Welcome to Iceni Magazine, The nights are drawing in since the clocks went back, so you are going to need something to fill your evenings, well here is a little something - issue 7. This month you may notice, as you look around that a lot of men are ‘growing their mo’s’ (moustache), rather than them trying to keep warm for winter, they are more than likely trying to raise awareness of men’s health. Movemeber was started in 2003 on the other side of the globe (in Australia) and has been gaining popularity each year as more men get involved. Norwich has its own team ‘Morwich’ headed up by Public House co-owner – David Hubbard. David and his brothers Nick and Daniel run The Surrey Tavern, who will host this year’s Morwich launch party and the subsequent, end of Movember party. Read more about the super(bar)man in the magazine. October saw the last glimpse of the GoGo Gorilla’s before they were surreptitiously sold off to the highest bidders. Iceni were lucky enough to get to interview the patron of the charity – Jake Humphrey. Find out more about Jake’s Favourite Gorilla, why he chose to be the patron of Break and a round-up of how much was raised during the exclusive event. Winter in Norfolk is no doubt every bit as beautiful as summer, albeit somewhat colder, with amazing winter sunsets to icy broad mornings. Even though the holiday trade has packed up for the season there are still many wonderful sights to behold, Edward Couzens-Lake gives us a colourful interpretation on Norfolk and sheds some light on some of the wonderful places to visit, even when the weather is less than favourable. After all that travelling and winter weather, why not go home and warm yourself up by cooking yet another fabulous dish from our resident Chef - Eric Snaith, brilliant as a winter warmer or even at a dinner party. We hope you enjoy issue 7, if you would like to leave feedback on our magazine, or if there is anything you would like to see included in future issues, visit our Facebook page, or send us a tweet, we would love to hear from you.

Upto 20 Words So, what do you buy someone who has everything, or, in my wife’s case, loves something personal and thoughtful, whilst not breaking the bank? She is always telling me that I’’’ ’m n’ot great with words – well at least that I never “tell her stuff that she likes to hear”. Well I’’’ll show her I thought. I’’’ve always been one for jotting down little ideas in my notebook as and when I think of them. I started observing all the things that she loves that she’s always harping on about! I then used my love of typography to reproduce all my observations into a rather unique print that I gave to her one Christmas. She did indeed love it. In fact she cried!’’

I recently started Tweeting and can’’’t quite believe the response I have had about my bread poster. I now have artisan bakers following me(!) from all over the world. That’s a great feeling! My wife says that Twittering is very apt for me. What can she mean? All Simon’s prints can be purchased from his website: www.upto20words.co.uk

Since then I have produced similar personalised posters for Mother’s day, wedding gifts, birthdays, anniversary’s to name but a few. We then decided that some people prefer to buy a gift that you can ‘pick off the shelf’ but which is still personal about a place or a popular hobby. It was easy to come up with things that we love about our favourite places and hobbies. For me, it was about baking bread. I can’’’t quite remember if it Paul Hollywood or Hugh F-W who first gave me the bread baking bug! Whoever it was, I’m eternally grateful, as it has proved (pardon the pun) to be one of the most satisfying things I have ever done. We have not purchased bread for about 2 years now. My favourite is sourdough but I have also baked bloomers, Ciabatta, Focaccia, Chelsea buns and Hot Cross buns.

Issue 07 2013

GLAMOUROUS! Have you ever noticed a stranger across a room who for some reason you just couldn’t take your eyes off of…..who draws your attention and you’re not sure why? Glamour is not based on a certain kind of face or body type. Everyone can be GLAMOUROUS! First you must understand what it is and where the look comes from. Its not about how much you spend on clothing jewellery or the latest hairstyle. It begins with the overall interest you take in the finer details of yourself. GET READY TO DAZZLE…. Here’s a checklist Be hygienic. Being clean and smelling nice are the base of looking good. Clean your teeth and wear deodorant. • The number one unglamorous thing to do is chew gum in public. • Take a look at your hands…. they must look cared for. Well-manicured nails, spotlessly clean hands and finger nails. • Hair. should be nice and organized. Your hair should be always shiny and never messy. Even when going to the gym try doing a high ponytail with no bumps. Whatever hairstyle you please make sure it looks nice and well kept. • Face. Your face should be flawless. That means no acne, no pimples. If you have acne or pimples try to find a skin product that works for you. Invest in good quality skincare products. Buy a cleanser, a toner and a moisturizer, for they are the basics of skincare. Be sure to exfoliate often, use a night cream and eye cream. If you can afford it get a professional facial once a month prices start at around £25. Keep eyebrows in good order they do frame your face. • Wax or shave legs and underarms

• Moisturise body too. • Makeup. Start with eyeliner, a small or medium amount of eyeliner is enough. Trace the natural shape of your eye on the upper lash-line, and put a little “flick” at the end, it’s a classic, always gorgeous look. Find your exact shade of concealer, and use that under your eyes if you have dark circles, and anywhere you may have scars etc. Use foundation if you need extra coverage or if your skin tone is uneven. To make your face appear more feminine, use a facial highlighter and apply on the high points of your face: your brow bone, your cheekbones, and the bridge of your nose. Curl your lashes and apply mascara. If using eye shadow choose two colours, apply the lighter one all over the lid and the darker one in the crease. Find a lip colour that works for you and use it, make sure you use a moisturiser before applying lip color. Use a blush on the apples of your cheeks, and contour your cheekbones with bronzer by sucking in your cheek bones and apply just under your cheekbones, and blending. • Shoes - do not wear run down shoes, worn heels, or those in need of a polish. • Make sure all the clothes you wear are clean, ironed and fit well. Do not wear items of clothing with stains or missing buttons. Co-ordinate ensure everything matches. • If you want to turn heads keep things uncluttered looking and more simple. Less is more.

