We stated this journey as five strangers with completely different backgrounds and ideals, studying diagonally opposite subjects , speaking different languages. A team of Architect, Business Engineer , Civil Engineer, Mechanical Engineer and Product Engineer. e clashe in ideals and thinking was for sure invited.It might have look like a problem but we turned it to our strength.We looked at cases, problems and subjects from different perspectives to gain the needful insights.Digged for problems and converted them to solutions.

HACKERS CAREGIVERS

e name of the group is an interesting story. We started pondering for a team name that would not only unite us but also tell the world what we were looking for.We coined the name HACK using initials of group members namely Himanshu , Anders, Camille and Kyle (Jindong). e team was completed when Tadhg was added to the group who gave the ending to the group name with the last letters of his last name Gallagher and ER was added to it. We became HACKERS !

Design Mission “re-design the support of temporarily or permanently disabled or elderly people for the caregiver considering the tight schedule of the care giver.�

- by IHomeLab competence centre Our care giver is a non-professional, family member or a close friend,who could provide regular support to dialy life of our care reciever while staying in their home.

Need Finding What are we looking for in this project

We want to develop a product or a service that can help a private caregiver to look after his loved ones, elderly or disabled people. Interviewing and Observing became our tools to ďŹ nd the problems caregivers usually face. We got the insights what the needs were and what were the reasons for them.

Need Finding To find a direction of this designing project we had to establish a persona and a point of view. e persona and the POV defines our user and the problems we want to help him solve. To find out about the persons we want to design for and there different problems and needs we have made several interviews with care receivers and unprofessional and professional care givers. We have come in contact with this people true personal friends and family, true Isabelle out teacher. We have also met with people we bumped i n to o n th e stree t a n d o n v i s i t s to o ld a g e h o m e s .

Since it's a topic that forces a lot of emotions with the person being interviewed we are not only looking for strait forward answers. To look for and try to evaluate the emotions behind the answers is an important part of the research. Observing potential users in their daily life has also given us important insights.

Insights To begin with we have learned that it is a complicated and demanding task to do the needfinding within a topic and a place which you are not familiar with. e lack of personal contacts, the language and that we are unfamiliar to the persons we meet makes it harder to get the information and insights we are looking for. e following pages are examples from some of the interviews made. Based upon these interviews we designed the persona and the POV. e conclusions made out of the interviews can accordingly be seen under those two capers.

Some of the interviews made Interview with my mother (One of the group members) I interviewed my mother about taking care of my grandmother. My grandmother passed away several years ago. When my grandmother was very old, she could not talk and she could not move, which made her need others' help nearly on everything. My mother took care of her for months.

When I asked my mother about that, I could feel my mother was very painful and sad. My mother said it was really hard to communicate with my grandmother, which made it super hard to know what my grandmother really needed.

A man in the train – caretaker"I'm 62 years old. I'm actually have no job and no money because I was fired for economic crisis and other reasons two years ago. However, I am trying to find a job but it is difficult to find a job when you're older.I love sport, and I have a very good health. I practise hike six hours per week.”

A woman in the train – caretaker"I'm just retired and I'm happy to be able to relax. A perfect day for me is to be active, see friends, and make people happy. Sometimes I also like have time for myself. I practise hike, swimming and gymnastics. Her principales difficulties is her husband. In fact, he's not very active and stop her from being as active as she could be.

Caregivers-My mother cannot walk alone. I always have to hold her when she want to stand up. When she is falling down, this hurt me because I have to call the ambulance. She can communicate slowly, but she can't see very well. My objective is to make my mother happy even if sometimes its difficult.

He has to take care of her and communicate together.He also has to be understanding and patient to have good relationships. In fact, Margaret is old and so she can't understand everything

As designer, it is necessary to get deep understanding of our users. To ďŹ nd a direction of the design a persona is established. e persona helps to deďŹ ne the user and the needs we are designing for.At the beginning of the project the vision of our persona was unclear. We designed a pesona called Margaret. She is an old lady who needs the support from her loved once to cope with the everyday life. Later on, after discussing the choice of the persona back and forth and after getting feedback from the experts we came to the desertion to make a new persona called Martin. Martin is actually the son of Margaret who takes care of her and helps her through her daily life. e work with Margaret though, was not meaningless, it gave us a great insight on the care reciever.

