GOLF NEWS ST. PATRICK’S DAY TOURNAMENT

44 golfers showed up to play in the most unique tournament format of the year. The 4 person scramble format is very common but we add a twist to this event. Each player can only use 4 clubs! The partners cannot share clubs. This added a touch of difficulty and fun as each golfer had to decide which clubs to use and how best to maneuver around the course. For example, most golfers used a putter as one of their four clubs while a few others decided to leave their putter at home and used a driver or other club to putt. The field was divided into three flights and awarded Pro Shop gift certificates to the top three teams in each flight. Using this process, the winners with the overall lowest score were Pat Farrelly, Lee Heubner, James Hatcher and Eddy Woody. SPRING KICKOFF MEETING 2019 by Ruth Nunes The LALGA spring meeting was held March 20th, appropriately on the first day of Spring. Deb Bettencort and Joan Eberhardt greeted everyone and efficiently collected both our annual dues of $35 and $20 for dinner. Our Events Chair, Gail McGurk, decorated the tables with her creative bouquets of flowers, golf ball and 19th hole flag in a golf ball vase, and those vases each enjoyed their own attractive placemats, custom made by Ellen Cahill. To prepare us for the new season a representative from Callaway Golf, Sean, was our guest. His presentation was a big hit as he introduced us to the latest in ladies golf fashions, made all the more delightful with special discount offers. To really show off the fashions Sarah Martin Jones, Kathy Duerr, Tommy Simmons, Lois Olson and Mindy McCutcheon all modeled the clothing. They all looked fabulous. Sean generously gave his models Callaway shirts and then raffled off 3 Callaway prizes. The lucky winners were: Dolores Bennett- Divot Tool, Doris Matter- British Open St Andrews Hat Clip, and Peggy Flanagan who won a Callaway outfit. It's surely fun to start an event with a shopping spree and a great way to introduce our 3 new members, Shirley Kingdon, Tammie White, Debbie Haley, Cindy Rincon and Carol Richards to the LALGA. There was a great turnout with a total of 41 ladies attending the meeting.

Our newly-elected, President Jan Garbiel, introduced the new Board (who, by the way, are off to a good start) consisting of: Vice President: Deb Bettencourt; Secretary: Joan Eberhardt; and Treasurer: Paula Hall. She also introduced Gail McGurk, who remains as Events Chair and former President, Eleanor Gibbons, who now heads the Charities Committee. The new Board revised the by-laws, establishing these two new Committees.Prior to indulging in the tempting buffet, Pat Horlock led us in prayer. Chef John must have thought we had played at least 18 holes prior to the meeting with the terrific buffet he prepared. Since I wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t a model, I skipped the salad and went right to the Lyonnaise Potatoes and Prime Rib. The sautĂŠed vegetable medley balanced out my main course. Also available were baked chicken and rice pilaf. And, of course, dessert! Not just one dessert but three; NY Style Cheesecake, Cherry Pie and Pecan Pie. I did show great restraint by limiting myself to just the Pecan Pie. Cheyenne and Elizabeth did a great job keeping up with drink orders.

Jan got the business portion of the meeting underway, introducing Gail to announce the 2019 monthly events. The tournaments are arranged so that one does not need to be the best golfer to win. It is always fun to win but the plans make it fun to participate. With our current membership, we are expecting a big turnout for the events.

GOLF NEWS Speaking of great turnouts, Deb informed us that play days will remain on Monday afternoons and Thursday mornings. The times will vary a bit with the season. Initially, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re set for 3:30 on Monday and 9:00 on Thursday morning. Regular fees apply. Please call the golf shop to sign up. You do not need a partner to sign up; part of the fun is meeting and playing with new people. Jan encouraged everyone to keep scores for a handicap, which helps the Board balance the playing field for events. She also encouraged members to join the Ringer Board for just $10 and prove to everyone that you are the most improved player for the season. The Ringer Board is used to accumulate your best score for every hole during a season and is a fun, yet simple way to see your potential. In addition, those who play frequently, increase their odds of making a birdie or even a hole in one. With any such success, at the end of the season those might yield monetary awards for the most play days or most birdies. Joan reminded everyone that LALGA dues are $35 and must be paid to take advantage of the benefits. Eleanor spoke about Angel House and the important improvements they have made with our donations from earlier years and their latest needs. Angel House is hoping to do roof repairs and turn a 3-car garage into apartments for young ladies to transition toward independent living. No doubt, Eleanor and her Committee Members, Beth Hood and Lynn DeWolfe, are on the way to fulfilling worthy plans.

NATION'S FIRST STATUE FOR HOMELESS VETERANS UNVEILED IN CHEROKEE COUNTY

Cherokee County is now home to the first statue in the nation to bring awareness to homeless veterans in Georgia and across the country. The statue depicts a homeless male and female soldier to educate the public that homeless veterans make up a large portion of the homeless population. In Cherokee County, there are very few resources available for veterans, but the American Legion Post 45 is helping veterans find housing and stable work through the Cherokee County Homeless Veterans Program. Jim Lindenmayer works with the American Legion Post 45 in Canton and said it is a passion project of his to help veterans restabilize their lives after they serve. "Our goal is to help the vets as much as possible from the first time we find them, through the claims process, to getting themselves back on their feet and off the streets," said Lindenmayer.

Lindenmayer says it's tricky navigating through helping veterans with PTSD, mental health issues, or addictions. The first step the veteran must take is working towards getting clean.

"I'm hoping once I get through this program, and now I'm working at Goodwill that I'll have my life back together again soon," said Phillips.

