Kahn Design Group captured the full flavor of the tropical setting with a focus on nature. The color palette consists of crisp, refreshing blues and greens with neutrals. Woods are a pattern play of sturdy strand bamboo on floors, dark wenge on kitchen cabinets, honey-toned anigre, and energetic, multitoned zebra wood. Much like hexagons, squares give a space dynamic energy. Focal elements such as bookcases in the open living area lend warmth to a contemporary style. In addition to an arrangement of books, the

shelves present an opportunity to display treasured personal objects. “Squares are a really strong design element, and the alcove with bookshelves adds so much character to the home’s great room,” describes Lisa Kahn, ASID, owner of Kahn Design Group. “We thought it was lovely to tuck two comfortable chairs with ottomans next to bookshelves for a reading corner. To me, a beautiful room always has a place where you can curl up and read a book, have a cup of tea, sip a glass of wine, or just relax.” Custom decorative finishes by Florian Spahiu, owner of Ancient Modern Finishes, add finesse to the focal centers of the home. The dining room’s coffered ceiling is green Venetian plaster with a metallic gloss finish and embellished with a custom stencil borrowed from an historic architectural motif. When combined with an antique table and a contemporary chandelier, the striking surface delivers a fresh twist on traditional design. The home’s study enjoys a generous courtyard view and has been designated into an inspired workspace for the man of the home. To instill the

appropriate ambiance, Kahn and Spahiu put their heads together and decided that calligraphy would not only be magnificent, but would also capture the essence of a home office. The stencil design on the Venetian plaster ceiling is painstakingly applied by brush and brings to mind the fountain pen and ink of yesteryear. “Spahiu is an artist,” explains Kahn. “We use these unique decorative finishes sparingly in a design, but when we do they are memorable.” The master bedroom suite is a soothing retreat. Away from courtyard views, it favors privacy. The backdrop for the upholstered bed with wood night tables is hand-woven birch wallpaper. The custom Tai Ping carpet uses a carefree leaf pattern of blues and greens found throughout the home. The master bathroom is a getaway that blends cool white marble, sleek contemporary cabinetry, a magnificent antique chandelier and lush tropical views.

A second great room is the open setting that encompasses the kitchen, dining room space, and a family room. Featuring multiple preparation and storage areas, a large island flanked by bookshelves, and state-of-the-art appliances, the kitchen is a fantastic place for creating gourmet meals. With a large island and bar seating, it is also a desirable setting for casual entertainment at any time. The adjacent dining room is larger than a traditional morning kitchen. The family room has windows open to the lake on one side and the courtyard on the other. In addition to the dramatic wood-lined vaulted ceiling, clerestory windows add light to the setting. The family room draws the colors of the home in with a second Tai Ping custom carpet in a geometric pattern. Complementing the tropical views are a generous ottoman upholstered in cork and soft white linen draperies embroidered with a bamboo design. “There is natural flow to this home in the way that the spaces open to each other and the views and the design elements meld,” says Kahn. “On the heels of the Mediterranean movement in Naples, it felt wonderful to create something that is very sophisticated, and almost a bit urban.”

The inspiration for this room came from the beautiful granite countertop I selected that reminded me of the bottom of a shallow ocean floor. It has a sandy background with interesting movement within the stone that resembles the tides coming in and out and an array of earth toned materials. My intention was to create an environment that piques the visitor’s curiosity through a variety of texture, dimension, and materials, in a pure and abstract manner. I commissioned local artists to take this theme and make it their own: Joy Price used an interesting conceptual installation of recycled books one would read at the beach. Susan Dolgin infused her signature encaustic medium with materials found at the beach.

We created an atmosphere that makes guests feel comfortable, tranquil, and relaxed using soothing hues of soft, ocean blue-greens for the medium toned color on the walls. I wanted to keep the feel of the room very soft and clean lined with more texture than pattern, so I started with finding one pattern that I wanted to use. The Jim Thompson fabric was the inspiration for the headboard wall; It is creatively painted as a subtle pattern repeat of this fabric. The other fabrics are complimentary in neutral supple textures. I also wanted to add a touch of whimsy and femininity. A simple ivory walnut writing desk with a clear acrylic chair completes the look.