A full length mirror is your best friend, remember to check your back view. Good posture is very important to look glamorous, whether sitting or standing. Article by Amanda Brown (Aroma Beauty Clinic) 57 Back Lane, Wymondham, NR18 OLB. Tel: 01953 600309 Visit: www.aromabeautyclinic.co.uk PAGE

Help Unlimited caters for a wide variety of domestic services, including full and part time nannies, au pairs, house keepers and even gardeners. In some cases insurance companies offer a discount if there is someone in the house at all times. With the pet sitting that Help Unlimited offer, your pets are not taken away from the environment that they are used to and their routine remains constant. A pre-visit is recommended to ensure that the animals are happy and this also gives the sitters a chance to familiarise themselves with the day to day routine. All of the sitters are thoroughly vetted, police checked and insured. The sitters are happy to carry out some domestic duties such as answering the telephone and watering plants. They will also ensure that there is milk and bread and a warm welcome home after your holiday. Moosey Art Frazer Baily has always had a passion for street art, but have never been very good at it, his head has always been full of ideas though. One day, a few months ago he got the idea to start promoting street art. Since then he hasn’t, looked back. ‘Art in my mouth’ will be his first show and it’s going really well. He has had no experience of doing anything like this before which is making the whole experience a lot more interesting to him. He has managed to get some of the biggest names in street art involved which is good for Norwich. His aim is to promote up-andcoming local artists by making them appear alongside big artists. In turn, he also hopes that Norwich becomes a hub for street art - as he has a slight addiction.

ROCK AND ROLL Issue 07 2013

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Rock and Roll Your Big Day Away! By Michelle Young, Evissa Weddings hen it comes to weddings, I love the fun, unique and different. And with the ever popular trend of the ‘vintage’ weddings, I knew exactly what I wanted for this shoot. There is no era more amazing than the rocking and rolling years of the 50’s! The fashion, the music, everything screams fun and that was the feeling I wanted to bring out from the day. That weddings can be beautiful, but most importantly they can be a whole lotta fun! For the venue, we went for the historical site of St Giles House Hotel on Upper St Giles Street in Norwich. The boutique hotel just oozes character from the black and white tiled floors of the reception and dark woods used around the interior, to the elegant chandelier hanging gracefully in the Walnut

Suite and the eclectic furniture scattered throughout. For the outside shots, we took a short jaunt over to the hidden gem that is Plantation Gardens boasting gothic and medieval features. Dressing the girls was so much fun! Antora Bridalwear, situated in Wymondham, have the most amazing range of 50’s ‘hot frocks’. Our bride was dressed in white, with red sash, a lace hairpiece instead of a veil and red shoes to change the traditional bridal look. And our bridesmaid to match wore red, with white polka dots. They then had the pleasure of being pampered by the amazing duo of Hair by Laura Hughes and Gemma Lamb MUA. Laura created those iconic big curls for the girls, whilst Gemma kept them looking rock and roll with heavier eye liner and lushious red lips.

The boys were more simple, once again trying to relax the day and make it more of a fun style, by simplifying the outfit to just a shirt with rolled up sleeves, trousers and braces, with the groom wearing a buttonhole to have him stand out from the two. And of course, boys being boys, they were definitely up for a laugh, especially when we had the groom ‘lifting’ the skirt of his bride and trying not to drop her for some of the shots!

ROCK AND ROLL Issue 07 2013

The rest of the finishing touches were done by ourselves, the Evissa Weddings team. I wanted to try and keep the influence of the sounds of the 50’s and how iconic the music of the era was, so used old vinyl records as place settings and even brought an old acoustic along for the day. Araminta handmade favour boxes, filling them with everyone’s favourite Jelly Belly jellybeans.

Our flowers were courtesy of the fantastic Pick at Lily Flowers situated on St Benedicts. They created stunning bouquets with the use of bright red flowers, luscious greenery and unique spotted feathers, wrapping the stems in a cute leopard print fabric. And the most amazing cake I have ever had grace my eyes was masterfully made by the very talented Sassa’s Cakes, combining different patterns for each layer, and finishing with handmade roses and a pair of lovebirds carrying the new couple’s ‘Mr & Mrs’ plaque. Truly Inviting designed the wedding stationery for the day, keeping to the same pattern idea as the cake, and Bows Selector helped with the room décor by supplying the jet black covers and cloth, as well as the red chair bows. And best of all, we had it all expertly captured by Camrovision Photography and Kaandaro Video!

It was a truly fantastic day, with the help of a great team and absolutely amazing suppliers. And I feel it was also a great way of showing couples that everything they need for their big day is right on their doorstep. The Norfolk wedding community is amazingly talented and I am ever grateful to be a part of it!

Images Supplied By Camrovision Photography

I would say the most amazing part of the day had to be when this beautiful, angel-like creation of white fins, blue leather interior and glistening chrome pulled up outside the hotel, a stunning cadillac from Cadillac Dreams, imported from the USA and restored to her former glory. It really was a statement piece for the era of the photoshoot and had heads turning everywhere!

Iceni Interviews Jake Humphrey Patron of Break

I

t was Thursday 3rd October the night that everyone had been waiting for - The auction of the GoGoGorillas for Break Charity and The Born Free Foundation at the Norwich Forum; the event was set to show the charities some great support. It was a crazy night with the Forum being transformed into a glamorous auction location, whilst sporting a red carpet and VIP tables glowing in a pink luminous light. It was great to be there to support these amazing charities; though it was even more amazing to be there to interview Break charity patron Jake Humphrey. Jake was bouncing around in the auction room with everyone wanting to get a few words from him, he sat down and spoke to me about the GoGoGorilla trail and Break itself. What has the GoGoGorilla art event has done for Norwich, but more importantly Break? It has done great things for Norwich - the GoGoGorilla art trail has brought people onto the streets and it’s got people together as well. This wasn’t just a trail that people did on their own with their children, they probably met at one gorilla and suddenly they were chatting “where are you going next, where is the nearest Gorilla”? They would then walk around Norwich together finding it. Genuinely, it sounds like a cliché but it has honestly brought people together and chatting in Norwich. It was all part of a special, lovely sunny summer. Though far more importantly than the gorillas, is the charity that is behind it. Have you a favourite Gorilla? Oh, of course I have. It’s the Gorilla who was at the Royal Norfolk show, which they also sponsored; Walstan. I love the artwork and the artist Alex Egan really did a fantastic job with Walstan. Her inspiration coming from the countryside, obviously Norfolk and I think it’s really refreshing. I have my dad with me here tonight and he will be bidding for me but he does have a limit on how far he can go. 22 PAGE

