60 years of camping

2

Come 2017, it will be 60 years since Søren Odgaard turned his passion for camping into his profession. It all started with the production of a villa tent called Capri. Prior to that, he had been renting out tents, giving him every opportunity to see what their weak points could be. So his début tent, Capri, came with a great deal of experience already built into it. And that is how it has been ever since. At Isabella, we believe that it is our force of will to constantly develop and build new features and improvements into the awnings that has made Isabella a unique – yet ever youthful – product. It is only by doing this that we can ensure that Isabella awning owners throughout Europe can enjoy hassle-free holidays and thus experience the feeling of freedom. For us here at Isabella, camping is all about the feeling of freedom. It is our vision to inspire and set the scene for the feeling of freedom… The freedom to be yourself, to relax, to live life to the full, to be together… The way Isabella sees it, freedom is not something that happens by chance... It comes with quality and the peace of mind of knowing that things are made to last. It comes with good design and the joy of spending time in a beautiful setting. It comes with carefully thought out features and the joy of everything working as it should. At Isabella, we have both the curiosity needed and the will to do things differently. And we wish to help shape developments over the next 60 years, too. As market leader, we will always be one step ahead, hence our promise to all Isabella campers: Feel free. We wish you and your family a wonderful camping season. Morten Kjeldsen CEO, Isabella

Isabella – Danish design since 1957 Danish design has had a place on the world map s ince the 1940s and has been exhibited at a long list of museums as an example of the best in terms of both innovation and craftsmanship. Names such as Kaare Klint, Hans Jørgen Wegner and Børge Mogensen attracted great a ttention t hroughout the world– and still do to this day. But D anish furniture design was not the only thing to make an impression. Anything that could be designed for improved function and user experience became a part of what is now known as Danish Design. A Danish washing up bowl is even on display at the Museum of Modern Art in New York! The Golden Age of Danish Design The 1950s and 60s are known as the Golden Age of Danish Design and this was when, in 1957, Søren Odgaard started production of Isabella awnings, and he was influenced by – and himself became in his field – part of the DNA upon which Danish design is founded. At the time, it was part of the mindset of furniture designers that everyone should have the opportunity to buy quality at a price they could afford. Craftsmanship and attention to detail were also very much in focus. The Danish tradition of craftsmanship, which involves refining both the idea and the design, has always helped elevate the quality of Danish design. The offshoot is a desire to create something that functions in everyday life and can withstand use. Welfare and camping Camping was new in the 1950s. The number of cars per capita across Europe alone was so low that few were in a position to go camping, but, as luck would have it for Søren Odgaard and Isabella, the number of cars – and campers – increased explosively in the years that followed. Welfare development and growing industrialisation also meant more days off and a shorter working week. This left time for camping and freedom... and just as people would furnish their homes with good, functional design, so, too, would they surround themselves with things on the campsite that could withstand use and offered a host of practical details. And this is where Isabella will still have the status of a design icon in 2017 and beyond, because Isabella is based on the same DNA as many other Danish companies, i.e. the desire to innovate in line with changing consumer demand and desires ... if not a little before.

Caravanity – another side of camping Most people associate camping with travel and e xperiences, while for others, it also is a profession and a passion that can lead to other things in life. Femke Creemers from the Netherlands uses her great creativity and love of camping to refurbish old caravans and write books.

What is your relationship with camping? I have camped all my life and I love it. First, in a De Waard tent and later in a small C hateau caravan. When I met my husband, who fortunately loved and still loves camping, we travelled to Australia and New Zealand. We did it in rather a fun way, driving around in a swanky camper van with a small tent! It meant we were outside all the time and that was one of the best things about the journey. When the children came along, we switched to an old, six-metre-long Eriba. It was quite a different story, and we couldn't help but notice how ugly it was. After giving it a makeover, which took us several weeks, not only did we have a nice caravan, but "Caravanity", which we run today, was born.

things than at home, that's when quality time arises. And I have many other reasons why it has to be camping. With other types of holiday, you don't have the same freedom to travel right where you want to go and to be there for as long as you want. It's the best. The weather comes with you wherever you go, and I love all kinds of weather.

Why camping? Camping is freedom and outdoor life. When you switch off, as you do when you're camping, and you're surrounded by fewer

What is “Caravanity”? My husband and I are both really creative, and we came up with the word "caravanity" one evening after many hours of brainstor-

Where do you get your ideas from? Pinterest is really good and I draw a lot of inspiration from there. Caravanity's large fan base is also incredibly good at coming up with ideas, so when I mix it all together with my own ideas, you can see the results in our refurbished caravans, books, tips on the website, etc.

ming. It is a combination of "caravan" and "vanity" – and that is precisely what we do. We camp and make things look nice. But "Caravanity" is also about doing things your own way and not necessarily the way the camping industry thinks it should be done. Our caravans have personality and no two are alike. This makes things unique and bear their own soul. Some have stripes, others have lots of flowers. We don't throw any old things out either. Just because something is old, it doesn't mean it is useless. Visit Femke Creemer's fascinating camping universe here: www.caravanity.nl

A caravan is undressed without one! At Isabella, we have been known to suggest that a caravan is an annex to an Isabella awning! Most new campers soon discover that life as a camper is lived in the awning. This is where you are closest to nature and experience the feeling of freedom you get when you're on holiday. We set ourselves tasks every day: How do we prevent draughts in the awning? How do we ensure that rain stays outside? How do we ensure shade and a pleasant climate with v entilation when the sun's baking down? We think about every detail – visible and invisible. It is our goal that the sum of all the details we build into an Isabella awning will ensure our customers some great holidays. We think about craftsmanship, details, quality, new ways of doing things, while holding on to all the experience we have, and all the response we receive from Isabella campers across Europe. And we take it as recognition when the new solutions we come up with become standard in many other awnings in the years that follow.

