ith the holiday season in full swing, I often reminisce to family traditions we had while growing up. Christmas brunch at my parents was always a highlight, as my mom would cook a huge feast of all our favorites. The only downfall was that I had to beg and plead for a reasonable amount of frosting on the cinnamon rolls. Another (not so proud) tradition of mine, was to fake illness, so I could stay home from school and hunt for the presents “Santa” hid. If you grew up in the 90s, and you were a boy, you probably had the Nintendo video game, Super Tecmo Bowl. As a card carrying sports fanatic, this particular game was one of the most highly anticipated releases in Nintendo history. In one of my finest heist jobs, I located the game my parents favorite hiding spot, carefully cut the cellophane with a razor blade, and played for eight hours straight one day. When my folks were to be heading home from work, I strategically put the game back in the box, and used a tiny bit of tape to make the packaging look intact. Now that Kate and I have young children, there is nothing quite like seeing how excited kids are on Christmas morning. When asking our 5-year-old son what he wanted for Christmas, I had to plant the seed that he should ask for a slot car electric race track. I may be pushing age 40, but who doesn’t love playing with a remote control race track? Obviously, there is so much more to this season than receiving. It is an honor to live in a community that is full of so many selfless individuals. Whether donating food to a pantry, money to a cause, gifts to a family in need, or simply volunteering time, the citizens of Boulder County certainly know how to answer the call. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, from our family to yours!

Built on one-anda-half acres at 9,000-foot elevation in the Rockies, this Boulder County home is a direct result of the collaboration between Arch11 and Hammerwell Incorporated. The home was designed to feel intimate yet still be able to comfortably accommodate extra guests. BUILT ON A FOUNDATION

With a desire to have a retreat nestled into the landscape and reflect old Colorado mountain living yet still embrace modern sensibilities and conveniences, the owners were sure they wanted anything but a “monument.” They desired a simple, cozy getaway with a flexible layout so they could invite another couple to join them for a weekend and not feel cramped. ENTICING INTERIOR

The living area is open with pieces of exposed structure and southern views. Poured concrete floors with an applied stain and wax create simple, low-maintenance natural flooring that provides a functional mass for distributing the radiant heat. A small loft is accessed by a stairway and serves as a place to curl up with a book and view the Continental Divide with its ever-changing weather patterns. Green building is exemplified by the use of cement board for gable-end siding, honed stone countertops, reclaimed wood flooring, wool carpet, composite decking, dead-standing logs and steel roof panels. Perched on the edge of a ridge, dwellers are treated with stunning views of the lake below. Using a hybrid of traditional log construction coupled with cost-effective wood frame, the perimeter walls are mostly constructed of 12â&#x20AC;? diameter, hand-hewn logs. All of the lumber used was either sustainably harvested or recycled. Large expanses of glass help weave the old and new together. Exceptional indoor air quality was achieved by ensuring all materials in the home are VOC-free. The final rust-colored palette of the corrugated steel roof is still a work-in-progress of Mother Nature. And smart house features allow the owners to control the lighting and radiant heating system remotely as well as monitor security.

There should be eight pieces hanging. • Measure down 20 cm and tie two adjacent pieces of rope together and continue this around so you have four knots at the same level. • Measure down 10 cm below the knots and tie one piece of one rope to the other until you have eight knots all the same level. • Gather up all the eight pieces at the bottom and tie a knot. • Arrange an air plant atop moss or choose soil and a few rocks with a succulent in a glass vase or a pot. • Slip your pot into the holder resting the base on the big knot at the bottom. LEMON LAVENDER SOAP INGREDIENTS

• Lemon and Lavender Clear Soap- Melt & Pour Soap Recipe • 20 oz Clear Melt and Pour Soap Base, cut into 1-inch chunks • 30 drops Lemon Essential Oil • 10 drops Lavender Essential Oil • A few Calendula flowers • A few Lavender flowers • Soap Molds ///DIRECTIONS:

Place the soap base in a glass heat proof container and set it in a double boiler filled with steaming water, over medium-high heat. When the soap base is melted, add the Lemon and Lavender essential oil. Pour a little of the soap base into the mold and press in the flowers. Let the soap cool until there is a thick film and gently fill the mold the rest of the way, with the remaining soap. Wait for about 1 hour then gently un-mold your soap. Directions and supplies available for cinnamon and sweet orange goats milk soap as well as coco peppermint goats milk soap.