You’ve been Patron for several years now, what inspired and influenced you to get involved with break in the first place? I wanted to first of all support charities that were local to me and came from my roots. I wanted to support specific and few charities instead of so many that I wouldn’t be able to spend time with that charity personally and get to know the work they do. It was my dad who said about ‘Break’ Charity and the fantastic work they do. I didn’t really know about them so I went to them and said I wanted to be involved in any way that I could and here I am, Patron. Why is this charity so important to you? Break is a very small, local charity. They are not the size of the huge national charity’s that enjoy lots of famous patronages, and lots of money from different sources. They work really hard in Norfolk to stay afloat and to make a difference in young people’s lives. I have visited quite a few of the sites that Break run so I’ve seen the work Break do and I’ve spoken to parents of children who are being looked after there and I hear the same thing, again and again. What they say to me is “If it wasn’t for Break, we wouldn’t go somewhere else to get this service, we wouldn’t have this. We would not be able to allow our children to play like this. We wouldn’t be able

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

to bring our entire family together to have a Break or to go away as a family or have a holiday that we really needed.” Knowing what this charity means to the people it helps, their support doesn’t just reach the children and parents it goes much further than that and brings together the whole family; making a real difference to a lot of people’s lives. The GoGoGorillas were great, bringing more tourists to Norwich, but now they have gone and hopefully going to good homes, what three places would you recommend people visit? Well this first one links in with your magazine ‘Iceni’. Caistor St Edmund, it’s a lovely little village just outside of Norwich and it’s also where I got married so I absolutely love it. The village itself is the remains of a Roman market town and capital of the ‘Iceni’ tribe. It’s beautiful; you can take a peaceful walk next to the River, and just enjoy the surrounding countryside. The second place I would recommend - visit Norwich, the pubs in general in Norwich. They serve real great ale, none of this fizzy beer and I haven’t been to a pub in Norwich and been disappointed by their traditional food. And the last place I would say has to be the Norfolk Broads. I still think that people really under estimate the Broads when they are such a lovely place to spend your time. Especially during the past summer that we’ve had as we have had some scorcher days. Even if you’re not getting a boat out, relaxing next to them is again such a peaceful and beautiful thing to do. And lastly, do you have anything you would like to add?

ICENI INTERVIEWS Issue 07 2013

I would love it if the legacy was that the gorillas were great, Norwich was a lovely place over the summer and at the end of it all, many more people know about the great work that Break does. Following Jakes interview the night began with speeches from Patron Jake Humphrey and the man who is responsible for this amazing initiative and spent two years putting this event together Martin Green. It doesn’t seem possible that over one million people took part in the Gorilla trail around Norwich. TW Gaze hosted the auction and got underway immediately with the first Gorilla Nelson making way for a fierce bid between two hot headed bidders, eventually going for an amazing £7000; setting the trend for the rest of the evening. One of the biggest money-raisers of the night was Mr Carrow, the Norwich city football club inspired Gorilla, with the hammer lowering at a huge £17,000. However, there was no surprise when Freddie the Gorilla arrived sparking up a fierce bid and ended being the highest selling Gorilla. He was painted by Mik Richardson who painted 5 other Gorillas in total. With Freddie being introduced to the crowd with ‘We will Rock you’ and finished with the crowd cheering as Freddie was sold for £20,000. It was fantastic to see the whole of Norwich getting behind Break and showing their support. All in all, the entire auction raised an incredible £272,300 by the end of the night. I’m not sure what I was expecting but this was certainly higher!

April Clayton

I would just like to emphasise the amazing work that Break does. Without Break, these children wouldn’t be able to do the things they do now - They make this possible, they make these family’s dreams come true. Break doesn’t get the headlines or have the support that some of the other charities have. But they haven’t needed it, with all of the support from Norwich itself, Break is really doing incredible things and more importantly, changing lives. Break does remarkable and amazing things so that’s what the Gorillas are here for; to raise some money and to help Break improve, expand and carry on the work they do.

A FINE CITY - FOR A WEDDING Issue 07 2013

“A Fine City” - For A Wedding It used to be said that Norwich had a pub for every day of the year and a church for every week. In 21st Century Norwich, you certainly won’t struggle to find somewhere to enjoy a pint, or, two, nor, a church to be married in; Norwich has more than 30 medieval churches within the old city walls alone, as well as being home to two cathedrals. In the heart of the city stands a magnificent medieval cathedral boasting the second tallest spire (at 96m, or, 315ft) as well as the largest surviving cloister in England. On the outer edges of the city centre, at one of the highest points in Norwich, stands the second largest Catholic cathedral in the United Kingdom. If you fancy being wed somewhere a little different, other notable buildings in Norwich include, the grade I listed, Dragon Hall. Once a medieval trading hall, it is the only known surviving building of its type in Western Europe. Built as a showroom to display its owner’s wares, the building is home to an impressive 27 metre long Great Hall. The hall originally had several beautifully carved and painted dragons along its length. Only one such carving remains today, from which the building takes its name. If you want to host your wedding in something a little more “modern”, the Assembly House in the city centre is a resplendent example of Georgian assembly rooms with a fascinating history. The house as it stands today was designed by the architect Thomas Ivory (1709-1779); used as a ‘House of Assemblies’ for the Norwich gentry, it has been used to host a wealth of events and famous people - so why not join the club? If you fancy a little boutique splendour, then perhaps the Grade II listed St Giles House Hotel is just what you’ve been looking for.

