HOUSE FOR A CERAMIST PRAIA

A ceramist is associated to the production of ceramic artifacts. The oven, as a crucial tool in this profession, and the basement, as a humid place to conserve the raw material, are fundamental and they earn great importance in the structure of this house. The approach to this house was not characterized by the construction of a small and simple basement used to store and prepare the materials, but the materialization of an imaginary: a basement that dominate the whole house.

The proposal is characterized by the volumetric of a horizontal parallelepiped that contrasts with the verticality of the chimney and is located on a place of great natural beauty where the ecosystem is manifested in exuberant and impressive way. Within the plot there is an outside path that leads us to two entrances: one for the work area and another for the domestic area.

The house-workshop is composed of three floors and three private outdoor spaces: a basement where the social functions and the workshop were allocated.

The social space allows full communion with the outside. There is a sensory dialogue with nature. ontrariwise, the workshop area has no direct contact with the surroundings. On the first floor, by which we access to the house, it is characterized by full transparency that transmits an eventual feeling of emptiness. The top floor, where the most private area is located, tries to take maximum advantage of the obviously romantic landscape.

The shape of this house tries to contrast with the subtlety of the surrounding landscape. Thus it corresponds to a parallelepiped constituted by concrete that lands on the ground. The top floor lands on the rest of the house, as it was not part of the same reality.

Um ceramista está associado à produção de artefactos cerâmicos. O forno, como ferramenta crucial nesta profissão, e a cave, como um local húmido para conservar a matéria-prima, são fundamentais e ganham uma grande importância na estrutura desta casa. A abordagem a esta habitação não se caracterizou pela construção de uma pequena e simples cave onde se armazenam e preparam os materiais, mas sim pela materialização de um imaginário: uma cave que dominasse toda a casa.

A proposta caracteriza-se pela volumetria de um paralelepípedo horizontal que contrasta com a verticalidade da chaminé e está implantada num lugar de grande beleza natural, pouco acidentado, onde o ecossistema se manifesta de forma exuberante e imponente. Dentro do lote, existe um percurso exterior que nos conduz a duas entradas: uma relativa à da zona de trabalho e outra à doméstica.

A casa-oficina é composta por três pisos e três espaços exteriores privados: uma “cave”, onde foram alocadas as funções sociais e a oficina. O espaço social permite uma total comunhão com o exterior. Existe um diálogo sensorial com a natureza. Pelo contrário, a zona oficinal não possui um contacto directo com a paisagem. No primeiro piso, pelo qual acedemos à habitação, caracteriza-se por uma transparência total, transmitido uma eventual sensação de vazio. O último piso, onde se encontra a zona mais privada, tenta retirar máximo partido da paisagem obviamente romântica.

A volumetria tenta contrastar com a subtileza da paisagem envolvente, correspondendo assim a um paralelepípedo constituído de betão armado que pousa sobre o terreno. O último piso pousa sobre o resto da casa como que não fosse parte da mesma realidade.

Located in Wilrijk, the proposal attempts to answer a demographic challenge because until 2O3O the population of city of Antwerp will grow with 1OO OOO people. The city wishes to accommodate a large part of these new inhabitants in the 2Oth century belt.

This means new homes, new facilities and new jobs are needed in this part of the city. The heart of this intervention area is the historical ruin Fort VI built in the second half of 19th century, which is a part of an array of eight fortresses built for protecting the city of Antwerp.

The exercise is a response to this need for housing.

This leads to a new housing that articulates the public space and the transition of the houses with the park. The road divides this proposal into two challenges: on the one hand, the new set of houses redefines the block and the other is the transition from built-park. The intervention consists of 5O+1 houses and 3 facilities (commercial area, community center and observation tower). The houses are almost all different and all organized in different forms between them. Thus, the houses are dynamic elements in urban space. Seeking to create tensions and new spatiality to be more intense this experience of the collective.

The intervention results from the exploration of lines of thought. They are: As Found, because observing what is already there is a key element in the making of a good design. The void space as protagonist, because we live on the void space and it must have qualities; Between conduction and seduction demonstrates how we can move on the voids spaces; The Tension between Interior and Exterior/Public and Private because we need an architecture that causes tension, because the habit is just our hand-cuffs.

Localizado em Wilrijk, a proposta tenta responder a um desafio demográfico, porque até 2O3O a população da cidade de Antuérpia vai crescer com 1OO OOO pessoas.

