PUBLISHER’S LETTER

ith Gary, Dermot, Louis, Tulisa, (plus newbie Nicole,) back on our screens, it’s fair to say we are all feeling the X Factor effect once again, so who better to feature on our cover this month than one of last year’s most talented contestants, singer and songwriter, Misha B. In 2011, Misha stole the show with her incredible vocals, drive, passion and vibrant wardrobe. This year she is back with her debut single, Home Run, and a forthcoming album. For our exclusive interview, we managed to steal ten minutes of the stylish star’s time, (she is currently preparing to tour with Nicki Minaj!) to learn more about Misha’s inspirations, what she has been up to over the past twelve months and what the future holds in store. Talking of superstars, last month saw the one and only Tinie Tempah arrive in Marbella for his exclusive performance at Aqwa Mist. When the all-new nightclub opened earlier this year, it promised to live up to its ‘superclub’ status, something we, (and Tinie,) believe it has fully achieved and rumour has it, a few other famous faces will be making an appearance at Aqwa Mist this year. As you know, at SOCIETY MARBELLA, we endeavor to bring you the biggest and best exclusives, and this month I don’t think you will be disappointed. As the EXCLUSIVE publication sponsor for Marbella Fashion Week, SOCIETY

MARBELLA was on hand to capture all the catwalk antics and backstage gossip at this exciting event. Turn to page 48 to indulge in The Skinny on Marbella Fashion Week. Marbella has always attracted the rich and famous, but this year the Costa del Sol was really catapulted into the spotlight. Celebrities flocked to the coast to experience all that Marbella has to offer. Recently famed hotspots, Aqwa Mist, Suite del Mar and Nikki Beach welcomed Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria, who was on the coast to raise money for her charity, The Eva Longoria Foundation, along with Amaury Nolasco of Prison Break, Terrence Howard from Iron Man, Jermaine Jackson and many more. Celebrity chef, Jamie Olivier, also made a visit to Marbella last month, heading to La Sala to sample their notable cuisine and of course SOCIETY MARBELLA was on hand to capture exclusive snaps of the star tucking into his gourmet feast. The Sala Group venues have welcomed so many celebrities this summer, it’s been almost hard to keep track, so we decided to treat you and ‘celeb-rate’ their A List visits; turn to page 74 to remind yourself of all the superstars who’ve hit our shores this year. Until next time… Andy Clark

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT

This month we turn the spotlight on X Factor star Misha B

Misha B By Laura-Jane Bruce

You know when you see someone on the television and you instantly recognise they are going to be a star? That was my consensus when I first laid eyes on Misha B. From her initial audition on X Factor last year, her charisma, panache and confidence exploded through the screen. After a few quiet months recovering from the madness, we caught up with the rising star and quizzed her on the show that shot her to stardom, her distinctive style and her impending debut album.

Hi Misha. Thank you very much for taking the time out of your hectic schedule to chat to us. How has your life been since leaving the X Factor? Crazy! Good crazy, but definitely crazy. It’s just been so busy, but really exciting, with the X Factor tour, working on my album and everything in-between. There’s lots of exciting ventures lined up for my future and I can’t wait! Are you still in touch with any of the contestants from the show? Of course, we all formed strong relationships through the show and the tour. Little Mix, Johnnie, Marcus Collins, we’re all still in touch a lot and are all really supportive of each other. I saw the Little Mix girls the other week actually. What do you think to the Nikki Minaj comparisons? I’m completely flattered! She’s an amazing artist and it can only be a positive thing to be compared to her right?! People are always going to make comparisons, so I’m flattered to be compared to such a phenomenon. Who’s on your iPod right now? LOADS! I’m currently listening to Maverick Sabre, Frank Ocean, Michael Jackson, Adele, Wiley, Angel, Jay and Kanye; him and JayZ are such an inspiration to me. Any other influences? I actually take inspiration from everybody, from MJ, Lauren Hill, Mary J, Beyonce, Jessie J, Missy Elliott – lots of different people!

18

We love your new single Home Run; what is the message behind it? It actually started out as quite a sad ballad about an ex. When in the studio with my producer MNEK, he made it fresh, funky and upbeat. It’s about being in love with someone and you find yourself doing things you’ve never done before. Now it’s positive – I wanna get people up on the dance floor! You co-wrote and produced the song; has that always been one of your passions? Yes, definitely! I’m always writing and

love to be involved with all aspects of making music. Describe your sound in three words. Free. Fresh. Fun. How would you describe your style? Free; I wear what I want, when I want to! I like to experiment with style, I might look at someone and think, that hat’s cool or those shoes are sick but I’ll take them and rock them my way! I hear 100 cups of tea were consumed whilst shooting your new video? How was it? The video shoot was amazing. I couldn’t believe I was on my own video shoot, it was kind of overwhelming too, but I loved every minute of it! And we did drink a lot of tea [laughs]. What can we expect from your debut album? And when can we get our hands on it? It won’t be what you expect! Every song is like a different chapter, a different story. I hope you like it! I’m still working on it, tweaking it. I want it to be absolutely spot on, a reflection of me; Misha B! How different is your life now from what it was 12 months ago? Very different. Busy! Exciting. Things are moving fast but I’m learning every day and loving every second! In the next 12 months, I hope to still be doing what I’m doing. I want to inspire worldwide. Life is what you make it!

Nº1

HOUSE AT THE END OF THE STREET

In hopes of a fresh start, recently divorced Sarah and her daughter Elissa discover their dream house in a suburban town, but when frightening incidents occur they realize it might not be as perfect as they thought. The mother and daughter soon learn the town’s deepest secret; years ago in the house next door, a daughter killed her parents in their beds and disappeared, leaving only her brother, Ryan. Against Sarah’s wishes, Elissa begins a relationship with Ryan and the closer the pair become, the deeper they are pulled into the houses’ dark past.

DREDD

Dredd is set in a violent futuristic city where criminals rule the chaotic streets and the only force of order lies with the urban cops called ‘judges’ who possess the combined powers of judge, jury and instant executioner. Known and feared throughout the city, Dredd is the ultimate judge, challenged with clearing the city of its latest curse; a dangerous drug epidemic that has users of ‘Slo-Mo’ experiencing reality at a fraction of its normal speed.

Nº3

Nº2 R.E.D BY NE-YO

American singer and songwriter Ne-Yo is releasing his fifth studio album, R.E.D, an acronym for Realizing Every Dream. His first album with new record label Universal Motown is a refreshing contrast to the poorly received Libra Scale and drafted from an array of personal experiences. “(it) came from me stepping outside myself, looking at my life as it is today and realizing that every dream I’ve had from the day I decided I wanted to do music, every dream that I’ve had from then until now, I’m definitely on the way to realizing it,” explained the talented star. R.E.D combines elements of pop, R&B and dance-pop music and features collaborators, Harmony Samuels, No I.D. and The Underdogs.

Nº5

FAMILY GUY – BACK TO THE MULTIVERSE FOR PS3

Nº4

The Griffin’s family and friends from Quahog are coming to gaming consoles this fall in a Family Guy video game. Family Guy: Back to the Multiverse utilizes the talented voice cast and writers, authentic humour and subversive spirit of the series and will offer gamers an interactive Family Guy experience. The game features a completely original story that sends the characters back through the Multiverse on a mission to stop Bertram. The game also features extra challenge levels, multiplayer maps and alternative costumes.

BATTLE BORN BY THE KILLERS

Stuart Price, Steve Lillywhite, Damian Taylor and Brendan O’Brien all collaborated on The Killers latest release, Battle Born, the Las Vegas band’s first album in four years. Songs ‘Heart Of A Girl’, ‘Flesh And Bone’ and ‘Carry Me Home’ will all appear following the pre-released ‘Runaways’. Singer Brandon Flowers explained the title of the album, which is also the name of the band’s studio and a nickname for their home state of Nevada, saying: “In a sense, all Americans are battle born. Our ancestors came here for something better.” Drummer Ronnie Vanucci added, “It’s living up to its title. This is our difficult fourth record.”

STOLEN

TOP TEN

Director Simon West and Nicolas Cage reunite for the first time since Con Air for Stolen, a fast paced action thriller set during Mardi Gras in New Orleans. Will Montgomery is a master thief who, after being double-crossed in a raid gone wrong, is sent to prison for eight years. Upon his release, he’s ready to leave his criminal past behind and try to rebuild a relationship with his estranged daughter Allison. However, The FBI and his old associates believe that he hid the cash from the last theft before his sentence. To get his hands on it, his old partner Vincent captures Allison and demands the entire $10 million as ransom. Keeping her in the soundproofed trunk of a taxi, Vincent is able to stay mobile amongst the swarms of taxis making him nearly impossible to find. Much to the disbelief of the FBI and Vincent, Will doesn’t actually have the money and instead, he must trust his instincts and his old partner in crime, the beautiful, sexy and smart Riley, to do one more clever heist to get his daughter back alive before it’s too late.

Nº6

Nº7 DISNEY PRINCESS: MY FAIRY TALE ADVENTURE FOR WII

Nº9

Nº8 LOOPER

In the futuristic action thriller Looper, time travel is invented, but illegal and only available on the black market. In 2072, when the mob wants to get rid of someone, the target is sent 30 years into the past, where a hired gun or ‘Looper’, like Joe, is waiting to mop it up. Loopers kill and dispose of agents sent by their employers from corporate headquarters in Shanghai and are paid on the terms that all targets must never escape. When Simmons recognizes his target as a future version of himself, his older self escapes after incapacitating him. The resulting failure of his job causes his employers to come after him, forcing him to fight for his life as he hunts for his older self.

END OF WATCH

Academy Award nominee Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena star in End of Watch as young police officers patrolling the toughest streets of central Los Angeles. The partners find their friendship tested after confiscating a small hoard of money and firearms from a notorious gang during a routine traffic stop. Giving the story a gripping, first-person immediacy, the action unfolds entirely through footage from the handheld HD cameras of the police officers, gang members, surveillance cameras, and citizens caught in the line of fire to create a riveting portrait of the city’s darkest, most violent corners, the cops who risk their lives there every day, and the price they and their families are forced to pay.

This month will be an enchanted one for young gamers, thanks to Disney Princess: My Fairytale Adventure. The game enables little ones to take on the role of an apprentice to the Fairy Godmother, who happens to have a little accident. That accident turns the good sprites of the Magical Kingdom into wicked imps that travel from world to world, wreaking their own brand of havoc. Kids can visit several different Disney locations from their favourite Disney movies including Cinderella, The Princess and the Frog and The Little Mermaid and interact with countless Disney characters in their quest to set things right.

HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA

At Dracula’s five-star resort Hotel Transylvania, monsters and their families, including Frankenstein and his bride, the Mummy, the Invisible Man, and a family of werewolves, can live it up without worrying about frightening or offending anyone in the human world. Dracula, an overprotective dad, has a teenage daughter Mavis and makes up stories about terrible dangers in order to keep her from wanting to leave the hotel. But it looks like his world may come crashing down when an ordinary guy, who just happens to walk into the hotel, falls head of heels for her.