Situated in the heart of Norwich, the hotel is a grand yet intimate venue for your wedding, boasting a number of original features that are beautifully complemented by elements of contemporary design, each one of its 24 rooms having been given a unique decorative feel. Situated on the River Wensum, Norwich boasts 150 green spaces within the city itself, including 23 parks, 59 natural areas and nature reserves and 10 kilometres of riverside walks, all of which can work beautifully in your wedding photography. Just a little further afield, Norwich is surrounded by the beautiful Norfolk countryside and Norfolk Broads, home to a fine selection of old manor houses, hotels and churches. The writer and traveller George Borrow (1803-1881) wrote that Norwich is “A fine city whichever way you look at it” and as such, he is credited with coining the phrase, “Norwich - A Fine City”, I’d tend to agree! For a memorable wedding day, Norwich and the surrounding area are definitely worthy of your consideration, offering plenty of venues and open spaces, the perfect backdrop for your wedding photography. THE COAST ROAD

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Issue 07 2013

THE COAST ROAD Much has been written-and even more said about the infamous M25, the ‘road to hell’ that encircles London. It’s an orbital route that has been designed to avoid the delays and frustration of driving through our capital City by, intriguingly, adding longer delays and ever more frustration to the driver in the process. It’s the sort of journey experience that makes the occasional delay on one of our Norfolk roads seem trivial by comparison; part of the package, the hand you have to play when you live in this part of the world. A dawdling tractor else the bus that seems to stop every few hundred yards, a recalcitrant and long lost caravanner even? All part of the tapestry of the trip and as essential a familiar detail on our route as anything. One Norfolk road in particular that can evoke any and all feelings between mild but accepting frustration and sheer delight is the A149, more commonly referred to as “the coast road”. The A149 is 85.237 miles long and, with the assumption that its origins lies at its most westerly end, can be sourced, like the gently undulating coast hugging river that it is to the tail of the Hardwick roundabout on the outskirts of Kings Lynn. From there, with a few interruptions, it meanders its way eastwards, passing through a bright abundance of Norfolk towns and villages, taking in many a view or place to call as it does before it ends its run along the coast just shy of Great Yarmouth. For many people it part of their everyday life, a vital artery that connects one town to another, friend to friend, business to business, family home to place of work and school. And so much more. One of the most common sights along the road itself is the Coasthopper bus service that runs, regularly from Kings Lynn through to Cromer and back again; a service that suits the road as much as the

Sunset at Old Hunstanton road suits the service. The two are made for one another and its enduring success and popularity reflects that. The first part of the A149 that runs from Kings Lynn through to Hunstanton is a stretch that, following the closure of the railway link that connected the towns in 1969 has, in subsequent years, become ever busier as it carries incoming holiday traffic to and from sunny ‘Hunny’ and all points beyond. The road calls on a number of attractive villages en-route including Castle Rising, through part of the Sandringham estate before neatly bypassing Dersingham, Ingoldisthorpe and Snettisham on its way to Hunstanton where, on the far side of the town and close to the famous Le Strange Arms Hotel, its bears sharp right, passing through the attractive and increasingly popular villages of Holme-next-the-Sea, Thornham, Titchwell and Brancaster. On its narrow and windy stretch between Brancaster and Brancaster Staithe, the A149 passes the site of the ancient Roman fort and settlement east of Brancaster known as Branodunum which now lies, protected, on land owned by the National Trust. This site came to national prominence last Summer when it became the last ever to be visited by Channel Four’s Time Team programme. It was a fitting finale for the programme with the team eventually unearthing an unprecedented 2,500 items including a piece of rare treasure, a long lost piece of Roman legionnaire’s armour. We’re now in the lands of high tides, big creeks and vast skies. Brancaster Staithe and its harbour; Burnham Deepdale and its round towered Church, home of one of Norfolk’s most significant medieval art objects, the ‘Labours of the Months’ font. A few twisting miles further east and we find another of the seven Burnhams, Burnham Ovary, famous for its near two hundred year old windmill which dominates the fields and marshland around it, a

stern sentinel that stands proud against darkened skies and winter gales. The village is also famous for its Staithe, where, it is said, a youthful Horatio Nelson learnt to row and sail. We are now 20 miles south west of our roads starting point and on the approach to Holkham, internationally renowned for its beach, a vast, seemingly endless expanse of sand that has featured in many a feature film, notably The Eagle Has Landed and Shakespeare In Love. The entrance to the beach is via Lady Anne’s Drive which is opposite the Victoria Inn, built in 1837, the year that the young Queen took to the throne. Holkham is also where one of Britain’s most spectacular country homes sits, the Palladian country house that is Holkham Hall, home to the Earl of Leicester and open, along with its large park, to the public. Our road now scampers onwards, great fields to the right of us and salt marsh and sand dune to the left, home of the twitcher and the enthusiastic rambler. Should you be tempted into a sudden left turn and down between the great stone supports that once supported a railway and head into Wells-next-the Sea then you have left the A149 and are now treading the B1105 into this picturesque but slowly changing town, home of one of the best fish and chips shops in England-but no telling, go and find out for yourself! If you prefer to stick to what has now become an old friend, then take the A149 south of the town and on, passing the Wells Cottage Hospital on your right and on until you note a tranquil, small valley scene on the same side, the River Stiffkey its feature as it lazes, much like the adjacent road, its way through the meadows. Stiffkey is the next port of call on this most agreeable stretch of road that also sees the inquisitive traveller pass through Blakeney (“daily trips to see the seals”) and Cley-next-the-Sea or ‘Cly’ if you’re local. Cley also has a spectacular windmill overlooking the marsh and creeks, another towering landmark to tick off the list as you pass by. The very earliest parts of this mill has been dated back to 1713. The road is now approaching the first of the three popular seaside towns that it passes through, these are Sheringham The Quay At Wells