Margaret is 70++ years old. She lives alone at home. Problems that comes with the age such as mobility, balance, communication, self-insuďŹƒciency, sight, and hearing bothers her. ere is fears, in her heart, about loneliness, falling, depression, physical and mental pain, also boredom. Luckily, she has a son, Martin who helps her as much as he can manage. Margaret loves to see her son but she isn't really comfortable with him taking care of

On the opposite street of Margret's home there is this very nice neighbour that use to check up on her from time to time and Martin has made sure that a homecare company help her with the heavier stu that she can't manage her selves anymore.

Martin is 44 years old, living with three kids and a wife. He works a lot but whenever he gets time of he wish to 44 spend it with his kids and wife or doing his hobbies climbing and skiing. Martin has a mother called Margaret. He always worries about her because the last years her life has not been that Needs help easy. Martin really care for his mother with care and o course he wants to be a good taking son, and take care of his mother as well as he can manage. ere is some

Martin obstacles in his life thoe, he has a family to take kare of and he has to work. He never seams to have time enough. e distance is also a problem, just to get home till Margaret will take him an hour by car. Martin has organiced so that Spitex can help Margaret with the tasks she can't manage and a friend of the family witch lives nearby Margaret use to check upon her from time to time. is makes Martins life a little bit easyer but this still requires a lot of planning and organizing witch can be really stressful for him. away from his mother, and the distance makes it really hard to communicate emotionally and take care of his mother.

Humans aren't as good as we should be in our capacity to empathize with feelings and thoughts of others, be they humans or other animals on Earth. So maybe part of our formal education should be training in empathy. Imagine how dierent the world would be if, in fact, that were 'reading, writing, arithmetic, empathy.'

To learn more about the needs of our user we designed a CEP, a Critical Experience Prototype. A CEP can be a traditional test of the functionality of a device as well as a activity that gives the involved a new experience. Sins we at this time had a focus on communication problems between the caretaker and caregiver we designed sort of a game where people could experience problem with communication.

is was two of the comments we got from the participants of this game who pinpointed the most important insights we got from our CEP. It is really important that the communication is accurate and that you get the message in the right time. Otherwise a device that is supposed to help might just harm. It is also important not to use only one of the human senses in the development of a communication device, but instead try to implement a couple or all of them in some way.

Experiencing e game contained a task, to lead a blindfolded person, Anders, to a specific location only buy speaking to him. To simulate communication issues we used the language barrier as the critical problem. e persons who took part in the test could not speak English to Anders but he or she could use another person as a translator. To make the test more interesting we made different directions for the translator in different tests. In some of the tests the translator could also use physical touch to guide the blindfolded person.

Bench marking provides an inventory of creative changes that others have enacted.

To get an overview of the current market, other devices or services that serves the same purpose as the product we are designing we did some benchmarking. We search for current solutions and inovations because we don't want to invent the weel again. We also looked at produckts and solutions that was a bit out of topic to give us inspiration in our design search.

Benchmarking and Images Once we had completed the POVs and received our insights from the interviews we could now start looking into the market in order to see what was out there in the market. e reason we do this is to inspire creativity and also make sure we are not inventing a product that is already in the market.

We got information from a lot of places, the Ihome lab visit was fantastic inspiration and benchmarking.

While there we got the opportunity to see the future of the home and we saw that the elderly demographic was being targeted in this area of innovation there was a lot of connection with the house and the emergency services. is was a interesting improvement on the house that would provide safety and peace of mind for the care giver as they are usually not able to be around all of the time. We also scanned the on line market and found out a lot about the existing products on the market. is showed us the direction in which the market was going and continued to tickle our creative taste buds.

We emailed big sellers in the market and looked at their websites in detail, also we went into the local retirement home near me and checked out their services. e pictures are listed below:

is is exactly what we are trying to prevent but it is actually a smart carpet that senses when someone has fallen and identiďŹ es the emergency services.

A device which helps people on and o the toilet where visits to this get more and more frequent as the years pass by.

Products which provide the user with a means to which you could alert your relatives and the emergency services if you were in trouble.

Although we realize that there was huge problems with this regarding the stigma involved with using the device, people have reported it as an admission of being old.

