La Asociación de Educación Ambiental y del Consumidor hizo público la relación de playas galardonadas con banderas azules en 2008 y San Roque volvió a obtener un año más tres banderas azules: Torreguadiaro, Cala Sardina y Alcaidesa (compartida con La Línea). El Campo de Gibraltar fue galardonado con una bandera más, para la playa de Sobrevela de La Línea. Precisamente, la arena de Torreguadiaro acogió el mismo 28 la I Jornada de Deporte Playa Barbésula 2008, que reunió a más de 300 escolares de colegios de la comarca campogibraltareña.

The Environmental Education and Consumer Association has made the 2008 list of Blue Flag beaches public, and San Roque once again obtained three flags: Torreguadiaro, Cala Sardina and Alcaidesa (shared with La Línea). Campo de Gibraltar received one more Blue Flag, for La Línea’s Sobrevela beach. On May 28 the sands of Torreguadiaro hosted the 1st 2008 Barbésula Beach Sports Day, which brought together over 300 schoolchildren from Campo de Gibraltar schools.

Banderas azules para nuestras playas
E
stamos de enhorabuena. Un año más, las playas más próximas a Sotogrande han sido galardonadas con banderas azules. El buen estado de conser vación de su arena y de sus aguas, complementadas con el amplio abanico de servicios, han sido premiados por ADEA, un organismo internacional que otorga estos galardones en cuatro continentes. Esta muestra de la calidad de nuestro destino es obra, sobre todo, del compromiso general. Los ciudadanos disfrutamos todo el año de estas playas y sabemos cuidarlas. También hay que felicitar al Ayuntamiento, porque no sólo ha sabido mantener el buen estado de conser vación de la playa que en el último lustro recibe este premio (Torreguadiaro), sino que también ha conseguido otra bandera azul para la barriada: Cala Sardina, que ha sido premiada por segundo año consecutivo. Y por supuesto, por la obtenida para Alcaidesa. Para nosotros está claro que estos premios son el mejor respaldo para Sotogrande, que disfruta así de este sello de garantía de calidad para complementar el resto de su oferta turística. Además, estos premios son un ejemplo claro de que aquí sabemos qué es lo importante para nuestro futuro: unas playas en buen estado y respetuosas con el medio ambiente, garantizando un turismo de calidad, el que abandera Sotogrande desde que llegaron los primeros bañistas en los años 60. En estos últimos días de mayo, el destino Sotogrande también se ha visto reforzado con la elección de tres de sus edificios más interesantes para formar parte del Registro Andaluz de Arquitectura Contemporánea, precisamente con construcciones emblemáticas de la década de los 60. Son la sede del Real Club de Golf Sotogrande, la Casa Zóbel y la Casa Biddle. Y a estas buenas noticias añadimos en este nuevo número de El Periódico de Sotogrande una de carácter más particular y que nos enorgullece: el reconocimiento de la Asociación Española de Editores de Publicaciones Periódicas (AEPP) al trabajo que el Grupo HCP realiza desde hace diez años. El presidente de la empresa, José Luis García Iglesias, ha sido nombrado Mejor Editor del Año 2007. Un reconocimiento que nos da más ilusión para afrontar nuestra labor informativa.

e have reason to celebrate. Once again, the beaches closest to Sotogrande have been awarded Blue Flags. The good condition of their sand and their waters, complemented by the wide range of services, has been acknowledged by the ADEA, an international body which grants these awards in four continents. This example of the quality of our destination is, above all, down to a general commitment. The public enjoys these beaches all year round and we know how to look after them. But we also have to congratulate the Municipal Council, because not only has it managed to maintain the good condition of the beach that over the past five years has received this award (Torreguadaro), it has also achieved another Blue Flag for the district: Cala Sardina, which has received the award for the second year running. And of course, a flag was also obtained for Alcaidesa. In our view there is no doubt that these awards are the best possible endorsement for Sotogrande and this guarantee of quality complements the rest of its offering for tourists. In addition, these awards are a clear example of the fact that around here we know what is important for our future: beaches that are in good condition and respectful of the environment, ensuring the quality tourism for which Sotogrande has been the standard bearer since the arrival of the first bathers in the 1960s. Over these last days of May, the Sotogrande destination has also received a boost in the form of the selection of three of its most interesting buildings to be part of the Andalusian Registry of Contemporary Architecture. The buildings in question are emblematic designs of the 1960s: the Real Club de Golf Sotogrande headquarters, Casa Zóbel and Casa Biddle. And in addition to this good news, in this latest edition of El Periódico de Sotogrande, we make a very special announcement which fills us with pride: the acknowledgement from the Spanish Association of Editors of Periodic Publications (Spanish initials AEPP) for the work that Grupo HCP has been doing over the past 10 years. The chairman of the firm, José Luis García, has been named ‘Best Editor of 2007’, an acknowledgement that makes us even more enthusiastic about our work as news providers.

El Centro Jovellanos impartió un curso en prevención y lucha de la contaminación

Personal de los puertos deportivos de Sotogrande, Puerto Banús y Estepona han participado en un curso básico preparatorio de prevención y lucha contra la contaminación por hidrocarburos impartido por el Centro de Seguridad Marítima Integral Jovellanos. El objetivo fue proporcionar a los alumnos conocimientos sobre los sistemas de prevención, contención y recogida de derrames, los equipos necesarios, su mantenimiento y reparación para conseguir, de esta forma, una respuesta correcta ante sucesos de contaminación marina, atendiendo a la estructura básica es-
tablecida en los planes interiores de contingencia. Tras dos jornadas de clases teóricas, los alumnos participaron el viernes 23 de mayo en una sesión práctica donde tuvieron ocasión de familiarizarse con los equipos y ver una demostración del procedimiento de actuación a desarrollar en caso de derrame. La sesión contó con el despliegue y exhibición de un equipo de contención y recuperación de hidrocarburos, donde los participantes aprendieron las nociones básicas sobre el montaje, las características, el funcionamiento y limitaciones de los equipos. Asimismo, se montó un fastank para mostrar

Jovellanos Centre provides course on preventing and fighting pollution Staff from the marinas of Sotogrande, Puerto Banús and Estepona took part in a basic preparatory course on preventing and fighting hydrocarbon pollution, provided by the Jovellanos Centre for Comprehensive Maritime Safety. The aim was to provide students with knowledge of the systems for preventing, containing and cleaning up spillages and of the necessary equipment and its maintenance and repair, in order to ensure adequate response to marine pollution incidents, in keeping with the basic structure established in the interior contingency plans. After two days of theory lessons, on Friday May 23 the students took part in a practical session in which they had a chance to familiarise themselves with the equipment and see a demonstration of the procedure to carry out in the event of a spillage. The session involved the
deployment and exhibition of a hydrocarbon containment and recovery unit, and the participants learned the basics on assembly, the specifications, operation and limitations of the equipment. They also set up a fastank to show the staff how
these storage tanks are used and handled. These courses are being taught at a large number of Andalusian harbours, such as those of Aguadulce and Benalmádena. The next course will be held at Puerto Banús.

a distinción entre residente y no residente fiscal es de gran relevancia. Mientras los residentes fiscales en España tributan por su renta mundial obtenida y ganancias de capital, los no residentes fiscales tributan únicamente por las rentas obtenidas en territorio español. Usted será residente fiscal en España si cumple con cualquiera de los siguientes criterios: - En términos generales, que permanezca más de 183 días durante un año natural, en territorio español. - Que radique en España el núcleo principal o la base de sus actividades o intereses económicos, de forma directa o indirecta. - Se presume, salvo prueba en contrario, cuando residan habitualmente en España el cónyuge y los hijos menores de edad que dependan de él. Todos los residentes fiscales en España tienen obligación de presentar la declaración de la renta relativa al ejercicio 2007 (Impuesto sobre la Renta de las Personas Físicas)hasta el 30 de junio de este año. El ejercicio fiscal español, se extiende desde el 1 de enero hasta el 31 de diciembre. Las declaraciones de la renta pueden ser individuales o conjuntas para las parejas casadas. En general, es más ventajoso presentar declaraciones individua-
les cuando ambos cónyuges trabajan y tienen ingresos. Los residentes fiscales en España serán gravados por su renta mundial obtenida, incluyendo pensiones por jubilación y otras pensiones percibidas en el extranjero. La base imponible del impuesto sobre la renta personas físicas en España se divide en: la renta del ahorro y de los ingresos en general. La renta del ahorro, tributa a un tipo fijo del 18%, y consisten básicamente en: Dividendos, ingresos por intereses y ganancias de capital en términos generales. Los sueldos, las pensiones y los ingresos por arrendamiento constituyen la renta general y tributan según una escala progresiva (del 24% al 43%). Existen también reducciones por rendimiento del trabajo y otras como por ejemplo: el mínimo personal y familiar. En el caso de que usted haya pagado impuestos en otro Estado, podrá deducirse este impuesto en España, dependiendo del convenio internacional , si existiese, entre ambos Estados. Aquellas personas que perciben rendimientos por inmuebles arrendados, deben conocer la diferencia entre residentes o no residentes, ya que los no residentes pagarán un tipo fijo del 24% sobre el total de los rendimientos percibidos sin la posibilidad de deducir cualquier tipo de gastos. En el caso del residente fiscal, puede deducir muchos gastos como: los impuestos locales como el IBI, gastos por reparaciones y conservación, los honorarios de los agentes y las comisiones, los intereses sobre los préstamos etc. En algunos casos puede tener derecho a una reducción del 50% o 100% de los rendimientos en el caso de que el inmueble sea destinado a vivienda habitual del arrendatario.

Once you are tax resident in Spain you will be liable for tax on your worldwide income, which includes your UK state retirement pension and occupational pension. Taxable income in Spain is split into: savings income (renta del ahorro) and general income (renta general). The worldwide savings incomes of residents are taxed at a fixed rate of 18% and basically consist of: Dividend and interest incomes, and Capital Gains in general terms. Salaries, pensions and rental income, are taxable at a progressive scale rate from 24% to 43%. There are several tax free allowances as for example: the basic personal allowance, and the earned income allowance. In the case you are paying taxes in other country you are able to offset this tax depending on the Double Taxation agreement between both countries. For those people who have rental incomes, it is very important to know the difference between Resident or non-resident, because if you are a non resident, you will pay a flat rate of 24% of the rental income without the possibility to deduct any type of expenses. In the case you are resident, you can offset many expenses as: local taxes such as IBI, repairs and maintenance, managing agents’ fees, commissions, interest on loans etc.. Sotogrande S.A. no se presentó al último Consejo de Emgreal
Preocupación por la gestión de Finca La Alcaidesa

El Ayuntamiento de San Roque ha mostrado su preocupación por la situación que se está viviendo en la empresa mixta Emgreal, gestionada en un 51% por el Ayuntamiento y en un 49% por Sotogrande S.A. El responsable de Medio Ambiente, Miguel Núñez, ha indicado que Sotogrande no está cumpliendo con las responsabilidades que asumió cuando se constituyó la empresa en 2004 para la gestión de Finca La Alcaidesa. Los problemas entre ambas partes han afectado directamente a la gestión de la em-
presa y de Finca La Alcaidesa, de hecho, según Nuñez, se está paralizando el funcionamiento de la empresa. Las diferencias entre ambas partes se materializaron el pasado 20 de mayo, cuando Sotogrande S.A. y tres de los cuatro concejales convocados por el PSOE no se presentaron al consejo de administración de la empresa en el que se debía aclarar la postura de ambas partes. Finalmente se tuvo que suspender el consejo por falta de quórum. Según el responsable de Medio Ambiente, “no se nos ha indicado el motivo por el
que Sotogrande no asistió al consejo, yo lo único que pido es que cada uno asuma sus responsabilidades y quiero dejar claro que aquí no se pretende echar a nadie ni convertir la empresa en pública, como se ha comentado”. Con respecto a las consecuencias que esta situación puede conllevar de no solucionarse de forma urgente, Núñez aclara que no sabe si la Junta puede actuar, “porque es un problema interno de la empresa, lo que sí está claro es que esto está teniendo una consecuencia directa: la paralización de Emgreal”.

San Roque Municipal Council has expressed its concern over the current situation of the mixed enterprise Emgreal, managed 51% by the Council and 48% by Sotogrande S.A. Environment councillor Miguel Núñez has indicated that Sotogrande is not fulfilling the responsibilities it assumed when the company was founded in 2004 for the management of Finca La Alcaidesa. The problems between the two parties have directly affected the management of the company and of Finca La Alcaidesa and,
in fact, according to Nuñez, operation of the company is being put on hold. The differences between the two parties materialised on May 20 when Sotogrande S.A. and three or four councillors failed to turn up at the board meeting called for by the PSOE in order to clarify the position of each party. In the end the board meeting had to be cancelled for lack of a quorum. According to the environment councillor, “they have not given us a reason for Sotogrande’s absence at the board mee-
ting; all that I ask is for everyone to assume their responsibilities and I want to make it clear that the aim is not to get rid of anyone nor make the company a public enterprise, as has been said”. With regard to the consequences that this situation may have if not resolved urgently, Nuñez stated that he does not know if the Regional Government can take action, “because it’s an internal company problem, but it’s clear that this business is having one direct consequence: the paralysis of Emgreal”.