Cromer From The Beach

and Cromer, one famous for its crabs, the other for its... crabs. Both towns retain a great deal of character and are always worth a visit, especially in the winter when most of the crowds have gone and that lazy wind is cutting through (rather than around) you up from the beaches where only the brave and well wrapped roam. But plenty of little cafes and tea rooms to scurry along to in order to warm the bones! From Cromer the A149 emits a wistful sigh and turns south and inland, hugging the coast a little less as it does, the Anglo Saxon town of North Walsham its next passing acquaintance before it snakes, on and back towards the coast that it so abruptly deviated from in Cromer, cutting into the Norfolk Broads near Bastwick. Here it crosses the River Thurne as well as Ormesby Broad before, with golden sands and a welcoming sea once again on its left flank, it takes its leave on the northern fringes of Great Yarmouth, passing, as it does, the role and responsibility of following the coast southwards and into Suffolk and beyond to its bigger, but perhaps not quite so picturesque brother, the A12. The quickest 85 mile journey you’ll ever travel! The casual explorer could probably take a week to travel from one end to the other, so much is there to see, sample and sigh at on the journey. Yet, to those more familiar with Norfolk it can be a joy however often you frequent it and think you know your own little daily stretch. There is so much to experience on the A149, it merits a book in its own right. From Kings’s Lynn, a town with origins in the middle ages, a Hanseatic past and a 17th century customs house that reflects its seafaring pedigree to Hunstanton with its multi coloured cliffs and glorious sunsets; the never ending beaches at Brancaster and Holkham, those delicious fish and chips by the busy quayside at Wells and the ever charming and still, thankfully, timeless resorts of Sheringham and Cromer, the A149 is more than a mere road, it is a paintbrush that shows off some of the very best of Norfolk as it wends its way through our beautiful countryside. And worthy of another look. Edward Couzens-Lake

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No! It’s Super(bar)man… David Hubbard. By day, you may find him hurling himself from planes, throwing himself down the side of tall buildings, or even (and most daring of all) growing a moustache. By night, you will find him behind the bar at the Surrey Tavern, creating towering burgers, selling the best of the best of local produce, and testing his latest cocktail concoctions on unsuspecting regulars.

Although creating and serving local food is a big part of his role, it is also about promoting and selling local ales and beers from the array of breweries in the area. As part of his ‘chief creator’ role, David, with help from his brothers and several eager guinea pig regulars, has devised a variety of shots. ICENI - COLUMNISTS Issue 07 2013

I have never been very good at the whole sport and exercise malarkey. I run like Forrest Gump; have a swimming stroke that can best be described as unique and anyone watching me play tennis would be fooled into thinking there are no strings in my racquet. Above: Keri Beevis

My friends and family are continually berating me, as I work at a desk job and when I’m not there I am sat on my butt furiously writing my next book. ‘You need some exercise, Keri. Sitting around all day is not good for you.’ And yes, they are right, so occasionally I will let them browbeat me into attempting some. 2013 was the year I attempted Zumba. This is the craze sweeping the nation, right? It is fun, it’s energetic and it honestly doesn’t matter what you look like. It’s impossible to do wrong. Well, you know the movie, Bambi? Remember that scene where he’s trying to balance on ice? Now imagine Bambi had the grace of an elephant and the dance moves of Ricky Gervais; then you will get somewhere close to picturing how I looked when attending zumba. After having my friends destroy all twenty-five of my excuses as to why this was a bad idea, I reluctantly invested in a sports bra. Maybe this would be a good thing, give me a little more energy and exercise my mind, which in turn would help my creative flow and my writing. The lady taking the class greeted us, asking if we had any medical conditions she should know about. I told her I was allergic to exercise, had two left feet and no rhythm. ‘Don’t you worry,’ she told me. ‘We will soon teach you coordination and rhythm’. Now I didn’t want to put down her skills as a zumba teacher, but a twenty-week intensive dance training course with John Travolta is not going to teach me coordination or rhythm. So I smiled and did the best I could, wearing an expression on my face like I’d just walked through into my wardrobe and found Narnia. The only thing I was doing in common with the other people in the room was breathing, but I approached it enthusiastically and waved my arms and legs around like a demented octopus, and afterwards I ached in places I didn’t know you could ache. And to cap it all off, the following day I did an excellent impression of John Wayne.

The Diary of a Norfolk Family. By Mark King www.always-hanging-around.blogspot.com Follow on twitter: @author-king The other Saturday afternoon I was driving with all the family in the car. We were travelling to see my parents in Lowestoft and as I approached a roundabout I put the brakes on, and came to a stop. The only problem was the car behind failed to do either and went up my back-side. Well not my back-side but my car’s rear end. I heard the screech of the tyres, and then a shudder, as car hit car, and then a loud crunch. So there we were on the edge of the round-about blocking half the road, but it didn’t seem to stop, or slow down, other drivers who carried on with their journey. My daughter went into frenzy and started to cry, but my son was fast asleep and no car accident was going to wake him up. The other driver got out of his car at the same time as me with his hands in the air saying, ‘I’m sorry, I’m sorry, it’s my fault.’ We inspected the rear bumper and it was mainly damage to the paint work, and number plate. There was no damage to his car. It was agreed that we wouldn’t involve the insurance companies, and that he would pay for the repair to the paint work. We swapped details and then went our merry way. When we arrived at my parents my son woke up none the wiser. On Monday morning I got a quote for the repair and in the afternoon the man phoned me up to find out the cost. He seemed happy and we arranged to drop the payment off at my house on Wednesday evening. He arrived as agreed. I gave him a written letter as receipt and to say it was the end of the matter. So it seems that even in these modern times there are still occasions where an Englishman’s word is his bond and can be sealed with a hand-shake.