"Camping Women" is mobile art

12

What kind of person comes up with the idea of decorating and transforming five caravans into mobile art, which moreover focuses on five exciting types of women? Marit Benthe Norheim, a Norwegian artist living in Denmark, that's who! "I have camped from a very young age. First in a very small, old tent, and I remember how jealous my family and I were of all the people who could afford a caravan with all the mod cons. When I had children, we bought an old caravan. It was pure luxury and we enjoyed so many wonderful experiences with it. When it got too old, I couldn't bear to throw it out, and one day I looked at it and it struck me that it looked like a woman," says Marit Benthe Norheim. And women just happen to be the theme of most of the Norwegian artist's inspiring art. "We've enjoyed so many experiences in the caravan, in that we have gone away as a family. And the fact that we all come from a woman, and that she is often the one who brings the family together, means that there are some interesting similarities between a caravan and a woman," Marit Benthe explains. The different types of camping women arise from the shape and design of the caravan. Marit Benthe simply looks at the shape of the caravan, and then comes up with the idea for a type of woman, which she then illustrates with her imaginative and extremely e ye-c atching figures. “As a woman, I see life as something filled with dreams, experiences and adventures, and the same can be said of camping. As I often use women in my art, the two themes fell together quite naturally.” The five camping women have also travelled around a bit – in Iceland, the Faeroe Islands, Norway and Denmark – and we certainly get some looks when we come rolling through the countryside.

The Bride (Bruden) The bride has immense erotic charisma, but all the wedding photos inside the caravan show the differences in the perception of marriage, and, in several places, point indirectly to the often difficult conditions a bride will come to live under. The Siren (Sirenen) The Siren is a c ontemporary sculptural interpretation of the seductive siren of Greek mythology, who lures sailors to shipwreck on the rocks. This is how seduction often works today. Mary the Protector (Marie Beskytteren) In Mary the Protector, we encounter a modern depiction of the theme of compassion, which is often weakened at a time when individualism has such a central place. Campingmama Campingmama is big and caring, but also symbolises the narrow-mindedness, the almost suffocating atmosphere that the petty-bourgeois life can hold. The Refugee (Flygtningen): The Refugee is both a proud and vulnerable female figure, facing an uncertain future. Inside the caravan, 400 Norwegian children and refugee women have papered the walls with mosaics depicting the hardship and hope of refugees.

Photo: Inge Tranter, Gudfinna Magnusdóttir Niels Fabæk

“And that's what I want. I want people to see and experience my art, and it should be fairly obvious what I am trying to say, so you don't have to be an art buff to see the theme and the message. Most people can draw their own c onclusions just like that when they see a caravan and a woman,” says Marit Benthe.

The five camping women Else Marie Bukdahl, former rector of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Visual Arts, describes the five camping women as follows: The Camping Women, whom we encounter as individual personalities, are c haracterised by contrasts, mystery-filled aspects and enigmatic moods. That's women for you. But they are also symbolic, representing prominent types of women from history and from our own time.

Marit Benthe Norheim's next art project can be seen in connection with the naming of Aarhus as European Capital of Culture in 2017, when boats will be transformed into women. See also www.campingkvinder.aau.dk

Attention to detail is a focus on quality The famous German architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe stressed the value of attention to detail most poetically: "God is in the details". Without attention to detail, the quality will never be the best it can be. And that is why Isabella pays such attention to detail. Of course an awning can look good from a distance, but Isabella wants it to look good up close, too. Function and ease of use Smart, carefully considered details ensure simple function and ease of use. The same carefully considered details also ensure durability. An awning is an investment that must hold its value. Both its utility value – holiday after holiday – and its sales value in the event that the Isabella awning is sold on to happy, new owners.

A Exclusive Typhoon™ storm sash. B DropStop™ rain grommets are fitted to all rivets in the roof. C F ixOn™ screwless brackets designed for better tensioning, with easy positioning. S upplied with all Isabella awnings. D Heavy-duty hard-wearing reinforcements. All D-rings are sewn with PVC reinforcements. E Door ties with press studs for all Isabella awnings. F Isabella curtain system for material that hangs perfectly, with the pattern inside or out w hichever you prefer, and allowing curtains to be easily taken down and put up. G To complete your window dressing, all of Isabella’s curtains come with tiebacks in the same fabric as the curtains. Tiebacks are easily fitted with a snap fastener on the sewn-in tape in your awning. H IsaFlex™ pegging elastics with great elasticity and strength are supplied with the Isabella range. I T he double wing, with separate beading and seam detail, ensures a great fit on all caravan shapes. J T he double-folded seams in the roof g uarantee a 100% straight & waterproof seam for a better shape roof. The curve of the roof is designed to ensure the best possible fit and better tensioning of the awning. K Storm Securing PVC triangles are firmly sewn under windows for optimum position of IsaLink™.