After the embarrassment of being fired from X Factor USA, one might think Cheryl Cole would be keeping clear of the UK’s version of the reality TV show. However the Call My Name singer showed there were no hard feelings when she appeared on Daybreak. ‘Yes (I’m still a fan)...’If I’m here I will absolutely be watching,’ the pint sized pop star announced. Any chance of a guest appearance Cheryl?

He is officially the greatest Olympian of all time and now he can add high fashion model to his impressive C.V. Michael Phelps, the American swimmer has been revealed as the face, (and body!) of fashion brand, Louis Vuitton. The advert features the star relaxing in what can only be described as the fanciest bath of all time, in the smallest swimming trunks we have ever seen! Adjacent to the bath lies Louis’ signature leather duffle bag, apparently the Olympian carries his goggles and towel to the pool in this fancy tote. Well, I guess when you have won 22 Olympic medals you can afford to be a little extravagant.

Oh what a name connection can do for you! Katrina Darling recently learnt the news that she is the Duchess of Cambridge’s cousin. “It was the most ridiculous thing I ever heard. It’s not every day something like that happens,” explained the 22-year-old beauty. The brunette performs burlesque in a show entitled ‘God Save the Queen’ in the UK and the United States. However, her newfound fame recently assisted her in scoring the front cover of September’s issue of Playboy. I wonder how Queen Elizabeth would feel about the provocative cover, let alone the eight page nude pictorial inside!

They say all press is good press, but for Kristin Stewart this may not be the case! Her affair with 41-year-old director David Koepp has not only lost her an abundance of Twilight fans, but looks like it has also lost her a movie role. Koepp had already begun working on a sequel to the blockbuster Snow White and the Huntsman, however once the news of the affair went public, SOCIETY MARBELLA learnt the news that a solo project focused around The Huntsman starring Chris Hemsworth looks like it is set to go ahead instead! Karma Kristin?!

It appears Kanye West has taken the next step in proclaiming his love for new girlfriend, Kim Kardashian, by featuring her in his new video for single I Wish You Would/ Cold. Although it seems the rapper had another motive for featuring the beautiful star, “I’ll admit I fell in love with Kim right around the same time she fell in love with him. Well, that’s cool, baby girl, do your thing/Lucky I ain’t have Jay drop him from the team,” raps Kanye. If that isn’t a dig at Kim’s ex Kris Humphries then we don’t know what is! the devastating news that he and his wife Dawn had lost their baby girl Poppy. Last month, the X Factor head judge spoke out for the first time since the baby was delivered stillborn. Taking to Twitter, Gary wrote, “Your kind words and lovely messages are overwhelming. Thank you.” The singer’s celebrity friends took the opportunity to show their support for the star, “My thoughts are with Gary, Dawn and family now,” tweeted band member Robbie Williams who is expecting his first child with wife Ayda Field. Composer Andrew Lloyd-Webber who worked with Gary Barlow to compose the official diamond jubilee song also expressed his condolences via the social media site, “Dearest Dawn and Gary, Madeleine and I are devastated about the news of Poppy. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.” Whilst Fellow X-Factor judge Tulisa Contostavlos wrote, “My thoughts and prayers are with @GbarlowOfficial and his wife Dawn tonight. You got away with it this long, why bring it up now?! The Expendables 2 actor,

Jean-Claude Van Damme,

recently revealed he enjoyed an affair with none other than Kylie Minogue. The lovers hooked-up whilst Van Damme was still married to Darcy LaPier, back in 1994, during the filming of Street Fighter, “OK. Yes, yes, yes. It happened. I was in Thailand, we had an affair,” the actor told The Guardian. When pushed for more information, Jean-Claude revealed, “I tell you what, you should ask her, she’ll have a better memory. I’m 51-years-old, do you know how much I was punched in the face on The Expendables? No, no. No. And let’s just say it happened, so what? Who wants to know?...Sweet kiss, beautiful lovemaking, it would be abnormal not to have had an affair, she’s so beautiful and she was there in front of me every day with a beautiful smile, simpatico, so charming, she wasn’t acting like a big star. I knew Thailand very well, so I showed her my Thailand. She’s a great lady.” I wonder how Miss Minogue feels about the big reveal, or better yet Darcy?! We have waited in anticipation for

Jennifer Aniston

and Brad Pitt to walk down the aisle with their new respective partners and it looks like 2012 may be the year all our wishes come true! Last month, Aniston’s representative confirmed the news that the star is engaged to her to partner of just over a year Justin Theroux, whom she began dating whilst working on the set of the movie Wanderlust. The announcement is great news for all Jennifer’s fans after her rocky romances with Vince Vaughn and John Mayer. Her ex Brad Pitt got engaged to Angelina Jolie, with whom he has six children, in April and is rumoured to be tying the knot this month in France. Let’s hope it’s a happyever-after for everyone! The Heart of T

he economic hub and one of the most exciting cities in Africa, Johannesburg has skilfully managed to dust off its violent, crime driven reputation and transform itself into a safer, cleaner, cosmopolitan destination worth visiting. This city, built on a gold reef, is now home to supersized shopping centres, an electric nightlife and a flourishing art scene. Despite its new found popularity, Johannesburg can be daunting for travellers. Some fall into the trap of being too intimidated by the city’s size and reputation to explore, venturing only to the northern suburbs. However, once you have discovered a suit-

able method of transport, most likely by car or within the company of a tour, the history, diversity and vibrant energy of the city can quickly become captivating.

Disturbing but hugely informative, the Apartheid museum is a fantastic place to begin your tour of Johannesburg; this powerful

series of exhibits and multimedia presentations document the city’s history. Visitors begin by receiving a ‘white’ or ‘non-white’ pass, whilst inside apartheid’s brutality is expressed with unusual force. Why not continue on your historic adventure with

a tour of the urban region, Soweto, taking in Soccer City, Africa’s biggest stadium where Spain defeated third time finalists The Netherlands at the FIFA World Cup in 2010. Sport is huge throughout the whole of South Africa, but in Johannesburg it is colossal; big teams, bigger support and even bigger stadiums. The most popular sport is soccer, or football to us, and there is fantastic rivalry between the city’s two main squads. It’s definitely worth visiting a game, tickets are cheap and the football is exciting; ultimately the ambiance is exhilarating and the fantastic weather is an added bonus.

Shopping is another of Johannesburg’s greatest addictions; for serious retail therapy, start in Rosebank Mall, home to the biggest designer names. Here, the magic of Africa is fused with the elegance of Europe, creating a mecca boasting 120 stylish stores as well as an array of upmarket restaurants, contemporary coffee houses, a multi-screen cinema and a daily African craft market selling creative artwork to the sound of bongo drums. In Soweto, the Maponya Mall is another must; a trendy hub for the Johannesburg youth. It’s not only the mega malls where you can enjoy spending your money, vendors selling everything from food, umbrellas, footballs and phone accessories pitch themselves at traffic lights along the main roads, hoping to pick up business from passers-by. In addition, barber shops consisting of just a single chair, can also be found road side. Another sight to see is Oriental Plaza, close to Newtown, filled with an abundance

of Indian owned stores selling everything from spices to cookware. Here you will also find plenty of stalls selling samosas and all things sweet, guaranteed to satisfy your shopping-fuelled appetite. If you are seeking a restaurant experience, try Gramadoelas, which boasts the Queen as one of its former customers. If you are feeling adventurous, order the fried Mopani worms or for the more reserved, the sosaties (spicy kebabs) may be more appealing. Moya, another of Newtown’s gems, situated in the downtown cultural district is a high end African restaurant specialising in cuisine from across the country. Johannes-

burg boasts a great collection of diverse eateries; 7th Street in Melville

is full of trendy hot spots with the Melville Grill taking the number one slot for steaks. Wombles in Parktown is another favourite of meat lovers, providing giant oversized slabs of beef in a hunting lodge atmosphere.

When it comes to resting your head for the night; Melrose Arch, a chic boutique hotel where the young and beautiful swarm, a poolside bar set in ankle-deep water accentuated by hip decor keeps this hotel a step above the rest. If views are an important factor for you, Italianate guesthouse A Room With A View, high above Melville’s dining and clubbing center boasts 40-mile views from the balconies and the highest quality audiovisual equipment. If you are looking for something more grandiose, the Hyatt Regency is a world-class hotel for the discerning traveller. Situated in Rosebank, it is every shopper’s paradise, the hotel features The Peak Health Club, an ideal place to relax and rejuvenate, or head to the rooftop pool for a refreshing dip. The Westcliff is the ultimate resort for classic luxury and has rapidly become one of Johannesburg’s most distinguished hotels, combining elegant opulence, excellent business facilities and breath-taking surroundings. Despite being located in the city centre, the hotel has an almost rural air due to its location on a Cliffside amidst a garden estate. The swimming pool and balconies overlook the neighbouring zoological gardens, where animals can be spotted between the trees. This distinctive combination offers guests the opportunity for peace and quiet whilst still being in close proximity to all that the big city has to offer. Don’t let this remarkable city’s darker past frighten you off; take the leap and enjoy the history, culture and new self-confidence that Johannesburg has to offer.

THE LONG AND SHORT OF IT

W

ith Helen’s teeth and body surgery now complete, it was time to turn our attention to her hair. So we took a trip to Advanced Hair Studio in Puerto Banus for a consultation for them to take a closer look at her hair and decide the best way to approach it. Sitting down with Dan Waring, manager of the hair emporium, Helen was asked a series of questions to find out her past hair experiences.

Helen describes her hair as “very straight and quite boring, each year, I have a fringe cut in, grow it out, and then have it put back in again; that’s the extent of my hair journey throughout my life. I’ve never been brave enough to experiment with a daring colour, so always had my hair highlighted.” It came to light that Helen has had hair extensions in the past. She has always had very fine wispy hair, especially on the

sides, and wanted to combat this with thickening extensions. She had about 300 single links that were glued in, which is different to how Advanced Hair Studio operates. “Wow, that’s a lot of extensions, we suggest using between 150 to 200 maximum as they can become very heavy on your head,” explained Dan. Helen agreed “that was the main reason as to why I only had them in for about a year in total. They became very hard to manage, so I would often just end up tying my hair up, so in the end I had them taken out.”

29

“I’ve always dreamt of having thick, glossy, glamourous hair at a mid to long length like you see on all the celebrities on television. I’m at the age where I can’t have my hair too long now, so bra-strap length would be perfect. Regarding the style, I’m not too bothered about it, just as long as it has body and movement, so you can pretty much have free reign with that.”

