Welcome to the

The Indiana Green Expo is Indiana’s largest and most comprehensive green industry educational conference and trade show serving Indiana and the Midwest. The 2013 Indiana Green Expo (IGE) is sponsored by the Indiana Nursery & Landscape Association and the Midwest Regional Turf Foundation. Unlike some for-profit trade shows, all proceeds from the IGE are used directly to better our industry through research, educational programming and other supporting functions. Since the IGE is managed by green industry professionals for green industry professionals, you’ll find targeted, industry-specific products, information, education and networking that you can use immediately in your profession. This year Purdue University and industry have worked together to bring you the best line up yet! Our educational programming has something for all facets of the green industry. The trade show features vendors with new products and show specials to make it worth your while. Take your time to visit as many as possible! We thank you for joining us this year and look forward to seeing you again in 2014! Workshops

Wednesday, January 9, 2013 Today’s Highlights Education: All workshops (a – H) today Exhibitor Set Up: 10:00 am – 5:00 pm

Workshops Workshop A: Hardscapes 101: Overview of Natural Stone and Manmade Products Robert Johnstone, Fireboulder 9:00 am – 12:00 pm • Room 143 Topics covered will be outdoor kitchens to simple garden paths to everything in between. There will be a focus on job costing, estimating, and overhead recovery that all small businesses need to know. The installation portion will include natural stone patios and walkways, retaining and decorative walls, as well as manmade pavers and walls. Discussion of correct and incorrect installation will be included. This class will also include the secrets of the trade by saving time on job sites. The class will go over tools and products to help in installation and to demonstrate how they work. A question and answer session at the end will be held to address your specific issues. Workshop B: Improving Diagnostic Skills: Identifying Diseases, Insects, and Environmental Stress of Landscape Plants Cliff Sadof, Tom Creswell, Janna Beckerman, and Gail Ruhl with Purdue University and George Brenn, Four Seasons Landscaping Nursery 9:00 am – 12:00 pm • Room 142 CCH = 2: 3.0/3a: 3.0/3b: 3.0/6: 3.0/RT: 3.0 This interactive workshop will focus on IAH chapters 8 and 9, covering diagnosis, ID and management of insect and disease problems of landscape plants. Topics will include symptoms of diseases, cultural factors and environmental stress (which will be a BIG issue in 2013) along with insect and mite identification and management. Ongoing effects of the 2012 drought will be discussed, along with review of common (and not so common) problems you may see on ornamentals in 2013. Instructors are from Purdue: Entomology, Botany & Plant Pathology, and Plant & Pest Diagnostic Lab. This is a “high tech” intense, hands on review of IAH materials and will benefit all IAH’s and any industry personnel who deal with pest diagnosis. (3 CEU’s for IAH) Wednesday’s schedule continues on page 4. 2

Workshops

Wednesday, January 9, 2013 Workshop C: Understanding and Enhancing Herbicide Activity Aaron Patton, Purdue University 9:00 am – 12:00 pm • Room 139 • CCH = 3b: 3.0/RT: 3.0 A common question is, “Why didn’t the herbicide work and kill the weed?” This workshop will help you better understand how to answer that question for yourself and improve your weed control by better understanding herbicide activity. Proper application timing, herbicide mode of action, surfactants, formulations, spray volume, antagonism, and much more will be discussed. Participants will receive a copy of the newly revised 2013 edition of “Turfgrass Weed Control for Professionals”.

Workshop D: Selecting Species and Planting Improved Cultivars for Enhanced Turf Performance Cale Bigelow, Tracy Tudor, and Quincy Law, Purdue University 9:00 am – 12:00 pm • Room 134 • CCH = 3b: 3.0/RT: 3.0 New turf cultivars/varieties for lawn and sports turf are available to help reduce maintenance inputs and increase turf persistence during stressful weather. Some examples of these improvements are increased drought tolerance, improved disease and insect tolerance, and an increased overall appearance. However, finding information on which cultivars/varieties are best can sometimes be difficult. This workshop will discuss species strengths and weaknesses, establishment techniques, species selection for geographic locations and intended use. A new online tool for selecting a turf species will be demonstrated as well as several websites to find the latest information on the turf quality, drought tolerance, and pest tolerance of many new improved turfgrass cultivars. Workshop E: Landscape Industry Certified (CLT-Exterior) Review & Written Exam Jim Messmer, Vincennes University, retired • Room 143 1:00 – 3:00 pm: CLT Review (additional fee*) 3:00 – 5:00 pm: CLT Exam Jim Messmer will review the basics of CORE training plus applicable modules (Softscape, Hardscape, Irrigation, Turf and Ornamental) followed by the written exam. * Contact the INLA (800-443-7336) for program materials which are an additional fee. 4

Workshops

Wednesday, January 9, 2013 Workshop F: Indiana Accredited Horticulturist (IAH) Review and Exam Melissa Mravec, Allen Landscape • Room 142 1:00 – 3:00 pm: IAH Review (additional fee*) 3:00 – 5:00 pm: IAH Exam As a master IAH and experienced industry professional, Melissa will aid you in preparing for the afternoon exam. There will be ample time for questions and individual attention. The review is also a great refresher for those already certified — earn IAH CEUs by attending. * Contact the INLA (800-443-7336) for program materials which are an additional fee.

Workshop G: Pond Maintenance and Aquatic Weed Control Craig Tracy, ASI Watercare/Midwest Industrial Components 1:00 – 4:00 pm • Room 139 • CCH = 5: 3.0/RT: 3.0 This workshop will help participants understand why ponds have weed problems and what to do about them. Learn what proactive steps can be implemented to improve the health of ponds. Additionally, learn what reactive approaches are needed when there is a problem and learn how to answer the question “What product(s) should I use?”. Pond aeration options will also be discussed and more.

Workshop h: Getting Your Hands Dirty: Basic Soil Fundamentals Jon Trappe and Quincy Law, Purdue University 1:00 – 4:00 pm • Room 134 • CCH = 3b: 3.0/RT: 3.0 This workshop will highlight basic soil science principles essential for managers in the green industry to know. Live demonstrations and hands-on exercises will help participants learn these fundamentals. Topics to be discussed will include soil sampling and testing, soil texture, structure, drainage, organic matter, and more with discussion of how these relate to managing turf and ornamentals. The participants will gain a greater understanding and appreciation for the importance of soil science in the green industry.