L S ubstantial four way zips, always run smoothly. Hard wearing and always covered to protect from sun and rain. M Internal mud flap allow the pegging elastics to perform correctly and prevents drafts in the awning. Laying carpet over the mud flap makes an effective draft excluder. N All Isabella awnings have ventilation panels; some are fitted with extra panels and/or mosquito net(s) in the side, these reduce condensation and create the best indoor climate. O Regulator tabs in the corners and spiked shoes on the poles ensure uniform tensioning and reduce wear and tear “locking” the canvas and frame together. P E xclusive storage and transport bags for awnings, along with frame bags and peg bags, are available. Q T he frames of Isabella’s awnings are pre- assembled for easy assembly. The CarbonX fibreglass frame comes with IsaFix locking mechanism, and the Zinox steel frame with T-Rex locking mechanism. The locking mechanisms make putting up the awning easy and problem-free.

Camping and barbecuing go hand in hand

ROAST PORK WITH LIME AND SPICES A tasty addition to the Christmas dinner table – roast pork with a twist Serves: 4 Ingredients ·  1–1.5 kg scored pork loin ·  1–2 tbsp coarse salt ·  2 limes, untreated ·  2 sprigs of rosemary ·  1 sprig of thyme ·  12 peeled shallots ·  5 whole cardamom pods ·  4 whole cloves ·  ¾ l water or stock ·  Pepper for gravy In the kitchen Finely zest the lime and mix half of it with salt, 16

coarsely chopped thyme and rosemary. Rub the mixture into the rind and down into the cuts. Place the roast in a roasting rack and then into a dish or foil tray. Add water/stock, shallots, cloves and cardamom to the foil tray. Out at the barbecue Prepare the grill for indirect, medium heat. Place the roasting rack and foil tray on the grill, and grill for about 1 hour, adding more liquid along the way if it evaporates. Remove the shallots after 45 mins. and put to one side. Increase the grill temperature to 200°C and grill the roast for a further 20 mins. until the crackling is crisp. Remove the foil tray from the grill, keeping the juices and the onion for the gravy. Rest the roast for 15 mins. before slicing, and sprinkle with the remaining lime zest to serve.

Grilling method: Indirect Grill temperature: 175°/200°C Core temperature: 65°C Equipment: Roasting rack foil tray/dish Cooking time: 100 mins. Preparation time: 30 mins. Level of difficulty: Average Tip Use the juices to make the gravy. Sieve the juices into a saucepan, add extra vegetable stock and 200 ml cream. Bring to the boil. Place the grilled onions in the gravy and season with pepper. If you are barbecuing on a charcoal grill, you can increase the grill temperature by adding ready-prepared briquettes. If the grill becomes too hot, simply remove a few briquettes.

GRILLED STREAKY PORK A crisp, classic dish, a lighter version of which can now be enjoyed thanks to the 2-in-1 streaky pork rack.

Replace the 2-in-1 streaky pork rack on the grill. Grill the pork until crisp – approx. 35 mins. Sprinkle with salt and pepper.

Serves: 4 Ingredients ·  16 slices streaky pork · Salt · Pepper In the kitchen Salt the pork rashers on both sides and place them upright in the grooves of the rack. Place the rack on its tray. Out at the barbecue Prepare the grill for direct, high heat.

Grilling method: Direct Grill temperature: 220°C Equipment: 2-in-1 Streaky pork rack Cooking time: 20 mins. Preparation time: 15 mins. Level of difficulty: Easy Tip The tray that comes with the 2-in-1 streaky pork rack can also be used for making omelettes, tarts or cakes on the grill.

Grill tips ·  Gas grills are great! They are simple to operate, heat up quickly and are easy to transport. ·  Supplement your little gas grill with a conversion kit so that it can be hooked up to 5 kg and 10 kg gas cylinders ·  Take advantage of the fact that you can make breakfast, lunch and dinner on the grill – yes, you can even bake on it! ·  Vary what you grill – there are a whole host of accessories for your gas grill, such as a rotisserie or a 2-in-1 streaky pork rack ·  You can easily cook a whole roast on the gas grill – either on the rotisserie or in a roasting rack ·  Grill seasonal, fresh vegetables directly on the grid ·  Go for simple, tasty dishes that don't take long to prepare ·  Clean the grill grid while it's still hot. You'll save yourself a lot of bother!

The perfect awning for the perfect destination Europe has everything, and no other type of holiday is as flexible as camping when it comes to seeing Las Ramblas in Barcelona, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Berlin Wall, the vineyards of France, Denmark's sandy beaches and the North Cape But what is the best kind of awning if you are driving from place to place in the southern sun, or going skiing in Sweden? No two caravan/awning combinations are the same when you pack for a holiday, and "What should I bring?" is a question often discussed between campers. And there is no set recipe for this, as it basically comes down to your own personal needs, on the type of camping holiday you have chosen. Do you drive a lot from place to place? How much should it weigh? What do you have with you? Will you be spending much time at all getting to the site, and what weather conditions might you be exposed to on your holiday? Getting from A to B, quickly and easily If you are going to be out and about on your holiday, and the climate lends itself to sitting out late into the evening, as is normally the case when you head south to the M editerranean or the Adriatic in the summer, you could really do with a sun canopy, a wind screen and camping furniture. The dew does not fall in the same way as it does in northern Europe or in the mountains. A little of everything If you are unsure whether you will always be holidaying in warmer climes or switching destination on every trip, you might want to travel around with a smaller awning, the front and sides of which can be removed depending on the weather. You can also choose to close the awning completely in bad weather. A lightweight awning is also ideal if you camp in the spring and autumn when the sun may be out, but the wind is cold. This will give you many pleasant hours in the warm awning, which is also easy to put up. Comfort and luxury If you are pitched somewhere over a longer

