A New Form of Expression Written by: Molley Patrick

I

t is common as college students to scoff at the meaning of art, seeing it more as a frilly addition to the Roland Fine Arts Center, on campus, then an important form of self expression.

Since ancient times, artists have used different methods to depict historical events, daily happenings and even their deepest emotions.

Art is essentially the ability of oneself to create something completely unique that has important meaning attached.

Hannibal-LaGrange University has been lucky to host talented local artists who have displayed an array of media for us humble college students to appreciate.

The most recent exhibit was that of Carol Burns, with a self titled display of ‘A Journey In Paper’.

It is a fitting title for the complexity of color and dimension in her pieces.

Burns received her undergraduate degree from Truman State and then proceeded to earn her masters at California State University.

Burns explained a bit about how she makes her art which includes using old phone books, paper bags and wrapping paper.

She says that you can even find elements of rusted metal from construction sites in her pieces. Burns takes these random paper sources and makes them into pulp which is later cast into the paper forms that we see. A process of burning, spraying dyes or melting wax all can be used to embellish her works.

Burns explained in her artists statement that when she makes a piece, she wants the viewer to see an abstract representation of the subject; that looking at her work should take the viewer on a visual journey in to all the layers of the paper.

She gets her inspiration from nature such as waves crashing on the shore, or animals migrating.

The beauty of her art is found in their colorful complexity, created from something incredibly simple.

To take a walk around the gallery is like taking a quick stroll around her detailed imagination.

The art pops out at you from their neat boxes on the walls, drawing you in for a closer look of the story Burns is trying to tell.

As the great Jonathan Swift claims “Vision is the art of seeing things invisible,” or for HLGU students, it is seeing what is at our fingertips, there for the taking. E

Dr. Lemons Changing the way we look at science, one student at a time

hroughout everyone’s educational life there are a few teachers that stand out in one’s mind who have had the power to bring their passion into the classroom, making the learning experience immensely enjoyable. They are the proud, the few, that students gossip with their friends about and vouch for others to take their classes just because of who the teacher is.

One example on the Hannibal-LaGrange University campus to reach this level of desirable acclaim would be Dr. Judy Lemons. A science enthusiast and a teacher at HLGU for 23 years now, Dr. Lemons is a beloved woman by all who have had the privilege to take one of her science classes.

Dr. Lemons expounded on her reasoning for teaching by saying, “I love teaching the general science to help students who don’t like science and think, ‘I can’t do science. I can’t understand it.’ Well, I can help them do that. That’s why I got into science.”

Dr. Lemons teaches several classes on campus including: two sections of earth science, earth science lab, physical science for pre-k to 6 educators , how to teach science elementary, how to teach science in secondary, classroom management for middle school secondary, and one graduate class.

Looking at all these classes, one might ask, “Where did such a love for science come from?” When science is considered by some as a dry and complicated subject. Lemons’ love for science began at a young age.

She explains, “I think it was because I grew up on the farm, I was the one who spent time with my dad.”

Living on a farm many responsibility were placed on her shoulders in which she could come into contact with the great outdoors where the science of the earth is on display.

Her father was a great encouragement of her love for science, she explains, “Dad made me understand that I can do anything. He was always so encouraging and so supportive. He loved being outside, and some of my earliest memories are of my dad teaching Sunday school outside. I just love being outside, I do, and I love my rocks, and mountains, and volcanos.”

Here in lies the birth of her love for the landscape that lies around her on the very earth that we all walk upon. Now she has the enjoyment of teaching others about one of her passions in life.

Describing her love for teaching, she states, “I like people. God has given me a gift. God has made me a helper, someone who cares about people and teaching allows me to combine those two things: working with students, helping them hopefully, and helping them to love science as much as I do. “ Continued on the next page.

Dr. Lemon’s favorite rock is Sodalite, a blue mineral made from aluminosilicate and chloride of sodium found in most igneous rocks.

