IT’S BACK!

BRISBANE INDESIGN IS BACK, AND THIS YEAR WE HAVE PREPARED A FUSION OF DESIGN, FASHION AND ENTERTAINMENT TO CELEBRATE AND SHOWCASE BRISBANE’S UNIQUE CREATIVE INDUSTRY. Queensland is home to a thriving creative industry and is a major contender on the national design scene. In the four years since Brisbane Indesign 2008, the growth of Brisbane’s design industry has been inspiring, and we are excited to once again bring the creative community together with Australia’s, and the Region’s, leading design event. This year, Brisbane Indesign brings with it some exciting new elements that celebrate design in all of its senses – products, interiors, architecture, installations, fashion, food and entertainment. There really is something for everyone! Our first ever Up Late in Design in association with the James St Initiative transformed the James Street precinct on Thursday 24 May into a festival celebrating a fusion of fashion and design. And, following on from the huge success of The Project in Saturday in Design in Sydney, Melbourne and Singapore, we are introducing this initiative to Brisbane Indesign.

Not surprisingly, Brisbane’s design community has embraced The Project, and the creative collaborations promise to inspire and delight. Brisbane Indesign kicks off what promises to be a jam-packed year of world-class events for Indesign. In August, we will again take Saturday in Design to Melbourne, and following on from the inaugural edition of 2011, we will host the event again in Singapore in October. Enjoy this year’s Brisbane Indesign, and we look forward to seeing you in the Sunshine State again soon!

Brisbane also offers a strong creative engagement with Asia that in turn adds another element to the developing creative community. Initiatives such as the Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art see the city open its doors to welcome a cross-cultural discussion of art and creativity across the region. And buildings like GoMA are recognised as important architectural figures in the city’s landscape, creating crucial access points for the community to gather. Another concept that is attracting international attention to this eclectic design community is the QUENCH collective, an initiative sponsored by Indesign and the Queensland Government. Members of this creative

collective include six of the most promising designers to come out of Queensland: Alexander Lotersztain, Marc Harrison, Jason Bird, David Shaw, Surya Graf and Bjorn Rust. Member of the Quench Collective, Bjorn Rust, took time out from his busy schedule to give us his perspective of the Brisbane design scene. BJORN RUST/QUENCH COLLECTIVE Known in creative circles for his object design, Bjorn Rust is currently working on several self-initiated projects while also working for Street & Gardening Furniture Co. Bjorn is passionate about Brisbane design and his personal design philosophy is 01 Installation from the 6th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT6)

BRISBANE: DESIGN

BACKGROUND In the last five years an unexpected resurgence and a much-needed design push has been fostered by a supportive governing assembly and today we can see the product of this engagement that has seen the city develop into a bustling metropolitan hub. In terms of population, Brisbane has seen their largest growth in 2010, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, but it is still relatively small compared to Melbourne and Sydney. However, this by no means has stopped the creativity flowing; in fact the smaller design community seems to have assembled together and supported a stronger, more collaborative atmosphere that brings life to this city.

built on the idea of design as “a lifestyle. Every moment of every day can present the next great solution. One must be constantly aware or that solution may go unnoticed. That’s exciting,” he says of the ongoing challenge. Each day Bjorn creates something new and resolves underlying design problems. He works with other Brisbane designers to develop urban fixtures and furnishings around the city and he is also deeply involved in designing objects and systems, publishing and printing text, photography, films and sharing ideas. As a leading figure in the Brisbane design community, Bjorn believes one of Brisbane’s biggest strengths is that, “there is still room to instil a positive creative culture, given the opportunity”. Bjorn sees events like Brisbane Indesign as

extremely valuable because they make design visible to those that are not otherwise aware of it. Through the Quench Collective, Bjorn’s work has attracted a strong international following – one of the goals of the Collective is to promote the city’s unique design community. Already existing friends who had fun collaborating on varied design projects, the group of six decided to formalise their partnerships and present them on an international level. The contribution of the Quench Collective to the Queensland design scene has been invaluable in assisting the state to revitalise the design market and increasing public awareness of design. In response to this revitalisation, the State Government has been incredibly supportive in nurturing the local design team and the commercial benefits of initiatives

like the Quench Collective are being carried through into the global market. LOOKING AHEAD With a supportive governing body and a strong international network, it is no wonder that the Brisbane design scene is taking off and Arts Queensland are doing a wonderful job in activating designer’s dreams with a range of dedicated programs to support organisations and individual artisans through locally crafted design programs and industry development initiatives. Brisbane Indesign 2012 is set to be a standout event showcasing the most influential designers from the Brisbane design community and it is initiatives like this that get people connected, showcasing exciting new products and developments that help the industry reach critical mass.

