Hello readers and welcome to the February/ March edition.

Christmas is now just a long-distant memory. I only wish that the weight I managed to accumulate over the festive period would disappear as rapidly as the time it took me to remove the decorations from the Christmas tree! I’m writing this message at the beginning of January and I can’t be the only one entering 2016 wanting to lose those extra pounds. Fortunately, I have my ‘miracle-worker’ in the form of local personal trainer, Alex Robinson. I’m on a strict regime for the next few weeks; Alex has a great programme for me which combines healthy eating and exercise. I’ve had great results from her programme in the past and I’m looking forward to feeling a lot healthier (and lighter) by the time you’re sat reading this little magazine! Money Matters: 2016 – A Time for Alternatives?

The last 7 years have been a difficult time for savers.

The Bank of England Base Rate has not moved from 0.5% since March 2009. Although there are persistent murmurs of an imminent rise, you could still explore the alternatives. People are realising that the purchasing power of their savings is being eroded as inflation takes a bite from the true value of their cash over time.

Improving returns may need to take more investment risk but before moving away from cash you need to assess the level of risk you are prepared to take. Consider the time over which you have to invest. Additionally, your capacity for loss is another very important factor to think about when it comes to alternative investment. Consider the impact that a reduction in your income or capital would have on your standard of living? The answers to these questions are different for every investor.

Shares History suggests that the returns from shares outstrip the return from other assets including cash, but past performance of any alternative assets does not guarantee future performance. Investment in shares is not for the faint-hearted as you need to be able to stand the ups and downs of the stock market on a daily basis. Shares can be sold realising some or complete capital loss. You can invest into funds such as a Unit Trust, OEIC or an Investment Trust which pool shares of different companies together to hopefully reduce the risk of investing directly in one company’s shares, for example.

Some of these funds could be blue chip, global or UK Equity funds; some with clearly more risk than others. Speculate to accumulate? That’s very true

of investing in shares but you need to be at a level of investment risk to suit you and advice is recommended before you decide on such strategies.

Bonds These are very popular with more cautious investors and could be considered as types of IOUs. Money is effectively lent directly to (or more diluted through investment funds) either Governments (GILTS) or companies (Corporate Bonds).

Effectively, in either case the ‘borrower’ pays interest on the money borrowed and the repayment capital at a set date in the future.

Again, these are not without risk. Some ‘borrowers’ may fail to repay or a change in Base Rates can make the loan you made look uncompetitive.

Alternatives There are many other ways to speculate such as property or commodities. You should be aware of the risks and the quest could result in significantly better returns or significant capital loss. There is no guarantee that all asset classes will combat the effect of inflation and the value of investments can rise and fall.

Pauline Latham OBE MP I would like to take this opportunity of highlighting an issue close to my heart, which is to try and encourage as many organisations as possible to have defibrillators.

The British Heart Foundation and the Department of Health have launched a £1million partnership to make Public Access Defibrillators (PADs) and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training more widely available across England. I would therefore like to encourage as many organisations as possible to apply for this funding.

Finally, the day concluded with a humorous short play performed by members from Accessible Belper.

The Alzheimer’s Roadshow bus also came for the duration of the day and those present could speak on a one-to-one basis for more detailed advice.

Nearly 30,000 people suffer a cardiac arrest out of hospital each year, with fewer than one in ten surviving. However, a bystander giving immediate CPR and defibrillation can potentially double chances of survival in some cases, but for every minute without defibrillation the chances of survival decreases by around 10%.

Cardiac arrests can happen to anyone of any age and some of you may be aware of the healthy and fit 19 year old male constituent of mine, Sam Wright, who died a few years ago due to this condition.

The British Heart Foundation is currently accepting applications for PADs and CPR training kits from charities, community groups and social enterprises.

Each award will come with the BHF’s CPR and defibrillator awareness training programme, Call Push Rescue, which will allow thousands more people to become potential lifesavers. Applicants should be able to demonstrate its accessibility, preferably on a 24/7 basis, and be prepared to commit to training with the local community and good governance for maintaining the PAD. A full criterion for applicants is available online at www.bhf.org.uk. The award will run until March 2016.

Another issue I am very keen to promote is Dementia Awareness and I was pleased to hold an event in November in the hope of highlighting this illness and the support available. The session was extremely well attended by a variety of people including some who had been diagnosed with the condition. Other representatives included carers, voluntary organisations and local representatives from doctor’s surgeries.

The morning started with an interactive session led by the Alzheimer’s Society. This was followed by the

November’s Arts Meeting

A further event I held in November was a meeting of Art organisations and representatives attended from in and around my Mid-Derbyshire constituency. I am aware of the incredible talent that exists in the area and I felt that it would be beneficial to bring this group of people together to share ideas, network and to look at ways at promoting the arts in Derbyshire more widely.

A further aim of the meeting was for these groups to have an opportunity to share ideas on possible funding for arts projects, potential venues for promoting the arts and to talk informally about the opportunities and challenges in the area.

It is hoped that, as a result of this meeting, a steering group may be established with a view of further promoting the arts in Derby and Derbyshire.

The Better Life Car Boot Capers If Chinese philosophers ever need new pearls of wisdom, I’d like to suggest one of mine: When your garage is so full of tat that you can’t fit the car in, it’s time to do a car boot.

I do have a tat filing system, of sorts, so it’s not difficult to find anything (if you can clamber over everything else). On one side, opposite the firewood pallet that we found dumped in a lay-by, is a salvaged cupboard unit, held together with an assortment of odd screws.