Inspirational Products:simplicity

e prototyping has been an important part of our project to learn about the andvantages and improvements neaded in an idea. A critical function prototype is crated to test a surtain important experience a product will deliver. Prototyping, the act of creating an original model as a foundation for the end product, is an essential and efficient part of the game design process. It allows us to find out quickly what does and does not work which saves us time and money. It’s the time, before the game design has gone too far, when we set the rules and find the fun. Rapid prototyping saves money by letting us make less-costly mistakes early on and allowing us to bail on bad ideas much earlier in the process. It also teaches us about the game, making it easier to formulate project pitches and press releases.

Our idea at this state of the project is to build a pill sorting device. is device are meant to help elderly people to sort all the dierent pills taken daily. Usually this is done by hand by the person taking the pills or by a caregiver. Our machine though is more than just an organiser, it is supposed to be abel to remind the user when to take the pills by an alarm.

When the pills are taken it should also tell the caregiver that this has been done. So now our persona, Martin the caregiving son, has one thing less to worry about and so on a little bit easier life.

Our test senario changed because we could not ďŹ nd anyone who was interested in helping us testing this device. So instead we introduced the prototype to Patrick, the man who inspired us for our persona Martin. We told him about the idea and got a lot of good insights on it.

Feedbacks

e positive feedback was on the reminder alarm and especially the control function witch tells the caretaker that the pills has been taken. ings to improve is to make it a simpler device and especially to make it trustworthy. e device must give the impression of being as trustworthy as a human, for bought the care reciver and the care givers peace of mind. at's the critical challenge with this device and after learning this we come to the conclution to surch for other ways of helping Martin with his hectically life.

Every one of us have things that we believe about ourselves when nobody else is looking, nobody else is listening, nobody else is monitoring what we're doing. We believe things about ourself.

To make our persona Martins life a little bit easier we wanted to give him the opportunity to easy se what is going on in the life of his mother. is is made possible by a tracking device which shows him the position of his mother. is way he will be able to follow her daily activities from a distance and he can plan his life better due to his mother's activities. is device can also be very usefull if she while growing older lose her memory. It will make it easier to ďŹ nd her if she gets lost and this may create a feeling of security for bought Martin and his mother

Testing By illustrating the GPRS position with a simple SMS we tested the feeling of being watched and watch. To make the test easy we took help by some friends, couples who was geographically separated.

We chose couples because we wanted persons who really cared for each other. One of the persons “ e feeling of being watched is something our test persons did not like.”

P eo p le rea lly d o n ' t wa n t to b e constantly watched and we are not willing to be updated all the time either.So to get further with the GPRS we have to improve it in some way. With the experience from the testing in mind a good alternative might be to only get a position when you ask for it. is might solve the receivers problems cause he won't be annoyed by the notice but the feeling of security is still left. On the other hand this does not solve the problem of the feeling of being watched.

We have to think more about this for further development of this product.

“I was writing on my thesis and the message with the position disturbed me” one of our test persons commented. Maybe he got kind of interested due to the message and had a hard time not thinking about it, so he could not concentrate on writing.”

Reactions

were told to send an SMS every two hours for two days to his or her loved one telling about their position. What our friends learned us from this testing was that it was really annoying to be watched all the time. To get a message with the position was also that a really annoying . “It made them feel unease.Only a monitoring which is not so direct could be used�

Fridgewatch

To test the fridge tracker we decided to take photos of our fridges for two weeks. Using two camera mounts we could hold the camera inside the fridge and take the photos. ere had to be a lot of explaining done to our flatmates but they understood.

After 2 weeks we concluded that it was very difficult to determine what was in the fridge even with two cameras. We concluded that we should use a fish eye lens to get a wider angle of the inside of the fridge.

is idea consists of a video camera which captures a photo displaying the contents of the care takers fridge. is image is then analysed and sent to the care givers phone displaying wither the care taker needs food and wither he/she is eating well. is product can be used to bring the family together in helping and being satisďŹ ed that there doing their part in looking after their parents. It was brought up that this could bring problems but if the jobs were outlined by the organiser to a consensus then there would be no confusion and the family could enjoy spending time with their parents. ere is a lot of scope for improving this product by including possible recipes that can be cooked with the contents of the fridge. Also the app can be connected with the local food store and when food is needed martin can send it with a tap of a ďŹ nger.

e most important thing in communication is hearing what isn't being said. e art of reading between the lines is a life long quest of the wise

