Summer State of Mind

JULY 2017

“S

ummertime and the livin’ is easy” has been on repeat since the summer solstice. It’s my favorite season (a close competitor is fall), and I’m soaking in every carefree moment. I can’t even keep track of all of the ‘out of the office’ emails I’ve gotten this season, but I’m certainly not complaining. It feels like a real summer break. “Play” is our theme for the month of July. And there are plenty of different ways to get out there and have F-U-N.

Maybe a weekend retreat is in order which is where The Makerie comes into play. We met with The Makerie Founder Ali DeJohn at their past getaway and discovered their mission for creative nourishment. Ali also shared a DIY that’s sure to spice up any party. It also wouldn’t be summer without music festivals, camping and the great outdoors. Planet Bluegrass infuses all of the summer’s best qualities and has been hosting festivals for over a quarter of a century. After the tragic flood in 2013 in Lyons, they’ve rebuilt, rebranded and haven’t lost their touch at being the most reputable entertainer. We also threw in a few smoothie recipes because it’s not summer without a fruit smoothie. Warning: they’re delicious and healthy so don’t tell your kids.

CREATE A ROOM TO GROW GIVE YOUR KIDS A SPACE THEY WILL LOVE TO CALL THEIR OWN WITH THESE SEVEN TIPS AND TRICKS FROM MOMS AND DESIGNERS THAT KNOW A SPACE HAS TO GROW AND EVOLVE WITH THE FAMILY TO THRIVE.

ARTICLE SAM TRUEHEART

01 FIND YOUR INSPIRATION

Taking on the project to decorate a kid’s bedroom or playspace might feel overwhelming with so many styles and looks out there. “I’m a lover of design magazines,” says Jamie Harriman, a mother of three, who transformed a part her basement into a play space for her children to put on concerts and dance rehearsals. She looked at Pinterest, Instagram, Houzz and her favorite design magazine, LivingEtc, to come up with a personal style that is beautiful, playful and most importantly— functional for the family. 42

Stephanie Waddell, interior designer with Agnes & Hoss, designed her son's room with timeless pieces.

02 START WITH ONE PIECE

Still feeling stuck on how to start? Find an item that you absolutely love and that you know must go into the room. “The client had this artwork and quilt that they wanted to use and we built the color palettes from that,” says Cherie Goff, a partner and architect from HMH Architecture + Interiors. Make these pieces the focal point of your room and let the rest of the design flow through those inspirations. 03 ADD A FUN NOOK OR HIDEAWAY

A great feature to add to a child’s space is a nook, bunk bed, or place for kids to hideaway and go into their own world. Goff incorporated a bunk bed and a play area underneath for the children to have friends over for sleepovers or somewhere to have an alone space. Harriman’s curtain in the playroom creates imagination for her children and helps divide the space from the rest of the basement. CONTINUED >

04 BE MINDFUL OF GROWTH

Children grow quickly and have changing interests as they develop into teenagers. “Kids change fast; it’s nice to have things that move with them,” says Stephanie Waddell, an interior designer at Agnes & Hoss who designed her son’s room with his growth in mind. She designs consciously and tries to find pieces that her son and family will use forever. “Buy things kids can grow with—it’s more environmentally responsible and interesting,” says Waddell. “Buy something that lasts— and it will last you for 20 years.” 44

05 TAKE SMALL RISKS

“The idea is to design something for right now, but can be taken out in the future,” says Goff. Goff recommends keeping cabinets, tiles and other expensive home features sophisticated and adult so you don’t have to make big changes frequently. But taking small risks like painting on the ceiling is a fun way to spice up a kid’s room without too much cost. “Paint is something easy to fix,” says Goff. “If they get tired of the orange, we can change it.” 06 ADD AN ACCENT WALL OR MURAL

Paint a mural or accent wall to your kid’s room to create eye-popping attention and evoke imagination in your little ones. Waddell took inspiration from the Flatirons to create a custom mural on her son’s wall. It’s now her son’s favorite part of the room. In Goff’s design, accent walls were implemented with different colors throughout the entire house for consistency.