In there live the boxes of books relegated from our shelves, an old beer tray from a charity shop and two bin bags full of Anne’s castoffs – mainly shoes.

We’ve always loved car boots. They’re really another form of recycling – turning unwanted goods into cash (and then buying other people’s flotsam). Car boots can also be a great place to pick up old and perfectly serviceable tools. For example, my much-loved £1 wrench was the only thing that could undo the old water pump so that we could replace the gasket and shaft head.

When we parked up on site, people swarmed around our car as if we were in a zombie film (and I scare easily). Anne stepped out to force them back, but she was already doing deals before I’d lifted the last box of books from the boot.

As car boot trader novices, we were surprised at how quickly some of our best stuff went, and even more surprised at how quickly it reappeared on other stalls at twice the price. Also, I lost count of how many times a cheery conversation ended up being steered towards the phrase: ‘Any chance of a discount?’ And this was often for books going for £1 apiece.

I’m not a massive fan of haggling, although I did manage some furtive bartering for veg. After a couple of bursts of brisk trade business really tailed off, and when the same faces went past for a third time we decided to call it a day. Ironically, packing up brought all the hard-core bargain hunters out from the shadows. A new phrase became the norm: “How much for this - save you taking it home?” Frankly, I felt embarrassed for the books.

Once we’d finally closed the boot, we did a circuit together. Now, by some strange alchemy, random objects acquired unexpected allure. How had I ever got by without a ceramic foot warmer or a DVD of Yes Minister?

Anne left me to it and made a beeline for one of the plant stalls. By the time I caught up with her, she was

hunting for specimens on some invisible list I’d not been privy to. Once she’d checked what was available and asked about growing conditions, I watched, in astonishment, as she ceased swapping pleasantries to ask, “Is there any discount for buying in bulk?” She always was a fast learner.

Anything we didn’t sell on the day went to a charity shop. It turned out that the ceramic foot warmer leaked (don’t ask...), so it now sits in ignominy in the garden.

The DVD was excellent. I’ve moved it to the garage, in the empty cupboard, just in case.

Days out with Dennis Go by Bus? Why Not??

On these cold days I thought something a bit shorter might be called for, to get you out when the streets are aired and home before dark. So, we are going to Matlock. “Not very exciting” I hear you say. However, as usual, it’s not the destination that matters but the journey.

One bus time is critical so I would suggest starting with Trent Barton’s The Sixes (6.3) from King Street in Belper to Ripley at 11:03 arriving at 11:31 outside the old Hippodrome

takes you via Alfreton to Matlock, arriving at 14:46. Littles buses are usually painted mainly white. The scenery on this part of the journey, which goes via Wessington, is excellent.

Matlock can be tricky for the unwary possessing two bus stations and a bus lay-by outside the old supermarket. You want the lay-by from where Trent Barton’s The Sixes at 14:55 will take you via Wirksworth to Belper Bus Station, arriving at 15:45. Again, excellent scenery.

Tickets: As usual bus pass holders travel free. Paying passengers will find that Trent Barton’s Zig Zag ticket covers the Belper to Ripley, Ripley to Sutton-in-Ashfield, and Matlock to Belper sections. Additional tickets will be required on the TM Travel and Littles sections.

People who might be interested in the buses used are invited to try my transport ‘blog’ on http://railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk.

The next bus is Trent Barton’s The Nines (9.1) from Ripley Market Place at 11:45, going to Mansfield. Leave this bus at Sutton-in-Ashfield Bus Station at 12:38, which is usually Bay E. You could of course catch the previous buses an hour earlier to allow an hour in Sutton-in-Ashfield for lunch or a coffee.

Walk back one bay to Bay F where at 12:55 a TM Travel service called the Spira will take you to Clay Cross, arriving at 13:35.

The buses are usually green. Once you leave the urban ‘sprawl’ of Sutton-in-Ashfield, the scenery is pleasant enough.

Travel Portugal: Cruising on the Douro River

The Douro has its source in northern Spain but Portugal claims the only navigable section, stretching just over 130 km from the estuary in Porto to the Spanish border.

It might take a day or two to sail upstream but most ships plan a leisurely return journey, stopping at various mooring spots and including a number of on-shore excursions.

Either way, there is plenty of excitement: low bridges when the sundeck roof and even the captain’s cabin may have to be lowered, and locks, all five of them, including the Carrapatelo, one of the deepest in Europe. Passers-by look down in awe from the top, water thunders on the roof then at last the gate opens, a mere 12 metres wide, and the boat gently slips out into the sunlight.

Cruising the Douro is about scenery and wine with ample opportunities to taste the latter, be it the light golden ‘Vinho Verde’ and other sparkling wines or the ubiquitous Port, red or white, which is produced at no higher than 500 metres. As for the scenery, it’s simply magic as ships sail in slow motion along the ever meandering river, now spreading out like a lake, now peeping into a fjord with myriad reflections or squeezing through a narrow gorge between towering cliffs and ochre-coloured rocks. The river depth ranges from 70 metres to 40 cm and it takes all the captain’s skills to dock and navigate the shallows.

Wooded slopes frame the lower reaches, dotted with red-roofed villages and chapels but, before long, settlements thin out and vineyards take over, draping every rolling hill in luminous green or autumn colours under the watchful eye of remote wineries. Some vineyards plunge straight down to the water in neat vertical lines, others cling to horizontal terraces retained by stone walls. They say that if you put all the stones

end to end, you could build two Great Walls of China.

