When I woke up this morning I experienced a moment of complete disorientation, the type that occurs when you have been travelling too much and are not sure of where you are or what day it is. In the good old days you could just blink a few times, splash a bit of water on your face and have a look around to get yourself oriented, but not today. With the way workplace design has evolved, it’s not easy to discern home from work, or from a good place to have a coffee or beer. If you combine this with the outfits some people wear to the office, you could get really confused. Today more than ever, workplace designs are blurring the boundaries between work, home and entertainment. Much of this is the result of the workplace needing to respond to a wide range of drivers such as furthering the company’s business objectives, representing brand values, expressing the company’s corporate social responsibility and influencing their culture. In addition, a work environment today is often as much about creating a strong sense of community, through both physical and virtual means, than it is about where people work. Most importantly, there is a clear emphasis today on people – how they connect, how they create and how they feel about themselves and the companies they work for – which has become a foundation for the way we design space.
Combined with the realities of the global economy and economic uncertainty, these drivers lead to a situation where we need to challenge ourselves as businesses and as designers to do more with less and to strive for design outcomes that offer the highest degree of flexibility possible. Throw into the mix a greater awareness of our planet and its limited resources and you get a new workplace aesthetic. This renewed design rationale is born from our need to create environments that encourage interaction and creativity, and is reflective of a ‘post oil’ society that is struggling to be more accountable for what it leaves behind. The workplace of today has the unprecedented task of needing to reduce its impact on the planet while making a greater impact on the people that occupy it. How will it do this? Creating communities Most organisations today are looking to encourage connection. In fact with the rise in ‘mobile’ work initiatives, the role the physical environment plays in being ‘organisational glue’ is increased. We don’t go to work to work; we go to interact with others in the hopes of producing great ideas, products and services that demonstrate a greater level of creativity and innovation than our competition. In 2004, the creative pair reinvented the undercounter vanity, now known as The Shiro. The popularity of that design was the catalyst for the complete furniture range, as well as the Lavabo by CIBO basin collection. CIBO bathroomware designs such as The Onda and The Caldo are often mistaken for European imports. Furniture Furniture plays a pivotal role in environments where humans and technology intersect, as physical manifestations of social and cultural values. Interior and industrial designer, Matthew Sheargold explores what’s next for furniture in commercial interiors. Workplace The workplace continues to be driven by technological advancements and social developments. In recent years the coming together of these two forces has not only changed the way we live and work, it has generated a phenomenon so significant that it’s changed the way we communicate, the way we think and even the way we speak. Facebook, Twitter, iPhones and Blackberrys are just a few tools that are informing the ways in which we interact and work, and the direction in which we will move forward. The mobile office, hotdesking and hotelling are no longer just the domain of travelling executives and consultants; with an iPhone or Blackberry you can work from anywhere. As the tech savvy Gen-Ys grow into the workforce we see the balance shifting between those who have had to adapt to technology, to those who have grown up with it. This is a generation who not only embrace technology but have an environmental conscience as well. For the first time we will truly have a majority workforce capable of working remotely, mobile and paperless. We are now seeing entire offices hotdesking, the Macquarie Bank office in Sydney being one example. In recent years we’ve watched the office move from corporate formality to a more domestic aesthetic in a bid to soften the environment that we typically spend more of our waking hours in than our own home. That idea has evolved
further with many new corporate fit-outs drawing their aesthetic from the hospitality gene pool, creating lively, fresh and energetic environments. Perhaps a response to the environments – bars, hotels, restaurants and day spas – that we’d prefer to be in than work! Nevertheless, the focus is about a more human working environment and all that that entails. A noticeable shift is the acknowledgement that a ‘cookie cutter’ solution to both planning and aesthetics is no longer relevant. We now have environments that celebrate the diversity of the people who use them, the understanding that we each respond differently to our environment inspiring much more variation from room to room and floor to floor. This signals a significant shift in the way we specify furniture. Where we may have previously used one supplier to source furniture for a project, we are now hunting for different pieces from a variety of suppliers – commercial, domestic, hospitality and vintage, to cover the diversity of the fit-out. Cultural + identity The last time Ron Arad was in Australia, he spoke about Australian designers and our tendency to focus on designing sound, commercially viable furniture. In his view, what was missing was the passion, the ‘art’ as it were. It sat on my mind for some time and I wondered why this was so. I’ve interviewed a lot of designers over the years that have done
