Quintet for the Apocalypse by Michael D. Main

QUINTET FOR THE APOCALYPSE is NOT sold on AMAZON.COM. Purchase it directly from either the author, or from HDP. HERE’S WHY: We at Howling Dog Press have taken a stand against Amazon.com’s avaricious corporate treatment of publishers and authors. To offer you just one example of this poor treatment, on a book that retails for $10 Amazon pockets 55% of the cover price, $5.50, leaving $4.50 for the publisher, author, editor, etc. If this weren’t enough, Amazon additionally requires the publisher to pay shipping costs of approximately $2-$3 per book to ship to Amazon’s warehouse whenever a book is ordered. On a $10 book, that leaves us, the publisher, $2.00, which won’t even pay for the material expense of publishing the book—printing, binding, and so on. It leaves us in debt for every book we sell through Amazon.com. On this book, Quintet for the Apocalypse [which retails online through Howling Dog Press for $25, plus a small shipping charge to the customer], if Amazon.com were to sell it, they would keep 55% of the cover price, which = $13.75, plus expecting us to pay $3.00 shipping charge per book, which then = $16.75 per copy, subtracted from the original $25 price. That leaves $8.25 for us—the publisher—to pay printing costs, binding costs, and a remainder of approximately $0.50 to be divided among the author, editor, misc. personnel, publisher, and so on. Amazon.com is the “Wal-Mart” of the book business—a voracious corporate monstrosity practicing greedy exploitation of its own industry, running small bookstores out of business, gobbling up profits, and beating down publishers to ruination. Howling Dog Press has committed to selling this book without cultural & political pressure or convention— independent from Amazon.com’s greedy corporate practices, independent of the “Amazon Empire”. Please think twice before buying any book from Amazon.com. Support Howling Dog Press, support all independent publishing and publishers who have the courage to sell their merchandise ethically & reasonably priced, directly to consumers, so that the people who actually contribute to the book—authors, artists, editors, production personnel, and publishers, etc.—have the opportunity to profit from all of their hard work. This is the business philosophy Howling Dog Press employs to print, market, sell, and distribute its own books with the long term goal of keeping prices fair for everyone, and having enough return to compensate those who actually bring the book to life.
