A partir de este momento comenzó su labor administrativa como una de las coordinadoras de ESOL y actualmente se desempeña como Coordinadora Bilingüe de Título I del Departamento de Programas Federales del Distrito Escolar de Charleston. Celina en su tierra natal, Perú, obtuvo un bachiller en Ciencias Sociales, sin embargo al llegar a Estados Unidos, necesitó 3 años extras de estudio para convalidar su título, lo cual hizo en el College of Charleston, obteniendo su certificación de maestra en español. Siempre ha trabajado con niños hispanos, pendiente de que mejoren sus notas y de que las familias puedan superarse por encima de cualquier obstáculo, ofreciendo también su ayuda voluntaria como intérprete. Aunque Celina no se otorga crédito, ella contribuyó través de su labor y entrega a incrementar la concientización de los directores de escuelas para contratar profesores bilingues, ayudando a los padres de familia que no saben inglés. Cuando escuchamos del Programa Abrazos de alfabetización familiar, pensamos en Celina, originalmente fundado por el MUSC y Trident Literacy Association, actualmente es coordinado por Anthony. Su labor comenzó cuando fue invitada a hacer una presentación a las madres, y al enterarse que se iba a cerrar por falta de financiamiento, no permitió que desapareciera luchando para conseguir lo que se necesitaba, es por ello que desde hace 6 años es su coordinadora. Pero esta gran mujer, no solo es Coordinadora Bilingüe y del Programa Abrazos, también es coordinadora del Programa de Migrantes que ofrece clases a los niños cuyos padres vienen a trabajar temporalmente en el campo, además trabaja con directores de varias escuelas, supervisando el uso de financiamiento para educación suplementaria. Celina se siente una mujer realizada cambiando la vida de nuestra comunidad hispana y está orgullosa de representarnos con un cariño igual para todos. In her native Peru, Celina received a Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, but upon arriving to the United States, was required to fulfill an extra three years of study to validate her title, which she completed at the College of Charleston, obtaining her Spanish teaching certificate. She has always worked with Hispanic kids, attentive that they improve their grades and that their families are able to overcome any obstacle, also offering her help as a volunteer interpreter. Though Celina doesn’t give herself credit, through her work and dedication, she has helped to increase awareness amongst school directors to contract bilingual teachers, helping the parents of families who don’t know English. When we heard about the Hugs Family Literacy Program, we thought about Celina. Originally founded by the MUSC and Trident Literacy Association, today it is coordinated by Anthony. Her work started when she was invited to make a presentation to the mothers, and when she found out that the program was going to close due to lack of funding, she refused to allow it to disappear, fighting to get necessary financing. It is because of this that she has been the program’s coordinator for the last six years. This grand lady is not only the Bilingual Coordinator and head of the Hugs Program, she is also coordinator for the Migrant Program that offers classes to children whose parents come to work temporarily in the fields, and also works with the directors of various schools, supervising the use of financing for supplementary education. Celina feels fulfilled by changing the life of our Hispanic community and is proud to represent us with an equal care for everyone.
