It leaves us in debt for every book we sell through Amazon.com. On this book, Quintet for the Apocalypse [which retails online through Howling Dog Press for $25, plus a small shipping charge to the customer], if Amazon.com were to sell it, they would keep 55% of the cover price, which = $13.75, plus expecting us to pay $3.00 shipping charge per book, which then = $16.75 per copy, subtracted from the original $25 price. That leaves $8.25 for us—the publisher—to pay printing costs, binding costs, and a remainder of approximately $0.50 to be divided among the author, editor, misc. personnel, publisher, and so on. Amazon.com is the “Wal-Mart” of the book business—a voracious corporate monstrosity practicing greedy exploitation of its own industry, running small bookstores out of business, gobbling up profits, and beating down publishers to ruination.