El Estudio de Arquitectos liderado por Colin McLundie está trabajando en un espectacular proyecto en Abu Dhabi (Emiratos Árabes Unidos), donde construye una ciudad residencial para 60 mil habitantes junto a otros dos viejos amigos, Geddes e Hypostyle Architects, con los que ha formado un consorcio y a los que concoce desde hace 35 años, desde que estudiaron juntos en Glasgow. El propio promotor de este proyecto les pidió que se asociaran para dirigir juntos lo que McLundie califica como “una oportunidad única en la vida”. “En estos momentos reparto mi tiempo al 50 por ciento entre Sotogrande y Abu Dhabi”, comenta Colin McLundie, recién llegado a su estudio en Pueblo Nuevo. “Mis socios, Roddy Fraser y Francis Trico, como han hecho por muchos años, se encargan de llevar el día a día de Sotogrande y hacer el trato con nuestros clientes. Al final de año, anticipo volver a pasar más tiempo aquí. Tal vez por estas ausencias algunos han creído que me había marchado de
Sotogrande, pero nada más lejos de mi intención que abandonar a mis clientes de toda la vida. Además, en Sotogrande tenemos la suerte de que no sufriremos tanto esta crisis, porque es una zona de alta calidad”. Buena coyuntura Este proyecto en los Emiratos llegó oportunamente. “Nos ha venido muy bien por la bajada del mercado en España, aunque eso no significa que no sigamos trabajando aquí, pues continuamos en Arcos Gardens, empezamos hace dos meses a construir un bloque de apartamentos en la Marina de Gibraltar y estamos preparando un proyecto de uso mixto en el Campo de Gibraltar. Sin hablar, por supuesto, de nuestras villas de siempre en Sotogrande, que son el emblema de nuestro éxito y que nos siguen dando muchas satisfacciones”, afirma McLundie, que también acaba de terminar el proyecto de reforma total de la Casa Club de Las Brisas (Nueva Andalucía) y la construcción de una nueva ‘pro shop’. Desde que comenzó a tra-

bajar en Sotogrande, en 1991, Colin McLundie calcula haber construido unas 150 villas, una cifra espectacular que atribuye a haber tenido “mucha suerte y mucho apoyo de parte de nuestros clientes y amigos. Creo que hemos dado un buen servicio y por eso los clientes vuelven a confiar en nosotros”. Toque andaluz La personal interpretación de la arquitectura andaluza que ha hecho McLundie a lo largo de
su carrera le ha valido buena parte de su reconocimiento y, también, le ha servido ahora para trasladar ese estilo a Abu Dhabi, donde, asegura, “hay muchas similitudes con la idiosincrasia y el carácter andaluz”. Precisamente esas semejanzas debieron atraer a sus clientes en Abu Dhabi, los Al Dar, entre los mayores promotores del emirato. “Nuestro proyecto es casi pequeño para ellos, que tienen en la actualidad en marcha proyectos por valor de 70

mil millones de dólares”, comenta Colin McLundie, que construye un complejo residencial de 5.000 villas, 2.000 adosados y 2.000 apartamentos sobre una superficie de 13 millones de metros cuadrados. “Las villas están construidas con tres estilos diferentes”, cuenta el arquitecto, “una parte es de estilo andaluz, otra moderna y una tercera sigue lo que se llama ‘Gulf Heritage’, una arquitectura con reminiscencias árabes”.

Colin McLundie will split his time between Sotogrande and Abu Dhabi until the end of the year The Architects’ Studio headed by Colin McLundie is working on a spectacular project in Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates), where they are building a residential town for 60 thousand inhabitants in conjunction with two other old friends, Geddes and Hypostyle Architects, with whom they have formed a consortium and who they have known for the past 35 years, since they studied together in Glasgow. The developer asked them to form a partnership in order to spearhead a project which McLundie describes as “a unique opportunity in life”. “Right now I am splitting my time 50-50 between Sotogrande and Abu Dhabi”, says Colin McLundie, upon arriving recently at his studio in Pueblo Nuevo. “My partners, Roddy Fraser and Francis Trico, as they have done for many years, are in charge of day-to-day operations in Sotogrande and dealing with our
clients. At the end of the year I expect to spend more time here. Due to these absences some people may have thought that I had left Sotogrande, but I have absolutely no intention of running out on my old clients. Moreover, in Sotogrande we are lucky in that the crisis has not affected us so much, because it’s an area of high quality”. A good opportunity This project in the Emirates arrived at a good time. “It’s been good for us due to the slump in the market in Spain, although this doesn’t mean that we have stopped working here; we will continue with Arcos Gardens, two months ago we started building a block of flats at Gibraltar Marina and we are preparing a mixed-use project in Campo de Gibraltar. And I haven’t even mentioned our villas in Sotogrande, which are the symbol of our success and continue to
bring us great satisfaction”, says McLundie, who has also just finished a project for the total refurbishment of the Las Brisas Clubhouse (Nueva Andalucía) and the construction of a new pro shop.Since he started to work in Sotogrande in 1991, Colin McLundie estimates that he has built 150 villas, a spectacular figure which he attributes to having had “a lot of luck and support from our clients and friends. I think we have provided a good service and this is why clients put their trust in us time and again”. An Andalusian touch McLundie’s personal interpretation of Andalusian Architecture over the course his career has been the source of much of his recognition and this style will now be transported to Abu Dhabi where, he asserts, "there are many similarities with the Andalusian idios-

El Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos de Cádiz celebró el pasado 22 de mayo su sesión mensual de la Comisión de Urbanismo, dedicada al Decreto 43/2008 “regulador de las condiciones de implantación y funcionamiento de los campos de golf en Andalucía”. La Comisión, que preside Nicolás Moncada, quiso abrir el debate que ha suscitado la nueva normativa, invitando también a profesionales del sector y trasladando la sesión a una zona donde el turismo de golf es de especial relevancia. La presentación, a la que asistió el concejal de Urbanismo del Ayuntamiento de San Roque, José Antonio Ledesma, fue a cargo del arquitecto Ángel de Pradas y en la mesa redonda participaron el decano del Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos, Ramón Picó; el presidente de la
Comisión de Urbanismo, Nicolás Moncada; el presidente de Promotur, Ramón Dávila; el director técnico de Sotogrande S.A., José Cano, y el representante del Grupo Ecologista Verdemar, Mariano Nicolás Gil. En la ponencia se aplaudió la iniciativa de mejorar la calidad ambiental y urbanística de los campos de golf y de modernizar las instalaciones para optimizar al máximo los recursos hídricos, la reutilización del agua así como otras medidas de protección medioambiental. Los ponentes también criticaron la enorme dificultad de cumplir algunos aspectos que el decreto promulga, así como la idea de la administración autonómica de regular la construcción de campos de golf introduciendo novedades en cuanto a las condiciones urbanísticas para implantación de los campos, complicando la tramitación en exceso, lo que podría suponer un
retraso injustificado en la ejecución de este tipo de complejos turístico-deportivos, con las consecuencias que ello podría desencadenar en una comunidad donde el turismo es un pilar básico de la economía.

Chairman of Grupo HCP, José Luis García, named ‘Best Editor of 2007’ The chairman of Grupo HCP, José Luis García, has received the award for ‘Best Editor of the Year 2007’ from the Spanish Association of Periodic Publication Publishers (Spanish initials AEEPP), which last night handed at Madrid over prizes to the best publications of the year as part of the “558 Publications Night” event. The gala dinner and award ceremony provided an opportunity for the 150 professionals from the sector that were guests at the event to share impressions. The event was attended by planning and purchasing managers from the most important agencies and media centres, heads of advertising of big publicity firms and many other representatives from the publishing sector, as well as a broad representation of authorities.
In addition to the prizes awarded to various editors and professionals of the media and advertising sector, the association acknowledged Alfredo Landa, Nicolás Sarkozy, Gemma Mengual, Adif, Fundación la Caixa, Madrid 2016, Eduardo Punset, Manu Leguineche and the National Transplant Organisation. The association also held its annual meeting, in which it re-elected Arsenio Escolar as its chairman. La Sotosunwalk se celebró el pasado 24 de mayo en Sotogrande con una buena afluencia de participantes, que disfrutaron de una mañana de sol espléndida en su carrera en pro de la lucha contra el cáncer de mama, pues todos los fondos recogidos se dedicarán
a financiar investigaciones sobre esta enfermedad. Ataviados con las camisetas de la organización, que llevan impreso un sujetador, o bien con su propia indumentaria alusiva, los participantes de la Sotosunwalk 2008 pusieron la nota divertida en la mañana de Sotogrande. La
salida, tras un breve calentamiento en grupo, se produjo sobre las 9 de la mañana en las inmediaciones del Colegio Internacional y desde allí los corredores y caminantes emprendieron la marcha hacia el pub Flaherty, donde estaba situada la meta tras 18 kilómetros de ruta a pie.

Reconocido el valor cultural de la casa club del RCGS, la Casa Zóbel y la Casa Biddle
La Junta protegerá tres edificios de Sotogrande por su interés arquitectónico

Sotogrande es bien conocido por sus magníficas villas y sus majestuosas edificaciones, de hecho muchas de ellas cuentan con un incalculable valor por su diseño e historia. Precisamente, a medidados de mayo la Junta de Andalucía ha reconocido la importancia arquitectónica de varias de sus villas y por ello se incluirán en el primer Registro Andaluz de Arquitectura Contemporánea algunos de los edificios más destacados de la urbanización. En total se protegerán tres edificaciones emblemáticas, a la que hay que sumar el Hotel NH Sotogrande, que fue registrado en 2007. Las que ahora aspiran a ser incluidas en este catálogo, son la sede del Real Club de Golf Sotogrande, construida en 1963 por Luis Gutiérrez Soto; la Casa Zóbel, una obra de José Antonio Coderch ejecutada en 1970; y la Casa Biddle, construida en 1966 por Francisco Javier Carvajal. Sotogrande es así una de las urbanizaciones más valoradas, ya que estos tres edificios han sido los únicos incluidos en el estudio en todo San Roque y sólo dos más se han registrado en este catálogo en el Campo de Gibraltar, ambos en Tarifa. Protección De esta manera, los edificios catalogados estarán protegidos especialmente por la Junta, aunque aún no se ha decidido el grado en que se plasmará esta protección. Fuentes de la Consejería de Cultura explicaron que la declaración de Bien de Interés Cultural, o su tramitación como tal, suponen que el inmueble se debe conservar, “pero cada uno tiene normas particulares, en las que se especifica

asegura la conservación de varios edificios emblemáticos tanto por su valor arquitectónico como por el histórico que tienen estas construcciones dentro de la breve historia de la urbanización.
Para ello, se han tenido en cuenta valores como el arquitecto encargado de su diseño, su estado actual de uso y conservación, el valor emocional en el conjunto de la sociedad en la que se ubica o la representatividad de algún movimiento cultural o urbanístico del pasado siglo. Todos ellos cumplen con estas características. La sede del Real Club de Golf de Sotogrande es todo un símbolo de la urbanización por ser donde se gestó la pasión de la urbanización por este deporte. La Casa Biddle es famosa por haber contado en sus más de 40 años de historia con importantes huéspedes y la Casa Zóbel es la única obra en la zona de José Antonio Coderch, reconocido como el más importante arquitecto catalán posterior a la II Guerra Mundial. Valoración El director general de la Entidad Urbanística de Conservación (EUC) de Sotogrande, Alex Medina, ha destacado al conocer este reconocimiento de la Junta que para la comunidad de la zona “es un orgullo”. “Sotogrande tiene una arquitectura muy especial, aunque representativa de los 60. Aquí han trabajado algunos de los más afamados arquitectos españoles, dejando edificios notables”, explica Alex Medina. El director de la EUC puntualiza, además, que “todos estos edificios se identifican con Sotogrande, es el caso de la casa club del RCGS. Su diseño es valorado por todos los residentes. Además, creo que estos edificios no sólo destacan por su valor arquitectónico, de igual o mayor importancia es el valor histórico de estos inmuebles”.

El término municipal cuenta con 15 bienes de interés cultural
San Roque, el municipio del Campo de Gibraltar con más monumentos catalogados

Hasta doce monumentos o conjuntos históricos están catalogados en el municipio de San Roque. A estos hay que sumar los tres edificios de Sotogrande que próximamente serán incluidos en el Registro Andaluz de Arquitectura Contemporánea, es decir, un total de 15. Datos que sin duda dan cuenta del valor artístico que engloba todo el término, que registra un mayor número de monumentos catalogados de todo el Campo de Gibraltar. En la Oficina de Turismo de San Roque son conocedores de la importancia que tienen estos registros elaborados por la Junta de Andalucía, ya que sirven para atraer turistas. De hecho, este año una de las propuestas más interesantes de esta delegación es dar a conocer a los visitantes los valores más destacados del municipio, algo que ya se está consiguiendo con las visitas guiadas. Ahora, el nuevo registro de arquitectura del siglo XX, ofrece una nueva perspectiva turísti-
ca al municipio. No sólo son valorados edificios que por su antigüedad e historia sirven de símbolo del municipio, sino que una urbanización relativamente joven como Sotogrande consigue el reconocimiento de la Junta como un enclave con inmuebles con un valor cultural que debe ser preservado. Hasta ahora los doce monumentos que cuentan con el reconocimiento de la Consejería de Cultura son Carteia, el Palacio de los Gobernadores, la Iglesia de Santa María La Coronada, el centro histórico, la Cueva de la Horadada, Torre Carbonera, Torre Guadiaro, Torre del Rocadillo, Torre quebrada de Guadiaro, la plaza de toros, Torre Cartagena y el Hotel NH de Sotogrande. Desde la delegación de Turismo apuntan que “esta nueva catalogación es muy interesante para nosotros. San Roque siempre ha destacado por contar con una gran cantidad de bienes culturales reconocidos, pero ahora se está teniendo en cuenta el movimiento moderno plasmado en
la arquitectura de Sotogrande”. De esta manera, se abre una nueva vía para que San Roque siga registrando reconocimientos, ya que por el momento la Junta ha destacado cuatro inmuebles de Sotogrande, pero sin duda existen otros ejemplos arquitectónicos destacables entre la multitud de villas de la urbanización.

