he September issue in the editorial world is traditionally the biggest production of the year featuring all things fashion. Why one might ask? I sure did, and after digging around, I found the best explanation from good ole Vogue, the encyclopedia of fashion. September is the signal of summertime coming to an end. As school gets back in session and work revs up again, it’s a fresh start to the year while temperature drop and leaves begin to change. Bikinis, shorts and tank tops no longer reign supreme, and we’re all looking for a little inspiration to fall into (get it?). And nothing says inspiration like a full blown fashion spread. Inspired by all of the above ^ a small crew including photographer Joe Friend and stylist Edie Ure ventured south to the Great Sand Dunes to catch the hot sun and sand a little longer. “When we sat down to talk about the September fashion issue I had two immediate thoughts.” Says Ure, stylist and art director. “1/ We live in one of the most majestic and naturally diverse states, and where better than to photograph the fashion editorial than against one of Mother Nature’s most enchanting accomplishments, the Great Sand Dunes National Park. It’s a dramatic backdrop featuring the tallest Dunes in North America. 2/ I really wanted to use strong Colorado Women, models, who reflected a truer picture of our state. The world is a multicultural society to which we all belong, we definitely need to celebrate that more,” says Ure.

Cut back all of your perennials during the fall. Snow can mat down these plants, meaning they’ll have to work harder to sprout during the spring. Give them a helping hand and trim them before winter hits. *BONUS TIP: If your perennials are in a partic-
ularly cold patch of your yard, cover them with mulch during winter for insulation.

Choose a warm day during autumn to give your grass one last cut, so it heads into winter looking fresh. Be sure to bag and remove clippings and rake the yard afterward, so you don’t get a heavy build-up of thatch come spring.

Applying fertilizer in the fall and winter is crucial to give your grass the strength it needs to grow back as soon as possible in the spring. 04
Wintertime watering! Snowfall doesn’t adequately hydrate your plants and lawn. If the temperature is going to be above 50 degrees for a few consecutive days, water your plants and grass to keep them from drying out during the cold spells.

r. Lynch opened ADIO Health Chiropractic in December 2014 when he instantly fell in love with the
area. Although there is a lot of competition in Boulder, Dr. Lynch has set himself apart from the crowd with the torque release technique that only he offers in this area. “It’s a 100 percent neurologically-based technique, so it’s incredibly specific—there’s no twisting, cracking, popping,” he says. “We use an instrument to adjust, so that’s appealing to a lot of people, especially for kiddos or parents with kiddos.” Although Dr. Lynch sees all age groups, he specializes in helping pregnant mothers, children and families live their healthiest life. Because our society is looking down more from cell phones, Dr. Lynch notices an increase in teenagers coming in with issues like anxiety, sleep issues, adrenal fatigue, digestive issues and hormonal issues that are associated with “tech neck.” “We’re starting to see the degeneration of the spine in teenagers,” says Dr. Lynch. “When you lose the cervical curve of the neck it puts you in this fight or flight, so you’re stuck in that state. We’ve noticed a huge improvement

from just correcting the structure of the cervical spine.” Dr. Lynch encourages parents to bring in newborn babies for checkups because of the birthing process. “It’s a lot of trauma to the upper part of the neck, and the upper part of the neck is the most neurologically dense part of the spine,” he says. “So when there’s tension up there, you see colic and acid reflux. When you release the stress in the nervous system, a lot of those problems will go away.” And for pregnant women, Dr. Lynch educates women on how to feel in control of their births and have less fear around the delivery. After experiencing his three children's births that ranged from a medical emergency to a natural, home birth, he can relate to all experiences their clients encounter and offer his personal advice. He also is certified in the Webster technique, a sacral and pelvic adjustment to help the nervous system during pregnancy. But Dr. Lynch also recommends that healthy people come in for chiropractic work regularly, too. “People go to the dentist a couple of times a year to get a check up,” he says. “You can’t base your health off of how you look and how you feel. You can replace your teeth, but you can’t replace your spine.”