I can personally acclaim to the fact that Dr. Lemons does give a brief outlet where students are able to share with her in the enjoyment she finds in science. Her excitability and enthusiasm about the subject rubes off on those around her, and leads the students to enjoy themselves while learning. Dr. Lemons goes to great lengths to apply what her students are learning about in class.

One way that she does this is by taking her Earth Science Lab class out to her house on a rock field trip. Over the years, she has collected any number of rocks that she now has on display in her house. When students arrive they are sent on a scavenger hunt to search for different types of rocks and fossils throughout her home. From the rock fireplace that climbs the length of one of the walls in her house, to several flower beds that contain different rock types surrounding the flowers as decoration, Dr. Lemons has quit a collection.

“Earth Science lab was a great class, Dr. Lemons made it so much fun, and I wish I had an excuse to take more of her classes!” Lexi Ascone said.

Dr. Lemons has also been a major part of the Science Camp held on campus for elementary children 2nd through 5th graders each summer.

The Science Camp has been held since 1993 and each summer Dr. Lemons teaches these children about the how Science can be fun Bringing classroom concepts into connection with the real world and intriguing.

Dr. Lemons has impacted each of her students in a positive way, at her house, Dr. Lemons shows how science can have an impact on and as the years go by she is only loved more and more. our lives.

This is the tentative plan, so nothing is set in stone, or fossilized as it may be, but for many students she will be dearly missed when the time does come for her to move on.

One of the things she will miss the most is her students, she says, “I am so blessed to have the opportunity to teach science to students. When I have a student who comes up to me and says ‘I was at the playground with my little brother the other day and we found rocks and I knew what they were and I was showing him’.”

This is what brings joy to her heart. Her students putting into practice what they learned.

In the end she says “I really appreciate the opportunity to help students appreciate what’s out there. Because people traditionally are not too fond of science, they think ‘it’s too hard, I can’t understand it,’ but if I can help them understand it and apply it to their lives and help them, that’s all really good.” E

Taking a Detour

I

took my plane January 6th at 11.15 am in Barcelona, Spain. It was on time, and that was exciting because we were flying to JFK airport, and the day before they closed the airport because of the weather. The line to get into the plane started at 10.20 more or less, and at 11.40 we were already flying. It takes around 9 hours to get from Barcelona to New York, but this time it wasn’t like that.

It was almost two hours in when all started. A woman started crying and yelling. I didn’t understand what was happening. At the beginning I thought she was having some kind of attack and she needed a doctor. About half an hour later some flight attendant told us that we were going to stop in an hour and a half because someone needed assistance. We didn’t understand what was going on. Of course we were assuming this girl was the responsible of that stop. People started asking the flight attendants what was going on, but they were not giving us a lot of information.

I started getting really nervous. This girl was all the time crying and yelling, and no one was able to relax her. She started arguing with some of the people of the plane because they were complaining about her. It was an uncomfortable situation. The girl friend sitting next to her was trying to keep her calm, but there was nothing she can do. They decided to sit her in the emergency row, two rows in front of mine, so I was able to see her all the time. She started to shake her head and yell to some of the flight attendants, at that moment I thought she was crazy. Don’t judge me, but after spending almost an hour seeing that girl doing that stuff, it is probably the nicest thought I can have.

The worst moment was when she was trying to open the emergency row, this moment was probably half an hour before we landed in that Irish airport. Thankfully they changed her to the row behind, and about half an hour after we got to land in that airport in Ireland. Three and a half hours later our flight started again. When we landed they opened the doors, and they invited her to go out of the plane, but she didn’t want to, so the Irish police got to the plane and took her out of the plane.

We had to stay there for more than two hours. After she got off the plane, I talked to some people who saw that entire random situation, and they explained to me that she was kicked out of the plane because she attacked one of the flight attendants. They also told me that she took some cups before she got into the plane, and that probably this was the reason she was that aggressive.

