Welcome to the 2015 season

W

elcome to the 2015 golf season, as once again the eyes of the golfing world will fall upon beautiful Wisconsin.

State residents are probably getting used to the attention Wisconsin has garnered on the global golf scene over the last 15 years or so, and if they haven’t, they probably should. In less than two decades, Wisconsin has evolved from the land of cheese and brats, beer and cows into a truly world class golf destination.

(But you can still get a brat and a beer after your round.)

The huge event on the calendar this season is the 97th PGA Championship, the third PGA Championship to be played at Whistling Straits and Wisconsin’s fourth overall. (See Page 14.) The championship, boasting what is annually the deepest pool of talent among the four major championships, continues an impressive run of major events in Wisconsin. Soon to follow are the 2017 U.S. Open at Erin Hills and the 2020 Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits.

The two tournaments most Wisconsin players would love to win are also visiting marquee facilities this year. The Wisconsin State Open will be played at University Ridge in August, while the Wisconsin State Amateur will be played at Erin Hills in July. (See Page 16.)

The Wisconsin State Golf Association now boasts an annual schedule of more than 70 amateur tournaments, and participation in those events has never been higher. In 2014, the WSGA added a new Mid-Amateur Championship to the schedule. This year, an additional qualifier for the State Amateur will be held and the WSGA Senior Tour and Net Partners series have both been expanded. (See Page 10 for tournament schedules.)

But you don’t have to be a scratch player to participate. The Net Partners series – in which handicaps are used to calculate scores – is a gentle first step into competitive golf, as is the annual State Net Amateur Championship.

Martin, Rory, Bubba set sights on The Straits

M

artin Kaymer made it look easy last June when he waltzed to an eight-stroke victory at the U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina. Leading after each of the four rounds, the stoic German surprised many with his solid tee-togreen game, his silky putting touch and his mettle.

But anyone who saw Kaymer win his first major championship at Whistling Straits in 2010 shouldn’t have been shocked to see him win another at Pinehurst. All the signs were there – from the visual resemblances between Pinehurst No. 2 and the Straits Course to Kaymer’s uncanny ability hole putts under pressure.

In related news from the 2014 season, Bubba Watson, the man Kaymer beat in a playoff to win the 2010 PGA Championship, captured his second Masters title last April. And Rory McIl-

roy – who tied for third, one stroke out of the Kaymer-Watson playoff at Whistling Straits – had a pretty fair season, too, winning the final two majors of 2014. McIlroy will be feted at Whistling Straits in August as the defending champion.

In other words, the field for the 97th PGA Championship – the third to be played at Whistling Straits along Wisconsin’s Lake Michigan shore – is already shaping up nicely, with the primary protagonists from five years ago playing great golf.

The 97th PGA Championship is scheduled for Aug. 13-16.

Many will remember the 2010 PGA Championship for the man who didn’t make the playoff. Dustin Johnson played fabulously for 71 holes, but he missed the 18th fairway on Sunday, grounded his club in a bunker and was assessed a two-stroke penalty,

What many no doubt forget was the impressive manner in which Kaymer, then 25 years old, won his first major championship. Kaymer rolled in a downhill 15-foot par putt on the 72nd hole to match Watson at 11 under par. He finished at even par in their three-hole, aggregate-score playoff, tapping in for a safe bogey on the final hole after Watson found a hazard in front of the 18th green.

Later, in the media tent at Whistling Straits, Kaymer revisited that key par putt on 18.

“For my future,” he said, “I think it’s very important that I know whatever

happens, that I can make those very, very important putts.”

The future is now for Kaymer, and many of those memories from 2010 came flooding back at last June’s U.S. Open at Pinehurst. Kaymer’s brilliant putting was on display again, as were his steely nerves. There was also this little matter of “the look” of the courses where he claimed his two biggest wins.

“With all due respect, (Pinehurst) isn’t as pretty as Whistling Straits.”

Kaymer was asked last June about the similarities between The Straits and Pinehurst No. 2, which recently underwent a renovation by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw that replaced massive sections of rough with sand waste areas. The unkempt terrain beyond the fairway grass is gorgeous to behold but wicked to play from, particularly if an unlucky bounce leaves a ball up against a clump of grass.

The challenges at Pinehurst No. 2 are like those on the Straits Course, where master architect Pete Dye created massive sand dunes pockmarked with humps and hollows.