07 ADD A CUSTOM PIECE

Another way to make your space original and interesting is to add custom pieces. Reach out to a local artisan who can make HMH Architecture + Interiors colorful kid’s room.

you custom desks, tables or other pieces of furniture that will be unique and last forever. Harriman even had her husband build the dress-up bin for the playroom. By using custom pieces, the space is made your own.

PLANET BLUEGRASS P

lanet Bluegrass has held festivals for over a quarter century and is responsible for

three of Colorado’s largest: Telluride Bluegrass, RockyGrass and the Rocky Mountain Folks

LYONS' BLUEGRASS FESTIVALS OFFER MUSIC-LOVERS A CHANCE TO CAMP, ENJOY THE OUTDOORS, WHILE BEING A SIGN OF A COMMUNITY'S STRENGTH TO REBUILD.

Festival. The last two are held on their ranch 25 minutes north of Boulder, in the small town of Lyons. The first RockyGrass festival was held in Lyons in 1992 on rented property. When the first two years of RockyGrass were successful, town officials made changes to their zoning laws, allowing the organization to purchase the ranch in 1994 to hold their events and music festivals. A section of the St. Vrain River runs through the ranch, adding to the already picturesque backdrop of the festival, where attendees camp out and enjoy the outdoors, tubing on the river, and music. But the river isn't always as serene as it appears; it has also brought colossal destruction upon the town. On the evening of September 11th, 2013, rain began to fall and did not stop until Lyons was under water. Displacing thousands of residents, destroying over 200 homes and taking one life, the St. Vrain River swept through the town, cutting residents off from the world for three days. Planet Bluegrass’ ranch was no exception to the damage. 48

After the flood, when neighbors’ houses were destroyed, and Planet Bluegrass’ central office floated downstream, it was the strength of the community to unite and rebuild that helped Lyons on the path to recovery, recalls Director of Communications for Planet Bluegrass and longtime Lyons resident Brian Eyster. Residents are still displaced, after homes that had stood for generations were swept away. Due to rising property rates in Lyons, it is difficult for displaced families to rebuild. Planet Bluegrass has partnered with Habitat for Humanity to help their neighbors move back home. The organization purchased commercial property and is working alongside the Town of Lyons to build three duplexes. As Eyster says, “These are our friends and neighbors, they work the festivals, whether volunteering or parking, they help us hold these events.” Only one week after the flood, Craig Ferguson, a co-owner, who was living on the ranch at the time, decided to rebuild the ranch in time for RockyGrass the following year. Eyster recalls, “We restored the office building one-by-one, removing feet of mud from each building, rebuilding foundations and walls. We held ‘office meetings’ next to huge piles of dirt, lots and lots of huge piles of debris, trees, rocks and dirt.” Support from festival goers and musicians was mighty, “Yonder Mountain String Band donated all the proceeds from one of their New Year’s shows to help with our rebuilding. By summertime, we became a symbol of Lyons’ resilience.” In recent years, the organizers have focused on making their events as environmentally-friendly as possible. The help from the community is what enabled Planet Bluegrass to make such drastic changes in sustainability in the last 20 years. Eyster describes the collaboration between the Lyons Middle-Senior High School Band programs one of their proudest. Students and parents of the band staff waste stations on festival grounds, instructing attendees “what is compost, what is recycling, etc. In return, we compensate all the volunteers by making a large “donation” to the band program every year. In the ensuing decade, we’ve added other large steps: eliminating single-use water bottles, requiring our vendors to use only compostable utensils and plates, requiring our food and beverage suppliers to purchase electric refrigerator trucks.” The organization also rewards festevarians that practice no trace camping and ask them to prepare their home before leaving for the festival (turning down thermostats etc.) Most recently the organization has purchased reusable bamboo-based dishware for vendors to hand out food at the Lyons-based festivals. When Planet Bluegrass launched the reusable plate program, The Stone Cup, a local coffee shop/café, offered their commercial dishwashing station to wash the thousands of plates each night. If you're looking for good music and an even better time, the annual RockyGrass festival is the place to be. The festivals held on the ranch have a capacity of 900-plus camping concert-goers. If large festivals are not your style, head out for one of the Wildfire Pavilion concerts, held throughout the fall and spring, which are smaller-scale. The festivals at the ranch are not only for enjoying music but also for community experiences in a breathtaking environment.