It’s a quiet land with few people around, except at harvest time, and little to disturb the peace but the occasional greeting of ships passing each other. Sometimes a train races along the bank, a heron lands on a tree or a vulture hovers high above the cliffs. Fish pop out of the water, leaving silvery rings on the surface, and in Barca d’Alva, martins nesting under the bridge perform a brilliant aerial dance to catch insects in the sunset.

Barca d’Alva is the last place in Portugal, looking across to the border and Terra de Vegon, the final mooring and a convenient stop for a day trip into Spain and the world heritage city of Salamanca. Others drive up to the lovely medieval village of Castelo Rodrigo, basking in the sun among olive and almond groves. Then there’s Regua downstream, just a 30 minute drive from the pilgrimage shrine of Lamego, and Pinhao with its riverside promenade lined with palms and oleander, its steep cobbled lanes, its Roman bridge and railway station glistening with blue and white tiles depicting scenes of local life.

Not so far away, the Mateus Palace sits among gardens of fragrant box and flowering trees while up in the hills, traditional inns serve Portuguese fare and local wine. Vineyards, river and hills, it’s all part of the enticing Douro landscape protected by UNESCO, and the International Nature Park shared with neighbouring Spain.

Short Story An Adjustment to the Wardrobe Morris stared at the contents of his wardrobe, and knew he had a problem.

Not only was the man from the park six inches taller than him, he was also considerably broader.

Dorothy always said he made dreadful decisions under pressure, but this time he had to get it right.

Time was ticking, and before long the Sunday morning joggers would begin to arrive at the park. With every passing second the risk of detection, not to mention hypothermia, became ever greater.

It was lucky for the young man that Morris had been the first to find him. Morris was walking the dog at his usual time, and as he’d passed the shelter by the lime trees a strange voice had hailed him hoarsely from the shadows within. Morris’s heart had nearly leapt from his chest. It was a classic fight or flight situation.

Considering neither he, nor his basset, Broadstairs, were getting any younger, flight wasn’t really an option.

To his utter relief the voice did not belong to a mugger but to a young man, who was stark naked, save for a battered Indian headdress.

“I don’t suppose you could lend me a couple of quid to catch the bus home?” the man had asked politely, yet desperately. “And possibly some clothes?”

It was an understandable request Morris reflected now, looking at the suits in his wardrobe. After all, there’s no point having the correct fare if the driver won’t let you get on the bus.

“Do you live nearby?” the man had said. “Could we nip to your house for a coat, some trousers and shoes?

I promise I’ll return them.”

It turned out that the young man had been on something called a stag night, and that his friends had abandoned him an hour earlier, taking all of his clothes.

Time to get some better friends, Morris thought.

Morris had insisted that the young man wait there.

It was too risky to have him brazenly walking through the park, and besides, Morris didn’t want a naked man

in the house disturbing Dorothy. He looked over at Dorothy snoring contentedly under the eiderdown.

The less she knew about this sorry business the better.

If he could just find some suitable clothes then it would be a secret he and Broadstairs could take to the grave.

Even in this dim light Morris could see that nothing he owned would fit. His jackets, his shoes, and even his trousers would be far too small. The man would get some funny looks on the bus squeezed into those.

His eyes strayed across the rail to Dorothy’s clothes.

Dorothy was by anyone’s standards a large lady. In fact, Morris realised, a pair of her slacks would fit quite nicely. She also had size ten feet, a source of much frustration when shoe shopping.

Morris pondered the ethics of lending the stranger his wife’s clothes. The biggest problem was how to avoid Dorothy finding out. Would the man return them promptly? He had to lend him something that Dorothy would never miss, something she rarely wore and wasn’t likely to need in the foreseeable future.

Morris’s eyes alighted on the perfect choice. Delighted by his excellent decision making, he stuffed the clothes in a carrier bag and left the house without once disturbing Dorothy.

He and poor Broadstairs, would, however, be enduring a deeply disturbed Dorothy two days later. There’s no easy way to explain to your wife why you’ve received a parcel containing her peach satin mother-of-the-bride outfit, her matching sling-backs, two pound coins and a battered Indian headdress in the post.

Kindness is Catching February is traditionally a time when love, and badly written verse, fills our thoughts. But rather than spreading love and its accompanying germs, let us spread a little kindness instead.

The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation has organised a Random Acts of Kindness Week.

This year, it runs between the 14th and the 20th of February. It encourages us to reach out to more than just our nearest and dearest.

The non-profit foundation was set up in 1995 with one simple aim: that of creating a better world by encouraging people to become involved in kind actions. They provide inspiration, point out the benefits of doing good deeds and educate people in ways to help others. Their mission is to “inspire people to practise kindness and to pass it on to others.”

A grand gesture isn’t always necessary. As Oscar Wilde pointed out, “the smallest act of kindness is worth more than the grandest intention.” There are plenty of things to try out. Here are some achievable ideas: • Hold a door open for someone. The quirky little run they do when they try to get there quicker is sure to make you smile too.

• Leave an anonymous present. Then resist that all-encompassing urge to tell everyone it was you!

• Take a slice of cake over to a friend. This gesture is particularly successful if you know they are watching The Great British Bake Off. • Write a complimentary letter. I once wrote to the makers of Marmite to express how much I love it. My declaration was promptly rewarded with a note encouraging me to continue to purchase their product.

• Send a cheery text to show your appreciation of someone’s existence. I’m sure this could easily fall into your free texts each month.

• Smile. This is such an easy technique that even a novice to the ‘spreading of kindness’ can achieve it.