period, and plan to come and go to your holiday home, you do not normally have to worry too much about the weight. You might want to put up a bigger, ultra stable awning, which can withstand all weathers. Here, the awning serves as a conservatory in relation to the caravan, and it is typically a space where you will spend many hours. A handy tip is to lay a good floor in the awning, to ensure that you have full use of it and a high level of comfort while on holiday. When you have put the awning up, and you know that you will be in the same place for a long time, you can furnish it with better furniture, and many people even choose to have a TV, fridge and outdoor kitchen in the awning, so they don't have to do without anything on their holiday. The lure of snow More and more people are beginning to camp in the winter. This can be in the mountains to the north or the Alps to the south. Not necessarily to ski, but just to get out into the winter nature. However, in many places, this season can be a time of extreme weather, placing extra demands on your awning and the equipment you bring with you on the trip. So, winter awnings and universal awnings also look different to other awnings. Above all, they must be able to bear the weight of snow, or cause it to slide off the roof. Many people who camp all year round, or p articularly in winter, also use their u niversal awning in the spring and autumn, when they are not typically out as much as in the summer. Like spring and autumn camping, winter camping is a wonderful experience and quite unlike camping under the baking sun. Fortunately, one does not preclude the other. 19

There's life in the old Isabella yet! The disposable culture seems to be abating, and it has become in to acquire old things that still work. Just ask Laila Sand, who loves camping, but not the modern version. This has led her on an incredible journey.

20

It can be a challenge to acquire old camping equipment that has retained its quality, but we are talking here about an extraordinary product that, though faded after many years in the sun, remains in tip-top condition, and keeps the rain out as if it were brand new. It was produced in 1979, and it says everything about the quality that Isabella demands in its products. “I love camping. The tranquillity and proximity to nature, the simple life, and the fact that I get to decide what I want to do and when. Quite simply, I wanted a caravan and awning which were old, so I didn't have to spend too much money on them. First I found the caravan, a Sprite Alpin, and then the awning, which fits it perfectly, says Laila Sand.

The old yet incredibly cosy holiday home is currently pitched at a seaside campsite in Denmark, and holiday homes don't come cheaper or more lovely than that. We have an amazing view of the water, and when an old Isabella wind screen became available, it was absolutely perfect. Like the awning, the material of the wind screen is as good as new, just slightly faded by the sun. The quality is impressive. “I am really impressed that the awning and the wind screen are in better condition than the caravan. It stands out in all weathers, and I maintain it with water and reproofing. Again, very simple, which means that I don't have to spend my

weekends and holidays on all the practical stuff, but enjoying life, and that suits me down to the ground,” Laila explains, as she soaks up the sun from her chair. There are lots of other guests at the campsite in camper vans and caravans with awnings, all with different set-ups. Thankfully. This old awning and wind screen stand out from all the rest, and somehow, it just looks more cosy, even though that is not necessarily the case. What is 100% true, however, is that this awning is of the highest quality – just as the new awnings are today.

Ivan Odgaard 22

From cross-country ski pole to awning pole Innovation and product development are just two of the secrets behind the high quality of Isabella's extensive range, but some of our products have been "discovered" almost quite by chance. Up until the early 1980s, a set of awning poles consisted entirely of steel poles. While on a skiing trip, the Odgaard brothers fell into conversation about how a ski pole, which was both solid and light, could perhaps be used as an awning pole, triggering the development of a new awning pole. After several years' research, meetings with foreign suppliers and hours of development, followed by test upon test, the new awning pole began to take shape. One of the reasons for its success is the fact that the two brothers never give up on an idea. Only the best is good enough, and they keep at it until they can look each other in the eye and know that the mission has been accomplished. And this is always done in close cooperation with all employees. Development is a never-ending process The journey from heavy steel pole to light Carbon-X pole has been long. Isabella established its own pole factory, Campion Production A/S, in the late 1980s. Here, working in close collaboration with a highly dedicated employee, the brothers spent endless hours learning the craft and refining it to produce perfect steel poles and carbon fibre poles. Not only did they develop the products themselves, but the entire production unit and all the tools used to achieve their goal were also developed by the innovative inventors. A new team is responsible for this side of the development today, but Ivan and Peder both often chip in with their ideas. The new ideas combined with years of experience make for a good result. The development of awning poles and all the other functionalities that go into an a wning will never stop. Working together with the employees, the two brothers have also helped develop the new T-Rex awning pole bracket, the characteristic IsaFlex rubber strap between the awning and peg, the FixOn awning bracket, the Hercules pole tensioner, and much more besides. And the demand for high quality lives on, as Isabella's range can withstand all types of camping, in all weathers, all year round. Isabella awnings are suitable for use in the sun, snow, wind and rain.

The Odgaard brothers After more than 40 years' development work, the sons of Isabella founder Søren Odgaard, Ivan and Peder, continue to share their advice with the current development team at Isabella. "I played with everything that can be put together and taken apart. LEGO, naturally, but all sorts of other things, too. Sometimes I disassembled things to the point that they could not be reassembled. I have learnt so much from this," explains Ivan Odgaard. After a spell in the warehouse as a young teenager, Ivan trained as a toolmaker, but also worked for a period at the Swedish caravan factory Kabe before returning to production. He worked in all areas, learning all stages of production in the process. Not just today, but over the past 40 years, too. His younger brother Peder Odgaard has always been more into drawing, and his ideas often took shape on paper in the form of various drawings. "It's true. I've always been more into designing and building things. I'm always getting ideas about how things can look and how they can be used. It's really exciting developing things, even though you know that it can take a lot longer than you think," says Peder Odgaard.