A cidade pretende acomodar uma grande parte dos novos habitantes no cinturão do século XX. Isto significa novas casas, novos equipamentos e novos postos de trabalho são necessários nesta parte da cidade. O coração da área de intervenção é a ruína histórica Fort VI construída na segunda metade do século XIX, que é uma parte de uma série de oito fortalezas construídas para proteger a cidade de Antuérpia.

O exercício é uma resposta a essa necessidade de habitação. Isto leva a uma proposta que articula o espaço público e a transição das habitações com o parque. A estrada divide esta proposta em dois desafios: por um lado, o novo conjunto de casas redefine o bloco e a outra é a transição do construido-parque. A intervenção consiste em 5O + 1 casas e 3 equipamentos (área comercial, centro comunitário e torre de observação). As habitações são quase todas diferentes e todas organizados em diferentes formas entre elas. Assim, as habitações são elementos dinâmicos no espaço urbano. Busca criar tensões e nova espacialidade para ser mais intensa a experiência do coletivo.

A intervenção resulta da exploração de linhas de pensamento. São elas: As Found, porque observan o que já está lá é um elemento-chave na elaboração de uma boa proposta; O espaço vazio como protagonista, porque vivemos no espaço vazio e ele deve ter qualidades; Entre condução e sedução demonstra como podemos mover nos espaços vazios; A Tensão entre Interior e Exterior / Público e Privado, porque precisamos de uma arquitetura que provoque tensão, porque o hábito é apenas as algemas.

1. A NEW ROAD ALLOWS TO COMPLETE THE PERIMETER AROUND THIS HISTORIC AREA AND A NEW PUBLIC SPACE ENABLES TO ARTICULATE THE PUBLIC TRANSPORT, THE ACCESS TO THE PARK AND TO THE BUILDINGS OF THE UNIVERSITY. ALL THIS RESULTED IN A REORGANIZATION OF SPORTS AREAS AS THE DEMOLITION OF SOME BUILDINGS.

BAR AT SCHOOL UNIVERSITY OF MINHO CAMPUS. GUIMARÃES, PORTUGAL JULY 2O13. ORIENTED BY ARCH. ELISIÁRIO MIRANDA

Located at the main entrance of the School of Architecture of the University of Minho, the project tries to reflect and respond to the multiple problems of location, functionality, comfort and spatial quality of the existing facilities.

The new building seeks a clear spatial articulation with the entry of the School of Architecture and the university campus, conveying the idea of a longitudinal closed volume that materializes the imaginary of a sculpture that punctuates the campus. However, the materials used, polycarbonate and glass, allow interaction with the surroundings, creating a constant dialogue between the inside and the outside.

The proposal develops in 3 levels: the first level is the main access to the new equipment, which takes place through the pre-existing stairs of the entrance to the School of Architecture. In this floor is located also the volume of prefabricated concrete which supports part of the building and not have any function; the second level contains all the functions of the bar with the exception of the outdoor terrace that is located on the roof that allows the contemplation of the near and distant surroundings and at the same time creates a new level of privileged public space.

This project has 4 main materials: steel, present in the structure; glass present in the pavement, allowing the interaction with the lower floor; polycarbonate that covers the entire building except the roof; prefabricated reinforced concrete, that despite being present in the volume of support is present on the roof, referring to the memory of the existing walkways on campus.

Localizado na entrada principal da Escola de Arquitectura da Universidade do Minho, o projecto tenta refletir e responder aos múltiplos problemas de localização, funcionalidade, conforto e qualidade espacial das instalações existentes.

O novo edifício procura uma clara articulação espacial com a entrada da Escola de Arquitectura e com o campus universitário, transmitindo a ideia de um volume longitudinal encerrado, materializando o imaginário de uma escultura que pontua o campus.

Contudo, os materiais utilizados, policarbonato e vidro, permitem que este comunique com a envolvente, existindo um diálogo constante entre o interior e o exterior.

A proposta desenvolve-se em 3 níveis: o primeiro nível corresponde ao acesso principal ao novo equipamento, que se realiza através das escadas pré-existentes da entrada da Escola de Arquitectura. Neste piso também se encontra o volume em betão armado pré-fabricado que suporta parte do edifício e que não possui qualquer tipo de programa; o segundo nível contêm todo o programa do bar com a excepçao da esplanada descoberta que se situa na cobertura, permitindo a contemplação de toda a envolvente próxima e longínqua ao mesmo tempo que cria um novo nível privilegiado de espaço público.