BERGAMOT LAVENDER LIP BALM INGREDIENTS:

• 4 fl. oz Plantain Infused Olive Oil or other carrier oil of choice. Some options include Macadamia Nut, Jojoba or Almond Oils. • 1 oz net wt. Beeswax Pearls • 48 drops Bergamot Essential Oil & 20 drops Lavender Essential Oil • 20 Lip Balm Tubes ///DIRECTIONS:

In a heat safe measuring cup with a pour spout, add the oil and beeswax pearls together. Place in a double boiler (this can simply be a cooking pot with a shallow amount of water in it). Place the measuring cup into the water while it is still room temperature. Slowly heat the water on low and mix frequently. When all of the beeswax has melted, remove from heat. Drop the essential oils into your oil mixture. Mix well. Carefully pour the mixture into your lip balm containers, filling all the way to the top. Allow the mixture to cool and harden. Cap & Enjoy. Yields approximately 20 lip balm tubes. 64

here’s nothing quite like an old-fashioned cookie swap. So in order to welcome the spirit of the season we decided to host our very own holiday cookie exchange. And what better way to practice an age-old tradition then taking it back to 1959 and adding a retro spin. As we discovered, the recipe for the most delicious party of the year is some good friends, seasonal-cider cocktails, a touch of champagne, and most importantly cookies – lots of cookies. Lemon bars, Grandma’s snowballs, chocolate bark, and good ole’ gingerbread all made an appearance, and many other cookie varieties that are a great addition to anyone’s recipe book. Vintage opaque pink cake stands and flower-patterned cookie trays were once again filled to the brim with cookies and their crumbles. Eager friends stood nearby always keeping one eye on the glowing treat display as guest started arriving one by one. Our favorite holiday tunes, as varied as the cookie selection, got us all in the mood for the merrymaking. Eventually the chit chatter of conversation was hushed as a toast was made, champagne popped and then the tasting began. 10 oz chocolate chips (at least semi-sweet, preferably 60%) 1/2 c. freeze dried raspberries, crushed 1/2 c. cacao nibs, crushed Melt chocolate in a double boiler over medium heat. Stir in raspberries & cacao nibs and spread on wax paper on a cookie sheet. Place in freezer for approximate. CHEWY GINGER COOKIES

2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour 2 1/2 tsp ground ginger 1 1/12 tsp. baking soda 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon 1/2 tsp freshly ground nutmeg 1/2 tsp kosher salt 1/4 tsp fresh ground black pepper 3/4 dark brown sugar 1/3 cup vegetable shortening (trans-fat free) 1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temperature 1 large egg 1/2 cup blackstrap molasses 1 tsp vanilla extract 1/2 cup finely chopped crystallized ginger 1 cup raw turbinado sugar Preheat oven to 350. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. Whisk first 7 ingredients (flour through black pepper) in a medium bowl. Using an electric mixer on medium-high speed, beat brown sugar, shortening, and butter in a large bowl, scraping down sides halfway through beating, until light and fluffy. Reduce mixer speed to low. Add egg, molasses, and vanilla. Beat just to blend. Add flour mixture; beat on low speed to blend. Mix in crystallized ginger by hand (dough will be very soft and sticky). Place raw sugar in a shallow bowl. Using 2 tablespoons, scoop out dough (1 tablespoon at a time) into the raw sugar; turn to coat well. Roll into a ball and transfer to the baking sheet. Repeat with remaining dough. Bake cookies, rotating the sheets halfway through, until edges are firm and centers appear cracked, 10-12 minutes. Transfer cookies to wire racks and let cool. Can be made 3 days ahead. Store airtight at room temperature between sheets of parchment or waxed paper. CONTINUED >

Like a lot of artists, working on developing a consistent style is always a goal and a challenge. I want to keep a recognizable look from one piece to the next and wrap it together wit h a type of execution and craftsmanship that I find engaging.. and hopefully others will as well. DESCRIBE THE EVOLUTION OF YOUR ART PRACTICE IN YOUR OWN WORDS?

