LALGA SEASON - SWING INTO SPRING by Ruth Nunes The LALGA Season has begun, so grab your clubs, let’s have some fun! You’ll make new friends, improve your golf game too. Here’s what the LALGA has planned for you! Our annual charity event will be held Saturday May 4th and is open to everyone. One does not need to be a member of the LALGA to participate in this event, but being a Member may well give you a greater sense of joy if you help with the plans. Please check out the Feb/Mar Lake Arrowhead Living Magazine LALGA article for more information or contact the Lake Arrowhead Pro Shop. Our Spring Fling will be held at the Clubhouse on Wednesday, March 20 at 6PM pm. Dinner is slated to cost $20. This social event is open to all ladies in Lake Arrowhead and neighbors in surrounding communities. You do not need to be a resident of Lake Arrowhead to be a member of the LALGA. The annual cost to belong to the LALGA is $35. You do not need to be a member of the LALGA to join the fun at our Spring meeting. This event gives the opportunity to meet our Board, as well as current and new members of the LALGA. In addition, the upcoming season’s full schedule will be announced. The LALGA has regular play days. Monday afternoons and Thursday mornings are reserved for the LALGA. The good news about our play days is that you do not need a partner to play. Just call the clubhouse and sign up. LALGA also has monthly tournaments, the majority of which are nine hole scrambles with lunch. Most tournaments are themed and usually handicapped or with an interesting twist so the less-skilled or lessexperienced golfers have an equal chance at taking home the prizes. Here’s the schedule, so you can mark your calendar for the upcoming season.

In addition to our regular play days the LALGA is planning clinics, informational “classroom” sessions and occasional outings to nearby golf courses. Even if you don’t consider yourself ready for “tournament play” join the clinics and come out for the play days and soon you’ll realize the more you play the better you get. The best way to improve your game is to play.

SPORTS & FITNESS I LIKE HATS… I DO, I DO!

by Maury Nunes

Movie aficionados may recognize the above title as a line spoken by Meryl Streep playing Julia Child in 2009’s Julie and Julia. Well, as it turns out, I like hats, too, especially when playing tennis outdoors. I don’t exactly have an aversion to the sun, but I’m rarely happy in bright sunshine, so I am fond of a hat that will keep the sun off of my face and, particularly out of my eyes, the better to see the ball. That said, there are a number of other factors for a hat that distinguish it from merely serviceable to truly excellent. In point of fact, because of seasonal changes in the weather, I find I need more than one hat available to rely upon for this critical need. First and foremost, of course, I want a broad visor that will shade my eyes, regardless of the direction from which the sun is shining. In fact, I prefer a hat that keeps the sun off my face, ears and neck; i.e. 360-degree coverage. However, too broad a visor can be floppy and one that will flop at the wrong time to occlude vision is no good for any sport (except maybe Blind Man’s Bluff, if that can be considered a sport). Secondly, it should be comfortable on my head, not too tight or too loose. I especially don’t want it flying off in a strong breeze or because I run, but I sure don’t want to feel like my head is in a vise, either. On the looser side, I can tolerate a hat with some kind of chinstrap, but those can be a bit distracting, especially if the hat flies off in a good wind and acts as a sail going in the opposite direction with my neck as the mast. Thirdly, I want a material that will work with the temperature, keeping my head warm if it’s cold out and otherwise not making my head feel too warm in any other kind of weather. Along those lines for colder weather, it might have earmuffs or be so designed that it’s at least

compatible for wearing an earband or earmuffs. On the other hand, in warmer weather, I’d like it to let the air in to help keep me cool. At the extreme, for the dog days of Summer, I might even want one of those new-fangled ones that absorbs ice water to keep one cool. A warning on that item, though: I found the water seemed to help attract biting insects, even when I was using repellent. [As an aside, there is a theory, which I understand to be largely debunked, that hair loss can be induced or potentiated by wearing a hat that’s too tight or makes the scalp too hot. Supposedly, at least for me, the cause of baldness is genetics and not headwear, but one cannot be too careful.] Lastly, I prefer those hats that will absorb sweat, but not be destroyed by sweat. For reasons I cannot fathom, it seems hard to find those in a variety of styles and for different seasons, as if one would not sweat in cold weather. Nevertheless, I keep searching and buying hats here and there, because, after all, I do like hats, I do, I do!