For our dark horse prototype we decided to make an easy to use functional tablet device which was used solely for Skype. We came up with the design that I should be in the form of a book so as to be easy to use. e problems that we predicted while doing this prototype were that the elderly might ďŹ nd it hard to ďŹ nd themselves in the screen so one side of the book would be a picture of the caller and the other side would be of the person being called. We made a quick cardboard prototype and brought it down to our local retirement home to test.

e concept of the design lies in the theme of dark horse prototype to introduce technology to elderly people and make the comm8unication easier for them face to face. e holders of the chat pad are also redesigned for the ease of talking. is enables them to hold it properly without much trouble.

Testing

To test this we went to the retirement home (with a translator) with our questions prepared and our prototype made we sat down with a few couples (care giver and taker relationship) had a chat about our project, their daily problems in order continue learning about our users. We were unable to test the skype properly as there was no wiďŹ connectivity in the area. So we talked with people to see what they thought of the product. e results were mixed, everyone we asked said it was a good idea and a good product but they thought that people of that generation would not be able to adapt to the product.

Feedback e acceptance for using modern devices is still a challenge for elderly. ey ďŹ nd it unwanted and complicated. Also the prefer personal communication .

Feedback on Presentation I We were lucky to get such great feedback on our presentation. Our group has been the grey area of direction since the start. is caused us to look at the other teams and see them striding forward with certainty and feel unsatisfied with our work. From the feedback we got some great reassurance and perspective on the project. Before we hadn't realised that our task is quite hard because there were so many problems to solve, from so many different clients to be thought of. Also there is a lot of personal emotional experiences within the group and the interviewees which can cloud judgment. e panel told us that we must decide that day which persona we were going to focus on. We were all happy to get this done even though it was difficult to do.

We got some great feedback on our teambuilding which was very important as even though you might know how to get a better team dynamic sometimes you need to be told to get something done, as a result Tadhg is hosting the team for a dinner on Sunday night. We managed to hit our problems head on and one thing that came up was attendance to early morning meetings suited some less than others so, we came to the solution that one member of the team drove his car to college and he could pick us up. is was a great solution to the problem. Overall we got so much out of the feedback it was invaluable, our team is now working better and we have a direction and focus.

Here you are Margeret: thanks Martin: wait you're supposed to eat before taking these pills. Hold on, I can grab something from the fridge.

Margeret: Ahh no I'm not that hungry.

Martin checks the fridge and there is nothing in it but milk, eggs and butter.

Martin: Wait a minute, there's nothing in here! I asked you if you needed anything from the supermarket.

Margeret: I don't need that much food these days martin, leave me alone..

Martin: well mother the doctor said that you have been losing weight and you need to eat more! I can't believe you didn't tell me about this.

Margeret: well I didn't want to delay you your busy with work. I wanted to spend some quality time with you and now look here we are having an argument!

Martin pours her a glass of milk and sits down Martin: I know, im just worried about you I wouldn't be a very good son if I didn't.

Margret: ok I know I should eat more but its hard to make sure you know when I need some foos and I don't know when your busy..

Martin: if only there was a way to make sure you were eating properly..

Proof of Concept Prototype Method: e way we c h o s e t o c o nvey o u r c o n c e p t i d e a wa s a l o n g p ro c e s s : e problem was to try and help our Martin persona be able to find out what is in Margerets Fridge on the go. is would allow him to identify what she needs to have a healthy diet and also make sure she is eating. Elderly people today don't eat enough it's a simple fact we learned this from our interviews and from the many facts online. 20 to 50 percent of elderly people do not eat properly and this is a basic need in which we thought we could help. So why don't they eat? Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ

·Ability or energy for cooking ·Reduction in Senses of Smell and Taste ·Reduction in Sense of Sight ·Medications ·Constipation Problems with Chewing

Within this project we had to tackle the main problem we had with this vast ranging problem statement, once you find a problem you discover so many more problems. We learned this from our other prototypes and so this time we had to find the root of the problem. So if the elderly have food and martin knows how much food Margaret is eating this is the first level problem of the situation and comes before all the other problems.

Across is the holder for our camera we decided to utilise the shelf slots that were already there in order to do this. Which does the job while allowing for products to go into lower shelves.