Antonio Corrales pensó en reduccir los huecos y la profundidad de los alojamientos que, por otra parte, cuentan con pequeñas parcelas ajardinadas independientes para permitir a los ocupantes disfrutar con privacidad del aire libre. El alzado, en una sola altura, se adapta mediante terrazas a los desniveles del terreno observándose una sección con variada gama de soluciones constructivas. Las cubiertas inclinadas de tejas y los paramentos blancos constituyen discretas referencias a la arquitectura local.

Cultural value of the RCGS clubhouse, the Zóbel house and the Biddle houses is acknowledged
The Junta will protect three Sotogrande buildings due to their architectural interest Sotogrande is well known for its magnificent villas and majestic buildings, in fact many of them are of incalculable value due to their design and history. In midMay the Junta, the Andalusian Regional Government, acknowledged the architectural importance of many of its villas and as a result some of the most notable buildings of the resort will be included in the first Andalusian Registry of Contemporary Architecture. In total, three emblematic buildings will be protected, in addition to NH Sotogrande, which was registered in 2007. The buildings that are now aspiring to be included in this catalogue are the Real Club de Golf Sotogrande headquarters, built in 1963 by Luis Gutiérrez Soto; Casa Zóbel, a project by José Antonio Coderch executed in 1970; and Casa Biddle, built in 1966 by Francisco Javier Carvajal. Sotogrande is one of the most highly valued resorts, as these three buildings are the only architectural specimens in San Roque to be included in the study and only two more have been registered in this catalogue in Campo de Gibraltar, both in Tarifa. Sources at the Regional Ministry of Culture explained that status as an Asset of Cultural Interest, or a building’s administration as such, means that the property has to be preserved, “but each case has its own rules, specifying what can and what can’t be done”. They cannot be demolished, although their use can be changed and, in some cases, partial modifications can be made, albeit, from now on, for any change they will need permission from the DirectorateGeneral of Cultural Assets. Naturally this acknowledgement adds value to Sotogrande, ensuring the preservation of various emblematic buildings due both to the architectural and historical value of these constructions within the short history of the resort.

The veredict The general manager of the Sotogrande’s Urban Conservation Entity (Spanish initials EUC), Alex Medina, stated upon hearing about this acknowledgement from the Junta that for the local community it is “a source of pride”. “Sotogrande has some very special architecture, although it’s representative of the 1960s. Some of Spain’s most famous architects have worked here, leaving notable buildings”, Alex Medina explains. The manager of the EUC also points out that “all of these buildings are identified with Sotogrande and this is certainly the case of the RCGS clubhouse. Its design is valued highly by all residents. I also believe that, in addition to their architectural value, of equal or greater importance is the historical value of these properties”.

San Roque is the Campo de Gibraltar municipality with the most monuments catalogued 12 monuments and historical sites in the municipality of San Roque have been catalogued. These will be joined by the three Sotogrande buildings that will soon be included in the Andalusian Registry of Contemporary Architecture, making a total of 15. These figures undoubtedly exemplify the artistic value of the municipal area, which has more catalogued monuments than any other municipality of Campo de Gibraltar. At the San Roque Tourist Office they are aware of the importance of these registries put together by the Andalusian Regional Government, as they help to attract tourists. In fact, this year one of the most interesting proposals from the tourist office is to raise visitors’ awareness of the most outstanding features of the municipality, something which it is achieving through its guided tours. The new registry of 20th-Century architecture now offers a new
perspective of the municipality for tourists. In addition to the buildings that due to their age and history act as a symbol of the municipality, the Junta now recognises the relatively young resort of Sotogrande as an enclave that is home to properties which have a cultural value that must be preserved. The 12 monuments that have until now received acknowledgment from the Regional Ministry of Culture are: Carteia, Palacio de los Gobernadores, Iglesia de Santa María La Coronada, the historic centre, Cueva de la Horadada, Torre Carbonera, Torre Guadiaro, Torre del Rocadillo, Torre quebrada de Guadiaro, the bullring, Torre Cartagena and Hotel NH de Sotogrande. The Tourist Board indicates that “this new cataloguing is very positive for us. San Roque has always stood out as a place with a large number of recognised cultural assets, but now they are taking into
account the modern movement expressed in the architecture of Sotogrande”. By doing so, a new channel has been opened through which San Roque can continue to receive recognition, as for the time being the Junta has highlighted four Sotogrande buildings, but there are undoubtedly more outstanding architectural specimens among the resort’s great many villas.

Hotel NH Sotogrande, the pioneer Last year, one of the first buildings to be included in the recently created Andalusian Registr y of Contemporary Architecture was Hotel NH Sotogrande, due to its unique architecture. The hotel is shaped in such a way that, starting from a central space used for reception and services, two spacious wings emerge, made up of independent sections used for the rooms. The rooms are deployed in a series of steps, adapting to the topography of the land. To offer relief from the high summer tempera-
tures, the Madrid-based architect José Antonio Corrales decided to reduce the cavities and depth of the accommodation, which also has small independent landscaped plots where the occupants can enjoy being outdoors in privacy. The elevation, of just one floor, adapts by way of terraces to the slope of the land, and there is a section which employs a varied range of construction solutions. The sloping tile roofs and white faces constitute discrete references to local architecture.

The first Andalusian Registry of Contemporary Architecture for the protection and preservation of buildings built in the 20th Century in the region includes three Sotogrande properties: Real Club de Golf Sotogrande, Casa Zóbel and Casa Biddle. It is the first time an institutional body (a dependant of the Junta, the Andalusian Regional Government) has officially acknowledged buildings belonging to the resort, so we decided to inform people on the street of this selection and find out the views of residents of Sotogrande and its surrounding area.

San Enrique vive intensamente su tradicional Romería

Cientos de vecinos de San Enrique de Guadiaro disfrutaron el fin de semana del 17 y 18 de mayo de una estupenda jornada festiva. La Romería de Nuestra Señora de Fátima, la patrona de la localidad, tuvo su momento más intenso la mañana del domingo, cuando se celebró la tradicional misa rociera y el traslado de la imagen hasta el río. Numerosos vecinos acompañaron a la imagen de la Virgen en su traslado desde la Parroquia hasta una zona habilitada para la Romería junto al río. Esta celebración, un año más, ha vuelto a demostrar que se trata de una de las actividades más participativas y coloristas del municipio, gracias a la participación masiva de los vecinos. El Instituto Municipal de Fiestas y Juventud (IMFJ), la Comisión de Fiestas de San Enrique, la Hermandad de Nues-
tra Señora de Fátima y la Peña Caballista Los Álamos fueron los encargados de elaborar un amplio programa de actos para el disfrute de los vecinos durante todo el fin de semana.
Aunque el momento grande se vivió el domingo, la fiesta comenzó la noche anterior con una verbena popular y la elección de las Reinas y Damas de San Enrique.

San Enrique enjoys traditional Romería with intensity On the weekend of May 17 and 18 hundreds of San Enrique de Guadiaro residents enjoyed a magnificent festive atmosphere. The Romería (a procession) of Nuestra Señora de Fátima, the patron saint of the locality, reached its zenith on the morning of the Sunday, when the traditional rociera mass was held and the image was carried to the river. A large number of locals accompanied the image of the Virgin from the Parish Church to the area prepared for the Romería alongside the river. Once again this celebration demonstrated that it is one of the most participative and colourful activities of the municipality,
thanks to the mass participation of residents. The Municipal Institute of Festivals and Youth (Spanish initials IMFJ), the San Enrique Festival Committee, the Brotherhood of Nuestra Señora de Fátima and the Los Álamos Horsemen were responsible for organising the extensive schedule of activities for the enjoyment of residents throughout the weekend. Although the main event was on the Sunday, the party started the night before with a popular night festival and the election of the Queens (Reinas) and Ladies (Damas) of San Enrique.

Después de la celebración en mayo de las ferias de Castellar, Los Barrios, Jimena y Estepona en junio toma el relevo la Feria Real de Algeciras, que se celebrará del 21 al 29 de junio; aunque días antes también Marbella celebrará el 11 de junio la festividad de su patrón, San Bernabé. Otra fiesta tradicional que sacudirá todos los municipios del Campo de Gibraltar y de la Costa del Sol se producirá el 23 de junio con la festividad de la Noche de San Juan, donde la costumbre manda realizar hogueras a pie de playa durante toda la noche para calmar los malos augurios. La población de San Martín del Tesorillo también vivirá en junio su fiesta mayor, del 11 al 15 de junio, Feria del Cor-
pus, que por decisión del Ayuntamiento de la ELA este año se ha retrasado varias semanas. Y ya en el mes de julio llegará también la Velada y Fiestas de La Línea de la Concepción, del 11 al 20; la festividad
de la Virgen del Carmen, 16 de julio,con la feria de Torreguadiaro; la feria de Guadiaro del día 3 al 6; y la Feria Mayor de Estepona, que se celebra cada año también la primera semana de este mes.

El plazo de ejecución de la vía de servicio de Pueblo Nuevo finaliza a últimos de agosto, sin embargo, Fomento espera poder tener la obra lista a primeros de agosto por lo que estos días se trabaja en la zona a buen ritmo. El Ayuntamiento de San Roque ha indicado que ha pedido a la empresa concesionaria de las obras que haga lo posible por tener lista la obra antes de que se entre plenamente en el verano. En la actualidad las obras están “muy avanzadas”, según el concejal Juan José Guillén. De hecho ya se está trabajando en los dos extremos de la obra, en la zona comercial de Pueblo Nuevo, a la altura de Valeriano, y en la rotonda situada junto al paso inferior
El bulevar de Torreguadiaro está plagado de gatos callejeros, según denuncia una vecina, quien indica que “nohay más que acercarse al contenedor que hay un poco más debajo de la casa ‘El Recreo’ para ver cómo más de una veintena de felinos se agolpan entre la basura en busca de algo para comer”. A su juicio es “una vergüenza. Los pobres animales están en malas condiciones y encima dan un aspecto muy negativo a la zona”. Por ello considera que es urgente frenar esta situación, siempre respetando a los animales. “Sería bueno llevarlos a otro sitio donde fueran felices, comieran cada día y no molestasen”.

All you have to do is approach the container just past the “El Recreo” house to see how twenty or so felines crowd around the rubbish looking for something to eat. It’s a disgrace. The poor animals are in bad health and they also give off a very negative image of the area. I think the situation has to be rectified urgently, although naturally always respecting the animals. mitirá adecuar el actual PGOU para posibilitar la construcción en la zona baja de la barriada de la Paz por parte de la Junta de Andalucía de más de un centenar de viviendas de Protección Oficial, así como el ordenamiento de suelo terciario.

T
he global credit crunch and the resultant slowing of Spain’s housing market has hit tens of thousands of expatriate Britons – as well as other northern Europeans – who own holiday or retirement homes in Andalucia. Media reports suggest some have returned to Britain, hit by the recent weakening of the Euro against the pound as well as rising Spanish prices of food and commodities. Others, who failed to obtain sound legal advice before acquiring Spanish properties, are threatened with repossession or demolition as the authorities act against rogue builders and developers along the Costa del Sol and elsewhere. These problems, as well as others involving Spain’s tougher taxation laws, are among those which the skilled staff of Hassans Sotogrande, S.L. in Spain, have had to tackle since opening their office in January this year. “Tax is a major problem for many expatriates some of whom don’t even realize that they have tax obligations in Spain and, almost as important for many of those coming to us, is the need to structure the properties they hold in terms of the inheritance and capital gains taxes involved,” says Raul Gutierrez who heads the Sotogrande team having spent the past five previous years running the Spanish section of Hassans, Gibraltar’s leading international law firm. Almost two decades ago, Hassans looked at the possibility of a joint venture with a Spanish law firm. “That was in the 1980s, but the climate wasn’t right,” he recalls. However, as more and more expatriates from Britain and other northern European countries settled in Spain – and particularly along the global golf-course magnets of the southern Costas – many turned to Hassans for advice on a range of issues and the need for staff with a dedicated knowledge of the intricacies of Spanish property law, personal and property tax issues and inheritance laws, became obvious to Provasoli and Levy. “Thus about eight years ago, we decided to have another go – but this time keeping a Spanish team in Gibraltar, but developing it as a separate division within the firm,” Provasoli explains. “This way, we could ensure that when clients living in Spain or planning to settle in Spain – or even setting up a business there – looked to us for guidance, we could provide them with top-flight advice and would know exactly what we doing.” “It was important to develop the Spanish team here in Gibraltar before re-locating them to a Spanish office in Spain this year. El colegio Gloria Fuertes de Pueblo Nuevo de Guadiaro ya tiene casi listo el programa de las tradicionales Jornadas de las Nacionalidades, que este año se celebrarán en su quinta edición entre el 17 y el 19 de junio. Tal y como explica el director del centro, José Antonio Fernández, estas jornadas nacieron en 2004 al reflexionar sobre la realidad de la comunidad educativa con el aumento de alumnos extranjeros. “Entonces nos dimos cuenta de que no podíamos obviar este tema y que debíamos trabajar con dos objetivos claros: enriquecernos culturalmente todos los miembros de la comunidad educativa y conseguir una mayor integración de toda la sociedad”, explica Fernández. Junto a las Jornadas de las Nacionalidades, el colegio organiza diferentes cursos en el centro para profesores, padres y alumnos para conocer el conjunto de las riquezas culturales de los aproximadamente 25 países de los que provienen los escolares.
El próximo 17 de junio, todo el trabajo desarrollado a lo largo del año se plasmará en el inicio de las quintas Jornadas de las Nacionalidades, una actividad organizada por el colegio y abierta a todos los vecinos en la que se comprueba cómo padres e hijos trabajan por sacar adelante las diferentes actividades programadas y el orgullo que sienten de dar a conocer aspectos culturales de sus países de origen.