The benefits of doing good deeds are far-reaching.

It reduces stress, improves well-being and gives you a sense of purpose in life. Doing good to others

can even encourage them to pass on the kindness to someone else.

Kindness is catching.

To keep it simple, just the thought of knowing you have put a little cheer in someone’s day is enough to warm the cockles of your heart. I don’t know precisely what these cockles are, but I imagine you are well-advised to keep them nice and toasty.

Nobody wants a cold cockle.

Don’t worry if you are self-centred by nature. In the words of my wise neighbour, “helping others is helping yourself.” So when it comes to kindness, it is good indeed to be selfish.

Lamb and Spinach Curry This mildly spiced curry thickened with red lentils and spinach makes a refreshing change for a winter family meal. Serve with a cooling cucumber and mint yoghurt and some warmed naan bread for a really filling mid-week supper.

Serves: 4 Ready in: 55 minutes Ingredients: 2 tbsp oil 600g lean lamb steaks, cut into chunks 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed 1 large onion, peeled and chopped 6 tbsp Balti curry paste 75g red split lentils 400g can chopped tomatoes 200g baby spinach leaves 2 tbsp chopped fresh coriander Boiled basmati rice and lemon wedges to serve Method: Heat half the oil in a large heavy-based pan over a medium-high heat. Add half the lamb pieces and fry for 3-4 minutes, turning occasionally until browned and sealed all over. Remove the lamb with a slotted spoon and set aside. Add the rest of the oil and fry the rest of the lamb pieces in the same way.

Add the onion and garlic (and a splash more oil, if needed) and fry over a medium heat, stirring occasionally for 3-4 minutes, then stir in the curry paste and fry for a further minute until fragrant. Return the meat to the pan and stir to coat in the curry paste.

until the lentils are soft and the meat is tender.

Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

Stir in the spinach and coriander. Cover and cook for a further 2-3 minutes until the spinach has just wilted. Serve with the boiled basmati rice and lemon wedges.

For a spicier flavour, replace the Balti curry paste with one that has a little more heat such as Madras. Adding some finely chopped red chilli when frying the onion will also boost the heat factor!

Stir in the chopped tomatoes, 300ml cold water and the lentils. Reduce the heat then cover and simmer for about 30 minutes, or

Beer Beers of the Month: February February: dank, gloomy, and utterly surplus to requirements. Couldn’t we abolish it and have 11 months of 33.18 days each (33.27 in leap years)? But no – we’re stuck with it. Don’t fret, though – there’s a beer for everything.

February does have one high point: St Valentine’s Day. That’s the day when we prove that we love each other by buying flowers and fizzy wine and stuff like that. But, if we really love each other, we prove it with chocolate, and indeed beer. Here are two rich, warming chocolate beers that will drive away the February shivers and help demonstrate our love.

The first contains no chocolate. But Fuller’s London Porter (5.4% alcohol) is made of pale, crystal, brown, and chocolate malts and Fuggles hops, which between them produce the overall effect of a very sophisticated dark chocolate. The colour is – well, chocolate, but with amber glints if you hold it up to the light. The nose is somewhat surprising: caramel from the crystal malt, with a slightly acidic green-fruit freshness from the Fuggles. The palate, though, is all chocolate and very rich chocolate at that, but with a balancing bitter tang. The finish has strong overtones of coffee but with more bitterness.

Meantime Chocolate Porter (6.5% alcohol), by contrast, does contain chocolate alongside its grist of roasted malts. Pitch black in colour, it has a strong aroma of dark chocolate with a deep, slightly earthy undertone. The palate is similarly complex, with very strong chocolate offset by a delightfully delicate floral note, like parma violets. The finish is more of the same, lingering, and with a more-ish bitterness.

Beers of the Month: March Funny old month, March – is it winter or spring? Let’s look charitably on March and think of it as the start of spring. Lambs gambolling shakily in the meadows. Primroses peeping shyly under the hedgerows. Bare branches budding. Hares behaving badly ... that sort of thing.

And in fact for the truly intractable beer-geek March does have a special significance: in Medieval Germany it was held to be the last month when it was cold enough to brew without risking airborne infections. Everybody brewed like billy-oh, storing their produce through the hot summer in ice hewn from glaciers. The last of the March brew was polished off in a big splurge in October, when the weather was cool enough to start brewing again. The Germans traditionally drink Märzenbier at Oktoberfest, but we can’t easily get that, so we’ll settle for two strong, lush, British classic pale ales instead.

Greene King Abbot (5% alcohol) is a pale copper colour with a deep head and a fine spritz. In bottle it’s a lot lighter in character than on draught: the nose is laden with fresh green fruit, while the palate is creamy and full-bodied but without the marmalade sweetness of the cask version and the finish is tart and bitter.

Adnams Broadside is stronger at 6.3% alcohol and much darker in colour; but the nose is still fresh and fruity and gives way to pear-drop esters – like varnish, but nice. The palate, again, is surprisingly light and still carries more than a hint of pear-drops, while the finish has a very slight lingering bitterness. It’s a gentle giant.

Humour: Nest-Building for Beginners I recently moved in with my girlfriend.

I’ve never lived with just a girl before, which I guess means I am now officially a grown-up.

This is all very exciting, and so far it’s proving to be completely lovely. We have a great little place with a garden and a breakfast bar, and we’re cultivating our own private scene of domestic bliss.