After she got out of the plane we spend about two hours waiting in that airport in the middle of nowhere. Because of that we arrived to New York about four and a half hours after the expected time so all our connections were gone. I had to spend the night in New York and wait until the next day to get to Saint Louis. We all were complaining because no one can think how the fly attendants are not prepared to deal with this kind of situations.

Now, three weeks after all that happened is funny, but trust me at the moment I was so uncomfortable and kind of mad. I will suggest the airline companies to prepare their workers to deal with this kind of situations, or at least to have a doctor in all their flights so they can give that person something to calm her down. ~ The most interesting part about this story is that she was Ralph Lauren’s niece. Iron Chef

Students team up in a battle of the taste buds Written by: Elizabeth Duzan

or the eighth time in HLGU history, students took to the kitchen to display their culinary skills in hopes of winning the title of Iron Chef.

There were three teams that competed this year, Bobby Flayin’ It, Chow Dynasty and Phi Beta Delta.

Each team was composed of three students and a Fresh Ideas chef.

Bobby Flayin’ It was made up of Beth Miller, Edwin Jimenez, and Mike Wright.

The Chow Dynasty members were Anna Bautista, Amanda Martin and Jordan Johnson.

Jason Helsby, Drew Askew, and Stephen Myers made up team Phi Beta Delta.

The competition requires each team to make an appetizer, main course and dessert, all of which require the use of a secret ingredient.

This year’s secret ingredient was citrus.

The teams were briefed on the rules, told the secret ingredient and turned loose to make the best meals they could during the 90 minute time limit.

After time was up, each team presented their three course meals to the judges, Richard Medina, Massaly Mashburn and Matt Lange.

Bobby Flayin’ It’s meal included a salad topped with mandarin oranges, cranberries, almonds and a lemon-lime vinaigrette dressing, a lemon-lime chicken kabob with lime rice and corn and orange cupcakes with whipped icing.

The judges voted the orange cupcakes the best part of this meal, and Richard Medina said it was the best thing he ate the whole night.

Chow Dynasty presented their food next.

Their meal started off with the “Under the Sea Kabob,” a shrimp, bacon and pasta kabob topped with citrus teriyaki sauce. The main course included citrus, Sierra-Mist chicken with mixed vegetables and fried rice. The “Island Parfait,”

lime ice cream infused with grapefruit and topped with coconut, concluded the meal.

The judges commended Chow Dynasty on how their meal had a common theme throughout and everything tasted good.

Concluding the competition was team Phi Beta Delta and their culinary creation “Fish ‘n Ships,” a carrot boat that was carved out, filled with shrimp, given a pepper sail and some lemon cocktail sauce. The main course was grilled orange chicken with a unique bacon, sour cream sauce, parmesan potatoes and some spinach leaves topped with mandarin oranges. Dessert consisted of an orange cookie and sherbet sandwich with a side of orange flavored whipped cream.

Phi Beta Delta was given compliments on their delicious potatoes and the creative appearance of their appetizer.

After all the food had been tasted, the judges tallied up the score sheets and decided the winner.

The title and honor of being HLGU’s Iron Chef was awarded to Chow Dynasty because, overall, their three courses were the most consistent in flavor and appearance. Bobby Flayin’ It placed second with Phi Beta Delta finishing third.

Beth Miller had this to say about the competition, “As far as my experience, this was my first time competing in Iron Chef. My team was awesome and we really worked well together. Edwin was in charge of the main dish, I was in charge of the appetizer and dessert. Mike had to come later in the competition so he just helped where he could. We couldn’t have done it without all the help from Chef Martin who sadly had an injury during the competition. We wish him well and thank him for all his help! Overall it was a blast and I had such a good time.” E

Jenny and Tyler Bringing God’s Glory to Winter Homecoming Written by: Austin Groshong

n January 18th at 7pm, Hannibal-LaGrange University opened its doors and shed the spotlight on a husband and wife duo called Jenny and Tyler. Originally coming from Newark, Delaware, Jenny and Tyler brought their mixture of bluegrass, folk and pop music to a lively audience as part of HLGU’s first Winter Homecoming. Jenny and Tyler began their musical career performing for campus ministries while attending the University of Delaware back in 2004.

