This year we seT ouT To up The anTe – To increase The collaboraTion, increase The creaTiviTy and make saTurday in design a more curaTed experience for everyone The Australian design industry is developing into a full community of suppliers, designers and manufacturers and we welcome many new names and brands in to our Saturday in Design festivities in 2011. If you haven’t already, you’ll discover them at this year’s event – as well as rediscovering all your favourites. There is a lot on show, but to make it easier to get around and see everything you want to see, we’ve made it our mission to tighten up the geography. There are many companies sharing, three curated spaces showcasing multiple brands and more bus routes to assist in getting you where you need to go. In addition to the product launches and dressed up showrooms, we proudly present The Project once again. Our creative initiative has taken full flight and there are more collaborations this year than any other, for you to enjoy. Similarly, Launch Pad is developing into a complete prototype to production program, supported for many years by Living Edge and with How We Create coming on board this year as an integral manufacturing partner. We’ve recently completed a very successful edition of Saturday in Design Singapore for the first time, which proved to be a fantastic platform for Asian/Australian design dialogue. There was much Australian support and it’s reminded us what is really important, and what can be achieved through real design collaboration and communication. Enjoy it all, and we look forward to seeing you there.

in profile: BenJAMin HUBerT
We WelcoMe A nUMBer of inTernATionAl gUesTs THis yeAr, inclUding BenJAMin HUBerT, THe yoUng, energeTic designer WiTH An iMpressive porTfolio The UK designer graduated from Industrial Design and Technology at Loughborough University in 2006. A few months later he started his eponymous studio and began producing designs focussed on materiality, craftsmanship and simplicity, for which he is now internationally recognised. Despite his early achievements, Hubert maintains a down-to-earth attitude: “There are no shortcuts in this industry, it’s just all hard work and perseverance,” he says.
Specialising in furniture and lighting design, Hubert has done work for clients such as Casamania, Aram, Bla Station, Magis and De La Espada. Something of the golden child in UK design, Hubert has received a great deal of international media attention as well as prestigious awards including: Design of the Year in the British Design Awards 2010, Best Product at 100% Design’s Blueprint Awards in 2009, Homes and Gardens Young Designer of the Year at the Design Classic Awards 2010 and EDIDA International Young Designer of the Year 2010.

“[The success I’ve had] has allowed me to establish a vibrant studio that both works financially and gives us the freedom to take on some really interesting projects,” Hubert says. The designer comes to Great Dane Furniture at Saturday in Design as part of his Australian visit to launch his two latest pendant light designs. The ‘Roofer’ lampshade is made of coloured silicon tiles, applied to a metal frame like a tiled roof. The design allows you to be involved in the process, with the ability to rearrange the tiles clipped to the frame. Meanwhile, the ‘Chimney’ light is a celebration of material, with a thrown clay shade offering a weighty aesthetic and a reflective, white glazed interior. The design is reminiscent of a hanging terracotta pot.

Hubert’s works are currently on display in a Berlin exhibition, ‘Materiality’, until 30 August 2011. His inaugural solo show gives visitors the chance to see behind the scenes of his process, with various components of his designs displayed alongside finished works. Hubert’s design process is one of experimentation, research and ideation; with his studio space often over-run with sketches, plans and prototypes. However, each and every design begins with the basics of materials and processes relevant to the brief. At Saturday in Design, Benjamin Hubert will be on hand to give advice and mentoring to other emerging designers through the Launch Pad program. “I don’t know very much about Australian design, other than Marc Newson,” explains Hubert. “So I’m really interested to see what is emerging, particularly the new generations.” He will also be available throughout the event at the Great Dane Furniture showroom where artisans will be demonstrating their techniques and exploring the theme ‘Materiality: Make, Create, Play’. LARS DAHMANN Insitu have invited Lars Dahmann, founder and principal designer for USA-based Lebello, to be a part of their festivities. Lebello’s range of modern casual indoor/ outdoor furniture is well-suited to Australian environments, and Dahmann will bring one of his key production people to explain the craftsmanship behind the products. ROLF HAY Here for the Australian launch of the About A Chair Collection, is Rolf Hay, Danish designer and founder of Hay design studio. ALEXANDRIA Australian Workstation Manufacturers with Siren Design explore sustainability and openness with the brand new fit-out of the showroom. Siren has concentrated on AWM being “on show”, to “show off” their new product ideas, showroom and commitment to constant development and the ‘element’ of sustainability. The factory will be open for visitors to walk through and experience the manufacturing process. Burgtec Commercial Furniture, ABET LAMINATI and CSM Filing & Storage Solutions with Insight Projects have taken the fashion ‘element’ in the Alexandria precinct back in time to recreate the Mad Men-era, using silhouettes and live characters, finishes and colours to define a bold, distinctive and glamorous experience. Coco Republic Design Centre, Cadrys | Classic, Contemporary & Custom Rugs and Smeg Australia with David Hicks explore the principle of ‘Elementalism’: the fundamental, basic needs of man. A surprising, nomadic environment will feature collections from all three companies.