THUNDER AND RAIN IS TAKING COLORADO MUSIC BY STORM

T
hunder and Rain is an innovative country band based in the foothills of Golden, Colorado. The group was founded by Erinn Peet-Lukes (vocals/ guitar) and Pete Weber (mandolin). The duo knew that Denver
would be a good home for their “newgrass” style and, after making the move, they met Chris Herbst (dobro), a Vancouver, B.C. native, and Ian Haegele (bass), originally from Wisconsin. Today, Thunder and Rain is on the verge of releasing their second studio album “Start Believing.” We were lucky enough to talk with Peet-Lukes this past month about the group’s creative process, personality and dreams for the future. THE BEGINNINGS
Peet-Lukes began singing early on, inspired by a childhood love of Disney songs. “My sisters and I were really into Disney movies like Aladdin, Lion King, and Pocahontas,” Peet-Lukes remembers. In middle school, Peet-Lukes took up the guitar, a perfect companion to her vocals. “I had a friend who played the guitar, and I thought it was the coolest thing,” Peet-Lukes explains. “She taught me a song so I could prove to my parents that I deserved lessons. I played them the bass line from “7 Nation Army” by the White Stripes at the dinner table, and they agreed to fund some lessons for me.” After Peet-Lukes and Weber had met, they began playing music together at Pike Place Market in downtown Seattle. Eventually, the duo moved to Denver together and, soon after, they began hunting for a bass player. “We called Ian up, he played a gig with us, and that was it!” says Peet-Lukes. They then met Chris after playing with him at a bluegrass festival in Vancouver. “We thought he was the best musician at the festival and told him to let us know if he ever wanted to play with us in Colorado,” PeetLukes recollects. “He took us up on our offer this past October!” THE PROCESS
“The first step to my songwriting process is that I write in a journal almost daily,” Peet-Lukes explains. “It’s never very good or poignant, and I don’t intend it to be. I just write it out to get it out. Eventually, I’ll start strumming chords and humming. 90% of the time nothing happens, but 10% of the time, melody and words sound catchy together, and I’ll dive into writing a song.” When asked about the stories she hopes to tell with her music, Peet-Lukes simply says “My goal is to write songs that people will play over and over again because the songs talk about how they feel, but in a way, they couldn’t quite express.” THE FUTURE
Thunder and Rain followed the release of their first studio album, “Holler Out,” in 2015 with the release of their EP “Run With You” in 2016, and they are on the brink of releasing their second full studio album, “Start Believing,” due this September. The album will be a continuation of the tone set by “Run With You,” a mix of country and bluegrass with pop overtones.

T
here’s an undeniable sense of mystery that the desert evokes: its hidden life
sprouting from impossible soil, its untouched surface etched like a fingerprint. If you’ve ever sank your toes into the fine-grain terrain of the Great Sand Dunes, you understand this magic that lies in these hills. Nested between the walls of the San Juans, this desolate landscape served as the back-
drop for this year’s styled fall fashion shoot. The Boulder Lifestyle team joined photographer, Joe Friend, and stylist, Edie Ure, on a weekend rendezvous to mirror its natural tones and delicate movement like a mirage. The first shoot featured all-white styling to contrast the evening light and bring out the brush-covered mountains. The following day, bright and early, the crew climbed the Dunes against a rose sky wearing feminine designs provided by the likes of Carol Ann Wachter, Christina's Luxuries, Cedar & Hyde Mercantile, MAX Clothing and Old Gold Vintage. Our last shoot included a mix of greens, blues, reds and yellows to highlight some of the deeper tones in the grasses and afternoon atmosphere. Standing on top of its peaks, we wanted to channel the warmth that the sky delivered that morning while incorporating the neutral shades of the sand. Throughout this process, the models were encouraged to express themselves freely and elicit their inner strength and support for one another. By mimicking the natural environment, we hope to inspire others to celebrate their raw beauty. CONTINUED >

lexa Allen Design is a name some may recognize, but few know the maker/artist/designer/mom behind the brand. Alexa Allen uses her hands creating wood
objects and leather goods (like, really good) for her business and working with the one and only Todd Reed. Inspired by all the usual suspects; art, architecture and furniture design, her first creative passion, her style is best described by Alexa herself, "simple, with clean lines, and a bit of a tomboy aesthetic." Alexa invited us into her new home studio space where she can wear all of her hats, and wear them well. We spent the day with her to see what 24 hours looks like with Alexa Allen Design. Â