As far back as I can remember I’ve liked making things. Building model airplanes but putting the parts in places that weren’t in the instructions. In college, the focus was on sculpture, kinetic sculpture and now the paintings are a combination of all that. They’re flat but the process is more akin to sculpture than traditional painting technique, and I’m still putting things in places that are unexpected ... I hope. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SIGNATURE STYLE AND USE OF COLOR? WOULD YOU SAY IT IS ABSTRACT AND IF SO, HAS IT ALWAYS BEEN THIS WAY OR HAVE THERE BEEN DRAMATIC CHANGES OVER THE YEARS?

Graphic, kinetic, layered …. this is what makes up the basic style, what pulls the viewer in. I do what is considered a painting but they could also be thought of as flat sculptures because they have depth, painted sides and a finish unlike most paintings. The evolution has been in complexity. More layering which creates a greater sense of depth. A more balanced image that integrates the various components into a unified piece more so than when I started. WHAT IS YOUR PROCESS WHEN STARTING A NEW PIECE?

There probably aren’t many methods that are unique. Artist are always building on someone else’s style and I’m part of that when it come to images. My process is a bit out of the ordinary. It involves sawing, hammering and sanding - not your usual painting terms. I build my own panels from lumber yard materials and use paint that comes from the hardware store. I build up layers of paint and then sand most of it off; leaving marks and shading that would be hard to create with a brush. These steps are often repeated until the overall background comes to life. Next, more graphic elements are 86

Exactly when and where did it begin? I’m not sure, seems like it’s always been a part of me. added … metal, painted numbers and hard edge circles and shapes that are in contrast with the background. Between most of the layers I add a clear coat so that once completed the piece has a smooth, almost glazed surface. Not what one would expect from something that looks very rough. FROM WHERE DO YOU DRAW YOUR INSPIRATION?

I actually was a fine arts major at CU. After graduation and living in Denver and later Aspen, I was on a pretty good trajectory doing sculpture work, mostly kinetic pieces. Then I became involved in a short film project which morphed into a 30-year career. I guess one could say that I went from kinetic sculpture to kinetic images. Thirty years of looking through a camera lens can stockpile a lot of images. Those images, in a more abstracted form, started to pour out 12 years ago when I hung up my camera. otel restaurants typically get overlooked by a city’s residents. For one, locals may not know about the eateries because they retire to their own homes rather than to a hotel room. And for another, hotel food doesn’t exactly have a sparkling, must-try reputation. For those reasons, you may not have heard of Spruce Farm & Fish, housed in the historic Hotel Boulderado. But even among Pearl Street’s multitude of standout restaurants, Spruce holds its own and is worth a taste. It’s a little ironic that out-of-towners would have the heads-up on one of the city’s best kept restaurant secrets. Spruce advertises itself as being fresh and locally focused – de rigueur in today’s restaurant climate – and its Boulderado home certainly walks the walk. The Hotel Boulderado has been locally-owned since its debut in 1909, so they are no strangers to supporting local businesses.

Spruce, which occupies the space long held by Q’s Restaurant, embodies that spirit by using Boulder County-based farms and vendors, like Silver Canyon coffee, Red Wagon farm, Haystack Mountain dairy and Madhava Natural Sweeteners, among many others. For the ‘fish’ part of their name, they partner with sustainable oyster farms and fisheries to bring in fresh, ocean-friendly catches. The menu changes with the season, but the cornmeal fried oysters appetizer ($10) is always available. The creamy tabasco remoulade kicks up the little suckers, while the cornmeal batter makes them accessible to even the oyster-averse (because everything’s better fried, right?). During happy hour (5-7 p.m.) they go for $7, which makes them a steal at just about $1 a piece. Entrees are a good mix of the traditional and unexpected. On the traditional side, there’s the crispy skinned half chicken ($18) with fingerling potato salad and green beans. The chicken is juicy, flavorful and pairs nicely with the smokiness of the bacon in the vinegar-based potato salad. The unexpected is the crispy whole bass served with red potato hash and orange fennel slaw ($25). As a general rule, if a whole fish preparation is on a menu, it’s a good idea to order it. Besides the flavors you get from it being cooked with all of its parts, it’s an experience.

