Flavor of the Month

I

’m just going to go out on a limb here and admit that I’m one of those people who loves a good PSL (Pumpkin Spice Latte for the critics who don’t know). It’s more than just a marketing scheme created by Starbucks - I think. Here me out. We experience things through our senses, and a good ole fashion PSL is the flavor of the month. A little pumpkin, lots of spice and everything nice to do in Boulder. You're going to need the caffeine because a lot is going on. October means Month of Modern, DIY Halloween costumes, hidden hot springs, ICONic art with Art Movement Colorado, Boulder Burgundy Wine Fest and taking a digital detox in this fourth and final quarter. We explored all of these topics (and much more) to prep you for an eventful 31 days. So turn over a new leaf, pull out the PSL, the unofficial mascot of the October issue, and enjoy the flavors of fall.

HOW TO PACK A BOWL ARTICLE DANA LAPINEL PHOTOGRAPHY HOLLY ESTROW

Y

ou may notice more Poke (it’s pronounced POH-keh) restaurants popping up than build-

your-own-burrito bars. It’s basically the food trend of 2017 and the next gen of sushi. Here’s why we’re on board with this traditional Hawaiian dish: first and foremost, it’s healthy. These bowls are full of good fats sourcing Omega-3 from the fatty fish, avocados and nori. Omega-3 helps with anxiety, depression and overall heart health (your hair will thank you, too). Plus these bowls will also make you feel full so with one meal you’ll feel satisfied. No more munchies. Other reasons to love this food trend? They’re quick, easy, customizable and, most importantly, delectable. Chef Dane Hiett, who runs a luxury catering company and boutique private chef services called Chef Dane’s Kitchen (ChefDanesKitchen.com), shared three Poke bowl recipes sure to pack a punch. As the curator of regularly changing, deliciously unique menus, he knows a thing or two about flavor. “These recipes are about keeping it simple for the everyday home cook,” says Hiett. “For these three bowls, I used three different bases: white rice, quinoa, black forbidden rice. The idea is that you can really use any different grains you may have in the cabinet and add different proteins to it.” *CHEF DANE’S TIP

Puffed quinoa is as easy as cooking quinoa, spreading it out on a sheet tray and placing it in the oven as low as possible to blow air on it and dry it out. Finally, fry it in a small pot of oil. 40

DIGITAL DETOX (CON TI N U ED)

DIGITAL DETOX DOS Set boundaries. Do you need to have your work email on your phone? If we can’t disconnect from work, it makes it impossible for us to move on to the next aspect of our lives. If possible, leave work at work. Turn off the radio. Yes, there is something empowering about belting out your favorite song and not paying any mind to that the guy in the left lane thinks you’re off your rocker. But what about quiet? When has your brain been given the chance to ease out of productivity? Let car time be that opportunity. Put em’ to rest--so you can too! The truth is, we get stuck in a pigeon hole when bringing our phones to bed. All of a sudden, it’s an hour later, you’re stuck on social media or catching up on emails, and you’ve got monkey brain. Soaking up blue light before bed can be dangerous because it affects levels of the sleep-inducing hormone, melatonin, more than any other wavelength. In turn, the body’s natural clock shifts, affecting not only your body’s sleep cycle but also organ functions. Turn notifications ‘off’ and airplane mode ‘on.’ There’s something that happens in our brains when that notification pops up on our screens. It’s like a tick you have to satisfy in order to make it disappear. Eliminate time wasted checking empty alerts and empower yourself by choosing when your life has room for technology. Start small. Make little goals for yourself like only logging on social media once a day or unplugging for 24 hours. It takes baby steps to make a big change but it will be well worth it.

OM AT HOME Parent-Child yoga to help you slow down and reconnect one breath at a time. Advice from wife, mom and author of The Yoga Pants Years, Dana Wisniewski.

ARTICLE DANA WISNIEWSKI PHOTOGRAPHY HOLLY RAE ESTROW

W

ith school back in session, you may be searching for simple ways to slow down and reconnect with your

child in-between the homework, PTO meetings, soccer games and the fast-paced frenzy of life with little ones. If you are longing for a slower pace, as well as looking for ways to help your kids pause from the craziness of life, consider infusing parent-child yoga poses into your daily or weekly routine. With minimal setup - just a yoga mat and some floor space - yoga can help your child with focus, balance, and self-regulation (calming down). For parents, yoga is excellent for reducing stress and adding in flexibility and movement, a necessity if you sit down at the computer for large parts of the day. CONTINUED >

BENEFITS: Opens the child’s chest and

strengthens his/her posture. Lengthens and relaxes your lower back muscles. HOW TO: Sit on your heels and bend chest

2 / DOUBLE DOWN DOG

BENEFITS: Builds strength in the child’s up-

per body. Promotes focus and balance. HOW TO: The child steps up and rests their

feet on the low back of their grownup in Down Dog, making an “L” shape with their body. Modify: Have little ones simply do down dog under your down dog pose if they are too small.