The guest bedroom in the Earth, Wind & Fire home embraces a Geo design influence. Honed metals, woven reeds, rustic woods, and cotton fabrics all come together in a warm and arresting palette of steel grays, neutrals, and hot orange. Unique accessories are placed throughout for dramatic effect. Many of the furniture selections are custom, including the Queen-size headboard and the metal night table. The focal feature is a headboard wall that combines two wall coverings and painted applied moldings.

Fire is warm and relaxing, and has a reddish orange tone. This space reflects a soothing and relaxing atmosphere with a punch of warm orange. The family room and kitchen is always the heart of the home. This is where you relax after a long day or entertain your friends. This sofa invites you to relax while the fun, stacking, colorful cocktail tables will make you smile. The whimsical chandelier will always be a conversation piece.

Transitional, clean lines, and one-of-a-kind furniture pieces were our design inspirations for the dining room. Featured here is an exclusively designed dining table that is comprised of a solid piece of American Cherry. A barked edge is accentuated by a hand formed metal base. The custom ‘host’ chairs feature rich bronze leather. Three-dimensional, metallic wall panels and the surrounding décor was individually selected to enhance the theme. First growth, hard pine harvested pre-1900s and reclaimed from old barns in the midwest was used to create our unique exterior dining space.

This foyer is an artful space for the homeowner and their guests. As you step off the elevator, you are immediately given the sense that you have arrived in an art gallery. Interesting pieces chosen for their pleasing shapes are used throughout the space. Reflective material in the upper wall panels add sparkle and allows light to bounce. Glass tile is inset in the floor to mimic the ceiling and draw attention to the unique shape of the space. Three pendant lights are an interesting take on the typical foyer chandelier. I wanted this space to be functional, but also unique.

Right — This striking Zen wall captures the Orinoco Flow out of custom cast glass. Being invited into an interior designer’s own home is a privileged experience. Typically, when we see an artist’s finished product, it’s a vision of perfection that was created with a client’s taste and objective in mind. By seeing a designer’s own home, we gain a much different perspective. Much like going backstage in a Broadway play; it’s the opportunity to pull back the veil of the professional façade and see into a master craftsman’s soul. We can see the true root of inspiration — the personal history, design styles and travel influences — from which she pulls her enthusiasm while working with others. Two of the major influences for Joan Simonsen-Hickok are the timeless icons, Sister Parish and Elsie de Wolfe. Known for her genteel, comfortable rooms, Parish rose to fame in the ‘50s as the first interior designer brought in to decorate the Kennedy White House. It was de Wolfe, earlier in the 20th century, whose spunky stripes were America’s first introduction to the rationality of modernism. Since her youth was spent perusing antique shops on Madison Avenue with her Uncle Henry, Simonsen-Hickok will always relate to the classic, while updating a room to current function.

Designer at home Simonsen-Hickok’s home reflects her personal style of beautifully appointed relaxed elegance. Creating interesting combinations and unexpected juxtapositions with accents of varying quality and provenance has become her standard for a balanced composition. “I strive to provide clients with service and style that I would expect for myself,” says SimonsenHickok. A seemingly effortless dialogue between classicism and contemporary, drawn from her European travel, is evident throughout her home, and her clients’ homes. Fine Art While this home’s stately, traditional appearance is obvious for all to see — something surprising awaits those who enter its doors. Careful attention has been paid to each detail of the home’s design — allowing it to serve as the perfect canvas for the homeowner’s extensive modern art collection. This blending of the traditional and the contemporary was a challenge that Architect John Cooney was more than happy to tackle. “My goal was to design a sophisticated piece of architecture that would nestle into a community that was traditional in nature, serve as a backdrop to the homeowner’s art collection, and deliver phenomenal water views from every room in the house,” says Cooney from Stofft Cooney Architects. While the home’s exterior architecture is old Florida style, upon closer inspection one can notice subtleties that lend a more contemporary countenance. “The smooth precast, precisely built metal roof, thin fascia, soffit details, and clean corbels all give the Old Florida style a cleaner look to tie into the interiors.” says Chuck Rainey, Vice President of BCB Homes. Inside, the home’s monochromatic pallet allows the art to take center stage — with the extra punch of unique architectural detailing. An awe inspiring, multiple-reverse coffered ceiling with indirect lighting ignites the imagination, enhancing the homeowner’s desire to immerse himself into the artistic landscape that brings him joy. Aesthetic pieces, such as the rich and tactile stainless sculpture “Looking Down” by Tony Cragg and a beautifully luminous multi-color painting by Peter Zimmerman delight the senses.