Complete programme of the 5th Nationalities Symposium The Gloria Fuertes school in Pueblo Nuevo de Guadiaro has almost finished preparing the schedule for its customary Jornadas de las Nacionalidades, or Nationalities Symposium, which this year will be held for the fifth time from June 17 to 19. As the head teacher of the school, José Antonio Fernández, explains, the symposium was born in 2004 as a result of the reality of the educational community with the increase in foreign pupils. “We realised that we could not ignore the matter and that we had to work with two clear objectives: to enrich all of the members of the educational community culturally and to achieve greater integra-
tion throughout society”, explained Fernández. Alongside the Nationalities Symposium, the centre organises various courses at the school for teachers, parents and pupils, to raise awareness of the cultural riches of the approximately 25 countries that the schoolchildren come from. El Alcornoque De porte colgante cuando es adulto y no acusa severas podas, fácil verlo así en dehesas donde no comparte su espacio vital. Cuando lo observamos en bosques tupidos su copa crece más erguida aminorando el calibre del tronco. Puede alcanzar los 25 mt de altura. Viste ramas y tronco de una corteza característica siendo el único de la familia de los Quercus que está dotado de ella. Los alcornoques con más de dos décadas son cada 10 años desvestidos de su corteza; su extracción es el principal aprovechamiento de sus recursos selvícolas. Prefiere prosperar en terrenos sin cal y aprecia su profundidad. Es un árbol autóctono de la cuenca mediterránea occidental. En general, estos territorios son muy exigentes desde el punto de vista biológico obligando a las especies a superar altas temperaturas en verano, fuertes erosiones del terreno, etc. El alcornoque ha desarrollado hojas pequeñas y coriáceas que impiden la evaporación del agua y su corteza le ayuda a soportar sequías y protegerlo de los incendios. Sus bosques podrían haber caído en el anonimato como los de otras muchas especies, o haber sucumbido al hacha del hombre para convertirse en madera, leña o carbón pero su corteza ligera, compresible e ignífuga ha sido y es material apreciado por la industria de tapamiento de vinos. Después de dos siglos de explotación intensiva, los profundos cambios climáticos, el aumento de la contaminación, el sobrepastoreo podrían ser factores incitantes que están ayudando a que la principal enfermedad de este árbol denominada La Seca del Alcornoque, prolifere de for-
ma importante en estas dos últimas décadas. Su fuerte carácter mediterráneo lo hace un excelente protagonista, junto al olivo, en proyectos de ajardinamiento privado donde puede lucir su vestimenta de corcho.Por su lento crecimiento es recomendable incorporar calibres superiores a 35 cm incrementando su impacto visual. Una ubicación espaciosa en el jardín para desarrollar su porte majestuoso y unos terrenos profundos a poder ser aireados estimularán su crecimiento y vigor. Con respecto a las operaciones de mantenimiento es conveniente restringir la poda a la mínima necesaria, siendo importante para la prevención de enfermedades fúngicas. Cuando se realizan obras de construcción y los ejemplares adultos tienen que ser trasladados, es importante realizar el trasplante en dos fases si queremos obtener un porcentaje alto de éxito. El primer invierno se realiza una poda circular de raíces, cavando un surco en forma de circunferencia a unos 40 cm del tronco, rellenándolo de tierra otra vez para al invierno siguiente escayolarlo y proceder a la extracción del cepellón.

The last day will begin with a farewell to the 6th year pupils and in the afternoon there will be a ‘coexistence’ party organised by the parents association (Spanish initials AMPA).
The cork oak With a crown that tends to hang down when the tree is an adult and no signs of severe pruning… this is the cork oak common to meadows where it does not share its living space. When we see it in dense forests its crown grows more upright, reducing the width of the trunk. It can reach a height of 25 metres. Its branches and trunk are covered in a characteristic bark and it is the only species in the Quercus family which has this. A cork oak over 20 years old is stripped of its bark every 10 years; the extraction of the cork is its main use as a silvicultural resource. It prospers in soil without lime and appreciates depth. It’s an indigenous tree of the western Mediterranean basin. In general, these regions are very demanding from a biological point of view, forcing the species to deal with high temperatures in the summer, intense soil erosion etc. The cork oak has developed small and coriaceous leaves which prevent water from evaporating and its bark helps it to survive periods of drought and to protect it from fires. Its forest could have fallen into anonymity like so many other species, or have succumbed to the axes of men to become timber, firewood or charcoal, but its light, compressible and fire resistant bark has been
and still is a material valued by the wine bottling industry. Following two centuries of intensive exploitation, major changes to the climate, the increase in pollution and overgrazing could be factors behind the significant proliferation over the last 20 years of this tree’s main disease, called dry canker. Other factors contributing to the acceleration of the tree’s decline are the fungal diseases which affect the roots and aid the proliferation of attacks from insects that devour leaves and new shoots. Its strong Mediterranean character makes it an excellent feature, alongside the olive tree, in private landscaping projects in which it can sport its attractive cork outfit. Due to its slow rate of growth it is advisable to incorporate widths of over 35 centimetres to increase its visual impact. A spacious position in the garden will allow it to develop its majestic demeanour, and deep soil, preferably with aeration, will stimulate its growth and vigour. With regard to maintenance operations, it is advisable to limit pruning to the necessary minimum; this is important for preventing fungal diseases. When building work is carried out and an adult tree has to be moved, it is important to carry out the transplantation in two phases in order to have a high chance of success. The first winter a circular pruning of the roots is carried out, digging a furrow to form a circumference 40 centimetres from the trunk. This is refilled with earth the following winter, and the tree is put in plaster before proceeding with the extraction of the root ball.

Además se nombraron Sanroqueños del Año a Juan Manuel Carrasco Solís y José Luis Navarro Raya. por la ministra de Medio Ambiente, Elena Espinosa, el próximo lunes, 2 de junio, en Madrid. La concesión de la mención, en su décima edición, fue dada a conocer por el alcalde, José Vázquez, que manifestó que “para San Roque es una gran satisfacción ser elegida entre cientos de municipios españoles y algunos extranjeros por su limpieza”.
Para el alcalde es destacable que “obser vadores independientes den este tipo de galardón desde hace cinco años al municipio”. En este sentido argumenta: “Ello supone un compromiso de seguir en la misma línea de calidad de nuestro servicios para mantener y aumentar el número de premios y su calidad”.

Green Flag for being a ‘responsible’ municipality San Roque has received the ‘Green Flag-Responsible Municipality’ award in the fields of Waste, Cleanliness, Landscaping, Environmental Education and Public Participation. The prize was awarded by the Federation of Independent Users and Consumers. The award will be handed over by Environment Minister Elena Espinosa on Monday June 2, in Madrid. The concession of the acknowledgement, an initiative which is in its tenth year, was announced by the mayor, José Vázquez, who
said that “for San Roque it’s a great satisfaction to be chosen from among hundreds of Spanish municipalities and some foreign ones for its cleanliness”. The mayor highlighted the fact that “independent observers have been awarding this kind of prize to the municipality for five years”. In this regard he argues that: “We are committed to continuing in this vein to ensure the quality of our services in order to maintain and increase the number of awards and their quality”.

aben ustedes que El Periódico de Sotogrande ha venido contando cuantas novedades se han producido sobre el caso de los cazatesoros del Odyssey, y lo hemos hecho porque el expolio principal se ha producido frente a Sotogrande y porque el segundo barco que utilizaron para rastrear nuestros fondos estuvo atracado varios meses en nuestro puerto. Pero lo más importante es que la ciudadanía de la zona conozca de primera mano el engaño que ha diseñado el Gobierno para liberar de responsabilidad a todos los inútiles e indocumentados que han participado en este largo expolio de cerca de diez años de duración. La teoría de la fragata Mercedes que se han sacado de la manga es un dislate sin precedentes: primero porque los arqueólogos portugueses ya trataron de encontrarla en varias ocasiones sin resultado alguno, trabajando con los testimonios extraídos de sus archivos y el barco descansa a escasas millas de la costa de Faro, no a 1.200 metros de profundidad y a más de 200 millas como asegura el Gobierno español por boca de sus responsables de Cultura. Además, y según consta en los archivos lusos, la fragata estalló en mil pedazos cuando se incendió su santabárbara y sus restos se esparcieron varias millas. Por otra parte, nuestros gobernantes parece que se empeñan en olvidar los diez años que los barcos de Odyssey Marine Exploration estuvieron trabajando en aguas españolas del Mediterráneo, negando que fueran nuestras y jugando al gato y al ratón con las fuerzas de seguridad. Ahora, y de forma milagrosa, se apuntan a una posibilidad basada en la desaparición del barco principal de Odyssey Marine durante “cinco días” en los que apagaron su sistema de posicionamiento AISLIVE y no pudimos seguirlo. Según el Gobierno, justamente en esas escasas CIEN HORAS los piratas fueron capaces de encontrar el pecio que no hallaron en cincuenta años los portugueses y sacaron desde 1.200 metros de profundidad nada más y nada menos que medio millón de
monedas y otros objetos más voluminosos de difícil extracción; algo irrisorio y un insulto a la inteligencia de quienes sabemos algo de estos complicados rescates. Con esta cómica posibilidad tratan de tapar las responsabilidades de la ‘banda’ de Exteriores que se empeñó en dar un permiso tras otro a estos piratas para que violasen de forma continuada y sin ningún control nuestro mar territorial, a pesar de las constantes advertencias para que lo prohibiesen que les hicieron tanto la Armada Española como el Servicio Marítimo de la Guardia Civil. Pero podían más los anhelos del señor Pons, director de la Oficina de Cooperación con Europa y Norteamérica, que se había comprometido con británicos y norteamericanos a dejarles trabajar sobre un imaginario naufragio británico, el Sussex, la auténtica tapadera de este expolio, a cambio de ciertas ventajas en la negociación sobre el conflicto de Gibraltar. Al final, no hubo avances con los mercaderes del Peñón, y los piratas se llevaron de nuestro mar todo cuanto quisieron; una tomadura de pelo de corte anglosajón. Con la irrisoria ‘jugada de la Mercedes’, que además Odyssey Marine también niega, pero defendida a capa y espada por el Gobierno desde el principio de este escándalo, usando como altavoz al diario El País, esperan desviar la atención hacia el Atlántico, dejando mudos y silenciosos diez años de ignominia y responsabilidades de todo tipo por parte de la clase política. Por eso, y de una forma muy significativa, el letrado de España ante la Corte de Tampa, James Goold, dijo en Madrid la semana pasada: “A veces lo que interesa a España puede estar muy alejado de la verdad”. Pero el impecable trabajo del Juzgado de la Línea de la Concepción sigue su impertérrito camino de búsqueda de responsabilidades y los fundadores de Odyssey están acusados de expolio en nuestras aguas y hay una orden de busca y captura contra ellos. Manuel Melero, concejal de Seguridad de San Roque, está dando pasos muy importantes a través de la Corporación sanroqueña para que se conozca la verdad. Y dentro de poco tendremos novedades y los lectores de este medio serán los primeros en conocerlas.

In the end, no advances were made with the merchants of the Rock, and the pirates took from our seas whatever they chose: a mickey-take of Anglo-Saxon proportions. With the laughable ‘Mercedes ploy’ (which Odyssey Marine also denies but which the Government has fought tooth and nail to defend since the emergence of the scandal, using the El País newspaper as its loudspeaker) they hope to divert the attention to the Atlantic and conceal ten years of disgrace and liabilities of all kinds among the political classes. This is why, in such a meaningful manner, the lawyer representing Spain in the Tampa courts, James Goold, said in Madrid last week: “Some times, that which is in Spain’s interest can be a long way from the truth”. But the impeccable work of the Línea de la Concepción Court continues its unperturbed search for liabilities, the founders of Odyssey are accused of plundering our waters and an arrest warrant for them has been issued. Manuel Melero, San Roque Security Councillor, is making significant progress through San Roque Municipal Council to unearth the truth. And soon we will have news, and the readers of this newspaper will be the first to know.

ou will be aware that El Periódico de Sotogrande has been keeping you informed of the news regarding the case of the Odyssey treasure hunters, and we have been doing so because the bulk of the plundering took place off the coast of Sotogrande, and because the second boat that they used to dredge our seabed was moored for several months in our harbour. But the most important thing for the public to know about is the ploy devised by our Government to free from blame the useless and unauthorised individuals who have taken part in this plundering which lasted near on ten years. The theory of the frigate the Mercedes which they have pulled from their sleeves is an unprecedented absurdity. I say this because Portuguese archaeologists had already tried to find it on several occasions to no avail, working with the evidence extracted from their archives, and the ship lies just a few miles from the coast of Faro, not at a depth of 1,200 metres and over 200 miles away, as the Spanish Government asserts via its Ministry of Culture officials. Moreover, according to the Portuguese archives, the frigate exploded into a thousand pieces when its powder store caught fire, and its remains were scattered over several miles. Furthermore, our leaders seem to be intent on forgetting the ten years in which the Odyssey Marine Exploration boats were working on Spanish Mediterranean waters, denying that they were ours and playing cat and mouse with the security forces. Now, miraculously, they are pointing towards a possibility based on the disappearance of the of Odyssey Marine’s main boat for a period of “five days”, in which they shut down their AISLive tracking system and we were unable to monitor them. According to the Government, it was precisely in these TEN HOURS in which the pirates found the remains that the Portuguese had been unable to find in fifty years, and from a depth of 1,200 metres extracted no