This is the user point of view picture of the prototype. We have a camera angled from the opening door which takes a snap from the maximum distance possible with a fridge door which provides the maximum information and is excellent as overview photo for Martin. You can also see the crudely manufactured barcode scanner prototypes these were made with MDF, Perspex and LEDs and can be slid up and down the sides of the shelf. e LEDs were activated with a limit switch positioned near the switch for the light. We thought of using a real bar code scanner at first but decided against it as it was deemed unnecessary and expensive.

Some of the quotes we had were: “I think the barcode scanner is unnecessary as its job can be done with the weight sensors and the camera” Partrick We drew a lot of conclusions from this very true statement. We had trouble deciding on what to put into the fridge which we could show working and we unfortunately weren't sure if there was software which could analyse the photos on its own.

“Maybe the user could somehow cheat the system” is is true but a certain amount of human error cannot be considered when designing.

e benefits of our design are that it covers all forms of how the product is supposed to work. is is very difficult in our situation as we are dealing with a changeable, physical input this causes problems as we have to get data from a physical food product and they come in a huge amount of different shapes and sizes. We initially came to the idea of a barcode scanner which would give immediate feedback on the product this, however this was infested with problems as the barcode is placed anywhere on the product. So we decided to make the shelf of the fridge transparent so we could catch the bar code anywhere with the moving scanners.

We also encountered the problem of how the scanner would know where the product is and how would it know when a new bought product had been put into the system. To solve this problem we came up with the idea of putting in sensors on the shelf surface which could measure weight changes. is would tell the scanner where to go and tell the user how much had been used making the prototype far more intelligent.

From analysis of our design we discovered that there was a blind spot which had to be covered. is is in the centre of the fridge shelf. We decided to insert a camera in order to cover this area with the help of an image processing

program designed to identify logos, brands and text. is was far beyond our ability's so we used the prototype to send an image to martin so he could get a general idea what is inside the fridge. We also thought of putting in slots in which the user must put their product which would simplify the data but require a lot of diligence and commitment from the user.

BeneďŹ ts and Challenges We still need to test this product with some elderly people but unfortunately we could not be done due to the setup, hardware and length of time that was needed to complete this test.

We need to fully implement the programs and connect the hardware to this. en there needs to be extensive testing done in order for the product to work accurately. And ďŹ nally the actual product testing can be done We need to assess the ways around the marketing problems with this product as there is deďŹ nitely a problem with the image of putting a camera tracker inside one of the most personal places in a person's house, especially with the latest NSA surveillance and invasions of privacy.

Learnings and conclusions: I think it's a really good way of helping the care giver give care to his loved one as it eliminates wasted time for Martin also it improves their relationship as they can talk about constructive things like what recipes they have tried.

We have successfully came up with a solution to our problem statement our solution helps care givers, give care in a healthy manner which cuts to the basic root of the problem we chose: Nutrition of the Elderly.

We have learned how to get to the root of a problem with this prototype idea.

We learned what it takes to design theoretically a complex system that combines the digital wold with the physical world this is the direction in which technology and products have been going to more and more with technological advancement.

We learned that though thrashing out a problem a good solution can be found but I think that if there was more time to continue working it would allow a more comprehensive analysis on the product.

Current status of the fridge

e App enables the user to get a pre taken picture or update it as per requirement to have a quick look at the contents of the refrigerator. A series of pictures also enables him to deduce some thumb conclusion about consumption pattern of the person using the refrigerator.

FRISKI - Web based App for Android & Apple Smartphone for the product In the hectic modern life it becomes essential that the products that you use are smart enough to not only take care of you but also save the most of time required to understand and use them. Hence it was our primary concern that the product be connected to an App providing timely compilation of data and advanced features of distant monitoring.

Conclusion: We made a lot of progress in the last two weeks and it's great that we worked it all out!

We decided to tease the prototype apart into the three headings: Feasible: is product can be tested easily as long as the idea can be simplified.

Desirable: is product is definitely desirable as it fits our main persona perfect. It allows him save valuable time, improves his relationship with his family as a whole and he can feel satisfied that he is caring for his parents. is ticks all the boxes for martin but we have decided that we need to do more work on finding out if more people would be interested in this idea. To start this we interviewed people.

Viable: this product is viable as it can be installed into any fridge easily. It can be customizable and the product would actually be surprisingly cheap to manufacture.
