The North Kenwood-Oakland community areas have seen a lot of change over the past seven decades. This study examines the area from 35th street to the north, to 47th street to the south, between Cottage Grove Avenue and the lakefront. The neighborhoods are examined in terms of population characteristics, housing, transportation, economic situation, education opportunities, the built environment, and the institutions influencing the neighborhoods.
This study mainly takes a look at official U.S. Census Bureau data in attempt to quantify the changes over the past seven decades. Other historical sources have been looked at as well for more concrete evidence of the physical and policy changes over the years, but this study merely presents a sampling of the rich history of the North Kenwood-Oakland communities.