Dan noted this as a perfect ideal for Helen because you must continually keep in mind not to cause any strain to her existing hair so she can keep the extensions in for as long as she chooses. Charlie, the head stylist, then examined Helen’s hair closely to determine what colour would be best

The extensions used at Advanced Hair Studio are different to glued ones; they use a system that involves what’s called a Flashpoint, exclusive to the hair studio. One of the world’s most sophisticated hair extension procedures, it used no glues, waxes or weaving, instead a single link is attached to the root of a strand of your own hair and is locked into place. Then after six to eight weeks, Helen will return for a ‘refusion’, a process of relocating the extension to its original position, as it moves as your own hair grows. Here, the link is unlocked, the extension is moved

30

up and a new link is locked into place. Along with the hair being reusable (a vital cost saving element), it is also kinder to your own hair as no form of heat treatment is used that could potentially cause damage to your hair, which is perfect in Helen’s case because hers is so fine. The Flashpoints hair extensions are so natural looking; nobody will be able to tell the difference. Advanced Hair Studio always work on the basis of attaching the extensions no higher than the occipital bone and trying not to go beyond the tip of the ears to ensure the links aren’t exposed. Dan then asked Helen what she would like to achieve from having the extensions.

Currently, her hair is a very yellow blonde, so Charlie will tone it down using low lights, but still in keeping with Helen’s vision by using a range of different coloured blonde shades. Here, her hair will stay

for her.

more natural looking, which is Helen’s main aim.

After Helen has had her facial surgery, which we will bring you in next month’s issue, Helen will return to Advanced Hair Studio to have her hair extensions put in. Only a few more months left until we will reveal the new Helen! Excited anyone?! advancedhairstudio.es

Tanning expert James Read has worked with everyone from Lady Gaga to Mariah and has sprayed stars for events such as the Oscars, the Grammys and the Brits. Here are his top tips for achieving the perfect at home tan.

THE ART OF TANNING TECHNIQUES AT HOME: When applying your tan, map out your body in stages so you don’t miss bits, start from the face and work down your body, leaving your hands and feet till last. The Layering - Layer your tan up in fine layers, this will make your tan last longer and also fade more evenly. You want to treat your application like a real tan which naturally builds up, it does not go straight to a dark colour. With fake tan it’s your choice how dark you want to be. Mitt Application - For the perfect application apply your liquid tan, mousse, lotion and gradual tan using a mitt. Glide the mitt down your skin, do not over rub otherwise your tan will be uneven. The Flicker - This is similar to the layering technique but is finer and will stop full down onto the feet. Spray on your body using flickering motions, making half circles on your body. By Hand - Applying your tan by hand can sometimes be the best way to apply self tan as it allows you to really work the product into your skin but make sure you wash it off after application and then tan the outer parts of your hands by rubbing them together. Latex Gloves - Make sure when you are using Latex gloves that you don’t over rub the product and also apply with your palms and fingers together. If your hands are all over the place this will cause streaks on your skin.

THE TELL TALE MISTAKES Sprays * Make sure you cover your feet with a towel otherwise the full down onto your feet will over tan them, not a good look! * Don’t spray to close to your body and make sure it’s at the same distance; this will stop your tan being uneven. * Some tans can leak around the nozzle, wash your hands after just in case; you don’t want a smoker’s finger.

36

Mousse/Lotion/Liquid/Gel * When using these products go down in a sweeping motion, making sure you are not over rubbing as this will cause your tan to be too dark. * After applying a lotion tan, leave it to dry for 45 minutes and then using a cotton mitt or flannel buff over your body, this will help achieve a more natural and even looking tan. The Hands * Always apply the tan to your hands last. * When applying product, do not apply directly onto your hands, work the product down from your arms, you want to just use the excess as a natural fade down. * Make sure your palms are cleaned with a wipe after tanning, this will ensure the area you are tanning looks natural. * If you have applied self tan to your hands, rub a small amount of moisturiser on the sides of the hands, remember these areas don’t tan in the real sun, you want your tan to look real, also don’t forget to rub moisturiser in between your fingers. The Feet * Work your product directly from your legs onto your feet and ankles; don’t apply directly onto the feet. * Rub moisturiser in between the toes and a small amount at the sides of the feet, then using a mitt, buff around the feet and ankles to make sure your tan is even. The Hairline * When applying self tan remember to rub mosturiser into your hair line after the product is applied, this will stop you getting the tell-tale self tan line.

The Face * When applying self tan to your face, apply a small amount of moisturiser first, this will ensure your tan looks natural. * Your face is one of the first places your tan will fade, mix a small amount of self tan in with your moisturiser and apply to your face; this will lift your tan on your face and ensure it matches the rest of your body. * Before applying self tan to your face rub your face with an ice cube to seal your pores, then apply your tan. The Body * After you have washed your tan off it’s really important to keep your skin hydrated, this will make your tan last longer and fade more evenly. After three days exfoliate your body, to ensure your tan fades evenly and prepare your skin for the next application, your skin should be fresh before you re-apply. The Back * The back is one of the hardest places to get right as it’s hard to do yourself. Apply the product onto some cling film and then rub over your back. Alternatively you can opt for a 360 degree angle spray, this will allow you to get to the hard to reach areas or why not get your partner involved? The Wrists * After you have applied your tan, use a wipe and clean around the wrist area, then rub a small amount of moisturiser on each wrist and then buff with a mitt, this will give you a natural fade down. Showering * It’s recommended to leave your tan on for 8 -12 hours but for the best results, sleep with your tan on. If you only require a light glow, wash off after 4 - 5 hours. thetantalist.com

alking through the doors of the newly opened salon, you are welcomed into a modern, sleek environment located over two floors, which perfectly blends functionality and aesthetic. “We wanted to create a New York loftstyle space with an industrial-but-glamorous atmosphere,” explains Italian artistic manager Dom Pastoressa. “There was no expense spared, as director, Ryan Mille, and I believe if you are going to do something right, it needs to be perfect from the start. Clients will make a judgement about you and your salon from their first glimpse of the shop front and those impressions will be added to when they actually enter the salon. We wanted the salon to be elegantly designed and luxuriously furnished to create an inviting and relaxing haven, free from the stresses of modern living, allowing our clientele to simply sit back and enjoy our professional services. We needed the salon to make an impact, ensuring passing trade stopped and took notice, and I think we have achieved this.” White washed wooden floors contrast with the contemporary chrome accessories, while the dove grey brick effect feature wall adds the wow factor. Special touches include the white futuristic chairs, huge flat screens showcasing the latest fashion shows and directional lighting above the backs of the chairs offers a natural working

light for stylists. To break up the stark colour scheme, they have cleverly covered an entire wall with a sensual image of a retro brunette model. What makes this photo even more impressive is the fact that Dom was actually the hair stylist on that particular shoot. “I want my clients to feel as though they are walking into my home. We even have a designated area where they can simply enjoy a coffee and watch TV. My

clients do not need to come to the salon just for a haircut, I want

them to feel they are welcome to drop in simply for a chat.” With a multitude of cutting edge hair and beauty services using quality professional products at reasonable prices, you really can afford to ‘bespoke’ your treatments.

How about a Californian effect colour followed by a Bio Reconstruction hair treatment for dry hair, finished off with a Shellac nail session. Maybe Balayage highlights are more your thing with an Essential Nutrition hair treatment and then a foot massage. It’s like a kid being let loose in a sweetie shop with all the different options. Once thing is for sure, Dom Pastoressa is all about supreme quality; quality furnishings, quality treatments and of course a quality experience. Madonna’s Secret Beauty Weapon is finally revealed.

A hectic lifestyle, a MDNA global tour underway and the pressures of being one of the most famous women on the planet is enough to play havoc on anyone’s skin – nope, not for Madonna. Even at 54 she has the skin of someone half her age. What’s her secret? Intraceuticals Oxygen Therapy! Yes, the cat was let out the bag when Madonna assistant was spotted carrying a Intraceuticals Oxygen Therapy machine out of the Ritz Hotel in Paris, inadvertently revealing the superstar’s latest weapon in her anti-aging arsenal.

So what does it do?

Intraceuticals Oxygen Therapy is more than just a facial; the combination of oxygen pressure and a special form of hyaluronic acid creates a visible result you can instantly see and feel. Additionally, the application of pressurized oxygen increases the absorption of the infusion, which helps the skin retain hydration and moisture. Once hydration is balanced your skin will look and feel

healthier and more vital - additionally many other common skin complaints will naturally disappear. I personally love this treatment. I had my first facial with the talented therapist Jane Harling at Cosmoclinic & Isabelle’s aesthetic and beauty salon back in October. Although the results were immediate, it was actually three days later when I really began to see a difference. Basically, I do not look good pale, I never have and resort to either fake tan or a ton of make up to make myself look slightly presentable to the general public. However 72 hours after the treatment, my anemic white skin looked flawless. I have never in my life been able to leave the house without concealer on, so this was a miracle in itself. Even my other half noticed and said I actually suited being pale, errrr no, it’s the oxygen treatment darling. Yes, you guessed it when the results wore off a few weeks later, I was back slapping on the foundation again. Thankfully if you opt for a course of 6 treatments one week apart the results are much longer lasting.

It’s not just me that thinks this treatment is out of this world. These machines were regularly used on the set of Desperate Housewives and Sex and the City. Uma Thurman and Renée Zellweger are just a few names who won’t get on a red carpet without them. Well, if it’s good enough for them… Cosmoclinic & Isabelle’s aesthetic and beauty salon Tel. +34 952 81 59 44

With over 170 Jessica nail polishes, including the latest collection, I drive Laura insane chopping and changing between my colour choice. I am totally LOVING the neon shades at the moment! BEAUTY as NATURE

intended By Nicola McGeorge

ENN Care offers a natural, organic skincare line that is is gentle yet very effective on the skin. Regular readers will know that I am a huge fan of organic and natural beauty products. I am always on the lookout for the next big thing and am constantly reviewing new skin care lines enabling me to recommend my latest finds to you. A few months ago I was introduced to a new range by Elsebeth Nybroe-Nielsen of ENN Care. She has spent years searching worldwide for a cosmetic line, which not only complimented her ‘Natural Facelift’ treatment, but was also 1OO% natural, fresh and organic.