n the past, most Boulder men would be seen out and about town wearing athleisure clothing—probably because they just got back from hiking, climbing or skiing all day. But the Boulder man is starting to evolve his style into a hip, sleek and (in our opinion)
sexy look that gives us vibes of big-city-living tucked into the mountains. These men represent the artists, musicians and creatives that Boulder naturally attracts. We’ve rounded up a guide for all Boulder men to embrace this new edgy style—from picking up the perfect jean jacket at Canoe Club to getting a retro-inspired trim at Truman Barber Co., to even getting a tattoo at Claw and Talon that speaks to your mountain-man heart. TRUMAN BARBER CO. Anthony Lavdanski was living in Nashville, Tennessee when his friend and now business partner Vince Romano from Truman Boot Co., noticed Boulder was missing an authentic barbershop for men to get quality cuts. “Most people go to Denver, or they don’t have anyone good in town,” says Lavdanski. Before going to Barber school in Pennsylvania, Lavdanski was a traveling musician in a band called Magic. But after two years of touring, he was burnt out and personally felt the lifestyle was too selfish for him. Lavdanski found a familiarity with cutting hair because he grew up getting cuts from his dad as a kid and even gave informal cuts to friends. “This is a way that I can make people feel good in a more hands-on type way.” Truman Barber Co. offers a variety of styles for men and women interested in shorter styles. Lavdanski is noticing a trend in classic, timeless and short haircuts, but wants to see more flowy looks emerge in Boulder. “I don’t want to change the Boulder look but instead enhance it in the sense that there’s a better way to wear your hair without a huge amount of attention,” says Lavdanski. “I want it to be lifestyle-friendly and designed for Colorado.”

CANOE CLUB Canoe Club is more than a retail space—it’s a place to start a conversation about fashion. The store is located on the west end of Pearl street and makes you feel like you’ve stepped into a rustic, lakeside cabin from the 1970s. Cozy rugs, wood paneling and house plants scatter throughout the Americana menswear; vinyl records are playing the background, and a beer or canned wine is offered to you from a vintage refrigerator. “The whole idea came from this space being available and being able to open up the doors and look at the Flatirons,” says Bob Lamey, the founder of Canoe Club. “If we were down [Pearl street] and we have 100 extra people a day, that would compromise the vibe that we’re trying to accomplish.” The Canoe Club sells high-end clothing that is made from unique, innovative brands as well as one-of-a-kind vintage pieces. “Some people want to buy the vintage pieces because it reflects labor, hard work and toll, and it’s really distressed well; and then there’s other people who buy raw denim because they say they want to put their own signature on it,” says Lamey. “And we’ll cover both bases.” Lamey and his partners are passionate storytellers. When you enter the store, you’ll find yourself on an educational journey about textiles and how the clothing is made, or the story behind the designer and why it’s so unique. “We’re not a department store, we’re not trying to churn mass sales,” says Lamey. “We’re trying to be an advocate for brands and designers that we think are doing cool things and that requires the time to have that conversation. It’s also the reason why we chose those Japanese craft whiskeys and different things because everything we have, we want to be a conversation point,” says Lamey. Lamey was the founder of the online women’s retail store Shopbop before opening the Canoe Club in March 2017. His passion is clothing and saw the need for a men’s retail space in the up-and-coming Boulder scene. “The belief is that there is a customer here that knows these brands and hasn’t had access to touching it and feeling it and trying it on, or they don’t know these brands, and they’re open to being educated and get excited about it,” he says. The Canoe Club hosts brands that we grew up knowing and loving like Levis and Barcuta. From styles like flannel and denim shirts, sneakers, moccasins and work boots, the Boulder man can find something that fits his style. “For so long, what was considered men’s fashion was a Jil Sander or Prada, and that doesn’t appeal to everybody—but everybody wants a denim jacket,” says Lamey. Lamey’s mission to one day be the authority on men’s fashion and hopes that ripples throughout the town. “Wouldn’t it be amazing if somewhere down the line someone said Boulder was the best-dressed town in America?” he asked. At the rate Boulder’s going, it might not be that far off.