The home’s Old Florida architectural style is reflected by traditional details such as porches and large overhangs. The metal roof is indicative of the old tin roofs that were used in the early 1900s. HomeAndDesign.net

Clean, contemporary finishes, such as the piano finish on the kitchen cabinets and crown moldings, can be challenging to implement but offer huge rewards.

The clean white kitchen is minimalistic in nature. The cabinetry is an abstract version of a bead board shaker cabinet but with a modern twist. Due to a lack of ornate detail in the kitchen, lighting both the ceiling and cabinetry accents was an important consideration in design. Two perfectly placed kitchen sculptures by Bill Thompson add a pop of color to the otherwise monochrome space. Another elaborate piece of artwork in the hallway, entitled “Wham” by Beverly Fishman, gives the homeowner a true conversation piece with which to enthrall guests. The striking dining nook features floor-to-ceiling glass windows that emphasize the panoramic water views. High gloss, white enamel wood floors combine with an impressive chandelier from Barovier & Toso to create an inviting space. The fun, outdoor living room with fireplace denotes an air of whimsy. This relationship with the outdoors is what Cooney is the most pleased with, “whether it’s the living room, kitchen or outdoor living room, the house flows very well,” adds Cooney. Colorful and dramatic, the master bedroom comes to life with the addition of a large Marcus Weggenmann Carpet in tones of orange, rust, yellow and green. The dark wood flooring of the study brings an element of contrast to the home. Minimal detailing in the ceiling and indirect lighting bring full attention to the homeowner’s beloved art. “Wood man” by Stephan Balkanhol and a Busan shipyard photo by Thomas Struth amuse and delight — while a Paul Smith rug enlivens the area. The bright, white master bath with freestanding tub serves to further accentuate the home’s remarkable waterfront location. A Glassos countertop provides shine and durability. A hand-painted skateboard by Peter Zimmermann adorns the wall, continuing the artistic theme. While the all glass tile sun shelf with chaise lounges may give the false appearance of shallowness, this waveless pool actually provides depths of up to six feet, enabling it to be used for both lounging and swimming laps. The detached spa, located off the outdoor living room, also boasts an infinity edge with water flowing over all four sides. Multiple planters lead down to the dock below, blending the elements of indoor and outdoor living seamlessly. The homeowner is pleased with his artistic oasis, “I always tell people, ‘if you’re going to build a

Beachside Beauty

Light, bright, and airy, this Barefoot Beach home communes seamlessly within the lush landscape upon which it sits. While the lot itself is cozy, architect Jon Kukk has positioned the home in such a way that one could hardly imagine a more perfect placement. “We tried to rotate the entry so the house presents itself from the street, while also giving the home a sense of privacy, all without sacrificing the priceless Gulf of Mexico views,” says Kukk, Principal at Kukk Architecture & Design. A joint creative effort between Kukk, Windover Construction, Inc, Potter Homes, and Collins & DuPont Interior Design, the home incorporates design applications that make a huge impression on the psyche without stealing away one’s awareness of the awe-inspiring natural beauty of the property. It’s a collaboration that works. “It makes for a better home because everyone has a different perspective and viewpoint. So once they’re all collected and refined, you’ve got a very special project,” adds Kim Collins, Vice President of Collins & DuPont.

