COMMUNITY NEWS A MAN (AND WOMAN) FOR ALL SEASONS: BOB AND DEBBIE JOHNSTON

When a storm knocks out power, or a tree blocks a driveway, or a person is stranded on Little Refuge Road, quite likely a gray Jeep will be in route to help. Inside that vehicle will be Bob, founder of the Lake Arrowhead CERT program and together with his wife, Debbie, recipients of the 2018 Order of the Arrowhead. “Their devotion to this program is outstanding,” said Gary Charles, a CERT member who presented the award at the November resident’s meeting on behalf of the LAPOA Board. “Whatever the hazard, Bob and Debbie and the trained CERT members are there to help.” Lake Arrowhead residents since 2004, the Johnston’s spearheaded the organization of a LA Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) in 2010. Starting with a handful of volunteers, they built the organization to more than 125 trained volunteers. “Bob cares about this community,” says Judy Lumpkin, a six year member of the CERT team. “No matter what the emergency, he has our team ready. From ice storms to tornadoes, he plans for every condition.” And Bob’s work doesn’t stop there. For him and Debbie, CERT is more than just training people. He has built relationships with Cherokee County Emergency Management and was instrumental in securing a Homeland Security grant to purchase and equip a red CERT trailer that is dedicated to Lake Arrowhead. He was also instrumental in securing a grant from Amicalola EMC to outfit and train a “Chainsaw Team” who can assist property owners in clearing away fallen trees. “While we hope a disaster never come to Lake Arrowhead, it’s certainly a comfort to know that thanks to Bob and Debbie, we have trained neighbors who can help,” says Charles.

One grateful neighbor is Grandma’s Kitchen, a family-style, home delivery caterer in Lake Arrowhead. The Chainsaw Team cleared trees from the roads so that deliveries could be made in the neighborhood last winter. To keep the CERT skills ever ready, the Johnstons recently coordinated three days of emergency training drills in conjunction with the Cherokee County Emergency Services to ensure that they are knowledgeable about Lake Arrowhead and the emergency needs that may arise in a mountain/lake community. “Sometimes we have snow and ice storms up here that make the roads almost impassable,” says Charles. “Thanks to the Johnstons, Cherokee County personnel can coordinate their assistance with CERT. Bob’s knowledge of disaster preparation comes from his career working with worldwide satellite communications. “When a storm like Katrina hit the coast,” says Bob, “I saw firsthand the destruction that happens when communities are unprepared. I didn’t want that for Lake Arrowhead.” And that gray Jeep that shows up to help pull a driver out of an icy ditch? When Bob was an active member of the Lake Arrowhead Volunteer Fire Department, it was even equipped with an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED). For residents who worship at the Lake Arrowhead Chapel, Bob and Debbie are friendly faces. When the church was conducting a search for a pastor

COMMUNITY NEWS in 2011, Bob who had been serving as the Worship leader, often leading songs with his guitar, stepped up and filled in as the minister. He is also an avid amateur radio operator and served as the Cherokee County Amateur Radio Emergency Services (ARES) coordinator, an organization that can facilitate communication in the event of a disaster. He used this knowledge to set up radio communication capabilities in the CERT trailer (with a repeater station on Pine Log Mountain) and trained CERT volunteers on how to operate emergency radios.

Rounding out his service to Lake Arrowhead, Bob was a member of the LA Volunteer Fire Department until 2017, putting in extensive Emergency Medical Training programs like Wilderness EMT. “Bob recognizes that willingness to help others works much better if you are actually trained and prepared,” says Charles.

Now that Debbie is retired from a career in online education, the Johnstons intend to continue being active LA residents. “Everyone should give back to a community,” says Debbie when asked why she and her husband devote so much time to serving others. “It makes the quality of life better for everyone.”