“I had been looking for ‘healthy’ cosmetics products to use on myself for such a long time,” she explained. “However, all I found were products containing chemicals even if they claimed to be natural and organic. When I came across this product range I just fell in love. Natural, chemical free, organic, effective and reasonably priced, what is not to like?” Elsebeth’s range contains no chemical additives and relies whole-heartedly on nature. These fresh vital products, whose formulas are derived from modern, scientific discoveries combined with ayurvedic philosophies, TCM (traditional Chinese medicine) and TEM (traditional European medicine,) allow the skin to breathe again. Elsebeth recommended that I started off with the Trial Set - Skin type 2, which contains a cleansing milk, facial toner, hydroserum and cream concentrate. The first thing I noticed when using the trial set was the smell, it was like walking through a meadow. As much as beauty companies try to disguise it with perfumes, you can always detect a faint chemical scent. However,

this was simply nature in a bottle. Elsebeth did warn me that while my skin detoxed due to using such natural products I might have a few break outs but thankfully not even a single blemish appeared. My skin simply loved the products and drank it in. Within a week it had plumped up, the tone had evened out and after adding the eye serum the dark shadows under my eyes had started to fade. With such great results, I was eager to start Elsebeth’s food supplements, which are made entirely from power foods. These contain concentrated blends of medicinal plants that are designed to act on specific health aspects. My favourite was the Antiox pack, which boosted my energy levels immensely. The natural active agents in PACK antiox promote well-being, capacity, and defensive forces. If you would like to try these amazing products you can make an appointment with Elsebeth for a facial alone or in conjunction with the facelift treatments. Tel. (+34) 663 048 477 enncare.com

IN THE SPOTLIGHT in my own beauty clinic located in Nueva Andalucia. Society Marbella interviews Susan Van Zantvliet, owner of Imperia Beauty Marbella. I am originally from… the Netherlands. I decided to relocate to Spain as it offered a better quality of life for my two young children and so far it’s been a great move. I speak fluent Dutch and English and am comfortable with German, French and Spanish. I have always been interested in… fashion and beauty. When I turned 20 I decided to explore my talents in this sector and specialize in permanent make-up and fillers. Luckily I naturally have an impressive artistic eye and a steady hand. I have been trained by the best in the industry and have the qualifications and expertise to show for it. I work in… several different salons between Alhaurin del Grande, Marbella, San Pedro and Estepona. Just pick the nearest one to you and call myself or my PA to book yourself in. Free consultations will be held

42

Clients can expect… to look fabulous after their first treatment with me. I am honest with my opinions and advice, which I think is very important when choosing a technician. I always opt for top quality products, a must when working with the facial area. It gives me great pride to… restore people’s confidence. After every treatment, I get to watch my clients’ faces light up when I hand them the mirror. To hear them say that they feel like a whole new person, well, you just can’t beat that incredible feeling. I am very excited about… my new treatment Skin Vitamin Micro Injections. Mesotherpy is the treatment of ageing skin and aims to replace minerals, vitamins and amino acids that are found in lower levels of the skin, which lessen as we age. It involves the injection of a specially prepared mixture of medications, placed just under the skin into the problematic area. I am loving… my ‘Shadow Brow’ service. If you want stunning shape and definition for your brows, and if you can’t stand to see

your eyebrow tint fade after a few days, then this could be the answer. Permanent cosmetics can seem like a big step, but the new “Shadow Brow” treatment is a fantastic way of trying it out. Instead of lasting up to a few years, (like regular permanent cosmetics,) the ‘Shadow Brow’ lasts around 2-4 weeks. It’s a great way of giving permanent cosmetics a try, plus it is also a cheaper alternative. I’m currently working on… my own mineral make up brand and eyelashes, which I am hoping, will be ready early next year. For more information: Tel. + 34 952 883 450/+34 675 107 035

LÍNEA DIRECTA ADVISES YOU

HOW TO ACT IN CASE OF AN ACCIDENT Línea Directa Insurance advises you of the steps to follow in case of a road accident in Spain.

Call the emergency number: 112. They will co-ordinate the procedure and will ask you in detail about the circumstances of the accident.

Remain calm at all times. Switch on the emergency lights and if the state of the vehicle permits, remove the vehicle from the road, in order to avoid delays and further accidents, to the extent possible.

Signal the accident location. Before stepping out of the car, put on your high-visibility jacket, which is compulsory, and place the emergency triangles correctly. The first must be placed about 50 metres behind the car in the direction of the traffic, and the second about 100m.

If someone is seriously injured, never try to move them, except if in danger of fire or imminent explosion. Cover the injured person, keep them calm and wait for the emergency services to arrive. If the circumstances of the location allow, always fill in the European accident report, which is an essential document for speeding up the procedures and handling between the insurance companies. If you have any doubt about how to do this, don’t hesitate to call your insurance company.

THE SKINNY ON MARBELLA Fashion Week By Christie Holland Images courtesy of celebritiesinmarbella.com

L

iving in Marbella, we have become accustomed to attending an array of luxury events; nightclub openings, restaurant launches and celebrity appearances take place on a weekly basis and almost become the norm, so it takes something really special to catch my attention… enter Marbella Fashion Week. Marbella Fashion Week is the brainchild of Adam Ryan, the founder of what is considered its UK equivalent, Essex Fashion Week. “Marbella has become a popular holiday hotspot for the Essex county and they both now share a platform where they can celebrate fashion,” Adam explained. Marbella Fashion Week was born in order to combine innovative collections, visionary international designers and the greatest sense of fashion community spirit amongst local and international guests. On arrival at Nikki Beach, the location for the main event during the week, we were welcomed by a Champagne reception complete with diet chocolate cupcakes! We made our way to our seats just in time for the introduction by Adam himself who introduced the first designer of the evening, ClaireaBella. This youthful label was born in 2012 when founder Claire Barrett began painting beautiful caricatures on jute bags for family and friends to raise some additional money for a family holiday; little did she know her hobby would turn into a worldwide phenomenon. Now two years on, the company boasts a TV campaign and a host of celebrity fans including

48

Kerry Katona, Russell Kane, Ellen Rivers, Nicola McLean and the cast of The Only Way is Essex. Claire took to the stage following her collection, which boasted diamante covered versions of her classics, and informed the crowd that the entire female cast, including Nanny Pat, all own a ClaireaBella classic; she even went on to announce Joey Essex and some of the male cast are fans and own their own personalised bag! Following ClaireaBella’s sparkly presentation, Maya Peters’ array of jewelled beachwear took to the stage. Sun-kissed models dressed in flowing, diamante encrusted long kaftans sashayed down the runway to the sounds of the recognizable Sintillate soundtrack, one of the official sponsors for the event. Other sponsors included Tresor Paris, Sira Concepts, Talk Radio Europe, Gibraltar Tourist Board, Miss Penquin PR and of course, SOCIETY MARBELLA; the team from Lavish provided the hair and makeup for the evening, transforming all the models into catwalk beauties. Based in London, one of the fashion capitals of the world, Maya Peters’ luxury summer wear is inspired by worldwide influences and trends. The international brand offers ‘one-off,’ couture pieces such as hand sewn bikini designs crafted from India’s finest fabrics, sparkling Maharani Kaftans and statement jewellery. After this abundance of bikini-clad models, I welcomed some male eye candy. This came in the form of Judas Sinned’s collection, a fresh and exciting new addition to the men’s fashion market. The models showcased autumn’s array of t-shirts, shirts, polo shirts and vests offering a touch of much-needed attitude to men’s wardrobes. Following the male runway show, a short interval ensued and we were introduced to Britain’s

CHIC HAPPENS

Got Talent finalist, Pippa Langhorne, the international soprano. Being a massive Britain’s Got Talent fan, this immediately caught my attention, although I was exceptionally disappointed in myself that I couldn’t recall her performance, that was until my friend pointed out that this was in fact ‘Pip and Puppy’, the talented operatic singer who sang with her pooch! Well I have to say, I was slightly disenchanted that she didn’t bring her dog with her, but her voice made up for it and she blew me away with her array of classical and contemporary tunes; most noticeably, her up-tempo version of Snow Patrol’s Chasing Cars was out of this world. Following the outstanding interval, our attention returned to the catwalk show and Carrie Roslyn’s collection poured out before us. Vibrant, colourful and vivacious, it was impossible to take your eyes of the body-con mini dresses; I predict it won’t be long until these impressive frocks are covering an assortment of bodies in Puerto Banus. The animated colour palate continued into the following designers collection, The Only Way is Bikinis. Originally inspired by the infamous flower bikinis worn on TOWIE, The Only Way is Bikinis creates beautiful handcrafted bikinis, tankinis and monokins using a variety of flowers, feathers, Swarovski crystals, fringing and lace. As the models made their way along the runway, I could already predict these creations would be a favourite at Sala Beach’s Love Juice parties and Nikki Beach’s

Amazing Sundays. Fringing, in particular, appeared to be a front running trend with each ensemble appearing more elaborate than the last. Gorgeous Boutique, followed by Dorcas Hammond, closed the show; the former, a leading online retailer specialises in premium fashions at high street prices enabling every girl to look and feel like a celebrity, without a celebrity budget. Their clothing is worn and loved by the cast of TOWIE and was equally lapped up by the captivated crowd. In addition to offering an online collection, Gorgeous Boutique also customize swimwear and clothing, and crystalize shoes for the ultimate personalized experience. The prestigious ‘Gold Needle,’ awardwinning designer Dorcas Hammond was our final fashion treat for the evening. Clients worldwide adore her desirable evening and daywear, and her autumn collection did not disappoint. Selected by 2009’s Miss Gibraltar, Kaiane Aldorino, who went on to secure the title of Miss World, Dorcas Hammond’s vibrant, sexy dresses are made for the modern woman who exudes sass and sensuality. As the final model graced the catwalk, an uproar of applause emerged from the crowd and I could sense everyone was as impressed as I was with this highly anticipated event. As Adam returned to the stage to thank everyone involved and encourage all to make their way to the after party, he finished with his signature phrase; a new fashion story has began, and in this case, it truly has.

Society’s dedicated follower of fashion, Giles Brown recalls some of his more interesting fashion choices

YOU’RE NOT GOING OUT

I

blame it on the 80s. My formative

fashion years were spent in a decade that saw rolled up jackets worn over T-shirts and shoulder pads that you could land a small Lear Jet on. Ever since that decade, I’ve struggled manfully through the world of fashion, but in the wake of last month’s Marbella Fashion Week, I thought that I’d share some of my more, ermmm, ‘interesting’ fashion faux pas over the years with you. I grew up in the 70s, which meant that most of the early childhood photos have me sporting a rather fetching lumberjack, Starsky and Hutch T-shirt and flared jeans combination and my hair shoulder length. It’s a look that I came back to recently, but without the hair (of which more later). My teenage years in the Midlands saw me go down the traditional art-dramaEnglish student route and get into a Goth-Heavy Rock phase. The Cult, The Cure and Killing Joke were all big influences and I spent the ages of 13 to 17 happily moping about the drizzle filled Staffordshire countryside in a succession of long trench coats, black waistcoats, baggy black trousers, heavy felt boots and Victorian brooches, generally looking miserable. (listening to non-stop Cure albums will do that to an impressionable teen, trust me). And then something terrible happened... We moved from the Potteries to Puerto Banus. My first meeting with new friends was a culture shock that took months to recover from. Most of them wore surf -shirts and ripped jeans, all had tans and looked healthy. My Goth gear made

me stick out like a Zombie in a Zumba class, a fact that was con-

firmed when I went to my first BBQ, over in Estepona. I started the hour long bus journey resplendent in my finest outfit – black waistcoat, black shirt with diamante brooch at the throat, black baggy trousers and thick felt studded boots, my hair defiantly gelled and spiked. Sixty minutes later the other passengers had become so concerned at the weirdo

50

LIKE THAT!!!!

slumped over the back seats sweating profusely that they begged the driver to pull over so they could open a window – this was in pre-air conditioning days. I poured myself gasping into the street, my hair plastered to my face, and that was the end of my Goth phase. The rest of the 80s was spent in regulation Marbella style T-shirt and ripped jeans, although I still maintained the gelled hair look. Think Mozart in the film Amadeus and you get the general idea. The build-up to a big night out included applying industrial quantities of hairspray to get my hair just right. I’m sure that I was single handedly responsible for the hole in the ozone level above Banus. Then I’d leap on my Mobylette and, in those pre-helmet days, tear down to the Port. Obviously when I arrived at Salduba my hair looked like I had been blasted through a wind tunnel, so it was off to the bathrooms (Salduba has big mirrors in the bathroom) to go through the whole process again. My look, ahem, ‘Mellowed’ during my last two years at the English International College. I was playing guitar in a band, studying art and English and was heavily into The Doors and Hendrix. So I wore collarless shirts, grew my hair long and added a Shakespearean beard. Visiting parents thought that I was the drama teacher… A return to London saw me pitch head first into plaid shirts and the whole grunge scene, with my hair now shoulder length à la Kurt Cobain, until the terrible day that I caught the reflection of the back of my head in the mirror and saw the beginnings of a bald patch. I come from a long line of bald men, including my father, who puts his hair loss down from having to wear a crash helmet when he was a racing driver in the 60s. Without hesitation the next day I walked into the nearest hair salon and asked the stylist to chop the lot off. I can still remember her shrieks of glee as she hacked away and the comment that the place was so full of long hair afterwards that it looked as if someone had shot Russell Brand with a Bazooka.