Este projecto possui 4 materiais principais: aço, presente na estrutura; vidro, presente no pavimento, permitindo a interacção com o piso inferior; policarbonato que reveste todo o edifício excepto a cobertura; betão armado pré-fabricado, que para além de estar presente no volume de suporte, está presente na cobertura, remetendo para a memória dos passadiços existentes no campus.

The exercise consists in developing a proposal for the St. Francis Convent in Real, under the plan of reutilization and the construction of a new building to the Archaeology Unit of University of Minho in order to transmit a new meaning to this monastic space. The building to intervene is in a small hill that guaranteed a privileged view of the surrounding.

Nowadays, this surrounding is infected with the uncontrolled growth of the city of Braga, which ends up to condition the new volume.

The new volume is implanted East of the convent, in what could be the contemporary evolution of the convent, and respects the height of the loggia, not exceeding. There is a search for the reinterpretation of the fence and the cloister in the new construction, since they are quite characteristic elements of the monastic spaces. Thus, the new construction closes to the outside, protecting them from the chaotic surrounding organization and opens to the interior.

This interior is a deconstruction of the cloister concept, which allows the possibility of crossing the new building at the level of the convent entrance.

This crossing seeks to enhance the interaction between the public and the workers of the unity since the program includes parts of installations that open to the public.

The project seeks that mandatory contact between the route of the visitors and the interior of the new archeology unit. There is always a "look down" when someone crosses the new building, since the main unit program is buried. Thus, the new building tries to materialize the imaginary of working on an archaeological dig.

CHRONO-MORPHOLOGICAL EVOLUTION OF THE CONVENT

PROPOSAL

O exercício consiste na elaboração de uma proposta para o convento de S.Francisco em Real, sob o desígnio da sua reutilização e com a construção de um novo edifício para albergar a Unidade de Arqueologia da Universidade do Minho com o intuito de transmitir um novo significado a este espaço. O edifício a intervir encontra-se num pequeno outeiro que lhe garantia uma visão privilegiada da sua envolvente. Hoje em dia, esta envolvente está infectada pelo crescimento desordenado da cidade de Braga, o que acaba por condicionar o novo volume.

O novo volume implanta-se a Este do convento, no que poderia ser a evolução contemporânea do convento, respeitando a cota da loggia, não a ultrapassando.

Existe uma procura pela reinterpretação da cerca e do claustro na nova construção, visto que estes são elementos bastantes característicos dos espaços monásticos. Deste modo, a nova construção fecha-se para o exterior, protegendo-se da organização caótica da envolvente, abrindo-se para o interior. Este interior consiste numa desconstrução do conceito de claustro, o que permite a possibilidade de o atravessar à cota de implantação do convento. Este atravessamento procura potencializar a interação entre o público e os trabalhadores da unidade, visto que o programa inclui partes de instalações que se abrem para o público.

O projecto procura esse contacto obrigatório entre o percurso dos visitantes e o interior da nova unidade de arqueologia, existindo sempre um “olhar para baixo” quando se atravessa o edifício, visto que o principal programa da unidade encontra-se num piso enterrado. Assim, a nova construção tenta materializar o imaginário de trabalhar numa escavação arqueológica.

Although the buildings are degraded, the historic center is well maintained in relation to public spaces. However, Largo da Misericórdia is a space with no identity and its main function is parking lot.

The proposal aims to compress various activities in an urban fragment, thus providing a multi-functional character to the building and the public space.

The program seeks to promote and develop various activities of cultural / social areas where the everyday of the historic center and the artistic creation engage in informal and different spaces.

Thus arises a tower caused by the verticality that dominates the square, implemented with one of the directions of the imposing existing wall. However, the intervention is complemented by the creation of another space with the same perimeter. On the one hand we have an object that is a positive, on the other we have a negative.

The building is a vertical succession of spaces with different qualities and uses, always looking for a relationship between themselves and with the outside, near and far, always exploring the informal side of the interaction, in which the accessible roof lets look at the history center with a new perspective. The spaces of small format seek to accommodate theatre shows, concerts, exhibitions, talks and workshops.

The intervention seeks to interpret the old towers and shapes that dominate the historic center. This approach to an old tower ultimately is performed by use of reinforced concrete that dominates the entire building. If before were built with natural stones, now it is projected a tower with a contemporary material, an artificial rock, able to grow old.