But I will say this – things change when you progress from the world of house-sharing to the world of co-habitation. We had friends round to the new place for the first time last night, and while I was giving them the official tour, one asked: “So how have things changed now you’re living with your girlfriend?” I didn’t need to say anything – I just pointed to the bottle of Lemon Blossom & White Rose luxury handwash by the sink.

Until I moved in with my girlfriend, I hadn’t been especially aware of a nascent nesting instinct in her. But it turns out said instinct was merely lying dormant, like a volcano, or a snoozing puma, because the minute we set foot through the door, the beast was unleashed.

The house began to fill up with knick-knacks and candles and posh crisps and carafes. We have glass vases full of champagne corks, and our pasta is all in jars. There are four hundred different types of oil by the hob, from truffle and ground-nut to extra virgin and garlic-infused. A few days into our tenancy I found my girlfriend in the kitchen, scrolling through an iPhone app with a wild look in her eyes.

‘Are you OK?’ I think her hands might actually have been shaking.

‘I can’t... stop... buying... tea towels.’

And this was true. We now have an army of those novelty tea towels with London place names written on them, and she is also threatening to invest in a set of matching cushions. Last weekend I found out how much cushions cost, and let’s just say that you shouldn’t spend that amount of money on a single item for your house unless it’s your ACTUAL HOUSE.

The other thing is slate coasters. We have slate coasters now. And although I worry that slate coasters will look to future generations the way orange and brown furniture looked to mine, I am rather fond of them. I like to imagine that Viking warriors – were they the sort to worry about leaving rings on their antique tables – would have used slate coasters for their flagons of beer; although of course they’d probably have made them themselves by biting chunks off cliff-edges, as opposed to buying them from Oliver Bonas like we did. But anyway, I digress. My girlfriend bought the coasters in question, and positioned them neatly on the faux-country wooden tray with the French writing on it, next to the whisky tumblers. They were wrapped up in brown string, which looked rather fetching, but when I made a move to unwrap them I was instructed that now was not the time for unwrapping the slate coasters. I was then informed that while the point at which it was okay to untie the coasters would one day be upon us, advance knowledge of this date would not be provided to me. It would just suddenly happen, much like the second coming of Christ.

The coasters have, incidentally, now been set free, so you really must come over for a cuppa sometime.

Footnotes The Importance of Good Nail Care There are many things which can make nail care difficult. The most common is when nails have become very thick and almost impossible to cut.

There are many causes of this, from fungal infections to the effects of age.

It’s hard to determine the cause without a detailed examination and, in some cases, analysing a small sample of the affected nail(s).

Usually the appearance of the nails can be dramatically improved in just one treatment, although regular maintenance is often required to keep them in order. In the case of fungal infection, there are various treatments available either over the counter or from your practitioner, depending on the severity and type of infection.

The other main problems are caused by unusually shaped nails such as ram’s horn or tube shaped nails which have to be treated very carefully to avoid damaging the surrounding tissues. I would recommend that anyone who suffers from this kind of nail seek professional help as they can be very tricky to trim safely.

Finally, we have ingrown nails which can be extremely painful and have to be cared for very carefully as they can easily become infected. In short, nail care is important and, no matter how strange you think your nails look, we can make them look and feel a whole lot better.

The Peak Rail ‘Santa’s Special’, which runs each Christmas

This is a fairly easy walk that is also relatively flat, having only 42 feet (10 metres) between the highest and lowest points of the route. The steep bits are the path up the bank to the side of the railway line (Peak Rail) from the fields near Darley Bridge and the descent back from the track to the riverside path near the end of the walk.

The outbound section follows the route of the Derwent Valley Heritage Way (DVHW), following the line of the River Derwent to Darley Bridge. The return leg passes through a farm and across fields before joining the trackside concessionary path back to Riverside Station.

From there, the route re-joins the DVHW to return to Matlock Station.

The Walk From the car park, walk back towards the town centre and cross the A6 at the pedestrian crossing near the old river bridge. Once safely across the road, take the riverside path away from the town which forms a section of the Derwent Valley Heritage Way (DVHW) long distance footpath; follow the tarmacked footpath

down between the high wall and the river until it passes beneath the bridge that carries the A6 bypass over the river. Beyond the road bridge, Riverside Station and its signal box are visible up to the left. The footpath from this point begins to become less well maintained as it approaches the railway bridge ahead. Pass under the railway bridge and cross a concrete beam over a small stream that has eroded a gulley into the path. To the left at this point are some steps – this is where the return leg of the route descends to re-join the DVHW later.

Continue along the riverside path as it rises into a wooded area. Along this piece of the route short sections of the path can become muddy and flooded in wet conditions; these are easily passed by keeping to the grass on the right side of the path. Staying on the path, follow it past the factory on the left and enjoy the views across the valley to the right until eventually arriving at a wooden step stile near a bend in the river. Beyond the stile the path divides, one route continues ahead diagonally across the field and the other (our route) continues to the right along the path of the river. Carry on along the track to a stone squeeze stile and stock gate, then cross the middle of the following field to another stock gate. Pass through the second gate with its bridge across a drainage ditch then, once again, continue along the path as it curves gently to the right. After a distance, the path arrives at a makeshift stock gate leading to a path between the hedges of gardens belonging to the houses ahead. Again, in wet conditions, this path can be affected by water – in this case a free-flowing stream down the middle of the path!

Once at the top of this ‘stream path’ go through the stone squeeze stile and out onto a lane.

the lane until it splits. Continue ahead and follow the path as it swings left then right to cross a stream, then on to a stile beside a metal farm gate. Go through the gate or cross the stile and follow the tarmac track for a little under half a mile to another metal gate and stile combination. Pass through the gate then follow the road through the outskirts of Darley Bridge to the bridge itself. At the bridge, cross the road then cross the bridge towards the Square and Compass public house.