Beyond the fairways, grass grows here and there, but not everywhere.

Kaymer admitted he sees similarities between the two courses, although he said The Straits is more receptive to hitting driver. And there’s another big difference.

“With all due respect,” he said, “(Pinehurst) isn’t as pretty as Whistling Straits.”

Kaymer has been on a roll recently.

In addition to his U.S. Open title, he captured the 2014 Players Championship. He also starred on another European Ryder Cup team in September – beating Watson, 4 and 2, in his

Sunday singles match – after winning the decisive point for Team Europe at the 2012 Ryder Cup. And he beat Watson again in a playoff at the PGA Grand Slam of Golf in October.

The Straits’ first PGA Championship in 2004 also came to a thrilling playoff finish with another international winner. Vijay Singh of Fiji held off Justin Leonard and Chris DiMarco in extra holes to capture the 86th PGA Championship.

The title seemed to be in Leonard’s hands with a few holes to play, but he bogeyed the par-5 16th and the par-4 finishing hole to slip back into a tie with DiMarco and Singh. Leonard’s approach shot to the 18th green in regulation was particularly galling, as it came up about a yard short of the putting surface. Had it traveled that extra yard, Leonard would have faced a relatively east two-putt for the title.

But it didn’t, and he failed to convert the up-and-down.

In the three-hole playoff, Singh crushed a 330-yard drive on the first playoff hole, the short par-4 10th, and he converted his birdie. It was the only birdie recorded in the playoff, as Singh collected his second PGA Championship, following his 1998 title. He also won the Masters in 2000.

“I wanted to win one again, one major again,” Singh said afterward.

“And it came at the right time.”

Singh, then 41, called the win his “biggest accomplishment,” in golf and it essentially came thanks to his driver and his putter. The latter was a short stick, which Singh switched to before the PGA Championship after previously using a belly putter. As for the driver, Singh ranked third in driving distance at Whistling Straits in 2004 at just over 311 yards.

Singh’s birdie on the first playoff hole was the only one he converted on Sunday of the championship. He shot 76 that day, still the highest final-round score ever recorded by a PGA Championship winner.

State Amateur makes first visit to Erin Hills

rom the very beginning, Erin Hills was destined to host major golf championships, and it certainly hasn’t disappointed. The course, located between Hartland and Hartford in southern Washington County, has only been open since 2006, but it’s made a massive splash in a short period of time. Now, Erin Hills is about to host its first Wisconsin State Amateur Championship.

Erin Hills has already hosted two United States Golf Association championships and has a date with another in a few years. The 117th U.S. Open – Wisconsin’s first crack at hosting our national championship – will be played over the links-style layout in 2017.

Before that occurs, Erin Hills will host its first Wisconsin State Golf Association event – the Wisconsin State Amateur Championship sponsored by CliftonLarsonAllen. The 72-hole tournament is scheduled for July 20-23.

Erin Hills lies on a massive, windswept piece of property, so teeing options abound for everyday players and tournament officials alike.

According to the scorecard, Erin Hills has five sets of tees, ranging from the Reds at 5,109 yards to the Blacks set at 7,812 yards. But the course can actually be stretched to more than 8,000 yards, although one can assume it won’t play that long for either the 2015 Wisconsin State Am-

ateur or the 2017 U.S. Open.

Still, the layout gives tournament organizers the flexibility to move tees up or back on all 18 holes, depending on wind or the firmness of the turf or a hundred other variables.

Also new for 2015, Erin Hills has beefed up its already exceptional practice facilities with a new putting green in the short game area near the golf range. The main putting green, adjacent to the first hole, was also completely rebuilt in the fall with subtler contours more like those on the championship course. The new practice green is also a little larger than the old one.

Erin Hills’ two previous USGA events were the 2008 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship (won by Tiffany Joh) and the 2011 U.S. Amateur (Kelly Kraft). But a couple of recent stroke play events might provide a better look at the difficulty State Amateur hopefuls will encounter among the hills, knobs and eskers on the rolling layout.

At a U.S. Open local qualifier held on May 14, 2013 – played from Erin Hills’ Blue tees at 7,217 yards – the average score was a hefty 78.88 and just one player finished under par, medalist Garrett Jones of Rewey, who shot a 1-under 71. Eighty players participated.

