IÉSEG’S TEACHING AND LEARNING STRATEGY: JOINTLY DEVELOPED BY STAKEHOLDERS

IÉSEG’s teaching and learning strategy is designed to enable faculty members, administrative staff, students, graduates and partner companies to work together. It is aligned with the School’s mission, which is structured around three pillars: • To educate managers to be inspiring, intercultural and ethical pioneers of change. • To create knowledge that nurtures innovative leaders. • To promote creative solutions for and with responsible organizations. IÉSEG’s objective is to train changemakers who will: • act as sources of knowledge; • have a strong managerial impact; • have a strong social impact. The learning experience is therefore focused on enabling students to acquire knowledge and knowhow, as well as personal development, in order to drive their skills.

The iéseg experience The learning experience at IÉSEG is intercultural by nature. Between the academic and administrative staff and the students, more than 100 nationalities are represented on the two campuses. The diversity of origins, personal backgrounds and professional experience creates an incredibly rich environment that is beneficial for everyone. The learning experience is based on four cornerstones, all of which are associated with a set of various instructional methods.

Cornerstone 1: Active learning

Objective: To foster student engagement and involvement in their learning through individual and group activities. ExampleS: • The development of flipped classrooms (in which students work on the theory outside lessons and focus on applications and exercises in class). • Courses jointly developed with students, as Dr Albane Tarnaud confirms: «A group of students has recently helped to transform a course that previously had mainly theoretical content. Together we reworked the structure of part of the course, as well as the content. The students’ involvement wasn’t limited to adding original illustrations or current examples. Their way of reorganizing the notions presented, their questions about certain concepts or their interest in certain subjects highlighted the parts of the course that needed to be presented differently. This co-creation experience led us to rethink the format of the course. All students now help to develop it by contributing the results of their research and reflections, which enables them to both better assimilate the economic theory presented and enrich the content of the course.»

7

Cornerstone 3: Interdisciplinary learning

Cornerstone 2: A personalized degree

Objective: To deliver personalized academic paths to students to enable them to gradually build their learning journey in line with their career plans and objectives. Example: The TALENT program. Testimonial by Chantal Dubin, head of the project: «There are three core components to this program: • Support for career plans throughout the student’s degree (both in groups and individually). • The involvement of specialized coaches, who all have ten years’ professional experience in business, including international professional experience, as well as a coaching certification. • The provision of tools that enable students to independently advance their plans.»

Objective: To enable students to connect and give meaning to the knowledge acquired during independent courses through multiple internships, non-profit projects and group projects. Students also benefit from crosscurricular courses and teaching that helps them develop useful skills in a variety of fields. Example: Teaching staff contribute to some of their colleagues’ courses to provide an alternative perspective from another discipline. Testimonial by Dr Christine Di Martinelly and Robert Joliet: «On the supply chain management course, the students work on an interdisciplinary example that connects the supply chain and finance. They have to assess the financial impact of investment decisions in the supply chain and choose between constructing a new warehouse, investing in a new production line or streamlining the supply chain. Two teams present their solutions to us, followed by a debriefing in which we focus on the financial and supply chain aspects of their decisions, as well as on how these two aspects are very strongly interrelated. These two different yet complementary approaches help students to understand the risks and opportunities that, in business, connect supply chain managers and financial managers.»

Cornerstone 4: Learning focused on skill acquisition

Objective: To continually increase the focus of learning to align it with business issues as closely as possible. Each program is reviewed by a panel of professionals working in the fields concerned to ensure the content is relevant to companies’ expectations. Example : Our students work on practical case studies, regularly meet professionals and learn through business games. They also directly work on real issues provided by companies. For example, this is the case with the Marketing Management course led by Dr. Véronique Pauwels-Delassus: «Everything was designed to enable our students to very quickly apply the theory to real marketing cases so that they can take it on board more effectively.» A company that gave students real issues to work on comments: « Some ideas were very creative while others were less creative but potentially profitable. This is a great way for students to study marketing, as professionals working in marketing have to pitch proposals to their manager. Therefore, it gives them the possibility to practice formulating a proposal, which should aim to be creative, but also profitable and feasible.”

The CETI, a center dedicated to innovative pedagogy To devise and implement the four cornerstones of its educational strategy, IÉSEG draws on the CETI (Center for Educational and Technological Innovation), a center dedicated to innovative education. The CETI team, which is devoted to pedagogical development and innovation, promotes a mix of methods and tools that faculty members can adapt to their own teaching. This ensures that students are exposed to a wide variety of educational approaches.

The mission of the CETI is structured around five points:

1

Contributing to enriching and improving student learning by gradually integrating new educational methods, practices and tools both in the classroom and online. For example, the CETI has helped the language faculty staff to introduce «flipped classroom» systems.

2 3

Delivering innovative learning solutions and resources developed with and for all faculty members.

4

Monitoring and detecting wider trends, and subsequently relaying these trends to faculty members, departmental heads, program directors, etc. This expertise is also showcased through external presentations (media, blogs, conferences, etc.).

5

Showcasing the expertise of the School and its faculty members. The learning solutions (content, training systems, etc.) created by the CETI in collaboration with the faculty members are specialized and stand out from those that are currently being used elsewhere. For example, IÉSEG has developed the first gamified MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) focusing on infrastructure finance.

Monitoring pedagogical developments: promoting and circulating practices and tools; training and coaching faculty members and administrative staff involved in teaching and learning; supporting changes brought about by the introduction of these solutions; taking a proactive approach in proposing student and faculty member assessment systems; conducting studies and research to assess the relevance of these systems, tools and actions.

Immersion in an international environment International exchange opportunities for iéseg students In the Grande École Program, every student undertakes at least one semester of academic exchange at an institution abroad in order to graduate, at the Bachelor and/or Master level, through Exchange and Double Degree Programs. IÉSEG also gives Bachelor in International Business students the opportunity to spend part of their course abroad from the second year.

Live in France, study in English Besides many international faculty members, the School welcomes an ever-growing number of international students who enrich the experience for all members of our community (either on exchanges or in the framework of different programs), creating a great interactive environment that brings people together from across the globe.

Going on an academic exchange has different objectives: • to familiarize students with different education & teaching methods and other ways of approaching management and business. • to enable them to become open to other mindsets and lifestyles. • to strengthen their intercultural skills by learning to communicate and work in another culture. www.ieseg.fr/en/international/study-abroad-for-iesegstudents

It is thus a key time for students to learn and grow as people, whether they are at school studying, or at home ready to get out and experience the wonders of France. Every IÉSEG student will join the international community of future managers at the School.

Spring and summer programs IÉSEG offers three short programs for students who are looking for a unique international academic and cultural experience in Paris. These programs are the: French Culture Spring Session (June); International Summer Academy and Fashion Summer Academy (July). www.ieseg.fr/en/programs/ spring-summer/

The Bachelor Cycle - 3 years The Bachelor cycle is structured around three core areas: • Fundamentals in Economics, Quantitative Methods, English and Law. • Management disciplines: Marketing, Negotiation, Audit & Control, Human Resource Management, Information Systems Management, Operations Management, Finance, Strategy. • Behavioral aptitudes and managerial skills, notably through personal development modules.