García Calvo camina 83.000 kilómetros por una promesa

Nada menos que 83.000 kilómetros a pie es lo que ha caminado José Antonio García Calvo para cumplir una promesa. Este gaditano, del Puerto de Santa María, estuvo a punto de morir cuando su barco naufragó en medio de aguas noruegas. El 31 de diciembre de 1998 el pesquero en el que el gaditano trabajaba se hundió y sólo él sobrevivió. Permaneció horas a flote aferrado a la esperanza de que alguien lo rescatara. Prometió a la Virgen del Carmen que si lograba salvarse haría una peregrinación a los principales santuarios de las religiones cristiana, musulmana y budista en agradecimiento. Y fue así como comenzó una aventura que ha durado casi ocho años y ha llevado a este hombre a recorrer medio mundo. El Tibet, Nepal, Roma o Rusia son sólo algunas de las paradas realizadas por este gaditano de 58 años a pie y con la única compañía de sus recuerdos y su mochila. Recientemente, José Antonio García Calvo llegó a Pueblo Nuevo. Su promesa había terminado y caminaba a paso firme para reencontrarse, por fin, con su hija y su nieta en el Puerto de Santa
María. Pocos kilómetros le restaban de su destino, pero las complicaciones hicieron que el recorrido se le hiciera más cuesta arriba que todos los kilómetros realizados en sus ocho años de peregrinar. Confesó, al respecto, que no era profeta en su tierra y que era aquí, precisamente, donde menos apoyo había recibido. “Siempre he dicho que los mayores enemigos de un peregrino son tres: el perro, el cura y los pies. Al llegar a mi tierra me he topado, además, con la pasividad. Me ha costado conseguir encontrar a alguien que me ayudara”, explica el aventurero emocionado. Retorno Aún así, las fuerzas no le flaquearon y, tras descansar un rato en la playa de Torreguadiaro y de comer un bocadillo en Pueblo Nuevo, este caminante prosiguió su ruta de retorno; el último tramo de un largo caminar. Se puso fin, de esta forma, a una historia que ha durado años, que ha sido seguida por los medios de comunicación del todo el mundo y que ha dejado constancia clara de que, sin duda, la fe de algunas personas mueve montañas y da fuerzas para recorrer el mundo entero, incluso, caminando.

García Calvo walks 83,000 kilometres to fulfil promise José Antonio García Calvo has walked no less than 83,000 kilometres to keep a promise. The gaditano, from Puerto de Santa María, was one the verge of death when his boat was shipwrecked in Norwegian waters. On December 31, 1998, the fishing boat that the Cadiz man was working on sank, and he was the only survivor. He remained afloat for hours, clinging to the hope that someone would rescue him. He promised the Virgin of Carmen that if he was saved he would go on a pilgrimage to the main sanctuaries of the Christian, Muslim and Buddhist religions in appreciation. And this was how an adventure which has lasted eight years and has taken this man half way around the world began. Tibet, Nepal, Rome and Russia are
just some of the places visited by this 58-year-old gaditano on foot, accompanied only by his memories and his rucksack. José Antonio García Calvo recently arrived in Pueblo Nuevo. His promise had been fulfilled and he was walking with a firm step to be reunited, at last, with his daughter and granddaughter in Puerto de Santa María. Just a few kilometres remained to his destination, but complications made the last leg more difficult that any other part of his journey during his eightyear pilgrimage. He admitted that he was certainly not a prophet in his own land and that here was precisely where the he received the least support. “I have always said that the pilgrim has three great enemies: the dog, the priest and the feet. When I arri-
ved in my own land I was also confronted with passiveness. I have found it very difficult to find people who would help me”, explained the emotional adventurer. Return Even so, he did not flag and, after resting a while on Torreguadiaro’s beach and eating a sandwich in Pueblo Nuevo, the walker continued on his return route, the last leg of a very long journey. And that was the end to a story which has lasted several years, which has been followed by the media all over the world and which has made it clear that, without doubt, the faith of some can move mountains and give them the strength to travel the entire world, even on foot.

La Asociación de Educación Ambiental y del Consumidor (ADEAC) y la Fundación para la Educación Ambiental (FEE) hicieron público el 28 de mayo en la Oficina del Parlamento Europeo en Madrid, la lista de banderas azules que ondearán este año y el Ayuntamiento de San Roque volvió a recibir un año más tres bandera azules: Torreguadiaro, Cala Sardina (ubicada entre Torreguadiaro y Manilva) y La Alcaidesa (compartida con el Ayuntamiento de La Línea). El Campo de Gibraltar fue galardonado con una Bandera Azul más, para el municipio de La Línea en la playa de Sobrevela. Un año más tanto Algeciras, Los Barrios como Tarifa, municipios con importantes litorales, se quedan sin banderas azules. En la Costa del Sol occidental el Ayuntamiento de Manilva vuelve a obtener, como el año pasado, dos banderas azules: en las playas de Sabinillas y La Colonia; y el Ayuntamiento de Estepona incrementa sus banderas azules de dos a tres sumándose a las playas de La Rada y El Cristo, la playa de El Padrón. En Cádiz se han concedido 15 banderas azules, seis menos que el año pasado. Por comunidades autónomas, Cataluña ocupa el primer lugar con 112 banderas, seguida de Galicia con 105, la Comunidad Valenciana con 100 y Baleares con 84; Andalucía ha obtenido 59 banderas, 13 menos que el año pa-

Torreguadiaro, Cala Sardina and Alcaidesa renew Blue Flag On May 28 the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) made the granting of the awards to the Blue Flag 2008 beaches public, and San Roque Municipal Council repeated last year’s success by obtain three Blue Flags: Torreguadiaro, Cala Sardina (located between Torreguadiaro and Manilva) and La Alcaidesa (shared with La Línea Municipal Council). Campo de Gibraltar received one more Blue Flag, for the Sobrevela beach in the municipality of La Línea. Once again, Algeciras, Los Barrios and Tarifa, municipalities with important coastlines, re-
main without any Blue Flags. On the western stretch of the Costa del Sol, Manilva Municipal Council once again obtained two Blue Flag awards, for the Sabinillas and La Colonia beaches, and Estepona Municipal Council increased its Blue Flag awards from two to three with the El Padrón beach joining La Rada and El Cristo. The Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) is a non-profit international private organisation, registered in Holland in 1982, which is not associated with any political party, religious beliefs or financial groups. Cu-
rrently, it groups together member branches or entities in 45 counties of Europe, South and North America, Africa, Asia and Oceania, which promote environmental education activities and join forces internationally in schemes such as: Blue Flags for beaches and marinas; Eco-schools, Young Reporters for the Environment; Forests in Schools; and the Green Key.

Las cifras de ocupación hotelera registradas durante abril y mayo, en torno al 60 por ciento, dejan vislumbrar buenos resultados de cara al verano que ya comienza. Pese al mal arranque del año, Salvador Vilches, presidente de la Asociación de Empresarios Hoteleros de la Costa del Sol (Aehcos) se muestra optimista. Opina que la actividad turística en este destino mantendrá su línea de crecimiento habitual en temporada alta. “Tras unos meses complicados y como se suele decir, esperamos que la tormenta deje paso a la calma y que el verano traiga buenos resultados para todos. Estoy convencido de que el verano irá bien”, subraya el presidente. Con todo listo para recibir a los miles de turistas que cada año copan la costa malagueña, los profesionales del sector se

El consejero de Turismo, Comercio y Deporte, Luciano Alonso, anunció recientemente que prevé un crecimiento para el sector del turismo en Andalucía del tres por ciento para finales de 2008 gracias a “una intensa promoción” del destino andaluz. In this vein, the Costa del Sol Tourist Board expects to see similar numbers to summer 2007, trusting that, at close, the year will see an increase in tourism similar to that seen last year. Last year, the region welcomed 9,518,000 visitors, seeing a 2.73% increase over 2006. In turn, the Andalusian Regional Government is also positive about the sector’s progress. The Saudis are also interested in the area, as can be seen by the considerable investments
they have made on the coast, such as Coral Beach. Estepona Town Hall has entered into a pre-agreement with a company that is linked to the Saudi Royal Family to build on a 600,000 square metre plot near the Las Dunas hotel. Arab Reda Alaywan, owner of the Las Dunas Hotel in Estepona and Los Monteros in Marbella, is the new owner of the Princesa Hotels, which are also located on the Malaga coast. The list, however, is endless. The investments are advantageous to the Malaga coast area, and help soften the negative impact of the sharp downturn in the real estate sector in a region that lives by and for tourism.

El Consistorio ha insistido en la necesidad de “trabajar en la prevención para evitar que los niveles de delincuencia sean alarmantes” y ha recordado que la administración central ha rechazado el proyecto en varias ocasiones esgrimiendo que los índices de delincuencia no alcanzan una situación de extrema gravedad.

Edificios como el Hotel Don Pepe, la plaza de toros de Puerto Banús, el Hotel Don Carlos, la Torre Real, Las Terrazas de Las Lomas del Marbella Club, todos ellos en Marbella; el conjunto Bahía Dorada de Estepona y el Bahía de Casares en este municipio, han sido propuestos para ser incluidos en el Catálogo en el primer Registro Andaluz de Arquitectura Contemporánea
y con ello contar con la protección de la Junta de Andalucía. Para ello, se han tenido en cuenta valores como el arquitecto encargado de su diseño, su estado actual de uso y conser vación, el valor emocional en el conjunto de la sociedad en la que se ubica o su representatividad de algún movimiento cultural o urbanístico del pasado siglo. Un equipo de 20 investigadores se han encargado de realizar esta catalogación divi-
diendo el siglo en diferentes periodos. Los catalogados en Estepona y Marbella responden a los últimos años, así, todos los edificios incluidos fueron realizados a partir de 1960, cuando se experimenta una relativa liberalización cultural y se produce la arquitectura del desarrollismo. En la provincia de Málaga se han incluido en este catálogo 119 inmuebles de 21 municipios y en toda Andalucía se han registrado más de mil.

Con respecto a lo que se hará en esta ubicación una vez que se elimine todo resto del edificio, se ha indicado que por el momento no se prevé ninguna edificación en este lugar, ya que es una zona protegida por Demarcación de Costas.
Que no nos falte de ná... La cosa parece que se va animando y por fin, aunque pelín tarde, ha llegado el calor hasta nuestra costa. Buen momento para disfrutar de los primeros rayos solares del verano e ir cogiendo bronceado, que buena falta nos hace, por cierto. Y a ver si de paso se van animando los acontecimientos sociales de la zona y con ellos, la noche de Sotogrande. A quien desde luego no le falta el sol es a la ‘incomprendida’ estatua que nos han plantado en la rotonda de entrada a Torreguadiaro, bueno, ni el sol, ni los complementos playeros. Y es que parece ser que, como era una tanto incatalogable, de forma muy astuta (que no sutil), alguien se ha atrevido a darle significado y qué mejor forma que vistiéndola para la playa. Así que con biquini, tubo y gafas de bucear se despertó una buena mañana la figura. Perfectamente ataviada. Y mucho mejor que en su estado natural, al menos, tiene más que ver con Torreguadiaro, digo yo. Y muy original, un to-
que que da buen rollo al entrar al pueblo, se lo aseguro. ¿O no sonrieron ustedes cuándo lo vieron? Sin duda, algo que hace pensar al que llega de fuera: “¡qué gente más simpática la que vive aquí!” Me quedo con la estatua disfrazada, por supuesto. Lo que también ha vuelto con el calor, y esperemos que cada vez con más fuerza, son los actos benéficos. En esta ocasión, otra buena excusa para reunirnos y ayudar a la AHUCE (Asociación de Huesos de Cristal en España). La cita de nuevo en Almenara Club, expertos ya en organizar con éxito actos sociales de esta envergadura, y los beneficios obtenidos a cargo del II Torneo de Golf, que reunió a un numeroso grupo de jugadores. Muchas firmas de los alrededores pusieron su granito de arena y también muchos comensales que pagaron su cubierto por una buena causa. Una muestra más de la enorme solidaridad de la que disfrutamos en esta zona y que esperamos siga así.

Remains of Prasa building to be recycled Although a month ago the Prasa building in Estepona was demolished, the site where the structure was located is still home to a mountain of rubble, which is now being separated for recycling. According to sources at Estepona Municipal Council, the machines can still be seen from the La Rada beach because
they are separating the materials for recycling and subsequent reuse. With regard to what will done with the site once the remains of the building have been removed, they indicated that for the time being there are no plans for construction as the area is protected by the Coastal Authorities.
At last it would seem things are picking up, albeit a bit late, and the heat has arrived on our coast. It’s a good time to enjoy the first rays of summer sun and start to get a tan, which will certainly do us good. And let’s see if in the meantime the area’s social events get going and, with them, the Sotogrande nightlife. At least the ‘misunderstood’ statue on the roundabout at the entrance to Torreguadiaro has not been short on sun, nor indeed on beach accessories. It would seem that, as it was a little on the unclassifiable side, shall we say, someone has ventured to give it meaning in an astute (if unsubtle) manner, and what better way than to dress it for the beach. So with a bikini, snorkel and goggles, the statue awoke one morning, perfectly attired. And much better than in its natural state: at least it now has more to with Torreguadiaro, I would say. Very original, a touch that gives you a good vibe when you enter the town, I assure you. Did
you not smile when you saw it? Without doubt it must be something that makes visitors think “what likeable people live here!” I’m all for the be-costumed statue, naturally. Another thing that has returned with the heat, and let’s hope with growing intensity, is the charity events, on this occasion another good excuse for getting together and helping AHUCE (the Spanish Brittle Bone Association). The event took place once again at Almenara Club, who are now experts in organising successful social events of this magnitude, and the funds were raised through the 2nd Golf Tournament, which brought together a large contingent of players. A large number of local companies did their bit, as did the many diners who contributed their cover charge to a good cause. Once again the enormous sense of solidarity of the people of the area was demonstrated, and let’s hope that it remains so.