On the far side of the bridge, cross the road once more and take the footpath on the right into Flatts Farm. At this point, there are two footpaths – one each side of a stone wall. This route takes the one nearest the bridge.

If in doubt, forget the stiles and walk into the farmyard through the driveway, then follow the wall to the left.

With the wall still on the left, continue past the barn to a metal farm gate; pass to the left of the gate, cross a farm track, then go to the left of a second gate into a field and walk ahead (keeping the wall to the left). On entering the field you may be faced with a quagmire! I got around this by walking round its right side; if you need to do this, look out for what may be an old well capped only by a few old pieces of wood.

Having negotiated the mudflat, follow the field wall (to the left) to the end of the field and go through a stone squeeze stile near a wooden power line pole. Continue through the next field and exit through a similar stile.

Now head diagonally right (about 45°) to the point

where a fence meets the curving River Derwent. Go through the wooden stock gate and take the path that follows the riverbank south-east towards Matlock.

Follow the path to another stock gate, then down to cross a wooden plank bridge over a stream and up some steps on the far side. The route then tracks the course of the river, passing under the arch of a fallen tree to a stone squeeze stile. The embankment that carries the trains of Peak Rail should now be to the left. Continue ahead, through three fields via stiles and stock gates, until the path again meets the riverbank.

On leaving the third field there is a cattle creep under the railway line to the left; to the right of the creep is a rusting metal kissing gate that provides access to a concessionary trackside footpath. Go through the gate and up the embankment to join the trackside path.

Walk along the concessionary path beside the track towards Matlock for three-quarters of a mile to the point where it crosses the River Derwent. If you time the walk right, you may well be passed by a Peak Rail steam train running between Matlock and Rowsley South stations. In my case, as I did the walk in December, it was the steam hauled ‘Santa’s Special’.

On reaching the bridge, the path crosses the river using the parapet of the railway bridge. It’s quite safe with sturdy hand rails on both sides. Climb the metal steps, cross the bridge and descend on the far side; here the concessionary path ends and drops down to the DVHW via a stepped path to the right. On reaching the bottom of the path, turn right to pass under the railway bridge and retrace your steps along the footpath for around half a mile back to the pedestrian crossing and the car park at Matlock Station.

Living Room on Wheels There is a subtle but definite shift going on in the way people use and drive their cars. Aids such as lane departure warning, self-parking, adaptive cruise control and emergency stop systems are there to make the journey safer.

But you’ll also see options in the brochures under the pseudonym of “comfort” or “leisure packs”; Bluetooth phone connectivity, in-car Wi-Fi and internet radio.

On average it takes five years for a model to go from drawing board to front drive, so by 2020 expect the family hatchback to be not simply a means of transportation but a place of relaxation too. It’s recognised that we are spending longer in our cars, so the makers are moving towards the car being as much a living as a driving space.

Driverless technology is here already, albeit just past the embryonic stage. Soon we will see accident prevention systems as standard including innovative methods to control the car (steering wheels will seem very last year).

Also we are likely to find the car thinking for itself, making

route choices and driving decisions for you based upon external data, not just from the internet but in the immediate space that surrounds it.

All sounds a bit “Joe 90”? After all, didn’t those sci-fi comics of the 1960’s have us all driving auto hover-cars, dressed in two-piece, one-colour leisure suits by now? Well, the 2015 Tokyo motor show saw concept cars with these features from Nissan and Mercedes, the latter being vigorous innovators in the motoring world.

Mercedes were first to bring you such things as brakes on all 4 wheels (yes really!), fuel injection, traction control and airbags. Still, they have yet to introduce a range of one-colour, two-piece leisure suits.

Gardening: Feathered Friends Watching wild birds in your garden is a real delight and, as many help to keep pests at bay for much of the year, it makes sense to encourage them in. You can provide a haven for wild birds as long as you have a fair number of potential hiding places, such as a few good sized shrubs or trees – and trees which provide berries or other fruits are always going to be welcome.

But, what else can you do to encourage your feathered friends into the garden? A source of water really is one of the best features, so either buy an ornamental birdbath or create one from a shallow dish with sloping sides. The water should be no deeper than 2” (5 cm) and if you do have a deeper container then you should fill the lower depths of it with good sized stones, to reduce the depth. Ideally the water should be changed every other day, but at this time of year it is essential to make sure that the water does not freeze for long periods of time. Other garden water features, including ponds with shallow sloping sides, are also perfect for many birds to feed and bathe in.

Providing birds with additional food materials is worthwhile, but remember to provide a constant supply or they may come to rely on something that is not there when they need it most.

If you have a problem with squirrels, then use a squirrel-proof feeder – they resemble bird cages and hold a central cylinder of peanuts, although they can cost up to £40. If squirrels are not a problem use a cheaper nut feeder, but position it so it is out of range of cats.

Save household scraps for the birds too; they enjoy apples, cooked rice, cheese, old breakfast cereal, raisins and sultanas and, of course, bread.

Buy fat balls which contain mixed seeds and hang them from trees or large shrubs where they will provide a fantastic meal for many birds and, provided you position them correctly, means that you can also enjoy watching them. I only buy the net-free fat balls, as birds’ feet can get trapped in the net.

You can also buy grubs and larvae to feed the birds. These high protein snacks are particularly useful once birds start feeding their young in the spring, and are best distributed on a bird table or even on a garage roof. They are available by mail order or from garden centres and pet shops.

