A NOTE Welcome to the 2016 Winter Guide! We are so incredibly excited to share this holiday season with you! We spent countless hours (and drank countless bottles of wine) curating our favorite items of the season, creating gift guides for loved ones (and yourselves!), and even crafted a few personal notes about our most cherished memories associated with the most magical time of the year. This holiday season is set to be the best yet. One of us is newly engaged and the other recently became a mother, and we can’t wait to celebrate old traditions and new additions with those we love. We’re also celebrating our friendship. It’s relatively new--hard to believe that we met only two years ago--but something that’s become such a significant and important part of our lives! This e-magazine is so much more than a gift guide; it’s a reminder of what lucky girls we are to have not just each another, but a wonderful community (yes, you!) to go through life with! So grab a cup of coffee or pour yourself a glass of wine, and stay a while! We hope you love exploring our second annual Winter Guide as much as we loved creating it. Wishing you the merriest holiday season. All our love,
Kelly & Jess

CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS
“
G rowing up, ‘jammies’ were always a Christmas tradi-
tion. My Grannie typically sewed me a new Christmas ‘nighty,’ as she called them, whenever I grew out of the last one. There were several versions she made throughout the years as I grew, but they were always red flannel with lace details and ruffles. We had a tradition of opening one gift on Christmas Eve before hanging our stockings, and it was ALWAYS pajamas! I guess you could say that ‘jammies’ will always hold a special place in my heart around the holidays!

WINTER BOOTS!

BOOTS
to keep you cozy Duck boots & Sorels are what we reach for during the coldest Chicago months to brave the rain, snow, and sleet.
10 TIPS FOR buying
HUNTER BOOTS
1.
If in between sizes, go a half size down. I typically wear a size 7.5 in shoes, but I wear a (U.S.) 7 in Hunter boots–and have the right amount of room in them, even with the Welly Socks. If I wore a 7, however, I’d probably stick with the 7. (Hunter boots only come in whole sizes, by the way.)
2.

HUNTER BOOTS
10 tips for finding your perfect Hunter boots!
Decide whether you like the “Tall” or “Short” boots. The shaft height of the “Tall” boots is 16 inches, and the shaft height of the “Short” boots is 10 inches. (Break out a measuring tape and decide! Calf circumferences are the same.) I think the tall version looks a bit better on me, but I find them to be annoying if the rain stops and I have to lug them around the city all day. The shorter boots are also a lot easier to get on and off.
3. Consider the Adjustable Back version if you have wide calves. It has the height of the Original boot, but a calf circumference that expands from 15 to 17 inches. It also comes in the matte finish.
4. Choose the glossy or matte finish. I’ve owned both, and I like the glossy
finish the best, as I feel like the glossy version doesn’t “bloom” as much as the matte version. (See below for explanation.) But it’s a personal preference, for sure.
5. Realize that your boots will likely acquire a white, powdery film at
some point. But don’t worry. It’s normal. It’s called “blooming,” and it’s high-quality rubber’s way of defending itself against the elements. To restore your boots to their original finish, you can use Hunter’s Rubber Boot Buffer Spray or–my favorite–a dab of olive oil on a paper towel. (Rub it on your boots, and it’ll leave ’em looking brand new. Just use sparingly.)
6. Consider the packable “Tour” version if you’re on-the-go often. I go
through the dilemma nearly every time I’m about to board a plane (unless we’re going somewhere tropical): Should I bring my Hunters? The answer is almost always no, as they’re really rough to lug around when it’s not raining. But on a couple of occasions, I’ve been completely miserable as a result of that thinking. (Ten days of rain in Ireland will do that do you. WHAT WAS I THINKING?!) Anyway, the “Tour” version is nearly identical to the Original boots, as they’re only a half inch shorter in the shaft and an inch wider in calf circumference–and just as durable. (Frankly, the only reason I don’t own them is because I had a gift certificate to a store that carried the Original boots.) But they roll up, and are much lighter! They also come with a little drawstring bag for packing. (Watch a video of the magic here!) They come in matte, too.
7. Consider the kids’ version–$75 compared to $148! If you wear a size 7.5 or smaller, you’re one of the lucky ladies eligible to save mucho monies by going with the kids’ boots. (So many fun colors, too!) On an adult, they’ll look like a cross between the Tall and Short versions, depending on how tall you are. (The shaft is 12 inches high, compared to the Tall’s 16 inches and the Short’s 10 inches. And the calf circumference is 14.5 inches, compared to the Tall’s–and Short’s–15 inches.) But for $75, woo-hoo! Make sure to select “Big Kids.”
8. Realize that Hunters aren’t winter boots. Like, really realize that. I’ve
been known to slip ’em on in the dead of winter for a quick walk around the block with Noodle, or to take the garbage out. But Hunter wellies are not warm, and I’ve paid the price way too many times when I forgot that little fact due to pretty Pinterest photos. They’re fall/spring boots, even if you pair them with the socks.
9. The socks do help, though. They’re not going to magically turn Hunters
into boots you can wear in 20-degree weather, but they’re something. And boy, are they adorable. Especially these! (Looking for true winter boots? Try Sorel. Warmest boots ever. And check Sorel’s website if Nordstrom is sold out. Their
inventory usually lasts a bit longer.)
10. Buy from a retailer that provides free shipping and free returns, because the above is a lot to take in. My favorite is Nordstrom!