El arquitecto José Herrera construirá 152 viviendas en San Roque

El estudio del arquitecto afincado en Sotogrande, José Herrera, ha sido el ganador del concurso convocado por el Ayuntamiento de San Roque para construir 152 viviendas de protección oficial en la zona de los cuarteles. El proyecto ganador, denominado ‘San Roque 1704’ contempla la creación de 152 viviendas de entre cuatro a un dormitorio, 211 plazas de garaje y 780 metros para locales comerciales. José Herrera ha sido finalmente el ganador de este concurso al que se presentaron 41 proyectos de arquitectos de toda España.
Además, junto a este concurso se convocó otro para 51 viviendas en la misma ubicación en el que el proyecto de Herrera ha quedado segundo. Sobre esta adjudicación el propio Herrera ha manifestado sentirse muy orgulloso por “tener la suerte de que sea mi estudio el que vaya a realizar este importante proyecto y más ahora que estamos en época de crisis”. El estudio de José Herrera se encuentra en la actualidad trabajando en el proyecto definitivo, aunque el propio arquitecto asegura que ha sido un trabajo muy elaborado debido a sus dimensiones. Una vez concluido este
trabajo se comenzarán las obras, algo que se espera para finales de este año. El jurado de este concurso ha valorado en la puntuación aspectos fundamentales como viabilidad urbanística y normativa; cumplimiento del programa y aprovechamientos; funcionalidad; viabilidad técnica y económica; calidad arquitectónica y plazo de redacción”. Sobre estas dos promociones,el Ayuntamiento espera que la promoción de 51 viviendas se oferte directamente a jóvenes menores de 35 años, mientras que las 151 restantes se harán al resto de ciudadanos.

Architect José Herrera to build 152 homes in San Roque The studio of the Sotograndebased architect, José Herrera, has been awarded a contract by San Roque Municipal Council to build 152 statesubsidised homes in the cuarteles (barracks) area. The winning project, going by the name of ‘San Roque 1704’, envisages the creation of 152 homes of between one and four bedrooms, 211 garage spaces and 780 square metres for business premises. José Herrera finally secured the contract, for which 41 projects by architects from all over Spain were put forward. In addition, another contract was put out to tender for 51 homes at the same location, and in this instance Herrera’s project was the second choice. Herrera himself said that he was very proud that “it was my studio that was fortunate enough to be selected to carry out this important project, and
even more so now that we are in a period of crisis”. José Herrera’s studio is currently working on the final project, although the architect states that it has been a very intricate job due to its dimensions. When the project has been completed the building work will begin, hopefully by the end of this year. The panel of judges that awarded the contract took into account fundamental aspects such as planning viability and regulations; compliance with the scheme and use of resources; functionality; technical and financial viability; architectural quality and drafting time. With regard to these two developments, the Municipal Council expects the 51-home development to be offered directly to under-35s, while the remaining 151 homes will go to other citizens.

Sesenta stands participan en la VIII Feria de Arte

Una carpa habilitada en El Ejido con sesenta stands ha acogido la exposición de productos realizados durante el curso 2007-2008 por los alumnos de la Universidad Popular (UP) de San Roque, mientras en el Teatro Juan Luis Galiardo han tenido lugar las actuaciones de los talleres de artes escénicas. Durante la inauguración oficial de la VIII Feria de Arte, el delegado de Cultura, Juan Carlos Galindo, expresó su orgulloso por la trayectoria de este evento. “Cada año nos hemos ido superando, y para el año que viene ya tenemos planteadas nuevas ofertas de talleres, y eso es sinónimo de que vamos por el buen camino”. Por su parte, la directora de la UP, Maribel Collado agradeció “a todas las personas que han colaborado para que sea posible
esta feria, tanto ciudadanos y ciudadanas sanroqueños aportando su trabajo, equipo de la Universidad Popular, medios de comunicación, Obras y Servicios, Policía, Protección Civil, etc”. Como otros años, la recaudación del stand solidario se entregará íntegramente a una ONG, en este caso la Fundación 0,7. También se ha montado un stand monográfico sobre Puente Mayorga, ya que la Universidad Popular ha comenzado este año en dicha barriada un proyecto que pretende fomentar entre sus alumnos el conocimiento de los distintos núcleos de población del municipio. 60 stands take part in the 8th Art Fair A marquee set up at El Ejido with 60 stands hosted the exhibition of products made in the 2007-2008 academic year by the students of the Universidad Popular (UP) of San Roque, while at the Juan Luis Galiardo Theatre there were performances from the stage arts workshops. During the inauguration of the official 8th Art Fair, Culture councillor Juan Carlos Galindo expressed his pride at the track record of this event. “Every year we have got better,
and for next year we have already considered offering new workshops, which means that we must be on the right track”. The chairwoman of the UP, Maribel Collado, thanked “everyone who has helped to make this fair possible: the people of San Roque who have contributed their work, the Universidad Popular team, the media, the Public Works and Services department, the police, the civil defence organisation etc”. Like in previous years, all of the funds raised on the cha-
rity stand will go to a NGO, in this case Fundación 0,7. They also set up a monographic stand on Puente Mayorga, because this year the Universidad Popular started a project in this district aiming to increasing its students’ knowledge of the various population centres of the municipality. La Cumbre de la Industria aboga por leyes menos exigentes

La Cumbre de la Industria celebrada en Punta Umbría (Huelva) el pasado 27 de mayo abogó por luchar contra la deslocalización con legislaciones menos exigentes que garanticen una competencia en igualdad de condiciones con otros países. Así lo indicaron fuentes de la Asociación de Industrias Químicas Básicas (AIQB) organizadora de este evento, al que acudieron Manuel Alarcón y Juan Pérez de Haro, miembros de la junta directiva de la Asociación de Grandes Industrias (AGI). Más de 150 personas procedentes de los principales núcleos industriales del país (Tarragona, Bahía de Algeciras y Huelva) conocieron los trabajos y conclusiones del Observatorio Industrial del Sector Químico correspondiente a 2007, que por primera vez desde su creación en 2005 se dieron a cono-
cer en Huelva. La misión de este organismo es institucionalizar de forma regular y permanente el diálogo entre las organizaciones sociales más representativas de la Industria Química española. Para Alarcón, “ha sido una cumbre muy productiva, en la que durante seis horas hemos podido realizar un balance de la situación”. Este análisis de objetivos y prioridades fue realizado por prestigiosas figuras de la Industria en España como el presidente de FEIQUE, Fernando Iturrieta; el director del Instituto de Estudios Económicos, Juan Iranzo; y el presidente de FEDIT, Emilio Pérez Picazo. En las propuestas presentadas en la cumbre estuvo muy presente el Reglamento REACH, reafirmándose que los cambios derivados de la adaptación de las compañías a esta norma son una prioridad de gestión. Para el gerente de la AGI, otro de los puntos importantes
del día fue la propuesta de aumentar la vigilancia sobre el uso y tráfico de productos fitosanitarios ilegales que no cumplen los requisitos establecidos. También destacó el análisis realizado por Juan Iranzo sobre la deslocalización de la industria a nivel mundial.

Industry Summit advocates less demanding laws The Industry Summit held in Punta Umbría (Huelva) on May 27th called for a fight against outsourcing with less demanding legislation guaranteeing competition in the same conditions as other countries. This was pointed to by sources from the AIQB (Association of Basic Chemical Industries) which organised the event attended by Manuel Alarcón and Juan Pérez de Haro, both members on the AGI (Association of Large Industries) board. Over 150 people from the main domestic industrial centres (Tarragona, the Bay of Algeciras and Huelva) got to know the work and conclusions of
the Industrial Chemical Sector Observatory for 2007, coming to Huelva for the first time since its foundation in 2005. The aim of the institution is to regularly and permanently institutionalise dialogue amongst the main representative social organisations in the Spanish Chemical Industry. For Alarcón, ‘it has been a highly productive summit where, for six hours, we have been able to come up with an evaluation of the situation’. This aims and priorities analysis was carried out by prestigious Spanish Industry figures such as the chair of FEIQUE, Fernando Iturrieta, the director of the Insti-
tute for Economic Studies, Juan Iranzo, and the chair of FEDIT, Emilio Pérez Picazo. The REACH regulations were stood out in the proposals presented at the summit, reaffirming the changes arising from companies adapting to the regulations being a management priority.For the AGI manager, another major point of the day was the proposal to increase vigilance over the use and traffic of illegal phytosanitary products which fail to comply with established requirements. He also underlined the analysis from Juan Iranzo concerning industry outsourcing on a global scale.

La Seda no descarta volver a intentar la compra de Interquisa

El presidente de La Seda, Rafael Español, afirmó en un desayuno organizado por la consultora PWC el pasado 22 de mayo que no descarta la posibilidad de volver a intentar la compra de Interquisa. En este sentido, Español explicó que la operación no llegó a buen puerto por la situación de la bolsa. Aún así, afirmó que “no sabemos si se retomará algún día, no lo descartamos, pero de momento con Cepsa somos íntimos amigos y estamos condenados a entendernos”. Cepsa, en cambio, sí que ha dado por “extinguido a todos los efectos” el acuerdo que suscribió con La Seda para vender Interquisa y entrar como accionistas de la química. La operación de compra se había valorado en 595 millones de euros. En cuanto a planes de futuro, el primer ejecutivo de La Seda explicó
que su objetivo pasa ahora por consolidar todo el crecimiento de los últimos años. Español avanzó que la química alcanzará este año una facturación de 2.200 millones de euros y un Ebitda de entre 170 y 180 millones. Preguntado por nuevas operaciones, aseguró que de momento, al menos en 2008, no hay nada sobre la mesa. Aunque el presidente de la química no prevé de forma inminente nuevas “operaciones ni ampliaciones de capital”, el presidente de la química catalana avanzó que han presentado una oferta --que compite con otras cinco-- para fabricar preformas de PET para la multinacional Coca-Cola en Rumania. Por último, Rafael Español comentó que las prioridades del grupo químico se centrarán en el proyecto de Sines (Portugal) y consolidar el entramado de 22 plantas que posee, con fábricas de PET, PTA, preformas, reciclado y biodiesel.

La Seda does not rule out trying to buy Interquisa again The chairman of La Seda, Rafael Español, stated in a breakfast organised by the PWC consultancy firm on May 22 that he does not rule out the possibility of trying to buy Interquisa again. Español said that the operation did not materialise because of the situation of the stock market. Even so, he asserted that “we don’t know whether we will resume the move one day, we are not ruling it out, but for the time being we are close friends with Cepsa and we have to understand each other”. Cepsa, on the other hand, deems the agreement reached
for the sale of Interquisa and La Seda’s admission as shareholders to be “to all intents and purposes expired”. The purchase operation had been valued at 595 million euros. As far as future plans are concerned, La Seda’s chief executive explained that his aim is now to consolidate the growth of recent years. Español stated that the chemical firm would reach a turnover of 2.2 billion euros this year and an EBITDA of between 170 and 180 million euros. Asked about new operations, he said that, for the time being, at least in
2008, there is nothing in the pipeline. Although the chairman of the Catalan chemical company does not expect new “operations or increases in capita”, he indicated that an offer, which is competing with another five, has been made for the manufacture of PET preforms for the multinational Coca-Cola in Rumania. Rafael Español said that the chemical group’s priorities will centre on the Sines project (Portugal) and the consolidation of its network of 22 plants, with PET, PTA, preform, recycling and biodiesel factories.

Acerinox invertirá 48 millones en mejorar su planta de Palmones

Acerinox anunció el pasado 27 de mayo que en este ejercicio se realizará una inversión de 250 millones de euros, un 16,2 por ciento más que en el anterior, en los diferentes proyectos que tiene en marcha en las fábricas de, Estados Unidos, Sudáfrica y Campo de Gibraltar, donde se destinarán 48 millones. Así lo anunció José María Aguirre un día antes de que el Consejo de Administración de la empresa acordara el nombramiento de Rafael Naranjo como su sucesor en la presidencia. Tras un ejercicio 2007 marcado por el desplome del precio del níquel en la segunda parte del año, que provocó una caída del 2,6% de la producción mundial, Naranjo
destacó que la situación del mercado ha mejorado, con una estabilización de los precios y de la demanda, “stocks” razonables y una cartera de pedidos “buena” en la compañía. En este sentido, aseguró que el grupo no ha notado aún el impacto de la crisis. Según precisó, en el mercado español se ha apreciado un descenso de los pedidos de acero para fregaderos y equipos de electrodomésticos como consecuencia de la situación que atraviesa la construcción, pero se compensa con otros mercados. La compañía se situó en 2007 por primera vez como primer fabricante mundial de acero inoxidable, con una participación del 8,3% en el mercado mundial, y estima que las inversiones que tiene en marcha
La tendencia será “estable” para este año El nuevo presidente de Acerinox SA, Rafael Naranjo, afirmó el pasado 27 de mayo que la tendencia del grupo a lo largo de este año es 'estable'. En la rueda de prensa ofrecida antes de la celebración de la junta general del grupo el pasado 27 de mayo, en la que se votó entre otras cosas la eliminación de blindajes estatutarios, Naranjo añadió que el beneficio neto del segundo trimestre estará bien, aunque para hablar del tercero y cuarto habrá que espe-
rar cómo evoluciona el mercado. Naranjo también dijo que espera un mantenimiento de los precios base. Cuando Acerinox publicó sus resultados del primer trimestre de 2008 se mostró optimista para el conjunto del año al comprobar una recuperación de la demanda gracias a la relativa estabilidad de los precios del níquel. En la segunda mitad del ejercicio 2007 se produjo un desplome del precio del níquel, que provocó una caída del 2,6% de la producción mundial.

