solamente podíamos hablar a través de la ventana que nos dividía y yo pude ver que ella era una mujer que estaba muy asustada, pues para personas como Lorena y su familia, que nunca han estado en problemas, nuestro sistema legal puede asustarles. Después de conversar algunos minutos, yo supe que era inocente. Ahora ella puede mirar esos 8 meses con amargura y sufrimiento, puede verlo así o puede decidir verlo como una nueva oportunidad de darle gracias a Dios y a todos los que hemos ayudamos para que esté aquí con nosotros, y la mejor manera de agradecer es usar lo que ella aprendió para ayudar a otros”. Lorena está inmensamente agradecida por todos quienes ayudaron en su caso, y nos comenta: “Cuando uno está metido donde yo estaba, ahí en la cárcel, uno tiene más amor a la vida, más confianza en sí mismo. A veces por ser hispano, crees que no vas a lograr salir, pero nadie debe darse por vencido, tenemos que confiar en Dios y luchar. Enseñé a muchas mujeres en la cárcel jugar cartas al estilo de mi país. Aprendí que la vida hay que valorarla y que todos somos iguales. En la cárcel fue la primera vez que tuve amistad con alguien estadounidense, aunque yo casi no hablaba inglés, y fue una gran amistad. Debemos tratar de aprender de las otras personas, y las otras personas aprenderán de ti. Tengo una madre que ha dado todo por mí, pero quiero aprender a ser adulta, luchar por mí misma y ayudar a los hispanos, porque unidos podemos. Mi abogado, quien logró me quitaran los cargos, es estadounidense, y se portó como un padre defendiendo a su hija. Todos podemos ayudarnos a luchar por nuestros derechos y tener confianza en ello. Si uno lo desea puede lograr lo que sea. Intenta y lo verás”.
her family, who have never been in trouble, our legal system can be very frightening. After talking a few minutes, I knew she was innocent. Now she can look at those 8 months with bitterness and suffering, or she can decide to view it as a new opportunity to give thanks to God and to everybody that has helped her to be here with us, and the best way to thank everyone is to use what she learned to help others. Lorena is immensely grateful to everyone who helped in her case, and she says: "When you're stuck where I was there in the prison, you grow more love for life, more confidence in yourself. Sometimes just for being Hispanic, you think you are not going to make it out, but no one should give up, we have to trust in God and fight. I taught many women in prison how to play cards in my country’s style. I learned to appreciate my life and that everyone is equal. It was the first time I became friends with American women, even though I hardly spoke English, but it was a great friendship. We must try to learn from others, and others will learn from you. I have a mother who has given everything for me, but I want to learn to be an adult, to fight for myself and help Hispanics, because together we can do it. My lawyer, who managed to have the charges dropped, is American, and acted like a father defending his daughter. We can help each other fight for our rights and have confidence in doing it.