In the home’s open living area, muted accent colors of gray, blue, and white combine with natural textures to bring the essence of the seascape inside. This allows the room’s occupants to effortlessly commune with the restorative qualities of the water. A mixture of metals, textured silver and darker iron, adds an element of shine without sacrificing the home’s natural, earthy appeal. The open floor plan, comfortable furniture and scenic balcony create the perfect place for guests to gather, allowing the homeowner to take seaside entertaining to a new level. A cast stone table and gas grill with colorful stained-glass backsplash are both fun and functional. A charming, weathered cypress knee and touches of metallic combined with light and transparent window treatments offer a cozy, natural appeal. The VIP Suite with stately Noir sleigh bed instills the impression of a restorative retreat. The color palette of brushed bronze, warm cotton and subtle blush tones is highlighted by antique mirror accents. Custom vaulted ceilings with applied panel moldings add height and volume to this serene setting. Silver port-hole inspired accents above the bed add a touch of the nautical. Simply Modern An inviting and comfortable home can make us feel on top of the world — and this penthouse condominium with sweeping Gulf of Mexico views certainly delivers. Floor-to-ceiling windows bring each room to life with natural beauty and allow its occupants to become one with the water, aquamarine hues, and orange-colored sunsets. Originally in a smaller apartment, the owners loved the very organic, curving shape of this modern designed Bay Colony building. When the penthouse became available, they turned to the talents of licensed Interior Designer Janet Bilotti to help them create the perfect waterfront oasis. “They wanted a contemporary feel with clean lines and changes of texture,” describes Bilotti, President of Janet Bilotti Interiors. Light and bright, a skylight in the foyer provides a pleasing mass of natural light upon entering. Simple glass accents and beach oriented lifestyle photography greet guests arriving via the private elevator. Twin life-sized Tom Corbin bronze sculptures entitled “Woman Walking Tall” flank the entrances to the home adding a touch of the dramatic. Teak wood flooring throughout lends warmth and richness to the space. The casual elegance of the family room offers the perfect place for entertaining. An oversized L-shaped white leather sofa invites the couple’s children and their friends to comfortably enjoy the large flat screen TV with surround sound. “This particular American Leather sofa is from the Venice collection and incorporates contemporary beauty and comfort,” says Emilio Sadez, owner of International Design Source. Bilotti designed the one-of-a-kind cocktail table herself using large, fabricated pieces of stone that are stacked irregularly. “I like to add something that’s a little unexpected,” says Bilotti. To find the perfect travertine for the project, Bilotti brought in United Materials, Inc. “There is amazing beauty in Mother Nature’s works of art — color, pattern, texture, and reflective qualities — and it’s always exciting to pull together a unique look,” adds Susan Stewart, Marketing Manager of UMI. The European inspired eat-in kitchen features a hydraulic countertop that can be lowered for dining or elevated for use as a serving counter. Everything is exposed in this user-friendly kitchen. Metal shelving under the cooktop allows for easy accessibility to pots and pans. The high quality German kitchen appliances were already there, enabling Bilotti to easily update the space with new chairs, artwork, and a few additional upgrades. The gray Italian dining chairs are made from the ecologically friendly material ecopelle. “It’s a very soft and supple material that feels like leather, but at the same time is very cleanable and low maintenance in every way,” explains Ozzie Pancaro from Casa Italia. Black granite countertops, a glass-front refrigerator, and a dramatic steel hood with lighting complete the look. The impressive formal dining room features a striking, aqua colored glass table — its rectangular top so large that it had to be placed into the home pre-construction. The new owners added their own feel to the room by adorning the area with glass accent pieces in greens, turquoise, and yellows to further evoke thoughts of the sea. This organic shaped artwork, along with Knoll chairs and a stately European lighting fixture, offer a polished ambiance to the setting. Luxurious and theatrical, the steel paneled walls and flush fireplace in the formal living room create an area of distinction. Two tubular-framed, black leather Bibendum chairs by Eileen Gray combined with a Mies van de Rohe daybed bring an air of classic sophistication to the room. FlowDecor lamps add a bit of bling to pick up the chrome of the chairs while