"These guys volunteered their time or were drafted, and it's time we give it back to them," Lindenmayer said.

Phillips has two children he is hoping to reconnect with. Lindenmayer is working with Phillips to get to his daughter's college graduation.

On top of assisting the veterans in their mental recovery, finding housing and stable work is another obstacle Lindenmayer supports the veterans through. "These guys struggle," the West Point graduate said. "Being in combat is traumatic, but being homeless is just as traumatic for them to be on the street," said Lindenmayer. Army Veteran Jay Phillips said he has struggled with homelessness for the past ten years. In the last few months, and with help from the Cherokee County VA and American Legion Post 45, Phillips is getting back on his feet. "I've got a job at Goodwill," said Phillips. "Been there almost 90 days, haven't missed a day. If it hadn't been for Jim, I don't

"The people who go out there and see it, you start to see the hope in their eyes, they think "lucky me, I could be one of them," said Lindenmayer. Lindenmayer hopes more people in the community will answer that call and help support the veterans struggling with homelessness all around us.

COMMUNITY INTEREST BRINGS COLOR TO WINTER FLOWERBED

Article and photography by Tommy C. Simmons, an enthusiastic gardener I have several flowersbeds located in partial shade spaces, beneath trees and near our house. Someone recommended I try planting hellebores or Lenten Roses in these beds. Since these plants are deer resistant, I bought three at a nursery and placed them in three different spots. The plants grew but didn’t flower for a couple of years, but once established, they have produced abundant blooms every winter. I like them because they bring color to drab beds during the winter and are actually attractive foliage plants in the summer. Hellebores are expensive at the nursery. When you can find them, the plants are nearly $30 each. Kathy Duerr has a flower bed filled with hellebores and she passed along a few seedlings from her plants last year. In my experience, it takes a couple of years for the plants to establish and start to grow. Mine are adding new leaves, but haven’t flowered yet. The plants come in several varieties with different colored blooms. The blooms on mine turn green as they age. I haven’t cut any blossoms for arrangements, but have read that the blossoms make good cut flowers if you place the cut stem in boiling water for a second to seal the cut before placing in a vase.

Hellebores, also known as Lenten Roses, take a while to establish but are hardy plants and prolific bloomers after a couple of years’ growth.

by Sarah Martin Jones The Perfect Girl – Gilly MacMillan. New York: Harper Collins, 2016. Seventeen-year-old Zoe Maisey understands perfection. With her whiteblond hair, pale skin, serene face, beatific smile, and musical talent, “you can almost see the word ‘genius’ flashing like a neon sign” as she sits down at the piano. Her mother, Maria, has driven her to accept nothing short of perfection in their “Second Chance Life” which is why, on a night that was heralded as being Zoe’s brilliant return to the stage for an “Evening of Summer Music,” it is shocking to know that in six short hours, Maria will be dead, and Zoe is, once again, a murder suspect. (This isn’t a spoiler alert. It is revealed in the first chapter.) In The Perfect Girl, Gilly MacMillan (What She Knew) plots a suspenseful story that unravels each character down to the core. Narrated by different people – from Zoe to her driven mother, her controlling step-father, her comforting aunt, her drunken uncle, her ailing former defense lawyer, and her secretive step-brother – the book slowly pulls apart a messy, dysfunctional family who have worked very hard to appear perfect. “When your world explodes,” Zoe says, “all the pieces of it shatter and spread, and you don’t see some of them again, nothing is ever like it was before.” In fact, the power of The Perfect Girl is not in finding out who-done-it, but rather understanding what makes each character tick – especially on this one fateful night. Zoe and Maria’s Second Chance Life began when they moved to northern England to get away from “the accident” – an event that happened when Zoe was fourteen and being bullied. Two years later, after she has served eighteen months in juvenile rehab, her mother meets perfect Chris and together they produce the perfect child, Grace, to complement the perfect children they already have – Zoe and fellow musical prodigy, Lucas. In their perfectly appointed home, Chris manages a successful business while Maria prepares gourmet meals, served always on china and

with linen napkins. Meanwhile Zoe and Lucas perfect their musical talents. As each character picks up the narrative from the previous voice, the story slowly builds, showing just how hard perfection can be. From the first fracture that occurs on the Evening of Summer Music when an irate man interrupts the concert, to the last splinter that reveals just how twisted and mangled each character’s life is, MacMillian ensures that each person has an equal voice in explaining who they were in the past and how their mind is processing the present. But just because a life altering event happened in Zoe’s past, she has gained strength, even during her time in jail. “What happened to me had marked me permanently,” she muses, “turned me into somebody who could be pushed and pulled around, like a toy for other people to play with, somebody without a voice and without the right to a normal life. Unless.” It’s this last word – unless – that turns the direction of this novel and draws it to a conclusion. This, finally, seems to be the book’s message: the need to take control of one’s life. Maria, being dead, doesn’t have another chance, but each remaining character does, that is, except for her killer, whose identity MacMillian, like all good suspense writers, hides until the end. The Perfect Girl may not be the perfect read for fans of murder mysteries, but with its examination of the characters’ inner demons, it is a near-perfect psychological drama that keeps the reader turning each page.

MY WINE RECOMMENDATION Made from a blend of chardonnay and pinot noir, the 2014 Langham Rose Brut is the perfect sparkling summer wine to serve after an evening concert. This salmon-pink cuvee has a refreshing taste of berries and honey. It works perfectly as an aperitif or with seafood dishes. Maria would be pleased to know that it won gold in an English wine competition. $32