CLAW AND TALON TATTOO David Goodnight is an up-and-coming tattoo artist and illustrator that has been working at Claw and Talon Tattoo for roughly two years. His black ink style often features botanicals, animals and anatomical drawings that look straight out of a 100-year-old textbook. “This whole style came up by accident,” he said admittedly. He found he had a specialized talent after a client requested a tattoo to look like a woodcut. From there, he began to refine his look and build a strong customer base. Goodnight doesn’t see himself as an impact on the changing style and look of Boulder but rather focuses on how he can help his clients express themselves artistically and appreciate artwork that they can carry with them everywhere. “The style transcends—I don’t see [my tattoos] as masculine or feminine in their characteristics,” says Goodnight. “It comes down to what tattoos have always been—a form of self-expression.” It seems like as tattoos increasingly become a cultural norm, the Boulder man is finding the idea of permanency to be less intimidating and more as an expression of art and self. “I understand that people want to put a lot of thought into it, but I have such an appreciation for people that say, ‘let’s just go for it,'” says Goodnight.

It’s not just tossing old clothes that are causing problems; everything from the production of materials like cotton, which requires huge quantities of water to grow, to the chemicals used in the dying process, and even the energy used to heat water for a load of laundry, impacts our environment. According to the Council for Textile Recycling, Americans send 12.5 million tons of textiles to the landfill every year. That's 82 pounds per person. On top of that, Americans only donate 15% of their unwanted clothing every year, which means that 85% goes into a landfill. The EPA estimates show that textile waste fills 5% of landfill space. Often, the solution to reducing waste is to recycle, but with clothing, the recycling process isn’t simple. With some fabrics, like cotton, breaking down the material breaks down the strength of the fibers. On top of that, most clothes aren’t made of only one one material – most clothing is a composite of materials like cotton, polyester, and spandex, which further complicates the process. Evrnu is a company dedicated to perfecting the practice of taking old clothing, shredding them, and breaking down the molecules to create a new fiber. But perfecting this task is a challenge and is still far from being a realistic plan. Luckily, in the mean time, there are already plenty of local programs and charities to aid the reuse cause. Dress for Success Denver is a charity dedicated to empowering women and helping them become economically independent. One aspect of the charity is providing professional attire for women who have an upcoming job interview or who have just been offered a job. If you have any professional women’s clothing in good shape, Dress for Success might be the right place for you to donate. Amara Martin, the executive director, says that the clothing they accept for donations should be clean, and look almost new, something you might offer to your sister or a friend. Goodwill is another option for clothing donations, with a wider range of accepted clothing. According to Jessica Smith of Goodwill Denver, 12 million pounds of clothing was donated to Goodwill in 2015. Goodwill is one of the most widespread charities, with donation centers all around the greater Denver area. Deacon’s Closet, operated out of Boulder’s First Presbyterian Church on 16th and Walnut, offers

clothing at no cost to those in need. As winter approaches, keep in mind that their need for coats, gloves, and hats, grows. Even though this problem isn’t small, every small effort to help makes a difference. So next time you clean out your closet, donate clothes to someone in need instead of dropping them into the trash.

You describe working at a publishing company in downtown Boulder; hiking in the foothills around town and visiting an ashram just outside of Boulder. Is this a typical Boulder lifestyle? A: Many people come to Boulder longing for a
stimulating career, a healthy outdoor lifestyle, or seeking spiritual nourishment. Boulder offers all of those things. I love my career; I’ve spent 40+ years hiking Boulder foothills and surrounding peaks, and have been deeply nourished by the array of amazing spiritual communities. The Boulder lifestyle nourishes us on every level. Q: You describe your childhood in the deep
South which is very different from the life you describe in Boulder. Were you searching for something when you came to Boulder? Are most people searching for something when they come to Boulder today? A: I came here on a rock climbing trip in 1977.
I was seeking adventure and an outdoor lifestyle, but along the way, I found so much more. Boulder has a way of pulling us in with its beauty and then turning us upside down until we’ve opened up and transformed in unexpected ways. I’m grateful for every minute I’ve spent in this sacred place; it has pushed me to grow beyond what I ever imagined. Q: Why did you choose to write such a deeply
personal and revealing memoir about such a painful time in your life? Why share that? A: I wanted to encourage anyone facing heart-