IT’S A
FAMILY
TRADITION Kelly on becoming a new mom, embracing change around the holidays, and creating new traditions as a new family of three.
M
y family has always had two big Christmas celebrations: one the week before December 25th on Long Island, New York, where everyone is originally from; and one “the week of,” in Vermont, where my cousins have a house. While we have a slew of traditions that go back as far as I can remember, I think the most significant “tradition” we have is simply being together. There’s nothing like the sound of the jingle bell clanging against the door as group after group bursts through the door, each person kicking off snow boots, tossing overstuffed bags on the floor, and haphazardly piling presents under the tree. We travel from all over the place: New York; Belgium; Washington, D.C.; New Orleans; Virginia; Rhode Island; Illinois… but the bear hugs, the screeches of delight, the laughter--it’s the sound of family. This year, things are going to be a little different. We’re still headed to Long Island the week before Christmas, but my immediate family--Mom, Dad, Patrick, Kim, Danny, Mitch, Emma and I--aren’t going to Vermont. The reason is threefold: Patrick can’t get enough time off from the emergency room, Kim didn’t get to spend the holiday with her parents last year, and Mitch and I can’t manage that much traveling with a newborn. (Last year we drove nearly 3,000 miles to attend all the celebrations and it nearly killed us, haha.) While it was an obvious decision, I was still absolutely heartbroken when I realized that for the first time, the whole gang wouldn’t be together on Christmas morning. Like, tears were shed. How could we break such a wonderful tradition? Talk about nostalgia. Recently, though, I realized something. Traditions change, just as families change. This year, we won’t be together on the morning of the 25th. But we’re all gathering the week before Christmas at my parents’ place, and we’re recreating everything: from the low-key Christmas Eve pizza dinner, setting out of cookies (and beer) for Santa, and hanging felt stockings to our raucous game of beer pong to the gingerbread house-making contest.
We’ll watch “A Christmas Story,” and the popping of British Christmas poppers/wearing of paper crowns And you know what? I bet it’s going to be the best holiday yet. Because for the first time, Emma will be there. And now it’s time for our own little family--Mitch, Emma, Noodle and me--to create our own traditions, too. Am I nostalgic for my childhood Christmases? Of course. But I’m so excited to create new memories, too. Mom and Grammie are making us our own felt stockings, which we plan on hanging on our fireplace and opening when we return from our travels. (Going to do that with our kids every year, we’ve decided, as Christmas will be spent at their grandparents’ homes!) We’re also going to go get our tree at a nearby church in Lincoln Park immediately upon returning from our Thanksgiving trip and top the tree off with a loose leaf star that one of our students from the Bronx made us. Finally, we’re going to have a family movie night, host a holiday cocktail party with friends (and their kids!), visit Santa at Macy’s in downtown Chicago, visit the Lincoln Park Zoo to see the light show, and walk through the Gold Coast to admire the lights. Next year, we’ll probably add to our new traditions. And change some. Because we are changing, and every new year brings new additions, wonders, joys, and blessings. And one thing’s for sure: I’ve never felt more blessed for those who’ve been there all along and those who’ve just joined us. Family, I love you so much, and I can’t wait to see you. I’m totally kicking all your butts in beer pong. Even you, Grammie. xo–Kelly