If you feel like making or buying a bird table on which to set out the feasts you are supplying, then so much the better. Choose one which is not easily accessible by cats, and position it where you can watch the birds as they feed and drink. I mainly feed the birds on top of an old, established hedge. It is just tall enough for me to reach its flat clipped top surface and I put out bird food on flat wooden trays – perfect for me to view and impossible for cats to get the wrong idea about who is meant to be eating!

The Diary of a Local Mum Back to the Future Well, after the madness that is Christmas we’ve finally managed to find homes in cupboards and boxes for all the new toys that have been strewn about the house for the last few weeks. In the process of tidying, sorting, and putting away, it struck me how different most of them are to the toys I grew up with – and yet how many of the old classics have survived the passage of time.

In October 2015 we saw ‘Back to the Future Day’ – the day when, in the 1989 film ‘Back to the Future II’, Marty McFly supposedly arrived in the ‘future’ to see everyone travelling around in flying cars and on hoverboards with self-tying shoes. So maybe these predictions haven’t quite materialised, but I wonder what Marty would have made of smart phones, tablets, e-readers and games consoles allowing you to play with people around the world...?

Back when I was a little ‘un (and I didn’t think it was all that long ago until I started this conversation with my kids...) the idea of an iPad or an Xbox really would have seemed like something from a sci-fi film. I tried to explain about the computer games we used to play – you’d put in a cassette (‘What’s a cassette?’), then leave it for about 10-15 minutes to load up (‘What?!? How long?!?’). But once it loaded, it was brilliant fun! (‘Why, what did it do?’ ‘Erm, well...’). Ok, so maybe it wasn’t all that exciting by today’s standards.

There then followed a long conversation about what else was different in ‘the olden days’ (I kid you not, they seem to think I’ve escaped from a museum). There was talk of payphones, 4 channels on the TV (with programmes that you had to watch when they were on the first time, otherwise you missed them), no internet (even I can’t imagine how we survived without that!), no mobiles... the list goes on. However, we then talked about all the things that were around in ‘the olden days’ and I began to feel like less of a dinosaur.

It’s refreshing to see that, although technology and gadgetry has moved on further than we could ever have imagined, children still love many of the toys that kept us entertained. Star Wars is a prime example. First released in 1977, Star Wars is an even bigger phenomenon today than it was then. My brother was lucky enough to receive a Millenium Falcon one Christmas, which is now on loan to my son and brings just as much joy almost 40 years later. Transformers also enjoyed a recent comeback, and once again my dad was able to find a box of my brother’s old ‘robots in disguise’ in the loft – which, I have to say, are even better than the new versions!

Many of the old board games transcend decades too. There are the slightly more modern classics like Hungry Hippo, Guess Who, and Connect 4, which my kids love, or going back even further, games like Monopoly and Frustration (or Trouble) can provide much family fun. Not only do these games unite the generations but they remove the risk of Grandpa taking out the living room light fitting with an overhead serve playing tennis on the Wii (yes, it happened).

Authors that I remember so fondly from my childhood have also stood the test of time.

You’ll rarely find a child who isn’t spellbound by Roald Dahl’s incredible imagination, and although occasionally some explanation of dated references is required, Enid Blyton’s classic tales still capture young minds.

So, in this digital, global age of instant everything and charger plugs constantly flashing in every household, I take comfort in the fact that children’s minds and imaginations haven’t changed so much that they can’t still appreciate some of the ‘old fashioned’ entertainment that I remember so fondly. When the batteries go flat, get those board games out!

Holly’s Column Mr Potato Head Love him or hate him, Mr Potato Head, the iconic fibreglass figure previously inhabiting Belper Cottage garden, is here to stay!

I spoke to Mr PH’s right-hand man, Adrian Farmer, to learn more about his history.

It all started in 1994 when Belper was twinned with Pawtucket, cementing the historic links between them.

Samuel Slater was apprenticed to Jedediah Strutt, learnt how to spin cotton, then left for America, settling in Pawtucket where he built America’s first factory in 1973. They regard him as the Father of the American Industrial Revolution, but in Belper he was “Slater the Traitor” for stealing the ideas developed here in the Derwent Valley.

Mr Potato Head waddled here in 2000 at great expense in a shipping container sent by The Blackstone Valley Tourism Council, based in Pawtucket. He was then picked up from the docks by a lorry supplied by Belper-based Nelson Distribution.

Adrian expresses that in return we didn’t surprise Pawtucket with anything on that scale, but that we do always give them a warm welcome when visitors come over to the UK. We’ve made some very good links, and formed lasting friendships between the two communities. He’s had lots of homes, but never a permanent one.

However the moves aren’t always planned...

Adrian told the story: “While I was editor of the Belper News, we received a photograph of a ‘spud-napping’, complete with note. Overnight, some students had broken open the chains holding Mr Potato Head in place outside Safeway (now Morrisons) and moved him onto the roundabout near McDonalds. They then wrapped him in tin foil, photographed him (no digital, it was an instant polaroid) then put him back where they found him, as if he’d never been away. The message, from the ‘Potato Liberation Front’, said that next time they would bake him! Thankfully, there never was a next time. It was quite a stunt at the time – of course you couldn’t fake polaroid photographs, so we knew it was proof that it had happened, even if the photograph and note arrived overnight to be opened on April 1st!”

