Jersey’s Climate Emergency: How Did We Get Here?

Jonathan Renouf / Co-hosted by Action for Wildlife, National Trust for Jersey

Friday 1 October

7pm The States of Jersey has declared a climate emergency, and plans are underway to make Jersey carbon neutral by 2030 – twenty years earlier than the UK. It will mean huge changes, involve a lot of money, and touch on almost every aspect of Island life. But how did we get here?

Over the last 20 years, Jonathan has had a ring side seat on the climate change debate. As a TV producer in the BBC Science Unit, he was involved in almost every major BBC documentary about climate change, including 2019’s Climate Change: The Facts. He’s met leading climate change sceptics, visited scientists studying climate change all over the world, and filmed climate change in action. In this talk, illustrated with clips from many different television programmes, he explains why climate change is such a difficult subject to film, identifies the key turning points in our understanding of the changing climate, and discusses how best to tackle climate change scepticism.

Jonathan Renouf is an award winning television producer who spent 20 years working for BBC television’s Science Unit. He was Executive Producer of series such as Wonders of the Universe, The Sky at Night and How Earth Made Us. His climate change credits include: Earth: The Climate Wars, Meltdown: A Global Warming Journey (BAFTA nomination), Climate Change by Numbers and Climate Change: The Facts. He now lives in Jersey.

All Hale, Great Judge

Jersey Gilbert & Sullivan Society

Herself a Gilbert and Sullivan fan and performer from her student days, she helps the Society celebrate its 40th Anniversary by reflecting on her life in the law and the position of women in society, interspersed with extracts from the Savoy Operas on these themes.

Lady Hale’s recollections are followed by a production of Trial by Jury which illustrates splendidly how well Sullivan’s good-humoured music complements Gilbert’s witty satire of the law and society, much of which is still highly relevant today.

Boy’s Khaya

Tavaziva Dance

Thursday 21 October

8pm Powerfully moving and personal, Boy’s Khaya is the latest work and account of Bawren Tavaziva’s early life in Zimbabwe told through a mesmerising combination of contemporary, ballet and African dance, with a spoken-word soundtrack and music. In this moving and powerful new work, the discoveries of renowned contemporary African choreographer and music producer, Bawren Tavaziva, are a universal comment on Africa and who we are today.

Boy’s Khaya, meaning ‘servants house’, is a colonial legacy still very apparent today in Zimbabwe. It draws evocative memories for Bawren who grew up in one and speaks powerfully, through dance, about the fragility of human beings, evoking powerful emotions about Bawren’s early life and the human experience. Political persecution, slavery and modern colonialism create a rich source of untold truths. Boy’s Khaya is an immersive and unforgettable audience experience.

The soundscape and music also composed by Bawren, cleverly brings together the choreography, lighting and stage design and is performed by a cast of five dancers. “Boy’s Khaya gives a beautiful, powerful comment drawing on his own personal experience of racism and apartheid in Zimbabwe.” Carole Woddis, theatre journalist and critic (The Arts Desk, Reviews Gate, My Theatre Mates, London Grip, woddisreviews.org.uk) Please note: Boy’s Khaya includes a series of flashing lights and depictions of race-related violence. £18 (£12 students) Members: £15.30 (£10.20 students)

7pm You are invited to the World Premiere of movie short Hiding Place. This is to be followed by a screening of the 2019 film Booksmart.

£5 (£3 students) Members: £4.25 (£2.55 students)

Hiding Place

Of all the places to encounter a stranger, under a table at a wedding isn’t necessarily the first one that comes to mind. Hiding Place is a short film which takes place almost exclusively in this bizarre location where wedding guests Stevie (Rebecca Eve) and Jake (Joss J. MacDonald) are flung together. Written and filmed at a time where even being at a wedding, let alone being in close proximity with someone under a table, was completely inconceivable, Hiding Place is a wistful celebration of these chance encounters. In a moment where we’ve all forgotten and then had to quickly re-learn how to be around strangers, this short film takes a longer look at that exchange and how, in risking it all, you could just find something amazing. Originally commissioned by the Jersey Arts Centre as part of new writing initiative ‘Scenes from a…’ in January 2021.

Directed by Lucy Rose Abraham / Written by Martha MacDonald Director of Photography & Editor: Lucy Le Lievre Composer: Christina Orchard / Sound Designer: Samuel Hills With special thanks to: Constable Simon Crowcroft and the Parish of St. Helier team and Todd MacDonald