adding sparkle and shine. The glass cocktail table, also from the collection of artist Tom Corbin, has been accentuated by the addition of three reclaimed glass sculptures in vibrant blue. The white 105-inch Desiree sofa is covered with a comfortable fabric and filled with down feathers. A hand-knotted rug adds coziness, warmth, and texture to the space. Restyled Ranch Bringing a 1971 Florida home into the 21st century is an endeavor calling for fresh ideas and a talented design team. When one Park Shore home was renovated, its traditional ranch-style architecture was reinterpreted. Dan and Mary D’Alessandro, a Canadian couple with young children, bought their residence with the understanding that major changes would be required. The ho-hum exterior had little in the way of detail. The interior featured dated design and small rooms. They wanted to go about a renovation the right way, but knew that the architectural modifications would be many because the room design was awkward. Something seemed wrong about walking through the front door into a tiny kitchen, for instance, and low ceilings gave the entire home a boxy, claustrophobic feel. Fortunately, the early-Rutenberg home was well built and came with a great deal of potential. The most dramatic challenge of the renovation, vaulting the living room ceiling and leaving the heavy wooden trusses and connecting metal plates exposed, was Mary D’Alessandro’s idea. “She was very hands-on, and involved in every aspect of this project,” explains Matthew Kragh, AIA, owner, MHK Architecture & Planning. “She’d seen a magazine picture of this technique years earlier and had always wanted to try it. The exposed truss work was an incredible design element that transformed the interior,” adds Kragh. When a ceiling is vaulted and trusses become part of the design, mechanical systems and ductwork are rerouted. The slim cavity created between the existing roof and the new tongueand-groove ceiling was filled with Icynene, an expanding foam insulation. To create the open living area, space was taken from a covered outdoor room by the pool. Clerestory windows in between the trusses add more natural light to the liberated setting. To be an integral part of a great room, the kitchen had to be relocated. The new culinary command center features a large island for food preparation and informal dining. Rooms were reconfigured throughout the home. The only addition to the existing home was a new master bedroom suite. The former master bedroom wing was turned into two children’s bedrooms sharing the former master bath. Beefing up the exterior with a gabled entryway flanked by fieldstone created curb appeal. “We met the owner back when she was considering buying the property, so we worked with her throughout the design process, putting together a budget and completing all of the construction,” describes Mike Assaad, Owner, Waterside Builders. “There were a lot of moving parts to this project, but there is no question that the result is gorgeous. We are very proud of it.”

A Realtor who specializes in design, Linda Sonders found this house, then helped D’Alessandro create the interior. The look is Florida chic with white walls, white oak floors in living areas and the master bedroom, vibrant colors and natural fibers for carpets and fabrics. The kitchen backsplash is a raised, rectangular mosaic glass tile. “The process was wonderfully collaborative with my client,” explains Sonders. “Mary knew she wanted a coastal contemporary interior with pops of color. She also knew that she wanted it to be a comfortable and welcoming home for her children and guests. We shared ideas via email for months and are thrilled with the fun, fresh result.” The home had one guest bedroom. As part of the extensive makeover, an office became flexible space with a sofa containing a pull-out queen-sized bed for a second guest bedroom. “Now we’ve got five bedrooms, which is great because this allows us to welcome both family and friends,” says D’Alessandro. A formal dining room close to the front entrance establishes the new home’s aesthetic with durable molded Eames chairs, a chandelier embellished with delicate capiz shells, and a vibrant painting by

Toronto artist Sharon Barr. “I was walking down a cold Toronto street one day, and that painting was in the window,” remembers D’Alessandro. “It has all the colors of the rainbow and was not suited at all to Toronto tastes, and so the store owners were almost surprised by my interest in it. I knew that it belonged in Naples. That painting made everything come together, really,” adds D’Alessandro. The finished home includes a covered outdoor kitchen with a grilling station and sturdy all-weather wicker furniture for yearround al fresco dining. the home. Adding to the Florida experience, the previous owners had green thumbs, and the home is surrounded by mature tropical fruit trees. The entire project was technically complicated. Because of strict guidelines established by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), not more than 25% of the existing roof structure could be removed, and the cost of the project could not cost more than 50% of the appraised value of the home. “About 25% of the projects that come into our office have FEMA issues,” says Kragh. “In my opinion, this is a model example of a successful FEMA renovation.” This is a happy ending. “Matthew Kragh, Mike Assaad, and Linda Sonders are a dream team,” says D’Alessandro. “We love the home. Urban chic Robert Kleinschmidt takes particular pride in the work he recently completed for the owners of a 2,500-square-foot high rise overlooking Naplesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Pelican Bay. The home displays careful reflection of Southwest Floridaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s regional design characteristics while still confirming the enduring relevance of Modernist design. Most of the classic Modern furnishings Kleinschmidt chose for this project were designed more than half a century ago. Yet set against a canvas of Minimalist architecture, the entire installation looks as fresh and contemporary as anything on the market today.