ASK NEAL & MITCH: PICKING THE PERFECT “GUY” GIFT Guys are simple. Don’t overcomplicate the holidays with convoluted gifts. The key to a solid unwrapping session for your guy is to manage the experience. Mitch’s & Neal here to unveil our Glorious Guy Gift Giving Guidance Guide! Here are some ideas on where to begin: Buy him a Lodge cast-iron skillet to unwrap, and a USDA prime cut of beef, a decent bottle of red, and do this. Take him to get a pedicure. Seriously, he needs it. Then go do something manly afterwards like shoot guns at the range, go to the best burger place around to eat and drink, or sample a bunch of craft whiskies. Be sure to pick up the check. Surprise him with a long weekend - ski or hit warm weather - whatever he needs more. Or, hit the really nice/trendy restaurant that you guys have been talking about but never wanted to spend the money on. Does he REALLY want clothes? Guys have hated people giving us outfits since we were old enough to know we were unwrapping clothes, so make sure to ask yourself, “does he want this, or do I just want him to wear it?” If you DO want to get us clothes, make it memorable, and go after items we don’t own, items we won’t replace ourselves, or items where our wardrobe could use serious help. Think leather (and lined) gloves, a cashmere scarf, nice cuff links, or sunglasses. What needs to be replaced or upgraded that we won’t spend money on? He’ll love make remembering that Christmas you got him his go-to jacket, brief case, grill, pair of boots, chain saw, blazer, guitar, or new/putter/driver, or set of irons. (Hint: these are tools guys use to play golf with.) Consider the timing of your gift exchange: If gifts are exchanged in the morning, give him a new set of comfy PJs and slippers to slide into. Midday gifting session? French press with specialty coffee and Baileys. Evening exchange? A set of fancy tumblers and a bottle of his favorite whiskey would be perfect. (You can never go wrong with that, especially if you’re newly dating and something bigger would seem weird.) Guys like to set stuff up. Indulge him. I don’t know your guy, but I bet he’s mentioned a new toy he’d like to plug in. Sonos speakers, an Amazon Echo, a Google Home, a drone or a Playstation 4. Give him something to play with when the gifts are all unwrapped. (Do it right, and you might get unwrapped yourself!) He’ll love thinking of you every time he turns it on!
Moral of the story? Show him you put effort into his gift, and he’ll love it!

favorite baby picks!
Bow Dress / Blanket Scarf / Emma’s other Christmas outfits: Dress / Bow Coat / Sleeper Without a doubt, the Magic Merlin Sleepsuit is our favorite baby product. Before we started using it, Emma would sleep for about three hours in a row. Now, she sleeps between nine and 10 hours at night. It’s truly magical, and Mitch and I can’t imagine life without it! (It works similarly to swaddling. It comforts and soothes, and makes the baby feel like he or she is being hugged.) We have this Motorola Baby Monitor and LOVE it. It’s so easy to use that we didn’t even need to read the directions. You simply plug it in and it works. The handheld device is amazing, and it comes with a kickstand so we can prop it up wherever we are in the house. You can even move the camera around and talk to the baby through it! The system is also very small, so we can easily transport it on trips. We love our UppaBaby stroller and car seat! Yes, it’s a bit on the pricier side. But it’s so wellbuilt, and it’s something that we use multiple times per day. I love everything about it, from the huge storage area underneath to the simplicity of collapsing the thing. What I love most, though, is that the car seat doubles as a carrier and clicks right into the stroller, which means you can go from car to stroller to home while never moving or waking the baby.
I also love this organizer and this footmuff, and I’m hoping to get this cup holder for Christmas! (Hint, hint, Mitch.) Thank goodness for UppaBaby. The Magic Bunny (made by Jellycat) is Emma’s favorite stuffed animal. It’s SO soft, and you can buy this book to accompany it. (Also, it comes in a ton of different sizes.) The book is basically about how the bunny watches over the baby when he or she sleeps in the crib, and then falls fast asleep when the baby wakes up. It’s the sweetest! Why do all babies love Sophie? No one will ever know, but Sophie is Emma’s favorite toy. She sucks on it, chews it and laughs at it when I make it squeak. Whenever Emma starts crying, we break out Sophie, and we almost always get a smile from her as a result! (There are so many other Sophie products, too.) Emma also adores her singing elephant. You press its feet and the little guy sings and flaps his ears. Cuteness overload, especially when Emma starts laughing! And what’s Emma wearing for the holidays? This bow dress, this plaid dress, this bow coat, and this sleeper!