kitchen. The produce stood in for paint brushes and palette knives in a workshop at The Makerie’s April retreat in Boulder. At The Makerie’s creative retreats, materials of all kinds abound: fabric, paint, embroidery floss, yarn, rope and yes, even vegetables. You name it; someone is using it in one of the weekend’s workshop. Creative, hands-on projects are the bread and butter of Makerie retreats, but the events offer much more than just craft time. "We create an experience," says The Makerie Founder Ali DeJohn. "It's more than a creative class." Yoga, group hikes, a creative lounge, inspirational speakers and other self-care sessions create an all-around soul-nurturing experience. Nurturing her own creativity originally inspired DeJohn to create The Makerie. After a long career in event planning, she chose to stay home with her young children. “I’d always wanted to be a stay-at-home-mom, and I was so grateful that I could be,” she says. “But I didn’t realize that by only being a mom without my career, I would lose myself along the way.” To reconnect with herself, DeJohn attended a creative retreat, where she was surrounded by like-minded people and immersed in approachable, creative projects. “It was the first time since having my two babies that I remembered who I was,” she says. “I came home from the retreat filled up and so joyful. I had a new energy and felt like myself again.” While DeJohn loved her retreat experience, she took mental notes about what she liked and how she could make it better. And when she couldn’t find a similar event in her hometown of Boulder, she gave herself one year to create it.

“We send people back into the world feeling inspired,” DEJOHN says. “And that creates a happier world.”

62

Boulder Lifestyle | July 2017

In 2011, the first Makerie retreat became that reality. Now, The Makerie team organizes up to five events a year. While all Makerie events have a similar feeling, each one is different: Some have only a dozen people; some have up to 100. Many are in Colorado, but Makerie events have traveled to New York, Wisconsin and beyond. They've partnered with brands big and small (most notably, Sweet Paul Magazine and Crate and Barrel's children's brand The Land of Nod).

With more than 20 retreats under their belts, The Makerie team still genuinely enjoys the experience. For the group’s logistics coordinator, Krissa Bloom, it’s the connections — with oneself and with other makers — that make each event special. She loves meeting the guests who come from all over the world, and she emphasizes that “it is so important to take that time for yourself, let go and put all the

Now, Francis favors local farms and fiber mills over big-box stores, and she recycles yarn whenever possible. Her hardware is all natural, too: “Finding driftwood for the dowels [for wall hangings] is also a joyful part of the process for me, as I love foraging in nature to collect beautiful, unique weather-bleached pieces of wood.” While Francis says she’s “still learning and experimenting daily, and finding my own voice,” she has some big dreams for the future: perhaps a large-scale textile art installation, or a yarn-bombing project around town. Whatever the future may hold, she’s committed to reviving a love of fiber arts. “Part of my aim [has been] to bridge the divide between this ancient, somewhat dated art form, and bring it into the present with a modern design concept that also appeals to a younger generation,” she says. “I am grateful to be on this path.”

BIG CHILL ORIGINAL REFRIGERATOR AND APPLIANCES.

There are many questions we ponder in life like, What’s the meaning of life? Is the glass half empty or half full? &

Why is it worth it?

Here at Boulder Lifestyle, we can help with some of these big life questions. And when I mean some, I mean one thought-provoking question, and it’s why Boulder-based Big Chill Original Refrigerator and appliances are worth it. THEY’RE RETRO, 1950’S-INSPIRED APPLIANCES WITH MODERN AMENITIES.