My hair has stayed cropped ever since, and I’ve lived by the mantra of “God made just a few perfect heads. On the rest He put hair” I’ve avoided the temptation of transplants (bad) or bandanas (only Johnny Depp looks good in a bandana. In fact Johnny Depp could look good in a banana), but now I’m in my 40s I am trying to single handedly bring the hat back to Marbella. In the meantime I’ve given up trying to wear street style (there’s nothing worse than a middle aged bloke in skateboard gear and baggy jeans) and am trying out a look that I like to think is Mellow Mediterranean Mod. And, due to the fact that I wasn’t born innately stylish (In my next life I wasn’t to come back as an Italian please), whenever I’m faced with a fashion decision, I find myself asking the following question

Would David Niven wear this????

lthough a disastrous domestic employment report at the end of May seemed to suggest that the US recovery was facing severe headwinds, the Federal Reserve’s ‘beige book’ economic survey for the AprilMay period concluded that economic momentum was actually picking up. Yet, less than three weeks later, the Fed cut its 2012 growth forecasts to 2.4% from 2.9%. At the beginning of July, the International Monetary Fund followed suit, trimming its US growth forecasts to 2.0% (from 2.1%) for 2012 and to 2.25% (from 2.4%) for 2013. Subsequent data, such as a drop in consumer spending that contributed to three consecutive months of declining retail sales, resulting in prospective annualised second-quarter GDP growth of only 1.5% (after 2.0% in the first quarter), appear to have validated these downward revisions.

By Jesper Hertz

FORMIDABLE CHALLENGES LOOM The momentum of the US economy has clearly deteriorated rapidly and much faster than most analysts had anticipated. Aside from this however, a number of forthcoming events will cause additional concerns as the year progresses. To begin with, the Presidential election in November suggests that politicians will focus more or less exclusively on the upcoming campaign, implying something of a government policy paralysis in the meantime. Post-election, the US will approach a year-end ‘fiscal cliff’ that represents a dilemma for policymakers; if the $4 trillion package of tax increases and spending cuts due to come into force at the beginning of 2013 goes ahead, it risks taking the economy back into recession, but if the scope of the package is modified to be less stringent, it will increase the size of the deficit and possibly lead to a eurozone-style financial crisis. The other major risk, that of the US debt ceiling of $16.4 trillion being reached, has thankfully been averted (a delay in resolving this issue last year cost the US its AAA rating). However, given that this

is an election year, a workable political compromise ahead of the event for the fiscal cliff seems unlikely as yet. These concerns are not shared by everyone, however. Some analysts argue that the weakness reflected in recent statistical reports masks a stronger underlying momentum in the US economy, and point to seasonal factors that they regard as having at least partly overstated the apparent slowdown. Once these factors have been adjusted, they argue, the pace of any further deterioration should be mitigated somewhat (recent labour market statistics suggest that this may indeed be the case). Nevertheless, even if the situation is not as dire as the headline numbers suggest and subsequent data releases give greater cause for optimism, US investors are

still likely to face a ‘wall of worry’ as the aforementioned

deadlines approach. nordeaprivatebanking.com

An array of mushroom, taupe & white tones for the walls were applied, and contrasted by patterns and textures in a variety of materials in darker and lighter tones.

“I met my client in the luxury community of El Madroñal where they had just bought a typical Andalusian-style villa with a very rustic and traditional décor. The client’s vision, and what I loved about this project, was the challenge to introduce to this traditional house an elegant contemporary style, and to create a fresh and inviting atmosphere. We went through each room and

Wallpapers, stucco and paint effects in specific areas of the house brought depth and set a harmonious backdrop. On the entrance hall balcony, we built three alcoves, for a stunning display of artwork, adding spot lighting to highlight the display - looks beautiful at night! The accent 6 meter tall wall, opposite the staircase, was painted in a deep charcoal stucco effect, as were the alcoves’ back walls. The white giant ball light hanging from the tall ceiling in contrast with the dark stucco effects and the displayed artwork gave the entrance hall a stunning dramatic style. To create two atmospheres in the lounge - a TV area and another to entertain guests - instead of building up a wall all the way up to close off the room, I suggested to bring up a pony wall just the right height to divide the two areas but still maintain an open space.

We demolished the wall that divided kitchen from dining room, and replaced it with a modern island in the middle to keep an open plan and get breathtaking views of the Mediterranean coastline right over to Africa.

The contemporary Stix garden fire in stainless steel is produced by premium brand Ecosmart fire and is a completely free standing, portable bio ethanol fire designed to be used outdoors. The burner will give fantastic heat, burning for up to eight hours on just a single 2.5 litre refill. The removable lid is used to extinguish the flame and cover the burner when it is not in use, which also prevents dust, leaf litter, rain and debris from falling into the 304 grade stainless steel tank. These contemporary garden fires generate significant heat from real flames and as they use liquid bio ethanol, they are very eco-friendly and clean, with no harmful gases, sparks or soot. In addition, the Stix garden fire is also safe for children and pets as the surroundings never get extremely hot. The Flow garden furniture collection from Manutti Belgium is completely weather proof outdoor furniture and made from the same high-tech fabric used on smart yachts. The finishing on this modern garden furniture range is flawless and the fabric is very comfortable to touch. Seams are welded as well as sewn, so if a drop of water does manage to get through it will drain away through the specially designed cushions.

TORQUE TALK

Motoring author, racing driver and photo-journalist Ian Kuah reports on the new PAGANI HUAYRA

I

first met Horacio Pagani at the world debut of his Zonda at the 1999 Geneva Auto salon, where he calmly told me that this sensational looking supercar had full EU type approval, and was ready for production.

This statement was as amazing as the stunning 21st Century supercar in front of me, and in stark contrast to the usual would-be supercar makers who show a concept car, and then start taking deposits to finance its development.

79

TORQUE TALK “The new design had to bear the Pagani hallmark through and through. The basis of our philosophy comes from the tenet of Leonardo da Vinci that the twin Renaissance disciplines of art and science must harmoniously co-exist.” Believing that the element of air is fundamental to his car in terms of aerodynamics, power production and cooling, Pagani has once again named his creation after a wind. Where the Zonda took its name from a strong wind in his native Argentina, the Huayra name comes from Huayratata, the god of wind worshipped by the ancient people of the Bolivian and Peruvian Andes. With this in mind, it is no surprise that the management of airflow around and through the Huayra’s bodyshell was top of the agenda. Where the Zonda used its shape and fixed aerodynamic devices to good effect, its successor has adopted

Exactly 12 years later, Pagani unveiled the Huayra (pronounced WHY-RAH) at the 2011 Geneva Salon, and explained that he had actually started work on this Zonda replacement, known as Project C9, as far back as 2003. In the scheme of things, this is the way major manufacturers, not small specialist supercar makers, work. But then Pagani is no ordinary specialist supercar maker. Defying received wisdom that no one can go from zero to hero in so few years these days, the Pagani name now carries the gravitas of Ferrari and Lamborghini in the rarified atmosphere of supercar royalty. “The turn of the 20th Century saw a great renaissance in the supercar world,” Horacio Pagani explained. “The huge financial commitment of the major manufacturers gave us the Bugatti Veyron, Ferrari Enzo, Lamborghini Murciélago, and Mercedes SLR McLaren, all designs that raised the bar even higher.” “With the high standard of performance and dynamics of these extraordinary new machines in mind, we had to seriously re-assess the competitiveness of our Zonda, a car we designed in the early ‘90s, froze in ’94 and launched in ’99.” “In the course of thinking about the direction its successor would take, we conceived a car with quite different form, dimensions, technology and dynamics,” Horacio continued.

80

the ellipse as a major design hallmark, incorporating it into the Huayra’s front and rear.

While these technologies would influence the Huayra’s detail development, the basic shape had to be generated first. Moving on from the already radically shaped Zonda, Horacio penned a longer car with a 70mm wider track, and its more spacious cabin positioned 40mm further aft.

Thus, the wide front air intake embraces a clear ellipse within an incomplete but implied one, while a pair of smaller, vertical ellipses on each front wing contain the front lights. At the rear, the distinctive central exhaust with its four outlet pipes is now the visual focus of another ellipse formed by the engine cooling grill on one plane and the trailing edge of the roof canopy on another.

It is a given that a supercar’s silhouette should be clear and easy to identify at a glance. Working initially with eight scale models, and finally two 1:1 scale models and hundreds of drawings, the Pagani design teamed conceived, developed and honed the chosen design to perfection.

Form follows function at Pagani, and the whole car is shaped like a wing, necessary to counter inherent lift by reducing the length of the upper part of this ‘wing’. This was achieved by making the front of the car relatively high.