Luckily, this client — Toronto-based empty-nesters — had no existing design baggage, because what looks great in Columbus, Kansas City, or even New York City, often doesn’t travel well. These snowbirds gave Kleinschmidt free rein to create a residential environment that was appropriate to the setting. The apartment they purchased was essentially in its original state, and needed substantial upgrades, including a new kitchen and baths. But the owners were ready for a completely new living experience and brought nothing from their previous Naples residence; they purchased all the other furnishings specifically for this apartment. They did buy the Steinway grand piano from the previous owner of the apartment, and brought one treasure of a light fixture designed by Philippe Starck from their Canadian home. Certainly qualities like its vibrant color palette in the context of its white backdrop, the informality of its furniture placement, and its overall emphasis on comfort speak to the apartment’s semi-tropical/ coastal paradise locale. The abstract artwork in the home — all done by the owner — creates a perfect compliment to the furnishings. While the quality of the project would suggest a substantial budget, Kleinschmidt points out that it cost less than you’d think, primarily because of his ingenious strategies for purchasing the furnishings. He was able to call on his longtime association with Knoll International to obtain attractive pricing on major pieces like the Noguchi table, the Saarinen dining ensemble, and three different sizes of Bertoia wire chairs. Kleinschmidt mixed these with custom pieces of his own design: the glass slab desk in the master bedroom; the glass cocktail table and “Rockefeller” sofa, manufactured by Interior Crafts and originally designed for David Rockefeller’s Chase Manhattan

An off-white pebbly carpet defines the space while a resin frosted bookcase extends beyond the wall plane creating a sense of enclosure. A custom 10-foot-long storage unit is composed of original parts from the Charles and Ray Eames 1947 storage system and is opposite a pair of Eero Saarinen womb chairs. office, in the living room — as well as pieces from CB2 [the master bedroom dressers and nightstands] and Design Within Reach [the Anni Albers rug and Panton chairs]. Still other pieces are the result of particularly innovative sourcing, like having Modernica construct a 10-foot long cabinet, custom built out of components from Charles & Ray Eames’ classic 1947 storage system. Kleinschmidt, whose architecture school classmate David Zeunert completed the base building architecture for the project, says that his innovative approach to this project also speaks to enormous changes in his field, particularly since the economic downturn of the last decade. “It’s never been harder to practice design,” says Kleinschmidt. “I’ve really had to re-invent myself,” he adds reflectively. That may be true, but it definitely seems here as if he’s effortlessly synthesized so much of the work he’s done in his prior career; this residence is a logical outgrowth of decades of experience designing interiors at Powell/Kleinschmidt, the Chicago-based interior architecture firm he and Donald Powell founded in 1976 after many years A peaceful, serene space of warm gray tones takes full advantage of the spectacular view of the Gulf of Mexico. Two identical white lacquer dressers are placed end to end along with a custom glass desktop for the Mrs. of the household. The master bed has a base and headboard upholstered in an oatmeal wool fabric. A classic armless Mies van der Rohe chaise longue sits in the sole bay window of the residence.

When Powell decided to retire in 2009, Kleinschmidt established his own design consultancy, and has since completed a number of office, hospitality, and residential projects. All reflect his devotion to the tenets of Miesian Modernism. If Mies van der Rohe and his colleagues created something called the International Style in the mid-20th century, the design approach that Kleinschmidt, and the generation of designers who spread the Miesian aesthetic, practices today is an example of a highly refined interpretation of the core principles of Modernism. It’s beyond “international” because its timeless sophistication would make it appropriate anywhere today. Quiet Sophistication There is much to be said about the calming effects of simple and beautiful design. It takes a skillful eye and an attention to detail to design a space that puts the mind at ease and relaxes the senses. Interior Designer Debra Lysy and Architect John Cooney created an interior and exterior that flow seamlessly together to achieve a calm, quiet, and sophisticated look. Feelings of comfort and warmth can be drawn from the glowing exterior of this 5,800-squarefoot residence in the heart of downtown Olde Naples. John Cooney wanted the home to exude authentic Old Florida character and charm. “To reinforce simplicity and the casual mood of an Old Florida home, I used some of the most identifiable architectural elements from this vernacular. Historic Old Florida cottages predated air conditioning so the incorporation of high ceilings, porches and numerous windows was common. These essential elements provide relief from Florida’s sunlight and enhance indoor air circulation. The formal living room was meant to be elegant while remaining casual and inviting. It is a place where you’d love to read a book or entertain guests in a comfortable atmosphere. “It’s all about a balance of the wood tones and painted finishes, which I have carefully woven together throughout the entire space,” describes Lysy. The whites, creams, butter yellows, and sprinkles of coral are all strategically placed to compliment one another. Moving into the dining room you are quietly greeted by the same soft and creamy colors and textures from the living area. A large round table anchors the space underneath a David Iatesta chandelier. The study follows suit with a neutral and inviting color palette. Floor-to-ceiling window treatments draw your eye up to view some of the impressive coffered ceiling details, which were painted to create contrast and visual interest. A cream and celery palette was chosen to create a restful, peaceful, and serene setting in the master suite. The oversized chair and ottoman are intended for reading the morning paper and having a cup of coffee with a poolside view. A special dressing area was created for the homeowner with the idea of a dual-purpose space. Not only does the room accommodate all of her clothing, there is a television, writing desk, siting area, and makeup vanity.

