, amenities and housing choices could be perfect for your particular time in life.