The two then got married and moved to Nashville, Tennessee to start their professional career in 2007, and since that time have traveled all across the United States and have released several hit songs, their biggest being the 2010 single “Faint Not.” The duo expressed to the crowd that evening how much of privilege it was to be able to go and travel the country performing.

“It’s always good to be able to try new things a meet new people,” replied Jenny at the beginning of the concert.

The two were suggested as possible entertainment for Winter Homecoming by Justin and Kathryn Martin who have been fans of the group for years. After recommending them to the Director of Student Activities Richard Medina, the two were scheduled to come to HLGU. “We have been fans of them for five years now” said Justin, “they are our favorite band.”

Doors opened for the event at 6:30pm that evening. As people walked in members of the Trojan Student Senate helped usher in guests to the

Parker Theatre. Both students and alumni were present, and the event started with opening acts by local singer and songwriter Melissa Yake and 2006 HLGU alumni Dan Ware.

Jenny and Tyler brought to the concert a mix of their own style of music. Generating a mix of bluegrass, folk, and pop, their songs primarily focused on bring God glory and made their reputation of being modern day psalmists come into practice. With their number one single “Faint Not,” the duo also sang some of their other greatest hits such as “See the Conquer,” “The Sound of Silence” and “Kingdom of Heaven.” With every song that was sung, the duo gave back stories to each of their songs.

“I really wanted to do a song about Heaven,” said Tyler in regards to the song Kingdom of Heaven.

Along with their original songs, the couple also sang a few songs from their new cover album called “For Freedom.” Jenny and Tyler also mentioned that the proceeds from this album went towards the International Justice Mission, a nonprofit organization dedicated to ending human trafficking throughout the world.

“We really believe in what they do, so that is why we decided to dedicate this album to them,” said Jenny.

The couple also sang many secular songs as well, and the performance ended with a rendition of the U2 song “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For.” Afterward audience members were able to meet the duo and purchase CDs and other merchandise to end the evening. E

Ashleigh Hurd-Spencer The Junior who scored her 1,000th point Written by: Kelly Stutler

A

native of Adelaide, Australia, Ashleigh Hurd-Spencer came to Hannibal-LaGrange University with goals of advancing the tradition of the women’s basketball team.

What she didn’t know was that she would become one of the most elite players in Lady Trojans’ history.

On January 4, the women’s basketball team traveled to No. 3 Freed-Hardeman in Jackson, Tennessee.

Although they were given their first conference loss, Ashleigh scored 10 points, putting her over the 1,000 point mark in her career.

When asked about reaching this milestone, Ashleigh said, “I’m amazed. I didn’t realize I’d done it until after the game. Coach tried to keep it a surprise, and a surprise it was! I’m still kind of in shock over it, but I’m definitely not finished. Although it is a major achievement, I still have a lot of time here in the women’s basketball program, and I hope to achieve much, much more.”

At this time, Ashleigh sits at 1,140 career points, making her 5th on the all-time scoring list at Hannibal-LaGrange.

Looking at her accomplishments over the past 3 seasons, it would be easy to lose focus on what is truly important.

I asked Ashleigh how she felt being one of the most elite players in Lady Trojans’ history, and she said, “Of course, it’s an absolute honor. I want to continue to help advance the women’s basketball program at HLG, by conducting leadership on and off the court. I take my role extremely seriously, and will do whatever I can to improve myself, my teammates, and the program as a whole.”

Hurd-Spencer was recognized for her milestone by Hannibal-LaGrange University after their contest against Columbia College on January 11.

As she reflects on her career and continues to look forward, Ashleigh is reminded that many individuals do not have the opportunity to do what she does, and embracing every moment.