Peder Odgaard

With this philosophy in mind, 68-year-old Ivan Odgaard and 66-year-old Peder Odgaard have continued their father's life's work – Isabella – for decades. 23

Three premium products Today, Isabella offers three different types of poles: Zinox steel poles, Carbon-X and the latest addition, Zinox Mega Frame. Zinox steel poles lend themselves to permanent pitching, universal and winter awnings. Carbon-X: Best for touring awnings and Isabella's lightweight awnings. Zinox Mega Frame is for year-round awnings.

CarbonX™ frame a carbon-fibre reinforced fibreglass frame, is suitable for both permanent and touring c aravanning. Carbon Fibres are combined with glass fibres in varying amounts, according to pole diameters, to offer maximum strength. The frame is light and fully corrosion resistant. All CarbonX frames are supplied with the IsaFix locking m echanism. With IsaFix in place, keeping the frame in position is easy. With one press of the hand grip, a discreet “click” tells you IsaFix is locked in position.

Zinox™ steel frame is hot galvanised both inside and out to extend its life and to meet all load bearing requirements. The steel frame is made of ISO-certified high-strength steel. The strength of the Zinox steel frame makes it particularly suitable for pitching your caravan permanently – and it is included with all Universal and winter porch awnings, because caravanning in the off-peak seasons demands great structural stability due to weather conditions such as strong winds and snow.

Zinox™ MegaFrame The Zinox MegaFrame is a durable tubular steel frame (material thickness: 32 mm/1.2 mm) with welded corners and MegaFix on the poles. MegaFrame is designed for year-round use with a full awning which can remain standing all year, and can withstand powerful storms, s nowfall and torrential rain. The Zinox MegaFrame is supplied with two extra rafter poles, as well as one Hercules 32.5 mm.

Perhaps the world's most carefully considered awning… Experienced campers know an Isabella awning when they see one. They don't need to see the name to recognise Isabella's DNA in the colours, shape, quality and – perhaps most importantly – the special design that makes Isabella awnings recognisable from afar. An awning unites both form and function An Isabella awning is recognisable from its special round windows, a harlequin striped sunshade along the end, wide doors at the front, long overhang wings and, last but not least, large window panels that let the light flood in. Our goal is obviously to create an attractive, harmonious awning, but an equally important part of the job is creating good camping comfort. Colours are indicative of the times we are living in – and adapt to the prevailing mood You can tell from our use of colour whether we are in a time of prosperity or depression. In times of economic downturn, colours are subdued. During an economic boom, we become more daring. Commodore Insignia and Ambassador are good examples of that. The special Insignia blue is quite the departure from the more seasonal colours, signalling positive optimism. All you can see... As with a lot of other Scandinavian design, Isabella strives to create timeless design. We use colour not only to set the mood, but also to accentuate the clean-cut, Scandinavian design. An Isabella a wning will never be "in fashion". However, it will remain a style icon for many seasons to come. At Isabella, we also take our cue from the design and colour scheme of cars and caravans in order to achieve an overall harmony, the best we can. It is also part of our job to ensure that

26

the different models can be adapted to the different models of caravans. This is where the A-measurement system comes in, which Isabella has developed. And all that you can't see... All Isabella awnings are equipped with reinforcement overlaps of fabric to withstand wear. This means that there are visible patches in different materials inside the awning, all depending on where they are needed. Sudden storms are becoming an increasingly frequent feature of summer weather. Isabella awnings have special storm reinforcement patches in the ends, designed to break off before the awning can fall apart, potentially damaging nearby caravans or cars. Read more about all the special Isabella details on page 15. Materials that stand the test of reality The longevity of the awning is dependent upon the ability of the materials to withstand daily use and climatic influences, particularly the sun and rain. We take this into account in our choice of materials. All materials are developed and produced in Europe. This means that they meet all EU requirements. We ensure that everything is thoroughly tested down to the smallest detail in relation to light and environmental influences on surfaces and surface treatments.

Become a camper in the space of a weekend Are you one of those who is slightly envious of the p eople sitting enjoying themselves in the awning or in front of their family tent while the children have fun at the playground with their friends? Or do you dream of having the freedom to decide where you go and how long you want to be there? If the answer is yes, then camping is definitely for you. Getting off to a good start The best and cheapest way to get s tarted is by trying it out. Is the life and the atmosphere on a campsite the right thing for you at all? You are bound to have s omeone in your circle of friends or family who camps. Ask if you can visit them – ideally at different campsites – because five-star luxury is not necessarily for you. It may well be that you think that a nice, three-star campsite with good facilities and a small playground covers your needs. There is also a big difference between camping near a town or at the end of a long country road. Once you have found out whether life on the campsite is for you and your kids, you need to find out how you will camp. Numerous options There is no other type of holiday that can be done in so many different ways as camping. Some people choose camping instead of a holiday cottage. The caravan is p ermanently pitched in the same place, and there is no maintenance or gardening. Others travel from place to place, seeking new e xperiences on every trip. The tent, which is the oldest form of camping of all, is still popular today, because a lot of people enjoy the simplicity of it compared to all the amenities they have at home. Others opt for the large, well-equipped c aravan with everything their heart desires, as they do not want to risk having to manage without something while on holiday. And then there is the trailer tent or the small, light caravan, which is somewhere in between. A form of camping holiday still gaining in popularity throughout Europe is the camper van – and it is easy to understand why. Just like the caravan, the little house on wheels represents the optimum freedom to enjoy a destination, and drive on when the desire for new experiences takes you. If you are unsure about the type of camping best suited to you, start by b orrowing, renting or buying second-hand. A rapid learning curve Whatever form of camping you choose, it does not take long to become familiar with things, but battling with a new tent or a barbecue that needs to be put together can be quite a d ifferent matter, so do y ourself a favour and go on a weekend trip close to home for a practice run before heading off on your first real camping trip. And even if you are not big on reading instruction manuals, you may save yourself a lot of time by actually doing it. Today, there are also a lot of videos online showing you how to put up an awning, etc. Preparation is the key to success; do it right and you stand to enjoy a far more relaxing holiday. Check list ·  Passports and important papers such as insurance ·  List of campsites ·  Equipment check – particularly if it is a recent purchase ·  Car check including entertainment for the drive ·  Caravan/camper van check – Is everything working? ·  Awning/tent check – Have you tried putting it up? ·  Packing list – remember to keep an eye on the weight when loading ·  The journey there and back – Have you got everything? 31