I asked Adrian what he thought of the ‘marmite’ controversy of Mr Potato Head, as he seems to attract trouble, to which his reply was “He’s a big presence in the town – I wouldn’t say I love him exactly, but I certainly don’t hate him. Life’s never dull when he’s about!”

All Things Local has joined forces with Beverley Kennedy (pictured) from Floraline, Gregory’s Way in Belper, to offer readers the chance to show their appreciation for a fellow member of the community.

The recipient of this issue’s bouquet is Barbara Blount, from Belper. Barbara was nominated by Janette Laughton. Here’s what Jan wrote: “I would like to nominate someone very special; her name is Barbara Blount. The family are quite well known in Belper and surrounding districts. They have had far more than their share of tragedies, but the one that hurt them most was the loss of their daughter Penny three years ago in December. She had two rare and complicated conditions called Systemic Scleroderma and Pulmonary Fibrosis. The very expensive drugs she needed, costing £26,000 per year, had to be funded by the family. So, this was the beginning of Penny’s Fund and The Belper Games. Penny was able to get to the launch with help from family and friends but sadly passed away in December 2012. Barbara wanted Penny’s name to be remembered for her love of life and, as Penny wished, The Belper Games continues as an annual event in her memory to help fund research. The event has been running for 4 years and is going from strength-to-strength, raising money for the Pulmonary Fibrosis Trust, Scleroderma Society and Ataxia UK (supporting another local lady, Kerry Bull). The 2015 Games raised £22,000 and a donation was also made to The Drop Inn, Belper. This would not have happened if it wasn’t for Barbara’s caring and positive attitude. She is a

devoted wife to Brian and cares for him 24/7 (a massive task on its own) but she still makes time for her 5 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

The family are all involved, but Barbara is like the mother elephant, pulling everything together. She doesn’t think she’s doing anything different to any other wife, mum or grandparent but she is. Upbeat As the nights get lighter we sometimes see an increase in reports of anti-social behaviour.

Preventing and reducing anti-social behaviour is a priority for your local Safer Neighbourhood policing team. We work closely with other agencies to help create a safer community for all.

Anti-social behaviour refers to anything from low-level persistent nuisance to serious public disturbance. It causes nuisance and annoyance; harassment, alarm or distress; significant and persistent problems in neighbourhoods and leaves communities feeling intimidated and afraid.

Examples include: noise nuisance, damage, vandalism, graffiti, intimidation/harassment, litter, dog fouling, fly tipping, drug or alcohol misuse or nuisance motorcycles, but this is not an exhaustive list. The key issue is the impact these actions have on victims, witnesses and the community.

What is not anti-social behaviour?

Sometimes matters that you find annoying may not be classed as anti-social behaviour. For example, if young people are hanging out on the street but not doing anything wrong then that is not classed as anti-social behaviour. If they are playing football or riding bikes then that is also not against the law.

Maybe a neighbour has an annual barbecue to celebrate their birthday, causing smoke and noise – this would be classed as a one-off, unless it was happening regularly.

What should I do if there is a problem?

If the problem is not too serious, sometimes talking to the person involved can be enough to stop the issue. They simply might not realise that what they are doing is disturbing you and, once they know, may be willing to change their behaviour.

If it does continue, or if the problem is so serious that you don’t want to confront them, you should report it to the appropriate agency for help.

You can report anti-social behaviour to your local housing provider, council or police. The Safer Derbyshire website, www.saferderbyshire.gov.uk, has a tool that can direct you to the right service.

Local History: Belper Mill Workers

In 1897, all the workers and overseers at Strutt’s Belper Mills were photographed, each one being identified by surname and initial on the group photograph on which they appeared.

They were photographed by Corliss of Long Eaton but it is not clear why this was done. It is known that the Strutt family were interested in photography, and having a paternalistic attitude towards the workforce, they may have wished to have a visual record of the workers before the setting up of English Sewing Cotton Limited in 1898. This merger of a group of cotton mills, including Strutt’s, was brought about by the reduction of the industry in England in the face of foreign competition.

These photographs in a folder with index are available at the North Mill, having been useful to local people enquiring into the histories of their families as well as to those interested in the working of the mills. Some of the volunteers at the North Mill have formed a research group, and for their first project they have decided to study some of those workers identified as living at the time in the Strutt houses in Short and Long Rows and the Clusters. They hope to examine the family histories of selected workers, probably ten in number, both before and after 1897, and look forward to linking up with any descendants who may have information relative to their project.

Belper Genealogy Group will also be involved in the research.

There will be an exhibition of photographs and other material at the end of March, but this project is likely to continue for much longer. All information discovered will be placed in a database for future reference, so if you have knowledge or an interest in any of the workforce pictured who lived in the Rows or The Clusters in around 1897, the research group will be pleased to hear from you. They are particularly interested in the job title

Belper Historical Society has a programme of talks at St. John’s Heritage Centre on the first Wednesday of the month from 7.30 pm. On February 3rd 2016, Barry Lings will look “Along the Portway” and ask if this is Derbyshire’s oldest road. March 2nd’s meeting will hear Ian Morgan tell a true and tragic story of mill life, murder and transportation in Derbyshire in a talk entitled “Within Sight of the Gibbet”. On April 6th, Geoff Sims will lead us on a virtual walk through the industrial history of Sawmills and Bullbridge. All are welcome, and the charge to visitors is £3. Light refreshments are served at the end of the meeting. The Heritage Centre is open on the last Saturday of the month from 9.30 am to 12.00 noon, and members are on hand to help with queries. The Roll of Honour for Belper’s servicemen who were killed in World War I will then be turned to the next page.