“Knowing that God lead me so far from home to chase my dream is the ultimate drive,” says Hurd-Spencer. “Not many have the opportunity to do what I do, so I am taking this and just doing the best I can.” E

Alumni Turned Staff Students Return as Faculty/Staff

T

he longer that I have been a student at HLGU the more I have noticed that many of the schools faculty are alumni. I have always wondered why they decided to return to their alma mater. For this article I decided to just go to the source and ask a few alumni why they decided to work for HLGU.

“As graduation approached, I realized that what I was going to miss most about school was working as a student in the PR department. When I got the call from Carolyn saying that they’d like to offer me a position, I was thrilled to be able to continue doing what I enjoyed, and furthermore, to be doing it at an institution that I believe in and support. I have been so tremendously blessed to have been given that opportunity.”

Women’s Basketball

The Lady Trojans defeated Missouri Baptist to remain undefeated in conference play. The 67-54 win is Hannibal-LaGrange’s first at Missouri Baptist since the 2008-2009 season.

The Lady Trojans fell 74-33 at No. 3 Freed-Hardeman, handing HLGU its first conference loss of the season.

Hannibal-LaGrange crushed Stephens in a 7250 route, pushing HLGU into a tie for third in the American Midwest Conference standings.

The Lady Trojans fell 59-49 Thursday evening to Harris-Stowe . The loss is the third straight for Hannibal-LaGrange and the first home loss to Harris-Stowe since 2008.

The Lady Trojans lost their third straight road game Thursday night at William Woods. The 72-46 loss bumps HLGU down to seventh in the American Midwest Conference standings. Freshman Sarah Cline came off the bench for Hannibal-LaGrange to lead the team with 14 points and six rebounds while junior Ashleigh Hurd-Spencer finished with 10 points and five rebounds. Sophomore Morgan Winkler tacked on eight more points and five rebounds for the Lady Trojans, but the team’s effort fell short in a 26 point thumping to William Woods.

The Lady Trojans fell for the second time this season to Mid-Continent , losing 69-55. Sophomores Morgan Winkler and Courtney Coulter both added on 10 more points for Hannibal-LaGrange while sophomore Cassidy Trenhaile and senior Rebecca DeRidder led the Lady Trojans in rebounds with six apiece.

Wrestling The Hannibal-LaGrange wrestlers fell 30-16 against Missouri Baptist in their first dual since Christmas break.

The Trojans jumped out to a 4-0 lead after sophomore Brady Sloup (125 lb.) defeated Demargus Gurlly by way of an 8-1 major decision. However, Spartan Chris Padilla won by technical fall over freshman Caleb McElfresh (133 lb.), sophomore Tyler Sonnabend (149 lb.) lost a major decision to Espen Conley and Missouri Baptist earned 12 free points, to go up 21-4, due to forfeits by HLGU in the 141 pound and 157 pound weight classes.

“Brady Sloup started us off on the right note getting the win over Gurlly,” commented Trojan Head Coach Scott Hawes. “We had some frustrating matches tonight though. Caleb McElfresh got bumped up from 125 pounds to wrestle at 133 pounds. He gave up some weight there but still put a good effort out and did a good job of not giving up the fall.”

After its second forfeit of the night, Hannibal-LaGrange began to come back against the Spartans, winning the next three matches to cut the deficit down to five.

Freshman Jeremiah Reed (165 lb.) helped turn the momentum for the Trojans with a 7-3 decision over Elmer Francisco while freshman Grant Godfrey (174 lb.) won by fall in 1:40 and senior Dan Capp (184 lb.) took a 5-4 decision to make it 21-16 in favor of Missouri Baptist.

“Jeremiah Reed came up big for us and won his match as well as Dan Capp,” stated Hawes. “Grant Godfrey though highlighted the night and finished his match with a cradle pin. He’s really come up big for us, transferring in as a second semester redshirt freshman.”

