TRAINING IN METEOROLOGY AND CLIMATOLOGY AT HOFSTRA Jase Bernhardt, Department of Geology, Environment and Sustainability

What? The Department of Geology, Environment and Sustainability at Hofstra University is developing a program of research and coursework in meteorology and climatology! Why? Weather conditions impact everyone on a daily basis, while severe weather events-- flooding, thunderstorms, hurricanes, winter storms, and other phenomena-- can result in extreme impacts and hardships for society. Moreover, human-induced climate change is one of the most pressing environmental issues facing us today. Thus, it is imperative to train the next generation of climate scientists through coursework and applied research! How? Weather station network (Project WX) Hofstra has recently instituted a network of three WeatherSTEM units across campus – Project WX! These stations monitor realtime weather conditions, track longer-term climatic trends, and contain a sky-camera operating around the clock: https://nassau-ny.weatherstem.com/hofstrasoccer Student research opportunities • Historical climatology and environmental history (diaries) • Hurricane evacuation willingness and virtual reality • Local weather conditions and microclimatology on Hofstra’s campus– using ProjectWX data • Long Island wineries and microclimatology New courses • SBLY 104E, Introduction to Weather and Climate (SP 2017) • Human impacts on climate (writing-intensive) (FA 2017) For more information, contact Jase Bernhardt Jase.E.Bernhardt@hofstra.edu, 147 Gittleson Hall