There are four computer-controlled flaps, two of which are used to increase down force over the rear axle when braking hard. Combined with active damping on the front axle, they work to limit weight transfer, improving mechanical grip and thus the effectiveness of the huge carbon-ceramic Brembo brakes. In fast cornering, the active damping, combined with selective use of the flaps on the unloaded side of the car work together to counteract body roll in fast cornering, to the benefit of both handling and grip. The immensely strong central tub is made from a mixture of carbon-titanium, with ballistic kevlar for extra strength in the rear bulkhead. The latter protects occupants both from the fuel tank within

The shape of a car’s front grille and lights are commonly used to establish a strong brand identity, and here, Horacio uses

TORQUE TALK

Huayra features clever design features such as the hollow structural carbon-fibre bracing strut behind the dashboard that doubles as an air-conditioning distribution duct to save weight and complexity. With 5,980cc of displacement, the AMG V12 biturbo motor starts off with inherently good torque. Two modified IHI turbochargers and other tweaks including the intake and exhaust bring this to a rousing 730hp at 5,800rpm, with 1,000Nm of torque from 2,250 to 4,500rpm. Claimed performance includes a 0-100km/h time of 3.3 sec and a 358km/h top speed. Whether you are driver or passenger, pure theatre is the best way to describe the Pagani Huayra experience. The gullwing doors are always a talking point, but Pagani has managed to arrange the opening angle and the height of the seat in such a way that someone of medium height can just reach the door pull without having to stretch up out of his or her seat as in the SLS AMG. The ignition key is Mercedes at heart, but now comes encased in a solid block of Huayra-shaped aluminium that splits in two, USB stick style, for you to insert the rear half into the ignition slot.

and the engine should either be moved towards the cabin in a big accident. A clever way of minimising the potential for a fuel spillage in a crash is the placement of the pumps and ECU in the tank, with just one tube emerging from the tank to feed the fuel rail via a one-way valve. The front and rear sub-frames are built from ADV15 chrome-molybdenum steel and bolted to the centre tub. The sub frames are designed to progressively collapse in an impact and can be easily replaced as a unit. The immense strength and easy repairs engendered by this arrangement was clearly shown during the US market crash test regime where Pagani was able to re-use the same centre tub for the first seven of the 14 mandatory crash tests as it emerged from each unscathed. In fact after the 57km/h (35mph) test, which is head-on into a concrete block, the front windscreen was not even cracked. “During Project C9’s development, the various models of Zonda evolved in parallel, and showed us that it was far from being obsolete when compared to newer rivals,” said Horacio. “My teams worked on these projects simultaneously and fed off each others

82

findings. In the course of sharing engineering concepts, material, safety and other information, the Zonda R became a key rolling laboratory for the Huayra, particularly in its suspension design.” The change from the Zonda’s naturally aspirated motor to a turbocharged one fundamentally shaped the character of the Huayra from the word go. While some manufacturers claim to have created turbocharged engines that act more like naturally aspirated ones, Pagani and engine partner, AMG, have unashamedly embraced the intrinsic nature of the big bi-turbo V12 and called it their own. Compared to big turbocharged sports saloons like the BMW M6, Audi RS6 and especially the S65 AMG, whose engine shares its DNA with the Huayra unit, this hand-built V12 is not only more powerful and torque rich, it sits amidships in a supercar weighing just 1,350kg.

Once you have done that, you turn the key two clicks and wait while the transmitter ‘handshakes’ with the cars ECU and wakes the system up. A couple of seconds later, the beautiful turned metal dials of the instrument pack come alive with a flourish of blue lights, and the speedo and rev counter needles flick round to full scale deflection before returning to zero. Twist the key again and a bark from exhaust tells you the 12 cylinders are up and running. This is pure theatre. Today’s strict noise regulations mean that this bark and the subsequent growling idle are nowhere nearly as loud as the Zonda’s, but they are still inspiring enough to keep the enthusiast happy. It is widely agreed that a good dualclutch gearbox is the fastest and smoothest gearchange solution on the planet. The downside is that such a transmission, built to handle 1,000Nm of torque, would weight around 170kg.

Couched in other terms, the carbonfibre Pagani is nearly a ton lighter than the big Mercedes-AMG autobahn stormer, and 10kg lighter than a Porsche GT3 RS 4.0, which has only two-third of its power.

With the gearbox transversely hung off the back of the engine that would have a seriously negative effect on the cars weight distribution. So Pagani opted for a more conventional seven-speed, automated manual gearbox with dual-plate clutch solution from Xtrac, weighing a more reasonable 96kg.

Apart from the extensive use of carbonfibre, carbon-titanium and ballistic Kevlar for its central tub and body panels, the

Inconel exhaust system that weighs just 10kg. The front/rear weight distribution is 44/56 percent, and the cars centre of gravity is just in front of the rear bulkhead. To select first gear, you push the big alloy gear lever to the right, away from N and pull the right paddle on the steering column. Some clicking and whirring signifies something is happening with solenoids between the cockpit and the cogs in the bowels of the transmission, and then you are in first. Pulling away is more like a manu-matic of yore rather than a slick modern automatic, but much smoother. Still, there is that will it, won’t it feel that makes you hesitate, at least mentally, when pulling away at a roundabout or out of a T-junction. In reality, it is the near perfection of the rest of the driving dynamics that throws the spotlight on the gearbox. For instance, the ride, on 19 and 20-inch forged alloys with bespoke 255/35ZR19 and 335/30ZR20 Pirellis PZero is firm but supple at low speeds, striking a fine balance between the sports saloon-like comfort of the McLaren MP4-12C and the old-school firmness of a Lamborghini Gallardo.

The Ohlins dampers with their external fluid reservoirs and constant rate steel springs also do a magnificent job at high speeds. Together with the active aero package this highly developed suspension engenders the Huayra with go kartlike precision in slow bends, and supreme balance and awesome mechanical grip in faster curves. The power steering ratio of 2.2 turns lock-to lock feels instinctively right, and on tight and twisty hill roads, you can negotiate open hairpins without removing your hands from the wheel. Because the ratio is linear and absolutely spot on, the steering feels perfect for the chassis turn-in rate with never a hint of nervousness at any speed. Pagani offer three levels of power assistance, and my test car had the middle setting. Luca Venturi, Pagani’s PR Manager, told me that some who have driven the car said it was too heavy, but I personally found it re-assuring both at speed and around town. I do agree however, that the steering feel is not as intimate as the Zonda’s. Somewhere along the line, 25 percent of the information from the tarmac has been filtered out.

Blasting down the twisty country roads, it is amazing to see a front flap popping up and then down as you angle into a fast bend, followed by the opposite one as you turn the other way. On a really curvy road, the flaps look as if they are dancing an elegant ballet. Brake hard and the two rear flaps will pop up to drastically increase drag and keep the tail down, as the active front dampers simultaneously increase pressure in their anti-dive mode. It feels simply amazing to drive a car that resists dive and roll so well and so seamlessly. The massive Brembo Carbo-Ceramic brakes provide tremendous stopping power. The brake pedal is heavy, but full of consistent feel and a weighing that does not change disconcertingly from first application to release, unlike some rival systems. “We started discussing a new engine with AMG back in 2005,” Horacio explained. ‘We told them we had started designing a new car and asked what they had in the pipeline since it was obvious that the existing V12 would not meet the EU6 emissions laws that were looming on the horizon.”

83

TORQUE TALK

“They proposed a tuned 700bhp version of the M157 bi-turbo motor that was soon going into production,” Horacio related. “We had a quiet word with some of our customers about this and they all said no way, it has to be a V12 or nothing.”

That’s what I thought at first, especially as the 12 big piston engine does not pick up revs especially fast, compared to a smaller six or eight cylinder unit. But past 5,000rpm, the already heady power delivery suddenly becomes even stronger.

“AMG then told us the V12 engine would have to be turbocharged to meet the emissions and fuel economy targets being set,” said Horacio. “I also told them that I did not like turbochargers because of their lag, and that Pagani clients identified with the feel and response of the big, naturally-aspirated V12. AMG said that they could overcome all these issues with an evolution of their M158 V12 biturbo, and that we would be pleasantly surprised.”

The feeling is not explosive like in an F40 where it is all or nothing. Instead, it just gets progressively more powerful and keeps on going to 6,500rpm. But from 5,500 onwards, it feels like you have just cut in the afterburner on a jet fighter, and the increasing thrust pins you back in your seat.

I have always said that performance is relative and numbers do not tell the whole story. This is certainly the case with the Huayra’s engine, which is torque rich and lag free at low revs around town. I took it down to just over idle speed in third, and it pulled away smoothly. Once past 1,500rpm, the massive torque curve and low kerb weight accelerated us rapidly away. Use 5,000rpm, and the Huayra is supercar fast. You think that because peak power is developed at 5,600rpm, you have only 600rpm left to go before all the horses are spent.

84

Horacio Pagani

The Huayra delivers its ballistic performance with a cultured V12 roar, and a mass of turbocharged whooshes and whistles when you upshift. The old saying, “If you’ve got it, flaunt it,” has never been more appropriate, and Pagani made a conscious decision to use the cars forced aspirated nature as a strength, and emphasises it in the Huayra’s character and soundtrack. This tack has created an all-new paradigm for the second generation Pagani, and one that makes it a completely different animal from the Zonda. Where the Zonda is instant and furious at all speeds, and makes the most glorious automotive soundtrack on earth, the Huayra can be described as a more subdued offspring that can unleash an even greater fury in a more measured and refined way. Like all good offspring, it is faster, stronger and smarter. Both cars are totally Pagani, and represent two generations of Horacio’s ideas as well as the changing priorities of the supercar in the 21st Century. Like the Zonda, the Huayra always feels special, and at this rarified level, that sense of occasion each time you drive it, or even just sit in it, is simply priceless. Local Dealer: Guarnieri

PIG TALES By Padre Peter

O

nce upon a time a Chinese peasant left his hut in charge of his pig. It is not known what the porcine miscreant did behind the man’s back, but upon his return he found his home in flames and the pig trapped inside. A delicious aroma assailed his distressed nostrils. Thus, legend tells us, was roast pork born. Very soon, all over China, there was a rash of house burnings, and the smell of roast pork spread over the land. This story may not be true. I cannot say. What is true, however, is that the pig has played a conspicuous part in the

history of human gastronomy. Indeed, it has played a conspicuous part in history in general, and particularly so in Spain where, after the Reconquista, it became a matter of national pride to eat pork. It proved beyond doubt that one was neither Jew nor Muslim, but a true Christian subject of Los Reyes Catolicos. Jewish converts became known as ‘chueta’ (an old word for pork fat) and the Inquisition was very keen for its targets to eat pork in proof of their conversion; (although there

is a popular Castilian saying that ham is more likely to

COSTA CUISINE produce Christian converts than anything the Inquisition can do!) And, of course, there is an-

the mark, and he found himself choking in the pillory with the meat being burned beneath him.

other side to the coin. In the eleventh century the heir to the French crown died as a result of a pig tripping up his horse (the heir’s, not the pig’s). In consequence, pigs were banned from the city of Paris. Nevertheless, four centuries later the Public Executioner was empowered to round up all stray porkies for slaughter at the Maison Dieu. London had the same problem, and in 1292 it was necessary to appoint four ‘Killers of Swine’. In Frankfurt it was not so much the animals as their abodes which gave rise to offence, and in 1481 the City Council was obliged to

“Cooked as well as raw”; the mediaeval equivalent of the Takeaway! Simple Simon’s Pieman was the Colonel Saunders of his day. These tradesmen were very competitive on account of their policy of bulk buying, and a nice piece of sow offered cheap would have been a great temptation. They did a roaring trade. The Venetian Ambassdor to Paris in 1557 wrote in amazement that “a capon, a partridge, a hare, cost less ready to eat, larded and roasted, than if bought live in the market…” The

pass a decree stating that pigsties could not be located on public streets.

provenance was perhaps somewhat suspect but, hey, who was to tell once it was nicely larded and roasted? It must be said, however, that the authorities by and large remained vigilant. Pie men, butchers, and other food traders were frequently inspected, and in 1498 the Venetian inspectors had to deal with some oil sellers who were selling oil in which syphilitic patients had been immersed in the hope of a cure. Their report stated indignantly that the oil had been found to be “full of impurities and organisms”. Needless to say, the cure was largely ineffective.