Issue 07 2013

Monthly Blog

by Nicole Saxton - Beccles

The weapon that is Education. Numerous Governments for a long time have talked about implementing changes to the length of school holidays. “Children have it too easy, lets reduce the summer holidays,” of course children have it easy, and they should! Being a child are the best years of our lives, do we really want to put adult pressures on four year olds? Growing up means paying bills, Tax, cleaning, cooking - these responsibilities all last sixty odd years, we are children for 16-18 short years, let them savour it. Already children are having to make adult decisions at young ages, at age 13-14 (year 9) pupils are having to choose subjects they will sit GCSE’s in. What if they change their mind? I changed my mind constantly, I hated Geography in school now it fascinates me. Children are having discussions about their future career and are guided to choose subjects along those lines, at 13! A career that you won’t start for 5 years minimum. At 13 I wanted to be a singer I couldn’t sing, but that didn’t matter to me I still wanted to be a singer. Were you going to tell me at such a young and impressionable age that my dream will never happen? That I should concentrate on something more ‘reliable’ more ‘stable’ shattering an already hormone ridden, self conscious girls self esteem. We are constantly being told that teenage pregnancy is high; surely a factor in this is young adults becoming sexually active as children. Are they being given adult responsibility thus encouraging teenagers to take on adult behaviour? Do they have too much adult like pressure placed on them? So how are we proposing to tackle this? By increasing school hours, putting more pressure on them and less free time to be children, this doesn’t make any sense. Adults fixate too much on who is better, who is sitting around and not achieving, are we really now going to turn on our children? I would like my children to have a childhood like my own. Freedoms to ride their bikes, climb trees, disappear for hours in a field, building dens - only to come home when they are hungry. This can’t happen because parents are terrified that a Paedophile lurks in a bush waiting to snatch our precious kids. Maybe the current Government should focus on that rather than giving our children a 9-5 commitment every day. The problem I have with my children doing more hours with less holiday is I want to be the one to parent my children, share their experiences and teach them right from wrong, I want to spend time and mould them into who they will become. I don’t want teachers to play every role in my child’s life. I didn’t have children to enjoy PAGE

36

their first three to four years, and then only see them for bedtime and weekends. If the longer school hours are being introduced to create better results, perhaps tackling the educational problems within schools is a more appropriate solution. Such as: more one on one attention for every child not just the disruptive ones, more sport, music and cooking. Don’t get me wrong, an extra half an hour to the school day could be beneficial to parents, teachers and students. I can also see advantage in students participating in half a day on a Saturday (like private schools) if like private schools they are spent on sporting activities. Competitive leagues between schools in numerous sports such as cricket, netball, hockey, football etc, would be hugely beneficial teaching valuable life skills, creating opportunities for parents to watch the matches on a Saturday would be massively rewarding to everyone. However altering school holidays surely is not productive. As a child I would count down the days until the holidays, without them - school would drone on and on. Children need to rest, I know when the end of term is approaching because my children begin to be tired, they struggle to get up in the morning and are exhausted in the evenings; they lose interest in their school work. The holidays offer a refreshing rest. If they were substantially shortened I feel parents, children and results would suffer hugely thus our education system would be in jeopardy. An idea I have that would help working parents who have to pay huge childcare costs during the long summer holidays, is a ‘summer school’. An opportunity for children to volunteer for 3 days a week, for a few hours participating in some educational activities not available regularly on the curriculum, such as dance, cooking, sporting activities, swimming, singing and so on all ran by the teachers or professional coaches. A chance to socialise and learn a new skill and also break up the holiday for parents. I don’t feel it should be compulsory nor should it be all day five days a week and importantly it should be free! If we want to improve our educational system perhaps we should look at Finland - they rank amongst the top in the world. They pride themselves on offering a high standard of education to everyone, no prejudice put on wealth, religion, origin etc. I know living in England, if I could afford it my children would attend a private school; they offer higher standard of education. more competitive sports, music and Drama activities weekly and sometimes daily. It is also known that 80% of those who hold key positions in Britain went to private school. Finland also instead of increasing time spent at school have reduced it to just four hours per day, but still their children achieve highly. I think this is definitely something our Government needs to consider before they increase our babies work load.

LUCK OF A LANCASTER 107 Operations, 244 Crew, 103 Killed in Action - Gordon Thorburn This is the fascinating story of one particularly lucky Lancaster Bomber’s adventures during the Second World War. Across all squadrons and all of the war, the average lifespan of a Lancaster was just 22.75 sorties, and even less for the front-line squadrons of 1943 and 1944. Seventy years ago, in April 1943, W4964 became the seventieth Lancaster to arrive on No 9 Squadron of Bomber Command - by which time they had already lost 41 Lancasters to enemy action. Of the original seventy aircraft, only W4964 achieved a century of ops, earning herself a special character as J-Johnny walker ‘still going strong’. Skippered by Flight Lieutenant James Douglas Melrose, her Tallboy special bomb was the only one to hit the battleship Tirpitz. During her career, 244 airmen flew in W4964, none were killed while doing so, but 103 of them died subsequently on other missions. This is their story, and the fascinating story of one very lucky Lancaster. Gordon Thorburn is the author of over twenty books, including Jocks in the Jungle - Scottish soldiers as Chindits in Burma, 1944. This book came about when Gordon met the late Squadron Leader Doug Melrose - ‘champion’ pilot of the Lancaster during the Second World War - in his local pub in Norfolk.

KEY POINTS • The story of one particular lucky Lancaster (W4964) and its pilots • Over two hundred airmen flew the Lanc and non were killed while doing so • Skippered by Flight Lieutenant James Douglas Melrose, her Tallboy special bomb was the only one to hit the battleship Tirpitz. Demystifying Twitter So you’ve heard of Twitter but are a bit puzzled on how could it help your business? Article By Paul Kirk - www.paulkirkdesign.co.uk

Well you’ll be glad to know it’s not all that mysterious once you start to explore its possibilities. In fact, once you’ve familiarised yourself with it you’ll wonder why you hadn’t tried it before. Twitter is a social media platform to connect, engage and listen to other people and businesses - think of it as virtual networking. Don’t treat it as a platform to just tweet about your services or drop in the obligatory website url - it should be more personal than that. Update followers on what you’ve been up to, be interested in what your followers are doing, ask questions, give advice, share content you think they might be interested in and likewise share content from other followers too. Be true to yourself and be interesting. People are more likely to recommend you - someone who’s conversed with them, given them advice and become a respected source of knowledge and information, than someone who just tweets impersonally. Twitter is also a great customer service platform, customers are quite ready to use social media to vent their frustration over an issue they’re having, or even a tell people about a positive experience they’ve just had with a company or service. For the company themselves it’s also a fantastic way to show customers and followers how you listen and you’re ready to help resolve any issues they have. Customers who actually get their issue resolved quickly are more likely to become converted advocates for the company and retweet how their problem was solved. Many companies are now using Twitter as their frontline customer service platform. If you’re not familiar with Twitter at all yet there are three types of message (tweet): Public updates are known as tweets, these are seen by everyone who’s signed up to follow your account. @replies are aimed specifically to the @recipient and are designed not to interrupt your other followers. Conversations are more effective and targeted using the @ symbol. DM (Direct Messages) are like text messages are are only seen by the recipient and are ideal for sending people information that you don’t want to be in the public domain of your followers - like a meeting time, telephone number and the such like. Then of course there’s the RT (retweets) this is when you retweet someone else’s tweet to your followers that you think they’ll find interesting. #ff (Favourite Followers or Friday Friends) are a way to acknowledge new followers or friends you’ve spoken to during the week. Creating a #ff generally ensures your twitter name PAGE is retweeted across your followers and seen by their followers.