3 / PARTNER GATE POSE

BENEFITS: Stretches the shoulders, waist

and back – areas that get sore from carrying heavy backpacks or sitting at a desk all day. HOW TO: Kneel on the floor about a leg’s

length apart from each other. Stretch your inner leg out to the side towards each other, and press the foot to the floor. Lift your outside arm and lean towards each other until you can grab each other’s hands. Hold and breathe come back to kneeling position. Switch sides and repeat the steps.

4 / PARTNER TREE POSE

BENEFITS: Improves balance and promotes

concentration and cooperation. HOW TO: Stand next to each other. Hold hands

or wrap your arms around each other’s waist. Shift weight to stand on your inner leg. Lift the outside leg and place the sole of your foot above or below your knee. Reach your outer arm up to the sky. Switch sides and repeat the steps. Modify: For little ones, face each other and hold hands as you mirror the pose.

BENEFITS: Strengthens the abdominals, hip

flexors and spine. Stretches the back of the arms, shoulders and hamstrings. Aids in digestion. Promotes cooperation. HOW TO: Sit facing one another. Bend your

knees, press soles of feet together, and grasp each other’s hands or forearms. Stay here for a few breaths. For full boat, slowly lean back while keeping feet together, lengthen legs and extend feet upward.

6 / NAMASTE

End your practice by honoring the light in yourself and others – you might describe it your child as the space inside of you that is wonderful and unique. BENEFITS: Fosters gratitude, stillness and love. HOW TO: Sit up tall, back to back. Bring hands

together at your heart for a few breaths. Slowly bend forward and say “Namaste.”

Tips for your home practice: • Practice outdoors if possible. • Ask your child if he/she would like to dedicate the class to anyone. • Play inspiring or relaxing music. • Ask your child how he/she feels before class as compared to after class. • Make a few of the calming poses part of your regular nighttime routine to help your child wind down. 68

MORE THAN JUST LIGHT BEER WIBBY BREWING EXTENSIVE SELECTION OF LAGERS SHOWCASES THE STYLE'S TRUE COMPLEXITY WITH AN AMERICAN TWIST ON A GERMAN CLASSIC. ARTICLE RILEY COWING | PHOTOGRAPHY POPPIES + PAISLEY PHOTOGRAPHY

T

he beginnings of Wibby Brewing were ignited with a conversation at High Sierra Music Festival in 2013 between college friends

and now co-founders Ryan Wibby and Ted Risk. At the time of the festival, Wibby had been brewing professionally for nearly to fifteen years and had spent time in Berlin, Germany studying with some of the best lager brewers. Risk asked Wibby when he was going to open his own place and the duo became extremely excited discussing the prospect of their own brewery. They decided to revisit the topic in a more tame environment post-festival, and once they put pen to paper the following week, they were able to conceptualize what we have come to know and love as Wibby Brewing since September 2015. Their beers are all within the lager family, but their challenge is to showcase the diversity in what a lager can taste like. They have all their bases covered with a Dunkel, Helles and the Wibby IPL to name a few. Their tagline: anything an ale can do, a lager can do better. Risk notes that while people usually hear lager and think “light beer,” Wibby’s selec-

tion proves that there can be more variety and complexity in this style. “We start with the principles of German style lager brewing and then put the American craft twist on it,” Risk says. “Not all our beers adhere to the [German Beer Purity Law], which says you can only use water, malt, hops and yeast in beer. Some of [our beers adhere] but some of them don’t…so we build off the principles and stan-

MATERIALS:

2/3 yard of fabric A sheet of felt Three inches of sew-in Velcro

Coming Soon!