Erin Hills has also hosted the Erin Hills Intercollegiate the last two au-

tumns, an event hosted by Marquette University featuring some of the finest college players in the nation. In the fall of 2014, only five players among 66 competitors broke par over 54 holes. The average score was 75.68 with the course measuring 7,302 yards.

At the 2013 Erin Hills Intercollegiate, 11 of 81 competitors broke par and the average score was 75.33.

Erin Hills played 7,234 yards for that tournament.

Erin Hills, which was designed by Dr. Michael Hurdzan, Dana Fry and Ron Whitten, features fescue fairways with bentgrass tees and greens. Milwaukeean Andrew Ziegler purchased the facility in the fall of 2009 from developer Bob Lang, who completed the initial routing and opened the course in 2006.

Erin Hills is a walking-only golf facility, so this summer’s State Amateur will be different from those in the recent past where players had the option of riding a golf cart.

There will be no defending champion at the 2015 Wisconsin State Amateur, as 2014 champion Alex Gaugert of Lake Geneva turned professional soon after his victory last summer. But, like professionals around the world, Gaugert can play his way back to Erin Hills in a couple of years. Qualifying for the 117th U.S. Open begins in May of 2017.

Greg Dick elected to Hall of Fame

H

e hasn’t been a Wisconsin resident for the past 20 years, but Greg Dick of Sherman, Texas left a lasting impact on the state golf scene and was elected into the Wisconsin State Golf Association Hall of Fame. Dick becomes the WSGA’s 86th inductee into the Hall.

A native of Eau Claire, Dick grew up playing golf with his friends. By age 13, he was playing in tournaments through the Chippewa Valley Golf Association. A few years later, he won the 15-16 age division at the 1973 WSGA Junior Championship and finished runner-up overall.

The next year, playing for Eau Claire Memorial High School, Dick and his team won the WIAA Boys State Golf Championship. He led his team by earning medalist honors.

Dick played for the University of Houston on scholarship but after a year decided to transfer to Northern Illinois University where he was a Mid-American Conference Individual Champion in 1978 and an NCAA Division I All-American in 1978 and 1979.

With a state title already under his belt, Dick won the WSGA State Amateur in 1980 and the Wisconsin State Open in 1984. He is one of two in Wisconsin history to accomplish the feat of winning all three.

He is currently the co-owner and general manager of Tanglewood Resort in Pottsboro, Texas. Dick and his wife Lisa have four sons: Jeff (23), Andrew (22), and twins Adam and Alex (20).

Foundation benefits schools

B

y now, thousands of high school golfers have learned that the Wisconsin State Golf Association Foundation has their backs. The foundation, formed in 2005, has been a lifeline for many Wisconsin high school golf programs. It’s not an exaggeration to suggest that some of the schools that have received foundation funds over the years might not have golf teams right now with out that assistance.

Funds come to the WSGA Foundation through many sources, including individual donations from golfers and an annual fall golf outing. Last September, 188 golfers participated in the 2014 outing at Erin Hills in Erin and Chenequa CC in Hartland. The fifth annual event was a recordbreaker, with more than $100,000 raised.

In December, 49 Wisconsin high school golf programs were targeted for WSGA Foundation disbursements in 2015. (See below.) They will receive a total of $56,600.

Cookson to receive Joe Dey Award

F

ormer Wisconsin State Golf Association president David Cookson will be the 20th Joe Dey Award recipient and the first from Wisconsin.

Cookson, a retired doctor of internal medicine who lives in Madison, will receive the Joe Dey Award at the United States Golf Association’s annual meeting on Feb. 7 at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City.

The Joe Dey Award, presented annually since 1996, recognizes meritorious service to the game of golf as a volunteer. The award is named for the individual who served as USGA executive director from 1934 until 1969.

Dey was then the first commissioner of the PGA Tour.

Cookson has served as a rules official for nearly 90 USGA championships, including 25 U.S. Opens. He was also a USGA committee member from 1983 through 2011, serving on the USGA’s Regional Affairs, Nominating and Senior Amateur Championship committees.

Cookson has been a member of the Wisconsin State Golf Association board of directors since 1970 and was WSGA president in 1977-78.

Cookson was inducted into the WSGA Hall of Fame in 2006.

“David represents the highest ideals and spirit of our game,” said Tom O’Toole Jr., president of the USGA, in a press release. “During a very special evening at the USGA annual meeting in February, we will celebrate his lifelong love of the game of golf and his unwavering dedication to preserve its honorable traditions.”