THE KATHY B. DAVIS FOUNDATION TO HOLD SPRING EVENTS The Kathy B. Davis Foundation, a 501c3 non-profit organization in Cherokee County, is hosting two major fundraisers in the coming months. The organization’s second annual Live Auction and Social Event on Sunday, March 31, 2019, will be held at Lewallen Farms in Waleska, GA, from 3:00-6:00 p.m. This special afternoon will feature music by Canton pianist, Larry Wagner, spirited live and silent auctions with hors d’oeuvres and desserts by Prestige Catering. The KBD Foundation Memorial Golf Tournament, the foundation’s largest undertaking of the year, will be held the following weekend, Saturday, April 6, 2019, at the Lake Arrowhead Yacht and Country Club in Waleska, GA. The Kathy B. Davis Foundation was established in 2011 by Dave Davis in memory of his wife, Kathy, who had a passion for serving and supporting others, especially young people with intellectual and developmental challenges. The goal of the foundation is to reach out into the community and bring together people from all walks of life. Its mission is, “To support and create life enhancing opportunities for individuals with intellectual/developmental challenges.” Expanding on Kathy’s dedication to the special needs population, Mr. Davis has grown the organization’s sphere to include senior citizens and others in the community with a desire to volunteer and serve their neighbors. The KBD Foundation established and sustains three programs of its own: • Special Needs Golf Clinic • Flowers for a Purpose • KBD Foundation Adam Holland Special Education Scholarship The Special Needs Golf Clinic is held each year, prior to the Memorial Golf Tournament and is open to the public. Volunteers, under the direction of Dave Davis, a certified

Special Olympics Golf Coach for Cherokee County, work with area residents who have intellectual or developmental challenges to teach them basic golf skills and a love of the game. The 2019 clinic will be on Friday, April 5, from 10:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. at the Lake Arrowhead Yacht and Country Club Highlands Course. Davis Foundation Adam Holland Special Education Scholarship was created in 2012 in honor of Adam Holland, a courageous young man with Down Syndrome who is Eric Davis’s best friend. It is awarded annually to an area college student majoring in Special Education. In addition to its own programs, The KBD Foundation contributes to the work of other non-profits in Cherokee County and north Georgia. LALGA YEAR END BUSINESS MEETING 2018 This year-end business meeting was more than just the usual year end meeting. It was the final year (of a 6-year reign) of the LALGA Presidency of Eleanor Gibbons. Eleanor was exceptionally gracious in thanking the 2018 Board and the other Boards of her tenure for all their hard work. She stressed gratitude to all for the tremendous efforts in making The Angel House Tournaments such a success. She became truly emotional as VP Jan Garbiel presented her with a crystal trophy as a Thank You from the Board and all the LALGA members for the time, effort, energy and passion she has “put in” to make the LALGA a success. But since Eleanor was still President until the end of this meeting she did not miss a beat and carried on with business as usual, starting with Pat Horlock leading an inspiring prayer. Eleanor introduced Cindy Rincon our only new member to attend the meeting. I suggested every member bring a friend to the Spring Meeting and double the membership of the LALGA. As the election is held tonight all the candidates- Jan Garbiel, Arra Bolding, Nancie Hobby, Deb Bettencourt and Paula Hall - were introduced and thanked for running for office. The final votes were cast. The elections committee, Dolores Bennett, Linda Reynolds and Karen Walker went to work tallying the votes. Events Chair Gail McGurk highlighted a few of the events that are being considered for next season. All ideas are welcome, but in the meantime, she is working on a Maui Ball, Girls Just Want to Have Fun and a few other themed events. Gail did a great and fabulously creative job this past season as Events Chair and I certainly hope she is our party/golf/Events Chair for the coming season. Every year the LALGA has a charity event. The past 7 years the charity has been Angel House. The past 2 years the MGA has cohosted this event with us. Eleanor informed

