Bright Young Things

Hightlands College / School of Art

Until Saturday 18 September

Bright Young Things is a showcase of some of the best artwork produced by this year’s UAL students. Despite the challenges presented by a very difficult year, all of the students have responded well and produced work to a very high standard. On display is work from some of the L3 year 1, L3 year 2 and Foundation Diploma students.

During their final major project, all students have been encouraged to explore a theme of their choice. Environmental, mental health, feminism, economics and even laundry have formed the starting points for the work on display. The students have responded to the themes by exploring diverse materials and techniques to communicate their ideas.

This year’s summer show at the School of Art proved to be one of the most successful yet for the department. We had many visitors to the show who gave glowing feedback on the work displayed. Unfortunately, not all of the work is on display here, but it is hoped that anyone viewing the show gains a greater understanding of the work produced by the School of Art and the hard work and variety of disciplines and concepts the students are able to interrogate.

The Bright Young Things will now be moving on to the next step of their artistic career. Be it studying womenswear at the Royal College Fashion, Illustration at AUB or coming on to the next level of study at Highlands College.

FAMILY

Monday 8 November - Saturday 20 November

In conjunction with this year’s Human Rights Festival: Black Lives Matter, we are presenting a collection of photography celebrating diversity within families. This exhibition is an assembly of faces and stories from families across the Island, sharing their narrative on being a bridge between nationalities. An interactive exhibition that invites the viewers to share their own experiences within their mixed heritage. Our thanks to Debi Morris-Monro and Wayne Stewart for the curation of this exhibition.

Motherhood

May Bourne + Sophie Darwin

Monday 22 November - Saturday 11 December

This unapologetic, raw and realistic photography campaign celebrates the beauty of the post-partum body.

The campaign, created by Midwife May Bourne (Positive Birth Jersey) and photographer Sophie Darwin, includes 25 mothers and their babies.

At the heart of the campaign is that all bodies are beautiful – after all, they have just performed a miracle.