Acerinox to invest 48 million in improving its Palmones plant On May 27 Acerinox announced that this financial year it will make an investment of 250 million euros, 16.2 percent more than last year, in the various projects underway at the factories in the United States, South Africa and Campo de Gibraltar, where 48 million euros will be channelled. The announcement came from José María Aguirre one day before the company’s board of directors agreed to appoint Rafael Naranjo as his successor in the chairmanship. Following the 2007 financial year, marked by the fall in the price of nickel in the second half of the year, which caused a 2.6% decrease in world production levels, Naranjo underlined that the market has improved, with a sta-
bilisation of prices and demand, reasonable stocks and a good portfolio of orders in the company. Indeed, he asserted that the group has not yet noticed the impact of the crisis. He explained that in the Spanish market there has been a noticeable decrease in orders for steel for sinks and electrical appliance units as a result of the situation that the construction industry is going through, but it is being compensated by other markets. In 2007 the company became the biggest manufacturer of
stainless steel in the world, with an 8.3% share of the world market, and it estimates that the investments that it has made will allow it to reach a steelworks output of 3.5 million tonnes by the end of this financial year, which will amount to 12.5% of worldwide production. Naranjo underlined that the distribution of Acerinox assets is “unique” in the world, with three factories in three continents, which, together with the new plant in Malaysia, “gives us security for the future”.

Petresa apuesta por un futuro sostenible

Petresa avanza en su compromiso medioambiental y apuesta por un futuro sostenible. Más del 97 por ciento del consumo global de la planta es, desde 2007, de Gas Natural cumpliéndose, de esta forma, los requerimientos marcados por el Protocolo de Kyoto. Para mostrar el proceso de producción de sus detergentes biodegradables; la calidad de sus productos, sus políticas medioambientales y sus muchos retos de presente y de futuro, la Petroquímica de Cepsa abrió recientemente sus puertas a los medios de comunicación del Campo de Gibraltar. Los asistentes al encuentro pudieron comprobar que la principal misión de la planta, situada en San Roque, es fabricar la materia prima con la que se producen los detergentes (LAB) en base a unos estrictos criterios de calidad. En este sentido, su máximo objetivo es continuar con el liderazgo mundial, tanto en producción como en tecnología y calidad, manteniendo el compromiso de servicio, el respeto
al medioambiente y el bienestar social. La planta de Petresa en San Roque produce al año en torno a 220.000 toneladas de LAB (7,5% de la producción mundial de Petresa). Esta cifra la sitúa a la cabeza de la producción de la compañía química. Con estos datos, ahora Petresa centra sus esfuerzos en la reducción de los precios y la mejora de la calidad. En este sentido, en San Roque se han ejecutado ya varios trabajos, como la creación de una nueva sala de control, la transformación de los hornos para quemar gas natural, la instalación de nuevos catalizadores más eficientes o una larga batería de proyectos en pro del ahorro energético, según explicó durante las jornadas el director de la planta, Miguel Ángel Calderón a los periodistas. The San Roque Petresa plant produces around 220,000 tonnes of LAB (7.5% of Petresa’s global production). This figure places it at the top of the chemical company’s production. With this, Petresa is now concentrating on reducing prices and improving quality. In this vein,

El ‘Tanjaoui’, ganador de la I Liga de Invierno del RCM Sotogrande La I Liga de Invierno del Real Club Marítimo de Sotogrande finalizó el 24 de mayo con la séptima y última regata. Una primera competición que ha asentado las bases para futuras ediciones y que ha demostrado que en los meses invernales se puede navegar en Sotogrande en las mejores condiciones. Con una media de unas diez embarcaciones por regata, el barco ‘Tanjaoui’ del RCM Sotogrande se proclamó justo vencedor de esta primera competición.
On May 25 Real Club Marítimo de Sotogrande’s 1st Winter League came to an end with its seventh and last regatta. This first competition has laid the foundations for future years and has demonstrated that in the winter months sailors can take to Sotogrande waters in the best of conditions. With an average of ten vessels in each regatta, the boat ‘Tanjaoui’ of RCM Sotogrande was proclaimed rightful winner of this first league.

El cuarteto de CFA, integrado por Miguel Freitas, Jorge y Esteban Iturrioz y Horacio Etcheverry, derrotó en una apasionante final a Millenium La Varzea por 7 a 6 y se adjudicó la Copa de Oro de la II edición del Open de Portugal que culminó el sábado 17 de mayo en las magníficas instalaciones de La Varzea Polo Club. El encuentro decisivo fue muy parejo, gol a gol, y con dos figuras excluyentes: Horacio Etcheverry por el lado de CFA, autor de cinco de los siete goles de su equipo; y Sebastián Merlos, el consagrado polista argentino de 9 goles de handicap y quien se encargó de mantener la ilusión de Millenium La Varzea hasta el final. A falta de poco más de un minuto para el final, y en un avance de Millenium, Jorge Iturrioz roba la bocha en campo propio y tras una larga cabalgada anota el gol del triunfo y del campeonato para CFA. La copa, muy festejada por CFA, fue entregada por el laureado entrenador de fútbol portugués, José Mourinho. El campeón se llevó además un premio de 50.000 euros, el mayor que entregó la segunda edición del Open de Portugal. Mucho público Muchísima gente se acercó a las instalaciones de La Varzea para disfrutar de una magnífica jornada de polo, amenizada por el acertado relato de Alfredo Ontiveros, y de la cual Tiago Gallego, propietario de La Varzea, sacó positivas conclusiones y aguardó un mayor crecimiento y nivel para el Open de Portugal 2009. The CFA quartet of Miguel Freitas, Jorge and Esteban Iturrioz and Horacio Etcheverry beat Millenium La Varzea by 7 to 6 in a thrilling final, winning the Gold Cup at the 2nd Portuguese Open on Saturday 17th May at the magnificent La Varzea Polo Club facilities. The decisive match was very evenly matched, goal for goal, with two standout players: Horacio Etcheverry for CFA who was behind five of the team’s seven goals and Sebastián Merlos, the established Argentinean polo player with a 9 goal handicap who kept Millenium La Varzea full-spirited until the end. At just a minute to go with a forward push by Millenium, Jorge Iturrioz stole the ball in his
own half and, after a long forward push, scored the winning goal taking the championship for CFA. The trophy, highly celebrated by CFA, was awarded by prize-winning Portuguese football coach José Mourinho. The champions also won 50,000 euros, the largest awarded by the second edition of the Portuguese Open. Crowds thronged to La Varzea facilities to enjoy a great day of polo, entertained by Alfredo Ontiveros’ spot-on commentary, with Tiago Gallego – owner of La Varzea – drawing a positive conclusion, expecting greater growth and stature for the 2009 Portuguese Open. El ganador de la vigésimo primera edición del Volvo Masters, que tendrá lugar en el Club de Golf Valderrama del 30 de octubre al 2 de noviembre, recibirá un cheque por valor de 708.000 euros y será el primer campeón en sobrepasar la barrera del millón de dólares en la historia del torneo, que este año incrementa sus premios y cuenta con un montante de 4.250.000 euros. La Reserva Golf Club y Valderrama fueron los escenarios elegidos por la Asociación de Abogados del Estado para jugar la tercera edición del Torneo Abogados del Estado. Durante los días 17 y 18 de mayo, un total de 14 jugadores llegados de diversos puntos del país disfrutaron del entorno y del buen juego que permite La Reserva. Los jugadores disputaron dos recorridos bajo la modalidad stableford. Tras las dos jornadas de competición en las que el buen ambiente fue sin duda la nota más destacada, los abogados disfrutaron de una comida en La Reserva donde se realizó la entrega de premios. Iñigo Dago Elorza, con 73 puntos, quedó en primera posición seguido, con 71 puntos, por el anfitrión, Luis Babiano Álvarez. El tercer puesto recayó en José Ignacio Monede-
ro, con 65 puntos. Aparte de los trofeos para los tres primeros de la clasificación, hubo también premios para prácticamente todos los asistentes. Dos noches en el hotel Almenara de Sotogrande, puros y paraguas completaron, de esta forma, una entrega de premios muy amena. Este torneo nació hace tres años como uno de los actos de la conmemoración de la efeméride del 125 aniversario de la creación de la Fundación de Abogados del Estado y este año se ha trasladado a Sotogrande gracias a la mediación del abogado del Estado Luis Babiano, residente de la urbanización. La asociación y el propio Luis Babiano también agradecieron la gran disposición y colaboración de la directora de golf de La Reserva, Covadonga Basagoiti, con un excelente trabajo de reservas de campo, hotel y organización interna del torneo.

Iñigo Dago, winner of the 3rd Abogados del Estado Tournament La Reserva Golf Club and Valderrama were the venues chosen by the Association of State Lawyers for the third Abogados del Estado (‘State Lawyers’) Tournament. On May 17 and 18, a group of 14 players from various parts of the country enjoyed the setting and the good play afforded by La Reserva. The players enjoyed two rounds under the Stableford scoring system. Following the two days of competition in which the good atmosphere was without doubt the predominant feature, the lawyers enjoyed a lunch at
La Reserva, which included the prize-giving ceremony. Iñigo Dago Elorza, with 73 points, finished in first place, followed by the host Luis Babiano Álvarez, with 71 points. Third place went to José Ignacio Monedero with 65 points. Apart from the trophies for the top three in the placings there were also prizes for practically every participant. Two nights at Hotel Almenara de Sotogrande, cigars and umbrellas completed the list of prizes handed out in a very enjoyable ceremony. This tournament was born
three years ago as an event organised to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the creation of the State Lawyers Foundation and this year the competition came to Sotogrande thanks to the mediation of State Lawyer Luis Babiano, a resident of the resort. Los dos jugadores acabaron con menos 11 golpes sobre el par. Jiménez señaló tras su victoria: “Estoy muy contento, ha sido una victoria magnífica. One of the best things about golf is that there are no age limits, so that those of us who are in their forties can still make a good showing. This
victory is good for everyone, just like Sergios´s (García) is, and I am really happy for him. Spanish golf is in really good shape”. Álvaro Quirós, from Cadiz, missed the cut after the second day of play at the BMW Championship. Quirós had a first round of 76, four over par, thanks to shooting a birdie on the third hole, a par four, and then five bogeys. He improved on the second day with a score of 73, but it was not good enough to make the cut, and he finished 106th with a score of 5 over par.

El guadiareño Álvaro Quirós logró el octavo puesto con menos 5 golpes, su mejor resultado en lo que va de circuito, en el Open de Irlanda disputado del 15 al 18 de mayo en Adare Manor. Richard Finch fue el ganador del torneo al saldar la última jornada con 70 golpes para terminar 10 bajo par; en segunda posición finalizó el chileno Felipe Aguilar con menos 8. Álvaro Quirós firmó 71 golpes en la jornada final para acabar luchando por el título. El guadiareño acabó en el Top 10 del torneo gracias sobre todo a la tarjeta de 68 golpes que hizo
el sábado donde firmó 6 birdies por un solo bogey. Álvaro volvió a mostrar su fama de pegador y consiguió un eagle en la primera jornada del torneo, en el hoyo 18, donde embocó en tres golpes un par cinco. Sin duda, los hoyos largos fueron su mejor opción durante todo el torneo y donde consiguió la mayoría de los birdies (72+72+68+71). A pesar del octavo puesto, Álvaro Quirós no se sentía totalmente satisfecho con el torneo: “Estoy contento porque es mi primer buen puesto de la temporada pero podría haber hecho más si el putt me hubiera ido mejor”.

Presente usted La Duquesa Golf and Country Club a un aficionado al golf. Es un campo de18 hoyos, creado por Robert Trent Jones; con un recorrido bastante distraído, con dos vueltas totalmente distintas, una primera más técnica y una segunda más ligerita. El campo se puede andar perfectamente, con calles anchas y greenes muy movidos. Apto para todo tipo de jugador, el amateur lo aprecia muchísimo porque si juega aquí bien lo hace en cualquier campo. Es un 40% de socios y un 60% de ‘pay and play’. ¿Qué objetivos se ha marcado La Duquesa? El objetivo es continuar el plan de desarrollo del campo que se está realizando en los últimos cinco años. Es un plan de reformas para mejorar la calidad; y el campo ha dado ya un giro de 180 grados, con mejoras de calles, bunkers y rough. La perspectiva de este verano es continuar la reforma de bunkers y el drenaje para el invierno. Estamos poniendo el campo en optimas condiciones, dentro un plan de inversiones de cara a los próximos tres años donde vamos a transformar también el sistema de riego y hacer un lago en el hoyo 8 para almacenamiento de agua. ¿Y en el plan deportivo? Tenemos torneos todos los fines de semana de agosto; y estamos muy ilusionados tanto con el cuadrangular de EL PERIÓDICO DE SOTOGRANDE que se va a celebrar en julio, junto con otros tres campos; como con el Pro-Am Villa de Manilva, en agosto. Económicamente, ¿cómo se presenta el verano? Yo soy bastante optimista y en La Duquesa esperamos tener un buen verano, sobre todo basado en el cliente español, por lo que estamos haciendo promoción en Madrid y otros puntos nacionales. La crisis mundial nos va a afectar bastante porque el turismo británico va a descender, al igual que el alemán.

