ROYAL HIGHLAND SHOW

After a two-year break, the Royal Highland Show made its return over the course of Thursday 23rd to Sunday 26th June. Judged by Donald MacNaughton of the Rannoch Fold, the event drew a terrific number of Highland Cattle.
Gusgurlach of Balmoral.
The star of the show was the 3-year-old Gusgurlach of Balmoral, who also reigned supreme at last year’s Royal Highland Showcase event returned and was tapped out by Donald as his Overall Champion. This Tomintoul of Glamis Castle son and out of Bhadair Ruadh 44th of Balmoral, was bred by Her Majesty The Queen and expertly shown by Dochy Ormiston. Standing in reserve to Gusgurlach was 2-year-old Alice of Hunters. Alice was also Champion Female and will now make her way to the Great Yorkshire Show. This beautiful Jura 3rd of Thaggnam daughter, out of Alice Seonag 12th of Glengorm, bred & exhibited by Stephen & Rosemary Hunter, Hunters fold and ably shown by Laura Hunter.
In reserve for the Female Championship was the 2-yearold Fern 2nd of Black Glen from Grant Hyslop, Black Glen Fold. This young heifer was sired by Eoin Mhor of Black Glen, and her dam is Fern 2nd of Ardentraive.
Reserve Male Champion was Morag Middleton’s Eoin Mhor of Black Glen. Purchased at the February bull sales, where he was Champion Aged Bull and was bred by Grant Hyslop. Sired by Eoin Mhor 8th of Mottistone and dam Ban Righ of Mottistone.
Brogach Ruadh Murphy of Seam
Junior Champion, was 15-month-old Brogach Ruadh Murphy of Seam, bred & exhibited by Simon & Emma Haley, Seam Fold. Murphy had also secured the title of Junior bull earlier in the event. Sired by Brogach of Gilden Vale and his dam a homebred female - Margaret of Seam.
Standing in reserve for the Junior Male Championship was Alan Kennedy’s 2-year-old Lord Mosscastle 3rd of Goldenberry, sired by Lord Mosscastle 2nd of Ardbhan and out of a homebred dam Cannach 5th of Goldenberry. Owned & bred by Alan Kennedy - Goldenberry Highland Cattle.
Junior Female went to the 13-month old Cuailean 1st of Isle of Bute, bred & exhibited by R & E McMillan, Isle of Bute Fold. This cracking young female is sired by Bob of Isle of Bute and her dam is Cuailean 2nd of Teaghlach.
The final reserve of the day was 16-month-old Banrigh 14th of Hyndford, who took the title of Reserve Junior Female Champion. Bred & exhibited by Alan Prentice, Hyndford Fold, and was sired by Alasdair 4th of Douglas. Her dam is the homebred Banrigh 8th of Hyndford.
GREAT YORKSHIRE SHOW
Tuesday 12th - Friday 15th July, 2022 Judge: Gordon McConachie
The Hunter family of Hunters fold had plenty to celebrate at this year’s Great Yorkshire Show. The family’s home bred Alice of Hunters reigned Overall Champion, fresh from her Reserve Champion status at this year’s Royal Highland Show.

In front of a packed ringside, Judge Gordon McConachie tapped out Alice as his winner from a great line up of Highland cattle on the day. Alice is by Jura 3rd of Thaggnam and out of Alice Seonag 12th of Glengorm. Alice was again ably shown by Laura Hunter and the duo make a great team.
Brogach Murphy Ruadh of Seam from Simon & Emma Haley, stood Reserve Champion. Murphy was Junior Champion and then secured Highland Male Champion earlier in the day. He also stood as Junior Champion at this year’s Royal Highland Show. This 15-month-old was sired by Brogach of Gilden Vale and his dam is a homebred female, Margaret of Seam. Reserve Female Champion Arin 2nd of Blairlogan bred, owned and exhibited by D & C Logan. This beautiful yearling heifer looks to have a great future ahead of her. Sired by Aonghas Ruadh of Hyndford out of Arin 2nd of Culfoich she pushed Alice all the way for the female championship.
Reserve Male Champion was Alex of Congash owned and shown by Sarah Cuthbertson. This is a 5 year old bull and was sired by Russell 3rd of Craigowmill and his dam is Susan 19th of Ormsary.
Judges Comments: ‘It was an honour to be asked to judge the Highland cattle classes at the Great Yorkshire Show this year. Most classes had good numbers in them which was good to see. Thanks must go to the stock men and women who paraded round the ring with their animals in extremely challenging hot conditions.
Male Champion was the junior bull from Simon & Emma Hailey. Female champion was the 2year old heifer from the Hunters Fold of Stephen, Rosie and Laura.
I tapped out the 2-year-old heifer as my champion. She is a very nice heifer which caught the eye whenever she entered the ring.
Congratulations go to all prize winners, and I hope they go on to do well at other shows and sales in the future.