us of the many improvements AH has made thanks to our generous donations. We all voted for AH to be our charity event for next season as we are dedicated to making this event a success. Many of us know charity begins at home. The MGA and the LALGA have been participating in monthly Highlands Course workdays, thoughtfully organized by MGA President Ralph Lumpkin, coordinating with Eleanor, Uel and chief greens keeper Rob. Course improvements, like freshly painted bathrooms and fewer divots, are due to Ralph and his team, who are all MGA or LALGA members. Pat Horlock presented the Treasury report. Though funds are low, all agree spending decisions were wise. Money is spent on awards and décor for events, end of year gifts and, of course, donations to charity. Speaking of money well spent, Gail did an amazing job creating centerpiece floral arrangements cleverly using pumpkins as vases. I’m sure she worked really hard “cleaning out” the pumpkins and arranging the flowers in copious bouquets. In addition to Gail’s festive décor, Chef John prepared what I would consider his best of many delicious buffets for our events. A few of the highlights were flank steak, asparagus tempura and coconut cake. Elizabeth and her team were busy serving drinks as we celebrated the evening and a few of us were even lucky enough to celebrate our awards. The end of year awards were presented by Eleanor as follows: Hole in One- Lynn DeWolfe and Carol Burton. Both of these magnificent events occurred on the 13th hole. And, again speaking of winners, the beautiful floral centerpieces were raffled to 8 lucky ladies. They were: Lois Olson, Mindy McCutcheon, Lynn De Wolfe, Grace Kreft, Gwen Evers, Carol Burton, Tommy Simmons and Ruth Nunes. Eleanor was also given a lovely bouquet as an additional thank you. As the final gesture, the LALGA members attending the meeting were all presented with the year-end gift of a sleeve of golf balls with the LALGA logo and a pink Lake Arrowhead divot tool and ball marker. It was a fun evening, leaving us all looking forward to next season!