Tips and tricks A great many talented people work with Isabella every single day. We have asked a number of them from all over Europe for their top Isabella tips to help ensure that your awning stands better and lasts longer. Safelock is smart The awning rail in the caravan can be both too tight and a little too loose. If it is tight, it is a good idea to use Aqua-Tex, before sliding the awning onto the rail. If it is too loose, Safelock is a good solution, to ensure the awning stays where you want it when putting it up. A classic – Don't forget the rafter poles! Contrary to what many people believe, the awning's rafter poles should not be positioned horizontally along the seam. The pole should follow the curve to support the roof, making it easier to tighten the awning. DropStop stops water from getting in But only when it is mounted correctly, so you should always check that it is in the right position, as it can move when putting the awning up. If it is mounted correctly, you have a waterproof awning. A strong set of legs It is a good idea to place Stabilo support feet under the legs of the awning to prevent them from sinking into the ground when it is tightened up. Look after the windows When you roll up the windows, roll them in under themselves. That way, they will not accumulate water and dirt, and last longer as a result. When you put the panel down, make sure that it is not lying directly on the veranda pole. Draw the curtains before opening up. Always use the foot straps Always use the foot straps on both corner legs and on the middle leg. There should always be a distance of 7–16 cm (may vary from caravan to caravan) to the ground from the edging that finishes off the a wning to the beginning of the mud flap. This is very important in order to have tension in the pegging elastics all the way round the awning. When there is tension in the pegging elastics all the way round, the awning is well tensioned, and thus better protected against wind and weather. Pegging order Start inside the caravan itself, in both corners, 32

followed by the two front corner legs. Next come the sides, and finally the front. When the entire awning is pegged outside, you can peg inside. A job for the big pegs If you are a permanent pitcher and your awning is pitched for a long time, we recommend using 30 cm pegs for the entire awning. Greater stability IsaLink gives you even greater stability in your awning. It is highly recommended when you are near the sea or in other windy places.1 In stormy weather Hopefully you camp all year – even when it's windy. The storm tensioning should be loose when fitted. It should not tension the awning all the time. It should only kick in when the wind takes hold of the awning, thus keeping it in place and preventing it from flying away. How to get heat out of the awning It's lovely when it's nice and warm on holiday, but what if it gets too hot in the awning? All Isabella awnings have built-in ventilation options. They are located in different places depending on which model you have. When you want to air the awning, simply open the ventilation, ideally in several places to allow the air to circulate. If it is very hot, you can open the awning completely, or remove a piece of the awning in the models where this is possible. Prolong the life of your zips It is a good idea to cross-peg any zips that you don't use to get in and out of the awning so that there is not constant pressure on them. This will prolong their life.2 Quiet, please! With a small piece of cloth, a so-called ZipCover, on the zips, you can avoid the noise that they make when they hit each other. Some people also find them decorative. Cleaning the awning, windows and curtains Do not use the cleaning products you use at home for your awning, i.e. no soap. Use plenty of clean water and a soft brush instead.

Spray the awning with water, and then start brushing, rinsing off any dirt removed in the process. Finish off by rinsing thoroughly. This should be done at least a couple of times during the season. Ensure that extra attention is given to particularly exposed areas such as the roof, sides and all corners. The treatment described applies to both the canvas and windows. Do not use alcohol or window cleaning products for PVC windows – it will ruin them. The curtains in Isabella awnings should be washed at 30°C, and should not be tumble dried. For gentle yet effective cleaning, we recommend the IsaClean products. Some cleaning required The last thing you want to be thinking about on your holiday is cleaning, but it is n evertheless a good idea to vacuum your awning to prevent the build-up of soil dust and bacteria. Otherwise, there is an increased risk of it becoming mouldy when the humidity rises. Avoiding a wet weekend You want it to be warm and comfortable in the awning, and this can be a challenge when faced with the vagaries of nature. Feel free to add a tarpaulin, which is slightly larger than the awning. For a three-metre awning, you will need 3.2 m, so that there is 20 cm to put up the side of the awning, ensuring that the water runs in under the tarpaulin and down into the ground rather than into the awning. Carpeting conundrums no more! If you have carpet in your awning, it is most comfortable to walk on when it is nice and flat. Use Isagrip so that the pegs gain a better grip, fixing the carpet firmly in place. Save the foil When you unpack your new awning, all of the windows are covered with a thin foam foil to protect them. Keep it for when you pack the awning away between trips. This will help prolong the life of your awning. NB. It should not be wet or damp.