Apesar dos edifícios estarem degradados, o centro histórico está bem conservado no que diz respeito aos espaços públicos. Contudo, o Largo da Misericórdia é um espaço sem identidade e tem como principal função a de parque de estacionamento.

A proposta pretende compactar diversas actividades num fragmento urbano, conferindo assim um carácter multifuncional ao edifício e ao espaço público. O programa procura promover e desenvolver diversas actividades de cariz cultural/social onde o quotidiano do centro histórico e a criação artística se envolvem em espaços informais e diferenciados.

Deste modo, surge uma torre provocada pela verticalidade que domina todo o Largo, implantando-se com uma das direções do imponente muro existente. Contudo, a intervenção é complementada pela criação de outro espaço com o mesmo perímetro. Se de um lado temos um objecto que é um positivo, do outro temos um negativo.

O edifício é uma sucessão vertical de espaços com diferentes qualidades e usos, procurando sempre uma relação entre eles próprios e com o exterior, próximo e longínquo, explorando sempre o lado informal do convívio, na qual a cobertura acessível permite olhar para o centro histórico de uma nova perspectiva. Os espaços, de pequeno formato, procuram acolher espetáculos de teatro, concertos, exposições, conversas e oficinas de formação.

A intervenção procura interpretar as torres de menagem e as formas que dominam o centro histórico. Este aproximar a uma antiga torre acaba por ser realizada pelo uso do betão armado que domina todo o edifício.

Se antes se construíam com pedras naturais, hoje projecta-se uma torre com um material contemporâneo, uma rocha artificial, capaz de envelhecer.

An alley corresponds to a narrow street penetrating into the urban fabric. Although nowadays the majority be completely hidden or destroyed, Turrepoorsteeg is one of the best examples in the city of Ghent. Situated in a quarter in which in the past was composed of a number of monasteries and gardens, this street had a huge historical importance as one of the entry gates into the city.

In this longitudinal urban fragment, it is possible to read and understand a variety of information and sensations when we walk along the street. In summary, the sense of curiosity, time and materiality, silence and solitude, memory and imagination that J. Pallasma describes in the book "Eyes of the Skin" are all present.

Turrepoorsteeg acts as a refuge, an escape from the chaotic city. The objective was to introduce an end/ destination - a completely isolated space by four tall walls where the cloister gardens are reinterpreted to create an idyllic space. This was only possible because of the existence of an abandoned house in which there were only the imposing brick walls, two windows and a modest entrance that was closed.

The journey is the key moment of the intervention.

The alley is the genuine refuge and intervention seeks to emphasize this through a simple longitudinal line along with a path that marks the perimeter of the intervention. The proposal is divided into several moments, in different degrees of intimacy, in different ways to relate to this new space, which never tries to remove protagonism to the existing elements.

Um alley corresponde a uma estreita rua que penetra no tecido urbano. Apesar de hoje em dia a maioria estar completamente escondida ou destruida, Turrepoorsteeg é um dos melhores exemplos na cidade de Ghent. Situado num quarteirão onde no passado era constituído por uma série de Mosteiros e os seus jardins, esta rua tinha uma enorme importância histórica como uma das portas de entrada na cidade.

Neste longitudinal fragmento urbano, é possível ler e perceber uma série de informações e sensações quando caminhamos ao longo da rua. Resumidamente, a sensação de curiosidade, tempo e materialidade, de silêncio e de solidão, de memória e imaginação que J. Pallasma descreve no livro “Eyes of the Skin” estão todas presentes.

Turrepoorsteeg funciona como um refúgio, um escape da cidade caótica. O objectivo foi introduzir um fim/ destino – um espaço totalmente isolado por quatro paredes altas onde os jardins dos claustros são reinterpretados de modo a criar um espaço idílico.

Isto apenas foi possível devido à existência de uma casa abandonada em que só restavam as imponentes paredes de tijolo, duas janelas e uma modesta entrada que estava encerrada.

O percurso é o momento chave da intervenção. O alley é o genuíno refúgio e a intervenção procura enfatizar isso através de uma simples longitudinal linha juntamente com um percurso que marca o perímetro da intervenção. A proposta encontra-se dividida em vários momentos, em diferentes graus de intimidade, em diferentes modos de relacionar com este novo espaço, que nunca procura retirar protagonismo aos existentes elementos.