A needle and tread Step 1. Cut the fabric into the following pieces - 2 22 x 11 strips - 2 6 x 12 strips (longer for older children) - 1 circle 7 inches in diameter (this is done by cutting a 7 x 7 square, folding it in fourths, and rounding the corner) Step 2. Cut the tail shape. On the large strips, mark a spot 4 inches away from the edge on each long side. On the far short side, make two marks 4.5 inches away from either side. Connect two marks diagonally along the long side (using a ruler to make a straight line) and cut. Repeat along the other long side. Step 3. Cut the spikes. The spikes should be an inch or so apart, and should start out large and get smaller. Freehand a design on paper or directly on your felt and cut. One sheet of felt will not be long enough for the entire tail, but cutting the first row of spikes will create a second inverse row which can be added. Step 4. Lay the spikes facing down on the right side of one piece of the tail fabric. You will be sewing with a half inch seam allowance and you want to sew above the strip that connects the spikes so that they appear to be separate, so be aware of this when positioning them. Lay the second side of the tail on top, right side down. Pin.

Ideal for Your Cars, RVs, Hobbies & Small Business

D®Äçã Ý &ÙÊà Êç½ Ù Ι >Êç®Ýò®½½ (ON US36 @ WADSWORTH)

Step 5. Sew along the spike side of the tail with a half inch seam allowance. Curve sightly around the bottom part of the tail, and then sew along the other side for about four inches. Backstitch, then skip four to five inches, and sew the rest of this side of the tail. Step 6. Position the Velcro near the end of the waist strap, about 3/4 an inch from the long side and 1 inch from the short side. Sew. Repeat with the other strap. Step 7. Fold the strap in half, wrong sides together, and sew down two sides, beginning with the side nearest the Velcro. Leave the opposite short side unsewn. Turn the straps out and press. Step 8. Quarter the tail by matching the seams and folding it in half. Mark these halves with pins. Insert the straps at these halfway points and sew in. Step 9. Pin the circle, wrong sides together, to the thick end of the tail. Quartering both the circle and tail will help you match them up. Sew.

early detection TAKING STOCK OF YOUR BREAST HEALTH AWARENESS ARTICLE LISA VAN HORNE

B

reast cancer today is just as prevalent, if not more so than it’s ever been. According to the American Cancer Society, over 250,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be or have

already been diagnosed in women in 2017. The good news, however, is that there are over three million breast cancer survivors in the United States alone. With advancements in treatments and genetic screening as well as a younger portion of the population taking ownership of their breast health, breast cancer is a disease that can be detected and treated early to great effect. During Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, Dr. Winfield Hartley, a breast cancer reconstructive surgeon with Boulder Plastic Surgery, urges both women and men to take stock of how they’re keeping track of their breast health and to commit to vigilance in their breast health awareness. “The Front Range is an area where breast cancer diagnoses are particularly prevalent,” says Dr. Hartley. “Unlike some forms of cancer, breast cancer development is very multifactorial, and there are many different risk factors and indicators.” According to Dr. Hartley, the key to breast cancer surveillance is vigilant self-monitoring and routine screening mammograms. From the symptoms most commonly associated with breast cancer, such as lumps in the breast area or armpits, there is a myriad of other breast changes that could also be indicators. Any changes to the look and feel of your breasts should be brought to the attention of a health care provider, including breast skin changes, dimpling, nipple inversion or discharge, changes in shape or appearance, or general tenderness. Hartley notes that it’s never too early to be aware of your breast health. After the trauma of a breast cancer diagnosis and the ordeal of treatment, Hartley’s team at Boulder Plastic Surgery works to help patients remove the stigma of breast cancer and put it in the rear view mirror with a variety of breast reconstruction options. Boulder Plastic Surgery began in the early 1980s with the goal of being a community-focused practice where all plastic surgery needs could be fulfilled. Today, Drs. Hartley, Maxhimer and Kuisle focus their efforts largely on breast reconstruction procedures, with the aim of making patients look and feel like themselves again after breast cancer. For more resources on breast cancer, visit the American Cancer Society website. *If you notice any changes in your breast health, bring them to the attention of your health care provider immediately. “After radiation and two lumpectomies, Dr. Hartley worked closely with my general surgeon from the very beginning to produce results that were better than I ever imagined. I feel blessed to have crossed paths with Dr. Hartley and his truly wonderful nurse, Summer.” - Patient Irene Hesse

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I BE CHECKING MY BREASTS? For both women and men, self-breast exams should be performed on a monthly basis.

According to the American Cancer Society, women should have mammogram screenings: • Annually between the ages of 40 and 54 • Every two years after the age of 55 If you have genetic tendencies toward breast cancer or a family history, talk with a health care provider about beginning these screenings even earlier.