The Brisbane Indesign event almost acts like an ecosystem of ideas and creativity to expose the economy of small and medium businesses. It is an exciting time for the Brisbane design industry to be establishing itself on a global scale because it is developing into a self-sufficient community of suppliers, designers and manufacturers that seem to be welcoming new names and creative initiatives by the hour. At this rate the city of Brisbane is ready to blow the international design scene out of the water and we are all excited to watch it launch into the market’s open arms.

COCO REPUBLIC and SMEG with HASSELL have created The Gallery Project; an exploration of art in design with the Smeg and Oly San Francisco Collections. COSH LIVING with BOSANQUET FOLEY ARCHITECTS and QUT 3RD YEAR INTERIOR DESIGN STUDENTS have responded to the theme by transforming paper into three different resolutions. Drawing on techniques employed in basket weaving and netting, the installation will be created to reflect hero pieces of furniture, accentuating form and defining their presence. The installation will create a fluid pathway for the viewer to negotiate their way through the showroom. INDESIGN GROUP and FIREWORKS GALLERY with PDT and QUT 3RD YEAR INTERIOR DESIGN STUDENTS find a Common Thread of inspiration between magazines and the output of design professionals. The installation at Fireworks Gallery depicts the theme by using magazines and

design to blur the boundaries between what constitutes a magazine and what is design. INSPIRATION OFFICE with WOODHEAD and QUT 3RD YEAR INTERIOR DESIGN STUDENTS explore the notion of an interconnected and interdependent Brisbane design community, supported by Quadric. Fortitude Valley will act as the Common Thread linking the local design community with each other. The elements of the Valley will be represented in a unique structure that will appear to grow throughout the day.

02

KING FURNITURE with DAVID HICKS have created three installations that take inspiration from the theme and have reworked it into their own title – ‘Work, Rest and Play’. Each facet of the installation responds to one of the words and will intepret ‘Work’, Rest and Play’ using the King Furniture Collection. The installation will allow the viewers to intimately connect with the furniture in the showroom.

LUXXBOX/OBJX with GEYER and QUT 3RD YEAR INTERIOR DESIGN STUDENTS have merged design with graffiti to transform the usual ‘white cube’ space of the Luxxbox showroom into an interactive tunnel with a photobooth and props for visitors to be photographed interacting with signature pieces of the product range.

01 Indesign Group and Fireworks Gallery with PDT and QUT 3rd year interior design students 02 Inspiration Office with Woodhead and QUT 3rd year interior design students 03 Luxxbox/OBJX with Geyer and QUT 3rd year interior design students 04 Café Culture with QUT 3rd year interior design students

“THE CONCEPT MARRIES VISITOR INTERACTIVITY AND PARTICIPATION WITH A GALLERY-STYLE JOURNEY ”

04

THE PROJECT

LIVING EDGE and BOLON FOR TAG with WOODS BAGOT and QUT 3RD YEAR INTERIOR DESIGN STUDENTS will bring this year’s theme to life. The concept marries visitor interactivity and participation with a gallery-style journey through the Living Edge space. Living Edge furniture and Bolon for TAG will stitch a Common Thread in a ‘choose your own adventure’-style installation.

31

MAFI with HASSELL and QUT STUDENTS have collaborated to produce an installation that is ever-evolving throughout the event. The space will combine repetition, balance and harmony to achieve a Common Thread of samples creating a visionary experience for the viewer. SPACE FURNITURE with BVN have interpreted The Project theme by immersing visitors into a weaver’s loom of vectors. These vectors run together, break apart, and run together again as they mark and define the path which the eye will follow and inadvertently lead the viewer on a tour through the levels of the showroom. ZENITH along with a group of various designers have collaborated to produce a large human-scaled concept puzzle called SPWY. This SPWY will challenge teams of three to see how quickly they can assemble the SPWY back into its star-shape. Join the Zenith team at the showroom for your chance to win a prize and remember how as kids we had to play together to achieve the impossible!