If you’ve done a few searches or even just browsed Twitter you’ve probably seen the hashtags, for instance #norfolkhour. What are they? Well the best way to think of them is a kind of public bookmark on a theme, topic or interest. Adding a new or existing hashtag to your tweet allows you to follow, join in and be followed on interests or topics that other people are talking about. To see what other twitter followers are saying about something just search the hashtag. Ok, so you’ve got a basic understanding on Twitter now what should you do? 1. Create an account (its free) - Choose a sensible Twitter name. Give this some thought as it’ll need to be memorable and in keeping with your company image. Familiarise yourself with Twitter and customise your Twitter account with your own logo, background and colours. Remember that Twitter is no different to your other advertising mediums and so your branding should be consistent across your printed materials, website and social media. So whats the first step now you’ve set your account up? I would suggest doing a bit of research and find out what people are saying about you or your industry by using Twitter search. 2. Schedule time to dedicate to it - As with any type of interaction you’ll need to schedule time to not only tweet yourself but to follow others, reply and engage with them. 3. Use an App to help you manage it all - Theres a variety of free and paid Apps available to help you keep track of your social media. My favourite is Hootsuite - like many Apps of this nature it allows you to collect all your social media platforms in one place and even schedule tweets or posts across the social media platforms. Using a combination of scheduled and live tweets/ posts is a great way of keeping your social media presence current, engaging and informative. 4. Track your success - If you’re adding urls to your tweets I’d recommend using a URL shortener like www.bit.ly - signing up for a free account will enable you to paste any URL into it and generate a short URL that’s unique to you. Then when you attach this to your tweet and followers click on it you’ll be able to record each click and determine which of your tweets are most popular with your followers. Whatever you do in Twitter make sure that you always try to respond to followers whether their tweet is complimentary or not. Always try to ensure that you resolve any customer issues or comments in a professional and friendly manner and if you follow the principles of listening, engaging and sharing content with your followers you’ll be well on your way to a successful Twitter presence.

Safeguarding Children Online A lot of people are online these days. If anything more and more people are demanding more and more online content and services. This is fantastic and without it, most (if not all) of us would be out of business. But, there are children in the world, and unfortunately, though the internet is full of things that can aid in education and development, and help children with many forms of disabilities, it can also give them far to much access to items that they either shouldn’t be seeing, or they stumble upon just by typing something wrong into Google for example. Most of the modern internet routers, even the ones provided by your internet service provider (ISP) have the functionality to restrict websites, keywords, etc. This can even be done on a timed basis. I was informed that a friends 14 year old son was “face-timing” a friend at 02.30hrs in the morning, this could be stopped by blocking access to that specific device. This can also be done by timing out the device, i.e. stopping access from 20:00hrs onwards. Say you have two children, and they both have internet access in some way or another. Your son may have a Playstation that is used for online gaming, as well as using the built in web browser to view the internet. You also have a daughter that uses a laptop for school work and can search the internet in order to aid in her homework. Each device (Playstation and laptop) has a specific MAC address, which is logged by your router, so it knows what device is using it. Using this MAC address, you can then tell the router which device its not allowed on specific websites, such as “facebook.com” for example. This could also be a “timed block” so that after 21:00hrs you could use the same device but have full access to “facebook.com”, e.g. on a shared family computer.

Jane Hall’s Colourful Seaside Art Comes To Norwich Playhouse There’s a chance to relive those sunny summer trips to the South Norfolk coast throughout November when artist Jane Hall will be exhibiting at the Norwich Playhouse. Jane, who currently lives and works in Great Yarmouth, paints Pop Art-inspired works depicting various aspects of the traditional British seaside holiday, such as ice creams, menu boards, hot dogs, souvenir stalls, amusement arcades and Pleasure Beach rides. Recently she has abandoned the paint brush in favour of the palette knife to create monumental ice cream sundaes drenched in chocolate and strawberry sauce. These strikingly colourful and textural works provide a counterpoint to her fruit machine paintings, in which the precision and technique of her brush work is used to create bold Pop Art paintings filled with the cherries, melons, ‘Hold’ buttons and ‘Win’ signs so carefully designed to lure the punters into play. The exhibition at the Norwich Playhouse comes at the end of a year in which Jane had her first major London solo show (at Reading Room in Soho); and will be the first time she has exhibited in Norwich since she was invited to show her ice cream paintings at the Assembly House in 2011. The exhibition is open daily throughout November, with no admission fee. Jane’s paintings can also be viewed online at: www.jane-hall.co.uk.

This is an amazing feature that so far, 100% of the people I have asked about this technology, didn’t know they had it and didn’t know how to change the settings to enable it. Here at Gizmo Geek, we offer a really cheap service, where we will come to your house, set the router up to allow/ block whatever keywords or websites you feel best to safe guard your children, as well as placing a timed block on the internet access. If this is something that intrigues you then please feel free to look on our website at www.gizmo-geek.co.uk, or to contact us at: info@gizmo-geek.co.uk for more information.