We have tournaments every weekend of August and we are very excited about the El Periódico de Sotogrande quadrangular to be held in July on course and three others, and the Villa de Manilva Pro-Am, in August. Financially speaking, how is the summer looking? I am fairly optimistic and at La Duquesa we hope to have a good summer, mainly in terms of Spanish customers, so we are promoting in Madrid and other parts of the country. Please provide an introduction to the La Duquesa Golf and Country Club for a golf enthusiast. It’s an 18-hole course, created by Robert Trent Jones, with an enjoyable layout, involving two completely different rounds, the first of which is more technical and the second of which is easier going. The course can easily be completed on foot, with wide fairways and a challenging variety of greens. It is suitable for all kinds of players; amateurs greatly appreciate it because if they can play well here they can do so on any course.
What special offers does La Duquesa currently have? We have a summer offer of 90 euros for two green fees, with buggy and picnic. And we have special offers for local clubs without their own courses such as Santa Bárbara, Bahía, Estepona and Marbella. Cuatro alumnas del club Unión Sanroqueña de gimnasia rítmica participaron el domingo 18 de mayo en el Torneo Club Figueroa de Córdoba con unos excelentes resultados: cuatro podios, dos primeros puestos, un segundo y un tercero.
En aparato cinta, Shara Lee Garro consiguió el primer puesto en categoría junior en Córdoba; del mismo modo la sanroqueña Ana Gema Gil también obtuvo el primer puesto en aparato mazas en categoría senior. Chloe Vaughman consiguió el segundo puesto en ca-
regoría junior en aparato aro; y finalmente Nicoll Lázaro fue tercera en categoría alevín, en aparato pelota. De nuevo la delegación enviada por el club sanroqueño a un torneo autonómico ha conseguido que sus representantes se suban al podio a recoger medallas.

El III Campeonato Nacional Alevín de Fútbol 7 Copa Tercer Centenario se disputará el próximo fin de semana del 27 al 29 de juni con una participación de 16 clubes internacionales, españoles, comarcales y locales. La principal novedad en esta edición es que en cada sede habrá dos grupos de competición distintos, disputándose cuartos, semifinal y final en el Campo Municipal de Olivillos. Se ha elegido esta opción para así aglutinar el máximo número de aficionados al fútbol, así como a los familiares de los chicos. Entre los clubes que han confirmado su presencia son: Atlético de Madrid, Valencia CF, Getafe, Real Betis, Cádiz CF, Sporting de
Gijón y Sporting de Lisboa. La mayoría de las entidades repiten participación, como es el caso del Valencia, Atlético de Madrid, Cádiz CF (campeones en las dos ediciones anteriores) y el Sporting de Gijón, fiel nexo de unión de la entidad asturiana con el mítico Manolo Mesa. A estos equipos destacados se suman de nuevo otros clubes que refuerzan la naturaleza del torneo, como por ejemplo los equipos de la localidad, en los que se incluyen una nutrida Selección de Jóvenes Promesas de San Roque, así como las escuelas de Algeciras, Los Barrios, Ceuta y Tarifa. Ésta última acude al evento por primera vez para darle así mayor calado comarcal al torneo.
Everything in place for the 3rd Third Centenary Alevín Championships The 3rd National Alevín 7-a-side Football Championships, the Third Centenary Cup, will be held on the weekend of June 27 to 29, with 16 foreign, Spanish and local clubs taking part. The main innovation this year is that each venue will host two competition groups, with the quarter finals, semi finals and the final being played at the Olivillos Municipal Ground. The aim is to bring together as many football fans as possible, as well as the kids’ families. The clubs that have confirmed their presence include: Atlético de Madrid, Valencia CF, Getafe, Real Betis, Cádiz CF, Sporting de Gijón and Spor-
ting de Lisboa. The majority of the clubs are repeating their participation, as is the case of Valencia, Atlético de Madrid, Cádiz (champions of the past two competitions) and Sporting de Gijón, the club with close ties to the legendary Manolo Mesa. These outstanding teams are joined by some new clubs bolstering the tournament, such as the local teams, which include a good number of promising young San Roque stars, as well as schools in Algeciras, Los Barrios, Ceuta and Tarifa. Tarifa enters the event for the first time to provide a greater presence of local sides in the tournament.

La competición se desarrolló perfectamente durante las dos primeras jornadas, mientras que en la del domingo la lluvia que cayó a primera hora de la mañana obligó a retrasar el inicio del juego a las 13.00 horas, donde ya el resto de parejas que quedaban en juego comenzaron a disputar las dos últimas rondas de donde salieron los cuatro equipos masculinos y femeninos que jugarán la final andaluza en Sevilla. Los cuatro equipos femeninos clasificados para la gran final de Sevilla del 20 al 22 de junio son:

Four teams from Campo de Gibraltar in the Andalusian final From May 23 to 25 Sotogrande Racquet hosted the Qualifying Stage for Group Three of the Andalusian Championships, with four teams from Campo de Gibraltar going through to the grand final. The competition unfolded without incident on the first two days, while on the Sunday the rain fell first thing in the morning, and the start of play had to be postponed until 1 pm. The remaining pairs then played the last two rounds, from which the
four men’s and women’s teams that will play in the Andalusian final in Seville emerged. The four women’s teams that qualified for the grand final in Seville from June 20 to 22 are: Octógono A (Sotogrande), Las Marías A (Puerto), Padel Land (Puerto) and Las Marías (Puerto); and the four men’s team that have qualified are: Santa Bárbara A (La Línea), Villa de Los Barrios, C-C Inmobiliaria (Cádiz) and Linense Tenis Club (La Línea).
In total there were 43 teams: 21 men and 20 women who did battle on the courts of Sotogrande Racquet to secure their place in the final.
Charity tournament On June 12, 13 and 14 Sotogrande Racquet will host the 3rd Montenegral Association Charity Tournament, with an entry fee of 20 euros for the Men’s A, B and C, Women’s A and B, Mixed and Adult-Under 12s categories.

El fin de semana del 17 y 18 de mayo se celebró el segundo Concurso Nacional de Saltos 1* del Trofeo Cuatro Estaciones Sotogrande Hípica, en esta ocasión el tiempo acompañó en las dos jornadas por lo que se produjo un considerable aumento de participantes contando con 170 salidas a pista, 29 de las cuales fueron en el Gran Premio de 1.35. Este Gran Premio fue finalmente para el jinete sevillano Marcelo del Pozo con Loira Jupiter. Cabe destacar que al desempate solo pudieron pasar seis binomios, ya que la prueba contaba con un recorrido muy técnico diseñado por José Rodríguez, que pasó factura al resto de participantes. El desempate fue emocionante hasta
el último caballo. El segundo clasificado fue Carlos Bosch con Chicago Blues, a tan solo 23 centésimas del primero y el tercero quedó para el ganador del primer Gran Premio Miguel Torres con Quetoutte Van de Brem a 1 segundo 93 centésimos del primero. En total este concurso ha contado con ocho prueblas, desde los palos para los niños hasta la comentada prueba de 1.35. La prueba de 1.20 del domingo la lideró Carlos Bosch con Chiara Van Colen y la de 1.10 la amazona de Sotogrande Hípica Marina Piña con Korine. En las pruebas complementarias del domingo se alzaron con los primeros puestos, en 1.00 metro Sifia Malá con Happy Talk, en 0.80 metro Marcos de la Campa con Rocky en 0.60 Álvaro Peralta
con Bianco que también ganó el sabado. Precisamente en este día los triunfadores fueron Salvador Astolfi con Loutiano en la prueba de 1.30, José García Diana con Equiastigui Sabine en la de 1.20 y en 1.10 Franco Quarta con Lazio. Además de las competiciones, Sotogrande Hípica registró una buena asistencia de público y el aliciente ofrecido por el Restaurante El Estribo que en doble jornada ofreció un asado argentino gratuito para todos los asistentes y una fiesta en sábado por la noche con degustación de cordero. La tercera prueba de este Trofeo Cuatro Estaciones tendrá lugar en el mes de septiembre esperando que ocurra como en éste, que siga aumentando el número de participantes.

On the weekend of May 17 and 18 the second 1* National Showjumping Contest of the Sotogrande Hípica Cuatro Estaciones Trophy was held, and this time the weather was favourable on both days, leading to a considerable increase in participants, with 170 starts in the arena, 29 of which were in the 1.35-metre Gran Premio. It was won in the end by Seville rider Marcelo del Pozo, on Loira Jupiter. Only six horse-rider combinations were able to reach the tiebreaker, as the trials had a very technical course designed by José Rodríguez, which was too much for the rest of the participants. The tiebreaker was exciting through to the last horse: Carlos Bosch riding Chicago Blues was
second, just 0.023 seconds behind the winner, and third place went to the winner of the first Gran Premio, Miguel Torres, who was riding Quetoutte Van de Brem and finished 1.93 seconds behind the winner. This competition involved a total of eight trials, from children’s bars to the aforementioned 1.35metre trial. The 1.20-metre trial on the Sunday was won by Carlos Bosch with Chiara Van Colen and the 1.10-metre was taken by Sotogrande Hípica rider Marina Piña riding Korine. In the additional trials on the Sunday first places went to Sifia Malá on Happy Talk in the 1-metre and Marcos de la Campa riding Rocky in the 0.80-metre, and Ál-

El barco ‘Tanjaoui’ se proclamó vencedor de la I Liga de Invierno del Real Club Marítimo de Sotogrande tras la celebración de la séptima y última prueba del calendario el sábado 24 de mayo. La séptima regata se celebró en aguas de Sotogrande en un recorrido de sotavento-barlovento de unas ocho millas con un viento de Poniente que llegó a alcanzar hasta los 18 nudos y con un mar con poco oleaje. La victoria correspondió a la embarcación algecireña ‘Holding Inmobiliario’, seguida en la clasificación por ‘Tanjaoui’ y ‘Titicaca’. Tras las siete jornadas disputadas, aunque dos de ellas, la cuarta y la quinta fueron suspendidas por el mal tiempo meteorológico, la clasificación general quedó comandada por el barco ‘Tanjaoui’, que ha sido el gran dominador de la competición y ha vencido en cuatro de las cinco regatas. ‘Tanjaoui’, the big winner at the 1st Sotogrande Winter League The ‘Tanjaoui’ claimed victory in the 1st Winter League at the Real Club Marítimo Sotogrande after the seventh and last trial on the calendar on Saturday 24th May. Alejandro Casuso, octavo en el Circuito de Montmeló

El joven piloto de El Secadero (Casares), Alejandro Casuso, consiguió el octavo puesto en la 2ª Prueba del Campeonato de España de Velocidad Buckler de 125cc que se disputó el 25 de mayo en Montmeló (Barcelona). Casuso, del equipo Tey Racing, partió en el puesto 31º de la parrilla de salida y en una carrera marcada por la intensa lluvia logró con su Aprilia una gran remontada para terminar octavo. El ganador de la prueba, a 15 vueltas, fue el holandés Joey Litjens (Seel 125). Casuso terminó a 34 segundos del ganador e hizo su vuelta rápida en un tiempo de 2.16 minutos. El joven piloto malagueño se adaptó perfectamente a las extremas condiciones de la pista, totalmente llena de agua, y completó su mejor carrera desde que está en el
circuito. “Tuve una buena salida y comencé pronto a realizar una buena remontada; estoy bastante satisfecho del fin de semana”, señala Casuso sobre la carrera. El piloto protagonizó unos excelentes entrenamientos el sábado por la mañana, también con una intensa lluvia, donde estuvo luchando por la pole y firmó una segunda posición; luego en los entrenamientos de la tarde, ya en seco, sólo pudo hacer el puesto 31º. En la 1ª prueba del Campeonato, disputada en Valencia el 20 de abril, Casuso acabó el 18º después de salir de parrilla el 26º; así que tras dos pruebas disputadas el malagueño se encuentra en la clasificación general en el puesto 15º con 8 puntos, los conseguidos en Montmeló. La próxima prueba es en Jerez el 15 de junio.

Alejandro Casuso, eighth on the Montmeló Circuit Campo de Gibraltar rider Alejandro Casuso achieved eighth place in the second race in the Spanish Championships in the Buckler 125cc category, held on May 25 at Montmeló (Barcelona). Casuso, of the Tey Racing team, started in 31st place on the grid and in a race marked by intense rain he made a big comeback on his Aprilia to finish eighth. The winner of the 15-lap race was Dutchman Joey Litjens (Seel 125). Casuso finished 34 seconds
behind the winner and completed his fastest lap in a time of 2 minutes and 16 seconds. The young rider from El Secadero adapted perfectly to the extreme conditions on the track, which was completely covered in water, and completed his best race since he has been competing on the circuit. “I made a good start and quickly began to gain ground; I am pretty satisfied with the weekend”, said Casuso on the race. Casuso trained superbly on the Saturday morning, also with inten-
se rain, in his fight for pole position, and he secured a second place; later, in the afternoon training sessions with dry weather, he was only able to take 31st. In the first race in the championships, held in Valencia on April 20, Casuso finished 18th after starting at 26th on the grid, so after two races the Campo de Gibraltar rider is 15th in the overall placings with the eight points he obtained in Montmeló. The next race is in Jerez on June 15.
