T

he building industry has a profound impact on our natural environment, economy, health and productivity. As a millwork distributor, we believe our impact in the building industry plays a major role in conserving natural resources, improving comfort and health in the homes that are built, reducing waste, and reducing energy costs by providing home builders with products that meet the standards for green building.

We are aligned with suppliers that are also committed to green building and environmental practices; pushing them to further develop green building products that we will sell to our customers. Our in-house manufactured products: Cooper Stairs, Captiva Wood Doors, and Crafted Mouldings, are available with certifications by the Sustainable Forest Initiative® (SFI) or the Forest Stewardship Council© (FSC).

For a number of years we’ve been recycling but as we commit to decreasing our impact on the environment we are addressing additional recycling and environmental issues in our manufacturing process and throughout our entire company. Over 95% of our saw dust is collected and sent to a New England pellet manufacturer to be converted to wood pellet logs. In turn we purchase back a portion of these logs for our employee’s use. We recently worked with the local utility company on a lighting project that will save 338,281 kilowatt hours annually and we are a participant in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Governor’s Clean Energy Challenge.

Currently we recycle: cardboard, wood pallets, scrap wood, sawdust, scrap metal, waste oil, freon, metal drums, batteries, computers, electronic waste such as fax machines, printers, paper, and light bulbs.

We believe that small things will make an impact. Around the office we utilize technology by creating PDF’s and scanning documents as opposed to using paper. We are converting invoices to electronic files and emailing them as opposed to mailing. We will continue to educate our employees and our customers on environmental issues and green building.

On June 29, 2009 Horner Millwork was granted Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Chain of Custody Certification by Scientific Certification Systems (SCS). This certification means that we meet strict tracking requirements for ensuring the products we sell as FSC-certified come from other Chain of Custody manufacturers and/or well-managed forests. The certification is another step in our commitment to environmental practices.

ENERGY STAR RATED WINDOWS AND DOORS Sealing and insulating the “envelope” of a home — its outer walls, ceiling, windows, doors, and floors — is often the most cost effective way to improve energy efficiency. A knowledgeable homeowner or skilled contractor can save up to 20% on heating and cooling costs by sealing and insulating.

Using Energy Star window and door products can help earn rating points for LEED, the NAHB Model Green Home Building Guidelines or other rating systems. Note that these rating systems vary with their requirements but, overall, they strive toward similar goals. RECYCLED AND RENEWABLE CONTENT Many of our products are certified to be constructed of recycled content and are eligible for LEED速 credits for Materials and Resources. Trustile MDF interior doors are certified by the SCS to be constructed of 82 percent recycled content.

Masonite Emerald interior molded doors are constructed with wheat-straw based DorCor and therefore contain Rapidly Renewable Content, Pre-Consumer Recycled Content and Resource Efficient Materials. Many Kolbe Windows and Doors are constructed using recycled metals and glass and are eligible for LEED速 credits.