COMMUNITY INTEREST

One major area of injury that frequently occurs in homes is falling. Falls account for over eight million visits to the Emergency Room annually in our country. Each year in our country one in four adults over the age of 65 experiences a fall and half of those individuals have fallen multiple times. So, the question comes to mind when faced with such grim statics of how can fall related injuries be prevented in our homes. One way to prevent falls is to strengthen the legs by taking walks (consult with your primary physician to determine the length of walks you should take) on the beautiful trails in our community. Another tip involves talking with your doctor to see if any of the medications you or your family members take have potential side effects of dizziness or drowsiness. It is also important to review your entire medication regime with your primary physician to help reduce risky side effects and drug interactions. Quality vision is another key factor when preventing fall related injuries. The CDC in their article https://www.cdc.gov/ homeandrecreationalsafety/falls/adultfalls.html recommends that older adults have their eyes checked annually and ensure they are wearing contacts or eye glasses with the

correct prescription. Clutter free walkways and staircases can make a big difference in preventing falls in your home. Lighting can also be major factor in prevention of these types of injuries. Taking the time to ensure the high traffic areas of your home are well lit can save you or loved one from the pain of broken bones in the future. Burns represent another major area of injury which occurs in the home. 72% of individuals admitted to burn treatment centers in the United States in 2016 had their burn injury occur in their homes. 33% of these individuals admitted suffered from scald related burns and 9% suffered from having contact with very hot objects in the home. It is important when thinking about preventing burn injuries that some simple tips are followed. https://familydoctor. org/burns-preventing-burns-in-your-home/ The U.S. Fire Administration has some great information regarding preventing burns and scalding: https://www.usfa.fema.gov/ prevention/outreach/burn_prevention.html Some of their tips include always utilizing dry oven mitts or potholders when removing food from ovens, microwave ovens or stovetops and not wearing long sleeves when cooking items on the stovetop. Making the investment in these prevention tips is worth avoiding the long recovery process of dealing with broken bones or burn injuries. Thank you for applying these tips so that those in your home can have a better chance of being injury free.

COMMUNITY INTEREST RED INK??? NO, THE YARN IS RED!!!

by Jill Strickland

Being red in accounting terms – not a good thing. But for Shepherd’s Hook, it was an exciting way to be in January. The American Heart Association’s annual drive is the entire month of February. One of the many items they give away is a baby hat to every baby born in the month of February – it’s their annual Babies in Red Campaign. Shepherd’s Hook took 203 hats to Atlanta the first of January to their office in Sandy Springs. Underway now is the commitment we have made for the last two years to Operation Gratitude which sends care packages to our troops overseas. Hats and scarves are being created by March 1st to send to this group that sends out over 200,000 packages a year. And as always, we work on blankets that go to Northside Cherokee Hospital babies, the Intensive Care Unit and to the Cherokee County Health Department.

This year for something a little different and for skill expansion we’ve added in an additional project to be done for the ladies themselves. It’s a “Crochet-A-Long” where both a poncho and a summer sweater are being done – yes, on top of all the other articles that they create now. It’s a busy group! If you’re thinking about joining - Shepherd’s Hook meets Monday at 10 at the church (you do not need to be a member) and we supply the yarn and fabric for blankets. All skill levels are contributing members of this group. OR – we come to you! Shepherds@Home is for those who work at home and we will bring materials and pick up as often as you need. We are a group who welcomes everyone – don’t hesitate as you think on how your time will be spent in 2019. Come join us! Please get in touch with me or email lashepherdshook@ gmail.com