Why not have a #tbt every day of the week? And if retro is not your thing (I really feel sorry for you) then they also have other era-inspired lines. Like the contemporary Pro Line, complete with

bold and subtle colors that make it not just an appliance but also a design piece. In 2015, they also launched the Classic Line throwing it way back to the early 1900s, industrial-chic movement. SAYING NO TO STAINLESS STEEL NEVER FELT SO GOOD.

We get it, we all like modern/nordic/clean/Kinfolk-esque style but that doesn’t mean you have to erase all color out of life. A pop of color here and there adds to modern decor and design. They also use a powder coat paint which is more resistant to scratching, fading, chipping and wearing than other finishes (and it’s environmentally-friendly). Did we also mention it’s okay to mix old with new? Pictured here is a 1911 Congress Park Bungalow with the Original Beach Blue refrigerator. IT’S LOCAL!

The main office is located right in the forefront of the Front Range in Boulder. The Big Chill line of refrigerators are also assembled in

Boulder. They use steel doors that are created using a traditional stamping process…just like they did back in the ’50s, and authentic chrome trim. Supporting a local business that keeps production close to home is definitely worth it. CHILL OUT - YOU’RE SAVING ENERGY.

The fridge may look like something straight out of an “I Love Lucy” rerun, but they take a 2017 approach to the environment. The Original and Retropolitan are both Energy Star Rated (Big Chill’s dishwashers too) and help us all save money and protect the environment through energy-efficient products and practices.

BRINGING EUROPEAN LUXURY TO BOULDER GOLDBRANCH ESTATES’ INTERIOR REDESIGN MELDS TIMELESS TUSCAN ARCHITECTURE WITH MODERN-DAY DESIGN. ARTICLE KELLI RUHL PHOTOGRAPHY HBK PHOTOGRAPHY

N

estled a stone’s throw from idyllic downtown Niwot, the Goldbranch Estates community is bringing “New-World European” living to Boulder Valley. Conceived in

2004, Goldbranch has come to fruition as a luxury community that calls to mind the graceful elegance of Tuscany, red-tiled roofs and all. After weathering the storm of a slow economy and keeping eyes on providing a stylish, valuable living space for buyers, Goldbranch has now rebranded in stunning fashion, thanks in large part to an interior design overhaul spearheaded by Goldbranch Developer Jennifer Budacz, and Luxury Realtor - with a great eye for design - Jennifer Egbert. In designing Goldbranch, Budacz sought to create a community that “embodies the charm and cohesiveness often found in eternal European villages.” Egbert’s redesign honored the “Old-World European” exteriors of Budacz’s original vision, while pulling inspiration from European and Californian Mediterranean homes of the 1920’s and incorporating their traits into a new, “fresh, open and bright design.” Egbert honed in on current design trends without moving away from those elements that provide “long-standing style.” As Egbert explains, “We want our buyers to experience the thrill of walking into their homes for the duration of their ownership. Pulled back style and sophistication run throughout each home…in general, I shy away from ‘trendy’ and lean heavily on the question, ‘What has stood the test of time?’” With this vision in mind, Egbert began by focusing on lightening and brightening - bringing that famous Colorado sunshine into the homes by “highlighting views, bouncing light off of walls and bringing the outdoors in.” Striking details like statuesque windows and glass walls went a long way in achieving this goal. To capitalize upon the sunlit layouts, Egbert sought out design elements she saw as lacking in the current Boulder real estate market, and filled those voids with accents like alluring light fixtures, sliding barn doors and practical yet beautiful kitchens and bathrooms. Though the homes’ interiors provide plenty of comfort, Goldbranch homes boast a number of enchanting reasons to move outside: grand fireplaces, tranquil fountains and enchanting courtyards, complete with stunning views of the Front Range, provide an escape from the daily grind. Budacz, who is both a developer and a resident of Goldbranch, describes the courtyards as providing “a ‘stay-cation’ style feel,” so true to the Mediterranean style that “most visitors ask if they ’ve just time-traveled to Tuscany.” The homes are not only beautiful, they are also sensible, meeting the needs of Boulder buyers with four-bedroom floor plans, some layouts also including bonus bedrooms or au pair suites. With exteriors replicating the sophisticated simplicity of the Tuscan countryside, and an interior revamp that has left the homes light, open, and inviting, Goldbranch Estates has successfully established a captivating community for those seeking luxury living on the Front Range.