The focal point of the master bathroom is a beautiful Swedish crystal chandelier, which rests above an elegant soaking tub. The backdrop for the entire space is a floral wallpaper accented with tile wainscoting. A mixture of brass, chrome, and crystal finishes were used throughout the space to dress it up and compliment the range of materials found in the chandelier. Tucked away in the back left corner of the home, you will find a staircase that leads you to a spacious and private guest retreat. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The inspiration for this room was the view of the swimming pool,â&#x20AC;? expresses Lysy. This space has a more tropical and playful look than the rest of the home. The color palette is more saturated, and the wall covering is a vibrant and captivating shade of turquoise. The bold color choices are balanced with mocha accessories and natural linens.

This private guest retreat stands apart from the rest of the home with its bright and saturated color scheme. Many of the accessories and furniture in this room were found at Angela Fine Furnishings.

This guest room is thought of as a second master. It features a balcony with views overlooking the lanai.

“Lysy’s creative talents invite you to view each room and experience the application of textures, colors, fabrics, and mixed finishes,” says Vivian Armenti of Henredon. On the opposite side of the home, the second story is inviting, expansive, and boasts three more guest suites. In comparison to the private guest retreat, the color schemes chosen are more refined and subdued. A four-poster bed accented with sheer drapery is the centerpiece for one of the guest bedrooms. The cream and sage green color palette creates a tranquil setting for this “second master.” A smaller guest room across the hall was designed to have a clean and crisp feeling. Bright whites were used to create a sharp contrast with the periwinkle blue color scheme.

“Homes designed in the Old Florida style often have a unique connection to nature, and throughout history have promoted the indoor/outdoor lifestyle of Southwest Florida,” says Cooney. The outdoor living area is an extension of the home that is perfect for entertaining. “It was always our vision to have an outdoor sectional sofa to define the space,” explains Lysy. This is a space where everyone just wants to relax, watch TV, barbecue, and dine. “The fireplace wall was originally plain stucco, and we redesigned it. We found a walling stone from the Bourgogne region of France, and I thought it was a perfect complement to the architecture,“ describes Lysy. “A true designer blends the essence of a project with the personality of its clients. Debra Lysy captured the sophisticated coastal look of the Southwest Florida lifestyle,” adds Armenti. Every detail of this Olde Naples home works in harmony to create a feeling of casual elegance. From the expansive outdoor living spaces, to the open-style floor plan, this residence is a calming retreat that reflects the homeowner’s upscale style.

Stone Age Selecting Natural Stone for Your Home When designing or renovating a home today, selecting natural stone for surfaces comes with abundant choice. The most frequently selected stone is granite, with its timeless beauty and elegance. It is both prestigious and practical. No two slabs of granite are exactly the same, which means yours will be completely unique. In addition, granite is one of the hardest materials on earth, so it is not likely to scratch. Granite is also porous, so it should be sealed with a good quality sealer. Sealing will give you time to clean up spills before they are absorbed into the stone to create a stain. On occasion, you may want to spruce up the shine and add a little extra protection from fingerprints on your granite countertops by using a stone polish. Another popular choice is marble. It is commercially defined as any limestone that will take a polish. Marble in its purest state is white; colored marbles are the result of other minerals being mixed with the calcite or dolomite. Marble, no matter what the color, will usually have some type of veining running through it; the veins are usually different in color than the main color of the stone. Marble is relatively soft when compared to other stones, such as granite, so care should be taken because it can scratch easily and is sensitive to acidic chemicals.