These draconian measures were often self-defeating. Pigs were invaluable as refuse collectors, and had the added advantage of being edible machines. The more refuse they collected, the more delicious they became. And the home grown variety, bred at one’s own front door, tasted far preferable to the flesh sold by the pork butchers. Indeed, one pork butcher, John, son of John Gylessone, was indicted in London in 1348 in that he “had found a certain dead sow, thrown out near the ditch without Aldgate, in the suburb of London; which sow he then had flayed, and the flesh of the same, cooked as well as raw, he exposed for sale”. Trading Standards were quick off

It is perhaps not surprising that plague and pestilence were endemic in the mediaeval world. The Black Death of 1348/1349 carried off a third, perhaps a half, of the population of Europe.

England was reduced from about four million to perhaps two and a half million inhabitants. It was felt that it was smell which transmitted disease, and in 1306 London was declared a smokeless zone as the smell of burning coal was considered unhealthy (who said that History doesn’t repeat itself?!). To

the housewife of the Middle Ages the smell of bad meat was pure poison. Vinegar was widely used to mask this and, once masked, clearly the meat was fit to eat! At the

very top of Society, of course, spices and herbs were widely used. ‘The Goodman of Paris’ wrote a recipe for

his young wife in the 1300s in which he expatiated on the beneficial effects of a sauce called ‘Cameline’. “Break ginger, cinnamon, and saffron”, he carolled (and he must have been earning a pretty hefty screw to afford such ingredients!), “and moisten in wine with half a nutmeg, then take it out of the mortar. Then have white breadcrumbs, not toasted, but moistened in cold water and broken in the mortar. Moisten them with wine and sieve them, then boil all together and put in brown sugar last of all; and that is Winter Cameline”. I will spare my gentle reader the summer variety. The Borgias, of course, had a rather interesting recipe for ‘Cantarella’, involving bears’ saliva and strychnine, which they kept bottled in the Vatican pantry against the arrival of unwelcome guests. But that is another story…

hen considering how best to rate restaurants on the Costa del Sol, I often grade them in terms of where I would take visiting friends and family. Tikitano is a sure winner in this category on many different levels. There simply is no better restaurant on the Coast in terms of location. Its elevated position on its own private beach nestled between San Pedro and Estepona ensures stunning views across the straits of Gibraltar and to African beyond. These views are marvelously uninterrupted and different from its Marbella counterparts with no high buildings or obstructive hotels; one could sit all evening drinking it in. Architecturally Tikitano is also unique – with its Polynesian thatched pagoda, the main building is remarkable, with a year-round terrace that is extremely popular in the summer months and comfortably glassed in during the cooler winter months. There is a private tropical garden to one side which lends itself perfectly to private gatherings and weddings, and can be hired out exclusively for those purposes. The restaurant is particularly well knows as a destination for live music with a constantly changing rota of acts. The middle of the building serves as a dance floor with a high ceiling draped with fairy lights and plenty of space to dance the night away. Our group spent a highly enjoyable summer evening being looked after by

90

the fantastic Scarlett Smits, probably the most professional and helpful restaurant manager on the Coast. As we sipped our rose wine and watched the sun set behind the Atlas mountains, we perused the menu – a crowd-pleasing mix of Iberian and Modern European dishes with a few Asian touches. I am always encouraged by menus that don’t overstretch themselves, and stick to good seasonal ingredients properly presented and carefully produced and this is exactly what Tikitano delivers. We decided to test the tricolore salad, which was a real winner. Presented with height and a well-designed garnish topper, the dish was raised from the flat monotonous triumvirate of ingredients to a visually exciting tower of contrasting textures and well-seasoned ingredients. Served with a lovely pesto vinaigrette, this was a really tasty and

COSTA CUISINE

refreshing way to begin our meal. We also tried the assortment of starters, a sociable and appealing option. The dish consisted of crab rolls, Spanish Iberian ham croquettes, bread crumbed mushrooms and deep fried aubergine sticks, accompanied with four sauces. The dish was quite reflective of the menu as whole, keeping everyone happy with its combination of Anglo-Spanish flavours and an Oriental touch. The selection of main courses is genuinely hard to choose from, but we decided to opt for the papillote of turbot with Iberian ham jus and sauted shallots. Presented at our table in a freshly-baked foil parcel, the fish was cooked to perfection in its own steam which had preserved its natural moisture perfectly. With such a fish that is prized for its delicate flavour, this dish was a credit to the chef by harnessing the flavor without undermining the turbot by drying it out or overpowering it with heavy sauces. We finished our meal with a delicious orange and chocolate crepe, another classic choice that was well presented and carefully created. The crepe was soft and not too thick with a subtle cit-

rus kick, and the chocolate sauce was creamy and perfectly sweet. This was a beautiful finish to a wholly satisfying meal, in a breathtaking location with friendly and welcoming staff. GROVY BABY READ OIL ABOUT IT By Padre Peter

I

n 1872 an archaeologist named Hans Dressel dug into a 50 metre high rubbish tip on the banks of the Tiber, and unearthed approximately 40 million earthenware vessels. Each was carefully labelled according to year, producer and quality. Many came from Baetica; modern day Andalusia. All had contained olive oil. Even now, Spain is the largest producer of olive oil in Europe. Olive trees have been cultivated around the Mediterranean since the 17th century before Christ, and when Noah’s ark finally came to rest on Mount Ararat tradition tells us that the first plant he saw was an olive tree. Its descendants have flourished. There are ap-

proximately five million olive trees in the European Union.

(Has some Brussels bureaucrat really counted them?) These produce approximately three million tonnes of

92

olive oil annually, of which nearly half comes from Spain. (This compares with the 200,000 tons produced in California, where the Spanish introduced olive trees in 1769.) Over two million hectares of land in Spain is given over to the cultivation of olive trees, and more than 60 per cent of this is to be found in Andalusia. Most people use olive oil for cooking. Even in the 6th century before Christ, the Book of Leviticus was instructing: “in a pan it shall be made with oil…” But cooking apart, are we aware that the Talmud also recommends its use, mixed with salt and water, for bad breath? (Those who have travelled in the Metro or the ‘tube’ will be aware that many people seem to have forgotten this, which is strange, as the Talmud also enjoins the consumption of olive oil as an aid to memory!) Away from the kitchen,

The author, a Worker-Priest, is a Maître Conseil en Gastronomie Française, and holds the Palmes Culinaires and Mâitrise Escoffier of the Conseil Culinaire de Grande Bretagne. He is a former Maître de Table de la Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, a member of the Craft Guild of Chefs of Great Britain, and was for many years National Secretary of the Association Culinaire Française de Grande Bretagne. In 1978 he was a Runner-up in the “Chef of the Year” competition at Hotelympia. He holds the Silver Medal of the Cookery and Food Association.

however, we find that we are dealing with something truly miraculous. Indeed, ancient Greek athletes

were massaged with olive oil before competing, so that the wisdom and strength of the goddess Athena would permeate them. (The Victor

Ludorum was then crowned with olive leaves. The brows of the second were adorned with laurel. Atop the third was parsley - presumably with a nice lemon and oil dressing.) Of course, it is important that the correct type of oil is used. This depends upon the olive. Some oils are fruity and sweet. Some oils are robust and challenging. Some are cloudy. Some are as clear as an Andalusian summer’s day. What they have in common is that they all contain monounsaturated fatty acids which, in layman’s terms, means that they prevent cholesterol, and so

COSTA CUISINE combat many heart and circulatory diseases. They aid digestion, and are beneficial in the treatment of stomach ulcers. Rubbed into the body they refresh the skin. Rubbed into the hair they make it shine. Claims have been made for them in the treatment of ringworm, anti-ageing, boils, earache, constipation – the list is endless, and their consumption is even said to increase sexual desire! But clearly, the type of olive oil that one rubs in to alleviate the pain of haemorrhoids, for example, is not the same as that required, when mixed with salt, for use as a toothpaste. This is particularly beneficial when applied with an olive twig – called a miswak in Arabic. (And miswaks aside, people with piles should be particularly careful not to confuse the two procedures). All in all, in Moorish Al-Andalus the “zaitoon” was considered a specific for no fewer than sixty ailments and diseases, and many people share that faith today. But which oil to use? In Andalusia we have three main varieties, and many shops will sell bottles of these oils suitably labelled. We have the Picual olive, which is remarkably fruity

and lends sophistication to both fruit and sweet dishes. Try it dribbled over oranges! Oil from the Hojiblanca olive is also particularly popular in China, which imports in the region of sixty three thousand tonnes of olive oil each year; 82% of which is ‘virgin’. This oil has both sweet and bitter overtones, and is excellent for marinades and gazpacho. The Verdial olive, a product mainly from the Velez-Málaga area, produces mild and fruity oil with almond overtones. Elsewhere in Spain we also find the Arbequina olive (good for mayonnaise), the Empeltre (try it with sheep’s cheese), and the Cornicabra (sweet, but slightly bitter – pour it over vegetables). Between November and February, when the fruit is ripe, armies of pickers descend upon the groves. The harvesting is manually intensive, as damaged fruits do not produce the best oil. Within 72 hours of the fruit being picked, it is ground to a paste, pits and all, traditionally using granite rollers. This paste is then pressed between circular mats, once made from esparto grass, but now generally made from plastic. Flor de Aceite, which is produced in very small quantities, ex-

udes of its own volition from this paste. A very small amount, it is carefully collected and bottled, retaining all the flavour, vitamins, and unsaturated fatty acids which make it unique. It is these fatty (oleic) acids which determine its quality. The lower

the proportion of acid, the fruitier and finer it tastes. Next

after the Flor de Aceite grade, we find Aceite de Oliva Virgen Extra. This must be cold pressed, and the acidity level must not exceed one gram of oleic acid to one hundred grams of oil (a level of 1.0) Aceite de Oliva Virgen is also cold pressed, but the acidic level may reach 2.0. Aceite de Oliva (which is actually the best for cooking) is produced when the paste is treated with heat or solvents to remove the last drop of liquid. Its acidic level can be high, but 4.0 is quite reasonable for general use. Finally we have Pomace Olive Oil, about which the less said the better (it was temporarily banned by the Spanish government in 2001). It is extracted from the exhausted pulp by heat and solvents, and has little use apart from deep frying. But now one comes to think of it, what about those itching piles?