COMMUNITY INTEREST WOMEN’S ACTIVITY CLUB (WAC) FEBRUARY 13 LUNCHEON

by Gloria Anderson, WAC Co-Treasurer

On one of February’s rare bright and sunny days a lively group of WAC members met at the L.A Club for a Valentine themed luncheon. To celebrate the special day the club staff provided a yummy lunch menu of cream of mushroom soup, salad, veggie quiche and decadent brownies. Guests were invited to bring their favorite Valentine Day stories, and a number of lovely, or humorous, or unique experiences were shared, to the delight of everyone. Favor bags of chocolate truffles and Hershey’s kisses went home with all, and door prizes were awarded to a few lucky ladies. WAC programs are planned throughout the year, and we look forward to having members, and new members join in the fun. It’s a great way to meet and get to know your L.A. neighbors and participate in some great activities. For March 13 (WAC usually meets on the second Wednesday of the month) Tommy Simmons and Sarah Martin-Jones will host a show-and-tell luncheon about purses. Bring your favorite purse with you and tell everyone why it’s your favorite. Sarah will give a short presentation on the history of purses, and purse designer Carole Holley will talk about how she became interested in creating custom-designed bags. She will also introduce her 2019 collection.

COMMUNITY INTEREST READING BETWEEN THE WINES

by Sarah Martin Jones Where the Crawdads Sing – Delia Owens. New York: Penguin Random House, 2018. “Marsh is not swamp,” the author states. “Marsh is a space of light, where grass grows in water, and water flows into the sky.” In her debut novel, wildlife scientist Delia Owens draws the reader into the wild landscape of the North Carolina coastland by creating a central character who is more part of the marsh than she is part of the backwoods town of Barkley Cove. Known by locals as the “Swamp Girl,” six-year-old Kya Clark has watched first her mother, then her four siblings, and finally her alcoholic father disappear down the sandy lane that leads away from their shack nestled deep in the marshland. Left alone, she teaches herself to hunt, to fish, and to hide – evading any attempts to be captured and sent away to a foster home. Drawing her lessons from observations of wildlife, she survives year after year, hiding out where the crawdads sing – “far in the bush where critters are wild, still behaving like critters.” But a marsh can hide more than a young girl. It can also hide a body, or in this case, reveal the body of a young man, Chase Andrews, who is discovered dead at the foot of an old fire tower near the coastline. The existence of his body is first revealed in the story’s Prologue, and throughout the chapters on Kya’s life, his body hovers like a specter. Eventually, 1969 when Kya has grown to be a young woman of twenty-five, the reader has identified with her as she digs mussels or smokes fish that can be sold for pennies to buy grits, or to finds unique feathers of shore birds to add to her collection. Also, like Kya, the reader falls in love with the character Tate Walker, a young local who shares her interest in marshland life, teaches her to read, and later breaks her heart when he leaves for college.

More time passes, and “she’d given love a chance; now she wanted simply to fill the empty spaces. Ease the loneliness [of Tate] while walling off her heart.” Chase Andrews become the young man who fills that void. So, when suspicion turns onto Kya as having a hand in Chase’s death, the author encourages the reader to sit in the jury box and listen to the preposterous evidence that is brought against her. No way can this gentle, innocent creature, who by now is a published author of nature books, commit murder. Like any good mystery writer, the author does not reveal what caused Chase’s fall from the fire tower until later in the story when almost everyone, including the reader, has long since forgotten about the charges. Instead, Delia Owens mesmerizes readers with the fireflies that blink beneath the tree canopy as another sunset lightens the western sky, while the crawdads still sing. My Wine Recommendation Located inland from the North Carolina coast are a number of vineyards that are experimenting with grape varieties that work well with the sandy soil. A popular grape is the FrenchAmerican hybrid, chambourcin. FireClay Cellars in Chatham County recently won a double gold designation for their 2016 Chambourcin. Similar to a cabernet, the wine is aged in oak barrels for eighteen months, which gives the red a deep color and a subtle tobacco and vanilla finish that pairs well with dark chocolate. $22