There are the eyes looking up at you, the bones to dodge and the crispy fins and tail suspended in time. It’s like science class in food form. For some reason, crispy fish doesn’t appear on American menus all too often (it’s a French favorite). But it’s a delicious way to seal in a white-fleshed fish’s moisture while offering a little bit of fat for a richer flavor. Spruce’s version is great, especially with the pool of Romesco sauce under it that gives a jolt of smoky, peppery heat. One of the menu highlights is a side. The Brussels sprouts with Sriracha soy glaze ($6) are among the best I’ve ever had – and I’m a sprout devotee. Warning to those with spice-sensitive palates: they bring the heat. Cocktails are inventive and well-balanced. The Hibiscus ($11) is a slightly sweet blend of gin, hibiscus simple syrup, grapefruit juice and rhubarb bitters. Tea Thyme ($8) tastes like it sounds – house-infused sweet tea vodka with fresh thyme, simple syrup and soda. There’s also a nice selection of wines by the glass, with most in the $7-9 range. It’s nice to see hotels investing in their restaurants and putting out food that rivals the city’s best. The St. Julien’s Jill’s Restaurant and Panzano inside Denver’s Hotel Monaco are also doing a great job. And hey, if you have one too many Hibiscus cocktails while at Spruce, you’ve got a bed waiting right upstairs. December 2015 | Boulder Lifestyle

impact or ESG (environment, social and governance) investing. Too many investors are still on the sidelines because of myths that have not yet been fully dispelled. It’s time to clear the air and get with the investing trend. THE REALITY We all invest so that we can make a financial return on our money. That’s the

clear-cut definition of investing. Some still believe that their returns will be lower if they chose sustainable investing but study after study has proven this is not true. Actually, at the start of 2014, sustainable strategies had grown to $6.57 trillion, an increase of 78 percent from two years prior. It is easy to create a diversified portfolio with competitive returns that is sustainable. IMPACT I have also heard people tell me their actions are too small to make a differ-

ence, or they question whether investing this way actually stimulates change. One truth I definitively know is that what we do with our money has an impact. Just because you may not be following the impact your portfolio is having, does not mean it is reflecting the issues that are most important to you. In fact, you could be very surprised. Just because you may not be guiding your impact, does not mean it is not happening; because guess what - it is. Start focusing and getting guidance to have your portfolio reflect the issues that are important to you. BE SUSTAINABLE in your portfolio and utilize ESG.

• Avoidance: Most investments will screen out the most egregious offenders for the issues that are important to you. • Integration: More and more managers are identifying the best actors in each asset class and sector; supporting companies that are doing business in a responsible manner. • Active Ownership: Proxy Voting, Advocacy and Engagement: Since companies are not perfect, this approach allows your investment manager to vote on and file shareholder resolutions on issues such as the environment, child free labor, and weapons production, to name a few. • Community Investing: Channels investments into low income and other underserved communities provide capital, credit and training that these communities would otherwise lack. • Ask the Experts: And as with any endeavor, it is important to have a partner that brings expertise, experience and a shared vision to the table. I have found that integrating individual’s social criteria alongside expert financial analysis will provide you with a diversified portfolio with competitive performance that will help move the needle on issues that are important to you. The clock is ticking and we have too many problems and too little time to address them (I mean, who doesn’t?) Where you can start is with your investments. Your portfolio is a powerful tool for change. Not only will you feel better about how you are invested, but also you will help spotlight issues and raise them for debate, moving corporations down a more sustainable and overall successful path. 94