Somehow the whole combination comes together to make so much more than the sum total of its parts. With any meats to a large extent you are at the mercy of your butcher. I went to The English Butcher in Duquesa and bought a beautifully matured Argentinian Filet, returned home and set about making the compote.

L

iving in Marbella it is very easy to feel inspired by the ingredients around us, we are truly spoilt for choice. We were throwing a lunch party for some dear friends over from London for the first time, there is so much for us all to catch up on so I wanted a dish that would be relatively pain free, hands off and delicious. Fun is key, taste is hugely important. I wanted a dish that would reflect the best of the Mediterranean...Filet of Beef Tagliata, with a compote of tomatoes and aubergine, perfect. I can prepare

the tomato and garlic oil to the bowl with the aubergine, season well then tear basil leaves over the top. I added some slow roasted tomatoes i had made overnight. Simply cut tomatoes in half put them in a roasting tray with lots of rock salt thyme and rosemary stalks, big glug of virgin olive oil, put them in the oven at its lowest setting for 10 hours. Cover the bowl with cling film and leave to infuse in a warm place for 15 minutes. This compote can be served warm or cold and is the perfect accompaniment to most grilled meats. Before you want to cook the steaks take them out of the fridge about half an hour beforehand and drizzle with a little olive oil but dont season.

In a large frying pan heat olive oil and vegetable oil together until the pan is so hot the oil is smoking, add the slices of aubergine and cook both sides until they are golden brown, should take about 3 minutes, drain on kitchen towel and add to a bowl.

When the guests arrive, get your griddle pan scorchingly hot, full heat for at least 5 minutes, then sear your steaks on both sides for 2 to 3 minutes for rare, 4 to 5 minutes for medium rare, allow to rest for 5 minutes and pour yourself a well earned glass of rioja.

Clean out the pan, add Virgin Olive oil and a bruised clove of garlic, just give it a bash. The oils and aromas will come out of the garlic into the oil, then discard the garlic turn the heat up to full blast and get the oil smoking hot, then add the cherry tomato halves, they take not much more than a minute to cook, add

To serve, simply place the aubergine and tomato compote mixture in the centre of each plate, slice the beef thinly and arrange on top, drizzle the beef juices from the frying pan around the plate and season with sea salt, now sit down and enjoy lunch. www.johnnys-kitchen.blogspot.com.es

Would you like your business to be more succesful? Everyone loves a go-getter, risk taker or to be more precise someone who’s willing to work for their rewards! Exactly the qualities needed to start a business in today’s climate, even without the complication of dealing with a foreign language. Established in 2004, Redline has recently introduced a simple but effective solution to business marketing and is currently one of the only companies on the Costa del Sol offering to become a complete external marketing department. So how does it work? In order to compete, businesses with fewer resources need the same, if not more access to professional marketing services. “It’s a great feeling to be able to help a business reach its potential. There is never a dull moment at Redline, it’s hot, hectic and we wouldn’t have it any other way”.

Line says,

“We work with all types of business (expat and Spanish) and get a real buzz from helping them succeed. Often starting from an original creative concept, we provide traditional marketing, PR copywriting and graphic design. Everything your need to keep the little ones entertained.

ADRENALINE

Rush By Christie Holland

W

e all know the kids are happy to spend the day playing at the beach but when it comes to night time, keeping the little ones entertained is a little more challenging. Why not head to the Costa del Sol´s most exciting theme park, Tivoli World, for an evening of white-knuckle rides, stimulating shows and diverse gastronomic options. Located just 30 minutes from Marbella in the Benalmadena region and surrounded by beautiful gardens and illuminated fountains, Tivoli World, is as enjoyable for the adults as it is for the youngsters. Admission is priced at only €6.95, making this adventure park not only a treat for the entire family but also excellent value for money. One piece of advice, buy a Supertivolino on arrival; this special pass allows you unlimited access on thirty seven of the rides. At only €14.00 it works out very valuable when the kids insist on riding the Grasshopper six times!

This year the theme park proudly presents its 40th anniversary show, The Great Russian Circus. An astonishing show set to thrill and amuse the entire family that will leave you gasping in awe at the remarkable acrobats, extraordinary jugglers and exciting knife throwers. With more than 40 rides suitable for all ages, Tivoli offers an opportunity for big and small to sample an evening of exhilaration and adrenaline. Soar to the top of the Free Fall Tower and enjoy wonderful views of the Costa del Sol before dropping 60 meters back down to ground; only for the brave! If that doesn´t leave you shaking with fear, head to the notorious Passage of Terror, a terrifying walking horror tour featuring new real life characters that is guaranteed to provide you with the haunt experience of a lifetime.

114

If you have under-fives with you why start your adventure at The Jungle Square where the kids can experience themed rides including The Jungle Express and a mini version of the free fall tower. PET PATROL

THE

FORGOTTEN ONES

S

ince the recession hit it is commonly known that one of the knock on effects is that thousands of people have left the coast. What has not been made quite so public, is the fact that many are choosing to leave behind their beloved pets – mostly cats. Either just dumping them at rescue centers or even throwing them out onto the streets to fend for themselves. Through no fault of their own, they are left to starve and are badly in need of our help. I am an avid animal lover, however cats have always held a special place in my heart. I have always opted for rescue cats over pedigree, as I feel there are too many unwanted kittens who need a loving home and might never be chosen as they are too ugly, too shy… basically not perfect. I currently have three fur babies, all with their own sad stories. As well as my own, my partner and I feed dozens of strays. We tend to move at least once a year and find litters of kittens wherever we go; I guess it’s our calling. At the Puente Romano complex, the feral are all pedigrees, Burmese, Rag Dolls, Siamese, you name it, I have never seen anything like it. Wealthy owners have obviously just up and left, leaving their ‘living toys’ behind. Thankfully a lovely lady visits each night to feed and water them and I have found many others who do the same all over the coast. However the Alzambra, Vasari Urbanization in Puerto Banús, baffles me. At the

By Nicola McGeorge

back of the urbanisation, far away from houses, is derelict land and the community bins. Two years ago we found over 2O very under nourished, weak kittens trying desperately to find food. Since then we have regularly been looking after them, which believe me, costs a lot, and not ONCE in that whole time has anyone else helped. Sadly we have lost quite a few of the cats, including our favourite aptly named Scruff, and it was very upsetting when we found his little body. There are currently twelve gorgeous kittens, all of whom are still young enough to tame and become pets. If anybody could give them a home, I know you would receive unconditional love in return. We know that we need to control their breeding and have been trying to work out a deal with a local vet so we trap, neuter and return them. There are others on the coast that have successfully managed this, Raphaella, a well known cat saviour, needs a special mention for castrating over 4OO cats, all out of her own pocket. She looks after all the cats on the rocks by the port in Banus; she is my hero. Sadly, not all good work is appreciated. A few weeks ago we arrived at Alhambra to find a gentlemen waiting for us. He told us we were not allowed into the community to feed the cats. My partner explained if we didn’t feed them and give them water in 4O degree heat the

kittens would die. This didn’t seem to bother the man, who just shrugged and said it was not allowed and that there were too many cats. We explained that feral cats were great for rodent control, and by providing them nutritious food it keeps them both from roaming in search of a food source and also less susceptible to disease and parasites. This gentleman then started to take down our number plate. It made me so angry, okay I understand not everyone likes animals, but why make life difficult for those that do and are only trying to help. So, I am asking you, our readers, to help. If you are looking to adopt a cat, please chose a stray and give them a second chance in life. If this is not possible, then please help us with the feeding and castrating. We cannot get to Alzambra every day therefore any help would be appreciated not only by us, but by the little ones themselves. Honestly you will feel wonderful afterwards when their little bellies are full and they give you that little look of thanks.

Each month, SOCIETY MARBELLA will share with you a small selection of the dogs and cats housed at ADANA, looking for a new home.

Latest news on the coast

D2430 COCO

Coco is a large brown Mastin/Sharpei cross with a white chest. She is a sweet, neutered female who is micro-chipped and vaccinated ready to be adopted. She did find a family but accidentally knocked her new mistress over twice in her exuberance. She is not a bad dog, she is actually quite shy, but just does not realise her size. She would love to be in a family with children and people who want to play with her!

D2641 ALLEGRA

Allegra is a very cute, lively little puppy who will be a small sized dog when fully grown. She is a very friendly, playful little girl who will make someone a lovely pet. She ideally needs to be adopted locally because she has a large hernia on her abdomen which ADANA will repair (free of charge) when she is neutered at around seven months of age.

D1771 FAN

Fan looks like a Labrador on short stumpy legs! He is very affectionate, sweet and friendly. He loves the water from the hosepipe and adores playing ball. He would make for a lovely family dog. He has been at the kennels since June 2009, it really is time he was chosen, he would be so happy in a home with someone to throw his ball for him. To offer Coco, Allegra, Fan or any of the other dogs at ADANA a home, contact the kennels on 952 113 467 or email adoptions@adana.es | adana.es ADANA.Estepona

EVA LONGORIA VISITS THE COAST’S HOTTEST NIGHT SPOTS

Marbella was awash with A List celebrities last month, and Hollywood star Eva Longoria was one of the most notable. Known for her charitable work, Eva visited the Costa del Sol to raise awareness of ‘The Philanthropic Weekend’, the Dynamic Walk-a-Thon and The Global Gift Gala. Whilst in town, she visited two of the coast’s most coveted venues; firstly, Daniel Shamoon hosted a private event in Suite del Mar for Eva and her friends, including actors Terrance Howard and Amaury Nolasco, footballer Julio Baptista and supermodel Sylvie Van Der Vaart. VIP clients of Suite were invited to mingle with the stars in order to promote Eva’s charity, which helps children with cancer and their families. After enjoying the soiree under the stars, Eva and her guests moved onto superclub Aqwa Mist, who hosted a welcome cocktail. A select 100 guests joined Eva and her fellow celebrity humanitarians, who enjoyed champagne and canapés on the Aqwa Mist terrace, all in aid of The Global Gift Gala 2012. theglobalgiftgala.com

Mr Gourmet Burger located on Avda Luis Braille 20 (on the main high street in San Pedro) opened its doors on July 31, providing the town with a brand new funky restaurant, offering a fresh take on burgers. Mr Gourmet Burger is a new concept in dining on the Costa del Sol, bringing together fun and informality with high quality cooking, to provide a unique range of luxury, speciality burgers served in relaxed, funky surroundings. The surroundings are modern, fun and equally appealing for families and those who simply enjoy substantial food, great flavours and cold beer. Forget traditional fast food, this is the modern alternative. All burgers are made of excellent quality ingredients; we’re talking about succulent lamb, juicy steak, caramelized onions, smoked mozzarella, pickled ginger and avocado to name but a few of the mouthwatering choices. mrgourmetburger.com