However, the Trojan comeback came up short as freshman Justin Whitaker (197 lb.) and sophomore Michael Wright (HWT) lost by technical fall and by a major decision, respectfully. The final two losses by HLGU iced the win for Missouri Baptist as the Spartans came away with a 30-16 victory.

Track and Field The Hannibal-LaGrange women’s and men’s track and field teams competed at the Snowbird Invite Saturday where the two squads placed sixth and 11th, respectively.

Senior Breanna Newton and sophomore Kristen Garwood led the Lady Trojans with first place finishes.

Freshman Morgan Demczak added on to the team’s score with a fifth place finish in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:04.33.

Rounding out the scoring for Hannibal-LaGrange on the track was the women’s distance medley relay team who finished first in their event. The team’s time of 13:30 was 28 seconds ahead of second place and just seven seconds short of the NAIA National Championships qualifying time.

The Trojans picked up points from freshman Josiah Huff and sophomore Jonathan Huff in the 400 meter dash. Josiah Huff placed fifth with a time of 52.23 while Jonathan Huff came across the finish line in 52.9 for an eight place finish. Jonathan Huff also nearly picked up a point for HLGU in the 200 meter dash, but fell just one spot shy of eighth place with a time of 23.79.

In the mile run, junior Troy Pace picked up two points for the Trojans with a seventh place finish. The Jerseyville, Ill. native finished the event with a time of 4:45.

The Trojans did not pick up any team points in the 3000 meter run but saw great performances from freshman Andrew Daw. Daw came away with the highest finish of the four, placing 11th overall in a time of 9:39.

The men’s team came away with an 11th place finish after scoring 28 team points, just one point away from Evangel and 10 points off of Missouri Baptist.

Freshmen Mattie Buchanan set a new personal record and broke the old HLGU women’s indoor shot put record with her throw of 10.7 meters.

The old record was a throw of 10.62 meters held by Abbie Herrold.

Men’s Volleyball

Hannibal-LaGrange men’s volleyball team (1-0) opened the Justin Brubaker era with a win vs. CulverStockton (0-1). The Trojans took the match in five sets 25-21, 22-15, 28-26, 15-25, and 15-13.

Hannibal-LaGrange (2-5, 0-2 NAIA South) lost in three sets to No. 9 Missouri Valley (8-1, 2-0), 25-19, 25-17 and 26-24.

Junior David Manganiello led the Trojans with 10 kills while sophomore Milos Stankovic closed out the night with six kills and a .556 hitting percentage. Sophomore Dakota Meador led the way in digs with 10 and freshman Trey Biggs finished with 31 assists in the losing effort.

HLGU and Missouri Valley traded eight straight points before the Vikings finally found their way in front, 22-21. Hannibal-LaGrange tied the set twice more but was never able to reclaim the lead, eventually falling 26-24.

Men’s Basketball

Hannibal-LaGrange fell 74-65 at Missouri Baptist in its first game back since Christmas break. HannibalLaGrange dropped its second straight game Saturday in a 74-56 loss at No. 15 Freed-Hardeman. HannibalLaGrange dropped its fifth straight game in a 67-51 loss against No. 3 Columbia Hannibal-LaGrange lost its seventh straight to Harris-Stowe in a 61-58 thriller.

The loss drops the Trojans into last place in the American Midwest Conference standings and gives HLGU its third straight loss to Harris-Stowe.Hannibal-LaGrange climbed out of the American Midwest Conference cellar Saturday afternoon as it defeated Williams Baptist 73-68 in front of a homecoming crowd. The Trojans now sit in front of Harris-Stowe and Benedictine-Springfield in the AMC standings.HannibalLaGrange lost 62-38 at William Woods handing the Trojans their fourth straight loss to the Owls.Hannibal-LaGrange lost 78-58 to Park marking the Trojans’ fourth straight loss to the Pirates.Hannibal-LaGrange fell 83-56 at home against Benedictine-Springfield.