Giving Back

Glimmer of Hope ARTICLE BRIANNA BLAIR PHOTOGRAPHY HOLLY RAE ESTROW

A LOCAL BOULDERITE KATE LACROIX FINDS HER CALLING BY SAVING A LIFE.

H

earts beat. Lungs inflate. Each organ is responsible for its vital role it plays in keeping you alive. But what happens when one

of those organs fail? For Kate Lacroix, 42, life is good. Self-employed for more than ten years, Lacroix can be deemed as a successful business owner. It wasn’t until Lacroix decided to check in on an old friend that she realized she was about to make a decision that would change her life forever. Lacroix’s relationship with Masa Holle started while Lacroix was studying at the University of Colorado. Holle was her private therapist; someone who Lacroix would go to when her life seemed to be spiraling out of control. Holle gave her a toolbox of skills to navigate the world. “I carried those things with me, and I feel like her teachings saved my life over and over again in ways both big and small,” says Lacroix. Lacroix logged onto Facebook to reconnect with Holle but offered to donate her kidney instead. “When I saw the Facebook page ‘Kidney for Masa,’ I instantly got the chills,” said Lacroix. “I knew I had to do it.” Unfortunately, Lacroix and Holle were not matches. Holle gained a kidney from a 19-year-old woman in Maryland who also decided to voluntarily donate her kidney. But that didn’t stop Lacroix. “I know my kidney went to someone in Ohio,” says Lacroix. “But in my mind, it went to Masa.” According to Lacroix, donating her kidney was meant to be her goal in life. “Everybody has their ‘thing’ in Boulder,” says Lacroix. “I don’t climb 14ers. I don’t do Ironman challenges. This was meant to be my thing.” After surgery, Boulder jeweler Todd Reed brought a dream of Lacroix’s to life, what started off as a health and safety measure turned into a work of art. “As I was going under, I was thinking about needing a medical bracelet,” says Lacroix. “So of course I managed to turn that thought into fine jewelry.” Upon waking up, Lacroix reached for her phone to text Reed and explained her vision. “The stones represent the living organs I have left to donate. The gemstone that was scooped out represents my donated kidney,” said Lacroix. Currently, Lacroix is working with legislation to pass a law providing tax compensation for organ donors.

“I don’t want my message to only be about organ donation,” says Lacroix. “Do something that surprises you.”

Local's Choice WILL AND CORAL FRISCHKORN - BOULDER LOCALS AND OWNERS OF CURED SHARE THEIR RECIPE TO A PICTURE-PERFECT SUMMER PICNIC. ARTICLE CAROLYN DAVIDSON

If Will and Coral Frischkorn know about anything, it's food. The Boulder locals and owners of Cured Boulder share their picks for creating the perfect summer picnic... • We often pick up our Stolen Hour Picnic, featuring a cheese and charcuterie box built to order with our cheesemonger’s favorites that day, a Demi-Bagutte, PocoDolce’s Chocolate Squares and a large bottle of San Pellegrino. • A Magnum of AIX Rose. As time in the sun under a tree happens to disappear mighty quickly, more than just a bottle can be a good thing. We also have regular bottles on hand just in case… • A Bottle Rocket cold-brew coffee from our roommates at Boxcar Coffee Roasters • For the true dessert fiends who need a little more than chocolate (or whose kids might not be quite there yet), a couple of cupcakes from Lucky’s Bakehouse are our favorite sweet treat extras. • Lastly, a quick stop at Grand Rabbits, a boulder institution for the sub 4’ crew, for a soccer ball and water balloons for park entertainment. 98