Executive Motoring: First Impressions Count By Tim Barnes-Clay Iceni Magazine Motoring Editor Tweet him @carwriteups AN EXECUTIVE car shouldn’t simply be a tool for getting you to the office or for transporting you to clients. It should also inspire you and make a good impact on others. Shallow as that sounds, we all know image goes a long way in the world of business – and with these three motors - first impressions will certainly count:

Audi A4 Saloon The Audi emblem of four linked

circles will elevate your standing in the hierarchical world of business in an instant. Audis tend to have a less aggressive perceived image than some executive cars and, to some extent, the make is still an enigma. Why? Well, it’s a high-end luxury brand, but its philosophy has always been about understatement. It’s never been about shouting from every rooftop – and that tends to be appreciated by motorists who want motion without commotion. Get in to any diesel or petrol powered Audi any you’ll soon see that the Bavarian based company’s focus is on craftsmanship, fine quality and leading edge technology. The A4 2.0 TDI S line Saloon is no different. Inside, the A4 has smart touches of chrome and high-gloss inlays. Operation of the beautifully damped controls is simple and intuitive, and the black leather seating with the S line sport package is the icing on the cake. The Saloon’s luggage compartment has a large 480-litre capacity - 962 litres with the rear seats folded down, so driving a nice compact executive car doesn’t have to come at the expense of practicality. The chassis of the A4 is striking with its sporty precision, high ride comfort and safety. The 175bhp turbo diesel engine in the 2.0 TDI S line Saloon combines pulling power with efficiency. Top speed is 143mph and 0-62mph is reached in a swift 8.2 seconds. The car’s electronic stability program system further improves handling, and its large brakes – with ventilated front and rear disks – offer supreme stopping strength. What’s more, CO2 emissions are only 120g/km and an average of up to 61.4mpg can be teased from the tank. This means the Audi A4 is made for mile-munching and so, along with its tasteful image, will serve any senior manager who ‘lives on the road’ very well indeed. PAGE

The four-door car has world-leading aerodynamics and an avant-garde coupé shape. With its frameless doors, the mighty Merc features a radar-based braking system, which is able to warn you of an obstacle from a speed of 4mph - and it initiates precision braking when you put the anchors on. Inside, all trim surfaces are galvanised in silver shadow, resulting in a metallic finish. The instrument panel incorporates five round vents, and a free-standing display screen features a black pianolacquer-look front panel and a flush-fitting silver frame. The CLA is fitted with luxurious integral seats in the front and rear, underscoring its active spirit. And, behind the wheel, copious driving assistance systems offer support and reduce your workload. The Benz is superb on the road and will re-ignite even the most jaded motorist’s passion for driving. Its electromechanical power steering offers improved feedback in comparison to conventional systems, allowing you to really feel what the tyres and road are doing beneath you. New Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrid Since its unveiling four years ago, the Panamera Gran Turismo has managed to cultivate the appeal of the Porsche marque into the executive saloon segment.

Now, a new chapter in the progress of the four door, four seater sports car opens with the second generation Panamera, led by the world’s first plug-in hybrid in the class. ICENI - HOROSCOPES Issue 07 2013

Horoscopes Aries 21 March - 20 April

Libra 24 September - 23 October

You may find yourself in transformation mode, especially during the first two weeks of this month. A Uranus Pluto link, along with a Solar Eclipse in Scorpio, may encourage you to revolutionize key areas of your life. Later, the Full Moon in Taurus may highlight your sensual side. Options for travel and adventure may be on the cards too!

Financial matters may come to a head as a blend of influences, including a Solar Eclipse, may be a call to action. There can be many opportunities to make decisions that you have perhaps been putting off. Careful planning and good advice from key people can contribute to resolving these matters successfully, while also helping to bring peace of mind.

Taurus 21 April - 21 May

Scorpio 24 October - 22 November

The first few days of this month may bring relationship matters to the forefront of your life. A Solar Eclipse in Scorpio suggests that feelings could be running high, so try not to do anything you might regret. However, once Mercury turns direct, you might notice positive changes in your connections with others that could be lasting.

Starting from day one, this can be a month of transformation and dynamic gear shifting for you. The first few days are especially important as a Solar Eclipse in your sign, may encourage you to make an important decision. You could get carried along on a wave of change that might bring potentially happier and more fulfilling conditions into your life.

Gemini 22 May - 21 June

Sagittarius 23 November - 21 December

Hang onto your hat, as potent planetary aspects could affect lifestyle and financial issues. A general shaking up of daily routines and conditions around such matters suggests that big changes may be in the air - which could be a good thing too. A flexible and adaptable approach may help you navigate your way through all of this very effectively.

A Uranus Pluto link early in the month may be a call to liberate yourself from values or beliefs which could be holding you back. At the same time, there is a lot of action occurring deep within your psyche which may bring a treasure trove of creative ideas and solutions to you. Watch your dreams in particular, as they may contain valuable guidance.

Cancer 22 June - 23 July

Capricorn 22 December - 20 January

You may be tempted to make a career move this month, which could involve your creative opportunities and talents. It’s possible you may be holding yourself back, perhaps due to a lack of confidence or self-doubt. However, events may encourage you to go for it anyway. You could be surprised at how easily things come together.

There may be shifts and changes to aspects of your social life, perhaps because you as a person, are also changing. A Solar Eclipse early in the month may coincide with a desire to move in new circles. Friends may also move in and out of your social sphere. Being with the right people could positively affect your happiness and levels of achievement.

Leo 24 July - 23 August

Aquarius 21 January - 19 February

A Solar Eclipse may be the icing on the cake when it comes to transformational change in your life. There’s a lot happening, and it may feel like the rug is being pulled out from under your feet. In reality, it’s the warp and weft of your life experience being rearranged for the better. Hang on in there, as a positive surprise may be on its way.

This can be a major month for you career wise or if pursuing a major goal, as powerful influences may rearrange your thinking and your plans - potentially leaving things up in the air. However, if your previous idea seems to flounder, there may be better resources, advice and rewards to come if you’re willing to expand your options.

Virgo 24 August - 23 September

Pisces 20 February - 20 March

Changes to plans may cause a mini meltdown early on, especially if you’ve invested a lot of time and energy into making sure an idea is watertight. If things become completely unraveled, they may reorganize themselves - given time. Try not to resist this process, as a better outcome could show-up for you if you can be open to a fresh perspective.

You may have a lot invested in a travel plan, academic subject or even working abroad. With a major focus on expansion and future hopes and dreams, you may need to revise a schedule over and over until everything clicks into place. Once you get a sense of purpose and where you’re going, you might achieve more than you hoped for.