GOLF ETIQUETTE AND WORK DAYS

“So,” you may ask, ‘what do golf etiquette and works days have in common?” In fact, you may even wonder, “What is a workday?” Well, in case you don’t know, last year the Men’s Golf Association Leadership, in cooperation with the Ladies Golf Association Leadership, “put together” “workdays” for the MGA and the LGA to form a “Team” to help Rob and the Golf Course Ground Crew maintain and “spruce up” certain aspects of the Highlands course. Then you might inquire, “What, exactly, are nonprofessionals capable of doing to help out on the course?” The MGA leadership worked closely with Chief Greens Keeper Rob and GM/Golf Pro Uel to set up a program/plan that we the community could participate in helping to maintain the course. The Team first evaluated the course and projects that could safely be accomplished by non-professionals. Next, they set up the work schedule and announced the dates to the golfing community. As expected, within Lake Arrowhead they immediately got an overwhelming response of people wanting to help out. Once a month on a Tuesday morning the Team got together and a lot was accomplished. A wide range of tasks were completed from repairing divots to painting bathrooms. Friendships were made and a real sense of accomplishment and camaraderie prevailed. No doubt, now you are mulling, “What does all that have to do with golf etiquette?" Turns out, the answer is “A lot.” Here’s why: There are some very basic ideas about behavior and habits on the golf course that go beyond just being courteous to your foursome, but also show courtesy to the foursomes that follow you. Yes, repairing your ball mark on the green is both etiquette to other players and helps maintain the course. Other examples would be filling your divot. If you’ve ever had the experience of your ball stopped dead or redirected by a large divot on the course, you know how important that can be. The 90-degree rule also helps with maintaining the course, especially any time we get heavy rain just as has plagued us too frequently this season. Using the cart paths as much as possible, rather than driving on the fairways, even in dry weather helps. Even raking the traps saves time for the regular crew, so they can attend to more demanding tasks. The MGA and the LALGA plan to continue the workdays in the upcoming season. We hope you will find the time to participate. We can all benefit from knowing what it takes to maintain the course and how we can all help during our play days. Off Season Pontoon Boating Skills Verification Workshop On Wednesday, February 13th, from 6:30 to 8:00pm, the KYSC Boat House will be hosting a Workshop at The Highlands Grill. We will cover all the legal paperwork and Lake Arrowhead nautical rules of the road. After this workshop, all that's left is for us to observe your docking skills (which is not a lesson; it is assumed that you already have previously skippered a pontoon boat). This “off season” workshop will greatly speed our skills verification session that is required by our insurance before your first time pontoon rental. To encourage you to come, we are offering this workshop for just $25 (regular fee is $39). Plus $1 sodas/ tea, $3 beer, $4 wine/hot dogs/sandwiches. Doors open at The Highlands Grill at 6pm. COMMUNITY INTEREST READY FOR FUN by Tommy C. Simmons, WAC Co-Treasurer Lake Arrowhead’s Women’s Activity Club (WAC) is planning a year of fun programs and luncheons. The schedule kicks off with a card party on Jan. 9 at the clubhouse, when talented WAC members Barb May, Gayle Matson and Patti Adams and show WAC members how to make an assortment of special cards. The card artists have organized work stations for each type of card and everyone at the luncheon will have an opportunity to make each card before lunch. This is a favorite activity for WAC members and all are looking forward to being able to make special Valentine’s cards for loved ones. In fact, the plant has been so comfortable in our woodland setting, that it self-propagates in the woods making it seem to be a native. Likes partial shade and can be used as a foundation planting. What a wonderful undertaking this has been for the women (and 2 men!) this year who are contributors to Shepherd’s Hook. There have been all kinds of blankets, hats, scarves, socks and some soft dolls made for someone, somewhere in this world. All from residents or resident’s families right here in Lake Arrowhead. All have been handmade and knitted, crocheted or loomed. Countless yards of yarn and fleece fabric have been purchased or acquired from donations. The creativity has been endless as every week there are new things to look at when the articles get turned in. It has truly been a joy – a lot of fun – and lot of skills taught and learned over the year. Can a novel set in a hospice be joyful? Can a book about death-bed letters be uplifting? It can when crafted by the capable hands of Rowan Coleman, whose writing style is often compared to Jojo Moyes (Me Before You). During seven days in a London neighborhood, the lives of seven characters evolve from being stranger to companions, friends, and love interest. Stella, the central character, is a night nurse at the Hospice of St. Francice. She chooses this shift so that she and her husband, Vincent, can co-habit as he struggles with PTSD and alcoholism after losing not only a leg and but also a close friend in Afghanistan. She occupies the long night hours writing letters for dying patients. It is one such letter that gives the book its title: “I am the air, the moon, the stars,” a patient writes to his beloved. “Everything made becomes part of the universe, and everything that is part of the universe becomes us. For we are all made of stars.” Whether the letter’s intent is to apologize, to confess, to advise, or to reassure, Stella faithfully pens them, promising not to mail them until after each patient passes on. It’s a promise she keeps until she meets Grace and hears her dark secret – a secret she feels Grace should share while she is still alive. Across the hall from Grace is Hope, a twenty-year-old with cystic fibroses who is recuperating at the hospice from a dangerous infection. A college dropout, book cover designer, and writer of songs, she is resigned to living her life with her mum and dad, safe from the outside world. Her best friend, Ben, sees it differently, encouraging her to take a chance and embrace life. “When you feel afraid,” he advises her, “go outside at night and look up, because when you do that, and you think of all those other stars out there, nothing on this earth is frightening anymore. Nothing.”

With a taste more like Chablis than an oaky Napa Chardonnay, the wine is light and fresh with ﬂavors of apples and pears. Down the street from Stella’s home lives Hugh – a reclusive historian whose daily routine is interrupted by a new next door neighbor, Sarah. A struggling single mom to a ten year old son, she encourages Hugh to live in the now: “It’s not easy, being in this world. Picking yourself up, getting yourself together, time after time, only for some bastard to whack you back down. But what else can you do, right?” These seven characters are interconnected by a cat. At the hospice, where he seems to know exactly who needs comforting, his name is Shadow. When he is eating bacon at Hugh’s house, he’s known as Jake. And when he snuggles next to Sarah’s son, he answers to Ninja. In some ways, he is the living embodiment of the book’s theme – the connections between people and the universe that surrounds them. Cats live in the now – a lesson that all the characters learn. “This is what matters,” Hugh realizes. “This moment, this present, this life, this death.” The book ends, appropriately, with a letter written from Stella to Vincent addressing, among other things, the importance of