PENTA THIRTY Penta Thirty has everything you require from a permanent pitch awning – a depth of 3.5 m without the nuisance of a centre pole, and designed so that every inch of space is used. The material used is Isacryl, which allows the awning to breathe. Mosquito net windows in both sides, and the numerous opening options, make for an optimal indoor climate. A sand-coloured roof imbues the awning with a soft warm light and the combination of the light strip in the roof and the large windows of clear film make the Penta Thirty awning a bright and friendly place to spend time. The sturdy pole construction and the pentagonal shape mean stability for a long season at the campsite. Choose between the strong Zinox steel frame or the extra-strong Zinox MegaFrame for added stability. The combination of MegaFrame with extra winter securing means you can use your Penta Thirty all year round.

Removable/fold-down panels: Front, side and corner panels Special details: Overhang all the way around, light panels in middle of roof. Two large side ventilation windows with mosquito nets1, corner door right front, two door options. Supplied as standard with: Cube Creme curtains, veranda pole, draught skirt, wheel arch cover, FixOn, pole and peg bags, awning bag and peg remover. Winter camping – what could be cosier? 56

If you already camp in your caravan, there is no need to put it away when summer is over. Winter camping is fantastic. Caution and care There is nothing to fear from taking your caravan and awning on a long trip in the winter weather, but caution and care are a matter of course. If you have prepared a little for the journey before setting off, drive according to the conditions and take your time, there's nothing more to it than hopping in the car and off you go! Ahead of you await camping e xperiences quite unlike anything you are used to from the summer. Before leaving, make sure that the vehicle's "footwear" is in order. It is very important to have good tyres on both the car and caravan or camper van. When it comes to tyres on the car, the rules differ slightly in European countries, so be sure to check them before departure. You must, of course, make sure that you have the right equipment, such as snow chains, snow shovel, etc., and the right winter awning, too. Try it out Once you've got the car and caravan sorted, it's a good idea to get some experience of how it behaves in slippery conditions. When the opportunity arises and the first snow falls, hitch the caravan onto your car and familiarise yourself with how it handles in the winter – probably quite different to what you're used to from driving in the summer. We recommend having a test run on both the motorway and A roads because this will give you a good feel for the stability when towing a caravan on slippery roads as well as the extra pulling power of the car. Advanced driving course It is also a good idea to try driving in a large empty car park, and practise manoeuvring and braking. Here, too, you will find that towing a caravan is quite a different matter in the snow. First, try emergency braking, and then expand this exercise to include turning while braking. Be careful and remember that this is a public area. Weather conditions Weather conditions will depend on w here you're heading. If you're off to the Alps, snow clearing is generally very effective on motorways and A roads throughout the continent. In Sweden and Norway, only the A roads are cleared, otherwise they just drive according to the conditions. So you are likely to encounter roads with a lot of snow. If you begin to feel uneasy about driving in such conditions, simply turn off at the next lay-by and enjoy yourself in the warmth of your caravan until you feel safe to drive again. The next lay-by is never far away on the continent, although they are further apart in Norway and Sweden, especially in the far north. No matter where your winter camping trip takes you, it is extremely important to allow plenty of time to get there.

En route to the campsite The last few kilometres are often the ones that cause the greatest uncertainty on the e ntire journey. Getting all the way to your d estination is easy enough, but the last 500 metres up to the actual campsite can be snowy and are often uphill. But fear not. If in doubt about whether your car has enough power to get all the way up, drive up without the caravan first. Leave it in a car park or at a shopping centre in the nearest town. Many campsites offer to tow the caravan to the pitch, often by tractor, which can pull it the last stretch. The campsites in the north are often right up the pistes, surrounded by countryside. Down south, they tend to be located in or just outside the town, so you have to take the ski bus or drive your own car to get to the pistes. However, towns have more to offer non-skiers. Fun on the campsite There is a completely different atmosphere on the campsite in winter. Even though it's cold, people are still outside. Snow bars are often built, and the snow is shovelled off the roofs while the kids sledge. In other words, people enjoy each other's company and their caravans, while the children play in the clean, frosty snow, which is in plentiful supply. It might be hard to get the kids in at bedtime, but you'll have no problem getting them off to sleep! What makes the awning so special Whatever time of the year you go camping, the awning is a quite special place. Some people use it as a practical storage room with space for their skis, ski boots and barbecue. Others make it more homely and use the awning on days when the sun peeks through to enjoy a nice lunch al fresco. If there is space for a gas heater, even more hours can be spent in the awning – even in the evenings. R egardless of how the awning is used, it has a quite special function when it comes to heating the caravan. The awning is a fantastic heat sluice. Essential items to pack in winter ·  Be sure to pack a tow rope, snow shovel, head lamp, jump leads, warm clothes and boots in your winter luggage. ·  And don't forget the barbecue. Barbecue food tastes delicious in the winter, too. Isabella Universal and Winter are the most ideal awnings for winter camping.

UNIVERSAL 420 COAL & 360 COAL Thanks to their great strength and stability, the Universal 420 Coal and Universal 360 Coal porches can be put up in all weather conditions – all year round. Two support poles press the sewn-in foam pads securely against the side of the caravan, while click profiles hold the sides directly on the support pole for a perfect seal. Universal 420 Coal and Universal 360 Coal have doors in both sides and large windows across the front, giving a good view. The strong Zinox steel frame ensures good stability. If U niversal 420 Coal or Universal 360 Coal is to be used as a year-round awning, we recommend the fitting of winter securing and an inner roof (optional extras). The roof construction provides unobstructed opening of the caravan door and minimal build-up of snow.