ROYAL WELSH SHOW
Monday 18th - Thursday 21st July, 2022 Judge: Iain McKay
This year we welcomed back the Royal Welsh Show, after a two-year gap. Once again Highlands were one of the most represented breeds in attendance and, as always, drew in the crowds and media. The classes were strong with excellent examples of the breed put forward. Handlers faced challenging conditions in the heat, alongside the cattle, but everyone dug deep and the show went on.

The Monday evening awards presentation and supper was a wonderful gathering of over 50 club members. Annie and Becky organised a delicious spread of food and our Chairman, Guy Mumford presented the days trophies. To see everyone come together in such a jovial atmosphere, all in celebration of each others achievements, was humbling.
Tuesday morning, Robin went down the cattle lines offering novices and young handlers advice and wisdom on many show-related topics. He found the session very rewarding and hopes the novices and young handlers did too. While Olwen Ford and Julian Ford took to the helm in the stand and offered everyone a warm welcome. Thank you to all who attended the show this year. Exhibitors, club members, David and Helen Hyland from the Society, all our visitors, and our judge, Iain McKay who travelled down from Scotland to attend.
Highlanders in Wales are thriving like never before all thanks to your support. We saw a huge interest in the breed this year with many seriously considering a shift from continental breeds to hardier, more economical natives such as the Highland. With the new Welsh Sustainable Farming Scheme on the horizon, those of us already converted to the breed hope to continue showcasing how productive these cattle are, both as a pedigree and for crossing. The future has never looked so good for the breed in Wales.

Judges Comments “It was a pleasure to judge the Highland Cattle section of the Royal Welsh Show. There were very strong classes of cattle which were all extremely well presented. In the bull class, I chose a well fleshed animal put forward from the Chadwich fold, which went on to get reserve champion. The champion animal was a cow and calf shown by Annie Perkins. A good showy cow that looked perfect on the day. The rest of the cattle were all well turned out and the exhibitors did exceptionally well despite the searing heat.” Iain McKay, Cnoc fold, Appin
TURRIFF SHOW
National Highland Cattle Show Monday 1st August, 2022 Judge: Jim McKechnie
What a day for the MacNaughton family at the National Show at Turriff. Donald’s Bryar Rose of Rannoch took the Female and Overall Championship, whilst the Reserve Female and Reserve Overall went to Alice 22nd of Tordarroch from John Cooper’s Inverness-shire fold, brought out by Donald’s son Bryon. Female and overall champion, Bryor Rose of Rannoch The National Show, this year hosted by the North of Scotland Highland Cattle Club, started with a wellattended barbecue for members and exhibitors on the Sunday night followed by the show on Monday. The judge, Jim McKechnie of Gartochan fold, spent time assessing and handling every animal with great care and fairness but, without doubt, the two-year-old Bryar Rose stood out from the moment she entered the ring. Sired by Seumus Dubh of Craigowmill, Bryar Rose out of Hayley of Rannoch (who won the National Show at Perth in 2017) was also Champion at Stars of the Future last year, as well as Fife, West and Central Fife, and Angus Shows this season.

Reserve overall, Alice 22nd of Tordarroch The Reserve Female and Reserve Overall was the May 2020 born, two-year-old Alice 22nd of Tordarroch, sired by Macrae Charles of Maol and out of Alice 20th of Tordarroch. This heifer, out for her first show season was Champion at Dornoch, Nairn, where she was also Reserve Interbreed Champion, and Black Isle Shows.

Male champion, Bryden 2nd of Culfoich The Male Champion and Senior Bull winner was Bryden 2nd of Culfoich. This five-year-old red stock bull from the McConachie family, out for his first show, was sired by Jacob 2nd of Benmore and out of Cailean 1st of Culfoich. The Reserve Male and winner of the Junior bull class was Gilleasbaig of Balrownie from the Carnegie family at Balrownie Farms. His sire is the well known Coineal 3rd of Balmoral, his dam is Iseabal 9th of Mottistone from the equally well known fold of Michael Poland.
The Judge commented that the top end was of excellent quality and a good standard throughout.