VILLA 550 AND 650 - ALL YEAR Villa a unique year-round/permanent pitching awning, available in two widths. Its construction has been designed with maximum stability and durability in mind. Isabella Villa is modular, and the choice of front panels means that you can construct your Villa just as you want it. The awning should not only be suitable for use on hot summer days, but also a good alternative when the snow is lying on the ground. Year-round use places high demands on the equipment, and Isabella Villa is composed of the best materials. The optimal sloping of the roof prevents the build-up of snow. Light is life, and the large windows and white curtains contribute to a bright, comfortable living space. The window material can withstand extreme cold, and Villa is also equipped with flaps in the fabric to make it easy to close and cover the windows as required. The deep overhang all the way around prevents dirt and pollution, so you can spend your days relaxing, instead of on maintenance. Isabella Villa has been designed to make it easy for you to put up yourself. Your local dealer can also advise you if you wish to have it ready-assembled. The modules are zipped together, simplifying the construction and making it easy to change the front modules without having to dismantle the entire awning. 62

Isabella Villa is equipped with a padded sluice and connecting piece in the roof, so it can be used on all sizes of caravan (special adjustment may be necessary, especially on small caravans). The caravan can be attached or removed in a few easy steps, though full backing is required (extra) if Isabella Villa is to stand without the caravan. Isabella Villa can also be adapted as standard to mobile homes with a max. height of 265 cm.

ISABELLA GROUND COVER

Isabella – layer upon layer Start by laying Ground Cover over an area bigger than the awning to protect the mudflaps and awning materials. Then lay Isabella Floor over the entire awning area, remember the edging strips for a neat finish especially in doorways. A Comfort Carpet keeps the heat in and is soft and comfortable to walk on. Finally, lay an Isabella Carpet for a beautiful finish that’s easy to keep clean. 1 ISABELLA GROUND COVER is the perfect underlay – a thin but strong sheet that lies on the ground, it protects the awning canvas from soil and mud, and because the m udflaps are not in contact with the ground they are easier to clean. Supplied on rolls of 2 x 18 m (36 m2). Ground Cover is fully breathable and suitable for touring sites. 2 ISABELLA FLOOR If you spend a lot of time in your awning, you want good insulation, and a floor that is smooth and level. Isabella Floor offers a full range of advantages. It is easy to install without the use of tools, the 50 x 50 cm tiles simply snap together like building blocks, no other parts are needed. It is easy to store and exceptionally durable. 3 ISABELLA GROUND SHEET The Isabella Ground Sheet is available in different sizes to fit the awnings. Put it under the awning carpet to avoid moisture from the soil. Isabella Ground Sheet has plastic reinforcements in the corners with ring for pegging and reinforced edges, so it will last for years. Colour: Anthracite. Material: PU 160 g/m2 Depth: 270, 320 or 370 cm Lengths: 500, 600, 700 or 800 cm 4 ISABELLA COMFORT CARPET is a soft, insulating comfort underlay which is placed between the plastic barrier or wooden floor and the awning floor covering to keep cold and damp at bay. It also provides a soft floor area to sit and walk on. Supplied on rolls of 1.5 x 15 m (22.5 m2). 5 ISABELLA CARPET

With the option to purchase edges for Isabella Floor, you can create a beautiful finish. 98

To determine the “A-size”: Park the caravan on level ground. The “A-size” is the length from ground level, through the awning channel and back down to the ground. This can be done easily with a piece of string. We have a database of caravan sizes from 1970 onwards on our website, www.isabella.net. For Porch/ Part awnings the caravan channel height determines the fit. All Isabella full awnings can also be used as part awnings. Using a foam pad, support pole and two click profiles. Measure your caravan “Full awning as large/ small Porch” as shown and match to the nearest Isabella “A” size. This solution works for new and older models the parts are all supplied as optional extras.

All Isabella awnings are supplied with curtains, and the unique thing about the Prisma awning is that you have two different curtain designs to choose from. The curtains are carefully designed to match the awning colours for a harmonious look. The specially developed curtain system ensures that it is easy to put up and take down again. All Isabella curtain materials are given a finishing treatment to withstand environmental impacts, such as mould, rot, fungi or mildew, usually caused by differences in temperature. This special finishing treatment can be restored after washing by ironing the curtain.

Exceptional materials Isabella uses only the best materials, made by the world’s leading suppliers.

PVC/Polyester is intensely resilient and water resistant material.

Isacryl is a spinneret-dyed (i.e. the fibres are dyed), textured-weave, durable acrylic material. Isacryl has the highest achievable fade-resistance thanks to the pigmentation method. The density of the weave plus the impregnation all the way through prevent water ingress. Nevertheless, Isacryl is a breathable material, which facilitates the best possible indoor climate in the awning.

IsaLite is a coated polyester material, which is durable, lightweight and easy to keep clean. The window foil is the best available on the market. In some of the models, the window foil is also tinted to tone down the sun’s rays, and in awnings for use in winter, a foil is used which can withstand sub-zero temperatures.

All Isabella awning roofs are made of strong, UV protective acrylate-coated polyester, with an added top coat to help prevent the b uild-up of dirt. The roof fabric is impregnated in 3 layers (with the exception of Capri, which, in order to make it lighter and more touring-friendly, has 2 layers). The inside is patterned to create a pleasant indoor environment, and this also helps make any dirt on the outside less noticeable.

Isacryl Light is a spinneret-dyed (i.e. the fibres are dyed) extra lightweight acrylic material, making it especially suitable for touring.
